n attempt to name three new public roads in east Auckland was delayed when questions were raised over the process taken to reach agreement. The Howick Local Board discussed name options at its monthly

business meeting in November for three public roads being built in Flat Bush. The roads are located in a subdivision being developed at 259-271 Murphys Road. She had a really strong social conscience and was very political.” McRae and Frankum were active in a group called the Peace Squadron which campaigned against nuclear testing and visits by nuclear-powered ships to New Zealand in the 1970s and 1980s. “She stood up for what she believed in with everything she did,” Bailey says. “Gair was like that with her students. She pushed everyone to be the best they could be. “She believed in every student. She believed everyone had talent and it was her job to bring that out of them.” Bailey, HCYT’s principal, says her mother supported all of her students, regardless of their perceived talent. “One of her ex-students said one of the really neat things about mum was she saw the potential in and gave opportunities to those who were not going to go on to grace the great stages. “She believed in social inclusivity and fairness.” Bailey says she and her mum were “extremely close” and shared a very close working relationship. “I was privileged to spend a mammoth amount of time with her. We worked together and I saw her just about every day for the last year. “We spoke on the phone at least five times a day on top of that. She was my best friend. “She always believed in me and

By CHRIS HARROWELL Police are continuing to make progress in the homicide investigation currently underway in Sunnyhills. “Formal identification procedures have now been completed and we have formally identified the victim as 55-year-old Ying Zhong, also known as Elizabeth,” said Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers, Counties Manukau CIB at a press conference on Friday. The scene examination at a property on Suzetta Place is still ongoing and police expect this will continue for some time, he said. Part of the police investigation is focusing on the night of Friday November 27 and the morning of Saturday November 28. The last confirmed sighting of Elizabeth was at 4.30pm on Friday before her body was located on Saturday. Police are appealing for sightings of Elizabeth’s black Land

air McRae’s legacy lives on in the thousands of young people she trained, encouraged, mentored and inspired. The well-known and widely respected figure of east Auckland’s arts community died in Middlemore Hospital on November 21 after suffering a stroke earlier that morning. She was 79. She is survived by her two children, four grandchildren and two brothers. McRae will be best known to many locals as the founder and long-time principal of the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre (HCYT) in Granger Road. Her work was recognised in 2017 when she was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for services to theatre and youth. McRae established the Huntly Children’s Theatre in the Waikato as a young primary school teacher in 1962. She later began teaching drama from her home in Howick and at the Howick Little Theatre Youth Group. She founded the Bucklands Beach Children’s Theatre in 1969 and then the Uxbridge Children’s and Youth Theatre, which later became HCYT in 1996. The Times talked to her brothers John McRae and Don McRae and her daughter Fiona Bailey about what she meant to them, the community and the thousands of young people she taught over the years. They say she was driven by a desire to bring out the best in her students and achieve their full potential. “She was a teacher since her early 20s and she was a very creative teacher, particularly around the arts,” John says. “Gair was always a creative person. She used to organise, write and direct plays in a shed in the neighbourhood when she was a child and all the local families were invited, probably compulsorily, to attend.” The children’s theatre group she founded in Huntly was very successful and toured the region, he says. “That was a forerunner of the work she did in and around Howick.” Don adds: “She was a bit of a visionary with her teaching. “She introduced methods and philosophies that later on became accepted nationally. “She never sought any glory from these things. “The reward she got was not in any acclaim from other people. It was in seeing others develop.” Before McRae moved to east Auckland, she travelled with her husband Dale Frankum to Canada, where she obtained a speech-teaching diploma at Toronto University. They later returned to New Zealand by sailboat. “She did her speech training over there and got the top marks in Canada,” Bailey says. “Gair was a courageous person.

my brother Miles.” One sign of McRae’s popularity with her pupils was the number of friends she had on social media. “She had thousands of Facebook friends and most of them are past pupils,” Bailey says. “Some of them who struggle a little bit in life used to ring mum up and talk to her. “What she created in this theatre group was a family and that’s one of the things really brought home afterward.” John says his sister was “physically small”, but she had an “enormously powerful presence and personality”. “She could draw people around her. She was my school teacher for two years as a kid and with the Huntly Children’s Theatre. “There were all these big productions and she was kind of a dynamo. “She drew not just kids but a lot of adults to that venture.” McRae continued teaching students at HCYT until last year and was still working for the theatre group she founded the day she died. “She had never retired,” Bailey says. “This year was a bit different because we couldn’t do the productions [due to Covid-19], but she was still costuming productions right up until the end. “She fought for this theatre group. It only survived and flourished because of her skill, determination and commitment to it.” More than 400 people attended McRae’s funeral at St Columba Church in Botany on November 28, with many more watching the service over the internet. A group of her former students formed a guard of honour as her casket was carried from the church. “The amount of messages we’ve had over the last week from past pupils is an absolute testament [to her impact],” Bailey says. “The number of lives she touched through HCYT is astounding. “She was just the most amazing woman and she was inspirational to everybody she came into contact with.”

MENTAL HEALTH

Clearhead aims to cut suicide numbers C

learhead, a Kiwi digital mental health company, has launched its expanded website offering designed to help people who are supporting others with their mental health to be better support people. With Christmas fastapproaching at the end of what’s been a challenging year for many, Clearhead - in partnership with TSB Bank is launching an extension to its digital mental wellbeing platform. Since their 2018 launch, Clearhead’s website and app has been offering a private virtual wellbeing assistant to help improve New Zealanders’ access to mental health support and empower all Kiwis to proactively maintain their wellbeing. Clearhead supports people in gaining self-awareness and vital insights surrounding their mental health by providing personalised recommendations through its artificial intelligence chatbot. However, up to 30 per cent of users who visit the website and app go there looking for help on how to sup-

port their loved ones, instead of themselves. That’s why, the intuitive chatbot support tool which has been built by New Zealand doctors, will also provide a service for Kiwis looking for guidance on how to support their family and friends who are having a tough time, Clearhead co-founder and CEO Dr Angela Lim says. Dr Lim - who went to school

at Howick College - says for Kiwis struggling with mental health challenges, having the right help from the people closest to you, makes a huge difference for managing your mental illness. “We all want to help the people we love, we often just don’t know how to do that, so from today Clearhead can be the one stop shop for New Zealanders to get the information and guidance they need to feel empowered and ready to help when a loved one is struggling. People who are struggling will be able to nominate a loved one to support them and together they can complete a suicide safety plan which reduces the burden of problemsolving when a crisis is looming and the ability to think clearly is impaired. “These plans are a reminder of cherished memories, simple pleasures that give comfort, and people who care and can be counted on to respond when needed,” says Dr Lim. She says the team has worked hard to launch this new Clearhead support person plat-

form as quickly as possible at a time when Kiwis are seeking out more support than normal due to the effects of Covid-19. “Since Covid-19 took hold in New Zealand in March, Clearhead has seen a six fold increase in usage,” Dr Lim says. “2020 has been a tough year for everyone, and when you add in the traditional festive season stresses, we’re expecting December and January to be a particularly busy period for Clearhead, so we’re thrilled we could get this new service up and running in time.” “We couldn’t have done that without the support of TSB who provided us with a $30,000 TSB Good Stuff grant in September which meant we had the funds to get this live far sooner than would have been possible otherwise. Clearhead is a social enterprise with a social mission to help as many people in New Zealand as possible to get the mental health support they need.” ➤ To see Clearhead’s support person page visit, https://www. clearhead.org.nz/supportingfriends-and-family

FASHION

Day inspired by uniforms of revolutionaries Emerging fashion talent Michael Day of Pakuranga has won the 2020 winner’s prize for Resene Colour of Fashion. Day (Ngati Kuri) heard the news as the Whitecliffe Fashion Show last week. Auckland designs appeared on the runway at the Auckland Town Hall, led by the winner. Day was presented with a prize gifted by Resene - a sewing machine, pair of engraved shears and fabric vouchers, with a total value of $1000. Reflecting on judging day, Day said: “I was full of good nerves. Nerves keep you pushing. I was looking forward to getting some feedback from the judges.” The young designer takes military-style elements like cargo pockets and silhouettes from clothes worn by revolutionaries into his designs, details that were evident in the fashion graduate’s winning design. Beyond black, purple is Day’s favourite colour. He was pleased to open his randomly selected brown paper bag to find silk fabric in Resene Belladonna when the project began in March. “Expect the name Michael Day to make an impact in streetwear design in the future after a head-start as winner of Resene Colour of Fashion with Whitecliffe Fashion Tech in 2020,” Karen Warman of Resene said.

EVENT

New roads are being built in Flat Bush and the Howick Local Board has the responsibility of naming them. Times photo Wayne Martin

New road names stir debate ➤ From page 1 The letter also expresses unhappiness with the process and says the iwi did try to engage, despite the board’s agenda for its November business meeting stating Ngai Tai ki Tamaki did not respond to a request for feedback. Maxwell-Butler writes that the names preferred by Ngai Tai ki Tamaki for the first road are Te Ara Tatai Whetu, Hoeroa Road, or Tuahangata Road. Its preferred options for the second road are Te Ara Pou Waho, Te Ara Pou Roto, or Te Ara Kaiwhitiki. Its preferred option for the third road is Henry Maxwell Way. The board discussed the issue at its business meeting on November 23. Board member Bob Wichman said: “Why don’t we call a truce here and have one Maori name and one European name? The Maori name suggested is quite sensible. When I say sensible I’m talking about pronunciation-wise. We’ve got to consider all the people in our locality. They are a mixture of ethnic groups from around the world and we want something that’s reasonably easy to pronounce. So why don’t we go with Pigeonwood

[Place] and Omihi [Way].” Board deputy chairman John Spiller said “strong consideration” should be given to the view of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki. He said he sympathised with Wichman’s opinion and “maybe we do need to have a blend here”. Board member David Collings said he was “a bit puzzled by the process”. He said he understood all iwi and mana whenua had been consulted on the proposed road names and had not provided feedback. “I thought we had quite a rigorous process around road naming. “There are a lot of requirements and I thought we were meeting all those requirements, including getting feedback from mana whenua. “In this case I thought they were one of the parties we send resource consent and a whole lot of things to and actually help process things on behalf of iwi. I thought that was done. We seem to be getting a letter saying they’re upset with the process.” Collings moved a motion, which was then passed, for the board to defer the item to its next business meeting.

Village of a 1000 rose bushes By FARIDA MASTER

rom the Pirate King to Sexy Rexy, Absolutely Fabulous and more, they all bloomed with pride, competing for attention. However, it was Tequila Sunrise that was voted the Prettiest Rose by Metlifecare Highlands residents, a retirement village tucked away at Highland Park. “The roses have been going nuts,” says village manager Brett Stuart, at a special event held at the Highlands on Friday evening for residents as the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestral group Viereingeit, put up a performance surrounded by colourful and scented rose bushes. “The rose shrubs have been flourishing and our head gardener Jacek Andreasik along with a team of three has been working hard to make it a village of 1000 rose bushes,” says Stuart. The villagers were asked to judge the best rose and the verdict was a flaming beauty, Tequila Sunrise. Possibly the largest rose garden in east Auckland, Andreasik says that while the Highlander have a variety of gardens including bon-

sai and a big herb garden, villagers love their old and new variety of roses. “We had 900 rose bushes at the last count but during lockdown when the residents were in their bubble, we decided to make the gardens even more beautiful with a 1000 roses,” he says.

While it had its challenges with delivery of rose plants during lockdown, the end result has been spectacular. Andreasik gives due credit to a resident at the village who has been involved with the New Zealand Rose Society and has helped him to get the best out of the masterpiece of nature.

Howick business wins fitness award I

t is not a secret that the fitness industry has a strong focus on younger, fit-looking people. Often the “not-so-fit” over-45s feel left out. For them, going to a traditional local gym is uncomfortable at best and intimidating at worst. The result? Deteriorating health in people who are most vulnerable and at risk. Think of someone who is in their 50s or 60s and wants to keep their body functional for many years to come and be around for their family longer. The sad reality is that no one caters for this demographic. These people have nowhere to go to get help. The Growing Younger Programme was started four years ago by Gavyn Berntsen and Alex Blazhevskyiy, two local health and fitness professionals to address this issue. Growing Younger last month won a prestigious Innovation Award at the New Zealand Exercise Industry Awards. They are currently based at the Howick RSA. With a focus on people over

45, they have developed an approach that helps these people lose many kilos of excess weight, get fit, get healthy and future-proof their bodies for many years to come. It is not uncommon for their members to lose 10 or 20kg of excess weight. One member, Penny, even managed to lose

45.5kg over 16 months. In their book “How to Feel & Look Younger Naturally: Your Ultimate Guide to Staying Functionally Fit After 50”, they explain why losing weight and getting healthier after 45 becomes more challenging but certainly not impossible. “Essentially over the last four

“There are no overly-exhaustive, army-style workouts involved,” he said. “Everything is doable for an average person.” ➤ The team at Growing Younger are giving away 15 copies of their book free to the first 15 Times readers to respond. years we have developed a fail-proof system that delivers results consistently as long as the person involved plays along of course,” Blazhevskyiy said. The guys at Growing Younger say that accountability is one of the things that makes them different. They have a way of tracking each member’s progress and adjust the programme accordingly if need be. With membership numbers rapidly rising over the last six months, the Growing Younger facility has become a go-to place for over 45s to get their health and fitness back on track around east Auckland. After being featured in an online publication, Alex says that they had inquiries from people as far as Christchurch and Tauranga asking if they have a facility around where they live. Blazhevskyiy said there are no short-cuts. “For most people it takes about six months to see a big change in their bodies,” he said. Berntsen emphasised the exercises are tailored for each person’s fitness level.

COMMUNITY

COMMENT

Coastguard smiling Howick Coastguard is a step closer to establishing a refuelling facility at its Howick Beach headquarters.

A

t a dinner meeting on November 24, Howick Coastguard’s past president Alan Martin and community liaison officer Chris Paul formally received a cheque for $6000 from Howick Rotary to help toward the cost of the facility. In addition, Colin Monk, Fun Walk and Run committee member, announced that the club had secured a further $3000 from the June Gray Charitable Trust to go toward the project. The two organisations have collaborated with other community bodies to run the annual Rotary Fun Walk and Run event from Stockade Hill. The event was established as a project that would raise funds for Coastguard and, over the years, the club has been able to provide more than $30,000 of funding to support operational costs with a particular focus on health and safety. Martin said, “This year the funds will go toward the establishment of a refuelling station being built behind the boat shed with an estimated overall cost of $45,000. “The $9000 is much appreciated and reinforces the close working relationship the two organisation have built up over many years. Currently we refuel at Pine

Harbour and having our own facility will save the volunteer crew a lot of time after a tiring shift on the boat.” The cheque was presented by Monk and Howick Rotary president Gavin Green. Monk said, “The Fun Walk and Run event is a broad-based community activity organised by a committee made up of five Rotarians, two members of Howick Coastguard and two members from the Howick community with John Osborne as its chair. “It is supported by the Howick

Local Board; prizes are donated by local businesses and local schools are keen participants, all reflecting its widespread appeal withing our community.” Green said, “Howick Rotary undertakes many activities involving the environment, helping young people and community assistance and this is one of the major projects the club has in its calendar. “It is great that one community service organisation like Rotary can assist another like Coastguard deliver a vital service to keep our coastal waterways safe.”

Challenges lay ahead

T

wo weeks ago it was very humbling to be officially sworn in as a Member of the 53rd New Zealand Parliament, representing the Pakuranga and Howick communities. This will be my second term in Parliament representing the Pakuranga Electorate and I am privileged to have been named as the new Opposition Spokesperson for Police and the Serious Fraud Office. I am delighted to also be able to continue in the Corrections and Youth Portfolios as well. Law and order is an area I am very passionate about and I have been very vocal about some of the challenges New Zealand faces in this area. The current Government over its first term demonstrated that it cares more about criminals than their victims, with policies that conflict with Kiwis’ longstanding view that if you do the crime, you do the time. The current Government has a goal of reducing the prison population by 30 per cent over the next 15 years with no corresponding goal of reducing crime. Increasing gun violence against our police is of particular concern. Our police are the best in the world at what they do but they need more support and they need a Government which puts victims at the heart of our criminal justice system, not criminals. National has always been the party of law and order and we will continue to take a hard line on crime.

MP for Pakuranga

Simeon Brown I am pleased to remain as the Spokesperson for Youth – young people in New Zealand are doing it tough right now as Covid-19 has up-ended their lives and impacted things like study, new jobs, and young families. Young Kiwis are worried about the future debt burden they will inherit as a result of the current economic crisis. As National’s youngest MP, it is important I bring that voice to the table as we chart the way forward. I know that my portfolio areas are very close of the hearts of many living in the Pakuranga and Howick communities. That is why I always welcome members of the community to share your opinions and concerns with me. You can visit my office located at 120A Pakuranga Road, or call and email us on 09 572 0000 or PakurangaMP@parliament.govt.nz. There is no doubt that National will continue to be a hardworking Opposition, on behalf of all New Zealanders, to hold this government to account over the next three years as New Zealand rebuilds following Covid-19. We need to ensure that no-one is left behind. ➤ Simeon Brown, Member of Parliament for Pakuranga

SNAUSAGE ROLLS PREP 30 minutes, plus 20 minutes to chill COOK 45 minutes SERVES 4 as a meal, 8 as a snack FILLING • ⅓ cup each brown lentils and French green lentils (or ⅔ cup brown lentils), rinsed • 3 cups vegetable or chickenstyle stock (or use stock powder and water) • 1 large onion, roughly chopped • 2 stalks celery, roughly chopped • 1 large carrot, peeled and roughly chopped • 200g Portobello or shiitake mushrooms (or a mixture)

(aquafaba) • 1 tbsp sesame or poppy seeds TO MAKE IT GLUTEN-FREE Use GF flour, pastry, stock and soy sauce.

FILLING continued • 4 cloves garlic, crushed • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 3 tbsp tomato paste • ½ cup walnuts, whizzed to a crumb • 2 tsp vegetable or chickenstyle stock powder • ½ tsp fennel seeds • ½ tsp cumin seeds • 2 tsp soy sauce or tamari • 1 tsp paprika • ½ tsp curry powder • ½ tsp finely ground black pepper • ¼ cup plain flour TO ASSEMBLE • 350g rolled dairy-free flaky puff pastry • ¼ cup canned chickpea liquid

To make the filling, simmer the lentils in the stock until just tender — about 25 minutes. Drain and set aside. Place the onion, celery, carrot, mushrooms and garlic in a food processor and pulse until chopped quite finely but not mushy. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped veges and cook, stirring, for 15-20 minutes, until they have reduced right down to a soft golden mush. Add the drained lentils and remaining filling ingredients except the flour, and stir to combine. Cook for another 5 minutes or so over a medium heat. If it seems a little dry, add more tomato paste and a little water and cook a bit more. Add the flour and stir through. Remove from the heat and leave to cool down to room temperature (or put in a bowl in the fridge to speed it up). Line a large baking tray with baking paper.

To assemble, lay the pastry sheet/s out on a clean floured benchtop (or roll your own to about 5mm thick). Arrange the cooled filling in a neat log (about 6cm wide) lengthways down the middle. Fold up both sides of the pastry snugly (you might have a big overlap, but that’s okay — pastry is yum). Brush a little water on both parts where the pastry joins. Place seam-side down on the lined baking tray and refrigerate for 20 minutes or so to firm up. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan-bake (190°C regular bake). Slice the chilled log into hearty chunks using a bread knife and a light sawing motion. Brush the rolls all over with the aquafaba and prick the tops a couple of times with a knife. Sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds. Bake in the lower half of the oven for around 45 minutes, or until the pastry is dark golden brown and puffy. Serve with a dollop of tomato sauce, relish or chutney. Extracted from Supergood by Chelsea Winter, published by Random House NZ, RRP $50.00. Text © Chelsea Winter 2020. Photography © Tam West 2020

Bringing it in for Christmas Featured as part of the current exhibition TcFinearts students exhibition at Uxbridge’s Malcolm Smith gallery. Howick artist Lindsay Farr’s painting Natalie and Son is a play on the Madonna and child theme from the Renaissance era. Lindsay has cleverly swapped out Mary and Jesus and replaced them with his daughter and grandson. The painting combines traditional techniques with some very modern and contemporary ones. The use of gold leaf is a nod to the Renaissance. One of the meanings of the name Natalie is Born at Christmas. Natalie’s birthday is December 18 which ties the whole meaning of the painting together for Lindsay. Another artwork by Lindsay included in the exhibition is a copy based on Gustav Klimt’s The Music with Natalie’s daughter

Recipe’s from yesteryear – recipes written by hand by Ada Lucy Squire, grandmother of the Times’Reay Neben; and a gorgeous Christmas cake with brandy butter icing. Photo BBC

Old recipes bring back fond memories Times Media’s managing director Reay Neben recently came across an old recipe book which belonged to her grandmother.

R

ecently I discovered recipes that belonged to my grandmother nearly 100 years ago. Over that time we have certainly changed how and what we eat. I thought with Christmas nearly here I would, each week, share some of these with you to try making if they appeal. My grandmother was a wonderful cook and baker with a great selection of recipes. I love this one.

MOCK WHITEBAIT Make a batter of one egg, ½ cup of milk, 3 tablespoons flour, season with pepper and salt and allow to stand for 3 or 4 hours. Mix in some cooked silver beet stems cut into fine strips crossways. Add a flavouring of celery salt and fry in boiling fat. Serve very hot. Potatoes may be used in the same way.

KC14955-V4

PUDDING SPANISH CREAM One pint of milk, 1oz gelatine, 2eggs, 2oz sugar, flavouring. Soak gelatine in milk for ½ hour. Beat yolks of eggs and sugar to a cream. Stir over fire until almost boiling. Let cool and then stir in beaten whites of eggs and put in a mould to set.

BUTTER ICING FOR CHRISTMAS CAKE Sift 1lb icing sugar in a bowl and add 6oz butter. Cream well together then add 2 teaspoons essence vanilla. Beat well then add 3 tablespoons brandy, beat well, add more icing sugar if you require the mixture any stiffer. Some people add a pinch of salt. Don’t. This icing doesn’t go hard - keeps well and easy to cut. That’s my first lot. Please enjoy and let me know your successes.

Wishing everyone a great festive season PUTTING A PERMANENT SMILE ON PEOPLE’S FACES

EDUCATION

Big farewell for teacher By FARIDA MASTER

T

heresa Louisson was least expecting it. A teacher at Pakuranga Heights School for 26 years, she was visibly moved when principal Fintan Kelly announced at a school assembly on Wednesday that the new covered outdoor learning area would be dedicated to the long-term teacher who is retiring this term. “We are going to name the structure (shade) Theresa Louisson Cloud and would like to honour her dedication and long service to Pakuranga Heights School. “Also her flexibility to teach different classes, whenever needed was remarkable,” he said. A blessing followed by a moving waiata (song) by the students reverberated

through the school grounds and a kapa haka set the mood for a touching farewell attended by students, teachers and even parents of ex-students. In the profession for 32 years, Louisson has always been passionate about teaching children about the environment and sustainability. Talking to the Times, the Enviro teacher proudly points out to the bush area that surrounds the school saying, “We didn’t have native birds earlier, but after we planted that native bush along with native trees (some of which existed) we have tui and fantails and other native birds at school. You can hear the bird song.” About the unveiling of the plaque, dedicated to her, she says she was in for a big surprise.

“It was a shock for me. I wasn’t expecting it at all! I am sure there would have been other teachers who would have deserved that honour. I am very touched.” As for retiring she says, “Teaching is a part of my soul. I will never fully retire. I am sure I will do fill-in roles and be involved with the profession in some way or the other.” Margret Wilson, a Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) teacher, says that Louisson always had a very special way with students. “She knows how to bring out the best in them. I’ve often tried to observe her teaching methods and asked young teachers to make notes on how well she teaches but it is something that we can never replicate. She is indeed very, very special.”

For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way. Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about state-of-the-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and

combinations that are now available that is hardly ever the same for each patient. If light metal frameworks have to be used you can be rest assured that they are nickel and beryllium free” she says. With more than 20 years of creating dentures it is no wonder Ugie has clients locally and around the world that sing her praises. Niche Denture Centre has its own onsite laboratory which means you don’t have to wait a week sometimes more for a repair or a reline. These can be taken care of onsite, helping you back into your smile almost immediately. Niche Denture Centre is situated conveniently on ground level with ample parking right outside the building and easy to access even for clients on wheelchairs.

These can sometimes show and ruin a beautiful smile. “Now we are equipped with technology to resolve this. There are so many

TESTIMONIALS CORNEL BRITZ SAYS “For years I suffered with bad decaying teeth, covering my mouth with my hand when talking or smiling. I gradually became withdrawn and self conscious. Since Ugie from Niche Dentures has fitted me with a beautiful set of dentures I cannot stop smiling and now have the confidence to step out into the world with a confident smile. Thank you Ugie for your specialised and friendly treatment. You changed my life!!” MAE SALVADOR SAYS “for me a smile is the prettiest thing a lady can wear. But I didn’t always feel that way. I had my previous set of dentures made overseas and I was embarrassed to smile. It was an awful feeling as they didn’t even work properly. When I returned to NZ I was referred to Ugie at Niche Denture Centre by my sister-in-law and now I can smile confidently. In fact I feel like smiling all the time. Thank you Ugie for my beautiful smile.”

New minister shares a sense of belonging

ADVERTORIAL MP3586A

Everyone longs to belong and have lasting relationships says ministerial assistant Andre Peasley whose arrival at the St Columba Presbyterian Church, Botany has been welcomed with open arms. “Small groups at the Church become spiritual families to each other and support one another in a crisis,” says Peasley who will assist Senior Minister Rev Chris Barnard and the rest of the team at St Columba. He is grateful to have found a spiritual home and fellowship in a family-oriented community. “Everyone is so welcoming and hospitable. It’s a good ministry match,” says the 48-year-old Family minister at St Columba. Born in Johannesburg, Peasley is son of a South African Baptist pastor. He hails from a family of pastors and evangelists and has had long experience working with youth, family ministry as well as traditional and contemporary worship services. Keen to create a culture of acceptance he says, “Share your sorrows, and they are halved. Share your joys and it’s doubled.” He further shares an interesting theory about first impressions. “Research says that in the first six minutes people decide whether they will come back to a church ... even without listening to the sermon. “Depending on how they are welcomed, people know instantly whether they belong or not ... it’s important to find out people’s needs and create a culture of belonging – whether you are Korean, Chinese, Samoan or Kiwi. St Columba caters for worship services in each of these languages as well as an 8.30am Hymnal/Traditional and a 10.30am Contemporary service, both in English. “Our church strives to reflect the demographics of the whole community and we at St Columba embrace diversity. Everyone is welcome. I feel so lucky to be a part of something big which is not just a church, but a church for the community with its Op Shop, youth and children’s groups, children’s playgroups, counselling and care, English classes – a community that connects. It’s a place of wholeness, heart and vision.” With twenty years of ministerial experience in various cultures, Peasley will have a particular responsibility to oversee the family ministries among the many other

GOODBYE HOLDEN, HELLO SKODA Andre Peasley, the new Ministerial Assistant at St Columba Presbyterian Church, Botany with wife Freule and children (left to right) Luan, Ane and Shani. Photo supplied by John Winters roles he will play. He says he truly enjoys working with teams. “The principle of collaboration and synergy maximise its impact. I also have a special passion and calling for evangelism and church planning. In addition, I enjoy working with small groups to develop people’s gifts involved in ministering and to develop leaders.” After a post-graduate in Theology in the United States at Southwestern Baptist Theological seminary, at Fort Worth, Texas, Peasley completed two further theological degrees in theology and ministry at Stellenbosch University Cape Town while he was at the Dutch Reformed Church. As pastor, he was involved with planting two new multicultural faith communities. He also helped with evangelism, outreach and missions and assisted with worship, young adults and small group ministries. Peasley met his wife Freule in London. A teacher by profession she has around 20 years of teaching experience in South Africa, UK, US and New Zealand. The mother-of-three, 16-year-old Ane, 14-year-old Luan and eight-year-old Shani is currently teaching at a Christian pre-school in Matamata and hopes to relocate soon to a school in east Auckland.

Skoda cars are now back in fashion again, but for a different reason. Some 40 years ago, Skoda cars and crimplene suits were synonymous with the Pakuranga electorate and Social Credit. Today, Social Credit is still around, just, but the police have now selected the Skoda Superb as their new front line vehicle. Those Skoda vehicles are already used over in Europe by Police and other agencies, and are now in line for use in New Zealand. Our well-used Holden vehicles are fast-disappearing off the roads, at about 400 vehicles a year, never to be seen again. So, if you see a Skoda behind you next year, it could well be that the driver is not wearing a crimplene suit, but police blues. So, be warned, and watch your Ps and Qs out there when driving.

WE MUST FORGIVE THE FOLLY OF YOUTH The stripping of Pablo Matera of his captaincy of the Argentine rugby team for tweets made seven and nine years ago is ridiculous. Everyone who has been a teenager has probably done or said something ridiculous, possibly under the influence. To be held accountable when the matter is longforgotten speaks to archaeological shaming; who researched and revealed his indiscretions and for what purpose? What type of person searches like that for anything wrong in anyone’s history for which they could be punished? Which is not to say they should be punished. Where is the forgiveness for the mistakes of youth? Is anyone or everyone beyond forgiveness in this new cancel-culture? I would guarantee that there are millions, if not more, who have been through circumstances in life where they have said or done something for which, in the long term, they could

or should be forgiven if people demonstrated more understanding. If society continues in this unforgivable direction, then not only is no-one safe but society itself will become an unsafe space as old enmities are dredged up and social scars continually picked at, never allowed to heal. The Argentine Rugby Union should have made a start with a censure rather than a punishment. Pablo is not the youth of a decade ago.

WILL NO-ONE SORT THESE CHOOKS OUT? Our home is being over run by hens and roosters. I phoned the SPCA on 23.11.20, but it was after hours and was put through to Auckland City Council animal despatch. I spoke to a Jonah and explained to him the surrounding yards of about five houses have roosters and hens running around wild and that one hen has laid eggs in the corner of our back yard. I was fearful for the hen as it was sitting on the eggs. We have a dog and a cat and I was worried they may attack the hen. Jonah spoke to a supervisor and told me they do not deal with livestock, considering the hen was alive. I was annoyed so I let it go and decided to ring SPCA the next morning. Cory from despatch SPCA called me 24.11.20 after I left a message and explained again about the laying hens. She said they will not pick up healthy hens (OMG) and they were going to transfer me to Animal Control Auckland City Council. I said please don’t because they wont help. In the end none of them would help or even offer to come over to take a look.

Photo supplied

I thought SPCA means Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I was trying to prevent the cruelty. As you can see by one of the photos, the hen abandoned the eggs yesterday, probably because there was a downpour of rain and no shelter.

CHOOKS COULD BE ON CHRISTMAS MENU The rooster in the Maugham Drive area, which I complained about in a letter to the Times, November 16, has been silenced. The neighbours living around its territory must be very relieved. As a result of that letter, I was contacted by an 88-year-old woman living in the Panmure area regarding her problems with chooks and the manner in which the Council has ducked its responsibilities. Someone in her neighbourhood acquired some chooks and a rooster but failed to confine them. There are ever-increasing numbers of chooks, including roosters, roaming the neighbourhood and causing problems. She has had up to 15 of them in her garden. They have ruined the lawn and wrecked her vegetable garden. She has complained to the Council several times this year. The Council has identified the owner but says that it is a community problem and therefore the community must solve it. Now that the festive season has arrived, I recommend the neighbourhood should take advantage of obtaining some free-range chooks and dealing with them in the same way the Council should be treated for its cavalier attitude towards this distressed woman – roast them!

Conway deserves test berth H

aving scored a splendid century for New Zealand A against the touring West Indies, opening batsman Will Young deserves a second chance despite his meagre five runs in the Seddon Park test, won by the Black Caps by an innings and 134 runs. However No 5 batsman Henry Nicholls (7) may not be so lucky in the face of the challenge presented by prodigiously talented South African-born Devon Conway leading up to Friday’s second test at the Basin Reserve. In scoring his third double century with a personal best 251, gifted captain Kane Williamson was the epitome of intelligent batting as the home team amassed a first innings 519/7 declared. Yet overall, it was far from a complete team performance with Tom Latham (86), Kyle Jamieson (51) and Ross Taylor (38) the only others to score more than 14. But with Tim Southee (4/35) leading the charge, backed by Kyle Jamieson (2/25), Neil Wagner (2/33) and Trent Boult (1/30), the Indies could offer no more than a token 138. That improved to 247 in the second innings thanks to Jermaine

Blackwood’s 104 and Alzarri Joseph’s 86, but not enough to prevent the Black Caps bolting home on the fourth day. Bowling a fuller length than usual, the admirable Wagner fully deserved his 4/66 with the 6ft 8in (2m) Jamieson (2/42) confirming his

all-rounder status. Having thrashed India, England, Bangladesh, and England and the West Indies once more in five of the previous six tests and registering a draw against Sri Lanka, New Zealand have fashioned a marvellous record on home soil.

However the nightmare of last season’s tour of Australia still haunts when the team wilted badly. Now, however, the team looks stronger, especially if all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme and wicketkeeper BJ Watling recover from injuries and Conway gets the promotion he so richly deserves. Having failed to field a spinner for the Hamilton test, the pacemen all bowled to a nagging length. And these didn’t include speedster Lockie Ferguson who took a five-wicket bag in the T20 with his lightning 150km/h plus strikes. Meanwhile having named their 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa squad, the Blues look good to at least repeat their second placing behind the Crusaders and hopefully beat them. That confidence is based on the selection of nine All Black forwards, four of them props with Nepo

Laulala joining Alex Hodgman, Ofa Tu’ungafasi and Karl Tu’inukuafe. In linking up with Akira Ioane, Hoskins Sotutu and Dalton Papalii, Dillon Hunt also gives them four AB loose forwards along with lock Patrick Tuipulotu. Add to that centre Rieko Ioane and left wing Caleb Clarke and they don’t lack backline pace and flair. Having scored eight tries in 10 games for Taranaki, commentators nightmare Jacob RatumaitavukiKneepkens can play wing and fullback equally well. Young Aucklander Zarn Sullivan is another classy fullback lacking only in experience. While head coach Leon MacDonald admits Beauden Barrett’s experience will be missed when he heads for Japan, Otere Black played well at first-five and Stephen Perofeta will be eager to stake his claim after being sidelined with injury this year. While NZ Maori deservedly rejoiced in their 28-21 win against Moana Pasifika, the latter did enough to show they deserve inclusion in Super Rugby. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
