Cancer sufferer feels let down By ZOE GARDEN

s Aucklanders celebrated New Year’s Eve with fireworks and gatherings, Gemma Malins was on a hospital bed. The 28-year-old from Beachlands had a job with the local after school care, studied early childhood education and worked in two daycare centres. Then, in mid-2018, she noticed the lump under the skin on her thigh. The doctor told her it was “fat”. As the months passed she noticed the lump grew larger and she had a new one on her breast. On her second visit to the doctor, they told her it was likely Lipoma (fatty lump) and that she “could pretty much rule out cancer”. Upon moving to Beachlands in 2019, she met her GP who sent her to a specialist. “Because I didn’t have health insurance, it was a three month wait,” Malins says. She says her GP “understood me right from the start” and is “so kind and caring” and has been incredibly supportive throughout Malins’ journey. She visited the specialist and

received her biopsy results. On October 2019 she was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. “It was quite a shock,” Malins says. “Not one doctor had sent me for further testing of these lumps.” Malins says she feels let down by the health system as, for more than a year, doctors dismissed her worries. Malins and her partner Brandon stopped working. Keeping up with her studies was impossible. One positive to the difficult situation was Malins and Brandon’s impromptu wedding and honeymoon to Paihia. “My husband never leaves my side,” she says. “He’s wonderful.” Her first treatment was an intravenous immunotherapy called Keytruda. It seemed to be working until Malins received word that the tumours were growing. In February she needed 4.5 litres of fluid drained from her abdomen. She also had radiation on three melanomas. “It was horrible,” she says. “I had to wear a mask over my face as I was bolted down to the table to treat the one

in my brain. It was very claustrophobic.” She enjoys going out for walks, going to the beach, eating out, travelling, gardening and spending time with family and friends. Malins told the Times that she feels people treat her differently because of her diagnosis. “I’m not able to do things I used too,” she says. “I feel left out. I feel like my illness defines me.” Her new treatment, ipilimumab, is her last option. It costs her $12,000 every three weeks at a private clinic. Malin’s Nana kindly paid for the first one. Now she is fundraising for the rest. Celine Moshiem, Malins’ sister, set up a Givealittle page to help raise funds. So far she has reached $52,000 out of her goal of $48,000. “All I can do now is take one day at a time,” Malins says, “and make the most of every moment.” ➤ https://givealittle. co.nz/cause/can-youhelp-gemma-fight-forlife?fbclid=IwAR1SwOpBGtDg7krcKPzCOZJJ3JxwARu aopRvhtGmASrQOKxlsIglG jLZl0

amlyn Boddington desperately signalled for help for more than 10 minutes as an injured elderly man lay in the rain. At 9:10am on Tuesday April 20, Tamlyn was driving along Botany Road by Xtreme Bowling when she spotted an elderly gentleman on the ground, flailing his arms. There were cars in front of her. “I thought someone would stop,” Tamlyn says. “They didn’t.” Acting quickly, she turned into the parking area, jumped out and ran over to the man. He shook his head and turned to face the wall. She waved at passing cars urgently as she called an ambulance. No cars stopped. This went on for 10 minutes. Tamlyn spotted a big Harvey Norman truck coming up from the lane behind Xtreme. She signalled to him. Immediately the driver,

Sometimes it is “easier to turn a blind eye” or tell yourself that “someone else will help,” says Tamlyn. She is grateful Jono stopped to help. “I hope this encourages people to truly see others around them and not to be afraid to help,” she says. “This man was cold and alone and so many people passed by.” John has recently had brain surgery, been discharged and lives off Millhouse Drive. “If anyone knows of this lovely man, I have so many offers of help for him,” she says. “I would love to check up on him and show him he isn’t alone.”

Donated bikes awarded to Riverina School By ZOE GARDEN Auckland Transport (AT) donated 15 bikes and helmets to a local school as part of its ‘Keep it 30k’ campaign. AMETI – Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative – was launched two years ago to “give residents of South Eastern suburbs improved transport choices and better connect them to the rest of Auckland”. In early 2020, Fulton Hogan – contractors in charge of the AMETI construction – and AT teamed up to create a way to decrease traffic speed and improve community and worker safety. “The ‘Keep it 30k’ campaign was launched in June 2020. Later he helped Tamlyn slowly walk him over to Xtreme where he could sit on a chair and then waited with them. “The man said his name was John,” Tamlyn says. “He couldn’t remember his last name or address.” As the shock wore off, John managed to get across he has cancer, had brain surgery and was discharged a few days ago. He travelled to Harvey Norman in an attempt to buy a cell phone. Unfortunately he’d landed on the ground and was unable to get up. The staff at Xtreme organised food and water for John. The ambulance took 40 minutes to get there. Jono and Tamlyn left once he was settled in with the paramedics. Tamlyn says she is appalled by the lack of help from passing cars. “There was no way he wasn’t

POLICE

Driver charged over schoolgirl’s car park death By CHRIS HARROWELL

P

olice have charged the driver of a vehicle that fatally struck a girl in an east Auckland school car park. The girl, five-year-old Joanna Kong, later died from her injuries in hospital. She was struck by a vehicle at Pigeon Mountain Primary School in Bucklands Beach on March 23. Counties Manukau Police say a 77-year-old man is scheduled to appear in the Manukau District Court on May 6 charged with careless driving causing death over the incident. Emergency services were called to the school at about 8.40am on March 23 after being notified of a serious crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian. The injured girl, whose family lives in Bucklands Beach, was taken to Starship Hospital in a critical condition. She died in hospital with her family by her side on March 28.

“Police extend our condolences to her family at this incredibly difficult time,” Counties Manukau East Police senior sergeant Anson Lin said at the time. “We have been providing the support we can to the family as well as the wider school community, who have been greatly impacted by this incident.” Counties Manukau Police’s serious crash investigation unit was notified of the incident and examined the scene shortly after it happened. Police officers were at the school in Wells Road when the Times visited the scene. Yellow cordon tape had been placed around a car park at the front of the school and access to the entrance blocked off. Investigators were examining a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan parked on the grass adjacent to the car park. Police revealed on March 24 that a 77-year-old man had been forbidden to drive following the

incident. “Any further decisions around his eligibility for driving will be for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to make,” police said. Pigeon Mountain Primary School principal Ian Dickinson and board of trustees presiding member Mark Eades posted a public message on the school’s website on March 28. “We are supporting and helping the [girl’s] family where possible,” they said. “Our sympathies and love go out to her family and we will be striving to provide them with any support they need. “During this difficult time, we are all going to express a range of emotions. “We therefore should expect, try to understand, and support a variety of emotions and behaviours. “We should support discussion about the event, the feelings it gives rise to, and ways of responding.”

OPINION

Howick Police Station integral to our community safety MP for Pakuranga

M

any of you will now be aware of the proposed closure of the Howick Police Station following Auckland Council’s decision to sell the land the station is located upon. This is disappointing news for our community. Community policing is often an undervalued part of the way our police interact with us and keep us safe and, if this station closure makes it harder for them to do their job, we will suffer for it.

We are fortunate to have had a fantastic team of community constables taking care of our area, who regularly go out of their way to support victims of crime, engage with residents and businesses on law-and-order issues and provide a friendly police presence in our area. Without Howick Police Station, the distance between Police HQ in Ormiston and its farthest suburbs, such as Bucklands Beach and

Pakuranga Heights, becomes a lot larger and the community will be right to wonder what impact this will have on their safety. I recently met with the Counties Manukau District Commander Jill Rogers to discuss and express my concerns with the closure of this station. I was pleased to hear that police are actively considering options to retain a community presence elsewhere in our Howick community, and I will be pushing

for this to happen. I strongly believe in the work our community constables do and it is vital they continue to have a local base to operate out of. I look forward to working with police over the coming months to ensure this can be the case going forward. (Botany MP) Christopher Luxon and I will also be holding a public meeting to discuss this proposed closure and invite you to attend to hear directly from Acting Counties

Simeon Brown

Manukau East Area Commander Colin Higson about the future of our Howick Station and to have your voice heard on this incredibly important matter. The meeting will be held on May 25 at 7pm at the Howick Bowling Club, 33 Selwyn Road, Howick. We look forward to seeing you there. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga

Pakuranga Heights School marks Anzac Day By ZOE GARDEN Pakuranga Heights School and Davis Funerals have marked Anzac Day with a creative initiative. Middle and senior school students learned about the significance of Anzac Day and why New Zealand commemorates this on April 25. Senior students then embarked on their own research to find out about someone they felt was a New Zealand war hero. Students used their research to write a biography on the chosen war hero and included their

names and ranks on wooden poppies they painted which were supplied by Davis Funeral’s Pakuranga branch manager SweeHam Lim. “The poppies were a great support to us to include an action for our learning,” Antonia Burton, Team Leader at Pakuranga Heights, says. “The students enjoyed it.” It also helped to create a memorial spot where they could hold a small remembrance service on the last day of term so “all students could experience this,” Burton says.

IN AND AROUND

HOWICK

VILLAGE

She’s our travel angel I

would like to say a huge thank you to Natasha Warfield of Travel Associates in Moore Street, Howick. From mid-January I have been trying to get my son home from Glasgow, Scotland. This has been extremely hard, very stressful and, without Natasha’s help, I would have said impossible. Once my son got his MIQ (Managed Isolation Quarantine) voucher, he had 48 hours to find flights that fitted in with his allocated date. Not all countries allow people from the UK to transit through their airports. We wouldn’t have known without Natasha. The first choice of flights, which fitted in with his MIQ date and transit, was cancelled, so back to square one for us and Natasha. Luckily our second choice worked, transiting through Doha. As there was an 18 hour stop-over in Doha, Natasha booked a hotel room. Just as well as it was booked as the hotel ended up being full. The paperwork alone was mind boggling. If you are not good with online forms, it can

2021 BIENNIAL EXHIBITION

With travel the way it is right now, I think travel agents work for very little pay, so we are really lucky to have a team of experts such as Travel Associates in Howick, especially Natasha. If anyone reading this letter needs a first class travel agent, I can whole-heartedly recommend Natasha Warfield who I would call our travel angel. Sue Bentley, Pakuranga

Coastal Cat Rescue wants volunteers By ZOE GARDEN

A

vehicle testing inspector working in east Auckland was suspended after being the subject of a complaint. The male staff member worked at the Vehicle Testing NZ branch at The Hub in Botany. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency senior manager for safer vehicles Nicole Botherway says the inspector was suspended following an investigation. The agency undertakes regular reviews to ensure vehicle inspectors are conducting inspections in compliance with the relevant manual, she says. “If we believe there may be a significant safety risk to the public because of a vehicle inspector failing to meet the standards needed to carry out their delegated authorities, our regulatory powers allow us to suspend an inspector or inspecting organisation. “Further actions as a result of this suspension can range from a warning, a suspension with conditions to allow the inspector or inspecting organisation to work their way back to compliance, or a proposal to revoke their authority to conduct these inspections.” Botherway says the

agency will only refer an inspector or inspecting organisation to police if evidence of criminal activity is found. She says the agency’s Safer Vehicles programme is working through the next steps for the suspended inspector and the case has not been referred to police. A copy of a letter sent by the NZ Transport Agency to an affected vehicle owner and seen by the Times says the agency has “safety concerns about the warrant of fitness” (WoF) obtained for the vehicle. The letter states the vehicle in question received its WoF from the VTNZ at The Hub. “Their vehicle inspector was immediately suspended from carrying out WoF inspections on 04/02/20201 due to safety concerns in their work. While your current WoF is still valid and no specific concerns about your vehicles have currently been identified, we strongly recommend you get your vehicles reinspected rather than waiting until its expiry date.” The letter says the recipient can pay to have their vehicle re-inspected or talk to VTNZ at The Hub about the branch meeting the cost of the inspection. “You will also need to pay

for the cost of any works required on your vehicle to get it up to WoF standard. “We remind you it is every vehicle owner’s responsibility to ensure that vehicles are up to WoF standard.” Botherway says letters were sent to the owners of about 1720 vehicles with current WoFs issued by the suspended inspector. “In instances where an inspector has been suspended and letters are issued to owners, the warrant of fitness is still valid. “We may not have specific concerns about the safety of every vehicle inspected by an inspector who is subsequently suspended, but we strongly recommend owners get their vehicles re-inspected rather than waiting until its expiry date. “This is for their safety and the safety of all other road users.” VTNZ national technical manager Craig Basher says the organisation has found no safety concerns with any of the vehicles presented for re-inspection since the letters were sent out. Basher says several VTNZ branches, including at The Hub in Botany, are currently closed as a measure to recover costs lost from last year’s level 3 and 4 Covid-19 lockdowns.

Two years ago, Gill’s cat passed away. She proceeded to donate his cage to the Coastal Cat Rescue which uses these items to provide for stray and abandoned cats and kittens. “The owner and I started speaking,” Gill says, “and the rest is history.” Gill has been volunteering ever since. Coastal Cat Rescues operates on the Pohutukawa Coast – Beachlands, Maraetai and surrounding areas. It is a non-profit organisation that takes dumped, unwanted and stray cats and kittens from the street and places them in foster or loving homes when they can. Lyn Gribble, the founder and owner, says that abandoned cats are a troubling issue within New Zealand. “One of the issues is that people give away free undesexed kittens,” Lyn says. “Then often, when the owners find out the costs to desex, they allow them to reproduce or abandon them to become strays, and the cycle continues.” It is the aim of with all rescues to stop out-of-control breeding because many

of the kittens become sick and die from living on the streets, says Lyn. Kitten season usually runs from spring with the peak in summer and lasts into June. Gill, volunteer, with Popcorn, a rescued Photo Zoe Garden “There are a kitten. lot of sick and suffering kittens,” Lyn says. “We are a bit over“Right now, two of the whelmed during kitten searooms in my house have son,” Lyn says. “Our funding transformed into quaran- has been significantly cut.” tine zones so that I can sepaCoastal Cat Rescue is a rate them.” member of the Community So far, this season, Coastal Cat Coalition which gets Cat Rescue has homed a grant from the SPCA for around 50 kittens. o you want to celebrate Mother’s Day with a sentimental card expressing your unconditional love? Here are some ideas to help inspire your inner poet. There are a million ways to tell your darling mother just how much you love her. For example, you could let her know that you’re proud to call her your mum; that you look up to her in every way; that you’re honoured to have inherited her amazing qualities, etc. You could also thank her for always being there when you need her most or for being a part of your most cherished childhood memories. If you’re not the sentimental type – and that’s just fine – opt for some comic relief! Remind your mom of your most petty arguments and underline your gratitude for her unwavering patience. Remember, Mother’s Day is a celebration of all mothers. Give a thoughtful card

undreds attended the Beachlands Anzac Service and Civic Parade on April 25 to pay respects to the fallen soldiers of decades past. The Dawn Service started at 6am on Sunday at the bottom end of Wakelin Road. More than 300 people were present. At 8.30am the Civic Parade mustered at the Beachlands Club then marched to Beachlands Primary School. At 9am the flag bearers and parade of people were led into Beachlands School Hall for the Civic Service. The guest of honour was 101-year-old Esme Peters.

such as winches, generators, pumps, steering, etc, everything that goes with boating. “We’re finding a lot of new customers have come through word of mouth. They tell us a mate of theirs bought their boat here and we were highly recommended.” Phil says the business can handle jobs of any size. The background and experience of the people who make up the team at Ovlov Marine Pine Harbour means the services on offer can be provided with confidence. The Ovlov Marine team is fully mobile and can carry out servicing or repairs at their very well-equipped workshop, or travel to work on boats at other marinas or boat slips. At the heart of the busi-

ness’s success is its focus on customer service and going the extra mile to meet and exceed their customers’ expectations. “We always try to look after our customers as best we can,” Phil says. Ovlov Marine Pine Harbour are enjoying the constant growth of the business and they are now on the lookout for another skilled technician to join their team.

Manager Phil Jarvis says the Beachlands-based business urges boaties to have the work done now so they’re ready to get back out on the water later this year. “People sometimes lay up their vessel for a couple of months,” he says. “If there’s old oil in the sump and it’s done a fair few hours, there will be contaminants suspended in that oil and around the internal components of the engine. It’s advised to get the oil and filters changed before laying up the boat, giving it the best protection possible.” Phil says Ovlov Marine carries out a wide range of servicing to marine engines of all sizes, from small 2hp units to much larger 1000hp diesel ones. “We sell and install new engines, including Yamaha outboards and Volvo Penta engines. We carry out maintenance and servicing and repairs for them as well as sales and installation of other equipment on boats

Pretty sure they could make a month’s revenue at that intersection alone. So would I like to see something done? Yes. Sooner or later someone, probably a child, will cop it. Maybe a roundabout is not the answer, perhaps humps, islands and crossing zones would be better, but something.

‘THIS INTERSECTION IS DANGEROUS’ The Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association are incorrect (Group opposes $300k intersection changes, Times, April 27) if they state that there have been no accidents at the intersection of Avoca and Advene roads and Alexander Street. I live very close to the intersection and there have been quite a few – fortunately none really serious. I’ve only seen an ambulance once but the remnants of vehicle bits in the road every now and then indicate that there have been a few minor dings. I am guessing that because, luckily, they have been minor, none get reported. However, more luck than judgment. I have been nearly hit five times travelling in my car along Alexander and always by vehi-

cles driving at speed through from Advene or Avoca without stopping at the stop sign or even to look. Just a few days ago a cyclist rode down Avoca, must have been doing at least 50, perhaps more, flew through, no helmet, managed to look one way as he got to the midpoint. If any cars had been coming, he would have been wiped out. Only about 30 per cent to 40 per cent of cars actually stop at the stop signs and a similar percentage slow and treat it as a give way. The rest don’t seem to give a toss and just barrel through. On one occasion I was halfway across Avoca with my dog when a vehicle came up Advene, didn’t stop, flew through the intersection and caught me with its side mirror. The driver got out and berated me for “being in the way”. Had he stopped, I would have been well across. I have complained to the police

HIGHLAND PARK DESERT Ross Nielsen’s letter of April 20 “Highland Park Desolation” shone on a light on a situation that has perplexed many who live in the vicinity of the village. I have been a resident of Highland Park since 1976 and have enjoyed the sense of community the shops engendered. Its cheerful collection of eateries, retail shops and services catered for all our needs and the unique town clock was a welcome sight when lit up at night. The village provided an important focus for locals who would meet regularly for coffee or a meal in pleasant surroundings. However, for the last two years on visiting the village you are confronted by barriers, closed shops and an atmosphere of abandonment and decay. Rubbish is being dumped in the area and its air of neglect has attracted vermin, vagrants and vandals.

This situation has developed as everyone knows because of a battle between the supermarket giants Woolworths (Countdown) and Foodstuffs (Pak’nSave). Countdown has been operating two supermarkets side by side shutting out any competition. Although Pak’nSave have bought the village, Countdown maintain their operation there by retaining the lease which has a covenant preventing the establishment of any rival supermarket. Pak’nSave have gone to the High Court but have been instructed that a resolution must be sought through arbitration. This dispute is covered in the article with the link https:// www.fcmcbusiness.c o.nz/ battle-at-highland-park/. Enquiries with the Howick Local Board reveal that as far as the Auckland Council is concerned, this is a private matter because of the covenant. No building consent application has been lodged and therefore a compliance monitoring officer has not been assigned. Unless Pak’nSave have made further progress through arbitration, the answer may lie with the Commerce Commission who in November 2020 undertook a “Market study into the Grocery sector” at the request of the Government. This will investigate “Anti competitive behaviour” involving grocery retailers which can attract heavy penalties under the Commerce Act. The final report of this study is

due on November 23 which will hopefully conclude that behaviour like Countdown’s is anti-competitive and is operating in a manner that is detrimental to the local community. For an Australian Company like Woolworths to treat a community with such blatant disregard is a disgrace and just another dismissive gesture we have come to expect from our ‘friends’ across the ditch.

Colin Graham, Highland Park

➤ Editor’s Note: A Countdown spokesperson replies: ➤ We have been proud to be part of the Highland Park community since the 1970s, and like your reader, we’d love to see this return to being a vibrant little shopping centre. It’s disappointing to see the specialty tenants and other shops close. When Foodstuffs (which has brands including Pak’nSave, New World) bought the shopping centre and became our landlord, they would have been aware of our lease agreement and the need to ensure that the supermarket is part of an integrated and functioning shopping centre, as well as other requirements around maintaining pedestrian and vehicle access for our supermarket. We’re proud to employ more than 20,000 Kiwis right across the country in our supermarkets, distribution centres and support offices. We always want to serve and positively contribute to the communities we live and work in, and Highland Park is no exception.

Murderous motive behind stage thriller By CHRIS HARROWELL

P

eople with a thirst for psychological thrillers involving malice, misery, and murder should be captivated by Howick Little Theatre’s stage production of The Girl on the Train. The high-profile play features a cast of seven actors and is directed by Matthew van den Berg. It’s based on the novel of the same name by author Paula Hawkins and adapted for the stage by Rachael Wagstaff and Duncan Abel. The story is set in the United Kingdom and centres on the character Rachel Watson, who van den Berg describes as “unemployed, divorced and a depressed alcoholic”. Watson rides the train daily and becomes obsessed with a group of people she sees in the outside world from her seat. They include her ex-partner Tom Watson, his new wife Anna, their baby Evie and a couple named Scott and Megan. She invents a fantasy about their lives and when one of

them goes missing, Watson inserts herself into the resulting police investigation in ways she couldn’t foresee. “Everybody becomes a suspect,” van den Berg says. “In her drive to maintain sobriety, Rachel recovers and realises what was actually going on and she tries to clear her name. This is a psychological thriller. It has a lot of themes, such as birth, death and the desire to have a baby.” Van den Berg says the cast is comprised of Kiwi talent

It’s …er… really rocket science Former Macleans College student Joel Lawson has recently completed his PhD thesis from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and will be working in aeronautics. Since leaving Macleans, Lawson (Upham House 20052009) has been studying aeronautics at Caltech. He gained his MSc from Caltech in 2016 and will have a PhD in aeronautics conferred in June following his successful thesis defence in early April. Lawson is a member of the Caltech Hypersonics Group which researches flight at very high speeds, such as during re-entry into the atmosphere from space. Prior to his postgraduate studies at Caltech, he obtained a BSc in chemistry and a BE in mechanical engineering from the University of Auckland in 2014. He remains at Caltech as a postdoctoral researcher while he awaits the processing of his US permanent residency which is a prerequisite for most employment in the non-academic aerospace industry. He will remain in the Los Angeles area as possible employment opportunities there include SpaceX, NASA JPL, Blue Origin and Virgin Orbit. When he was at Macleans

THEATRE

HCYT has something for everyone The Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre (HCYT) has three shows coming up – and they’re excited after prolonged lockdowns shelved shows last year. “After Covid prevented us from performing in 2020, we are delighted to be able to tread the boards again,” says HCYT principal Fiona Bailey. Youth Theatre students are performing Blue Stockings which is a funny, but hard-hitting drama set in 1896, in Cambridge, England. It delves into women’s educational rights and their right to obtain degrees. It is suitable for children 12 years and older – right the way up to grandparents. This is an emotional and passionate show. It performs on Thursday May 6 and Friday May 7 at 7.30pm and on Sunday 9th May at 4.30pm. Tickets are $10 per head. For families we have Rumpelstiltskin. This is a full-length play based full-length play based on the traditional story known to all. This is a fun show suitable for children 5 years and older. It performs on Thursday May 6 & Friday May 7 at 5pm, on Saturday May 8 at 1.30pm and 4pm and on Sunday May 9 at 1.30pm. Tickets are $8 per head. For younger viewers there is Gingerbread House in the Forest. This is approximately an hour long and is suitable for children 3-4 years and older. It performs on Saturday May 8 and Sunday May 9 at 10am and 11.30am. Tickets are $6 per head. “All shows have been rehearsing since February and the casts is ready to bring their performances to life for the local community,” says Bailey. “Please come along and support these hardworking students. There is something here for everyone.” ➤ Performances at The Harlequin Theatre at 563 Pakuranga Road, Howick. For bookings email hcyt@xtra.co.nz or call 537 4943.

ANZAC DAY

More relevant than ever before: RSA In the wake of Howick’s annual Anzac Day commemorations, two naval veterans think it is only growing in importance. NATHAN LIMM explains.

T

wo of Howick’s senior naval veterans say Anzac Day commemorations are more relevant now than ever before. Locals gathered on Stockade Hill on Anzac Day for annual services remembering all New Zealanders who participated in action overseas. John Titmus, vice-president of the Howick RSA, served in the Royal New Zealand Navy for more than 20 years. He says the world is more conflict-conscious than ever. “You can go home and get instant news all the time about conflicts all around the world which otherwise you wouldn’t know about.” New Zealand troops are currently deployed in the likes of Syria, Iraq and South Sudan. Titmus says Anzac Day commemorations are a big boost to Kiwis serving overseas. “I actually think it’s miles more important today than it was yesterday. It almost stops the nation. It usually cuts across political boundaries.”

Mike Cole, a fellow naval veteran who served for 23 years, participated in conflicts in Malaya and Borneo. He was aboard the HMNZS Otago in 1973 when they witnessed the Mururoa Atoll nuclear test in Tahiti by the French. Cole says without the Anzacs, New Zealand could be a very different country. “You wouldn’t have the freedoms you enjoy today; the freedom of speech and association. “The entire history of the world could’ve gone another way.” Titmus says there are few Kiwi families unaffected by the World Wars. “My dad fought and was wounded in Italy. He was pretty battered and bruised psychologically in 1945. My Grandfather was in Passchendaele and on the Somme.” Both veterans agree New Zealand derives its sense of national identity from wartime. Cole says the infamous Gallipoli campaign was the first time New Zealand was recognised as a country. “They went away as

Cantabrians or Aucklanders and they realised in the trenches we were all one. They got a sense of identity of being New Zealanders.” The day also reinforces the partnership Aotearoa has with Australia. Cole says New Zealanders have fought alongside our trans-Tasman neighbours throughout history. “Basically they’re our brothers; they’re just over the ditch there. We become a stronger and better force.” Titmus says turnouts for Anzac Day commemorations seem to be on the rise. “What’s staggering these days is the amount of kids that show up for dawn service. It didn’t used to happen but now it’s almost a family thing.” The day marks 106 years since the Gallipoli campaign began. ➤ Nathan Limm is a 20-year-old student in the third year of his journalism degree. He has grown up and done all his schooling in Howick, most recently attending Howick College. He is currently working as a sports journalist with Newstalk ZB.

Beauden opens fullback door for bro Jordie

with Ivan Agnew

Jordie Barrett is a strong contender for the full-back berth. Photo YouTube

Crusader Mitch Hunt who, behind a tigherish forward pack, played a key role in the Highlanders’ upset defeat of the Crusaders earlier in the season. Versatile Chiefs matchwinner Damian McKenzie is also an outstanding first-five and fullback who excites fans and terrorises opponents with his daring deeds. While the silky running Jordan is another exceptional No 15, Jordie Barrett’s bruising defence and greater involvement on attack

could give him the edge over two other outstanding candidates. With Aaron Smith a certainty to start at halfback barring injury, the midfield combination will have the selectors scratching their heads and risking splinters. Ngani Laumape remains the most powerful runner, Rieko Ioane the fastest and Anton LienertBrown and David Havili the most skilful. It’s an indictment on the Blues that Ioane and explosive left-

wing Caleb Clarke are not getting enough ball to utilise their tryscoring talents. Clarke was starved in the Blues latest 39-19 win against a gutsy second-string Chiefs team that rested their best for this Saturday’s final against the Crusaders at Christchurch. Why they didn’t work his blind or bring him in outside his secondfive is dumbfounding. Although Clarke is the incumbent left wing with a bright future,

he is not as secure under the high ball as George Bridge. Dynamic Sevu Reece deserves to start on the right. Having rested their best when the Crusaders had the bye, the Chiefs will be eager to stop the champions from winning a fifth consecutive Super Rugby title for coach Scott Robertson on Saturday. Should they do so it would be a marvellous achievement for a team that suffered 11 consecutive losses over two seasons. Meanwhile Scott McLaughlin’s second placing 0.2646 seconds behind fellow Kiwi Scott Dixon in the Texas IndyCar series race justifiably has petrol heads raving. It was only McLaughlin’s fourth start in the IndyCar series after having won three consecutive Australian Supercar titles, an event which Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen has dominated in his absence. Dixon is within one win of Mario Andretti’s 52 which stands as second only to AJ Foyt’s 67. Having already won six IndyCar championships, Dixon is within one of the legendary Foyt’s seven. TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

eauden Barrett’s decision to chase the All Black No 10 jersey opens the door for brother Jordie, Damian McKenzie and Will Jordan to challenge for his All Blacks full-back berth. Which just goes to show what incredible backline depth Ian Foster and his fellow national selectors have to choose from. With Foster and Grant Fox former first fives who understand the requirements of the position so well, will they favour 29-year-old Barrett at first-five ahead of Richie Mo’unga who has held the test berth for much of the past two seasons and continues to star for the Crusaders? Run raises $27,000 By ZOE GARDEN The Rotary Club of Highbrook has raised $27,000 at the Goodman Fun Run Walk on March 24. The annual event was supported by local company sponsors, an army of 50-plus volunteers and some 500 participants. “We thank our main sponsors Goodman, EPS Foam (NZ) Ltd, Wynyard Wood and Barnes Plastics Limited and many other generous sponsors who offered goods or gifts in kind who all made this event possible,” Highbrook Rotary Club treasurer Ravinder Manilal said.

From the proceeds raised, Highbrook Rotary will be donating to local charities including Middlemore Foundation, Totara Hospice, Life Education Trust, Mobility Dogs and other smaller charities. For Middlemore Foundation, they are funding the purchase of five much-needed recliner chairs for Middlemore Hospital’s Neonatal unit. “The comfortable chairs enable loved ones to stay longer periods of time with their sick babies when space is so limited,” Manilal said. The next annual Highbrook Rotary Fun Run is on March 2, 2022.

remarkable team effort by Howick Pakuranga Swimming Club (HPK) at the annual Swimming New Zealand National Age Group Championships has cemented the club’s national ranking in the top 10. HPK took a team of 15 to Wellington for the championships, a five-day meet – ending April 23 – for the country’s best 13-to-16-year-olds to compete against each other, said the HPK’s Alastair Bates. “HPK’s athletes did fantastically well concluding the championship as the eighth best club in the country (out of 68),” Bates said. “Our 15 athletes entered 70 different events over the week and made 38 finals. Out of those 38, 31 (82 per cent) swam a new personal best. That’s a fantastic achievement and a testament to the work both they and their coaches put into being prepared both physically and mentally. “Congratulations to all athletes

involved during the week but also to coaches Rachel Palmer and Horst Miehe and managers Leanne Asiata and Katherine Sweetman. Without them the athletes wouldn’t be able to compete.”
