rogress may finally be in sight for fed-up east Auckland residents plagued by speeding motorists.

As the Times previously reported, people living in Cockle Bay are demanding action to address the long-standing problem of mainly young men driving at excessive speeds and performing burnouts on local roads.

About 75 people turned out to a public meeting at Cockle Bay School on July 27 to discuss the issue with resident Danny Wright, Botany MP Christopher Luxon, and Auckland Transport manager Melanie Alexander.

Counties Manukau East Police were invited to attend the meeting also but declined.

Luxon said the officers based at Howick police station are “awesome” but it was “disappointing and frustrating” police did not attend.

Wright said people have talked about the problem for years “with little to no action” and residents want something to be done.

He suggested actions including erecting signs stating certain areas

are monitored, installing cameras, increasing the lighting at Shelly Beach Parade and reducing that road’s speed limit from 50kmh to 20kmh.

Speed bumps or chicanes could be installed on the road, and a bylaw could be introduced to ban loitering at Cockle Bay Beach, he said. “We all have phones and can take down [vehicle] registration plates, take photos of the drivers and keep them on file.

“We could ask police for a single point of contact for this. It’s been a long-standing issue for decades and not much has been done about it.

“We’re demanding action from the authorities and we’ll help as a community and do what we can.”

One resident suggested taking vehicles from the drivers who are causing the problem. “Police are hamstrung,” he said. “They’re bound by all sorts of red tape.

“What we have to do is have sentences and discipline introduced to deter these people. They’re spending a fortune on these cars so take them off them for three months.

“Do something that affects their wallet and their ability to go out and do this sort of behaviour.” ➤ Turn to page 10

Water levels in Auckland dams have nudged over 60 per cent capacity, the highest since February.

The region’s population has been closely watching personal water consumption for more than a year now after the worst drought in history early last year with below average rainfall following a very dry 2019.

In May 2020, storage in the Hunua Ranges and Waitakere Ranges dams were at 44.5 per cent, more than 30 per cent below usual levels.

Auckland had to rely on taking more water from the Waikato River pipeline and imposing restrictions to minimise water usage.

Yesterday, Watercare reported 11.5mm had fallen in the Hunua Ranges on Sunday (45mm in the past seven days) with 9.5mm falling in the Waitakere Ranges (46.5mm in past seven days).

Dam storage levels yesterday hit 61.28 per cent compared to the normal 85.5 per cent for this time of year.

Watercare improvements programme manager, Anin Nama told the Times the last time we were at a similar level was towards the end of February 2021 (58.78 per cent).

“This is standard for the yearly water cycle; we expect the dams to draw down over late summer to autumn and then start to replenish over winter and into spring, which is what we’re experiencing now,” said Nama.

This is helped by the addition of the new sources we’ve been able to bring on, like our Waikato 50 water treatment plant and the Pukekohe Aquifer. The extent of the dams’ recovery will also depend on the rainfall that we experience over the next few months.”

Nama said forecasts suggest they’re likely to receive normal to drier-than-normal conditions over August.

Meanwhile water consumption in Auckland is well below target with Sunday’s water consumption at 377 million litres (seven day rolling average 393m litres). The target for August is 410m litres or less a day.

School apologises to expelled student who swore at teacher M

acleans College has been directed by the Chief Ombudsman to apologise to a student the school expelled for swearing at a teacher.

The Ombudsman, in a finding issued in May, says the Macleans board decision to expel the unnamed student on the basis of gross misconduct was not justified.

The student had been expelled after telling a teacher to “f*** off” in an argument over an iPad, according to one media report. The school was approached for comment.

The student was expelled after an incident at the college in September 2019.

The Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier found the family was not given the full opportunity to respond to the allegation, and the board of trustees’ minutes did not show how the decision was arrived at.

He found the board acted unreasonably. He recommended the board apologise to the student and family and amend its records to confirm the student should not have been expelled.

away from him. The student was on an Individualised Education Plan and he required the device for his school work.

After the family complained about the process, the board conceded that the family was not provided with all relevant information 48 hours prior to the suspension hearing, as required. In addition, the student had been directed by the school to omit some informa-

tion when providing his statement of response.

However, the board believed that these two issues would not have changed on its decision. The family also expressed concern that nothing had been done for the student in relation to pastoral care or counselling.

The board acknowledged that more could have been done to support the student. However, the

board confirmed its view that the student’s conduct met the statutory threshold of gross misconduct.

It said it did not pursue other disciplinary options as the student was not remorseful and it considered that further misconduct was likely.

The Chief Ombudsman investigated whether the board followed a reasonable process in relation to all matters connected to the suspension hearing and whether the deci-

sion to expel had been reasonable.

The Chief Ombudsman was ultimately not satisfied that the incident met the threshold for gross misconduct under section 17 of the Education Act. Boshier noted that the Ministry of Education Guidelines require a high threshold for gross misconduct, and such conduct must be serious enough to justify removing the student from school. The board maintained that the behaviour constituted gross misconduct on the basis of its standards.

In this case, the Chief Ombudsman considered that the board had overstated the harm of the student remaining at the school. The student’s behaviour was not ‘reprehensible to a high degree’.

Boshier accepted that the behaviour required a robust response. However, he considered that there were a large number of alternative actions that the School could have considered.

The Chief Ombudsman recommended that board apologise to the student and his family and amend the record to show that the student should not have been expelled.

In response, the board confirmed that it had complied with the recommendations.

SFO silent on exMPs donations trial adjournment T

he Serious Fraud Office (SFO) is declining to comment on why the criminal trial of the four men accused in the National Party donations case is not going ahead in September as previously scheduled.

A staff member at the Auckland High Court told the Times on August 3 the trial has been adjourned and no future date for it to begin has been set.

Disgraced former Independent Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and his fellow co-accused Yikun Zhang, Shijia Zheng, and Hengjia Zheng were set to go on trial at the High Court on September 6.

The SFO laid charges against Ross and the three businessmen in January 2020 over two large donations made to the National Party.

A donation of $100,000 was made in June 2017 and one of $100,050 in June 2018.

The Crown alleges the two donations were split into smaller amounts so the identity of the donor or donors was not disclosed

Hengjia Zheng faces one charge of obtaining by deception and one charge of providing false or misleading information.

The Crimes Act 1961 states the charge of obtaining by deception carries a punishment of up to three years in prison.

The four defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges in February 2020.

The SFO’s prosecution is being led by barrister Paul Wicks QC assisted by John Dixon QC. Ross is represented by defence lawyers Ron Mansfield QC and Hannah Stuart.

The legal saga began in late 2018 during Ross’s falling out with, and subsequent expulsion from, the National Party.

He accused then-party leader Simon Bridges of breaching the Electoral Act in relation to a large

On October 15, 2018, Ross wrote on the social media platform Twitter: “When I started to become expendable, I confronted him [Bridges] with evidence that I had recorded him discussing with me unlawful activity that he was involved in.

“Working on his instruction, he asked me to do things with election donations that broke the law.”

The next day, on October 16, Ross published photos on Twitter he said were taken at a fundraiser on May 21, 2018, where Bridges was allegedly offered the $100,000 donation.

“He [Bridges] called me later that evening with instructions to collect the funds,” Ross wrote.

Bridges said Ross should take the allegations to police, which he subsequently did in October 2018.

Bajwa’s poem takes top prize Gurmehar Bajwa, a year 12 student at Ormiston Senior College, has won The Kate Edger Charitable Trust 2021 competition, What Brings You Joy? with his poem entry Mudita.

The judges were really impressed with Gurmehar’s “emotionally driven, yet still formally well-structured” poem, that “captured the essence of joy, and left the reader feeling uplifted and engaged”.

Sarah McLeay and Katrina Ford from the Kate Edger Charitable Trust went along to

Ormiston Senior College to meet Gurmehar and present him with his $1000 prize and certificate.

This is the fourth year the competition has been offered to year 12 and 13 students in Auckland and Northland.

In 1877, Kate Edger became the first woman in New Zealand to gain a university degree.

She was a great supporter of the Suffrage Movement and advocated strongly for women to use the vote to bring about change and improvement in society.

t sounds like the Government may finally be waking up to the massive public opposition to their planned $785 million cycle bridge across the Waitemata Harbour.

Since it was announced at the start of June, myself, Aucklanders and, in fact, Kiwis across the country have been strident in their objection to such a ridiculous use of transport funding.

From a prioritisation point-ofview, the project is unfathomable.

Touted as a tourist attraction – and begging the question of how many overseas tourists will be arriving here and cycling the bridge in droves – the projected patronage, according to the Prime Minister, would be at most around 3000 people a day. Assuming that people choose an alternative mode of transport in pouring rain, it’s safe to say that number is an optimistic guess for a sunny day.

Compare 3000 people a day to the projected benefit of a completed Eastern Busway, which would connect 30,000 east Aucklanders each day to education and employment. More funding from central government would enable Auckland Transport to reprioritise the delayed Busway and the next

stage, from Pakuranga to Botany, would cost just a fraction more at $860 million than the cycle bridge but provide a significantly greater benefit.

Even beyond east Auckland, think of the bang for your buck that you could get with $785 million directed towards other priorities. It would pay for 26 new bridges in Ashburton. The town actually only needs one – estimated to cost around $30 million – yet they are still waiting. Transport Minister Michael Wood announced Auckland’s cycle bridge only a day after inspecting the damage caused by torrential flooding that isolated Ashburton and temporarily severed the South Island.

Now, a mere 60-odd days later, it’s becoming clear that the cycle bridge is dead in the water.

Michael Wood and several of his senior colleagues including Grant Robertson, Chris Hipkins and Andrew Little have been hammering the nails into its coffin, giving equivocal answers about changing priorities and saying the bridge is “what we intend to proceed with at this stage” – shorthand for “it’s DOA”.

I’ll make my prediction now in the pages of the Times: soon

Christopher Luxon enough, we’ll hear that the cycle bridge has been reprioritised, rescoped or otherwise rejected.

At the time of writing, news website BusinessDesk has revealed that Michael Wood will soon receive advice on converting a lane on the existing Harbour Bridge into a walking and cycling lane – indicating the separate bike bridge will quite likely be put on ice.

I suspect the change of tack has come from polling that showed 81 per cent of people oppose the project. We need to get on and build the projects and infrastructure that the Labour Government has shelved, like Mill Road, and properly build a second Auckland Harbour crossing as National proposed at the last election. Dinner club seeks members

he Howick Women’s Dinner Club is seeking new members for their monthly dinner and entertainment evenings.

On the second Wednesday of every month the club meets at Howick Bowling Club to mingle, engage in conversation, eat the buffet, drink and enjoy the guest speaker.

The diverse group of women – from lawyers and doctors to housewives and teachers – meet at 6.30pm for drinks, eat at 7pm and listen to the speaker at 8.30pm before parting ways at 9.30pm.

Val Williams, the president, says there are a wide variety of speakers.

“We’ve had Dame Susan Devoy, the squash player, and New Zealand’s Race Relations Commissioner,” Williams says.

They’ve also had a nurse who has worked in Saudi Arabia, Ross Pinkham and a handwriting expert.

n East Tamaki company has gained New Zealand’s first licence to manufacture cannabis medicines.

The medicinal cannabis company has been issued with the industry’s first GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) Licence to Manufacture Medicines by Medsafe.

This allows Helius to be the first to manufacture locallymade medicines for New Zealand patients.

“This is our most significant milestone yet,” Carmen Doran, chief executive of Helius, said.

“Helius can move forward to manufacturing high-quality, affordable Kiwi-made medicinal cannabis products.”

Through an international recognition scheme, MedSafe’s latest approval also meets European standards, known as EU-GMP, opening future export possibilities for the privatelyowned Kiwi company.

Doran said the journey’s been exhaustive, but “rightly so, we’re making medicine”.

Wallace says the GMP Licence certification covers a wide scope from facility design to the training of people.

Medsafe assessed and approved Helius’s manufacturing, packaging, labelling, testing, storage and distribution process.

The GMP audits will ensure that its high standards are maintained.

Each new manufacturing process type will trigger a new audit.

Helius acknowledged recent commentary that the country’s medicinal cannabis regulations are too hard and it’s taking too long for locally-made products to be approved.

“We totally get it,” Doran said.

“There’s no time to rest until New Zealand patients have more treatment options.”

She said they are motivated and committed to improving their patients’ quality of life.

“It’s been a tremendous effort,” she said.

“We’re all incredibly proud.”

Maraetai Coastguard aids in fire rescue

A man’s yacht caught fire near Panmure marina after an electrical issue on July 25.

The Maraetai Coastguard’s MR1 was tied up besides Lion Foundation Rescue in Wharf Bay, where the crew heard a distress call over the VHF radio.

Within 12 minutes, the MR1 was picking up fire crew at Panmure Yacht club and taking them to the 40ft (12.2m) ferrocement yacht on a mooring a few hundred metres away.

Media reported that prior to the entrance of Maraetai Coastguard; the man was desperately trying to save his boat by transporting firefighters to it in his dinghy.

Maraetai Coast Guard skipper Kerry Johnson remembers that the man “had already gotten one firefighter across from the yacht club”.

“The other two were doing what they could to control the fire.”

The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes.

Once the smoke and steam disappeared, the crew pumped out the water.

“Having not used our fire pump on a real fire before, it was great to see that it truly works.”

The man living onboard had cut through a small electrical twin core that was live and not fused.

“Within four seconds, he had smoke and a fire in his electrical locker.”

He then called 111 as he had no fire extinguisher. Johnson said if the yacht was wooden or fibreglass, it would have sunk.

The outside hull temperature reached 130 degrees and large areas of paint had peeled off.

Backing our rainbow community Labour List MP

he Government recently announced it was introducing the Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill that will ban conversion therapy. The landmark legislation will stop a practice that has perpetuated discrimination and abuse towards the rainbow community.

As Minister Kris Faafoi said, conversion practices have no place in modern New Zealand.

Research has identified the practice causes severe depression and anxiety, alienation and an increased risk of substance abuse and suicide.

There is never any justification for trying to force someone to change their sexuality or gender identity. These are not things that need to be ‘fixed’. The law change will codify the already widespread rejection of this practice among health professionals, religious leaders and human rights advocates.

Importantly, the Bill introduces both a criminal offence for serious cases and a civil redress scheme through the Human Rights Review Tribunal.

But this Bill is just one part of the work needed to stop the oppression and discrimination experienced by rainbow communities.

I believe east Auckland is a community where we can celebrate our diversity – both in terms of ethnicity or age, but also sexuality and gender.

We already have incredible community advocates who are leading the charge. Earlier this year, I attended Howick Pride at the Howick Information Centre. To see hundreds of our rangatahi proudly sharing their identity in the centre of our community was incredibly moving.

Creating change requires breaking the norms and claiming space where there once was discrimination. But we all have a part to play. Even the small things like using someone’s preferred pronouns hold significant meaning.

There will inevitably be opposition but that cannot stop progress. I understand some would say it is inappropriate to teach our rangatahi about sexuality or gender, who perhaps would prefer to see the rainbow community isolated and contained.

But watching hundreds celebrate their identity earlier this year, I couldn’t help but think that any opponents of reform had missed the boat.

We already have a vibrant and youthful rainbow community. Our rangatahi are the ones leading the charge – they are ahead of everyone, shaping our community to their vision.

It was Young Labour that put the Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill on our agenda. As a Government, we’re just catching up.

Luxon said it would be “really awesome” to take an AT staff member on a tour of the area “to show you the challenges”.

He said a shared WhatsApp group could be set up to allow residents to communicate with each other and be kept up to date on developments and an action plan should be created.

The actions to focus on are installation of a camera or cameras in the area, speed tables or speed humps, and reducing the speed limit at Shelly Beach Parade, Luxon said. “We can find people to lead these pieces

of work and present back to the team.”

Potential sources of funding from trusts needed to be identified and Luxon would work on police engagement on the problem.

Those involved will meet again in two months to discuss progress and next steps.

The Times asked police why they declined to attend the public meeting. A spokesperson says senior Counties Manukau Police officers regularly meet with and work closely alongside local MPs and other community stakeholders.

“These regular meetings provide opportunities to discuss issues or concerns impacting the local community. They also provide a platform to cover a range of different topics, rather than a single issue as in this particular case. We expect matters raised from this public meeting will be discussed with us in our next meeting.”

The spokesperson says police are aware of concerns around street racing activity in Howick and Cockle Bay. “We have maintained, and at times increased, our police presence to address this issue and reassure the community.

“This type of activity and other high-risk driver behaviour is generally more prevalent in Botany, East Tamaki, and Burswood.

“Police will respond to calls for service when units are available to attend, however consideration must also be given to other competing demands and priority given to incidents of a critical nature.

“We continue to ask the community to assist us by reporting any dangerous or unlawful driving behaviour to police immediately at the time by phoning 111.”

Bridge fundraise for hospice Howick Bridge Club has raised thousands more for Totara Hospice: South Auckland, taking its 30-year contribution to the organisation to more than $100,000.

The club held its annual fundraising event for Totara Hospice – which provides specialist palliative care services to eligible people living with a life-limiting illness in south and south east Auckland – on July 1.

It comprised an auction of goods donated by local busi-

nesses and club members as well as a bridge tournament which attracted entries from clubs within the Auckland region.

“Our tireless organiser Mary Wood once again did an excellent job in personally visiting and securing goods, vouchers and services from 120 local businesses and the arts groups, to whom we extend our heartfelt thanks,” Howick Bridge Club’s Brian Craig said.

‘I can’t believe it’s been sixty years’

Breastfeeding group celebrates 50th Breastfeeding group La Leche League of Howick celebrated its 50th anniversary at a special morning tea on Saturday, July 31.

Founding La Leche League Howick leader Pat La Roche was thanked for the legacy she and co-leader Valerie Sowerby had left the community.

More than 20 local mothers have since been accredited as La Leche League leaders to offer support, information and encouragement to other women who wish to breastfeed.

Fifty years ago meetings were held in volunteers’ homes. Today the group meets in the Haseler Hall at All Saints Church on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 am.

I

t was Palmerston North in the early 1960s at a housewarming party and two strangers had discovered they both had identical blue Morris Minors.

Now Botany residents Colin and Barbara Johnstone are celebrating their 60th anniversary.

A discovery of common interests at the party led the pair to conversation and, eventually, engagement after a year of dating.

“We both owned a Morris Minor 1955, same colour,” Barbara says.“We compared the cars.”

Six weeks later on August 12, 1961 they got married in Kihikihi.

Colin’s first job was at the Woodville Cheese Factory. He then entered the army until 1971.

The couple lived near several different army camps around the North Island until they bought a house in Moore Street, Howick and raised their four children: Audrey, Peter, Douglas and Roslyn.

Colin worked at Freightways until 1985 when he took over Howick Mower Mart.

“He included the importation,

They are both regulars at Tiritiri Matangi Island. In the 80s, they replanted trees and vegetation. More recently they’ve been involved in the restoration and maintenance of the foghorn.

Barbara is active in the local Red Hat Society and is a regular Elim churchgoer. She held various office jobs before moving into

childcare and chaplaincy work.

The couple has been involved in a large selection of clubs and associations: athletics, U3A, Scouts, indoor bowling league, walking and tramping.

Barbara says she and Colin have had separate activities “which occasionally we share”.

“We believe it enhances our message to have our own experiences to share.”

They have four children, six grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.

When asked on the standout memories of the life she has shared with Colin, Barbara says, “Our children. They enhance our life.”

For their 60th year wedding anniversary celebration the pair will be planning a quiet family lunch together.

“I can’t believe it’s been 60 years,” Barbara says.

Unfortunately for Howick Hornets’ premier side, even Saturday’s big win against The Hawks wasn’t to be enough in their Fox Premiership match.

Hornets won 60-26.

The top side found themselves relying on Otahuhu to lose to Mt Albert to stay in the hunt.

But credit where it’s due to the Leopards and congratulations to them and the clubs that secured themselves a spot in this year’s finals series in what has been a very tight competition.

The excitement is very far from over for the Hornets though.

Confidence and anticipation amongst the fans remains sky-high thanks to Howick’s premier reserves side

remaining unbeaten, in turn ensuring they finish as minor premiers with one regular season game to go.

It is an achievement to be very proud of postseason but, for now, all focus from both squads will be on this coming Saturday when the Mt Albert Lions come to town.

Howick v Mt Albert is a rivalry that has become infamous at both clubs due to the epic battles over the years.

Position on the ladder is largely irrelevant when this these two clubs meet.

It’s about bragging rights and Howick will be looking to put the Lions on notice for next season and finish 2021 on a high note by earning the win here.

J

oanna Zhifei Kong and Cheng Chuang’s families know each other. They live on opposite sides of the same street in Bucklands Beach.

At about 8.40am on Tuesday, March 23, their two families came into contact in a way neither anticipated but which will stay with them both forever.

Five-year-old Joanna attended Pigeon Mountain Primary School.

On that day in March her parents took her

to the school in Wells Road.

They entered the grounds and walked along a footpath past the car park.

Chuang, 77, had arrived at the school in his Mercedes-Benz sedan to drop off his granddaughter, who was sitting in the car’s back seat. His wife was in the front passenger seat.

As Chuang was pulling into a parking space, he accidentally pressed his car’s accelerator pedal instead of the brake.

The vehicle was propelled forward, striking Joanna and trapping her underneath it.

Emergency services were called and the

injured schoolgirl was taken to Starship Hospital in a critical condition.

She tragically died, with her family by her side, on March 28.

On April 29 police charged Chuang with careless driving causing death in relation to the crash. He pleaded guilty to the charge in the Manukau District Court on May 28.

The two families came into contact again when Chuang reappeared in court to be sentenced by Judge Richard Earwaker on July 27.

Michelle making a difference

ichelle Prasad was named head girl, achieved excellent grades, founded her own company, received distinguished awards and was still rejected for multiple scholarship opportunities.

This inspired her to start the Good Start Foundation a year ago to help students who do so much for their community but don’t have the financial security and means to study further.

“Additionally, I started it to make sure that doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Michelle says.

It was 2018 when she moved from Fiji to New Zealand with her family. In the same year she founded her first company, Kiwi Essence, with friends when she was attending Edgewater College in 2019. She

carried it forward into 2020.

Kiwi Essence won multiple awards – the Excellence in Product Design for the East Auckland Region and Excellence in Perseverance Category in the Yes East Auckland Region Awards.

She also assisted in the company’s inclusion in the EA Region Top 8 Yes Companies list.

And she was head girl at Edgewater College in 2020.

However, despite her accomplishments, her applications to multiple scholarships were rejected.

Michelle decided to make sure this would not occur to other students.

The Good Start Foundation aims to help students who continually strive to serve their community – in and out of school – while also maintaining their academic potential and success.

Michelle Prasad started the Good Start Foundation with the aim of helping striving students.

Students eligible for assistance from the foundation are those who have continually made efforts to serve their community through volunteering or participation, while also demonstrating great ownership of their learning.

“I want to create opportunities for people who do so much for the community but don’t have the financial means to study further.”

Within two weeks the foundation garnered interest and received offers of funding. Michelle’s vision became a reality.

The scholarships will be launched in mid August and are for Year 12 or 13 students at Edgewater College. She wants to expand the scholarship opportunities to other schools as well.

“I want there to be easier access to tertiary education,” Michelle says.

After the launch and success of the foundation, she has received three scholarships: the University of Auckland Business School Inspiring Futures Scholarship, Brian Boyd First in Family Scholarship and Leap First in Family Scholarship.

Michelle studies a co-joint of Law and Commerce at the University of Auckland. She’s the first in her family to attend university.

She wishes to became a lawyer and, later in life, dip her fingers into politics.

“Outside of the foundation and my studies, I love reading and travelling,” she says. “But most especially – I like to make a difference in people’s lives. I would like to thank my family, Edgewater College staff and students and Young Enterprise staff,” she says.

“Everyone’s been wonderful.”

Environmental initiatives available to community

Sixty Year 12 and 13 art and photography students participated in the Focus 2021 Art Competition at Howick College.

Davis Funerals invited local secondary schools Howick College, Botany Secondary College and Edgewater College to take part in the support and showcasing of work by up and coming students.

Pakuranga branch manager Mr Swee Han Lim is passionate about serving the community and supporting rising talents. The Art Competition served as a dual purpose - to be involved within the community and to encourage and support local talent.

“I approached Howick College in January with the idea of hosting,” Lim says. “That’s when the ball started rolling.”

Months later the result was clear and impressive: dozens of pieces of beautiful and diverse paintings and photography covered the walls of the Bill Dimery Performing Arts Centre. They were on display to the public from July 30 Friday to August 1 Sunday.

The results were given on Sunday.

The event was sponsored by Davis Funerals.

By ZOE GARDEN The Beautification Trust has launched four new initiatives to help empower south and east Auckland communities to lead their own successful environmental and beautification projects.

The official launch of the projects - the Community Tool Library, the Tiaki Fund, the Free Community Compost, and Creator Space - on Thursday, July 29 was celebrated by the Trust at a morning tea.

Locals can borrow tools free of charge from a Community Tool Library for their own environmental and beautification projects.

The library is in a re-purposed shipping container and has hundreds of tools like spades, wheelbarrows and paint brushes which can be reserved on their website.

The Trust’s newly established Tiaki Fund offers grants up to $1000 per project towards the cost of locally led initiatives in south or east Auckland.

“Whether it’s a waste clean-up, community mural, native planting or something else,” the Trust says. “If you want to make a difference in your community, we want to help you make it happen.”

Papakura has a weekly kerbside collection of household food scraps which is made into compost.

This compost can be ordered and collected from the Trust free-of-charge for south and east communities in Holmes Road, Manurewa.

The compost can be used in home gardens, schools and community gardens.

The Creator Space is the Trust’s vision to “see communities love and respect the environment”.

It’s a newly refurbished workshop and classroom facility at the Trust in Holmes Road. The space is available to hire for teaching sustainable practices and environmental education.

“When it comes to beautification and protecting the environment, locals know best what needs to be done in their own community,” says Beautification Trust CEO, Daniel Barthow.

“These new programmes are designed to give people the tools and resources they need to succeed.”

“I drew people who I’m close too,” Skyla says.

“I’m interested in who they are as people. It’s a hobby,” she says.

“But I’d like to do something in art in the future.”

On his winning photograph, Wuttipat says, “I took it because of the lighting. It looked great.”

He told the Times that he would love to pursue a career in photography. “I’ve been doing it since I was ten. When you take a photo of something, you see a different perspective on it.”

There was also a prize of $1000 to the top school which was won by Howick College.

Lim says the exhibition and prize giving results were “fantastic”.

“It’s about the students,” he says. “I hope it encourages more participation in events like these.”

RETURN ON E-LIGHTENMENT Thanks Darrin Heaven (Times, July 20) for helping us set a clearer context for “E-Lightenment”.

Our driveway cost approximately $50k as did our solar system including battery. At <3 per cent of our total build, the ROE (Return on Equity) for solar is far greater than for the driveway.

Context: Jon was born/raised on the property. Howick Beach has become an affluent, amplyserviced community housing many who can afford to build, plan and buy low-carbon solutions.

Inheriting the land, we invested in building a Petal Certified Building under the Living Building Challenge with intent to model and share climate change solutions (see www.tanglewood2.net).

Goal: To demonstrate that it is possible to build a warm, dry, beautiful home, connected to whenua that models carbon reduction solutions whilst restoring nature. ROE is based on Return-on-ECO rather than the standard consumerdriven Return-on-EGO. Imperatives: Use resources wisely with future generations in mind. Climate action requires us to work collectively: use low/zero carbon building materials, replace lawns with carbon sequestering natives, compost, avoid waste and combustion. It’s time to thinkthrough the impact of everything we do, buy, and model. Eco-action must reflect generosity – and no doubt some sacrifice – to grow the collective spirit and courage to sustain through our many emergencies.

RENEWABLES ARE UNRELIABLE I wish to respond to the letter from Dennis Horne, Times, August 3, in which he comments on an earlier letter from Darrin Heaven.

Whilst I can understand the superficial attractiveness of his recommended rooftop solar panels, his suggestion of how 30,000 of them could have been financed instead of the America’s Cup is naïve in the extreme.

Does he not know that the socalled “renewables” of solar and windmills are actually the “unreliables”, and that it is totally impossible for these forms of generation to come anywhere near the high figures quoted by our technicallyilliterate politicians?

To install them on a rooftop requires an expensive complicated control system plus an expensive battery, unless he is referring to those fortunate residents who wish to heat a swimming pool during the day! A total system is not cheap!

Since most of us have a strong desire for an uninterruptible power supply 24/7, we still have to operate a system capable of carrying the full electrical grid load at all times, especially on those still, dark nights when solar and wind can contribute nothing.

So if we have an absolute need for such a system, why would anyone with sense think it a worthwhile investment also to install a partial solar and wind systems?

Perhaps he can answer the question in another letter in the same issue, as to how all those streetparked cars could recharge their batteries if our government is stupid enough to continue with their quest for electricity-consuming subsidised vehicles. Even Germany and California are finding their “renewable” dreams disappearing amongst the practicalities of power generation.

They are starting to realise that sufficient power distribution will require almost all on-street distribution cabling to be replaced and enlarged.

HEALTH CAMP MUST NOT GO In the early 1900s, Elizabeth Gunn recognised that many children in NZ were living in deprived situations and suffering from poor health.

TB [tuberculosis] at that time was prevalent. In 1919 she established the first children’s health camp.

Her aim was to provide sun, fun, exercise, rest and nutritious meals in a caring environment.

By selecting children with physical and mental health issues (behavioural problems), she was addressing the needs of many who were living below the poverty line.

Eventually, seven such camps were established around NZ recognising that ‘Children’s Health equals a Nation’s Wealth.’

Today they are named Stand for Children Camps and promise that with them, tamariki and whanau are safe and will recover from past trauma, reconnect and be able to create a positive future.

At the Stand (Pakuranga) Health Camp, Half Moon Bay, I hear the laughter of children, I hear the voices of children in song, I see clusters of children at play on the grassy slopes of the camp, I watch groups of excited children skipping down to the beach and along to Musick Point. My heart is full, for these are the children our government is caring for.

A few years ago a large area of these grounds was sold off for housing but the camp retained an adequate portion and gained new architecturally designed buildings.

But today I am dismayed to

HIDDEN AGENDAS

Labour is demonstrating an attitude of “let’s ambush or hoodwink the electorate and embed political changes before people wake up and we lose the next election”.

Labour was never voted into government so they could provide $50 million to the media on the proviso that media recipients include more Maori language in their presentations.

Similarly, they were not voted into government to undermine the Treaty of Waitangi’s progress by reinterpretation of its precepts and taking unilateral actions on disputes e.g. Ihumatao.

Nor were they voted into government to effect to massive ‘asset and rights transfers’ through the “Three Waters” scheme.

They weren’t voted into government to push ‘woke history’ in our schools as a means of indoctrinating our children to their theology (‘wokeism’ operates like religion).

Labour achieved a significant majority vote because they had the guile to hide from the voters their real agendas; that is political cynicism and dishonesty of the highest order. From a government that ‘promised’ to be transparent. Who knows what else they have up their sleeve?

They do not have a mandate for most of their hidden and unfolding agendas. If only their opposition wasn’t so useless.

IMPORTING LOW-GRADE COAL A CRIME I enjoyed the letter from Dennis N Horne (Times, July 20).

He was my dentist and always good for a bit of a laugh .

However, can’t find the gist in his reasoning. I certainly agree that we should not be burning fossil fuels.

Indeed, the necessity to import over 1 million tonnes of low-grade coal from Indonesia is a crime in itself.

Not only that but the energy used to transport that by old vessels burning terrible bunkering oil, a disaster.

Lucky that we still had the plant at Huntly to turn the coal into electricity. If Jacinda and her team had not cut off the supply of gas to the plant [much cleaner burning stock], the dirty coal would not have been necessary.

Out of interest, I have shares in Mercury Energy who have increasing input into windmill, thermal and hydropower sources of power.

But Dennis, I don’t know who KlusClan is but, in my opinion, the sooner the next election takes place, the happier I and NZ will be.

IT’S ALL PROPAGANDA

Regarding the comment article titled “Money for the mongrel mob a sick joke,” Times, July 20, we wealthy bastions of society have a divine right to rule. Problem is, as we get richer our numbers get smaller.

So, we want votes and we don’t mind how we get them.

We have no option but to use subtle deceit, it’s a legitimate form of propaganda called electioneering. We have to convince the evergrowing numbers of poorer people to believe that their lives will be improved by voting for us.

Now take our gangs, drug runners the lot of them, for it’s the easy way these unemployable can make money and survive.

Prime Minister Robert Muldoon gave lots of money to the gangs in an effort to help them with employment by setting up government-subsidised work schemes and legitimate businesses.

Now we cannot have that, gangs members cleaning themselves up and forsaking drugs.

We need gangs to reinforce our propaganda and show that we are the only party for law and order.

The impact of our propaganda message for law and order will be considerably reduced if our gangs forsake crime.

It is important that we keep secret, that over the years in power, we did nothing to stop gang recruitment, or improve the lives of poorer people. Also emphasise that the taxpayers’ money has been given to the gangs, not the government programme and don’t forget the gang patch photo.

It is imperative that our central organ of propaganda keep our MPs and party faithful supplied with a constant stream of propaganda that they can get published in their local newspapers as we can well afford the cost.

It is also imperative that our main agenda of reducing the size of government services, thereby reducing taxation for our wealthy, be kept credible in the eyes of the public.

MACLEANS’ DAFT DOG PARK IDEA I have emailed the Howick Local Board (HLB) with a letter similar to this. In the Times there are several

letters saying ‘No’ to the proposal by the Howick Local Board for a fenced off area in Macleans Park for dogs.

There is not a single letter in support.

Among those in the area who know that I have been campaigning, not one person has said they agree with the proposal.

Moreover, it seems that it was only the property owners near Macleans Park who received the letter but local dog owners were not approached for their opinion.

Anyway, it isn’t really public consultation because there is no option in the survey to say ‘Keep the status quo’.

I am also still ignorant as to who proposed the idea in the first place.

The letter from Auckland Council states the HLB has identified the areas yet one of the HLB members informed me it was the Council who proposed the project.

Another thing I really don’t understand is why the fenced area has been proposed when that same Board member said it wouldn’t change the status of the park as being an ‘off-leash area for dogs’.

Seems to me the HLB is making ‘busy work’ to make themselves look useful.

Have you looked at the parking on Macleans Road along the area of Option B? In term-time there is no parking because it is all taken up by the students and teachers of Macleans College. As for Charles Dickens Drive, that is narrow enough without the street being invaded by vehicles with dogs.

The sites proposed have no shelter. In winter the ground is very wet and, at times, boggy. In fact, it is difficult to walk easily now on either option because of the recent rain – 41.6mm in the last six days (July 21 – 26) according to my rain gauge.

Whatever the Council informs the HLB about the survey, it needs to be ignored because it isn’t in the spirit of ‘public consultation’ as it ignores the third option noted earlier in this email.

I like the suggestion of a place set up in Lloyd Elsmore Park – great idea for all the reasons suggested by several respondents in the Times.

Last week NZ mainstream media were the recipients of Government hand-outs and all the money came with strings attached.

Business Desk reported on the winners of the first round of Government largesse that officially is described as the Public Interest Journalism Fund.

The beneficiaries include: Stuff, who was given $300,000.

The string attached to the money is that they must produce a “cultural competency” course for journalists with the intention of it being ultimately used across the industry in order to “fundamentally shift representation in NZ media”.

The Spinoff, which has the same size audience as The BFD, was given $207,000. The string attached to the money was that they agreed to do a podcast series that would “explore Maori issues”.

A local secondary school has found a smart new way to raise funds.

The new Bentley Pavilion – named after former principal Byron Bentley – is now available as a venue for hire to the public.

Macleans College sees this as an opportunity for local families and businesses to have a venue which showcases the beautiful Howick area. Rally stars revving up again S

ome of the biggest names in Kiwi motorsport are set to return to rural east Auckland for a high-octane event in front of thousands of fans.

The Repco Battle of Jacks Ridge rallying competition made its exciting debut on a purpose-built 2km track at former national rally champion Andrew Hawkeswood’s family property in Whitford in November last year.

The track was designed to be used during the 2020 World Rally Championship Rally New Zealand which was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

V8 Supercars champion and Kiwi motorsport ace Shane van Gisbergen overcame a star-studded field including World Rally Championship driver Hayden Paddon to capture the Battle of Jacks Ridge inaugural title in front of about 5000 spectators.

Competitors blasted around a purpose-built gravel road at the property featuring high speed jumps, sharp corners and close proximity to spectators for maximum noise and drama.

This year’s version will be held at

NETBALL

School netball comp looms The Upper North Island Secondary Schools (UNISS) netball competition will be held at Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre (HPNC) at Lloyd Elsmere Park from August 30 to September 3.

The annual competition involves schools from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Northland areas. There are 112 secondary schools registered to attend.

The competition was last held in 2019 at Netball North Harbour.

Last year’s competition was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The competition is formatted into four grades. Teams will play twice a day. Finals will be played on September 3 as follows: D Grade - 12:30 C Grade - 13:30 B Grade - 14:30 A Grade - 15:30 Finals will be streamed live for those that are not able to attend in person. Details will be available on the website closer to the time.

Winners of the 2019 competition, all returning again this year, were: A Grade - Saint Kentigerns School B Grade - Waitakere College C Grade - Bay Of Islands College D Grade - Hobsonville Point Secondary School “We expect about 2000 people to be at the courts throughout the day, consisting of players, coaches, managers, umpires, and volunteers,” Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre’s Amelia Chambers said.

“In addition to this we expect a large number of spectators to come and enjoy the games.”

Van Gisbergen piloted a Ralliart New Zealand Mitsubishi Mirage AP4 rally car to victory last year.

He beat driver Phil Campbell in the head-to-head final and says he’s returning to defend the title.

“It was an awesome experience last year and I had a blast,” van Gisbergen says.

“The field will be super competi-

tive and I’ll have my work cut out again in 2021 but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Paddon set the early pace in last year’s contest, including a record time on one run, before making a small mistake that saw him clip a bank and roll his car.

The Hyundai driver has also confirmed he will return to take on van Gisbergen again.

The inaugural event was a big success and its organisers did a great job, Paddon says.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get it quite right, so I’m determined to come back and have another go.

“I know there’s huge interest from some really good drivers so I expect a tough challenge.

“The layout was great, the fans were awesome and I can’t wait to

get out there and put on a show for everyone.”

Last year’s contest was broadcast live on Sky Sport and will be again.

The competition is backed by Auckland Council’s economic and cultural agency Auckland Unlimited.

Its head of major and business events Richard Clarke says the Battle of Jacks Ridge is an example of Kiwi ingenuity born from the challenges of 2020.

The organisation is “thrilled” to support it, he says.

“We see a bright future for this event to attract even more internationals to this purpose-built rally venue along with motorsport-hungry fans to Auckland for some of the best viewing on offer.”

Among the other drivers to compete last year were V8 Supercars legend Greg Murphy, current national rally champion Ben Hunt, rally veteran Joe McAndrew, and Andrew Hawkeswood’s son Jack Hawkeswood, who finished third and for whom the event is named.

Tickets to this year’s Repco Battle of Jacks Ridge go on sale on August 15.

Pakuranga Tennis stalwarts’ lifetime commitment Pakuranga Tennis Club celebrates its Centennial next year and is sharing a number of stories over the coming months marking the milestone When researching 100 years of an organisation’s history, many highlights and commitments of individuals come to the fore.

Two such individuals who, it could be said, committed far more than their fair share to tennis in Auckland were Joy and Jack Charman. Joy was a multi-term past-president of the Pakuranga Tennis Club and, together with husband Jack, made a truly unique family commitment.

Joy first mooted the idea of a tennis club in Blockhouse Bay in 1956 and became their first president, with Jack taking over the reins two years later, remaining in the position until 1974. The club began life at Lynfield College until enough money was raised to build five courts on the present site.

Joy and Jack worked tirelessly on fundraising efforts to achieve this and the club finally opened in 1964. Both were awarded Life Membership in 1971.

Concurrent with these efforts, both became involved in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, now known as Tennis Auckland.

Jack served on the committee of the association from 1958-1980, being appointed president in 1979 and a Life Member in 1982.

responsibilities included Billeting Officer on the Entertainment Committee and the first Convenor on the Ladies Auxiliary. Joy was Jack’s offsider on the association until after 10 years she was made a member of the Tennis Auckland committee in her own right, going on to serve for 25 years. She was made president in 1992 and a Life Member in 1986 The Charmans moved to Pakuranga in 1975 and, naturally, joining a local tennis club was a priority. Although the Pakuranga Club was well-established at this stage, there was ample opportunity for Joy and Jack to express their love of tennis and administrative flair.

Joy’s first initiative was to inaugurate an annual tournament

between the two clubs she had been involved with. As Jack was a returned soldier, Joy thought it fitting to donate a trophy recognising our returned soldiers and to be played on Anzac Day. Called ‘The Friendship Trophy’, teams of eight men and eight women played at each club in alternate years. Over the years, the honours were split evenly and it became a tangible way of expressing the comradery and remembering the history between the two clubs.

A major expansion to the clubhouse took place in 1987 and both Joy and Jack were actively involved. A building previously the Otahuhu office of John Sheers (whose wife Val was a club member) was transported to the club’s site and erected on a concrete block base to form a handsome two-story facility with viewing decks on either side.

Joy had a particular passion for encouraging junior tennis and in 1985 she instigated an annual tournament for age groups, this year’s event being reported in a Times article of April 7, 2021.

Played between the members of local east Auckland clubs, the Trophy has had tremendous success in encouraging junior tennis in our area.

Joy took an active involvement in Pakuranga’s management committee serving two terms as club president from 1985 and again from 1991 to 1994

Regrettably, Jack died while playing at Pakuranga in 1991 and Joy died in 2016 but the legacy of their total commitment to Tennis Auckland, Blockhouse Bay and Pakuranga Tennis clubs lives on to this day.

To celebrate the 100-year history of the Pakuranga Tennis Club, it is planning a weekend of activities, including a formal dinner, on February 11-13, 2022.

Cross country nationals titles Pakuranga athletes Imogen Barlow and Ben Oxford have won national titles at the 2021 Athletics New Zealand Cross-country Championships.

Run in very cold conditions at the Chisholm Links in Dunedin, Barlow claimed the under-14 3km women’s title with a time of 11m 31s while Oxford took out the under-14 3km men’s race in 10m 52s.

Carrington and Pascoe worthy superstars I

t’s disappointing some folk are in dispute as to whether Lisa Carrington or Sophie Pascoe is our greatest Olympian when both should be celebrated equally for their magnificent achievements.

In Tokyo, Carrington took her Olympic Games medal tally over two Olympics to six with five gold and one bronze to surpass the five registered by equestrian rider Mark Todd and kayakers Ian Ferguson and Paul MacDonald at previous Games.

Equally amazing, swimmer Pascoe has a total of 15 at three Paralympics – nine gold and six silver to also earn her legendary status. To suggest she has been ignored because of Carrington’s latest feat is rubbish.

In having to race up to three times in one day at the start of Carrington’s Tokyo campaign and maintain her winning habit all the way to claiming golds in the K1 200 and 5000 and K2 500, the latter with Caitlin Royal, speaks of a competitor in a class of her own.

Heavyweight David Nyika joined Ted Morgan (gold), Kevin Barry (silver) and David Tua (bronze) to become New Zealand’s fourth boxer to win an Olympic medal.
