dog has been “smuggled out to freedom” from a multi-million dollar property in Mellons Bay. Rebecca Henwood, from Mellons Bay, on May 26 scaled the fence to the home to rescue a seven-year-old animal that she says was mistreated and sick. She told the Times she first noticed the dog more than a year ago. “I have been watching him for a long time,” Henwood said. “His caged life was behind some bushes. I could hear him but not really see him.” He appeared very skinny and seemed to be suffering from a skin condition. Henwood said on a social media post to a popular Facebook page a call was made to the SPCA with specific instructions on where he was located – at the back end of the property in a cage and chained near an off-leash dog park. She received a text from the SPCA saying the situation was essentially “all good”.

She later discovered that the SPCA went in the front gate and sighted a different dog “not matching the area or description and went ‘yep, all good’ ”. There were two dogs on the property – Paul, the sick dog, and his brother Smart, both adopted from the SPCA six years ago. The inspector had seen Smart, not Paul. Henwood decided to take action. “At that point people needed to know what the SPCA deemed okay,” she said. She disagreed with the SPCA declaring the dog and his living situation fine. She admits “there wasn’t much thinking involved” but that she “couldn’t leave him there no matter the consequences”. She intended to take photos as proof. When she climbed the fence to his enclosure he was incredibly happy to see her, wagging his tail and jumping up for pats. “He looked 14-years-old and was covered in sore, red and itchy skin with lumps and bumps and ring worm,” she said.

“He stunk like nothing I’ve smelled before.” Henwood was attempting to hide from the gardener on the mower, let the dog out while the man was driving away, and picked up “this rather large and very smelly dog over the fence”. A stranger – Rhianna Leigh Pollard – offered to foster the rescued dog, nicknamed Gil. The situation took another twist however. Gil escaped and was taken into the pound. The owners were contacted but did not get him. He was deemed in poor condition and put on death row. Pollard visited the owners and Gil was signed over to her and released to her by the pound. “He’s now enjoying life,” Henwood said. Media reported that a spokesperson for the family said they believed Pollard was a council worker when ownership was signed over. They previousy told media they felt unsafe in their home. The Times visited the home and attempted to speak to the family. The SPCA declined to comment.

On Saturday night (May 29) the Picton Centre in Howick came alive with the sound of amazing music and celebrations as the Manukau Concert Band celebrated 50 years of music-making in the Manukau community and further afield. The fact that some of the original members still play in the band, whilst others attended the concert, is testament to the sense of belonging that the band generates and nurtures amongst its members. In addition they treated the audience to a fabulous programme of inspiring music, including one piece Whaanau Overture by renowned New Zealand composer

School kids searched H

owick Intermediate School has apologised after a relief teacher checked the pockets and patted down a classroom of students. A parent of one of the children who wishes to remain unnamed said a substitute teacher “lined all the students of a class up, got them to close their eyes and patted down each of these students to search for some money which had been stolen from other students”. The teacher was searching for $10 and $15 that had allegedly been stolen from two children’s jackets. The incident occurred at around 3pm on Wednesday May 26. The parent said the teacher patted down the chest shirt pockets and pants pockets of both boys and girls in a composite class of year 7 and 8 students. “She found nothing,” the parent said. He said the teacher got them to close their eyes then she closed her own eyes. To make it worse, the par-

ent claimed, another teacher came in, saw what was occurring and told her she couldn’t do that. According to the parent, her reply was “that she could and continued to search the children”. “This is obviously a gross breach of the Education Act,” the parent said. “How do you know where you’re putting your hands on a child if you have your eyes closed?” The concerned parent said that the teacher was “back on the following day teaching another class”. “Most people find it unbelievable that she wasn’t stood down for any period of time for this to be sorted and further training given,” the parent said. The principal Sara Pickering confirmed to the Times that a relieving teacher did check the pockets of a class of students looking for lost property. “Unfortunately, this did breach our school policy and our expectations,” Pickering said. “We have reiterated this to the teacher concerned.”

Christabel wins Popstars! By ZOE GARDEN

After she was informed of the incident “we apologised to the class of students and assured them that it will not occur again,” Pickering said. She also spoke to a couple of parents who contacted her about the incident. On whether the relieving teacher has been let go or punished, Pickering said, “I cannot comment on an individual” but she confirms that “this will not be repeated”. The Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Police have confirmed they’ve had no reports of the incident. “We followed up with the school to see if they required any further support,” Katrina Casey, the Ministry of Education’s deputy secretary of sector enablement and support, said. “They are confident that the issue has been effectively managed and resolved.” Casey said the school has clear policies and procedures in place to respond to what occurred. “They addressed the concerns raised with them appropriately,” she said.

From high school drop-out to the winner of Popstars – Christabel Williams’ journey to reaching the stars has been inspiring and incredible. The 20-year-old Howick musician (pictured) was crowned winner of the popular televised singing competition on Wednesday night. She took home the $100,000 prize in front of an excited crowd. “I was pretty shocked,” Williams said. “It was the most intense feeling of freedom in my life.” A stand-out from the start of the show in April, Williams was chosen by Popstars panellists Kimbra, Nathan King and Vince Harder as the deserving winner after “careful consideration of her vocal ability, song-writing skills, stage presence, initial uptake of her brand-new single If You Ain’t Looking, and growth as an artist through the various challenges and industry workshops undertaken over the series,” TVNZ said. Williams’ challenges on the show centred on her troubles with ADHD and anxiety. As she previously told the Times, she has had issues with self-doubt over her performances and high expectations she puts upon herself. Kimbra said that she was grateful that Popstars showcased the troubles that musicians can have on their journeys. Williams agreed. “It’s nice that people can see the pressure that artists are under.” Despite the challenges she faced, Williams has expressed gratitude for the

show and the growth she’s achieved on her journey. “Popstars had helped me gain confidence in myself and music,” she said. Williams’ single If You Aint Looking< was topping the NZ iTunes charts at the time of her win. She hopes to explore her music in the future. “I don’t want to stick to one genre,” Williams said. “I want to try a lot of different things.” Her plans are to release new songs – including Ankle Deep that she performed on the show – and write an album “and maybe do a tour and shows”. She says her proudest moment was at the finals when everyone was singing her song back at her. She thinks her “turning point” that the judges raved about at the VIP showcase was due to how comfortable she was on stage, maintaining eye contact and interacting with the audience. Williams hopes her journey to pursue her passion and talent for music inspires others to “go and do what they want to do”. “I’m incredibly grateful for everything,” Williams said. “I don’t doubt myself this time.”

he man charged by police over the death of east Auckland schoolgirl Joanna Kong has pleaded guilty. The 77-year-old, whose name is suppressed, admitted a charge of careless driving causing death when he appeared in the Manukau District Court on May 28. He’s due back in court to be sentenced on July 27. Joanna was struck by a vehicle in a car park at Pigeon Mountain Primary School in Bucklands Beach on March 23. She was taken to Starship Hospital in a critical condition but died there with family by her side on March 28. Counties Manukau Police’s serious crash investigation unit was notified of the incident at the time and examined the scene. Police revealed on March 24 that a 77-year-old man had been forbidden to drive following the incident and said any further decisions around his eligibility for driving would be for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to make. Gabe Newell interacting and speaking to star-struck SMC students.

15 May 18 July 2021

Billionaire American gaming CEO Gabe Newell has appeared as a guest speaker at Sancta Maria College – an engagement kept under wraps by agreement. Senior digital students were inspired by Newell at a special assembly on May 20. Newell, or “Gaben,” is a cofounder of the American gaming and software company Valve Corporation. He’s currently living in New Zealand after having to lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic while visiting his family. In October it was reported he is applying for NZ residency. Digital Technologies teacher Joanne Al-Rubaie said she’d been

searching for a guest speaker for her students. On a whim, she reached out to Newell’s team but “didn’t really expect to hear back”. “When I was contacted I thought it was all a hoax,” Al-Rubaie said. At the special assembly, Newell spoke of the changing world in technology as well as the challenges of being an entrepreneur. A special Q&A panel allowed the students to ask questions about how Newell got into business and what he saw in store for the future of gaming. When it was finished, Newell came down the auditorium aisle and high-fived all the students. He stopped to engage with many of them and even took a selfie or two.

HOUSING

Ardern opens social housing development in Flat Bush By CHRIS HARROWELL

P

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern has officially opened a new social housing development built in east Auckland by Christian charity the Salvation Army. Ardern and Housing Minister Megan Woods visited the $18.6 million Chapel Road development, named Kaitiakitanga, on Thursday June 3. The complex includes 46 units, 36 of which are two-bedroom and 10 one-bedroom. It’s name is taken from the te reo Maori word kaitiaki (guardian). More than 100 people turned out to mark the development’s opening. Among those joining Ardern and Woods were mayor Phil Goff, Botany MP Christopher Luxon, Botany-based Labour list MP Naisi Chen and several Howick Local Board members. Ardern told the audience she wants every child and family “to have what I had – the simple act of stable, warm, and affordable housing”. “We have a big job to do in New Zealand. This crisis has been decades in the making. “There is no point standing here casting aspersions or blame. Instead

we need to look forward and focus on what we do next.” She outlined her Government’s changes to the housing sector, including extending the bright-line test, removing interest deductibility, banning letting fees and stopping rent increases more than once every 12 months. “We’re building houses as fast as we can – 18,000 public houses we are working hard to build. We’ve already built 7000. “I’m so pleased to be here on this particularly auspicious occasion to

see families today moving in, in the near future, to such fabulous houses and ultimately making them homes.” Goff said housing is the “bedrock of so many other things our lives depend on”. He said the children of parents who have to move houses because they don’t have secure accommodation never get a good start in life and education. “If you’ve got a family growing up in a damp and unhealthy home, that is going to affect their school-

ing and their work. “Housing really is the bedrock of what we have to provide.” Goff said when he arrived at the development he immediately thought they were homes people are going to be proud to live in. Salvation Army territorial commander, commissioner Mark Campbell, said the key message is not about housing, or people, “it’s about breaking the cycle of homelessness in New Zealand”. “Whether you’re in Government, or finance, or if you’re a supporter

or a donor, or our first nation people (Maori), we are all part of breaking the cycle of homelessness today. “We celebrate that today.” Woods says the development was delivered in partnership with the Government. While much of the operating funding was provided by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the project got off to a quick start with initial funding from the Salvation Army and an impact investment through the charity’s community bond, she says. “We’re seeking to address decades of under-funding of new housing stock and our public housing programme plays a key part in enabling more housing to be built. “We’re under no illusions about the size of the challenge, and the best way to address the growing demand is to bring on more quality housing at pace.” The Army says each home in the development is energy efficient, has family-centred design and is part of a complex that incorporates community facilities, chaplaincy support where needed and tenancy management. Residents will receive ongoing support designed to strengthen relationships and encourage close connections.

He will work alongside branch manager Steve Maserow, assisted by Sumwai Wong, in the Howick office on Picton Street. Paul has vast experience in all facets of real estate, having been a salesperson, manager, auctioneer and trainer, and he’s won consecutive REINZ awards for excellence in education. He’s also recognised as an approved provider of continuing professional development for the Real Estate Authority (REA). Paul was contemplating a new venture when Steve phoned him out of the blue, and Paul was impressed by what Barfoot & Thompson had to offer. The two real estate experts have combined to lead a formidable sales team that recently came third out of 70 Barfoot & Thompson offices.

Complete with a newly-renovated office, the future is looking exciting with a highly energised team of salespeople keen to serve the local market with facilities that are truly world-class. As Paul says, “I’ve been completing a degree in Applied Management and I was impressed to discover Barfoot & Thompson not only fulfilled, but surpassed all the criteria of a modern, fully equipped 21st century organisation in marketing, technology and client care ethics. “I can honestly say I would recommend Barfoot & Thompson to anybody thinking of selling property or sales people looking to work with the market leader right across Auckland.” Please pop in and say hello! News bites

Area’s top cop signs off By CHRIS HARROWELL

A

fter dedicating herself for seven years to preventing the people of east Auckland from falling victim to crime, inspector Wendy Spiller is moving on. And the man replacing her as Counties Manukau East Police area commander says he’s humbled, daunted, and excited by the challenge. Spiller is handing over the job to inspector Scott Gemmell, the former area prevention manager for Auckland City District Police and the officer in charge of the city’s armed offenders squad. Spiller is taking up a new role as director of the upcoming International Association of Women in Police annual conference, being hosted in Auckland in 2023. She’s stepping down as area commander as she wants to spend more time with her father and teenage daughter. “I approached the district commander [Superintendent Jill Rogers] to say I’ve had a fantastic tenure here, it’s time to move on and it’s an opportunity for someone else to come on,” Spiller told the Times. “I’ve done 33 years in the police and it’s time for someone else.” Spiller says she wants to thank the “hugely diverse and large” local community for supporting the

police during her tenure. “The growth I’ve seen in the last eight years has surpassed anything I would have imagined with new schools opening and houses being built. “I want to thank the community for supporting us. “Last year was a watershed for the world, not just for our patch. “We saw amazing kindness and support and a reduction in crime and victims, which is fantastic and it continued for months. “I asked the question of the community then and I ask it again, why can’t it be like that all the time? “It was so positive. Other places rebounded in the crime space but we didn’t, which was fantastic.” Spiller says the area is safer now than when she arrived in Counties

Manukau East, and that’s due to a total team effort. “It’s because of the work done by the neighbourhood policing teams, the youth aid teams, and road policing but also because of the community. “Unless the community owns their own safety, it doesn’t matter where you live or what socio-economic patch you’re in, if you don’t own it, that will quickly become unsafe.” Spiller says the area is “so lucky” to have Gemmell taking over from her, “with his experience, his passion, and his mana”. Gemmell has held numerous senior and leadership roles during his 18-year police career, including in Counties Manukau’s criminal investigation branch, which solves

serious and violent crime. He’s also been in charge of operations, which saw him overseeing the police response to large protests and rallies in Auckland’s CBD, as well as the police’s canine and maritime units, and Eagle helicopter. Gemmell says he wants his staff to be the best they can be and for every member of the local community to be prosperous and to “achieve everything they wish”. “My values are very much aligned with our [police’s] strategy and I add into there gratitude. “I’ve been given so much over my career and I’ve been trained and had friendships through the journey to get to where I am now. “I see an opportunity to be able to give back to our young staff coming through.” He says he feels “most fortunate” to have been recommended to take over from Spiller. “Following Wendy over the last couple of weeks and seeing everything, her team, the way she’s lead the Ormiston station, the people who work here, the community and the people I’ve met over the last few days, has been awesome. “I’m humbled when I meet people who devote their life to better outcomes for people and Wendy falls well within that category, as do many of our community leaders. “I sit here very humbled and daunted at the task but I’m excited.”

The Times ran a story in the last issue featuring the new general manager of the Pakuranga United Rugby Club, John East. Reference was made in a quote by John to “my stepmother” Madeleine East. She and her lawyer wish to make it clear that there is no relationship at all with John East. The Times apologises for any upset caused.

VACCINATIONS A BREEZE

We would like to thank Andrew Lister whose letter was recently published in the Times (Positive vaccination experience, May 25) in which he explained the steps he took to successfully navigate the confusion around obtaining a Covid-19 vaccine appointment, mentioning an 0800 number. Previously we had been told on another 0800 number that we had to wait until we were contacted before we could make an appointment even though we met the criteria. A friend driving past one of the vaccination centres noticed there was very little activity taking place so obviously there was some capacity. Upon reading Andrew’s letter we followed his example, ringing 0800282926. Our details were manually entered and we were quickly scheduled an appointment by phone, our details and appointment made and confirmed by text. Our first vaccine took place on June 2. We arrived 20 minutes before our appointment time, as had been suggested to us. There was some initial queuing on the road, followed by waiting in the carpark, until called, which was understandable given the volume of people going through the vaccination centre (1000 daily we learnt from our very efficient nurse). It was all done in an orderly man-

Friends of Mangemangeroa AGM There was an excellent attendance at the recent Friends of Mangemangeroa AGM. We heard from two special people. Guest speaker Lynn (Red) Paterson had a captive audience when showing her 5,800-kilometre solo kayaking adventure around New Zealand – Stewart Island included. Funds raised from her book Finding Solo go to a mental health awareness charity. A great presentation from a very brave and focused woman. The second highlight was to acknowledge the success of founding member Graham Fall in getting to the semi-finals of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year, Seniors Category. That success was based upon Graham’s lifetime of conservation works with contributions to omany groups including Forest & Bird Society and the Friends of ner with plenty of support workers to check appointment details, direct traffic and keep people informed. No drama llama. So thank you again Andrew and the Times for highlighting this information for readers and thanks also to the nurses and workers at the vaccination centre for their job well done during pretty inclement weather.

Yes, Mr Luxon, we are borrowing. All world leaders are doing the same. Some will increase the tax of highest-income earners. What about that! Better to borrow from the Reserve Bank, not international investors and banks. The interest paid remains in New Zealand. I recall your leader promised that she will cut the income tax if elected. HISTORY

Whistleblower of Howick D

ora Arnaboldi was a very brave trainee nurse at Auckland Hospital who was called “the New Zealander of the year” in 1891. She was the whistle-blower on the poor work of the medical superintendent Dr Floyd Collins for negligence in treating two patients who died. The Auckland Hospital Board (all men) censured nurse Arnaboldi without bothering to even listen to her story, instead “they swept the story under the carpet”. A reporter at the New Zealand Herald investigated her claims and published an editorial praising Nurse Arnaboldi. Other newspapers published her story and public support grew nation-wide. Margarita Dorothea Arnaboldi [called Dora] was born in Howick in 1855. The Arnaboldi family lived in Wellington Street where her father had a general store. She attended the Howick Catholic School. Her older brother Corporal Philip Arnaboldi was killed at Passchendaele in France during

World War I aged 20 years and his name is on the Stockade Hill monument. Initially Nurse Arnaboldi took her concerns to The Auckland Hospital Board who exonerated their medical superintendent and censured Miss Arnaboldi without hearing any evidence. But public demanded the full story. An inquiry was held in the Auckland City Customs House on February 9, 1891 with commissioners Sir Maurice O’Rorke and Dr Von Mirbach against Dr Collins claiming he committed errors of judgment deferring two amputations on two male patients with complaints by Miss Arnaboldi that “he was neglectful and unskilled”. A Member of the House of Representatives, Mr Rees, wished to appear on behalf of Miss Arnaboldi, giving legal assistance, without charge. On January 27, the Governor sent a telegram directing the hearing to be adjourned for a fortnight. It had attracted national interest for her so-called “lack of discipline”

by criticising her superiors in the hospital. She “blamed the system” more than the doctors, who denounced her as an “impertinent meddler and a mutinous ignoramus…”. After the Hospital Board hearing, Dr Collins was given a small cash hand out and Nurse Arnaboldi was given a bag of 45 gold sovereigns from the admiring public of Auckland and Waikato for showing Christian sympathy for patients in hospital. Her conduct was considered honourable and praiseworthy. During the hearing, it was revealed one patient had a crushed leg whose wounds were not dressed for 19 hours and, when his leg was amputated, the upper flap was left gangrenous according to other nurses in the hospital. There were other cases described by the nurses of similar neglect. The evidence was overwhelming. Nurse Arnaboldi resigned from her work in Auckland Hospital and in April 1895 opened a Private Nursing Home and Hospital with a Miss Bates in Grafton Road,

ANNIVERSARY called “Puriri” especially for invalid and convalescent recovery giving patients special and skilled attention. In August 1895, Nurse Arnaboldi opened a cottage hospital in Waihi where gold mining attracted many optimistic labouring families. She died in 1921 and is buried in the family grave in All Saints Churchyard opposite the Monterey apartments. Her family descendants still live in Howick. Her brave disclosure improved the standard of medical surgery and nursing in Auckland Hospital. Alan La Roche, MBE Howick Historian alanlaroche@xtra.co.nz

THEATRE

Pakuranga College presents Little Shop of Horrors By ROISIN LAMB Based on the 1960 dark comedy film, Little Shop of Horrors centres on a geeky florist shop worker who discovers that his exotic foundling plant has an appetite for human blood. When Pakuranga College’s production of this popular show opened on Wednesday May 26, it was evident from the outset that the production team had a plethora of talent at their fingertips. The impressive stage set features a charming flower shop and an ever-growing Venus fly trap. The plant is a character in itself, expertly controlled by puppeteer Natasha Munn. It’s voice, by turns cajoling and rude, is provided by Reuben Powell, whose dramatic skills proved more than up to the task of bringing the menacing ‘Audrey 2’ to life. A small, live band is situated to one side of the stage for the whole show and, led by the College’s Head of Music

Richard Breed, they didn’t miss a step. They didn’t overshadow the singers but complemented their sound and performed the bouncy ‘50s doo-wop rock score with skill. The show opens with a female trio who narrate the story. Dressed in metallic ’80s prom dresses, Crystal (Karla Naude), Ronnette (Ashlee Myers) and Chiffon (Ava Purvis) gave us colourful harmonies and sassy personality throughout the entire show. In fact, the show was awash with vocal talent. The angelic voice of Jessica Sayer (Audrey), put paid to any dry eyes in the audience, particularly during her beautiful rendition of Somewhere that’s green’. The emotion of this moment was further heightened by the accompanying duet performed by accomplished dancers Angelina Scott and Aleisha Moor. Carlos Norton’s Seymour would have been quite

at home in a professional theatre. His stage presence was superb and his mastery of the musical numbers on-point throughout the whole of the high-energy production. Norton’s duet ‘Mushnik and Son’ with Mason Neethling was a comedic highlight of the show, with plenty of slapstick and great comic timing from both actors, which had my 9-year-old son roaring with laughter. Felicity Dowden was an inspired piece of casting as Orin, Audrey’s sadistic dentist boyfriend. She took on the hit song You’ll be a Dentist and the physicality of the role effortlessly and was delightfully swaggering and maniacal. Each of the protagonists was wonderfully complemented by the ensemble cast, which ably kept up the energy and pace of the production, culminating in the rousing closing number Don’t feed the plants. Wise words indeed!

COMMENT

Walsh deserves Origin debut W

hile NZ Warriors coach Nathan Brown is concerned that State of Origin selection would be too tough for whizz kid Reece Walsh, who should deprive him of making $15,000 a game in the three-game series? About to turn 19 on Thursday, Reece has been a sensation since the Brisbane Broncos released him to the Warriors in April. As an attacker, be it at fullback or at No 6, he has vision, exceptional acceleration and the ability to beat defenders with a dummy, sidestep or swerve. With experts of the ilk of Wally ‘The King’ Lewis pushing for his selection in the Queensland State of Origin team it would be cruel to deny him the chance despite his youth and light 88kg frame. It should be remembered that All Black Damian McKenzie thrives on the biggest stages weighing a mere 81kg without every shirking the tough stuff. Admittedly a better tackler than Reece, their scintillating attack has much in common. Born in Australia to an indigenous father and a Maori birth mother, the left-footed Walsh

kicked six goals from six attempts in the 2019 State of Origin Under18 match and scored a try for Australian Schoolboys in their 36-20 win against the Junior Kiwis that same year. He cites his main reason for join-

ing the Warriors was to learn from Roger Tuivasa-Sheck who unselfishly moved to the wing to allow Walsh to develop his talent at fullback. Sadly, having been ravaged by injuries, especially that to 118kg

power prop Addin Fonua-Blake, the Warriors continue to lose more than they win. Despite that, Walsh has thrived with his elusive running and cut-out passes setting up tries. And no-one is more appreciative of his talent than former Dally M Medal winner Tuivasa-Sheck who is to switch codes and make an All Blacks bid by playing for the Blues next year. That’s a huge gamble given the calibre of fullbacks Beauden Barrett, Jordie Barrett, Damian McKenzie and Will Jordan present although Beauden has expressed his preference for the first-five test spot Richie Mo’unga holds. With young Zarn Sullivan also developing nicely at fullback, the Blues may be tempted to try Tuivasa-Sheck at centre or wing. Meanwhile the decision to allow cricketer Devon Conway to make his test debut at Lords against England has reaped its reward with a magnificent record-breaking 200 at a time when established stars Kane Williamson (13) and Ross Taylor (14) struggled. South Africa’s loss was New Zealand’s gain when Conway

Agnew’s Angle

with Ivan Agnew moved to Wellington three years ago and set the game alight for the Firebirds before starring for the Black Caps over the past summer in the shorter forms of the game. It wasn’t until two days before the Lords test that the 29-year-old knew he would make his test debut and he crowned the occasion in majestic fashion with his double century. He became the 12th New Zealander to score a century on test debut, the 14th overall to score one at Lords and he surpassed Sourav Ganguly’s record 131 by a test debutant on the same hallowed ground. In doing so he also surpassed captain Kane Williamson’s record 131 test debut outside New Zealand. In joining gutsy bowler Neil Wagner and soon-to-retire wicketkeeper BJ Watling, Conway is the third South African-born gold nugget to enrich the current Black Caps.
