e became the National Party’s leader after just a year in politics and now Botany MP Christopher Luxon is vowing he won’t forget about the people who elected him to Parliament. He took over from Judith Collins as National’s leader on November 30 after she suffered a motion of noconfidence by her caucus. Since then he’s reshuffled his parliamentary line-up and his MPs’ portfolios and conducted numerous interviews with news media about his new role. Luxon told the Times he wants to acknowledge and thank the “good folk of Botany who chose me as their local MP just over a year ago. I’ve loved getting to know you and working on the community issues that affect each of you. “It’s natural as Leader of

the Opposition that I will have to spend slightly more time outside the electorate, but I can assure you my level of service and my dedication to our community will not change.” Luxon says he’ll continue to be accessible and he will keep supporting locals whenever they need help. “I will be just as active as I have been in the last 12 months and continue to be an advocate and champion for local campaigns and causes. “We should be proud of ourselves for what we have achieved together and brought to the Government’s attention, such as the lack of after-hours healthcare and the need for better transport infrastructure. “My team and I are here to serve you as we have always been, so please continue to get in touch with me and make your views known. ➤ Turn to page 3

A total of 125 trees have been planted throughout the area during this planting season. New leader shakes up National’s rankings

Luxon vows to continue fighting for Botany

By CHRIS HARROWELL

B

otany MP and new National Party leader Christopher Luxon has announced a reshuffle of his MPs’ portfolios and parliamentary rankings. He says the new party list represents a “fresh, energised alternative government ready to deliver for Kiwis in 2023”. As part of the changes Luxon is taking on the national security and intelligence portfolio and has given up his previous portfolios of land information; local government; and research, science and manufacturing. He was also associate spokesperson for transport. Luxon has promoted Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, who moves up the list rankings from 20th to ninth and takes on

the transport and public service portfolios. Brown’s previous portfolios of police and Serious Fraud Office have gone to Whangaparaoa MP Mark Mitchell, a former police officer. “The line-up I’m announcing today is based on merit and matches people to their strengths and skill sets,” Luxon says. “My Shadow Cabinet leverages the wealth of talent and depth of real-world experience across the National caucus team. I have deliberately selected a Shadow Cabinet of 20 members to match the Government’s Cabinet. “I’m confident that when you put any of National’s Shadow Ministers against their Labour counterparts, you’ll see National’s MPs have the deep experience, the political skills, the work ethic and the intellec-

It will “relentlessly hold this spin-heavy and PR-driven Government to account, and focus on proposing detailed, constructive and intellectually rigorous solutions”, he says. “New Zealanders deserve so much more than they’re currently getting from Labour. They deserve more than a government of rhetoric. The National Government I lead will be a government of action. “We are the ambitious, futurefocused alternate that New

From now, our singular priority every day will be working hard to earn Kiwis’ trust and confidence so we can get to the Beehive in 2023 and deliver for them.” Luxon has retained Wellington-based List MP Chris Bishop as National’s spokesperson for Covid-19 Response and given him back the Shadow Leader of the House role, which former National Party leader Judith Collins had previously stripped him of. Luxon has demoted Collins to a list ranking of 19th and appointed her the party’s spokesperson for research, science, innovation and technology.

➤ From page 1 “I will always be available to support constituents.” Luxon wasted no time becoming active on local issues after entering Parliament. He campaigned with Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown to retain an overnight medical service in east Auckland, to have police keep a physical presence in Howick, and to stop the sale of local Auckland Councilowned public reserves. He’s also working with Cockle Bay residents and Auckland Transport to address long-standing issues around speeding vehicles and road safety in that suburb.

Sergeant Brett Meale of Howick police says an investigation is under way into a shoplifting incident at a Howick store on December 3. “At about 2.45pm a man and woman entered the store in Central Terrace (in Howick),” Meale says. “After a period of time, the pair exited the store with bags full of stock.

Award-winning mural unveiled Local artist Joel Nicholls has unveiled his awardwinning mural titled, ‘Water, Water, Water Everywhere’ across from the New World carpark in Howick. Nicholls, from Howick, was one of 10 winners from across the country who took out the top prize in Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s Resene Nature Murals Competition 2021. The mural depicts a huge pukeko set against a blue water background trying to drink from a bottle. Taking inspiration from the saying ‘Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink’ [from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’], Nicholls says he wanted to convey the concept that whilst water may be available, it’s not always clean or drinkable. The Resene Nature Murals Competition, which is part of the Paint New Zealand Beautiful programme, ran from April to June 2021, with artists encouraged to submit mural designs which included an environmental message. Artists from around the country sent in

their designs, with the top 10 murals selected based on their environmental message, enhancement of the community and originality/creativity. Artists then had 12 months to bring their mural to life. Winning designs receive a $1000 grant upon completion along with a $750 Resene paint voucher and other materials to paint their mural. Keep New Zealand Beautiful CEO, Heather Saunderson, said the Our Nature Murals Competition is getting more popular every year. “This is the fifth year we’ve run the competition in partnership with Resene and, once again, we’ve been overwhelmed with not only the quantity, but the quality of the entries we’ve received. “We know the benefits that beautification of public spaces can have on local communities so we’re always excited to see it when these murals come to life.” The 10 winning artists and their designs can be seen on the Keep New Zealand Beautiful website.

Michael Raines, the owner of Howick Meats butchery in Vincent Street, says it’s been a tough 12 months for businesses that had to shut down due to Covid restrictions. He says only people who had to personally deal with such a situation know just how hard it is and he wants to thank his customers “for coming through for us during the year, for supporting us, and for being there for us not just as customers but as people who see us as more than that”. “They give us support, help, and friendship,” Michael says. “Our customers keep us going and without them we wouldn’t have made it. ANNIVERSARY

Waterworld Aquapark is coming to Maraetai and surrounding beaches this summer for explosive fun. Photo supplied

HOLIDAYS

Waterworld comes to Maraetai By ZOE GARDEN Waterworld Aquapark is making a splash in Maraetai/ Ohinerangi this summer. The massive inflatable water course will be coasting the shores of Maraetai and surrounding beaches from mid-December until Waitangi weekend. From December 19-24, Waterworld will be open to everyone 5+ at Maraetai Beach, starting at 10am and finishing at 7pm. Then the water course will be at Mairangi Bay from December 24-29, Maraetai December 25-30, continuing for six-day intervals at these spots until February 4. Kel Travers, managing director of Waterworld, says he’d always wanted to get a waterpark out south-east. “We had a big debrief with Auckland Council event facilitators in April,” Travers says. “They went, ‘yeah, let’s do it.’” Travers says that Waterworld is looking for security guards at night and water-qualified lifeguards during the day. “It’s always great to hire the locals,”

Travers says. The watercourse will have slides, blobs that send people flying up into the air, monkey bars, log runs, ball runs, obstacles to walk around, swings and more for anyone bounding on for their one-hour sessions. It is required for anyone, including adult supervisors for 5-9 year old children, to be a confident swimmer. Children under supervision will be wearing a yellow wristband. Anyone over 70+ is granted free entrance. Due to Covid-19, Waterworld will have a number of safety preventive measures in place. They will start off with 80 per session (one-hour), with 15-20 minutes break between to ensure everything is in order. Vaccination passports will be required. Interested parties are encouraged to book online first. The water course, Travers says, is an exciting and fun family-centric adventure. “It’s a whole family thing,” Travers says. “There are not many things that bring the whole family together. That’s the really cool thing about water parks.”

owick, Pakuranga and surrounding districts next year mark the 175th anniversary of the Fencibles’ landing. And among the variety of ways in which this momentous moment is being marked, Times Media has published a book, ‘Owairoa to Howick’. It’s been a labour of love which has seen the publication of a large selection of newspaper columns printed in the Times over the past five years and penned by Howick historian Alan La Roche. Times Media’s managing director Reay Neben is delighted with the book and believes everyone from the area will be keen to acquire a copy for posterity. “As Howick and districts head into 2022 celebrating 175 years since the Fencibles arrived, it seemed timely that we publish most of the published history columns in one place,” Neben said. “Editor Nick Krause had suggested a column for the paper to Alan la Roche back at the 170th anniversary and, as the saying goes, the rest is history. “So this is five years’ work refined and now published. Howick Village Market reopens Welcome back to the Howick Village Market – our re-open date is Saturday December 11. All staff/customers/stallholders will be fully vaccinated to attend the Howick Village Market. Vaccine Certificates will be scanned on entry for everyone. QR coding and mask-wearing is mandatory. Everyone will be required to keep 1 metre distance (with the exception of your own household bubble). We will have only one entrance into the market at the back of the Market Square. This will have an exit next to it for counting numbers of customers in and out of the market place. Please line up along the alleyway next to Hancocks Café. A perimeter will be in place to create a closed market zone. Extra security and extra staff will be brought in to keep the flow of the market running safely and smoothly. Stall holders may be in different places to what customers are used to so please search or ask for your favourites. We appreciate we may not all have the same view, however, by following this process, it enables the market to open and get back to doing what we all want to do… enjoy the beautiful produce and craft of the market we have all missed.

indoor market for the first time. So if you are a first-timer, just follow the vibrant red Classy Crafts signage on Picton Street and you will find a warm welcome, unique gift ideas and friendly crafters to help you. For your safety, Covid principles will apply, with face masks and vaccine passports required for entry and the usual electronic and manual sign-in, and handwash, readily available.

COMMUNITY

Local hero retires after 30 years of service to her community By ZOE GARDEN

A

long-standing local is retiring this month after nearly 30 years of service to the community. Cherry Tawhai started working as Te Tuhi’s centre administrator 13 years ago when she returned to her Howick home in 2008. Her long and fruitful career and work for the community began at Dunkirk Road Activity Centre in the early 1990s. After a year as Dunkirk’s community centre manager, she made her way to

Auckland Council, where she was involved with coordinating multiple community initiatives and centres across what was then the Tamaki Ward. Tawhai was closely involved in a Mt Albert growth project which saw the production of a mural that celebrated the suburb’s diverse population. It was after 15 productive years at Auckland Council that Tawhai started working for Te Tuhi. With her background at the council, Tawhai applied her rich community experience to the job.

In addition to keeping the building in pristine working condition, Tawhai acted as the face of Te Tuhi for the local community. She ran outreach for Te Tuhi’s schools programme, organised fundraising for community initiatives and coordinated community activities that took place within the building. She also established several significant projects operating out of Te Tuhi including Arts Out East, a community arts brokering service, and youth and family activities. In 2020, Tawhai helped

establish Te Tuhi Café, the country’s first training café for people with intellectual disabilities. Tawhai is a familiar face around the community. She acted as both a committee member and chairperson at Dunkirk Road Activity Centre for five years and became

treasurer for East Auckland Tourism in 2016. Of her love for working with different communities, Tawhai says, “I love that chance to be part of the bigger picture. There’s no them and us, you feel connected to everything and you are truly working as a team. You really

feel like you’re contributing.” Tawhai, Te Tuhi says, is renowned for her bright, cando attitude and no-nonsense approach to getting the job done – and a fantastic sense of humour. She is looking forward to a retirement with her husband, Tom and their new campervan.

The most votes in Auckland went to ...

“DAISY CHANG – DRUNKEN NOODLES” We are excited and so proud to make the Auckland 100 Iconic Eats list for our Drunken Noodles. Thank you to all those who voted for us! Drunken noodles are a traditional Thai dish with rice noodles, eight-hour braised beef, kaffir, lime, eggs with a hefty serve of garlic and chilli! If you haven’t tried them you need too! The accolades must go to our chef Jakrapun Imthongbai (Bong as he is affectionately known) for his incredible flavours! It was amazing to receive this news, especially after such a hard 100 odd days of lockdowns and restrictions. We would like to thank all you wonderful people who supported us during this time, and who continue to do so – we are very grateful. Exciting changes are on the horizon for us – Bong has now taken over the kitchen in the Apothecary Café also, with a totally new kitchen team. We have a new day menu, and are working on a new dinner menu for the New Year! With summer here and outdoor dining at a premium, we have new outdoor furniture outside the Apothecary and Piggy Bar. We hope you enjoy our new leaners – they’re proving very popular already! Christmas is around the corner, and with three venues, we’re able to cater for groups from 10 to 150. Whether it’s a meal for two, a team lunch/dinner or a private function, we can help. We have some competitive packages available and would love to help. From all the team at Daisy Chang, Piggy Bar and the Apothecary café, we wish you all a happy and safe Christmas.

Black pepper and sumac strawberries with honey crème fraîche LUCY CORRY THE KITCHENMAID

Homecooked seasonal recipes for every day ➤ Penguin ➤ Random House ➤ RRP $55

SERVES 4 PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES, PLUS STEEPING TIME COOK TIME: 7 MINUTES Enliven early-season strawberries (or ones from your garden that aren’t as you’d like) with this delicious syrup, which can be made in advance and stored in the fridge.

1 cup caster sugar 1 cup hot water 2 tbsp sumac 5 good grinds (about 1 tsp freshly ground) black pepper 250-350g strawberries, hulled 1 cup crème fraîche 2 tbsp honey Put the sugar and water in a small pot set over a medium heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then add the sumac and black pepper. Simmer gently for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat. Cool, then strain through a fine sieve. If the strawberries are large, halve or quarter them and add to the syrup. If you’re using smaller

berries, prick them with a skewer or fork before adding them to the syrup. Cover and let steep for at least 2 hours at room temperature, or in the fridge overnight. Just before serving, stir the crème fraîche and honey together. Divide the berries between four plates or bowls. Dollop on some crème fraîche and pour over a generous slosh of the syrup.

Financial stress makes Christmas not so jolly for two out of five Kiwis

C

onsumer NZ’s Sentiment Tracker has revealed that two out of five of New Zealanders feel the added cost of Christmas adds financial stress during the holiday season. One in four feels that expectations from others and social pressure lead to more spending at Christmas time. “For many people, it’s been a tumultuous year financially the rising cost of living is really squeezing some households and Christmas is becoming a bit of a financial pressure point. Our Sentiment Tracker shows that to afford Christmas, half of New Zealanders have a Christmas budget to make it through their festive finances,” Consumer NZ head of communications and

campaigns Gemma Rasmussen said. Antoinette Webby-Green has three children and a large extended family, so she has to balance the books carefully to make Christmas work. “I budget about $100 per person then divide that by 52 weeks of the year to make sure there’s money left for Christmas - that’s about $900. Budgeting helps us get ahead when its Christmas, because that’s usually a time with less income and increased spending,” Webby-Green said. “In my family there are three children and my husband, then I have six adults with extended family to buy for as well. Over the past couple of years, we’ve turned gifting with the adults to Secret

Santa to save money. Although Christmas is a day for spending time with family, it can be expensive too.” Marketers use the pressure of finding the perfect gift to their advantage over the holiday season. In the latest episode of Consumer NZ’s Consume This podcast, Dr Paul Harrison - Deakin Business School Department of Marketing unit chair and senior lecturer - talks about how the culture of gift giving at Christmas is used by advertisers. “Gift giving is one way of signalling to members of a group that we care about them and that we’d like to continue to belong to that particular group,” Dr Harrison said. “We respond a lot to marketing messages in a very subtle way.

Marketers constantly intervene with ways to make it as easy as possible for you to purchase. As an example, cues like Christmas trees or festive music enable feelings of generosity during the Christmas period. The point when you actually buy is when they’ve succeeded, and you haven’t noticed all of these different little interventions leading up to the purchase.”

CONSUMER NZ SHOPPING TIPS OVER THE HOLIDAY SEASON

• Avoid commercial Christmas hamper payment schemes like

Chrisco, you end up paying much more than the value of the goods received. • Set up a Christmas budget and put money aside each week. • Shop by special throughout the year but try to price monitor to identify true specials. A Consumer NZ mystery shopper found that some retailer “specials” might not be all that special. • Consider a Secret Santa for your family. • Encourage secondhand or homemade gifts.

The one Christmas tree mistake you don’t want to make While the silly season is upon us, Fire Security Services have a reminder not to be silly with your Christmas tree this year. When you’re heading out to the Christmas tree farm, have you considered the damage a live Christmas tree could cause? Real Christmas trees that are under-watered can dry out quickly and create a fire risk - especially when wrapped in Christmas lights. Fire Security Services Senior Alarm Technician and volunteer firefighter, Aaron Kirk, likened having a dry Christmas tree to

“having a bucket of petrol in your living room.’’ It’s best to keep your Christmas tree well-watered. “I don’t have a live Christmas tree myself, but I don’t want to be seen as the grinch! So, I encourage people with live Christmas trees to keep them watered and remember to top up the water regularly” says Aaron. “Turning Christmas tree lights off when you go to bed at night is also a must.” Modern LED Christmas lights generate less heat, however they are still a fire risk, as with any electrical equipment, so switch

Escape to Howick Village

these off at night too. A video released by the US Nation Fire Protection Association highlights the danger of real Christmas trees that in homes unwatered. It’s only a matter of seconds until the room is engulfed in flames. h t t p s : // w w w. y o u t u b e . c o m / watch?v=xr6b9b8FYKk

AARON’S TOP 5 FIRE SAFETY TIPS THIS CHRISTMAS

• If you have a real Christmas tree, check water levels regularly and keep it topped up. This will

A unique shopping experience in charming surroundings

not only keep your tree nice and green, it will also lower the fire risk. • Turn off your Christmas lights at night. Flick them off when you go to bed so you can sleep easy. • Check the condition of your lights and don’t use them if they have exposed wires. It’s a good idea to keep pets away to ensure they don’t chew at the lights. • Only use indoor Christmas lights indoors, and outdoor lights outdoors. Check the packaging to play it safe. • Check your smoke alarms. This goes for any time of year!

people and businesses need to band together and support those desperately trying to feed themselves and their families. “As Aucklanders prepare for a Christmas like no other, we felt it was important to do our part to support the community as best we can. We know this time of year can be hard for people already doing it tough, and we hope that with this collaboration, we can do our small part for the community. “Bread & Butter is a well-known and well-loved Auckland establishment and was the perfect partner for us to raise funds and awareness for Auckland City Mission and sprinkle some seasonal spirit with fun, festive cookies.” Bread & Butter Bakery director Isabel Pasch said Bread & Butter

A boy who went missing from his family’s east Auckland home ended up being rescued from water by emergency services. The incident began at about 5.50pm on November 30 when the boy’s mother phoned police to say her sixyear-old son, who has autism, was missing from their Pakuranga home. A police spokesperson says the police’s Eagle helicopter quickly responded to begin search efforts in the area while officers were also sent to the family’s home. “Within 10 minutes, Eagle located the boy up to his waist in the nearby estuary, nearly 30 metres from shore. “Concerned he may wade out further and get into difficulty, the Eagle crew decided to land the helicopter and send a member out to retrieve the young boy. “The crew member went into the water and picked the boy up and brought him back to shore. “The boy was checked over and found to be uninjured. “Our staff were very happy to safely return him to his extremely relieved mother.”

rmiston Senior College’s assistant principal is receiving an award for her outstanding contribution to teaching and education leadership. Erika Jenkins was announced one of four recipients of the National Excellence in Teaching Award (NEiTA) in an online ceremony yesterday. NEiTA chairman and convenor of judges Allen Blewitt said each of this year’s winners demonstrated that while education changes lives, it is teachers who can transform students’ futures. “In this year of a pandemic, this year’s winners have each shown great passion for education and an ability to enthuse others,” Blewitt says. “It’s not just the students who benefit, their colleagues and the entire school community do too. This is also seen in how each has meaningfully promoted Māori achieving as Māori in a way that has gone beyond the classroom. Jenkin has been teaching for about 23 years. She is known for her ability to teach students and teachers how to better under-

and Pacifica students achieve as “Maori or Pacifica students grounded firmly in their language, culture and identity,” Jenkins says. “The other work that gives me great joy is working with the beginning teachers.” Outside of the work in the school, Jenkins mentors Masters participants on the Ako Mātātupu/The MindLab programme which grows young leaders in education by “disrupting the inequities that exist in education and in society”. When she found out she was a recipient of the 2021 award, she could barely contain her excitement. “What an incredible honour,” Jenkins says. “I want to thank the NEiTA Foundation and the Futurity Investments Group for their recognition of teachers and the work we do to grow and support our communities.” She received a $5000 professional development grant and crystal apple trophy. Micah-Leigh Nikora, Jenkins’ fellow teacher nominator, said that Erika was a massive role model. “She is one of the most hard working and caring people that I know,” Nikora says.

ew Zealand’s worst naval tragedy is being commemorated on canvas. Accomplished Eastern Beach artist Merv Appleton has created an oil painting depicting the HMS Neptune warship which formed part of the UK’s Royal Navy during World War II. The ship’s sinking off the coast of North Africa on December 19, 1941, is New Zealand’s worst naval tragedy, according to the Royal NZ Navy’s Museum. A Royal Navy cruiser, the HMS Neptune struck four enemy mines and sank off Libya, claiming the lives of 764 men, with 150 New Zealanders among them. Appleton’s wife Colleen is a direct descendant of one of the sailors who died when the ship sank. Her uncle Norman Cook, then aged 23, was a member of the Royal NZ Naval Volunteer Reserve. “His little boy was born two months after Norman left and he never saw him,” Colleen says. “It’s so sad. It was just before Christmas and they kept getting ‘missing’ telegrams and it wasn’t confirmed until the next year. We aren’t sure if my aunty ever sent a photo of the

baby to him. He’s a gorgeous boy. Those young reservists, it’s such a sad thing.” Colleen says a “wonderful” commemorative service is held in Wellington to mark the sinking of the HMS Neptune but she’s not sure if it can go ahead due to Covid-19 restrictions. “We just thought, because of Covid, we may not be able to have any commemorations and we’re not going to get the chance to do it again.” Merv, a former Bucklands Beach Yacht Club commodore, says his goal in creating the

artwork is to increase awareness of the HMS Neptune and its fate. “There’s not really a lot of stuff around about the ship so I thought I’d do a painting. “You can’t let these things get buried in history. At each service we go to for it, only Colleen and one other lady there are direct descendants and the rest are navy officers. “We can’t afford to let these things go.” The Navy Museum says in early 1941 the New Zealand Government had “answered British Admiralty’s call for more sailors to man the

increasing number of warships being brought into service”. “The intention was for New Zealand to provide a crew for an additional Leander-Class light cruiser to serve alongside its existing ships, HMS Achilles and Leander. “HMS Neptune was approved for this purpose.” The HMS Neptune was not a New Zealand ship, but its sinking and the massive loss of life “brought grief to many homes throughout the Dominion and cities and towns across New Zealand”, the museum says.

Playground to undergo revamp By CHRIS HARROWELL

E

ast Auckland parents and children may be excited to learn a local playground will soon get a $240,000 upgrade. The work at Cockle Bay Reserve is a Howick Local Board initiative and is scheduled to get under way in early February next year. The playground’s existing swings will be replaced with a three-bay swing set, a seesaw, a set of monkey bars, and a “tube fun phone set”. It will get a natural play area with tree logs, balance beams, timber stilts and stepping logs. Shade sails will be installed in areas where there’s no existing shade from trees. A wheelchair-accessible carousel, drainage and a wet-pour rubber surface for accessible play elements will all be installed. Cultural artwork provided by local iwi Ngai Tai ki Tamaki will be implemented into the playground, which will get soft landscaping in the natural play area and tree planting. Board chairperson Adele White says: “We are excited that after a number of unfortunate delays this project will start in February.

Several pools and leisure centres in east Auckland have now opened.

LEISURE

“I know local families have been waiting patiently for this upgraded playground and I am sure they will love it. “We acknowledge the cultural artwork provided by Ngai Tai ki Tamaki in the playground, including artwork on the concrete pathway and graphic painting on poles in the natural play area.” The board is funding the work as part of its 2021-2024 customer and community services work programme. Included in this work is a decision to defer the timing

of plans to renew mountain bike trails at Lloyd Elsmore Park and “rephrasing” the timing of work to renew the Lloyd Elsmore Park Skate Park. The board is also allocating $170,000 toward renewing walkways and pathways in Howick, with a focus on commonly used pathways in Lloyd Elsmore Park, as well as an additional $450,000 in future years toward the same work and allocating funding in future years toward renewing the Lloyd Elsmore Skate Park.

Auckland Council’s pools and leisure centres will require vaccination passports for the eligible population under the traffic light framework. Gyms, group fitness and recreation centres were open to +12 and over with full vaccination and Covid-19 Vaccination Passes on December 3. Pools centres reopened on December 6. This gives the facilities extra time for them to be recommissioned and heated, and for summer lifeguards to be inducted and for staff to renew their poolside training. Howick Leisure Centre, Pakuranga Leisure Centre and Lloyd Elsmore Park Pools and Leisure Centre was among Auckland Council’s 42 pool

and leisure centres which reopened on Friday in a staggered approach with gyms and group fitness opening first. Membership and passes will remain on hold until Sunday December 5. “After [more than] 100 days of lockdown, Aucklanders will welcome being able to return to pools and leisure centres around the region to get some exercise, enjoy sports and reconnect with friends,” Mayor Phil Goff says. “A vaccination requirement for staff and everyone using our facilities will help reduce the risk of Covid-19 spreading and will keep our communities safe. It will also act as a strong incentive to those not yet vaccinated to get it done as soon as possible.”

The Repco Battle of Jacks Ridge motorsport event in rural east Auckland is the latest casualty Covid-19 restrictions. The organisers of the event, which was to be held in Whitford, say they’ve made the difficult decision to cancel it. It was originally scheduled to be held last month, but the prolonged Auckland lockdown forced it to be postponed until February 5-6 next year. Rally NZ thought that date would attract 10,000 fans to the event’s “iconic venue” at Andrew Hawkeswood’s family farm. Event manager Paul Fallon says with Auckland moving into the new Covid-19 protection framework red level with no guaranteed date of when the city would move to orange, which is required to run a large-scale event, “the commercial risk

became too great”. “We considered holding off until the next Government announcement on December 13 to

see if there was a confirmed date Auckland would move into orange,” he says. “However, with the information provided and the likelihood of Auckland remaining in red for the next few weeks, we felt it was important to give the many competitors and fans who had purchased tickets a decision. “They have travel and accommodation arrangements that need to be cancelled or changed and many would appreciate refunds prior to Christmas.” All tickets will be automatically refunded by the ticket fairy team in the coming days. Everyone who purchased tickets will automatically be invited to preferential pre-sale tickets in the New Year for the Jacks Ridge Power Stage in October’s WRC Rally New Zealand event.

BUSINESS

New craft and food market opens East Aucklanders have a new outdoor craft and food market to check out. The Flat Bush Market at Ormiston Town Centre is held under a purpose-built structure called ‘The Market’ and will be a regular event over the summer months, taking place every third Saturday from November to April. It got under way on November 20 and will next be open on December 11. The initiative is carefully managed to comply with Covid-19 restrictions. Its opening day saw about 30 stallholders take part with numbers expected to grow as restrictions ease. Todd Property Group, which developed the Ormiston Town Centre, included the open-air, multi-use space in its masterplan to provide an area to host community

events and activities. The space has so far been used for numerous town centre-related events. Todd Property Group development manager Sean Leonard says with a regular market fixture, the vision for Ormiston Town Centre is nearly complete. “The Market was created as the heart of the Ormiston community, one they can occupy and make their own. “We’re excited to host the Flat Bush Market and look forward to hosting many more events and activities in this space, where the community can celebrate its unique cultural and community mix.” ➤ For information on how to become a stallholder go online to www. ormistontown.co.nz/news/flat-bushmarket.

Feedback CLIMATE CHANGE RELIGION

Do we now have a new ‘Climate Change Religion’? COP26 [the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference] has just wound up with serious hypocrisy and concerns that global warming will continue because of Man’s polluting with CO2 and methane emissions. Even the Pope and Prince Charles have expressed their fears. Why then should you and I be concerned? Like all religions and theories there are always those who express an alternative view. We have powerful scientific and political voices on both sides of this discussion. But when boiled down it is either Man that is blamed for polluting the atmosphere or it is the Sun’s cycles and coronal outbursts that determine the climate. Certainly, man is not in charge of the Sun’s output but God is. After all He flooded the earth 4200 years ago and gave us this beautiful planet to live on. So should we fear, as this new religion would have us believe? I think not. Yes, we are experiencing climate change and will have to strengthen stop banks, build fire breaks, and prepare for earthquakes and tsunamis. These are all increasing in intensity and frequency and these are ways God uses to shake us out of our apathy. Man has little or no control over the climate; it is controlled by the Sun cycles and the Creator God. Acknowledging His purposes births our human wisdom and removes undue fear.

LET’S GET A FEW THINGS STRAIGHT

Re: ‘We stand strong when we’re united, Julie Adolph, Times, December 1. The thing about statistics is they’re only numbers and open to interpretation, whereas an expert opinion is a judgment based on the evidence and understanding it. It is true a vaccinated person can contract Covid-19 and infect another with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but both outcomes are very much less likely for a vaccinated person. And even less likely again if both are wearing masks and keeping apart. Now that we will be living with Covid in the community, we need to get a few things straight. As a group, those who refuse a vaccination are a drag on hospital services and a threat to the people around them – even those who have recovered from Covid, and especially old people. Let’s hope science gives us a vaccine which enhances the natural resistance of the lining in the upper part of the airway, as well as updating the existing vaccines as the virus spike mutates, which act deeper in the body. In the meantime, we must accept vaccination is not perfect but it’s a great deal better than nothing. Vaccination has just become more important in light of new research: even if you recover from Covid, a severe infection doubles your chances of dying in the following year – from other causes. This is a nasty virus and it may get worse.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

We agree with Christopher Luxon, “Enough is enough. Aucklanders desperately need confidence, certainty and hope” (Times, November 24). As our representative in Parliament, we hope he will find ways to do exactly that, rather than continuing to document “countless devastating stories”. We would rather hear more about his policy solutions “that could be implemented overnight”, their impacts, long-term consequences and how he thinks they would affect us both personally and collectively – something for all of us to hope for. We can’t expect certainty from Covid or the Climate, but we certainly expect confidence and hope from our leaders. With his corporate background, Mr Luxon, no doubt, understands the need to navigate change. The new normal we are experiencing calls [on] leaders to shift from promises of ‘certainty’ to interdependent actions that give hope and build resilience.

What a great opportunity for Mr Luxon to redefine the ethos of the Opposition from one that lays blame, to one that strengthens us as a people working together. This would give us confidence in our governance system giving us certainty of positive, esteembuilding behaviours that respect diversity and buoy us with hope.

THERE ARE NO EXCUSES

Does the team of five million include those recalling Jesus’ words – ‘greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his friends’. [Do they] who wonder how Kiwis became those happy to watch their brothers and sisters be thrown to the wolves; their representatives making all who disagree with their dictatorial abuses worthy of losing their livelihoods? If Jesus had never said it, perhaps we could be excused; but He did: we are without excuse. Our government doesn’t own our lives; the God who made us does. If we continue to surrender to the godless now, not only will we remove ourselves from the blessings of our God, we will expose ourselves to the fury of theirs. Those of our fathers who survived war, because their brothers in that ultimate sense lived out Jesus’ words, must now be looking upon us with shame. How do we go about our lives pretending to see nothing, allowing the people of our nation to become so despised by our government that they are stripped of their jobs? Revolting.

Our fathers acquitted themselves with honour. Today, it seems, the men of our nation are happy to condemn it and themselves unto tyranny.

Rees Sutliffe East Tamaki Heights

VAX DISCRIMINATION

As for the vaccinations, I am not a “no vax, no job” person. I disagree with this policy and manipulation. I would not ask anyone if they have been vaccinated. That is encroaching on their personal privacy. Another reason for not asking is that if I found out someone had not been vaccinated, I would not want to be tempted to discriminate [against] them. I do believe a person ought to be able to make their own choice and that they should not be marginalised, manipulated or treated differently for the choice they have made. Please remember, if we have been doubly vaccinated, they tell us that we ought to be reasonably safe. So why be fearful? Otherwise, we are undermining the ability of the vaccine to keep us safe. People feel bad enough about the changes going on in the world without me adding to their fears. I don’t want to make people feel like a leper around me. I understand people’s need to feel safe, be responsible and exercise added caution. But is discriminating based on a person’s vaccination status part of ‘being kind’ and ‘uniting together’?

G de Gruchy Construction, whose owner is based in Clevedon, has taken home the Supreme Renovation of the Year and Bunnings Renovation Over $1 Million honours at the Master Builders House of the Year 2021 virtual awards. The judges were impressed with the level of quality and innovation from this year’s 347 entrants. The judges observed several new trends including the comeback of the home office, bathrooms as central space to retreat, and softening colour palettes. Architectural forms and use of complex external materials also impressed the judges. House of the Year judge and architectural designer Faye Pearson-Green said this year they have seen entrants continue to push the boundaries with their use of external materials, cladding and complex architectural forms. “This requires more intricate detailing and a high level of craftmanship to execute,” Pearson-Green said. Due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions the awards were

Master Builders from across the country gathered with colleagues, friends, and families to watch from the comfort of their homes, workplaces and even at local viewing parties. Clive Barrington Construction took out this year’s Supreme House of the Year and Resene New Home over $2 million award for its home in Christchurch. Judges were in awe of this home’s unique design and function. “Combining design, functionality and excellent workmanship has resulted in this fantastic home. From the foundations, the precast con-

There has been a clear attention to detail throughout this project, with most features requiring and demonstrating an exceptional level of workmanship. This project was a tremendous collaboration between the owners, architects, builders and all other trades. Completed with great passion, this home is an outstanding result,” say House of the Year judges. ➤ For more information about the competition, visit www.houseoftheyear.co.nz.
