A trial date was set down to start on March 7 next year and is expected to take four weeks. cumstances of Mr Arapo’s death have progressed and following a post mortem examination, it has now led police to treat the matter as suspicious. “A team of investigators has now been assembled to work on the enquiry.” Bolton called for people with information on the fire to contact police. Less than one month later, on December 8, he announced police had arrested two 32-yearold men and charged them with Arapo’s murder. trial date has been set in the case of two men charged with murder over a fatal house fire in east Auckland. Wiremu Arapo, 27, died following the blaze at his Cockle Bay home on October 20 last year. Emergency services were called to the two-storey property in Minerva Terrace just before 7pm. Two other people injured in the incident were taken to Middlemore Hospital by St John Ambulance paramedics. Counties Manukau East Police initially announced that after liaising with NZ Fire and Emergency investigators, they were not treating the fire as suspicious and would refer it to the coroner to examine. However, on November 19 last year, acting detective senior sergeant Craig Bolton said a homicide investigation was under way into the fire. “As is standard procedure, police began making enquiries into the death on behalf of the coroner,” he said. “As our enquiries into the cir-
is on fire?’ “We opened up the front door and looked across and could see flames and the smoke drifting out across [the property].” Rowse phoned 111 while his wife and son ran up their driveway to see what was happening next door. He then heard fire appliances arriving at the scene. “I could see [at the neighbouring property] a fella running around. He just had shorts on and was running up the back steps and he was yelling. “Then I heard my wife say, ‘Get out of the house, get out of the house’, and I then heard him say there’s someone inside. She said, ‘Get out!’ “My wife said he was apparently trying to get a blanket over his head to go back into the house. By that time I had got off the phone and came back down to put some shoes on in case I had to hop the fence and go and lend a hand. “I saw another guy who was fully clothed. He ran around the side of the house and was looking pretty panicked. “Then the fire service arrived and started getting into their work and putting the fire out.”

HEALTHCARE
‘Medical services critical’ ➤ From page 1 “We met with them before Christmas and Christopher Luxon went and presented that petition.” Apa delivered a presentation for the audience that explained how the DHB provides medical services in its area, how the community uses those services and the organisation’s plans for future health care provision. “The Government sets for DHBs expectations of where and how much service we provide,” she said. “Sometimes we get a bit of wiggle room to look at what we can tailor for our community because sometimes it doesn’t fit. “This is the expectation the Government has set for us. We must be able to provide afterhours care within 60 minutes of travel time. It’s written in national contracts and it’s how funding is set, particularly for community services. “For our district we’ve added an extra expectation. “We actually want people to be able to access that care within their locality, so much closer to where they live.” Apa said the DHB has not funded East Care’s overnight service since July 2018, but the Healthline medical phone service is available to everyone 24 hours a day, seven days a week. She said it’s staffed by “clinical people who have very good proto-

cols and pathways”. “Also available ... 24/7 [people can phone] 111 for emergencies and, of course, the emergency department at hospitals are available and open 24 hours, seven days a week.” Audience members asked numerous questions throughout the meeting, including about access to glaucoma treatment in the area, and why east Auckland doesn’t have its own hospital given its population is of a similar size to Dunedin’s. People also asked whether the local community would continue to lose medical services in the coming years and why it can take so long to be seen at Middlemore Hospital’s emergency department.
Luxon said he had looked at monthly data from the past five years. He said people who present to Middlemore Hospital’s emergency department between 11pm and 7am can experience an average waiting time of up to 165 minutes. “So this notion that we’ve got lots of capacity between 11pm-7am is not reported in the numbers,” he said. “The second thing is it’s all great about Healthline, but at times you can be on the calls waiting for a long response before someone picks up the phone from Healthline. “Everyone talks about how great it is but if you’re waiting a long time, during the Covid crisis peo-
ple were waiting up to three, five, seven hours, so that’s not what you want in an emergency situation. “I get all the ‘stuff’, but the reality is for $300,000 to $500,000, why don’t you just fund the [overnight] service and put it back in place?” His question was addressed by Dr Vanessa Thornton, clinical director of Middlemore Hospital’s emergency department (ED), who was among the medical staff at the meeting. She said patients at the hospital’s ED would always wait “for some time period” unless they were classed as category one or two. “We see a lot of category one and two. They are high-acuity [severity]. So we will see you, if you come
in with a significant or life-threatening condition, very quickly. “That is what emergency departments are for. Otherwise you will be seen by a nurse within 20 minutes and you will have your treatment started. “You may not be seen by a doctor, and this is a measure made by the Government, and we stick purely to this, other DHBs don’t, for 167 minutes. “But if that nurse thinks you are more urgent when she sees you, you will be categorised ahead of the other triage patients. “So it is a system of putting people in a line of urgency and acuity.” Gosche said a review would soon be held into where and how the DHB spends the Government funding it receives. “The review is about to kick in on whether we alter what we’re doing. We’re at the three-year mark and we’re going to have an independent outfit come in and review it. “Then we will consider what we do with the pool of money and where it’s placed.” He encouraged the audience to put together a group of residents to engage with the DHB on “what are the [medical] services, where they should be, and what should they look like” in the local community. “If we can work through that together rather than leave it to us to do that all on our own, that is much better in our experience.”

Looking forward to DHB review East Care overnight service key to reducing demand on Middlemore Emergency Department
L
ast week Christopher Luxon and I hosted a wellattended public meeting on health in east Auckland which served as an opportunity for the community to express how important their local healthcare system is to them. This was spurred by last year’s closure of the overnight service at East Care following the loss of funding from the Counties Manukau District Health Board (DHB) in 2018. We launched a petition calling for the reinstatement of this service which attracted more than 10,000 signatures within a week and resulted in last week’s public meeting. Both the CEO and Chair of the Counties Manukau DHB fronted up to explain why the decision was made to discontinue funding overnight primary healthcare. ➤ The DHB’s reasoning for this decision essentially boils down to three factors: 1. A DHB deficit which they are trying to get under control. 2. A view that resources would be better targeted at after-
MP for Pakuranga
Simeon Brown hours services until 11pm, rather than an overnight option. 3. T hat Middlemore’s Emergency Department has the capacity to deal with any increased demand flowing from the closure of East Care’s overnight service. The key issue here is that people on the ground are getting a mixed message from the DHB. Just last Wednesday the DHB put out a media statement saying that for the previous 10 days, Counties Manukau Health has been dealing with significant pressure on acute services, with the Emergency Department (ED) seeing 187 patients on Tuesday night last week, compared to between 95 and 120 on a normal night. Urgent care and emergency care are not the same thing, with
the current policy settings putting all the medical needs of the Counties Manukau area into one place overnight. This works well if you have a real emergency, but not at all if you don’t. We heard several stories of local residents travelling all the way out to Middlemore and never getting seen because they weren’t considered an emergency case. This is where East Care thrived, seeing 20-30 patients each night who didn’t want to take up space in a hospital knowing others are in greater need, but wanted to see a doctor to make sure nothing was seriously wrong. The good news is the DHB has committed to an independent review of their current contractual arrangements regarding overnight care, which will be completed over the next three months. Christopher Luxon and I will be keeping a close eye on the result as well as ensuring the community is able to give their feedback to this important review.
COMMENT
We’re looking to the next generation Hello Times Readers! It’s great to be able to contribute regularly to this incredible local news outlet. I’m looking forward to some heated discussion and hard work over the coming months and years serving East Auckland. As a new Labour list MP based on Botany, there has been a lot to learn in the past five months. Even though I’ve managed to meet many people in our community at events, I really do appreciate it when people stop me in the streets just to say hi and introduce themselves. Even if it’s in the supermarket or at a café, I really value those small interactions with everyone. As an MP, the arts, student welfare and the community sector are three areas that I’m particularly interested in. Each of these areas have played an important role in my journey into Parliament and influence my values and outlook on the world. I’m planning to share a bit about each of these areas and how they’ve influenced me in my future columns. However, I know people want to hear more about the new housing package recently announced by the Government. This week, we announced the next steps in our plan to tackle the housing crisis and make it easier for Kiwis to buy their first home. The package includes lifting the income caps on the First Home Loan and First Home Grant programmes, a
Labour List MP
Naisi Chen new Housing Acceleration Fund to speed up construction and an extension to the Apprenticeships Boost payment which has already seen 21,000 new apprentices in the construction sector. Another step we’re taking to support first home buyers is by extending the bright-line test from five to 10 years. The bright-line test, introduced by National, is designed to make flipping properties less attractive. Under current bright-line settings, if you buy a house and sell it within five years, you’ll need to pay income tax on any profits you make from the sale. We’ve changed these settings so speculators will pay this tax if they sell off houses within 10 years. It’s important to note that the bright-line test does not apply to the main family home or inherited property. I know these changes will support thousands of people in east Auckland struggling to get onto the property ladder. In addition, it’ll also help the next generation – setting up our community for the future.

“We’ve checked out the space, it’s beautiful, and we’re super excited for that one,” Judd says. The Rvmes are completed by Miro Gibson on lead guitar, Brazilian Ronaldo Lima on fretless bass, and Logan Fox on drums. The beginning was very rock n’ roll - Judd met Fox at a poker game. Two-and-a-half years later, working hard in rehearsals from the start, they’ve built up a topclass roster of material, being consistent producers of songs representing their mantra: “Take every genre into consideration, basing the essence of our band on the interesting, worldly and diverse.” That encompassing style includes influences of “soul and blues, Motown and pop, right through to Middle Eastern, European-inspired melodies”. They also sound like a very tight, fresh, Indie pop-rock outfit, with a soulful Kiwi swagger. The Rvmes play at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick on Friday, April 16, with singer-songwriter Jazo, aka Jasmine Pene, opening the show.

Lawyers in the heart of Howick
A band generating excitement on a run up the Kiwi music charts is coming to Howick to show east Aucklanders what the deserved commotion is all about. The Rvmes (pronounced Rooms) are grabbing attention after the launch of their first fulllength 10-track album, Lifetime, in March, and it’s been steadily tracking alongside works by the big names in New Zealand music. The energetic Auckland fourpiece write catchy lyrics and licks and are pleased with the favourable reaction they’re getting, but it’s not going to their heads. “The response has been awesome,” says Edwin Judd, singer and rhythm guitarist for The Rvmes. “We’re feeling the love for the album. It’s mean. “Lifetime circles around the high and low points of life.” After a recent upper-North Island album-release tour, the Indie pop-rockers are bound for Howick to play what will be a lively, upbeat concert in the historic Uxbridge Theatre on Friday, April 16.

OPEN LETTER TO AUCKLAND COUNCIL I write to express my very strong objection to Council’s intention to sell the four public reserves located at 111R Golfland Drive, 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 76R Aberfeldy Avenue and 31 Aspiring Avenue / 17R Hilltop Road. The decision by Council’s Finance and Performance Committee to override the Howick Local Board’s vote to retain these reserves is reprehensible. It demonstrates just how out of touch this Committee is and their lack of insight into how important green spaces are for people’s mental health and wellbeing. The statement that these reserves are ‘surplus to council’s requirements and are not required for council’s current or future service’ reeks of total ignorance and zero consideration of the local community. These reserves are

not surplus to the residents of east Auckland and selling them off will have a significant impact. Residents should not have to continue to bear the brunt of council’s inefficiency in managing their funding. Asset Recycling should not be at a cost to residents, when the ‘asset’ in this case is four reserves which serve a very important purpose. Kim Parker
SELLING OUR PARKS A DISGRACE Auckland Council’s response to the public outcry against their attempts to sell off our parks is disgraceful. They’ve done the bare minimum to consult with the public and tried to make it as difficult as possible to respond. Our communities have come together to ensure their voices are heard and council responds by ask-
ing them to withdraw their submissions. Blaming a junior staffer is a pathetic attempt to dodge accountability. It’s time our Councillors and Mayor stopped pointing fingers and took some responsibility. They set the target of over $220 million in asset sales knowing full well that Panuku has a dubious track record with public consultation. Stop hiding behind CCOs and admit that selling parks and community centres won’t fix the underlying issues of financial mismanagement and poor performance. Damian Light, Northpark
BUS AND FERRY CONNECTION On Thursday March 25, I was looking forward to taking the 4:10pm ferry from Half Moon Bay to Auckland City for a 5pm meeting. According to the AT Mobile app, the 735 Bus would leave at 3:50pm from Stop 6267 at 111 Picton Street, Howick and would arrive at Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal Stop 1940 at 4:05pm. This would allow for a 2 minute walk to the Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal and a 3 minute wait until the ferry departure at 4:10pm. It seemed like a good option. However, on Thursday morning, I read Vicky Williamson’s letter “Go Bus No Go” to the editor, in the Times dated Tuesday March 23, and immediately realised that I could not rely on the bus/ferry connec-

tion. If the bus/ferry connection is unreliable, the prospect of being stranded at Half Moon Bay until the departure of the next bus at 4:59pm was intolerable. Consequently I changed my plans and made alternative plans to get into Auckland City. I had thought that the problems experienced some time ago of unreliable bus/ferry connections had been overcome – but apparently not. What a disappointment! I’ve now ruled out the future use of the bus/ferry option to get into Auckland City. If we are to be encouraged to use public transport, the public services should be committed to the needs of the public; not the whims of the provider. Anthony Zing, Howick ➤ Go Bus replies: (to Vicky Williamson’s letter) Go Bus apologises for the inconvenience caused. Unfortunately we won’t be able to provide a written reply to exactly what caused the bus lateness due to the tight deadlines of this newspaper. Late running is a very rare occurrence though. According to Auckland Transport official monthly statistics, Go Bus timetable reliability scores amongst the highest of all bus companies. We will certainly also be looking into why the customer’s complaints via our website weren’t immediately responded to. Abdul Alfaaz Operations Manager Auckland Urban- East & Central
Need a little Serenity?
The National Policy Statement (NPS) – Urban Development, which leads to urban intensification, is a key to addressing the housing crisis. While the NPS supports the supply of new dwellings unintentionally, it has – and is – driving up the price of existing homes across the Auckland isthmus. What we are seeing in established areas is traditional houses on suburban sections being competitively sold to developers at excessively increasing price bids. Bids justified by the developer’s commercial opportunity to build four or more dwellings on the section, under the Unitary Plan, where previously there was just one dwelling. Unsuccessful families seeking the original traditional family homes are excluded; while the vendors are gainfully surprised. Further, the impact of such price aberration sales has raised the price expectations amongst adjoining home-owners and suburbs. Tangible examples of this impact are the lower prices achieved on the few suburban properties ‘impaired’ with civil title covenants limiting development to single dwellings in Mixed Residential Zones. As well as decimating suburban natural habitats, the Auckland Unitary Plan is a significant contributor to unprecedented price increases across the suburban housing market. Deane Smart, Farm Cove

ast Auckland’s Lloyd Elsmore Park this coming Sunday (April 11) will host the very popular Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show, postponed from last month due to lockdown. This year – the 6th annual event – a big crowd is expected to support the work done by nearly 100 car clubs, organisations, businesses and sponsors together with about 2000 people involved in all the preparation. It has been organised by keen volunteers who are committed to the transport heritage of New Zealand and the fascinating hobby of classic cars. Major sponsors are Howick Local Board, Times Newspapers, Protecta Insurance and NZ Classic Driver magazine. Committee chairman Rev Dr Richard Waugh comments, “This year new features include the 60th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-Type and a ‘Goodwood’-type Revival area displaying 40 cars with
a racing and rallying pedigree and of special distinction. Race cars include Brabham BT22, Lotus 20, Mini Cooper, C-Type and D-Type Jaguar replicas and cars of distinction include Arnolt-Bristol, Fraser Nash and Porsche 356 A T2 Coupe. Maybe the highlight of all will be flypasts by the New Zealand Warbirds soon after midday. We are very fortunate to have an event of this national calibre here in our East Auckland community. Organisers are being especially vigilant about health and safety matters this year. The public is strongly encouraged to sign-in with the Covid-19 Tracer App or Tracer Register and to stay at home if ill. This year’s Brit & Euro Classic Car Show is expected to be the biggest yet with a record 1355 car and motorcycle registrations. It is believed to be the largest British & European themed classic car show in the Southern
Hemisphere. “For the community and by the community” is an oft-repeated byline of the event. Organisations helping include Howick Historical Village, Howick & Pakuranga Community Patrol, local Rotary Clubs, LifeGrowth Community Trust (East City Wesleyan Church), East FM, Bucklands Beach, Pakuranga and Howick Lions clubs, NZ Warbirds, Trinity Pakuranga Scouts, Ormiston & Te Puru Venturers, Pakuranga United Rugby Club and Pakuranga Girl Guides. There will be plenty of delicious food and varieties of drink available, British & European music played in a live broadcast by East FM, and the Howick Historical Village has a semi-live day with special entry concession. While the classic car show entry is free, the Howick Historical Village is the nominated charity by the organisers and donations can be made at each of the welcome/entrance points.
Right where you belong. Looking to retire to a place where you belong? While you are at the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show pop over the road to our Show Home at 6 Countess Lane. Set in 30 acres of gardens, these well appointed, stand-alone 2 bedroom villas are part of a secure, friendly neighbourhood with the facilities you would expect in such an established village. So if you are looking for a place to park your pride and joy, our standalone and duplex villas come with a lock-up garage!

The Magic Wanderers drive for kids
wo Beachlands women drove from Paihia to Invercargill to raise money for children in need. Shona Beckham and Angela Whiting, along with their support crew Warren and Brian Denholm, refer to themselves as “the Magic Wanderers”. Their vehicle for the Pork Pie Rally - a nod to 1981 New Zealand comedy film Goodbye Pork Pie – was a 1962 850 Mini. The name, Magic Wanderers, began with the gear stick. “It’s on the car floor,” Shona says. “It was referred to as the magic wand – for it was magic if you could get the correct gear.” Shona and Angela’s first cars were Minis. As a tribute, Shona’s husband Warren Denholm bought and restored the same model. More recently, their local sponsor, Avspecs Ltd, restored the Mini for the team. “It took over two years to restore,” Shona says. “We always planned to be a part of the Pork Pie Charity run”. The close friendship between The Magic

Wanderers spans more than 15 years. “Angela and I met through our kids at Lily’s Locker, the old day care,” Shona says, “She has four boys and I have two, so they grew up together.” The rally was an exciting endeavour to raise money for children’s charity KidsCan which aims to break the cycle of hardship for kids in poverty. They provide them with food, a warm jacket, solid shoes and feminine hygiene products through their schools and early childhood centre programmes. For KidsCan, they wish to give struggling families the same opportunity to learn as anyone else. “I’m a former teacher,” Shona says. “So I appreciate that the money goes to school chil-
dren in need.” On March 26, the Magic Wanderers set out from Paihia. “We had mechanical problems for the first two days,” Shona says. “After that, it ran like a dream.” At one point the mini ran out of gas. Fortunately, they were prepared and brought gas in a can. There were 50 other cars involved. “The management and accommodation was like a welloiled machine,” Shona says. In total, the rally raised was $300,000. The Magic Wanderers came in 6th with $9000 raised. The donations are still currently open. “Creations, one of our local sponsors, donated the proceedings from their cancelled charity run to our cause,” Shona says. “We are very grateful.”

SAFETY
Man calls for branch to be cut A What’s on By CHRIS HARROWELL
n east Auckland man has been battling for six months to have a large branch cut off a tree after he inadvertently smacked his head on it while walking along the footpath. Frank, who does not want his surname published, owns a property in Clovelly Road, Bucklands Beach. While walking outside the home one day in September last year, he hit his head on one of the tree’s branches, which is overhanging the footpath. Frank received a scrape to his head but did not require medical treatment. It was the second time he’s hit his head on the same branch. He contacted Auckland Council to report the incident as the tree is on the berm outside the property and therefore council-owned. “I said I’d like them to remove the tree or the branch,” Frank told the Times. “They sent a contractor and he said the tree is healthy and it’s protected, but it’s not protected. “That’s rubbish. I said ‘at least cut the branch’. “Again they sent this bloke and they’re now talking about their arborist people and they said the tree would die [if the branch was cut off].” Frank says a branch was cut off an identical tree across the road from his Clovelly Road property in

2008 and that tree is still alive and healthy. “I don’t mind trees but I don’t like them when they’re in the wrong place. I believe with this tree they should at least cut the branch, if not remove the whole tree because it’s [also] lifting up the footpath.” Council regional arborists and ecological manager David Stejskal says a site visit was conducted to the protected melaleuca tree on Clovelly Road when a request was made to remove the tree’s limb. “We noted there is enough room
on the footpath for people to pass the tree limb safely, including passing cyclists who should be riding at a reduced speed on the footpath. “However, temporary reflective tape has been placed on the limb to highlight the lower areas of the branch to help minimise the risk of people hitting the limb when passing by on the footpath. “Following a close inspection of the tree, our arborists established that removal of the tree limb would have a long-term detrimental effect on the form and health of the tree.” Stejskal says while health and safety remain the council’s “utmost priority”, it also has a duty to look after protected trees on council land. “Before considering removing the limb of this protected tree, we would need to explore other alternatives such as realigning the footpath to curve away from the limb. “This would mean we can retain the limb and the health of the tree as well as address the customer’s pedestrian concerns. “This has been proposed to the customer who declined for aesthetic reasons. However, our position remains unchanged.” Stejskal says the council was unable to find a record of the tree over the road having a branch removed. “It was likely removed before 2008 and our arborists therefore cannot confirm why the limb of this tree was removed.”

Local students become moth pod hunters By ZOE GARDEN

Howick competition is encouraging students to become moth plant crusaders – and win cash doing so. It is open to all students in the Howick Ward. In the past, one of the Macleans College students described the competition as “the best green jam ever”. “Collect moth pods and win amazing prizes,” Pest Free Howick writes. “Each pod counts as those with the most win!” Students, both individually or in teams, register and then venture into the community to collect moth pods from vines. Currently there are 11 schools involved and 23 teams registered. For the past three years it has been run by the Pest Free Howick Team. Last year the competition was halted due to Covid-19. There were more than 50 teams registered. Described as “pretty but deadly”, moth plants are an invasive pest plant which grown and smother native vegetation. Each pod has 250-1000 parachute-like seeds which can burst and spread. They can nestle themselves in canopies and cause them to collapse.
“Once you start noticing the moth plants,” Lorelle Stranaghan, the co-ordinater of Pest Free Howick says, “you will begin to see they’re everywhere”. A benefit to the competition is that it helps Stamp – Society Totally Against Moth Plant – control this unrelenting, vicious plant. This local organisation, run by Richard Henty, is continuously mapping and removing pods to prevent the spread of moth plants. “Richard is a teacher at Howick College,” Lorelle says. “We work quite closely with him”. Students are given kits that have tools to remove the plants. Most importantly, she says, students must be aware the moth plant is an irritant. “Remember to read the Health and Safety Guidelines, keep your feet on the ground, use tools to reach up high and wear gloves,” says Lorelle. “Be safe. Students must report sightings of vines to mothplantlocations@gmail.com. Additionally the Stamp location map has all known locations of moth pods.” Envirionment school clubs can join the competition, make a difference and grow their skills. “This year we’ve set up a leader-
ship programme,” Lorelle says. “It’s an opportunity for students to gain valuable leadership experience and feel valued by the community”. The $4000 prize pool is split into four categories: Preschool, Primary, Intermediate and Secondary. 1st place is $500, 2nd is $300 and 3rd $150. There are additional prizes too. Thickest vine is $100 and most small vines pulled by the roots are $100. If a student pulls at least 50 pods or small vines pulled by the roots, they are in the draw for a spot prize. Once their pods are collected, students must send a picture in as proof. “When you are finished with your pods,” Lorrelle says, “dispose of them at the Howick Local Board public weed disposal bins”. Or students can bag them up and dispose of them in the weekly landfill waste bins. Registrations close on April 9. Students can start collecting from the day they register. “When students register, they’re taking action in their commuity,” Lorelle says. “They help their natural environment and also have the opportunity to win some money!” ➤ The competition closes on May 9.
FUNDRAISER
Howick Kindy bike-athon a great success! The children of Howick Kindergarten were fortunate to experience a gorgeous sunny day for their annual Bike-A-Thon, held on Sunday 21st March. Many families from the Howick Kindergarten community came together on the grounds of local Owairoa
Primary School for the actionpacked event. Head Teacher, Leonie Kelly said “Children completed 10 laps of the course in their respective age groups. The event not only provided a wonderful opportunity for the children and families to spend time together outside of
kindergarten, but doubled as a fundraiser too.” The Kindergarten ran a bake sale, a sausage sizzle and sold ice-blocks for the children to cool off after their races. Families also sponsored their children for the event. These fundraising efforts assisted the Kindergarten in
raising an impressive $1116.10, which will go towards the purchasing of new sandpit resources, and plants for the garden. The Bike-A-Thon has been popular annual event for the kindergarten for several years now, and an event they hope to continue offering in the future.

HISTORY
World War II in Howick and how it impacted us
ANNIVERSARY
As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017
W
hen war was declared on Father’s Day September 1939, a group of enthusiastic Howick men of the Mounted Rifles Territorials with patriotic support of Great Britain were the first in Auckland to volunteer at the recruiting centre. More than 150 men and women from Howick served overseas in this awful war. Almost immediately, an emergency team prepared for a possible invasion with first-aid training of women’s groups and Howick schools. Everyone had to help. The Home Guard groups at Howick, Pakuranga and Bucklands Beach used all available manpower to establish five tank traps at Panmure Bridge, the end of Bell Road, the end of Cook Street and at Musick Point. They used large, long heavy logs that would slow down an invasion. Some had large trees partially cut ready to fall and block the road. Due to the narrow width of the tank traps, Howick carrier Dick Newton had to take his truck via Otahuhu to get to Auckland.
Howick District High School secondary students had weekly military drill and exercises. Photo taken c1945.
All men aged 16 to 66 years old were expected to join the Home Guard if not on essential services. Most homes had an air raid shelter nearby stocked with emergency foods. Barbed wire fences were erected across Cockle Bay, Howick and Mellons Bay Beaches supported by pine logs donated from the plantation at the end of Cook Street. Some young swimmers tore their togs and legs wriggling under the
sharp barbs. The army requisitioned several trucks and motorbikes upsetting owners. Most farmers used horses to pull loads and plough fields. Rubber was eventually unprocurable, so farmers had leather boots. Gun emplacements were urgently built in 1942 after the Japanese had attacked Australia. There was one at either end of Cockle Bay and Howick Beach and one at Mellons Bay. Another
was near the entrance of today’s Macleans College protecting Bucklands and Eastern Beaches as well as one at the northern end of Bucklands Beach. The Home Guard and school students dug defense trenches zigzagging beside the Tamaki River, the Mangemangeroa and Turanga Valleys. The Home Guard practiced and patrolled these. All streetlights were disconnected in Howick in 1942. It was illegal to park overnight on the side of the road. Car headlights were dipped on the left side and black tape put over the right side. Parking lights were covered and tail-lights had sevenwatt bulbs. If a streetlight was visible from the sea it was shrouded. Some put their cars up onto blocks of wood and used a bicycle instead as petrol was rationed and tyres needed repairing often. Rationing of tea, sugar, flour, butter, meat and clothing was enforced and you were encouraged to be a loyal customer of your grocer, baker or butcher.
Sugar sacks and flour bags were valued for many uses. Many students had singlets or undergarments made from flour bags. Senior school students were sent to help harvest potatoes at Pukekohe or haymaking at Howick. Some essential workers built fake Hudson bombers at Mangere to fool any invaders. In 1944 the Howick Town Board was actively fighting the Brown’s Island sewerage scheme that would pour partially treated sewage onto our beaches. All household wells were cleaned out ready for use if we were invaded and our reticulated water supply was damaged. Returning servicemen were given a discount to buy subdivision sections. Howick attracted many from Europe escaping to a more peaceful and safer part of the world. Howick celebrated the end of WWII even though rationing continued until the early 1950s. The Charman Trophy is competed for annually by junior teams in east Auckland in memory of local tennis personality Joy Charman who committed many years to tennis and tennis administration at local, regional and national level. “Joy was particularly passionate about junior tennis and wanted to create this tournament to promote

Junior teams from each of Bucklands Beach, Cockle Bay, Sunnyhills and Pakuranga Clubs play concurrently at each club over a full day of tennis. “Pakuranga were just edged into second place by eight points by Bucklands Beach, vowing to be back next year, third time lucky,” Tibbutt said. ➤ Pakuranga Tennis Club celebrates it’s Centennial next year. COMMUNITY
Service to celebrate diversity a great success A service held on Sunday to celebrate the differences of people living in such a diverse community as east Auckland was a great success. For the service, the auditorium of St Columba Presbyterian Church in Botany – the largest auditorium in the area – was filled to capacity. There were St Columba churchgoers from both the 8.30am and 10.30am Sunday services and worshippers from the Calvary Church (Korean), the Living Water
Christian Church (Chinese) and the Assembly of God (Samoan). All hold separate services in St Columba every Sunday. The aim of the combined multicultural service was to celebrate these cultures. Not only did they join together in prayer and song but each church was encouraged to come wearing clothes to represent their culture. After the service, everyone joined together in a shared lunch for which all brought

Rev Chris Barnard, senior minister at St Columba, said the combined multi-cultural service had been a suggestion by St Columba put to the remaining three churches. “When we suggested this to the other pastors they were overwhelmingly in favour,” he said. “One of our main vision priorities at St Columba is to celebrate our differences. Saint Kentigern dominate at NZSS A
fter the disappointment of the cancellation of the 2020 championships, Saint Kentigern College tennis teams were looking forward to competing this year at the NZSS Tennis Championships at Scarbro Tennis Centre in Auckland. Numbers were low this year and Saint Kentigern was the only school with a team in each division – girls, boys and mixed.
In perfect conditions all week the mixed team had some great games but it was a tough competition and placed 4th overall The girls team had a very close game with St Margaret’s College (Christchurch) drawing in games and sets. Going into their game against Queen Margaret College (Wellington), they needed an outright win to confirm the title. The girls were up 3-1 after the singles,
then played some gutsy doubles to win both and claim the title. The boys were title holders from 2018 and 2019 so were favourites and top seeds from the beginning. On the way to the title the boys beat teams from Westlake Boys High, Kings College and Christs College 6-0 and New Plymouth Boys 5-1 with the final match against Wellington College 5-1.

Fox wins, breaks course record at Gulf Harbour Open R
yan Fox has broken the course record at Gulf Harbour Country Club on his way to winning the inaugural The Clubroom Gulf Harbour Open at the weekend. Fox, from Beachlands, fired a final round of 10-under 62 to finish at 23-under par for the tournament to win by a whopping seven strokes over Josh Geary and local hero James Hydes, Golf NZ reported. After carding rounds of 67, 70, and 66, Fox started the final round a shot back of overnight leader Ben Campbell but quickly made his intentions clear with a birdie at the opening hole to tie Campbell’s lead. He took command of the tournament on the second hole with another birdie with Campbell making bogey, and Fox would never look back, Golf NZ said. He made pars at the third and fourth holes before making backto-back eagles at the fifth and sixth holes to separate himself and the rest of the field. He would par the remaining

holes on the front nine and made the turn at six-under and hold a sizeable lead. Fox began the back in similar fashion to the front making three birdies on the trot on the 10th, 11th, and 12th holes to get to nine-under for the day. He picked up another with a birdie at the 16th and needed to eagle the par 5 17th and birdie the
18th to shoot the magical number of 59. He could only manage par up the final two holes, but it was good enough to break the course record which was equaled by amateur Sam Jones in the second round. Fox says it was special to win on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour for the first time since 2014 and hit some great shots under some
pressure. “I felt like a score like this was coming. I played great in the first round with the exception of one hole and played great yesterday but felt as though I left a lot out there,” said Fox. “It was nice to get it going early and hit some great shots coming home. It’s a really nice feeling.” The European Tour professional
