hree criminal trials with links to east Auckland are set to be held during 2022. The first is scheduled to begin on March 7 at the Auckland High Court and is expected to take four weeks. It will see two men accused of murdering Wiremu Arapo, 27, who died following a fire at his Cockle Bay home in late 2020, defend the charge. Police arrested and charged Greg Hart and Sean
Andrew Hayde with Arapo’s murder following the fatal house fire in Minerva Terrace on October 20. Counties Manukau Police initially said that after liaising with NZ Fire and Emergency investigators, they were not treating the fire as suspicious and would refer Arapo’s death to the coroner. eople considering standing as candidates in this year’s Auckland Council elections should start preparing. The elections for positions on the council and Howick Local Board are scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 8. The Howick ward has two seats on the council and there are nine seats on the local board up for grabs, with three elected members representing each of the board’s three subdivisions of Howick, Pakuranga, and Botany. Council elections are staged every three years and conducted by postal vote. Howick Local Board chairwoman Adele White encourages locals to consider putting themselves forward for election to the council or local board. “The Howick ward is large and diverse,” she told the Times. “Our local board needs to be representative of its people to give a broad and democratic approach to local government decision-making. “It’s an ever-growing role requiring time, flexibility and commitment, but is able to bring pleasure, satisfaction, and wonderful connections to our communities.”

depending on how many votes the candidate receives. The council says candidates do not need any special qualifications and “come from all backgrounds and walks of life”. To be effective they need to have skills such as decision-making and strategic thinking, communication and community engagement and relationship building and collaboration. Lack of knowledge about the candidates and their views is consistently reported as one of the main reasons people don’t vote in local elections, the council says. “To run a successful campaign, candidates need to let local residents know the key issues you stand for within the community.” Tips that may be helpful for connecting with voters and getting more votes include using social

Restaurant identified as close contact, student tests positive
The fight’s begun – dog’s death launches petition By ZOE GARDEN

pit bull’s controversial euthanasia has led an animal rescue organisation to spearhead a petition to abolish breed-specific legislation (BSL). Woody was picked up in traffic by police officers and taken to Manukau Animal Shelter on January 18. He was found to have no microchip or registration. Janine Hinton, co-founder of Saving Hope Foundation, claims that the officers, who are not identified, were horrified that Woody would be put down in seven days if not collected by his owner. “I instantly broke down in tears,” the officer wrote on the ‘Justice for Woody’ Facebook group. “My colleague and I were distraught.” Animal Management manager Elly Waitoa told the Times he was identified as being a pit bull type by experienced shelter staff. “Under the Dog Control Act, we have a responsibility to hold dogs that are found without an owner for seven days,” she says. “We tried to locate its owner by checking lost dog reports and putting out messages on the Auckland Council impounded animal Facebook page.” Saving Hope, who have foster
families in east Auckland, repeatedly posted Woody’s picture and information on their social media during his time in the shelter. They also offered to take the dog themselves. Several individuals reportedly came forward to claim the dog was theirs. One man, Jesse Thompson, thought the dog could be his brother’s dog or one he had sold from a litter. “While a number of people came forward, under investigation the claims were found to be false,” Waitoa says. “Those who came forward were without evidence and could not provide details such as the dog’s name or age.” Woody was euthanised on January 27. “While it is never our first choice to euthanise an animal and is not a decision that is made lightly, we are required to follow the Dog Control Act which automatically classifies dogs that are wholly or predominantly made up of these breeds as menacing, no matter how they behave individually,” Waitoa says. This refers to the Breed-Specific Legislation in the Act which prohibits or significantly limits the possession of dogs basely solely upon their breed or type. This applies to American Pit Bull terri-

ers, Brazilian Fila, Japaense Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Pere de Presa Canario. Woody’s euthanisation caused a flood of outrage and disbelief on social media. Hinton was equally devastated. “It breaks my heart,” Hinton says. “It was the straw that broke the camel’s back.” Waitoa says that they understand “this has been an upsetting incident”. “We empthasise with those involved,” she says. “We ask that pet owners please ensure their animals are microchipped and registered so that incidents such

Court trial looms for accused ➤ From page 1 been launched and asked for people with information to contact police. On December 8, Bolton announced police had arrested two 32-year-old men and charged them with Arapo’s murder. The pair eventually appeared in the Auckland High Court where they pleaded not guilty to the charge. Set to defend a murder charge also is Fang Sun, who police arrested and charged over the
violent 2020 killing of Pakuranga businesswoman Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong. Zhong, 55, was found dead inside her Land Rover vehicle on November 28 while it was parked in Roadley Avenue, Sunnyhills, a short distance from her three-storey Suzetta Place home. year involves donations made to New Zealand’s two largest political parties. The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) charged disgraced former Independent Botany MP JamiLee Ross and businessmen Yikun Zhang, Shijia Zheng, and Hengjia Zhen in January 2020 over two large donations made to the National Party in June 2017 and June 2018. The four men pleaded not guilty to the charges in February 2020. The Crown alleges the donations were split into smaller amounts so the identity of the donor or donors was not disclosed in the National Party’s annual return of party donations.
Ross, Zhang, and Shijia Zheng each face two charges of obtaining by deception. Hengjia Zheng faces one charge of obtaining by deception and one charge of providing false or misleading information. The Crimes Act 1961 states the charge of obtaining by deception carries a punishment of up to three years in prison. A ruling by Auckland High Court Justice Ian Gault late last year granted an application by the SFO to combine the case with one involving donations made to the Labour Party in one single trial. It’s set to begin on July 25 and is expected to take 10 weeks.

as these do not occur.” Saving Hope has launched a petition, ‘Justice for Woody’, to have BSL ended for all pit bull breeds. “We wish to encourage local councils and the NZ government to abolish BSL, which has recently resulted in a loving, healthy ‘pit bull’ being put to sleep in Auckland after numerous attempts from fellow rescuers to save him,” the petition states. It currently has 3574 signatures. The ‘Justice for Woody’ Facebook group has 6.1k members. “We have to make a change in NZ. The fight’s begun,” Hinton says. “They’re not qualified to go what’s a pit bull and what’s not. It’s the owner, not the dog. Any dog can bite.” SPCA also advocates for the removal of this legislation. Saving Hope currently has a lawyer and barrister working for them on the petition. The petition, Hinton says, has to be worded “absolutely perfectly” so when it goes to the government it won’t be “thrown out”. On February 4 Anita, Hinton’s daughter, met Green MP Chlöe Swarbrick to discuss the situation. “Chlöe would love to support our cause and take our petition to parliament,” Anita wrote on social media.
The Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday named an east Auckland restaurant as a close-contact location of interest for six separate days. And a student at Pakuranga College has tested positive. Gorkha Eastern Beach Indian Restaurant in Eastern Beach has been listed for January 28 (Fri), January 29 (Sat), January 30 (Sun), January 31 (Mon), February 1 (Tues) and February 2 (Wed) from 11.30am-10pm for the same time period on each day, all as close-contacts. The MoH advises anyone that visited during these listed days and times to self-isolate, test immediately and on day 5 after exposure at this location. Further isolation and testing requirements will be provided by Public Health. Record your visit online or call Healthline so contact tracers can get in touch. Meanwhile, a Pakuranga College student has tested positive for Covid-19. Whether it is Omicron is currently unknown. The student is selfisolating after attending the school last Wednesday and Thursday, media outlet Stuff reports. Pakuranga College will remain open after no closecontacts have been identified.

COUNCIL
Campaigners fuming over sudden move on hearings By CHRIS HARROWELL
P
eople fighting the proposed sale of east Auckland public reserves are angry they now won’t be able to express their view over an important step in the legal process in person. Auckland Council voted in late 2020 to dispose of 83 properties it owns across the city in an effort to raise money from “asset recycling”. Among the properties it wants to sell are public reserves at 9R Fortyfoot Lane, Sunnyhills; 111R Golfland Dr, Botany; 76R Aberfeldy Ave; Pakuranga; 72R Karaka Rd, Beachlands; and part of the site of a gas station at 2R Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga.
Council agency Eke Panuku Development Auckland is managing the properties’ sale. For sites classified as reserves under the Reserves Act 1977, a statutory process must be followed before they can be sold. The council publicly notified and sought submissions on its intent to revoke the reserve status of 20 properties across Auckland in February last year. More than 1340 submissions were received, of which 1145 related to the properties in east Auckland. None were in favour of the properties’ reserve status being revoked. In mid-2021 Eke Panuku asked the council’s regulatory committee to appoint six independent commis-
sioners to consider submissions about revoking the properties’ reserve status. The commissioners will make recommendations to be reported to a council committee for a decision on whether to forward requests for reserve revocations to the Minister of Conservation for final approval. Hearings for in-person submissions on the east Auckland properties had been scheduled to take place in Cockle Bay but have been repeatedly delayed due to Covid-19 lockdowns. On February 2, submitters were informed the hearings will now not be heard inperson and will instead be conducted via the internet, landline or mobile phone. “With the much more

infectious variant Omicron now in the community, all participants’ health and safety is of the utmost importance,” the council told submitters. “For that reason, it is no longer feasible to hold the hearing in a face-to-face situation.” Among those who oppose the in-person hearings being scrapped are local residents Rashna Tata and Michelle Varga. They belong to a group fighting to stop their local public reserve in Aberfeldy Avenue from being sold.
Tata and Varga emailed the council on behalf of their Save Aberfeldy Ave Reserve group to express their unhappiness at the change to the hearings process. “We wish to retain an in-person hearing format, even if the hearing must be delayed again to a later date,” they wrote. Tata says: “We have waited so long and it is absolutely not acceptable that after so many postponements, you [the council] have suddenly chosen to change the very nature of
this meeting. “We strongly urge Auckland Council to rethink this decision.” Howick ward councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young voted against the sale of the east Auckland public reserves. Stewart says the submitters should be heard in person. “Our neighbourhood reserves are really important, especially now that we are having wall-to-wall three-storey houses being built in many parts of our community.”

COMMUNITY
Police close to finding new home By CHRIS HARROWELL

Counties Manukau East Police are searching for a replacement for the building occupied by Howick Police as the property will soon be sold. Times photo Wayne Martin
announced the six community officers would remain in Howick. The move followed a vocal campaign by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Botany MP and National Party leader Christopher Luxon to stop the property from being sold, or have it subdivided, so the community officers could stay in Howick. About 200 concerned locals turned out to a public meeting held
on the issue in Howick in May last year. Gemmell now says good progress is being made in finding a new permanent location for the six Howick-based community officers. “We are vacating our current Moore Street site on February 11 as Auckland Council needs to move through the sales process for the property,” he told the Times.
“We have viewed several locations within close proximity of the Moore Street site and we will provide further details as soon as we are in a position to do so.” Gemmell says there will be a “short period” where the Howickbased staff will deploy to jobs from the Ormiston Road station while the new site is prepared. “We will have a number of things to do before the staff can

olice say they’re making good progress in finding a new building to permanently house the six Howick-based community officers. The building currently serving as the Howick police station will close this Friday, February 11. Its staff will work from the Counties Manukau East Police headquarters in Ormiston Road, Flat Bush, in the meantime while a new base in Howick is finalised. Auckland Council is selling the property it owns at 34 Moore Street, which contains the portable building that serves as the Howick police station, accessed from Fencible Drive. Council organisation Eke Panuku Development Auckland is managing the property’s sale. Police previously said when the property is sold, the six Howickbased officers would from then on be based at the Ormiston Road station. But police changed course late last year when Counties Manukau East Police area commander, inspector Scott Gemmell, publicly
move into a new premises, which will include putting up adequate fencing and security measures, signage, and installing a front counter. “While the staff will deploy from Ormiston station they will continue working in Howick and remain visible to the community. “We look forward to providing a further update around our new site once negotiations are confirmed. “Counties Manukau Police is committed to remaining in the Howick area and we thank the community for their patience while we transition into a new location.” Brown and Luxon said in late 2021 they’re pleased police are actively looking for a new location in Howick village to serve as a base for the six community officers. “Our local community constables do an excellent job supporting locals affected by crime, preventing crime from taking place and providing a strong local presence in our community,” they said. “Having them based in Howick is critical to ensuring east Auckland residents not only are safe, but feel safe.”

Auckland’s top transport priority should be a second harbour crossing T
1
Simeon Brown Bridge is damaged, and the impact it has when this bridge can’t be used. It’s clear the Government is less interested in proper long-term planning for Auckland and instead cares more about saving face as a result of a campaign pledge from 2017. The problem with this is that Aucklanders are the ones who will end up footing the bill, with things like the Regional Fuel Tax and inevitable rates increases to cover budget blowouts continuing to hit us in the pocket. Aucklanders are reasonable people and want to see their money invested in transport projects which help to grow our city, give us better connections, improved access to public transport as well as building the roads we need to keep people moving around our city such as the East West Link and Mill Road. If National is elected back to Government next year, we will scrap this light rail project, focus on

he Government’s recently announced proposal to spend more than $14 billion building light rail between the Auckland CBD and Auckland Airport is a colossal waste of money that won’t serve the needs of the commuters it would be built for. Since Labour took power in 2017, they’ve gone round and round on light rail after promising to deliver something by 2021, only to have ended up with more metres of press release issued than any actual light rail. Not only is $14b a lot of money for something that won’t benefit the majority of Aucklanders, but it’s also highly likely to see large cost overruns with some estimates indicating that it could be up to $24b. The number one priority for Auckland right now should be a second harbour crossing. The existing harbour bridge is ageing and is at capacity meaning an additional harbour crossing will be needed sooner rather than later. A second harbour crossing would ensure resilience in the transport network at one of New Zealand’s most critical points. We have already seen what happens when the Auckland Harbour

Government unveils income insurance scheme for workers C
onsultation is under way on the creation of a Government programme intended to help Kiwis who lose their jobs. Finance Minister Grant Robertson says the New Zealand Income Insurance Scheme is being jointly designed with Business NZ and the Council of Trade Unions (CTU). But the proposal is being criticised by Botany MP and National Party leader Christopher Luxon, who says it’s a new tax that will make families worse off. Robertson says workers who are made redundant, laid off, or who have to stop working due to a health condition or disability, would receive 80 per cent of their usual salary for up to seven months, up to the current ACC cap. The proposal includes up to 12 months of support for retraining. It’s to be funded by levies on wages and salaries, with workers and employers paying an estimated 1.39 per cent each. Workers will be eligible after six months of levy contributions in the previous 18 months. “As New Zealand moves beyond the economic and social impacts of Covid-19, there are important les-
sons to be learned from the way we were able to support one another through an unprecedented series of challenges,” Robertson says. “During Covid-19, the Government protected livelihoods with the wage subsidy scheme and resurgence support payment. “We think it’s time for an enduring solution. “Our proposed scheme provides economic security to individuals directly, and supports them to transition into a good new job, as opposed to economic support packages which keep people in their existing job even if that role is no longer viable.” CTU president Richard Wagstaff says the scheme will provide a financial cushion to workers left without a job through no fault of their own. “A New Zealand Income Insurance scheme would give people the time and financial security to find a good, new job that matches their skills or to rehabilitate or retrain. “With a tight labour market and demand for skilled workers, it is in the best interests of workers and businesses that people are employed in areas that make the greatest use of their skills.”

key workers, simply because a vacancy wasn’t available in the few weeks a worker was looking for work.” Luxon says the scheme is a “jobs tax” that will make people worse off and it could not come at a worse time. “National has big concerns that Grant Robertson’s new unemployment insurance will make the cost-of-living crisis even worse. “It’s a new tax, reducing incomes at a time when, with high inflation, businesses and workers can’t afford it. “Small businesses have been struggling just to keep the doors open over the last two years. “Now, just when Kiwis deserve some relief, the Government wants to hit workers and businesses with a brand new tax to fund a new gold-plated unemployment benefit.” Luxon says the scheme should be scrapped. “The Government should just call this what it is, a jobs tax, and then they should abandon it.” ➤ People can have their say on the proposed scheme before April 26 by going online to www. mbie.govt.nz/incomeinsurance.

Cannabis summit goes virtual
Luxon ‘turning ship around’
By ZOE GARDEN
N
ew Zealand’s largest medicinal cannabis summit is set to run virtually this month. More than 30 international and local speakers will present at MedCan Summit 2022 on February 10 and 11 including scientists, medical experts, clinicians, entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers. A dedicated one-day Healthcare Professional Forum with endorsements from The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and The Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand will also be featured. MedCan Summit is described as bringing “a solid foundation of scientific understanding for the advancement of medicinal cannabis industry, and health professionals”. The upcoming summit is organised by NZTech and BioTechNZ - a “non-for-profit member-ship funded organisation with the goal of maximising”. “So many people have been looking forward to it,” Dr Zahra Champion, executive director of BioTech NZ and MedCan organiser, says. “The safety of the MedCan attendees, speakers, sponsors and staff is our top priority.”
If New Zealand was in orange, the summit would’ve been held at Auckland’s Cordis hotel. Champion says that they are committed to hosting a highly interactive virtual event. “It enables attendees to watch live sessions and access on-demand content. Attendees can engage with summit speakers through questions and polls, join the roundtables, view the exhibition virtually and book one-on-one meetings with other attendees and sponsors,” she says. MedCan’s foundation sponsor, East Tamaki-based Helius Therapeutics, is delighted the occasion will become virtual. “It’s a very important time for the sector,” Carmen Doran, chief executive of Helius, says. On the first morning of the summit, Doran is set to discuss, amongst other local cannabis leaders, ‘The state of play of NZ’s medicinal cannabis industry and beyond’ on a CEO panel. Other key discussions include Doran talking with Auckland University of Technology (AUT) medicinal cannabis expert Associate Professor Ali Seyfoddin about finding, attracting and retaining talent in the industry. announced a partnership with Seyfoddin which will see it working with AUT doctoral students, researching and developing medicinal cannabis products. “MedCan 2022 provides a unique opportunity to strengthen connections, and for GPs to grow their knowledge about this new and exciting frontier of care,” Doran says.

n the first Newshub-Reid Research poll for 2022, Labour is still riding its pandemic popularity wave, while the tide is going out for Act, half of its supporters have sailed away – many of them back to a Luxon-led National party. Labour is up 1.6 percentage points – to 44.3 per cent in the latest Newshub Reid-Research poll. National has bounced back into the 30s, up 4.4 points to 31.3 per cent. But the biggest loser in this poll is the Act party, which has plummeted eight percentage points to 8 per cent. Those voters appear to have returned to National, Labour and even the Greens – up 2.4 points to 9.6 per cent. In the first Newshub ReidResearch poll with Botany MP Christopher Luxon (right) at the helm, National’s new leader is resonating with voters on the right. He’s the preferred Prime Minister with 17.8 per cent of respondents, up 15.3 percentage points from his results in Newshub’s last poll when Judith Collins was still leader. Jacinda Ardern is still the strong favourite – 43.3 per cent of voters prefer her as Prime Minister, up 1.6 points.
Newshub’s political editor, Jenna Lynch, says: “Despite a shocker start to the year with the arrival of Omicron, the government is still riding its pandemic popularity wave. The border announcement this week has likely saved Labour from what could have been a very different poll result. “Christopher Luxon seems to have turned the Titanic around for National. Centre right voters are heading home from their fling with the Act party.”

Valentine’s Day
Three reasons why long-term couples should celebrate Valentine’s Day Those who think that Valentine’s Day is just for new couples are definitely mistaken.
P
eople in long-term relationships have just as much to gain from a day dedicated to celebrating their love. Read on to explore three reasons why Valentine’s Day is meant for all couples, old and new. 1. TO SHAKE THINGS UP
Long-time couples tend to fall into a routine, returning to the same spots over and over or simply staying home most of the time. This Valentine’s Day, dare to be different. Step out of your comfort zone and discover what your region has to offer. A little novelty is never a bad thing!
2. TO NURTURE YOUR BOND When is the last time you told your significant other how he or she makes you feel? Take advantage of Valentine’s Day to express just how much you appreciate your sweetheart. Remember, it’s the little things that make relationships last.
Give your Valentine a heartfelt card, an engraved piece of jewellery or even an original poem as a token of your lasting love. Think outside the box. 3. TO REKINDLE THE FLAME As the years go by, those secret looks, winks, cuddles, kisses, massages and similar intimate
gestures can become increasingly scarce in long-term relationships. You’re both aware that you should put more effort into seducing each other – and Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to dress up, hit the town with your sweetheart and watch the sparks fly.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO ALL YOUR SENSES! to a concert date to excite your eardrums while you celebrate your love. 3. TOUCH Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to stock up on kisses, cuddles and hugs. Wear fabrics like leather, vinyl, lace, silk, satin and velvet two create a tantalizing tactile experience. 4. SMELL Surround yourself with the heady, alluring aromas of massage oils and candles, or enjoy a nice long soak in a scented bubble

Confusion over board member’s email use By CHRIS HARROWELL
A
Howick Local Board member says his access to his official Auckland Council email address has been “restricted” in what he’s calling “censorship” of his views. But it turns out all is not as it seems. Board member Bob Wichman was recently told the email group that includes all Auckland ward councillors “only accepts messages from people on its allowed sender list, and your email address isn’t on the list”. He says he received the message after sending an email to mayor Phil Goff, all of the city’s councillors and the chief executives of the council and Auckland Transport (AT) asking the proposed route of the Eastern Busway that would see it go through Burswood be scrapped. Wichman wants that option canned due to the “wasteful expenditure of hundreds of millions of dollars and unnecessary confiscation of sixty residential properties”, he told the email’s recipients. on the busway’s next stage from Pakuranga to Botany is ongoing and AT is expected to release more details in the coming months. Despite the claims of censorship, council local board service general manager Louise Mason says no restrictions have been placed on Wichman’s council email account.
“He is not on the permitted senders list for the ‘all councillors group’ which he included in his email regarding the Eastern Busway,” she says. “Subsequently, member Wichman received an automatic response advising him that his email was not able to be sent to that list.” It’s not the first time Wichman has drawn attention
to the use of his council email account. In May last year the Times reported he was warned his access to official emails may be restricted after he sent an email on the Covid-19 pandemic to all of the city’s local board members. In it he detailed what he said he’d seen on the TV news broadcast the previous night, including that if someone gets vaccinated against Covid they can still get the virus but they won’t die, and millions of people who caught Covid were not vaccinated and did not die. “I believe we have been fed a lot of rubbish,” he wrote. Following Wichman’s group email on Covid last year, Mason said he’d been told his email was “ill-advised”. “We also reminded him it’s best practice to use an Auckland Council email address for council business only. Further options the council have is to remove individual access to sending group emails. “The member has been advised this privilege could be removed if further emails like this are sent.”
End of MIQ the right thing to do says Luxon The reopening of our border is welcome news for millions of New Zealanders offshore and at home, Opposition Leader Christopher Luxon says. “National has been calling for the Government to end the lottery of human misery that is MIQ and we are pleased that New Zealanders offshore now have some light at the end of the tunnel,” the Botany MP says. “Today’s (Thursday, February 3) announcement is a victory for the 100,000 people who signed National’s petition to end MIQ and the one million Kiwis around the world who, for the last two years, have been blocked from coming home to their family and friends.” He said it was also good news for businesses and workplaces that rely on New Zealand being open to the world so that they can get the critical workers they need into the country. “I know there will be people who will be sceptical or nervous that the Government might not keep to these dates, so National will hold them to account and ensure they stick to these commitments,” Luxon says. “We know that MIQ no longer makes sense so it’s right that it should come to an end. “The last two years haven’t been easy for anyone, and it’s been especially rough on Kiwis forced to enter a lottery to enter their own country. “I look forward to seeing those grounded Kiwis walking off those planes from the end of February and reuniting with loved ones here in New Zealand that they’ve missed for so long.”

MP: We’re being fleeced at petrol pump by Govt A
ucklanders will be angered to learn that despite paying over half a billion dollars in Regional Fuel Tax (RFT), less than half of that money has actually been spent on transport projects in our city, National’s Transport spokesperson Simeon Brown says. “Despite $515 million being raised by the petrol tax, only $230m has actually been spent on transport projects, showing what a sham this tax was right from the start,” Brown said in a media release. “Aucklanders were told by the Government and Mayor [Phil] Goff that this tax was desperately needed to fund projects which would help ease the congestion Aucklanders battle each and every day. “Instead, the tax revenue is simply being hoarded for projects which might be delivered some time in the distant future. “With a failed $51m attempt to build an overwhelmingly unpopular Auckland cycle bridge, four years of non-delivery on the Auckland light rail project and cancelled roads like the Mill Road and East-West Link projects, Aucklanders will be scratching their heads as to why they’re paying this tax when nothing is being done to improve our transport network. “The Regional Fuel Tax should be scrapped given the revenue isn’t being used. This will also benefit Aucklanders who are hurting from the cost of rapidlyincreasing fuel prices and high inflation. “Auckland Council and the Government should be funding projects which are actually going to be delivered, rather than constantly dreaming up new ways to take money out of the hands of taxpayers and motorists.” Meanwhile Transport Minister

WHERE TO GO FOR SUPPORT AND FREE ADVICE
Michael Wood told the Times it was disappointing that Brown would rather make political attacks rather than acknowledge the hard work of our construction sector and the jobs created to support the area’s economic recovery. “Simeon Brown knows that the regional fuel tax has meant important projects like the Eastern Busway could get started in our previous term in government. He was even at the opening of the Panmure to Pakuranga section at the end of last year, which is benefiting his constituents and would not have been built under National,” Wood said.
“It’s also important to point out that as more RFT projects come into the construction phase, more revenue will be spent. When you’re collecting revenue for projects at a steady rate but your costs start small, then rise, you naturally have a surplus in the first few years to pay for later years. “On the radio the other day (National Party MP) Mark Mitchell also said that National would reduce fuel excise levy. National is saying they would reduce transport funding on one hand, but indicating they will build many new large motorway projects. It just doesn’t add up.”

Vikki Kingsley Jones’s passion has always been real estate. Now, with her combined love for people, she’s turning her passion into a reality – helping her clients successfully navigate the property market. Vikki emigrated 25 years ago from Wales. She purchased her own home within the first three months of moving to NZ. She worked for her father, Phil Kinglsey Jones who was All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu’s manager, sorting mail and running the former New Zealand rugby union player’s website. Her industry connections she procured from these years are an asset to her clients. After she finished up with Number 11 Management (11 was Lomu’s rugby jersey number), she worked for a promotional company selling merchandise. “My children then became independent,” Vikki says. “I thought I would do a job I had always wanted to do.” Vikki was a flight attendant for 14 years with Air New Zealand. Her experience with a variety of different people strengthening her excellent people skills. “Some would call me the ‘inflight entertainment,” Vikki says. The emergence of Covid-19 caused her to make a drastic career shift. From a suggestion of her father some years beforehand, Vikki sought to turn her dream into a viable vision. In July 2021, Vikki began her first step in her career as a real estate agent for Bayleys. Thanks to her rich life experiences, she can relate to people from all walks of life. “I’m passionate about people,” Vikki says. “I have a great sense of humour.” Her natural and keen eye for detail for interior design has enabled her to see the potential in houses and property. This helps guide her

The current difficulties faced by the arts community during the pandemic have been well publicised. Artists and audience have suffered a dearth of events. Amongst these has been the popular concert series Thursdays @ Seven held regularly at All Saints Church, Howick. Concert coordinators, Katharine & Peter Watts have reluctantly had to postpone the Autumn Series due to start on February 24, but in its place they are offering a new experience for music lovers: a series of investigations into the mysteries of music presented online via Zoom. Turning Points in Western Music will be presented by well-known musician Peter Watts and will highlight crucial moments that changed the course of Western music. These sessions will take place on Thursdays 7pm-8pm. Anyone interested in participating is welcome to contact Katharine and Peter at watts@wattsandwatts.co.nz for further details.

NO MAN CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS
The proposed Auckland Light Rail Route Map (left); Auckland Light Rail visual of Sandringham Station. Photo/image supplied
Is light rail right for us? The editor of the Herald mentions Sydney, Tokyo and Hong Kong’s super-efficient light rail systems as role models. What he fails to mention is these are cities of 8 million-plus population and therefore can afford it. Auckland barely makes two million and can’t. Furthermore, because of the hell-on-earth high rise dwellings
BUILDING AND SHAPING A CITY The Government last month announced it was bringing Auckland’s transport infrastructure “into the future” by moving forward with an additional Waitematā Harbour crossing, progressing light rail from Auckland’s CBD to the airport, and creating a linked-up rapid transport network as part of a 30-year plan. It said it was future-proofing Auckland transport infrastructure. Key decisions on additional Waitematā Harbour crossing to be brought forward to 2023, to integrate with light rail and
the council is creating for its citizens, the regional tax and living here is no longer affordable. One in three Aucklanders is considering, and in fact, already leaving it. On top of that, within 30 years because of rising seas, Auckland Airport runways will be well and truly under water. What then?

with new rapid transit to the North Shore and North West ➤ Govt selects partiallytunnelled light rail from Auckland CBD-Airport, becoming the spine of Auckland’s future transport network ➤ Selected light rail option will see transport available every five minutes from some 18 stops, cutting travel times from CBD to Airport in half for many ➤ Accelerating our economic recovery with the creation of up to 97,000 new jobs, and 66,000 homes by 2051 ➤ Business support package to be developed alongside affected businesses
I can only speak for myself, but if (Opposition Leader, Botany MP) Mr (Christopher) Luxon is unwilling to operate with an absolute commitment to truth, which he puts above himself, his party, corporate interests, international treaty, and even the people, then he should quit now. We cannot survive another Prime Minister who tolerates dishonesty in themselves, their colleagues or the people. We can’t afford another slick P.R.ime Minister who views that office as a prerequisite for a grander future UN or corporate posting; another egotistical hireling whose sentimental fib to ‘make a difference’ puts outside agendas above their own country. It is our government and media, supported by social-media censorship and private foundations spouting nonsense, that are crushing our nation’s spirit, not Covid. Mr Luxon should know better than most that, ‘no man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other...’. And if he will not defend us and the public honour of the faith he professes, by giving his countrymen the unvarnished truth about the current political, judicial, financial and moral insurrection, then he is deceiving himself about who he thinks he is and what he thinks he can do for the rest of us.

Sea slugs wash up on beach at Mellons Bay
A
warning has been sounded by locals after sea slugs washed up on an east Auckland beach. A woman on a popular social media group posted pictures and information on the sea slugs on January 30. “Beware – we have sea slugs at Mellons Bay,” she wrote. “Unfortunately, we have an abundance of sea slugs wash up on our beautiful beach today.” The woman and several others picked up dozens of the slugs that were mainly found among the sea weed. They are described as slimy and are an olive green colour. When squeezed, she says, a purple toxin is squirted out. “Please be careful, especially if you have puppies or dogs that are inquisitive and lick or eat things,” she says. Dr Tarn Drylie, a senior coastal ecologist, of the Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU) told the Times that she could not confidently identify the species from the photos alone. “The markings and colours between individuals of the same species can vary substantially,” Drylie says. “I would cautiously say this indi-

vidual does look like Bursatella leachii.” Bursatella leachiii, or the ragged sea hare/shaggy sea hare, is a species of large sea slug or sea hare. They are commonly found in tropical waters and often have bright metallic blue spots on a brown ragged body. Bursatella may release a bluepurple ink into the water when stressed. Graham Trail, a veterinarian surgeon at Bucklands Beach Veterinary Clinic, says that the species is not toxic as they are different from the sea slug that contains neurotoxin. “I would not recommend allowing dogs to eat them as a mild gastrointestinal upset can result when anything unusual is eaten,” he says. Sasha Nowell, the practice owner and veterinarian at Pakuranga Vet Clinic, confirms that the species are non-toxic. “Only the pleurobranchaaea maculata species carry the toxin,” she says. The pleurobranchaea maculata, Drylie says, are grey-sided gilled sea slugs that are highly poisonous. Auckland Council advises that any sea slugs on beaches

Howick Fun Walk & Run falls victim to Covid The increasingly popular Howick Fun Walk & Run community event scheduled for Sunday March 27 has fallen victim to Covid. Howick Rotary, who organises the event in March every year, were considering whether holding the event would be possible with the many school children who participate probably only partly through their vaccination programmes. They chose to be cautious. The event looked like it would need to be cancelled because of the children’s vaccination position, with Omicron in the community and the move to red under the traffic light sys-

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
