Police catch thieves after bakery raided

By CHRIS HARROWELL

A

n east Auckland bakery and vape store are the latest targets of thieves who appear to believe they have the right to help themselves to other people’s property. Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers, of Counties Manukau Police’s criminal investigation branch, says officers responded to reports of an alleged burglary at a commercial address in Springs Road, East Tamaki, at about 11.25pm on Sunday, December 3. A group of people had broken the front door of the Dark Vapes store. “Despite the initial damage, those involved were unable to gain entry and returned to their vehicle before leaving the address,” Vickers says. A short time later, police received a report of a second incident on Ti Rakau Drive, where a vehicle was used to gain entry into Pakuranga Bakery. “Police understand the same group has been responsible for both incidents,” Vickers says. “Those involved have entered

Pakuranga Bakery in Ti Rakau Drive was damaged during a ram-raid burglary on December 3. Times photo Wayne Martin the premises and taken some items, before leaving the scene in a second vehicle, leaving the other behind at the address.” CCTV footage of the incident shows several people getting out of a hatchback vehicle before it’s reversed into the front of the bakery multiple times. At least four people are then seen running toward the damaged store to try to gain entry. Several of the thieves appear to be carrying what resemble hockey sticks. After taking items from inside

the bakery they get down on the floor to crawl back out underneath the security screen, which has been pushed in. The group runs across the car park to a waiting vehicle and get into it before fleeing, while the vehicle used in the ram-raid burglary was left parked in front of the bakery. Just after midnight on December 4, police were then alerted to this vehicle travelling in Glen Innes and located it as while travelling in a dangerous manner from Pakuranga towards

Manurewa. Vickers says police successfully deployed spikes towards the vehicle on the Orams Road overbridge. “The vehicle has eventually crashed into a fence on Weymouth Road, where four youths were subsequently taken into custody a short distance away. Four people have since been referred to Youth Aid.” Police will not tolerate such careless behaviour in the community, Vickers says. “This was a reckless incident, which could have resulted in serious harm or loss of life to those involved. Our message to those who choose to continue to engage in this offending is: You will be held to account.” Police enquiries are ongoing to locate another two people who are believed to be involved in the incidents. Anyone with footage or information that may assist is asked to contact police via the 105 phone service or online at https://www. police.govt.nz/use-105, using Update My Report, referencing file number 231204/8366.

Call for Williamson to be investigated over comment

By LAURA KVIGSTAD,

Auckland Council reporter, Funded by New Zealand on Air

H

owick ward councillor Maurice Williamson’s hot-mic moment has landed him in hot water with Auckland Council. Williamson was attending the Planning, Environment and Parks Committee meeting online on November 30 when his microphone went live. He appeared to accuse Wellington mayor Tory Whanau, who is currently the subject of controversy, of publicly engaging in embarrassing behaviour, a comment heard by committee members. The Times is unable to report the specifics of what Williamson said as it was based on an unsubstantiated rumour. His comment stems from news reports Whanau was intoxicated while at a Wellington bar during a recent night out. Last week she publicly admitted she has a drinking problem and is seeking help for it. Williamson’s comment was

Howick ward councillor Maurice Williamson. File photo supplied met with outcry from members around the committee table and when he was asked for an apology there was silence. Just minutes before the comment, he’d been noticeably absent for a vote. This follows from a week prior where the councillor had been missing in action when a notice of motion he emailed disappeared.

Cr Shane Henderson tried to give Williamson some grace, calling the moment an accident. “There is a worrying trend of councillors’ online attendance. These phone incidents are happening every meeting,” Henderson said. The advent of online attendance has presented issues at council with other similar microphone disruptions and absences despite appearing online. As the meeting was coming to a close, Williamson chimed in to apologise, appearing unaware what was broadcast. “If something came through, I had an arrow through the microphone, I apologise for it,” he said. “It was never meant to be over the microphone. I am at an endof-life care centre.” Independent Maori Statutory Board member Tau Henare wasn’t having a word of the councillor’s apology and called on the chair to sanction Williamson for his comment. “‘At an end-of-life care centre’ – stop trying to get out of it,” Henare said. “What an ugly man Maurice has turned out to be.”

Deputy mayor Desley Simpson tried to signal to the chair to mute Williamson and Henare. Williamson’s apology didn’t cut it for Cr Julie Fairey, who suggested the comments were grounds for defamation. “This is way beyond apology grounds, mate. This has serious implications,” Fairey said. Chair Richard Hills said it was

a serious matter and would need to be investigated by the council’s chief executive. “If what has been said has been said it will be investigated. This will obviously be taken further,” Hills said. The council has since taken down the section of the broadcast where Williamson’s remark was made.

PEOPLE INJURED IN CRASH Traffic was diverted following a multi-vehicle crash in east Auckland that left several people injured. Police responded to the incident which happened on Maraetai Road in Beachlands on December 4. A police spokesperson said the crash was reported at about 11.47am near the intersection with Jack Lachlan Drive.

“One person was transported to hospital with serious injuries, two other people have suffered minor injuries. “Diversions are being put in place and motorists are advised to expect delays.” Northbound traffic on Maraetai Road was diverted down Jack Lacklan Drive through Beachlands while southbound traffic was still able to get through on Maraetai Road.

‘We will deliver for Kiwis’ New Zealand officially has a new Coalition Government with National, ACT and New Zealand First. At the election, New Zealanders put their trust in these three parties to steer the country towards a better and more prosperous future - and that is exactly what we will deliver. Kiwis voted for a Government focused on rebuilding the economy, easing the cost of living, restoring law and order and delivering better public services. I know that the last few years have been incredibly tough for many people across New Zealand and I want to get started right away on improving the lives of Kiwis. We are starting the way we

mean to go on - ambitious for New Zealand. With 49 actions to deliver in the next 100 days, our plan is hugely ambitious, but we will be working as hard as we can. That plan includes introducing legislation to repeal Three Waters, stopping work on Auckland Light Rail and withdrawing central government from Let’s Get Wellington Moving. The Coalition Government has promised to rein in the astronomic public sector spending that Labour oversaw and will, as promised, introduce legislation to narrow the Reserve Bank’s mandate to a single focus on price stability. The explosion of crime under the previous Government was

shameful, and I have announced the prioritisation of several actions to make Kiwis and their families safer. That means getting rid of Labour’s prisoner reduction target, which meant fewer offenders going to prison even while violent crime was rising. The Government is also making good on our promise to crack down on gangs by introducing legislation that will ban gang patches and insignia in public and ensure that gang membership is considered an aggravating factor during sentencing. The Coalition Government has announced quick actions to improve New Zealand’s public services, which have fallen off a cliff in the past six years.

Raised crossing proposed due to ‘crash risk’ “ A  By CHRIS HARROWELL

nother of east Auckland’s busiest roads may soon get a raised pedestrian crossing in an ongoing effort to slow traffic down and prevent crashes. As previously reported, Auckland Transport (AT) is planning to construct three raised safety platforms on Ti Rakau Drive, six raised safety platforms on side streets, and one raised intersection as part of the Eastern Busway public transport project. The agency last year proposed to construct a raised crossing on Pakuranga Road before reversing course following vocal opposition from the local community and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, who labelled the plan “crazy”. AT is now proposing to constrict a raised crossing on Aviemore Drive in Highland Park. The plan has been revealed in a recent letter the agency’s road safety engineering team sent to Brown. The team met with him in late October, before the new National-led coalition Government was formed and Brown was named Transport Minister, to discuss the ‘Aviemore Drive Safety improvements project’. During that meeting the MP told the team that while there’s a need for a proposed new roundabout, the initial design had too many raised crossings. “After considering your comments we revised the design and following a reduction in our funding we had to reprioritise all the road safety projects,” AT told Brown. “The prioritisation has been completed and we are now ready to start consulting with the local community.” AT’s letter states between 2018 and 2022 there were 36 recorded crashes on the stretch of Aviemore Drive between Highland Park Drive and Lewisham Street. These incidents included two crashes that resulted in fatalities. Four resulted

“We have presented the revised design to the Howick Local Board, which they supported.” AUCKLAND TRANSPORT

in serious injuries and nine resulted in minor injuries. To address the “high crash risk”, AT is proposing changes to make Aviemore Drive safer for pedestrians and motorists. The agency’s initial proposal for that location included changing the intersection at Highland Park Drive and Aviemore Drive from one controlled by a give-way to a roundabout. It would also have involved installing raised pedestrian and cyclist crossings on each leg of the roundabout and installing four raised pedestrian crossings along Aviemore Drive and one across the entrance of Aberfeldy Avenue. The updated design has resulted in all the raised crossings, except for one on Aviemore Drive, being removed. “In addition, the pedestrian and cyclist crossings at the roundabout will no longer be raised,” the agency told Brown. “We have presented the revised design to the Howick Local Board, which they supported.” AT says it plans to seek feedback from the local community on the proposal between November 27 and December 10. It will also speak to the people at properties adjacent to the roundabout. Members of the public will be able to provide feedback via the project’s website, by phone and email and the proposed changes will be explained in English and Chinese.

That means re-introducing key targets for the health system and to lift educational performance, ensuring primary and intermediate schools are teaching an hour of maths, reading and writing from start of 2024, and banning mobile phone use in class. It also means introducing legislation to disestablish the Māori Health Authority, because healthcare should be based on need not race, and to unravel Labour’s Polytechnic mega-merger blunder, Te Pūkenga, which has been a disaster for New Zealand’s vocational sector. New Zealand faces a number of challenges and New Zealanders can have confidence that the Coalition Government has both the team and the strategy to

MP for Botany

Christopher Luxon address them. There is a lot of work to do but I look forward to making a positive difference as we get this country back on track. It is a huge honour to serve New Zealand as its 42nd Prime Minister. The Coalition Government and I have been entrusted with a massive responsibility which is to deliver for the people of New Zealand and to give clear, demonstrable and measurable improvements to the quality of their lives. I will work hard every day to improve the lives of New Zealanders and deliver for this fantastic country. Christopher Luxon is the Prime Minister and MP for Botany

Man charged with manslaughter over unborn baby’s death

A

man allegedly involved in an illegal street racing incident in east Auckland that resulted in the death of an unborn baby has been charged with manslaughter. Detective senior sergeant Dean Batey, of Counties Manukau East Police’s criminal investigation branch, says the Auckland man was charged following an investigation into an incident that happened while illegal street racing was taking place. It happened just after 11pm on May 19 at the intersection of Bruce Roderick and Offenhauser Drives in East Tamaki, he says. “Around this time a vehicle that was allegedly involved in the illegal street racing struck a spectator, who was pregnant. “The woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition and emergency surgical procedures were required to be carried out. “Tragically, the baby girl did not even survive the day and succumbed to her catastrophic injuries.”

Batey says an investigation has been ongoing into the circumstances of what took place that night. “The 22-year-old driver is already before the Manukau District Court on numerous driving offences. Police have now laid an additional charge of manslaughter against this man. “While this case remains before the court, I would like to reiterate that illegal street racing causes great concern to police and our community, and for good reason. “Time and time again, police have issued warnings to those taking part in this illegal activity about the risks they’re posing to themselves and others. “This also extends to the spectators who are enabling this behaviour. “Let this tragedy that occurred on May 19 be a reminder the risks have very real consequences.” Batey says while charges have been laid, police want to hear from witnesses who were at the scene at the time.

“We know a number of people were filming proceedings.” Police have set up an online portal for witnesses to upload any photos or video from the time. Go online to www.safety-yellow.nc3.govt.nz. Information can also be provided through the 105 phone service, or by going online to www. police.govt.nz/use-105 and using ‘Update My Report’, referencing file number 230520/3570. Or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Meanwhile, a person was injured following a single-vehicle cash in east Auckland on December 1. Police say they believe he was struck by a vehicle while lying on a road, in poor lighting, in Pakuranga Heights. The incident happened in Walworth Avenue just before 2.30am. The injured man, 33, underwent emergency surgery and was in a critical condition. The police’s serious crash unit is investigating the incident.

Colourful Christmas We’ve lots to comes to rest home look forward to moves on, another very quickly fills that space. Compared to other retail centres where empty retail spaces dominate, our village has vacancies for only a short time so that must be taken as a sign of confidence. Some of the next events to enjoy and participate in are the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday, December 10. This year is the 70th anniversary of the parade organised by the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust. There is still time to participate in the latest ‘Shop & Win’ promotion that finishes on December 15 and children aged 5-12 can hunt for the Christmas Mouse from December 11-22. The prize is a huge toy hamper!

Remember also the annual Carols by Candlelight on Stockade Hill at 8.15pm on Sunday, December 17 – a great family event. I could list countless people and organisations to thank for their contribution to the village in 2023 but won’t name any apart from Jane and Sarah from the Howick Village Association for their efforts not only for the work in the visible promotions but in the many behind-thescenes tasks that managing Howick Village entails. Police recover dog after violent theft

T

wo people have been the victims of a violent carjacking in east Auckland. Counties Manukau East Police area prevention manager, Inspector Rakana Cook, says police responded to reports of an aggravated robbery at an address in Bucklands Beach at about 12.25pm on November 25. “Two persons were sitting in their car, parked on Murvale Drive, when they were approached by a male. “It’s understood this person has presented a weapon and forced both people out of the car before taking it and fleeing the area towards MacLeans Road. “This male has also taken a number of personal items, which were in the vehicle at the time.” A few hours later, just before 5pm, the vehicle, along with two others which are also alleged to have been stolen, arrived at a petrol station in

Pakuranga. Cook says the police’s Eagle helicopter was already monitoring the situation after an informant reported one of the vehicles doing burnouts on Pakuranga Road. “With the assistance of our police helicopter, ground units were guided in and attempted to block in the vehicles. “However, upon those in the vehicle sighting police, two fled the area and a third was abandoned.” Police continued to monitor one of the vehicles as it drove dangerously through Pakuranga, eventually reconvening with the second vehicle on Portadown Avenue in the same suburb. “At this stage, all three individuals were apprehended without further incident,” Cook says. “This was a volatile incident and a number of police staff attended to bring this to a resolution. “We thank the mem-

bers of the public who reported these matters to us in a swift manner, which allowed our staff to respond accordingly.” Police found a dog, which was taken into the care of Animal Management, in one of the vehicles recovered from the incident, Cook says. “A few hours later, one of the sergeants noted a dog had been reported stolen from an earlier burglary and recognised the vehicle involved. “The dog, which was safe and well, was happily reunited with its owner. “This was fantastic work from police to conclude another incident and bring a resolution to another victim.” An 18-year-old male was due to appear in the Manukau District Court on November 27 charged with aggravated burglary and the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. Two others, both aged 17, have been referred to Youth Aid.

FOOD SCRAP BINS NOT WORTH IT

The first Friday some of us in our street put out our food scraps bins they were not collected. I reported it on the Monday and they were collected on the Tuesday. Two weeks later and a truck has just collected the stuff in our food scraps bins in The Glebe at 7am Saturday, December 2. Once again, we put out our bins and once again they have not been collected. However someone has been paid to come around and attached a tag to each thanking us for using the bins. It seems to me that this plan to get us to reduce landfill by having a separate collection for food scraps is a waste of resources – the plastic bins, the provision of bin liners, the truck and fuel, two men required to empty the bins, the transport to the station where

the stuff will be used and all the resources needed for that station to operate and the frustration I feel having to ring the Council to tell them to do the job, to list but a few issues. So much for saving the planet! Vicky Williamson, Cockle Bay

LOVELY GESTURE FROM MYSTERY WOMAN Today at Botany Town Centre [Tuesday, November 28] I had a bit of an episode with my toddler who I could just not settle down. A woman came to me, offered to walk my stroller and things out for me as I wrangled my two-year-old out of there. She took us all the way to my car, then reached into her shopping and gave my girl a new Squishmallow [soft

toy] and insisted we keep it and gave me a big hug – no judgment or telling me what’s what and I just appreciated it so, so much. I have no idea how to repay you. The only thing I could think of is writing in the local paper and hope it reaches you. Thank you again. Your kindness was absolutely everything to me. Name withheld

onsumer NZ estimates Kiwis collectively lose more than $10 million on unspent gift cards every year, and urges last-minute shoppers to research before gifting vouchers this season. Gemma Rasmussen, head of research and advocacy at Consumer NZ, explains that unfair gift card expiry dates means not all gift cards are created equally. “Based on the complaints we’ve received over the years, gift cards seem to act more like a gift to retailers than to ourselves or others,” said Rasmussen. According to Consumer NZ, retailers get a sweet deal from gift vouchers; they get payment in advance and the prospect of further sales when the card is used. Retailers also have the chance to keep any remaining money once the card expires. “One in four gift card holders end up stuck with a card

theatre

they can’t use because either the card has expired or the retailer’s gone bust. And more than half of gift card holders unable to redeem their voucher still had more than $20 unspent.” As well as offering paltry expiry periods, some gift cards are hard to use too. “Half of gift card users experience problems using their cards – from checking their balance to only being able to use their card at limited stores and, crucially, finding something to buy,” said Rasmussen. “We don’t think it’s fair that retailers can pocket your money without providing something in return. We have been calling for gift cards to be valid for a minimum of five years, which aligns with what shoppers in the US are entitled to. “Unless the retailer offers a fair redemption period, we recommend gifting cash. Not only is it nostalgic, there are

no strings attached.” Consumer NZ encourages shoppers who decide to purchase gift vouchers this year to buy from the retailers on its “nice” list. These stores have extended their redemption periods to five years or dropped their expiries altogether.

GIFT CARDS: THE NICE LIST These retailers have either dropped expiry dates entirely, or extended redemption periods to 5 years. Gift cards with no expiry date Apple Store JB Hi-Fi Baby Kathmandu Factory Macpac Barkers Noel Bunnings Leeming Countdown EB Games Farro Fresh Foot Locker Glassons Hallensteins

Gift cards with a 5-year expiry period Babycity Hannahs Hunting and Fishing Number One Shoes Shoe Clinic

GIFT CARDS: THE NAUGHTY LIST These retailers still offer paltry 12-month expiry dates – Consumer NZ doesn’t recommend buying gift cards from them. Gift cards with 12-month expiry dates Bendon Lingerie (e-gift cards last 3 years) Booksellers Event Cinemas Freedom Furniture Hoyts Cinemas Just Jeans Mobil Oil Restaurant Association Smiggle Smiths City Stirling Sports Ticketmaster Westfield Shopping Centres

What happens after Christmas?

Can I return a gift that you do not like? No! You cannot return an unwanted gift unless the retailer has a policy which allows returns. Usually, if a return is allowed, there will be conditions such as giving you a credit but not a refund, so you will need to buy something else at the retailer’s shop. When buying a gift, enquire about the return policy of the retailer. You may be able to get an exchange card. This can be important if the gift does not fit because you guessed the wrong size or the colour does not suit the person receiving your gift. Gifts that are returned must be undamaged and

Any payment holiday should be recorded in an agreed document, so you are aware of the changes to the amount you will be paying and any extension to the term of your loan. More awards for the exceptional Xtreme Beauty T he director of east Auckland’s popular and successful Xtreme Beauty, Kesh Nand, is celebrating another win with her fabulous team. They’ve just taken out the accolade for Business Excellence in Retail Trade at the 14th Annual Indian Newslink Business Awards, held in Auckland on November 27. Kesh was presented with the prestigious award by the Leader of the Opposition, Chris Hipkins, and the award’s sponsor, Shekar Mani. She’s thrilled to have received the award and is grateful to the judges and Indian Newslink for the honour. “It’s an award that we dedicate to our team and all of our loyal customers,” she says. This latest industry recognition follows a very successful past couple of years for Kesh and her team, with her having been named Businesswoman of the Year at the 2022 Indian Newslink Business Awards. Kesh was thrilled to have received that honour at the glittering ceremony attended by hundreds of VIPs including political luminaries Christopher Luxon and Jacinda Ardern. “It came as a big surprise but we’ve been work-

ing so hard and it’s paying off,” a delighted Kesh said. “This award is about our whole team. They’re all really excited and proud. “I’ve got a great team who provide excellent customer service and that’s why we won. It’s all down to teamwork and our loyal customers.” Kesh, who also won the Retail Business of the Year Award in 2019, has seen her business grow from strength to strength since opening Xtreme Beauty clinic and spa at Ormiston Town Centre in early 2021. She launched Xtreme Beauty in Botany Junction in 2015 and owns the busy Xtreme Beauty and Xtreme Barbers in Beachlands. Xtreme Beauty provides a range of services including waxing, threading, eyelash extensions, massages, facials, skin-tag removal and skin needling. Kesh encourages people to book in advance at this busy time of year. “It’s a busy and stressful time and we can help people who want to look their best for all their big occasions. “We take walk-ins but clients who don’t have time to wait can pre-book.”

Keshwin Nand, Director of Xtreme Beauty, winner of the Business Excellence in Retail Trade Award with Saravanaa Bhavan, Managing Director Shekar Man (sponsor of the award) and Leader of the Opposition and Former Prime Minister Chris Hipkins at the Fourteenth Annual Indian Newslink Business Awards held on November 27, 2023. Keshwin won the Best Businesswoman of the Year Award at the Indian Newslink Business Awards 2022.

Hedge heads for US, with his sharp eyes on IndyCar A

20-year-old from Beachlands is set to compete in the 2024 Indy NXT by Firestone Series, the feeder category to the IndyCar Championship. Callum Hedge has capped off a remarkable year, competing in and winning two different championships, on two continents in vastly different machines. Hedge was arguably one of New Zealand’s busiest drivers in 2023 with his racing resume looking like this: 50 races, winning a staggering 40 per cent of the races he entered, bringing his win tally to 20. Along the way he took 14 pole positions and a whopping 36 podiums. Hedge started his racing year early in 2023, finishing runner-up in the Castrol Toyota FR Oceania championship in New Zealand. From there he flew back and forth to the US, competing in the FR Americas Championship, which he won, dominating by securing 13 of 18

possible race wins. As well as that, he raced in the Paynter Dixon Porsche Carrera Cup Championship in Australia, which he clinched last month at the final event at Adelaide. Despite missing the Bathurst event in October, he still managed to win the championship with four wins and eight podiums. “This year has been busy to say the least. I think I’ve seen nearly every major airport in the US and Australia,” said Hedge. “I’m thrilled to win both in the US, and closer to home in Australia. It wasn’t easy, but we fought through and got the wins in both Championships. The results have certainly opened doors for the future.” For 2024, Hedge will compete in the IndyCar NXT by Firestone Series, the feeder category below the Verizon IndyCar Championship which fellow Kiwis Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin and Marcus Armstrong cur-

rently compete in. Dixon won the feeder series in 2000, using it as a stepping stone to the main IndyCar Series. Hedge tested his new Indy NXT car recently, and immediately impressed those looking on, and was promptly signed by the HMD Motorsports team, the same team who won the 2023 NXT Championship. “I have had a taste of the Indy NXT machinery and am ready for the challenge that 2024 will bring,” said Hedge.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to join a championship-winning programme in HMD Motorsports and for my partners who continue to make my motorsports dream a reality.” Hedge’s career in New Zealand is managed by respected former IndyCar team owner Steve Horne, and Mark Pilcher of M2 Competition, New Zealand’s leading single seater team. “I can’t over-emphasise what Callum has managed to achieve this year, it’s very difficult,” says Hedge’s manager Horne, of M2 Competition Management. Horne is more than qualified to comment, having guided the early careers of IndyCar stars Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves. The Brazilian racers both won the Indy 500 and championship titles. Pilcher is equally

as credentialled, having worked and developed some of the best young global racing talent, working with the likes of Lando Norris, Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll all of whom are currently driving in F1. Not to forget Kiwi Liam Lawson who is waiting in the wings for his full-time ride in F1. “We identified late last year that Callum was an extraordinary talent and, with the support of his partners, we put together this busy programme. Jumping from a Porsche Cup Car, to a wing and slicks single seater, week in, week out, is not easy. We can’t stress that enough,” said Horne. “Callum was often battling jet lag, but he got podiums or wins at nearly every event he went to throughout the year.” Next year will see Hedge based in the US just outside of Indianapolis. “I think it’s important to be based in the US for 2024, be close to the team and to learn as much as I can,” Hedge said. His first race of the season will be at St Petersburg, Florida, in March. The 14 round championship finishes in Nashville in September. Hedge’s 2023 and 2024 racing campaigns are being supported by the Tony Quinn Foundation, the Giltrap Group, and Tasman Motorsports Group.

the health of local streams and waters: Keep wash-off from building work or cleaning activities away from stormwater drains and streams. This can include cement, paint and fuel products and car wash detergents. Do not use herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers within 10 metres of a stream. They can be toxic to fish and wildlife and pose a threat to public health. Never dump animal, fish and plant waste into stormwater drains or streams. These types of waste can cause excessive algae growth and contribute to bacterial contamination harmful to stream life. Do not pour cooking fat down the kitchen drain or flush wet-wipes down the toilet. This can lead to blocked sewers, which can cause wastewater overflow into local beaches and waterway. The Tamaki Estuary Environmental Forum meets bimonthly to discuss environmental issues. Its meetings are open to the public and people keen to join the discussion can contact the forum online at https://www.facebook.com/ Tamakiforum. People who see a pollution event in progress can report it to Auckland Council’s hotline on 09 377 3107.

wo environmentallyminded east Auckland community leaders are encouraging the public to help protect precious local waterways. Tamaki Estuary Environmental Forum co-ordinator Nichola Painter and co-chair Bruce Kendall say they’re looking for creative ways to raise awareness about the health of local streams and how they can be protected. “We need locals to know the effects their behaviours have on local waterways, and how they can report pollution events they see occurring.” They say water pollution events can happen rapidly and be deadly to native fish and birds. Such an event could be short-lived but regular, such as an illegal connection from a washing machine to the stormwater network. “Or it could be a short, intense, random event such as someone washing their truck with detergent on the street, or washing paint brushes and pouring the water down the storm water drain. Pollution events can be hard to locate.” Painter and Kendall say only rain should go down stormwater drains, as they’re pathways to streams. “Roadside stormwater run-off is not treated, so anything that goes down the drain on your street will affect aquatic life such as eels and whitebait species, and eventually the ability to swim at our local beaches. “We need to constantly be mindful of maintaining a thriving, dynamic and healthy ecosystem that can continue to be loved and used by the community and which positively enhances and connects with the Manukau Harbour, the Waitemata Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf.” There are some simple ways people can help protect

Polo, picnics & ponies, cocktails & culinary tricks….these are a few of our favourite things this festive season. FARIDA MASTER, EDITOR

CHRISTMAS POLO PICNIC Adding a glamorous twist to the holiday season are six charming ladies of Clevedon at a picturesque picnic, as they connect, share a sense of community and get into the festive spirit.

or us at EastLife, Christmas always starts early as we plan the features a few months in advance. It’s that time of the year when we have more elaborate photosessions which involve a fair bit of organising and coordination to tie in with the spirit of the season. This year, Santa’s special helper

was Olivia Radford who helped us orchestrate a polo picnic with some of the movers and shakers of Clevedon. Things fell into place almost magically for the photoshoot with six amazing ladies -Lucy Ainsley, executive director NZ Polo Open, Indiana Bennetto, owner Auckland Polo Academy, Carla Van Tiel, owner Harries Boutique,

Amy Sorenson, manager Harries Boutique, designer/home stager Marika Jones, and Sarah Richardson of NZ Sotheby’s International Realty — who turned up at the magnificent Ryburn Park polo grounds. A picnic basket packed with fresh produce and an assortment of Clevedon products generously supplied by the Clevedon

Village Market set the stage for photoshoot. Even as the charming ladies soaked in the relaxed atmosphere at the meticulously groomed polo grounds, we had a special guest accompanied by Indiana, join in. It was Dixie the mare, a former racehorse now retained for polo. It was a perfect day out. The Clevedon girls made time to

unwind as they sipped on to organically grown Pink Ensemble Clevedon Rosé 2022. A delightful Provençal styled Rosé supplied by Marc Udy and his partner Camilla Jones for the special occasion. Celebrations are often a chance to connect with others, share a laugh, count our blessings and marvel at life’s precious moments. They did just that!

Having opened Harries Boutique, a fashion and homeware store in Clevedon Village six months ago, this fashionista knows a thing or two about style, on and off the polo field. “For us it is Christmas at home in a relaxed Kiwi style. We have fun around the pool and much as my mum would like me to have an elaborate Christmas meal, ours is a classic Christmas barbecue with a few drinks,” she laughs.

LUCY AINSLEY Lucy Ainsley, executive director NZ Polo Open who lives with her husband Kel, an international polo player and their three children at the Ainsley Polo, a family Polo farm, says that the best Christmas gift she has received to date was five years ago. “My husband gave me a wrapped-up puzzle of a horse. Although I like puzzles, I was slightly surprised that he had given me a children’s puzzle. But it was because he had bought me a young horse called Puzzle. When I looked out of the window, it was in the paddock (and she looks like the horse in the puzzle)! I had no idea he had bought her. She’s been the gift that keeps on giving every year. “She is my ‘me-time’ and I love her dearly!” says Lucy who once played Polo but soon realised she is so much better at organising things, which is why she is a natural at organising the NZ Polo Open featuring the best national and international polo players. And all she wants for Christmas is “a fun, sun filled summer with my family at polo!”

INDIANA BENNETTO Indiana Bennetto, an Australian Women’s Polo Captain, also a qualified coach and owner of

AMY SORENSON Carla Van Tiel and Amy Sorenson

Auckland Polo Academy spends her year oscillating between New Zealand and Australia. The acclaimed, competitive polo player says that Christmas Day begins with seeing the horses first. “It’s only after we’ve fed them carrots in the morning that we celebrate Christmas with the rest of the extended family.” Reflecting on the best Christmas present, she smiles saying, “It was a horse named Foxy that I was gifted by my dad when I was 14-years-old.”

MARIKA JONES Marika Jones says that Christmas is a time to be grateful and remember people who’ve had a tough time. The mother-of-three daughters says it was only five weeks ago that she couldn’t even speak! “I was operated for the second time on a brain tumour and the doctors had said that it would take very long to recover. But I was determined to heal.” On a trip to Bali with her friend, the home stager and designer learnt about meditation, spiritual

Amy Sorenson, manager at Harries Boutique, and motherof-two girls says she met Carla, thanks to their daughters studying at the same school. “Now they are buddies. We will be spending Christmas at Carla’s place,” she says. “At one time Christmas was about presents, but now as you grow older things change. I look at it differently. I look forward to some sunshine on Xmas Day,” she smiles.

SARAH RICHARDSON Sarah Richardson’s passion is both real estate and the equestrian community. Having

lived in the area, she gravitated towards specialising in equestrian lifestyle properties in Clevedon, Whitford and Karaka. A real estate agent with NZ Sotheby’s International Realty, the mother-of-one says that Christmas meal is always an elaborate affair with stuffed turkey, ham with all the trimmings, nibbles, roast potatoes, berry cheesecake, Clevedon strawberries and more. Sarah’s husband Alex is a polo player for Auckland Polo Club while she just started playing polo and has evented to top level nationally. What she looks forward to this year is her daughter discovering the magic of Christmas. “Now that Chloe has turned four, I am so excited that she is beginning to understand what Christmas is about. I’m so looking forward to celebrating it and seeing it through her eyes.”

HOW TO HOST A STRESS-FREE HOLIDAY PARTY

T

he holidays are a time of joy and celebration, but they can also be a time of stress. If you’re hosting a holiday gathering, you don’t want to be so busy running around that you forget to enjoy yourself. Here are five tips for stress-free holiday hosting.

PLAN AND CREATE A CHECKLIST

Start by creating a detailed checklist that includes everything from the guest list and menu to decorations and cleaning tasks. Begin early to allow ample time for preparation and to avoid a last-minute rush. Break down the tasks into smaller, manageable steps and set deadlines for each. Having a well-organised plan will help you stay on track and reduce the chances of forgetting anything important.

SIMPLIFY YOUR MENU

While you might be tempted to prepare an elaborate feast, remember that the holidays are more about spending time with loved ones than impressing extended family and friends

with an extravagant spread. Simplify your menu by choosing dishes that can be prepared in advance or that require minimal last-minute attention. Don’t hesitate to ask guests to bring a dish or dessert, making it a potluck-style event, which adds a fun and communal touch to the gathering.

SET UP A SELFSERVE BEVERAGE STATION

Set up a designated area with a variety of drinks, including water, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, glasses, ice buckets. Create a crowd-pleasing cocktail or punch that guests can help themselves to without constantly asking for refills. This frees up your time and allows you to focus on other aspects of hosting.

DELEGATE AND ASK FOR HELP You don’t have to do everything on your own. Enlist the help of family members and friends or hire temporary help, if needed. Delegate tasks such as setting the table, greeting guests, or hanging up coats. Letting others assist you eases your workload and gives them a chance to contribute and feel more involved in the holiday celebration.

CREATE A COSY AMBIANCE

A warm, inviting ambiance can work wonders in reducing stress during holiday hosting. Create a cosy atmosphere with festive lighting, candles, and seasonal decorations. Play music to set the mood. Arrange comfortable seating areas where guests can relax and socialise. A relaxed environment will make your guests feel at ease and contribute to the overall enjoyment of the event. Relax, have fun, and enjoy the holidays!

Hawkes Bay is one of our most loved coastlines renowned for its agriculture, fruit bowls and grapes. With more than 80 wineries the region is as diverse as its hills and flat plains broken by rivers and multi-faceted terrain. Best known for its merlot, syrah, cabernet blends and chardonnay, Hawkes Bay is our second-largest wine producing region. Amongst all the glamour estates is Church Road founded in 1897, it’s one of the oldest wineries in the country made famous by Tom McDonald who blazed a trail with his Bordeaux style wines in the mid-fifties. Since joining Church Road in late 90’s Chris Scott chief winemaker has taken over the mantle producing ultra-premium award-winning wines under a new label that proudly conveys the Church Road story. Visitors to Hawkes Bay should not pass up on their wine tours. Included is an underground wine museum housed in old concrete vats displaying some of the oldest winemaking relics. The cellar door and adjoining restaurant makes this a great place to relax. 1.

HOORAY! HOORAY! IT’S A HOLI-HOLIDAY Even as we all look forward to a well deserved break at the end of the year we have tips from True Vets on how to make this festive season even more enjoyable for our pets. > Although some pets love meeting strangers, most prefer the company they know. Make sure to give your pets a break from ‘a full house’ with quiet days in-between the festivities. > More time at home means more time for ‘walkies’, but don’t overdo it. Dogs that are not used to going for a walk every day can end up stiff and sore if they are suddenly required to go on a daily 5k run. > Beach outings are a favourite this time of year. If you have a canine companion, choose a dog-friendly beach, and take them along ... but do comply with the rules, to ensure it is enjoyable for everyone. > We tend to up the snacks ... for ourselves and our pets this time of year, which is not good for either! Be mindful of what you are feeding your pets over

the holidays, else your New Year’s resolutions might have to be expanded to include a diet plan for your pooch too! > Many holiday foods are toxic to pets. Keep all ‘human food’ out of reach, and don’t give your pets treats they’re not used to. > Have an emergency plan. If your pet is injured or poisoned, it’s important to have a plan in place. Find out which local vet clinics are available for emergency calls. Know the signs of poisoning and what to do if your pet ingests something toxic. > Enjoy this special time with your four-legged friends. Give them extra-long cuddles. They deserve it. They have been there for us throughout the year, with all its ups and downs, never judging, always supportive.

ROASTING QUICKIES Chef and cooking teacher for 28 years, chef Mel shares some tricks on how you could avoid dreaded mushy veggies and swap soggy, sweaty roast veggies for gorgeous golden roast veggies.

C

SALAD DAYS

Avoid over-indulging and bring some balance to your Christmas celebrations this year by including colourful fresh fruit and vegetables to brighten up – and lighten up – your festive dishes.

hef Mel who has just released Eat Yourself Sexy, a healthy cookbook aimed to get you in shape whilst eating delicious and beautiful meals has a question about your roasting skills? “Have you ever made a tray of roast vegetables in your oven and after 45 minutes, you open the oven door and all you have got is a face full of steam and regrets?” 5+ A Day Charitable Trust is encouraging Kiwis to keep their Christmas dishes simple by using fresh, in-season produce to help you feel good heading into the New Year. The trick is to find an equilibrium. Don’t deny yourself some treats over the festive season but just make sure to balance them with plenty of colourful fruit and vegetables.

TOMATO CAPRESE SALAD Serves: 4 | Preparation: 5 minutes | Cooking: none > 2 handfuls of cherry tomatoes, halved > 125g fresh baby mozzarella, halved

> 12 basil leaves, torn > 20ml good quality olive oil > Salt and pepper to taste

> Mix tomatoes and mozzarella on a white platter or in a bowl > Drizzle with the olive oil and season with salt and pepper > Scatter torn basil leaves over

the tomatoes > Serve with crusty bread and a fresh green salad > Note: It is important not to store tomatoes in the fridge.

get salt snow, and even covered seasoned veggies. > Cook at 220 C for 12-15 minutes until they brown and caramelize. If you turn your oven past the 180 C mark, you will not get a speeding fine. > Speed up further. If you pop your veg into the bottom or middle rack, for 10-12 minutes, whack the grill on and force heat onto the veg to caramelize them and cook faster.

SOME ROASTING HACKS: > Every vegetable has its own cooking time. Think about a carrot or sweet potato vs a zucchini. Zucchini has a quick cooking time. If you want to be lazy and throw it on the same tray, cut it into smaller pieces. Cut the zucchini big into half or large pieces. Cut the carrots or sweet potatoes into circles or squares in smaller pieces. > Don’t over season veg at the beginning. When I am seasoning with salt, I use flake salt and cracked black pepper. If you want to use table salt, put salt into a strainer and you will

FESTIVE SIPS CHRISTMAS MOJITO

Sir George Fistonich

SHAKEN OR STIRRED?

WINE TIME AGAIN FOR SIR GEORGE!

Cocktails are easily a party stealer. Whether you are having a backyard party, Christmas Day famjam, New Year’s Eve do, we’ve got quick and easy cocktail recipes for you to unwind and add some cheer to the season.

Legendary wine entrepreneur, Sir George Fistonich is still in the job of making wine despite the sale of his former time-honoured company, Villa Maria to Indevin in 2021.

W

orking with established winemakers and viticulturists, he has launched Čuvar Winery with the aim of preserving and nurturing the essence of New Zealand fine wine. With the name, Čuvar, (pronounced chu-var) translating to ‘guardian’ in Croatian, the brand pays homage to the Croatian wine and viticultural pioneers who helped shape New Zealand’s wine story. It features two wine collections, the Iris and the Guardians Collection. Visually Čuvar is represented by Croatia’s national flower, the Iris, Sir George says. “The heart of the Iris is depicted in our logo and reflects our commitment to circular principles – the guardianship of people, the planet and holistic prosperity.” “Our Guardians Collection is inspired

by traditional Croatian tattoos. Bespoke designs depict the ‘Kolo’, a Croatian village dance and are also inspired by New Zealand native plants, a nod to our commitment to collective kaitiakitanga.” The home of Čuvar Winery will be in Hawkes Bay beside the terraced vines Sir George himself planted three decades ago (formerly Esk Valley Winery). It sits under the company name, Fistonich Family Vineyards, which Sir George founded in 2021. While the site is not yet open to the public, it will include a winery restaurant with the view of featuring spacious, sundrenched patios overlooking terraced vines and the Pacific Ocean. Available to host weddings and corporate events Sir George says there are plans to build walking and cycle tracks around the site. Opening dates are expected to be forthcoming in 2024.
