he mother of a teenage boy hospitalised after a vicious group attack in east Auckland says the people who injured her son are “absolutely disgusting” and she wants them to know: “I am not going to stop until they are caught”. Aaron Gray, 18, was walking with a small group of male friends and his girlfriend through Casuarina Road Reserve in Pakuranga in the early hours of March 27 when the incident happened. He sustained multiple injuries, including fractures, a black eye and a haematoma. Gray and his male friends,
who were also injured in the attack, were taken to Middlemore Hospital for medical treatment. He was still in hospital when the Times spoke to him on March 31 but has since been released. Gray says his friends and girlfriend were having a “chilled night” when they decided to go for a walk. They went down an alleyway heading toward a fuel station when they were approached by a larger group of about 20 people, he says. Gray says the bigger group asked if he and his friends were their friends, replied that they weren’t, and approached them. “Some guy walked up to me and asked do I think I’m
tough and do I want to fight. “I backed up and as I was backing up I got struck from the side with a branch in my head. “I was rushed and someone was wrestling me in the bushes. “I just knew I had to fight for my life because I was being beaten up.” Gray says he remembers being tackled, dragged down into bushes and having to fight off someone who was on top of him. He says he’s been told he could suffer long-term effects of the attack, including amnesia. “My skull was broken in a way that didn’t have to be operated on. ➤ Turn to page 3

t is time, once again, for moth pod crusaders to turn their attention to the fields and vegetation in the local communities. For the fourth year running, Pest Free Howick Ward (PFHW) is hosting the popular moth pod competition, where all students in the Howick Ward are eligible to collect moth pods and win prizes. Students, individually or in teams, register and then venture into the community to collect moth pods from vines. Described as “pretty but deadly”, moth plants are an invasive pest plant which grow and smother native vegetation. Each pod has 250-1000 parachute-like seeds which can burst and spread. They can nestle themselves in canopies and cause them to collapse. Students are given kits that have tools to remove the plants and protective gloves, eyewear and herbicide gel to apply to the vines. “The sap is a skin irritant so you need to wear old clothes, long longs, protect your hands and eyes,” Lorelle Stranaghan, co-ordinator of PFHW, says. There are four categories: preschool, primary, intermediate and secondary. First prize is $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $150,

HOWICK 175
Howick brews a very special beer By ZOE GARDEN
H
owick’s Town Crier and former mayor have joined forces to create a special new beer for the region’s milestone anniversary. Morrin Cooper, a former Howick Borough Mayor, approached a local brewer with the idea of making a blend of craft beer specially brewed for Howick’s 175th anniversary which falls this year. With the aid of the Town Crier and former Howick Local Board member Jim Donald, the two have officially declared the craft beer, labelled ‘Howick Centennial Ale’, fit for consumption. Cooper told the Times that, during a centenary, there should be some happy libation to suit the occasion. “It’s a bit stronger than a
lager,” Donald says. “You can consume a bottle quite easily!” The ale’s label has a picture of Cooper and Donald on each side. Donald is dressed as the

Town Crier, and Cooper is seen blowing a trumpet. A warning on the 800ml (three servings) bottle states that it is not ‘safest to drink when shooting, getting pregnant or being pregnant’. “It’s been approved by the Liquor Licensing Society,” Cooper says. ‘Howick Centennial Ale’ is about celebrating Howick’s history and the happiness that came and chose to live in the community, they say. Donald has lived in Howick for 46 years, and Cooper for more than 70. Donald, Cooper and Howick historian Alan La Roche have formed a trust that oversees the ‘shenanigans’ of the 175th celebrations. The ale is available for purchase at New World Howick and Liquorland in Howick.

FMA orders stop order on Flat Bush scheme The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) – Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko – has issued an interim stop order on a scheme linked to a Flat Bush development. The FMA on March 28 ordered a property investment fund to stop marketing an offer in relation to The One in Longhorn Partnership Fund (‘the Fund’), which is only open to wholesale investors, including eligible investors. A stop order is a regulatory tool the FMA can use to stop or prevent advertising or disclosure that is false or misleading, or is likely to confuse consumers or investors, on matters that influence their investment decision. Radio NZ reported the One Management Group had been marketing the fund in sponsored articles under the head-
ing of “50 percent fixed returns over three years for wholesale investors”. “The minimum investment in the development was $250,000 with a maximum $10m, for a maximum 36 month period, with investors to be paid a fixed 50 percent return before tax over that period, regardless of whether the development is ultimately completed or profitable,” RNZ said. The FMA can issue an interim order – which typically lasts for 15 working days – while it considers if a full stop order is warranted. The FMA is concerned about statements by The One Management GP Limited regarding the fund’s returns payable to investors and the level of risk in the investment. The interim stop order prohibits The One Management GP
Limited from: ■ making any offers, issues, sales, or other acquisitions or disposals of units in the Fund; ■ accepting applications for units in the Fund; ■ distributing any restricted communication that relates to the offer of units in the Fund (i.e. removing any relevant internet advertising/ websites, social media posts, sponsored advertising content and billboards); and ■ accepting further contributions, investments, or deposits in respect of units in the Fund. Additionally, James Law Realty, an entity involved in the promotion of the Fund, is prohibited from distributing any restricted communication that relates to the offer of units in the Fund.

Police investigating violent group attack in Pakuranga reserve ➤ From page 1 “The eye has healed up better now and I’m able to open it but it was fully swelling out of my head. “They had to cut a slit on the side of my eye for the blood to leak out.” Gray says police officers visited him on the second day he spent in hospital but he hadn’t heard from police again by March 31. “I’ve messaged them and have heard nothing back. I think it’s disappointing.” The apprentice builder says he’s not sure when he’ll be able to return to work. “I won’t be able to get back on the tools or on-site for a while because my balance has been really affected.” Gray’s girlfriend says the incident was a “really scary experience”. She bit one male who was attacking her boyfriend in an effort to get him to stop, she says. “The first thing I tried to do was hit him but nothing was working so I bit him. The scariest thing was that when I was biting him I latched on as hard as I could but he was still punching Aaron and it wasn’t even affecting him.” She says one of her friends had his head stomped on and was struck in the head with a stick by a member of the bigger group. “He was literally choking up blood. There was blood coming down his head. There was so much blood it looked like a murder scene.” Gray’s mother says the attack on her son was so severe that doctors said he could have died from his injuries if the “impact had been harder” or the swelling on his brain was worse. “They made a slit in the corner of his eye, because behind his eye there was bleeding on his brain and it was causing swelling on his brain and on his eye. “If he had not got to hospital there was a chance he could have died.” She says her son is now suffering from vertigo and his long-term memory is going to be affected by the injuries he sustained in the attack. “They’ve said it often takes a while but he can develop amnesia at some point. “He’s said to me that he feels like when he talks he’s slower and when he responds he’s slower. “And he sees these black patches in his vision. “We’re all hoping it’s just because there’s still swelling on the brain and it will go down.” The woman says following the

attack, she and others provided information and evidence to police about the incident and the identities of those responsible. She’s angry at what she feels is a lack of action by investigators and wants the people who hurt her son and his friends brought to justice. “They’re absolutely disgusting and I want them to know I am not going to stop until they are caught.” Counties Manukau East Police area investigations manager, detective senior sergeant James Gemmell, says: “At around 5am on Sunday 27 March, police were notified after multiple people arrived at Middlemore Hospital, one of whom had serious injuries. “It was established that between 3am-3.30am that morning, an altercation between two groups took place in the Casuarina Road Reserve where they were confronted and assaulted. “Police have spoken with the victims involved and a scene examination was carried out the same morning. “The investigation remains ongoing and police are following positive lines of enquiry to locate and speak to those involved.” ➤ People with information on the incident can phone police on 105, quoting file number 220327/7305, or phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.
Howick 175 Easter Sunrise Service With a tradition of more than 25 years, the annual East Auckland Easter Sunrise Service at 6.30am on Howick’s Stockade Hill assumes a new significance this year. Not only because 2022 is Howick and districts’ 175th anniversary year and Stockade Hill is an historic site, but with the easing of pandemic restrictions the outdoor service with plenty of social distancing space will be a safe and special gathering place for the public. Long-time co-ordinator of the service and Howick 175 Committee chair Rev Dr Richard Waugh says all are welcome. “Joining in the service, organised by the combined churches through the East Auckland Ministers Association, is a wonderful opportunity for residents to celebrate the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and an occasion to
affirm the Christian foundations of the early Fencible settlement with churches having a key role in the early migration of the early families to the district,” he said. “To attend you don’t have to be a regular church attender - everyone is welcome.” With the stand-up service being about 40 minutes and usually with stunning views of the sunrise from the east, the Easter Sunrise Service always attracts a good crowd. This year, in addition to Dr Waugh leading from East City Wesleyan Church, other local Christian leaders taking part will be Pastor Rebecca Green from Elim Christian Centre, Rev Andrew Coyle from All Saints Anglican Church and Pastor Christine Saywell from Eastgate Christian Centre.

Thieves ram-raid Doctor to help in jewellery store Ukraine conflict By CHRIS HARROWELL
By ZOE GARDEN
nother east Auckland business has been targeted by thieves, this time in a ram raid burglary. Police are investigating the break-in which happened just before midnight on April 4 at David Fels Jeweller in Howick. Repairs were being carried out to the front of the Picton Street store when the Times visited on Tuesday morning. Owner David Fels says he was phoned at about 11.50pm on Monday by his security monitoring company to alert him to an “activation” at the store. “I got dressed, came and had a look,” he says. “There was a car on the pavement facing the doorway. “Obviously they’d driven it through the door and actually into the shop. “I think most of the car was inside at one point.” Fels says the thieves reversed the vehicle out and manoeuvred the store’s grill so they could enter the business. “They then came inside, smashed a few more cabinets and helped themselves to the stock. “I don’t know how long it took but when they were finished they left the car where it was with the engine running. “Apparently there were two other cars involved. “They took whatever they’d taken, got in the cars and drove off.” Fels says police were at the business when he arrived late on Monday night and officers returned the following morning to conduct a forensic examination. He believes the cost to repair the damage will be greater than the value of
fter witnessing the bombing and destruction of his homeland from his home in Australia, Dr Andriy Boyko is travelling to Europe to provide critical medical support to those affected by the conflict. Boyko, who attended Macleans and Howick College, told the Times that while the public often saw raw video footage, it is never quite as real as when glimpsing familiar places being bombed and attacked. “Half of my family and friends in Ukraine are displaced and are in relative safety on the western border,” Boyko says. “The other is residing in central Ukraine in a city that hasn’t been attacked yet. They’re getting daily sirens.” The sports medicine registrar has used his contacts and connections in Ukraine to organise a medical supply chain through Europe to bring medicine to those in need. the stolen items. “I’ve got a business, which I’ve been running for 30-odd years. “I’m working hard. It’s not easy to run a business and the jewellery business is definitely on the harder end of things. “We’re just trying to make a living.” Fels was having the damage repaired on Tuesday morning and was hopeful the store would be able to reopen to customers later that day. “We’re in clean-up mode. There was glass everywhere. I’ve had break-ins before, but not for quite a long time and never a ram raid.” As the Times previously reported, thieves also broke into three Howick businesses overnight on March 7-8. Those targeted were Paper Plus on Picton Street, and Honeybun Jewellers and a vape store on Moore Street. The Howick Village
Association (HVA) manager Jane Newbury said at the time there had been a rise in thefts and break-ins around the area in the previous two to three months. A police spokesperson says an investigation is under way into the ram raid at David Fels Jeweller. “The incident was reported to have taken place around 11.45pm. “A stolen vehicle was used in the incident before multiple offenders have entered the store and stolen items. “The offenders have then fled the scene in a second vehicle. “Enquiries are underway into this incident which will include examining the stolen vehicle located at the scene. “Anyone with information about this matter is asked to contact police on 105, quoting file number 220405/7496, or you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

PURC PAYS TRIBUTE TO STALWART It is with profound sadness that I inform the Pakuranga United Rugby Club [PURC] membership and wider community whanau of the passing of PURC stalwart Alex Austin. The family advised me today (March 30) of Alex’s passing yesterday after a challenging period of ill health. Alex was the ultimate club man – every club needs an Alex Austin. He was a tireless contributor to our club for many decades. His wit and humour always underlined a desire to get things done. He served as our President from 1992 to 1996 and then Vice Patron assisting with insightful advice and encouragement to the next generation of office holders at our club. FRESH CHOICE, I’M NOT 65 YET
Getting older and owning your age is something to be proud of, but I was catapulted into Gold Card age range recently by Fresh Choice staff at least five years too soon. Thank you for this reality check for a second time in not so many weeks. Fresh Choice have me tagged as 65 or older although I’ve only just turned 60 therefore don’t have a Gold Card. Fit as a fiddle in my gym clothes and not even grey yet, feelings of confusion raced through my mind when a checkout operator at Fresh Choice, Half Moon Bay, struck out unexpectedly in a clear loud voice, “Do you have a Gold Card?” Desperately, I turned around to look for someone else who is of that age, but nobody is close. I mutter quietly and slightly dejectedly, “No?” and vow to wear makeup and do my hair next time. I hope vainly no other cus-
tomers are within earshot. All too soon, there is a next time and it does happen again; the hair and makeup do nothing to avoid the assault. Thank you Fresh Choice for offering me a Gold Card discount five years too soon or perhaps it’s time to get on the TV programme, “10 Years Younger.” Feeling young and healthy but looking old.

WHY IS AUSSIE VAX PASS NOT GOOD ENOUGH?
My daughter was visiting me from Australia for the first time in two-and-a-half years. She had passed all the PCR tests and had an international vaccination certificate which had on it the three vaccination tests and her passport number. She also had confirmation on March 31 from New Zealand Laboratories that her PCR test for her return to Australia was negative. On April 1, I decided to have a celebration dinner at Denny’s restaurant in Highland Park for my daughter and invited my son and his partner over from Takanini. We drove to Denny’s restaurant and waited outside for my son to arrive. After a while standing outside, we decided to go into the restaurant and
wait there. When we went inside, we were asked for our vaccination certificates, which we presented to the waiter. He scanned my certificate and, when he saw my daughter’s international certificate from Australia on her phone, he said that we would have to leave, as people from Australia were not allowed in the restaurant. I tried to explain to him that the New Zealand Government had let my daughter into the country, with her credentials no problem. He then went to seek advice from the manager and she also refused us entry. I phoned my son to get fish and chips at Botany on his way over from Takanini. and we had them at my home in Pakuranga. A very disappointing evening. I know that we all have to be careful with the Covid problem but this was over the top.
Les Featherstone Pakuranga
➤ Editor’s note: Denny’s says Government regulations do not allow for Australian vaccine passes. The Ministry of Health website states: “At this stage, overseas Covid-19 vaccination certificates and passes cannot be used as proof of vaccination within New Zealand. You will need to apply to have your overseas vaccinations recognised in New Zealand by submitting evidence of them.”

nder the cool shade of a gazebo on a hot autumn day, an east Auckland artist has finished painting Howick Beach in all its glory. The Howick Village Association collaborated with Chorus and the Beautification Trust to have the Chorus cabinet outside the Good Home in Uxbridge Road painted with a 175th celebration theme. Full-time award-winning artist Elise De Silva took on the task and spent approximately 15 hours perfecting her artwork, titled Memories of Howick, over a three day period. It was all done in acrylic. The painting on the front of the cabinet depicts Howick from the perspective of Beach Road in soft green colours. The inspiration, De Silva says, was from a picture taken in 1909. The sides of the cabinet are images of colour that are modern pictures of Howick

At an event you will paint your own masterpiece, make new friendships and have fun. Our Tracee McKenzie evenings are about relaxation, lively conversation, painting and of course a tipple or two. You’ll be guided in painting a masterpiece to be proud of, and the relaxation and stress-relief you deserve. Try something new and join us at one of our great venues around Auckland for a Sip n Paint. A Splash of Colour Sip n Paint evenings are at Rombus Bar & Cafe on the second Thursday of every month and at Botany Commons on the third Tuesday of every month. We love hosting corporate and private events. We can organise and host a creative Sip n Paint event to suit everyone’s skills. We host painting events for adult and children’s birthday parties, hen parties, baby showers, fundraising events, non profit & charity organisation, team building and product launches. Mike Willoughby founded Meta Financial Solutions when he saw a need for better financial planning for young families, first time investors, and small business owners in New Zealand. Mike has lived locally all his life and, as a young property investor himself, decided to turn his Mike Willoughby passion into a career and share his knowledge as a financial advisor. Whether it’s first-home buyers, property investors, or landowners looking to subdivide or develop, Mike says: “I love helping our clients design and implement their financial goals, and ultimately achieve greater financial freedom and wealth.” Nothing frustrates Mike more than when he meets potential clients who have received poor or limited advice from traditional lenders. “A recent client had been told that they might be able to secure the investment property they were keen on. After an in-depth review, we were able to help them secure two properties! It’s great to be part of a journey like that.” “With a young family myself, I also have a keen interest in helping younger people develop greater financial awareness and literacy before they leave school. That’s something I’m working on for the future.” Get in touch with Mike for a coffee and free consultation.

Some say writing is as fun as having a wisdom tooth removed. By a child. With a fork. Well, call me a masochist because writing winning content for small-medium Kiwi businesses is my gig. I write authentic, lively, concise content to engage your target audience – whether that be Alicia Vroegop online or traditional formats. Why is that important? More sales. Your customers need to find you easily, understand what you do, and feel they can trust you. With visible, clear and credible content, you win with improved enquiry rates! Wait, why is good content still important in an age defined by interpretive dance and goofy videos? Sure, your Tik-Tok video of your landscape crew twerking on Friday went viral; but it didn’t tell us you’re a tropical garden specialist. And that funny reel about the bee swarm got a lot of attention… from the apiary community. The purpose of written content is to attract and engage relevant customers. And we humans are timepoor creatures with attention spans that are shrinking faster than a male appendage in a snowstorm. Good content responds to that by grabbing folks by the eyeballs and inspiring action. Whether it’s your website, product brochures, or anything requiring words, you need content that sells rather than inducing a coma. Got that? Then get me.

Social Media and Marketing Management for Tradies
Anyone that needs to fundraise understands the pressure of coming up with new and innovative campaigns with least effort for most profit. Bo, founder of Fundraise Factory, saw a gap in the market after being “voluntold” on many occasions to be the fundraising manager for sports teams, social clubs and school PTA’s. She knew there had to be a better solution for time-poor people to raise money faster without smelling like an onion at a sausage sizzle. The trusty BBQ, car wash and bake sale are great, but you need the volunteers and most of the time make very little profit for all that effort. Fundraise Factory have hundreds of products, free tools and ideas on how to raise funds quickly with tangible and useful items that people want and need. Directors Pip and daughter Bo Burns, well-known in the community for all sorts of work, are both passionate about helping people, and offering the best solutions to help groups raise money. Fundraise Factory’s key strengths are knowledge, service, quality products and ideas. “We just go the extra mile and enjoy what we do,” says Bo. “We show you how to fundraise smarter, not harder in an easy, fast and profitable way.”
Pip Burns started her promotional business in 2003 from her home in Bucklands Beach. Bo, soon after returning from her OE, knew that Pip and she would make great business partners; Bo also loved the marketing and creativity that this industry brings. Nineteen years later, they both agree it was a great decision to be in business as a Mother & Daughter duo, and have enjoyed their business journey to date. Promo Factory brands and supplies everything from pens, corporate gifts to trade and corporate apparel.

Rachel Benns is a proud Howick local. She grew up in the area, attended local schools, and raised her two daughters here. She’s proud of her east Auckland roots and pleased that alongside the team at Resthaven Funerals she can continue caring for families in their time of need. After 28 years in the industry, a qualified funeral director, certificate in funeral directing and a board member for the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand, Rachel has stepped up to take the helm. She is the first elected woman president of the FDANZ association in its 85-year history. She says “continuing the great work that’s been done in the advocacy space” is one of her priorities. She’s already had one “great win” in convincing the Government to classify funeral directors as critical workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning rapid antigen tests are available to the funeral sector so they can continue to help families. Dealing with grief has been amplified by the additional pressures of the pandemic and has placed more stress on the industry and its people. Rachel says closed funerals, limited attendances, travel restrictions and vaccine requirements add to workloads and create extra challenges. “It’s really proven for families they need to say goodbye, have a meaningful farewell, and gather together. We need to mourn the loss of a loved one – that’s just part of who we are as human beings.”

Pine Harbour ferry trial picks up pace A
uckland Transport (AT) has launched its new weekend ferry service trial between Pine Harbour Marina and Downtown Auckland. The trial will run until Monday April 25 and will also operate all four days over the Easter weekend. The trial, which began on March 19, is operated by SeaLink using vessels with capacity for 99 seated passengers and a maximum of six bikes. Currently, there is a popular public transport ferry service between Pine Harbour Marina and Auckland Downtown Ferry Terminal, but it only operates on weekdays. Franklin Local Board’s Malcom Bell said the weekend service has long been advocated for by the board. “The weekend service will allow people from the Maraetai, Beachlands, and Pine Harbour areas the option to use public transport to visit the city centre (and beyond) instead of driving to the city centre,” said Bell. The board’s deputy chair Angela Fulljames agrees. “They will be able to enjoy a faster, easier and more direct journey by ferry. This will also allow Pine Harbour to become a destination for people wanting to visit from the greater Auckland area,” she said. Depending on the success of the trial, AT said it will investigate the introduction of a permanent weekend service later this year. AT’s ferry services manager Gareth Willis said that the provision of a weekend ferry service from Pine Harbour has been

on AT’s radar for some time. “This trial is important to not only gauge community interest in a weekend service, but for us to also test the operational viability,” Willis said. “Funding has been secured to undertake the trial in order to learn important lessons before a permanent service can be offered. This trial is possible due to the co-operation of SeaLink Pine Harbour Limited, funding from Auckland Transport/ Auckland Council and Waka Kotahi. “We thank the local board for its support and urge everyone to use the service. Kids will travel free at weekends, there will be regular sailings and this weekend service opens the area up as a day trip destination for Aucklanders. “It’s really exciting for us to be able to offer this trial and we hope you’ll head out for a trip on a weekend soon.”

The Covid comeback is on! Over the weekend, I saw something exciting around east Auckland. It was happening in the cafes in Howick, at the shops in the Botany Town Centre and around Barry Curtis Park in Ormiston. People were back. New Zealand’s successful response to the Omicron outbreak and our high vaccination rates meant last week we were able to announce changes to the Covid-19 Protection Framework. Removing My Vaccine Pass and mandates has allowed us to live more normal lives. As we come off the Omicron peak, we need to be cautious of overreacting – not moving too soon
into Orange Light (or Green Light as the Leader of the Opposition demanded in December 2021). However, we can support greater economic activity while protecting those who need it most. Although our economy is now larger than pre-Covid levels, with record low unemployment and tourism about to reopen, many Kiwis are feeling the pinch. That’s why last Friday, we gave 1.4 million Kiwis an income boost with a massive package of support. Families, caregivers, seniors, beneficiaries, students, commuters and minimum wage earners especially will see the benefit of this. When I talked to locals over the
Labour List MP
Naisi Chen weekend, they were upbeat about the future. One café owner told me they were having their busiest week since the Omicron outbreak began. Reducing Covid-19 restrictions while giving an income boost to those who are struggling will do that. New Zealand is gaining momentum and it’s shining through on the streets of east Auckland. Naisi Chen is a Labour List MP based in Botany
Auckland Council and Auckland Transport have once again shown their true colours when it comes to their view of people who use cars to get around Auckland, drive to work, drop their kids at school or go to the shops. Auckland Council’s new parking strategy is an anticar strategy, designed to make your life more difficult if you choose to use a car to get around Auckland. The strategy proposed that parking your car on the side of the road should now be considered the lowest priority use of road space by Auckland
Transport and proposes to remove thousands of car parking spaces across Auckland. This is bad policy which will have a significant impact on our communities and particularly a significant impact on small businesses who rely on customers being able to park outside their stores. As if small businesses hadn’t had a tough enough time over the last couple of years, they are now set to lose a key aspect of their business that provides quick and easy access for local consumers. And for what? Bus lanes

and cycle ways? AT would take away a key lifeline for these businesses to improve the lives of people who catch a bus by a marginal amount. The socalled benefits simply do not stack up. Not only is the policy bad, but the way that it is being sold to Aucklanders is incredibly arrogant. Auckland Transports head of integrated network planning Andrew McGill told the NZ Herald, “We do have a predetermined agenda.” This arrogance from an unelected bureaucrat makes Aucklanders’ blood

their cars. Yes, we need better public transport choices but for most people that is still not a practical choice people can currently make due to the complexity of their lives. Auckland Transport

Hawkeswood set for NZ rally champs ➤ From page 16 Son of former NZ Rally Championship winner Andrew Hawkeswood, Jack is aiming to build experience in New Zealand before heading overseas to compete, with first port of call likely to be the USA rally championship. “It really is a privilege to be a part of TGRNZ this season in the New Zealand Rally Championship,” Jack said. “Although I’m under no illusion that the competition will be the very best the championship has seen for years, I will certainly be aiming to be amongst the pointy end of the field, while bringing consistency and showcasing the skills learned from the Motorsport NZ Elite Academy over the last 12 months.” TGRNZ has been keen to support an up and coming local New Zealand driver for the forthcoming season, particularly with the World Rally Championship returning to Aotearoa for

“It’s also a big year for us in New Zealand with the factory Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team in action on our shores and a great opportunity for us to celebrate and promote our philosophy of finding NZ’s Next World Champion.” Rally Otago is the first round of the NZ Rally Championship and begins this coming weekend.

Police have arrested and charged a person in relation to several ram raid incidents in east and south Auckland. Detective inspector Karen Bright, of Counties Manukau Police’s criminal investigation branch, says the incidents happened in Flat Bush, Drury, and Paerata between 11.50pm on March 31 and 1am the following day. “A significant amount of property was recovered, including three stolen vehicles,” she says. “Police are making enquiries into a fourth incident that occurred at a petrol station in Pakuranga. “One person has been arrested and is now before the Youth Court on burglary, dishonesty offending, and driving charges. “Enquiries are ongoing and police are not ruling out further charges being laid.” A police spokesperson says a dairy in Chapel Road was the target in the Flat

n east Auckland pharmacy has suffered a second break-in in less than three weeks. At 5.48am on Saturday April 2, a man threw a large rock through the glass door of Unichem Pakuranga in Cortina Place. This occurred 16 days after the first burglary (Times, March 22) where an unidentified figure used the base of a vaccination flag to shatter the same entrance. The door had been replaced from damage in the first break-in. In footage seen by the Times, the burglar, dressed in dark clothes, gloves and a hoodie, rushed into the pharmacy and attempted to use a drill to open the safe. Unsuccessful, he then took the tills from behind reception. The tills were later found in a park nearby. He exited the pharmacy at 5.49am. Vicky Chan, the centre manager of Unichem Pakuranga, says she and her staff are feeling “uncertain, angry and unsafe”. “It does look like the same person,” she says. “He went straight into the safe with the tools he brought.”

COMMENT
New recruits are shining A
ny doubts the Blues Pacific Super Rugby squad have genuine depth were dispelled with their impressive seven-tries-to-one 46-16 win against rugged Moana Pasifika at Eden Park on Saturday. With so many top players either injured or rested, new recruits have filled the breach admirably from former Crusaders old dog Luke Romano to 20-year-old youngsters Anton Segner and Corey Evans. Under the admirable captaincy of non-stop flanker Dalton Papalii, Romano and James Tucker have strengthened the locking and lineout depth and German-born Segner, though relatively slim, is an exciting No 8 back-up for gifted All Black Hoskins Sotutu. With Beauden Barrett, league convert Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Harry Plummer injured, first-five Stephen Perofeta has gelled beautifully with champion halfback Finlay Christie, taking excellent
options whether kicking for territory or sparking backline attacks. Outside him Evans and Bryce Heem formed a strong centre combination in the absence of Rieko Ioane with Evans accelerating for a smart try against Moana Pasifika to showcase his talent. Blessed with dynamic wings Caleb Clarke and Mark Telea and Zarn Sullivan continuing to grow at fullback, the Blues should continue to make a strong bid for the title although the Crusaders and fiery Chiefs will also be tough. However, with the bottomplaced Highlanders giving the defending champion Crusaders a 14-17 scare, there are no certainties. Having won six of seven, the improved Brumbies and Reds actually lead the table from the Crusaders and Blues (five of six)

but have faced easier opposition. No one should under-estimate powerful No 8 Pita Gus Sowakula who had a titanic battle against Ardie Savea in the Chiefs’ latest 30-29 win against the Hurricanes. He’s always been a force but this
year is busier and fitter in his bid for All Black honours. In a country blessed with exceptional hookers, Blues rake Kurt Eklund showed he’s right up there with his three tries against Moana Pasifika from rolling mauls. Former Highlander Ash Dixon and All Blacks Dane Coles and Codie Taylor are other hookers who have perfected the same art but have not scored three in the same game at this level. Meanwhile, what a brilliant climax to the women’s World Cup one-day cricket championship with Australia beating defending champion England by 71 runs thanks mainly to Alyssa Healy’s magnificent 170 from 138 balls at beautiful Hagley Park, Christchurch. With Australia amassing 3565, England’s cause looked hopeless but Nat Sciver got them to a respectable 285 thanks to her remarkable unbeaten 148.
Agnew’s Angle
with Ivan Agnew
Fittingly, Healy’s performance rates above anyone, male or female, at such a world championship with Sciver moving to third. Having lost their first three games, England did well to make the final against a champion Australian team that won nine from nine under Meg Lanning’s superb captaincy. Full marks to the Christchurch crowd for turning up in force after New Zealand failed to make the play-offs despite having outstanding batters of the calibre of Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr and Amy Satterthwaite. The trouble was they could not form strong partnerships and their bowling lacked depth. Meanwhile having been out of action for several months recovering from hip and eye surgery, I’m back to haunt readers with my Angle, at least for a short time. MOTOR RACING
Hawkeswood set for NZ Rally Championship
Twenty one-year-old Jack Hawkeswood has been confirmed for the New Zealand Rally Championship this season, starting at Rally Otago. He will campaign a Toyota Yaris with support from Toyota Gazoo Racing NZ (TGRNZ). His campaign will include competing in Repco Rally New Zealand – a round of the World Rally Championship – when it roars into life between September 29 and October 2. It will be a special moment for the Whitford driver when he and co-driver Sarah Brennan take the start – and even more so if they make it to the Sunday leg of the rally. That will see them compete in the spectacular special stage on the family farmland named after two of his great grandfathers with whom he shares his name – “Jack’s Ridge”. Hawkeswood is the 2020/2021 New Zealand Hillclimb Champion, a MotorSport New Zealand Gold Star Recipient and a graduate of the 2021 MSNZ Elite Academy. He will begin his 2022 campaign in a AP4 Rally specification Toyota Yaris before moving to the fearsome Gazoo Racing ‘GR’ version of the car. ➤ Turn to page 11

Crowe makes mark in NZ Open Water Champs I
t was an outstanding weekend in Taupo for young Howick Pakuranga Swimming Club member Ella Crowe, competing in the New Zealand Open Water Championships. Crowe, 17, secured a trio of age group titles in the 10km, 5km and 2.5km competitions as well as a gold, silver and bronze in the open women’s division. An early start on Saturday March 26 saw Crowe leading through the first five kilometres of the gruelling 10km marathon swim until the title holder Ruby Heath, from Otago, swam through for the win leaving Crowe and Christchurch’s Abbey Smale battling a sprint finish over the last 100 metres. Crowe prevailed by 1 second to take the silver medal in the open women’s division and claimed gold in her age group. Less that three hours later, the Pakuranga College student stepped up for the 2.5km com-

petition. Crowe and long-time swimming friend and rival Talitha McEwan from Mount Maunganui didn’t hold back. They both led the pack commanding an early lead and swam side-by-side right up
until the last 50 metres where Crowe’s sprint finish secured her an impressive gold in both the open women’s and age group divisions. As the sun began to rise early Sunday morning, Crowe
stepped up again for the 5km event where Smale gained an early lead which she held until the half-way point. Heath took the lead which she held through the final lap taking out first place and the gold medal with Smale and Crowe finishing second and third respectively in the open women’s division. Crowe was more than happy to come away with a gold for the age group. When asked what the highlight of the weekend was, Crowe said, “It was a totally fantastic weekend. I am very happy with my results and where my swimming is at the moment. Being able to compete with the senior swimmers was a real highlight. They are all great girls and we are all really supportive of each other. “I would like to thank the officials and volunteers from Swimming New Zealand as, without them, events like this would not be able to happen.”
