iss Emilia Maude Nixon of Uxbridge Road, Howick, valued the recommendation of Lord Bledisloe, the former Governor-General of New Zealand, that we should follow the practice of open-air museums of Scandinavia by recording the history of Maori and pakeha in Aotearoa. In 1935 she developed the “Garden of Memories” honouring Ngai Tai and settlers of Owairoa [later called Howick] “to promote understanding, harmony and goodwill between all people.” Miss Nixon recognised the importance of The Treaty of Waitangi and that it was signed not far away by the Tamaki River. She wrote to the Mayor of Auckland City, Sir John Allum, who on March 4, 1953, unveiled a plaque at Karaka Bay commemorating the 17 Maori who signed the Treaty there on March 4, 1840. Another seven signed here on July 9, 1840. Most were Ngati Paoa or Hauraki but no Ngai Tai signed. William Fairburn, assisted by Rev Henry Williams and Captain Joseph Nias witnessed the signatures. The July group of signatures were witnessed by Captain Rough, harbour master; George Clarke, Protector of Aborigines and Dr John Johnson,

the Bay of Islands. Some Ngati Whatua travelled to the Bay of Islands to sign the treaty and sell 3000 acres of Auckland for the capital which also gave them protection. All those who signed the Treaty received two blankets and some tobacco. Auckland, in 1840, had a few tents and shelters but few Maori lived there. In Howick the son of missionary Archdeacon Maunsell , who had a copy of the Treaty, shared it with Miss Nixon which inspired her to recognise this important site. In February 1840, more than 200 copies of the Treaty were printed but only nine exist today. This was New Zealand’s founding document. Some Maori asked missionaries how the British in Australia treated Aborigines. More than 500 Maori Chiefs signed the Treaty but there were major differences in the Te Reo Maori language and English versions. Successive settler-dominated Governments ignored the Treaty. Those who defended their lands, refusing to sell, were attacked by military and more than three million acres confiscated with no payment to Maori. Miss Nixon recognised the grievances.

All of Howick was taken from Maori and not paid for. Eventually Maori grievances were recognised and in 1975 some compensation was made which continues today. The Government sold this land to pay for the roads and immigration of Fencible soldier-settlers to Auckland. Some compensation has been made with the Ngai Tai Treaty of Waitangi Settlement. Miss Nixon was a generous benefactor donating land for Nixon Centennial Park and for many community projects. Miss Nixon died in 1962 and bequeathed her home with threequarters of an acre as a public reserve, now the Emilia Maud Nixon Garden of Memories for the people of Howick. Her garden and homestead are administered by Auckland Council and the public may also arrange to visit Te Raukohekohe Museum or enrol at the Te Whare Wananga O Owairoa, both located in the grounds. Without her foresight we would not have such an understanding of the history of Howick. ➤ Alan La Roche, MBE Howick Historian alanlaroche@xtra.co.nz

O

n a beautiful sunny afternoon (January 31), Howick man, WWII air force hero Squadron Leader Keith Boles DFC, celebrated his 100th birthday at Bell House in Lloyd Elsmore Park. The occasion commenced with a fly past from Warbirds pilots as a tribute to Keith on his special day. As well as family and friends, officers from the RNZAF attended and his party opened with an announcement from Howick’s Town Crier Jim Donald. The former Mayor of Howick, Morrin Cooper, played Happy Birthday on his trumpet. Keith was in great form and thoroughly enjoyed his 100th birthday. 1. Patel in running for NZer of the Year ➤ From page 1 In 2013, when the Counties Manukau Police, concerned about an increase in family violence in the South Asian community, consulted the experienced provider of healthcare in high needs communities, a unique idea of a 24/7 emergency service was born. Partnering with New Zealand Police and Sahaayta Counselling services, Patel established the first Gandhi Nivas house in Otahuhu. Staffed 24/7 by counsellors, social workers and alcohol and drug counsellors, Gandhi Nivas provides early intervention and prevention services for New Zealand men identified at risk of committing harm. The innovative approach supports men to change their violent behaviour, reducing the likelihood of further family harm and increasing safety for families.

In their 12th year, the annual Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards celebrate Kiwis from all walks of life – those who inspire, give hope and lead across the six different Award categories: New Zealander of the Year; Young New Zealander of the Year; Senior New Zealander of the Year; New Zealand Innovator of the Year; New Zealand Community of the Year; New Zealand Local Hero. The Awards Office received a record number of nominations in 2020. Interestingly, a significant number of the nominations were for Dr Ashley Bloomfield, director-general of Health. However Bloomfield’s office responded saying that although humbled, he wished not to be considered for the award given his primary

role as a public servant. Three finalists will be announced for the six Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year categories on Monday, March 1, with the winners announced at the New Zealander of the Year Awards Gala Dinner in Auckland on Wednesday, March 31. Previous winners of the New Zealander of the Year award are: Jennifer Te Atamira Ward-Lealand (2020), Mike King (2019), Kristine Bartlett (2018), Taika Waititi (2017), Richie McCaw (2016), Sir Stephen Tindall (2015), Dr Lance O’Sullivan (2014), Dame Anne Salmond (2013), Sir Richard Taylor (2012), Sir Paul Callaghan (2011) and Sir Ray Avery (2010)

New Zealand Community Trust awarded a number of grants in the Auckland region in January including one local one. NZCT granted Bucklands Beach Association Football Club $13,000 to cover salary. Among the many Auckland gaming venues to have contributed to the grants were the Barrel Inn in Cook Street, Howick and the Celsius Barin Ormiston Road, Flat Bush.

COMMENT

Happy New Year Let’s talk to all local What a beautiful summer we are having. The board’s workshops have recommenced, and board members have enjoyed attending local events over the past few weeks. These include family events in local parks which are part of Auckland Council’s summer parks activation programme; and a get-together for elderly residents from local Haumaru Housing villages.

FREE EVENTS

Look out for pop-up ‘Junk Play’ events at Macleans Park. These will occur over three Saturdays February 13, 20 and 27 between 9am and 1 pm, and incorporate repurposing junk into resources for learning, creating an environment where children can play, invent and discover while promoting a cultural shift towards Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Families are welcome to come along, join in, have fun, and appreciate the benefit encouraging free play has on our children. Auckland Council’s ‘Movies in Parks’ team is bringing two movies to Howick. This Friday, February 12, you can enjoy ‘Footloose’ at Barry Curtis Park. You can arrive from 6.30 pm and perhaps enjoy a picnic tea until the movie commences at 8.30 pm. Bring the little ones to Lloyd Elsmore Park to see ‘Frozen 2.’

with Adele White This family favourite will show on Friday March 26 at 7.50 pm. Arrive from 5.30 pm and enjoy pre-movie entertainment and a bite to eat. ‘Frozen’ costumes welcomed! Our popular “Kiwi Anthems In the Park” is on Sunday March 14 in Llyod Elsmore Park. Jordan Luck Band, AutoMatic80s, and Ekko Park are returning for another free Music in Parks concert, 2pm until 6pm.

PUMP TRACK

Later in February we will see the arrival of a pump track in Nixon Park, Howick. This is a temporary installation, designed to provide a fun activity for young people of all ages over the summer months. It will be located on the rear car park at the lower end of the park and is suitable for bikes, scooters and skateboards.

SEEKING WATER

Exploration is underway to locate aquifer in Lloyd Elsmore Park. Council is ultimately hoping to provide water to users of the park by constructing water bores. The Local Board supports this great initiative at this time of water shortage. ➤ Adele White, Chairperson, Howick Local Board

wo Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies students – Whitford’s Gayle Lee and Mt Wellington’s Jessica Vea – have been chosen as one of six finalists in the Global Lexus Design Awards competition. Their concept Heartfelt, showcases creativity, innovation, empathy, and design skills that were adapted to a Covid-19 world and developed as part of the local Lexus New Zealand design awards, run in conjunction with AUT’s Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies. As finalists, Jessica and Gayle will receive US$25,000 ($34,803) to complete their prototype for Heartfelt and participate virtually in a workshop with one-onone mentoring from world class design professionals. The Lexus Design Award competition works with a world-class panel of influential judges and the young Kiwi women behind Heartfelt have been chosen – along with five others – from more than 2000 international entries from 66 countries to compete for the Grand Prix trophy in April.

There was also a second Kiwi entry that got through by Henry Glogau, who has dual New Zealand and Austrian citizenship and currently resides in Denmark. His entry, Solar Destination Skylight, is a device that uses seawater to create natural diffused light, drinking water and leftover salt for energy creation. Andrew Davis, Lexus New Zealand general manager, recognises that having three Kiwi designers in the global top six is a huge achievement – as well as for aspiring, young Kiwi designers across the country. “Not only does the presence of clever Kiwi design at the International Lexus Design Award competition inspire up-and-coming talent - it works to raise the profile of New Zealand designers in a competitive market,” he says. “Across all the finalists you can see an urgency to the problems being addressed by the designers, with a huge focus on humanity in relation to the changing climate and global pandemic.” NZ-born Gayle grew up in east Auckland and attended Our Lady Star of the Sea in Howick and Sancta Maria College. “I

am now AUT, where I am pursuing my Masters in Creative Technologies. I’ve gravitated towards design as I’ve always been curious about how things worked and how they could be improved. I used to do Hard Materials throughout high school and really enjoyed it so that was a factor as well. She and Jessica became friends at University as they are doing the same degree. “Through our various projects, we found we worked well together and so teamed up to create ‘Heartfelt’,” said Gayle. “Due to Covid-19, we were unable to go ahead with our original AUT project plans in semester one, so we decided to revise our project to be more Covid-related. Our new idea came about when a family friend

passed away and the funeral had to be live-streamed. “We couldn’t hug at the time and we really missed those hugs – hugs are comforting and warm. We thought, is there a way we can replicate the comfort of a hug while being socially distanced?” Firstly, they broke down what a hug meant to them – warmth, presence and personal connection, and then based the functions of ‘Heartfelt’ off that. It was just a happy accident that the heart shape was also comfortable to hold and was intuitive as people knew where to place their hands. “It was simple and that’s what we wanted, especially if our target audience was the elderly,” said Gayle. “Our device works in pairs, so as person one holds their device in their hands, person two’s device will warm to the temperature of person one. If not being held, the heart will drop to room temperature (neutral). “There will also be lights that will pulse to reflect both you and your loved one’s heartbeat, imitating the effect of holding their hands where your breathing and heart rate will eventually sync.”

uay Gallery is a longestablished name in the New Zealand art industry representing Kiwi artists for more than 15 years. Based originally in Ahuriri Quay in Napier before moving to Hastings Street, the gallery has an incredible history in offering New Zealand artists a place from which to present and promote their art. In 2020, Quay Gallery owners thought it time to retire, the lease on the Napier Gallery was up and there were things to move on with. It was at this time that Nicki and Grant Richards, Howick locals, decided to fulfil a dream of one day of owning an art gallery. Quay Gallery presented the ideal opportunity and now, just months later, Quay Art Gallery will hold its first Exhibition in Auckland at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick – a fitting

Aroha Funerals Takanini: helping families to honour their loved ones

ADVERTORIAL SC4128A

There is an instant sense of serenity and deep comfort that envelopes you like a warm blanket on a cold winter night as you step into the newly-built, spacious Aroha Funerals located at 23 A Tironui Rd, Takanini, A soothing, feminine touch is a standout as one walks into a well-designed lounge with two meeting areas that could be cordoned off for privacy if need be. The meeting area leads to a spacious viewing room which again is flexible and multifunctional. Saying a final goodbye to a loved one is one of the hardest things in life, which is why it is important to have support from funeral directors who are compassionate, committed, professional and sensitive to the bereaved family’s requirements. “It’s not your standard job,” says Janet Mikkelsen who started Aroha Funerals (earlier known as State of Grace East) seven years ago at Mt Wellington. “With a nursing background, Janet worked in paediatric oncology and spent the last seven years of her nursing career in palliative care, looking

after children who were going to die. “I was quite drained after a while and wanted to use my experience in a field where I could continue to look after people,” she says on her switch in career. “The wonderful thing about this job is that you get to be kind to people all the time. While there are hundreds of people at a funeral that all silently want to help, it is a nice feeling to know we can actually help.” Interestingly, they had their first knock on the door even before the final finishing touches to the brand new funeral home in Takanini were complete. Funeral director Robyn Watson was contacted by a family that had dealt earlier with the branch of Aroha funerals at Ellerslie-Panmure Highway. Whilst hesitant initially to bring them to unfinished premises, they said their deceased dad was a builder and would have loved the fact that there was still some building materials around. It is easy to tell that there is something about Aroha Funerals that definitely sets it apart.

From left to right: Lynda Casey, Janet Mikkelsen and Robyn Watson in one of the meeting areas of the lounge. Times photo Wayne Martin It’s not uncommon for people to be shocked when they see an all-women team of funeral directors expertly handle every personalised detail from making all the arrangements that involve catering, florists, priests, celebrants—to looking after the body of the deceased, lifting the coffin and even driving the hearse.

“We have a team of people who are family-focussed, warm, genuine, professional, flexible and strong,” Janet says. “A funeral is unlike any other event; it has to encapsulate so much, in such a short period of time to honour our loved ones in a way that reflects who they were in life. Death and dying is a very emotional and sig-

nificant time for loved ones.” Robyn adds, “We are also ecofriendly with sustainable caskets and we prefer to take care of the deceased body naturally. Instead of embalming the body we keep it cool in a cooling room and keep them looking good, including the skin and colour. We’ve done around 200 funerals in the last year and did embalming for only six people – mainly because the body was travelling to another country. “We also encourage family members to wash and dress their loved ones.” The new funeral home that provides bespoke service in Takanini caters to clients in Beachlands, Papakura, Maraetai, Whitford, Pukekohe, Kawakawa, Bombay, Waiuku and everywhere in between, helping families to honour their loved ones and farewell them in a very special way. Boost for water supply

A

new water treatment plant in Papakura will help boost Auckland’s water supply by six million litres a day when it goes live today. The project is part of Watercare’s drought response and is being built in two stages on the site of the old Papakura Water Treatment Plant, which has been largely demolished. The total cost of reinstating the supply from the Otuwairoa/Hays Creek Dam, which includes the construction of a new water treatment plant and significant upgrades to Watercare’s water distribution system, is $68 million. The project delivery has been staged to make sure the supply can be reinstated as quickly as possible. Stage one included the construction of a temporary treatment plant and the replacement of the

Papakura No 2 watermain from the treatment plant to the intersection of Hunua and Dominion Roads, which will become operational today after only six months of design, consenting and construction. The temporary plant treats water from the Otuwairoa/Hays Creek Dam which has been out of service for the past 15 years. The second stage will be a permanent treatment plant, which is already under way and expected to be completed by the end of the year. When it is finished, it will be one of the most advanced water treatment plants in the country. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says, “This project will increase the resilience of Auckland’s water supply, boosting Auckland’s capacity initially by six million litres a day and later up to 12 million litres a day.

“It’s one of several significant upgrades to Auckland’s water infrastructure we’ve made as part of our $224 million investment programme to increase water supply for Aucklanders. “With increasingly dry summers in recent years and the impact of climate change, this investment is critical to ensuring the resilience and reliability of Auckland’s water supply.” Watercare head of operations excellence Priyan Perera says most of the stage one plant is designed to be relocated, so things like tanks, vessels, pumps and equipment can be moved to the stage two site as part of the new plant to minimise waste and overall project cost. Some parts of the temporary treatment plant will become part of Watercare’s mobile water treatment systems fleet

FOOTBALL

Bazeley joins Fencibles United

F

encibles United have announced Darren Bazeley as the new technical director at Fencible United, in a part-time role alongside his New Zealand Football (NZF) roles. Bazeley has an extensive footballing background both as a player and a coach and he was lured back to New Zealand from his professional coaching role at the Newcastle Jets to take up roles with NZF as All Whites assistant coach and head coach of the men’s U20. Prior to his Newcastle position he was the assistant coach at the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer. Bazeley has been involved in 72 New Zealand international games, coached at five World Cups with the U17 and U20 national teams and he holds a UEFA A Licence. Also in his playing career he played for Watford and Wolves in

England. As part of the first steps, Bazeley will be working closely with the board and Martin Rodwell (Fencibles United’s new director of football) to understand the key drivers in the club’s transformation. Vice chairman Ian Davies (Taffy) said, “He will then lead the delivery of these pivotal areas through the club. “We are very fortunate to have obtained such a high level of football experience and expertise with Darren. “The work/direction he will set out for the club will come through at all the levels at the club, from our juniors to the senior 1st team. “The club is in a very exciting place at the moment and has a buzz about it which hasn’t been seen for a while. The future is very bright at Fencibles United for this community-based club.”

FESTIVAL

The return of 45th Polyfest The ASB Polyfest, Auckland Secondary Schools Maori and Pacific Islands Cultural Festival, is back. The largest Maori and Pacific Island festival in the world will be held from April 14-17. The iconic festival will celebrate its 45th anniversary this year – after it was put on hold last year due to the initial Covid-19 outbreak, which banned large events. The 2020 event was cancelled two days before the opening powhiri, causing a significant financial loss for festival organisers. After spending a great deal of last year focussing on a financial rescue package to cover this loss, the Polyfest Trust announced that the festival will return in 2021 with revised dates and format. In announcing the festival, chair of the Polyfest Trust, Robert Solomone said, “Like many events

Botany Downs Secondary College students with PM Jacinda Ardern at Polyfest 2018. Photo supplied

in 2020, our ASB Polyfest was cancelled as a result of the Covid19 pandemic, and in the interest of the health and safety of our Polyfest students, schools, stallholders, stakeholders and supporting communities. “This was the second consecutive year our event was cancelled, and a time to reflect on the learnings of the past two years. It was also an opportunity to consider new possibilities for future Polyfest events.” “We will operate four stages

instead of six, combining the Pacific Island and Diversity stages which will have two days allocated to each, while the Maori stage will take place over four days. “We will hold this year’s event during the last week of Term 1. The venue will be the same,” he said. The Manukau Sports Bowl will come back to life, with the colour and culture of the ASB Polyfest. The revised festival layout allows more space for stallholders to spread out, and social distancing for attendees.

The countdown is on to the nation’s most prestigious and competitive polo event, the BMW NZ Polo Open, to be held Sunday February 21 at the Auckland Polo Club in Clevedon. The NZ Polo Open in its 44th year is renowned as a summer highlight on New Zealand’s sporting and social calendar. Event director Lucy Ainsley is confident this year’s NZ Polo Open will be one of the best yet. “We have six very competitive polo teams contesting the trophy which will make for an exciting final to watch and we have plenty of side-line entertainment too.” The stylish Fashion at the Polo competition is back and

Sad fate for Humpty Dumpty challenger

Agnew’s Angle

I

couldn’t stop hearing the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine song ringing in my head when American Magic’s Patriot capsized on the Waitemata Habour waters during their fateful Prada Cup campaign. Despite the best efforts of their rivals to keep the boat afloat, the end result was the same as Humpty Dumpty’s when all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again. Actually they did get Patriot afloat but helmsman Dean Barker’s boat and crew couldn’t match the wizardry of Jimmy Spithill’s Luna Rossa in the battle to decide who faced the British in the Prada Cup final. One has to feel sorry for the personable Barker who, like the British, has yet to win an America’s Cup. That includes two losses as the helmsman of Team NZ in 2003 and 2013, the latter when losing 9-8 to Spithill’s Oracle after leading 8-1. Now we eagerly await the shootout between Luna Rossa and Britannia to decide which one challenges Team New Zealand’s Te Rehutai (Sea Spray) for the Auld Mug. If the racing emulates the last clash between the pair, when the

lead changed nine times before Sir Ben Ainslie’s Britannia triumphed narrowly, then we are in for some real excitement. The sharper the contest and the racing experience gained by both crews in high speed, high risk AC75 hydrofoil monohulls, the greater their advantage over the idle

defending champions who won the World Series earlier. With the benefit of extra racing, Ainslie and Spithill have sharpened their starts far greater than what we had seen from Te Rehutai’s Peter Burling earlier. Despite the fact most pundits believed Te Rehutai had supe-

rior speed, its best of 49.1 knots was inferior to Britannia’s 50.25 and Patriot’s 53.31 during racing. However weather conditions obviously had a bearing on those figures. With three great helmsmen in Ainslie, Spithill and Burling, stability is going to play as big a part as

sailing finesse and boat speed. Meanwhile it looks likely charismatic NZ Warriors captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will switch codes in 2022 in pursuit of an All Blacks jersey before the 2023 Rugby World Cup. As talented as he is, it is a huge gamble when one considers the competition for fullback and wing that already exists between Beauden and Jordie Barrett, Damian McKenzie, Caleb Clarke, George Bridge, Sevu Reece and Will Jordan. That will make Tuivasa-Sheck the eighth challenger for one of three positions against seven who have much more experience in the 15-man game. The league star is noted for his strength, courage and snappy sidestep but seldom punts the ball and could have difficulty positioning himself at fullback for the kicks he can expect to field in union. Meanwhile the Warriors will have big hopes of him playing a major role in their bid to make this year’s NRL play-offs. He’s a champion in a team that has struggled for success through no fault of his own. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

Howick Pak clinches T20 championship H

owick Pakuranga Cricket Club has won the Premier Men’s Honda Financial Premiership T20 Championship against East Coast Bays. East Coast Bays 154/6 (R Harrison 54) lost to Howick Pakuranga 155/5 (D Grobbelaar 51, B Walsh 43) by five wickets. The final, at Lloyd Elsmore Park at the weekend, saw Bays win the toss and bat first. Bays made a confident start despite losing both Cole Briggs and Ryan Schierhout (28) in the powerplay. Schierhout’s knock included a four and two sixes to get the visitors moving in the early exchanges. The knock of significance came from all-rounder Ryan Harrison (54), who held the remainder of the Bays innings together. While Seb Langridge and Campbell Knowles finished the innings off nicely, both sides would have been pleased with their efforts during the first innings.

For Howick Pakuranga, Taine Jolley finished with figures of 2-19 bowling some of the tough overs, while Donovan Grobbelaar put four steady overs beside his name. Chasing 155, Daniel Young (26) wasted little time in taking on the Bays’ bowlers, hitting three fours and a six inside the

first three overs. The match-winning partnership followed with Grobbelaar (51) joining Bill Walsh for 63 runs. The blitz included Grobbelaar powering five boundaries in a pressure-relieving eight ball period. Bays stayed in the contest with the wicket of Grobbelaar

before Walsh (41) hit a pair of sixes in a 17-run 15th over. Though Phil Mecredy struck twice with a handful of runs to get, Andrew Morrison (27*) and Adam Jones were on hand to hit the winning runs and secure Howick Pakuranga’s third T20 Championship.
