CYCLE BRIDGE SCRAPPED By CHRIS HARROWELL

uture users of the Eastern Busway public transport project will benefit from the Government’s decision to scrap the proposed $785 million cycle bridge across the Waitemata Harbour. Transport Minister Michael Wood announced on October 2 the Northern Pathway, of which the cycle bridge was a part, will not go ahead. The Government has listened to feedback and decided to reallocate funding for the cycle bridge to other projects that reduce emissions and congestion, including the Eastern Busway, he says. “It [the cycle bridge] didn’t get the public support needed for a project of its scale and we acknowledge that. “Auckland will continue to see significant investment to support the economic recovery and get the city moving, which is why it’s our intention to use part of this funding to bring the Eastern Busway forward.” ➤ Turn to page 2

➤ From page 1 Auckland Transport (AT) revealed in June last year the Eastern Busway project was to be delayed by two years due to funding constraints. That news was met with much criticism, including from east Auckland residents, local MPs Simeon Brown and Christopher Luxon, and Howick ward councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young. The MPs say the move to cancel the cycle bridge and speed up the busway’s construction is an “overdue win for east Aucklanders, ratepayers and common sense”. “National has consistently called on the Government to scrap the cycle bridge and prioritise the Eastern Busway,” Luxon says. “It’s obvious the cycle bridge has only been dumped because the Government realised it was overwhelmingly hated by New Zealanders.” Brown says the decision should have happened months ago. “Because of Labour’s lack of pri-

Move to delay elections slammed By CHRIS HARROWELL

L

egislation that will give the Government the power to delay next year’s local body elections until 2023 is being met with howls of outrage from opponents of the move. East Auckland voters are set to cast ballots for representatives standing for the Auckland Council and Howick Local Board in October next year. But that may change because of the controversial Covid-19 Response (Management Measures) Legislation Bill, which was introduced to Parliament on September 28. The National Party is critical of the bill’s first reading being held under urgency and says the proposed law will give the Government the power to adjourn local body elections multiple times without constraint. Botany MP and National Party Local Government spokesman Christopher Luxon released a joint statement on the issue with the party’s Covid-19 response spokesman Chris Bishop. “This would be a major change and a threat to local decision-making, yet Labour are forcing the bill through a shortened select committee process which will allow almost no proper public consultation,” they say. “Granting this power under the

cloak of Covid-19 is egregious. “Local body elections are conducted by postal ballot, not by inperson voting. “The Government has ample time to prepare for the 2022 local elections and the existing ability to adjourn them if required due to an [Covid] alert level change.” Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart says she “strongly disagrees” with the move. “The local body elections are all postal votes so Covid shouldn’t be any excuse,” she told the Times. “Are they going to ask for an extension for the parliamentary elections? “This is wrong. I can’t see any reason why they would need this.”

Howick Local Board chairperson Adele White says it’s “unacceptable” elected members first heard of the proposed law change through the news media. “The Government’s urgency to pass this bill without warning or consultation is of huge concern.” However, Howick ward councillor Paul Young isn’t worried about the change and says continued voter decline in local government elections is a much bigger issue. Less than 40 per cent of supercity residents cast a ballot in the 2019 local body elections, he says. “The sad reality is most people wouldn’t even notice if local government elections were delayed. “The current system is failing

not only Aucklanders but the entire country.” Speaking in Parliament during the bill’s first reading debate, Covid19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said the Government passed two similar bills late last year. “They contained a wide range of measures designed to enable businesses, local government and others to more effectively manage the immediate impacts of the disruptions that were caused by Covid-19 lockdowns. “It is often the case, after a lockdown or after a period of restrictions such as the one we’re currently experiencing and have recently experienced, people are unable to comply with legislative

provisions that apply to them. “Things like deadlines for filing papers and so on. “There are a range of requirements that need certain things to be done in person that cannot be done in person in the current environment, while we’re dealing with Covid-19.” Speaking during the same debate, Green MP Julie Anne Genter said her party supported the bill. “It’s pretty obvious that if we were in a situation of a level three or level four lockdowns, we wouldn’t be able to have public meetings. “We wouldn’t be able to run a normal local body electoral campaign.”

Local Mums Become a FAB Driving Force Behind East Auckland When local Mums, Nicola and Rachel, started FAB Drivers just three years ago, they knew they wanted to serve their local community. What they didn’t expect what just how much they would fall in love with their business and the people. Their own families were the inspiration behind FAB Drivers, when they thought about helping drive their own parents and family members to appointments, they realised just how much of a need there was, not just for safe and reliable companion driving services but also support and assistance in people’s own homes too. A couple of summer BBQ’s later, FAB began! Nicola and Rachel both grew up in East Auckland and are now raising their own families in the area, and they love the community and area. Their services range from companion driving which helps

every member of the family get to where they need to go, whether appointments, shopping or even a school pick up, to FAB excursions which take groups of friends on pre-arranged day trips such a high tea, all the way to in-home assistance when you just need an extra pair of hands at home. When asked what they both love most about what they do, they both answer without hesitation, “Our clients!” Their love of their clients is evident, and they are inspired by the amazing, lovely people they are privileged to meet every week. “Everyone has a story, or many interesting stories that keep us chatting constantly,” says Nicola. Rachel adds, “We also know we’re making a positive difference in people’s lives, it’s very real and means a lot to us, especially when we get such amazing feedback and positive recommendations.” It is

clear they take a lot of pride in what they do. Celebrating three years in business this year, they are going from strength to strength, and thank their amazing clients who make their day and for their loyalty, particularly after lockdowns which have challenged small businesses. Having started with just one car, they now have two on the road and have another lovely friend coming on board to help, and they can’t wait to introduce Brenda to their clients. They are East Auckland focussed, living and loving local. They are committed to delivering a high-quality standard of service, and truly live by their FAB promise every day – “FAB – Friendly, Affordable and we’ll brighten your day!”. Small baking business booming in lockdown B

aking enthusiastic Mare Van der Berg’s idea for her small business struck following the birth of her second child. “I needed to do something,” Van der Berg says. “My husband and I started bouncing ideas around.” Van der Berg had been doing her bread recipes for around 20 years. The two recipes – gluten free keto mix and beer bread – were easy for her just to whip up and put on a table, she says. “I always used to get so many compliments about them,” Van der Berg says. That’s when they started to think about packaging them and selling them as pre-mix so that customers could purchase them and make them at home. In March, when she and her family were living in Bucklands Beach, Flour and Dough was established, making all kinds of baking pre-mixes for bread and a sweet treats range. Originally Van der Berg would visit various markets to sell her product. Then she started get-

The sudden boom of the business, as well as having two

young children at home, forced her to work in the evening and meant she would often be awake until two or three in the morning. “I had to get up at six because of the kids.” Van der Berg says that a lot more people became aware of Flour and Dough during the lockdown. “Two shops contacted me.” It returned to normal at level 3, she says. “I think because

a lot of businesses went back and people weren’t home being bored.” While Van der Berg’s business was considered essential and was able to ship, a lot of people within the market community could not as their products, whether it be candles or pottery, was non-essential. “The community was hit hard,” she says. “Their sales slowed down and many of them don’t have websites.”

There were three locations of interest in east Auckland cited on Saturday by the Ministry of Health. Two are in Pakuranga and one is in Ormiston. Cascade Superette Pakuranga at 123 Cascades Road, Pakuranga Heights is listed with regard to Wednesday September 29 between 12pm – 12:15pm as is GAS Cascades Rd Pakuranga Heights at 139 Cascades Road on Thursday September 30 from 12:45pm – 1:15pm and Pak’nSave Ormiston at 1 Bellingham Road on Sunday September 26 from 2:19pm – 2:30pm. The Ministry of Health says anyone in these locations on the dates and during these times should self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 14 days after they were exposed. If symptoms develop, they should get a test and stay at home until they get a negative test result and until 24 hours after symptoms resolve.

BUSINESS

Local businesses struggling with level three By NATHAN LIMM

E

ast Auckland operators are barely staying afloat in Covid-19 alert level three and owners are begging for help. A Howick bar owner says Covid19 alert level three has been anything but the welcome relief his business needs. Auckland’s drop in restrictions overnight on September 21 has allowed local operators to resume contactless service. But the owner of The Good Home has been unable to reopen his bar and restaurant as it is not set up for takeaways. Barry O’Shaughnessy says he has worked in Howick for 28 years and his business is barely surviving. “You pour your heart and soul into it and it’s tough to keep afloat at the moment. If I could afford to buy a beer, I’d be crying in it.” O’Shaughnessy says even if they could reopen, it would be futile. “It might help a little bit with cash flow but at the end of the month, there’s no money left.” Judith Eager, owner of the Shamrock Cottage Cafe, says the bounce-back in business since

the drop in alert levels has been muted. “This time around there’s a different atmosphere. When we moved into level three, we had a huge surge of people coming out and that felt great. But it petered out as the week went on.” A drop to ‘delta level two’ would allow businesses 50 socially-distanced customers on-site. But O’Shaunessy says he would

still be losing money if The Good Home reopened. Under alert levels three and four, the Government has provided a wage subsidy for businesses suffering at least a 40 per cent loss in revenue over 14 days due to Covid-19. But Eager says the maximum $565 she receives per employee is not enough to cover a 40-hour work week at minimum wage. “You’ve got to make it up to at

least 80 per cent, then holiday pay and ACC. I’m very grateful to receive it but it doesn’t meet the costs when you’re not getting any income.” O’Shaughnessy says he should be able to survive as long as the wage subsidy continues, but it cannot stop there. “We need to keep it happening in level two and even the first week or two in level one. We’ll never catch up but it would help to try and stay liquid.” Eager and O’Shaughnessy agree vaccination is the best way of getting businesses back on their feet. The Shamrock Cottage owner says reopening without a high immunisation rate is risky. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the Government will not make vaccination mandatory. But Eager says it is unfair for businesses to police the immunisation of their customers. “They have to come up with better solutions. If we do open and there aren’t enough people vaccinated, no one wants to be a superspreader location.” It comes as Auckland recorded 18 cases of Covid-19 in the community [24 in total with 6 in the

Waikato] with 29 cases yesterday [1 in the Waikato]. Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield says 33 had been isolating for their entire infectious period. The August community cluster has risen to 1230 total cases.

Loan Market Howick does it again

ADVERTORIAL

Loan Market Howick has again been named among the top 10 mortgage businesses in New Zealand for the fifth year running.

The Loan Market team in Howick, from left, Toni Macbeth, Viv Sullivan, Nick Kotze, Nicola Granville, Linda Shaw. Photo supplied or even talk to one on the phone. “People want to speak to someone they know, who understands their position, and who can give them a consistently high level of service. “In our office we’ve got four lending managers. All of them are ex-bank staff and they’ve got more than 70 years’ of mortgage-related experience combined. Our whole emphasis is trying to bring back that bank branch manager dynamic who used to know you and your family and knows what you’re looking for. “It’s not just interest rates, it’s not just products, it’s also service offer-

ing and it’s almost like private banking.” Like all businesses, Loan Market has had to adjust due to the Covid19 pandemic. It can continue providing its full range of services via digital communications if its team is unable to meet with clients face-to-face at its office in the heart of Howick village. Nick says Covid has also resulted in banks introducing different lending criteria as well as a changing appetite for lending, particularly from self-employed people. “Different banks have taken dif-

ferent positions and it’s very confusing for clients in terms of what banks are looking for. “When they come to us we can relatively quickly guide them through what banks are looking for under Covid conditions.” The Loan Market Howick team pride themselves on using their experience and expertise to guide firsthome buyers who need to obtain finance to buy their first property. “We love helping them through that process even though it can take many emails and we’re always happy to answer all of their questions.”

Because the business does very little marketing, it relies on positive word of mouth to obtain new clients, many of whom are referred by existing customers. “A high standard of customer service is something I’ve built the business on and it’s grown year on year,” Nick says. “It’s purely based on customers who say they’ve had an awesome experience with us and encourage others to come and see us as well.” Loan Market Howick has more than 70 five-star reviews on Google and it’s fair to say hundreds of clients have received a positive experience from Nick and his team. “We’re absolutely dedicated to doing what is in our clients’ best interest.” Loan Market Howick, 20 Moore St, Howick Phone 09 534 0240 nick.kotze@loanmarket.co.nz

It’s built a reputation based on outstanding customer service, years of expertise in the industry, and a commitment to seeing things from the client’s perspective. Experienced mortgage advisor Nick Kotze, who owns the Moore Street business, says it represents banks and non-bank lenders such as development funding and finance companies. He and his staff help clients obtain the finance they need to purchase property, whether they’re first-home buyers or experienced investors. “We have accreditation with all these respective lenders,” Nick explains. “So when someone approaches us to find them funding for a property we’ve got access to the widest range of lenders in the market and we can represent them objectively.” Nick and his team review all applicable loan offers available on the market to obtain the best interest rate for their clients. Their service is free to the client, who will get the best rate and cash contribution available. Something that makes Loan Market Howick stand out from the competition is the personal touch. As Nick explains, banks have been downsizing their staffing levels for years and it’s getting harder and harder to see a banker face-to-face,

n Saturday the Government announced that they will not be proceeding with their ill-conceived $785 million cycle bridge – and finally consigned it to the scrap heap where it belonged. The Government has announced that instead they will be re-prioritising the Eastern Busway – which the Government cut funding from earlier this year in order to fund the cycle bridge. This is a big win for east Aucklanders and taxpayers across New Zealand who spoke up in protest to the Government’s cycle bridge proposal from day one. Botany MP Christopher Luxon and myself have been consistently calling on the Government to scrap the cycle bridge and prioritise the Eastern Busway. The cycle bridge was at best going to serve 3000 people whilst the Eastern Busway will benefit tens of thousands of commuters across east Auckland through improved public transport options and eased congestion around the Pakuranga Plaza with the Reeves Road Flyover. Whilst it is good news that the cycle bridge has been canned, the challenge that we now have is that the Government spent talking about the cycle bridge for six months, which is time wasted on the next stage of the Eastern Busway from Pakuranga through to Botany. What we know about this Government is that they are very good at announcing things, but never any good at actually delivering them – 100,000 Kiwibuild homes over 10 years and light rail from the City to the Airport are both good examples

The challenge now, says MP Simeon Brown, is to ensure that the Eastern Busway, pictured, and Reeves Road Flyover are built in full and on time by 2025.

of this Government’s inability to actually deliver on what they announced. The challenge now is to ensure that the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover are built in full and on time by 2025. This was the timeframe that was set and funded by the last National Government back in 2017. In the four years since then we have had inaction and distraction by the Labour Government to the Eastern Busway meaning they have pushed the delivery date out to 2028 which is unacceptable. Now that they have finally committed to delivering the project, it is time they gave a firm commitment that the project will be built in full from Pakuranga to Botany and that it will be constructed in the same time frame as funded by the last National Government with a completion date in 2025. Christopher Luxon and l will be keeping the pressure on the Government’s delivery. We’ll strongly fight any further delays to the Eastern Busway, or any detours into exploring repeats of the cycle bridge or similarly pointless projects.

Entrust’s 2021 dividends has been distributed to 346,000 Aucklanders. The payments of $303 each went into back accounts on September 22. In total, $97 million is being paid to power consumers connected to Vector’s network in the Entrust district – mainly in central, south and east Auckland. It’s some good news during a turbulent time for Auckland household and businesses, Entrust says. This year’s Entrust payments have not been without challenges, including banks stopping the use of cheques, the Covid level 4 lockdown and limited ability to communicate with beneficiaries. Entrust chairman William Cairns says payment preference forms were sent to all Entrust beneficiaries in July as part of a proactive and ramped up dividend payment programme including social media. For those who chose payment by direct credit or by credit to their power

account, these payments are being made. “If we didn’t hear from you in July, or if you’ve moved or switched power company recently, you will be posted a dividend notification form which I urge you to complete and post or email back so we can put the money into your bank account. “The sooner we receive beneficiaries’ details, the sooner we can transfer the dividend to them. We’ve expanded our call centre to accommodate the extra likely contacts,” he said. Cairns says even so the Entrust dividend will be welcomed by Aucklanders who have faced a challenging year due to the impacts of Covid-19. “We will pay out a total of $97m to 346,000 families, flatmates, businesses and organisations this year,” he says. “It’s a boost to the economy and to households. It’s not been an easy year for our city and it’s great to be able to announce this dividend and see it distributed.”

Regain control of your business Has the current business climate got you feeling a little directionless in your business? Craig Nevatt, Director at Drumm Nevatt & Associates Limited (DNA), shares three tools to regain control of your business.

Annual Forecast Business forecasting is a vital component of planning and long-term strategy for any business. A financial snapshot of where your business is headed, a profit and loss forecast predicts the profit and losses over the coming financial year. You can use it to check your business is going in the right direction. Cash flow forecasts are best used proactively rather than reactively. Planning for upcoming expenses will help you prevent financial difficulties and keep your business in the black. Forecasting a balance sheet shows businesses what they’re likely to own and owe at a future date, which helps them plan for future acquisitions and make informed projections about their future capital, assets, debt and equity.

Ongoing Reporting with Accountability Business reports are valuable tools for any business. They provide a way to track your progress and identify areas for improvement. Reporting monthly against forecast, updating goals and actions quarterly, and doing a full review and update annually is critical to any business’s success. An annual business plan helps you get a broader vision of where your business aims to be by the end of the year. It maps out the primary goals for your business so you can achieve them in stages. First up is writing the vision statement. A vision statement is what you want to achieve. It should inspire employees and be exciting to the rest of the world. An annual plan will also need to contain high-level budget projections for the coming 12 months, forecasting income and expenses. The business plan needs to include relevant KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). Each KPI should tie a performance measure to a business outcome. A business plan is a great chance to identify ways you can exploit opportunities. Opportunities can be things like planning how to reach new markets etc. This is a great time to expose and fix any vulnerabilities you have in your business. Goals point a new business in the right direction and keeps an established company on the path to success. Cascade down the business goals into smaller goals relevant to

each department and then again to individual goals.

Doctors reveal local vaccination numbers

More than 2 million people have now received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, Minister for Covid19 Response, Chris Hipkins announced on Monday. “As of this morning, 2,018,305 people were fully vaccinated with two doses, representing 48 per cent of people aged 12 and over,” Hipkins said. “And more broadly, 3,328,286 people have had at least one dose – that’s 79 per cent of people aged 12 and over. “I want to thank everyone who’s stepped forward. Each and every person vaccinated increases our protection and reduces the need for lockdown measures – so it’s a huge thanks from me to everyone for playing their part.” He said the vaccination milestone was also testament to the great effort of New Zealand’s health workers. “These workers have stepped up across the country – and particularly at our testing centres and vaccination clinics in Auckland – and they’re continuing to deliver numbers we can all be proud of.” “With 5,346,591 doses administered so far, and 1,067,000 active bookings in the Book My Vaccine system, the response of New Zealanders means we’re on track to our goal of having all eligible people vaccinated by the end of the year.” In Auckland to date, a total of 1,950,883 vaccinations have been delivered – with more than 1.2 million first doses and almost 750,000 second doses. He said the vaccination programme continued to adapt with new and different approaches, such as drive through vaccination centres and more mobile and pop-up testing sites. “The best ongoing defence against the impact of Covid-19 will be for as many New Zealanders as possible to get vaccinated – the more people who’re vaccinated the harder it becomes for the virus to keep moving.” “Make your appointments now – every dose counts,” Hipkins said.

S

everal medical practices around east Auckland have revealed their vaccination rates across the different eligible age groups. Highland Park Medical reported to the Times that, across their practices, they’ve reached 99.7 per cent vaccinated (first dose) for their over 65s. As of September 28, their rate for the first dose of their total 12+ population is 93 per cent. “Our patient population represents the wonderful diversity of Auckland and the vaccination rate percentage represents the hard work and thousands of hours we have put in voluntarily to reach this number which has been immense,” says Dr Brett Hyland, general practitioner at Highland Park Medical. They were one of the first GP practice groups to be allowed to administer the Covid vaccine in May. Crawford Medical Centre, based in Howick, says that of their total patient population aged 12+, 87 per cent have had at least one dose, and 59 per cent are fully vaccinated. Of their 65+ patient population, 92 per cent have had one dose, and 88 per cent have had both. Their Maori patient population shows 85 per cent having their first dose and 52 per cent being fully vaccinated, which “we’re really pleased with as nationwide this has been a chal-

lenging group to get across the line,” Kate Donley, Crawford’s practice manager, says. Around 80 per cent of their 12-15-yearolds have had one dose, and 8 per cent are fully vaccinated. This low figure is due to the group starting much later so they aren’t eligible for their second yet, Donley says. “We’re definitely at the pointy end of the vaccine programme now. We did see a significant uptake in the 12-15 age group when they became eligible. “This was really encouraging as children are effective spreaders of Covid-19 but being vaccinated means they will

carry a lower viral load, getting less sick themselves and infecting less people.” East Care was one of the first Covid-19 vaccination clinics in Auckland, along with their clinics at Botany Junction and Ormiston Medical. “In fact, of the first 4 practices vaccinating in the Auckland region, 3 of them were ours,” Gordon Armstrong, chief executive of East Care Group, says. East Care has now vaccinated more than 8100 patients. “We effectively operate as an ‘overflow’ site for local GPs,” Armstrong says, “so we don’t have a percentage for enrolled patients as we don’t enrol. Weekend availability and appointments for vaccination have proven very popular with the public.” As for their clinics, Botany Junction and Ormiston Medical, 83.60 per cent of their 12+ eligible population (15, 266) have had one dose, and 60.20 per cent are fully vaccinated. Their 65+ age group has slightly higher numbers with 85.2 per cent having one dose and 75.5 per cent fully vaccinated. “We’re now finding that we need to actively encourage and support patients who are vaccine hesitant for lots of different reasons like needle phobia or anxiety,” Donley says, “ “We would recommend anyone who has concerns about the vaccine to go to their usual GP practice to be vaccinated as there’s already a high level of trust.”

Retiree village resident journey throughout Covid-19 lockdown

ADVERTORIAL

The arrival of lockdown meant all these activities and outdoor adventures have been halted, but Roy still maintains his active routine with his exercising programme in his room, which includes upper body stretching, weights and half-squats, a feat that comes natural to him as an avid sportsman and decathlon gold medallist. “I’m looking forward to trying out the gym when the levels drop,” Roy says. “I’m very active.” Roy suggests that those also in lockdown to get more exercise as it can simultaneously be a motivational and daily activity while maintaining fitness levels. He also spends his time watching sport on the television and engaging in phone calls with his friends and family, one being lifelong friend Les Mills. Occasionally Roy will also take his car for a five-minute-drive around the village, or stretch his legs in the streets and grass in

the 30 acres surrounding him and engaging in socially-distanced natural chats with other residents in the village’s safe and secure community. The staff has been working tirelessly throughout the lockdown, taking care of the residents and providing them with support. There are also weekly care calls that are made to check in on the residents. “The staff are great,” Roy says. Lockdown village meals are provided through food items and daily freshly cooked meals, as residents are unable to share dinner until restrictions lessen. He is looking forward to the village’s jam-packed October activity line-up when Level 2 arrives. “There’s lots of stuff organised for the future!” Roy says. This includes croquet, exercises, a knitting group, bingo, Tai Chi and a wide range of other activities. “It’s very nice here,” he says.

Roy Williams, 87, moved into Pakuranga Park Village not long before lockdown struck. A former sports journalist and 1966 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Roy’s family encouraged him to travel to the east Auckland retirement home for improved medical availability and support. “It’s a nice little apartment,” Roy says. Prior to lockdown, Roy and the other residents would enjoy having meals together; partake in a wide range of activities offered, and have access to the village’s facilities, such as their spa pool and gym. One of his favourite pastimes is going for a walk through the village’s outdoor bowling green. Roy was also lined up to speak about his life experiences with the other residents. “They (the staff) were encouraging me to do so.” The village is in close proximity to Lloyd Elsmore Park, beaches, churches, restaurants, and shopping centres, an advantage the residents make great use of, including Roy who enjoys shopping with his nephew.

12 — Times, Wednesday, October 6, 2021

William Green, all round outstanding Howick citizen As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary next year, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.

W

illiam Green Domain at the corner of Bucklands Beach Road and Pakuranga Road is named for a much-loved teacher at Pakuranga School. He was born in England in 1855 and died in 1937. William started as a saddler, but after marrying Emma Press in Manchester in 1882, they emigrated to New Zealand. On the sailing ship there were live sheep which he butchered but fresh meat was reserved for first-class passengers, not for steerage passengers. William had an English teaching certificate and taught at Flat Bush School before moving to teach at Pakuranga School in 1893. William and Emma moved into the headmaster’s house next to the school. This house was eventually moved to Pakuranga College. Behind the headmaster’s house there used to be stables for his horse and hay for their house-cow. All new students at Pakuranga School used to plant a tree behind the school, now part of Hutchinson’s Road Reserve. William taught the usual subjects as well as Latin, shorthand writ-

ing, horticulture, gardening and bee keeping using the school’s hives. In 1897 Robert Maclean of Bleak House Farm provided wagons to take all students to Auckland to see special displays on Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. Robert also provided wagons for the annual school picnics at Barn Bay [now called Half Moon Bay]. Governor Lord Ranfurly visited Pakuranga School in 1900 and planted an oak tree followed by Lord Plunkett in 1907 who planted

a pohutukawa which is still beside the St John’s Ambulance Station. Both Governors admired the large flower garden in front of the school and vegetable gardens behind the school, maintained by the students. William Green was respected by his students and admired for his knowledge. He used to open his beehive, extract honey without gloves, veil or a smoker but emphasised gentle handling and no one got stung. For school students it was excellent training.

Honouring and Celebrating Life

OUTSIDER

William had a productive orchard behind his home including espaliered apple trees. Boys sometimes caught eels in the creek behind the school which they buried in William’s flourishing rhubarb garden. Most students at Pakuranga School at that time would become farmers or farmer’s wives. William Green was a Justice of the Peace, a Church Warden and lay preacher at All Saints Anglican Church, even taking funeral services for special friends.

CLEARSPAN

He used to maintain the churchyard with other helpers. He was a foundation member of the Howick Horticultural Society with Miss Nixon and others. They planted the pohutukawa trees along Cockle Bay and Howick Beaches. He was elected to the Howick Town Board and was responsible for selecting the Colville quarry granite for the Stockade Hill Monument in 1919 after World War I. He organised the Anzac services between the World Wars which included repairing the post and wire boundary fences and scything a pathway up to the monument. When he retired in 1914, Emma and William lived in a large villa at the corner of Picton Street and Wellington Streets. William is buried in All Saints Churchyard and a lychgate in his memory was erected in Cook Street opposite the Monterey Apartments, as an outstanding Howick citizen. ENVIRONMENT

Champion of biodiversity By ZOE GARDEN

F

ormer Howick College student Ethan McCormick has continued his journey to becoming a champion for biodiversity. McCormick said his interest in the environment started at an early age. “I can distinctly remember poring over a New Zealand bird book by Dave Gunson as a five-year-old and after that I was hooked,” he said. In 2018, McCormick started to really get involved in the environment. He began setting rat, possum, and stoat traps in a little block of bush near where he lived. “What you start to realise very quickly is how deeply interconnected everything is.” He started to move into other areas like pest plant removal and native tree planting. McCormick became the student trustee for the Envirogroup at Howick College and the ringleader of Mangemangeroa’s band of amateur pest exterminators, establishing the Howick College Trapping Programme. He was a finalist in the 2020 New Zealand Biosecurity Awards. Additionally, he competed in the 2020 Eureka Awards national finals and won a Department of Conversation Scholarship

Ethan McCormick, left, currently works as a conservation assistant at Pest Free Howick.

with his project Catching the Kauri Killer, a proposed new rapid test for Kauri Dieback. He was one of 70 students to attend the 2020 Blake Inspire programme. “What hit me pretty early on was the sheer scale of destruction that has occurred here. A huge number of species went extinct – many of which aren’t widely known.” McCormick now works parttime at Pest Free Howick as a Conservation Assistant. “I love how much it revolves around community and engaging with people,” he says. “I have particularly enjoyed visiting

local schools and talking with their students.” He studies Envrionmental Science, Politics and History at the University of Auckland. McCormick is piloting a pest free cadetship programme for Pest Free Howick at Somerville Intermediate, as “what I’ve come to realise is that inspiring others is key.” “A big focus has been allowing students to appreciate the environment,” he said. “If they see the big picture, they will ultimately be inspired to start with restoration in their own back yard.”

Photo supplied

This has included a range of activities like bird surveys, plant identification and a guided night walk of the Mangemangeroa Reserve where they have spotted glow-worms. “The second focus has been giving them practical skills to tackle pests, which they can then pass on to others.” One goal that has stood out to McCormick, in relation to the future, is Predator Free 2050. “The scale of this plan is phenomenal,” he says. “It’s audacious ambitions like these that make you realise what’s possible.”

BIOSECURITY AWARDS FINALISTS NAMED

The 2021 Biosecurity Awards finalists named on Friday show the huge effort under way to protect New Zealand from pests and diseases. Local groups feature among the finalists. The 24 finalists named out of a record number of 90 entries include an iwi partnering with local and central government to eradicate wilding pines from their local taonga, Ruawāhia/Mount Tarawera, and a school on Stewart Island/Rakiura whose efforts are keeping Ulva Island pest free. Acting Deputy Director-General Biosecurity New Zealand Steve Gilbert says the Biosecurity Awards celebrate the outstanding contributions that so many New Zealanders make to safeguard our biosecurity system.Award winners will be announced at a dinner in Wellington in February 2022.

COVID-19

PM explains path out of level 3 COLLINS: TIME HAS RUN OUT ON GOVERNMENT’S INCOHERENT COVID STRATEGY

P

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern has set out a roadmap for Auckland to move out of current Covid-19 restrictions. Alert Level 3 and 4 restrictions in Auckland have helped control the Delta outbreak over the past seven weeks while New Zealanders ramped up their vaccination rates, the PM told the nation on Monday. “Today, based on public health advice, Cabinet confirmed its plan to transition Auckland out of current restrictions carefully and methodically, with regular checkins to ensure we’re continuing to actively control the virus,” Ardern said.

STEP 1

“From 11:59pm Tuesday, Auckland will remain in Alert Level 3 but several key changes will occur. People will be able to connect with loved ones OUTDOORS with no more than two households at a time, up to a maximum of 10 people; early childhood education will return for all; and people can move around Auckland for recreation such as beach visits and hunting.

STEP 2 [date unspecified]

“At step two retail will open their doors, with the usual measures of wearing facemasks and keeping up physical distancing; public facilities such as pools and zoos will open; and the number of people who can meet OUTDOORS will increase to 25.

STEP 3 [date unspecified]

“Step three will bring back those higher risk settings. “Hospitality will open – seated, separated and with a limit of 50; close contact businesses like hairdressers will also open with mask use and physical distancing; and gatherings will also then extend to 50. “Cabinet will review each step weekly to ensure it’s safe to move before confirming the next step. The wage subsidy will continue to be available. “Public health advice also sets out that schools at this stage will be able to return after school holidays on the 18th of October with the final decision to be made on that closer to the time. “In total, this phasing amounts to a careful and methodical transition plan for Auckland. At the end of these steps, we will then move to a national framework that reflects a more highly vaccinated population, allowing us the ability to deal with riskier settings such

as large-scale events with the use of vaccine certificates.” Cabinet also agreed the rest of New Zealand will remain at Alert Level 2 to continue to support Auckland to do the heavy lifting, she said, but the 100 limit cap on hospitality venues is removed. The requirement for customers to be seated and separated with physical distancing remains in place. “Today we hit the milestone of 2 million New Zealanders vaccinated. It follows the doubling of Auckland vaccination rates over the past 7 weeks, with 84 per cent of Aucklanders having had one dose, and 52 per cent now fully vaccinated. But there is more work to do. “Vaccines were always going to change the way we manage Covid19 into the future, but our strategy has worked and will remain – we want to control the virus, avoid cases and hospitalisations, enjoy our freedoms, and reconnect with the world.”

The Government’s incoherent and timid approach to the Covid pandemic shows it lacks the courage required to make tough decisions for the benefit of New Zealand, says Leader of the Opposition Judith Collins. “Today’s announcement confirms what most New Zealanders – especially Aucklanders – have come to learn only too well over the past seven weeks of lockdown: The Government is completely out of ideas. “Elimination has failed but, while the Prime Minister says we’ve now moved to a ‘transition’ stage, the strategy is fundamentally unchanged. “The Prime Minister’s supposed roadmap to recovery is nothing more than a vague wish list she tinkers with as dictated by the situation she reacts to. Where is the vision? “The fact is that Jacinda Ardern has no answers to problems that she and her Government promised us were under control. The situation is now, very clearly, out of control and worsening every day. “As a result of their incompetence and their incoherent supposed ‘strategy’, New Zealand is stuck in a lockdown limbo with no answers and no way out. “Enough is enough. Time has run out. The PM must admit she and

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has today explained what Alert Level 3-lite looks like. Photo Hagen Hopkins

her Government have failed. Own up to your mistakes. Change direction. Be bold. There are choices. “We will help in any way we can. Indeed, our ‘Opening Up’ plan, if immediately adopted, could see an end to lockdowns and Kiwis able to travel again by Christmas. “The country deserves answers and a clear way past Covid. We have provided this to you. Take it onboard. New Zealand needs it more than ever.” Meanhile, ACT Leader David Seymour says there’s been “no contrition, no certainty and no end-game”. “To summarise the Prime Minister’s “road map” Auckland will go to Level 2 gradually at an unspecified timeframe. And there will be picnics. “Jacinda Arden should admit she was wrong, give us a proper plan and let Aucklanders know when the finish line is in sight.”

COMMENT

Substance over spin: Busway project back on track On Saturday, the Government announced it would redistribute money from the Northern Pathway towards the Eastern Busway. This is a huge win for our community after Auckland Transport delayed the project earlier this year. However, it’s also an example of how MP’s can help (or hinder) their community. While others opted for politicking and spin, trying to blame the Government for an Auckland Transport decision it had no control over. While that was happening, there was other work going on behind the scene. Often the most effective advocacy is quiet work that happens in the corridors of Parliament rather than through press releases. In my discussions with Transport Minister Michael Wood, I highlighted how crucial this project is to our community. It can take hours for us to get to work, school or university each day because of the historic under-investment in our community. We are heavily reliant on our cars because of lacklustre public transport. The Eastern Busway changes

Labour List MP

that. It’ll not only reduce congestion on some of the busiest roads in east Auckland, but also limits our emissions and help fight climate change. By offering constructive suggestions and working with officials, we’ve been able to get this project back on track in spite of the background noise. The Eastern Busway is not the only area where the Government is making substantial progress. By the time of publishing, we’ll have had an announcement about Auckland’s alert level settings for the next few weeks. I understand the frustration we are feeling about the restric-

tions, but we’ve stamped out Covid before and, by sticking to the rules, we can do it again. Helping that effort, more than 5 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have now been given, and 83 per cent of Aucklanders have had one or both shots. But at this point in the vaccine rollout, there’s one important thing I want to add. Even if you’re already vaccinated, you still have a role to play. Talk to your friends and family who are still on the fence and encourage them to get vaccinated. Answer their questions, talk about your own experience getting vaccinated and help them find more information or assist them with booking. Some will label it spin, but it’s actually pretty simple. Getting vaccinated saves lives.

Edgewater Takeaways has new set of owners By ZOE GARDEN

C

ommunity hotspot and much-loved family business Edgewater Takeaways is getting new owners. George (Goran) Lucič, a well-known icon in Pakuranga, ran the store with his wife Glenda for 43 years. He was famous for his friendly demeanour, beautiful food and love of bestowing his customers with nicknames. He died on August 14. Fiona Lucič-Clarke, George’s eldest daughter, announced on social media on October 1 that the store, which is “smack dab in the heart of the Edgewater block of shops”, has sold. Customers and friends left an array of supportive comments and well-wishes, many re-telling memories of George and the shop, highlighting the effect he had on the local community. “For myself, my mum, my younger sister and our families, it’s been an emotional day,” Lucič -Clarke wrote. “But the time is right for the shop to reopen with a new family at the helm.” Craig Clarke, Fiona’s husband, told the Times that the person who will be taking over the shop is local and a previous customer of George’s. “He knew him well,” Clarke says, “and while he’s looking to put his own mark on the place, he’s also keen to carry on Goran’s values and traditional fish and chips.” The family, Clarke says, is excited that the shop is reopening. “We wish the new owners all the best for the future and look forward to being customers. The locals are in good hands,” says Clarke.

POLITICS

Calling all budding politicians Young east Aucklanders with political aspirations are invited to apply to become their electorate’s next Youth Member of Parliament. By CHRIS HARROWELL

A

two-day Youth Parliament is held every three years in Wellington and gives young Kiwis the chance to learn about New Zealand’s democracy and debate and discuss important legislation. The next Youth Parliament is being staged in the capital over July 19-20 next year with the Youth MPs’ full term running from March 1 to August 31. Among the parliamentarians looking for a Youth MP to represent their local electorate are Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Botany MP Christopher Luxon. Candidates must be aged 16-18 years on November 12 this year. Brown says he’s seeking a “capable and confident” individual who lives in the Pakuranga electorate to fill the role. It’s an exciting opportunity for young people across New Zealand to come together and share their passion and ideas for the country, he says.

“Being our community’s Youth MP is a prestigious and demanding role with the successful applicant asked to seek out the views of their peers in the six months leading up to Youth Parliament to ensure they’re truly representative of their community. “Nominees should first and foremost be engaged with the issues facing New Zealand today, particularly the challenges faced by the next generation of Kiwis. “Ideally they will have a strong record of leadership and service within our community and feel confident in their ability to express their views and those held by the young people they aim to represent.” Brown says applicants should be able to commit to attending the Youth Parliament and fulfilling the full Youth MP term. Luxon says he wants to find a driven and community-minded young person to fill the role. “I’m looking for an outstanding Youth MP to represent Botany and

use their voice to make a difference in our community,” he says. “Youth Parliament gives young people across New Zealand the chance to learn about and participate in the parliamentary process. “As a first-term MP myself, there’s plenty I’m still learning about Parliament and the successful candidate will get to have the same experience of seeing how our House of Representatives works first-hand. “The Botany Youth MP will get to build their leadership skills and give a voice to young people in our electorate and the issues they care deeply about.” Botany’s next Youth MP must live or attend school in the electorate. Candidates can apply by sending Luxon a short video explaining why they believe they’d make a “great” Youth MP. Email links to application videos and any questions about the selection process to botany@parliament.govt.nz.
