ACCIDENT

School bus driver injured in crash By CHRIS HARROWELL

he driver of a school bus that crashed into several parked cars in east Auckland last week received head injuries in the incident, according to eyewitnesses. Police were alerted to the crash, which happened at the block of shops opposite Barry Curtis Skatepark in Chapel Road, Flat Bush, at about 3.50pm last Wednesday. Traffic diversions were put in place near the scene. The Murphy Buses school bus crashed into multiple vehicles parked outside the shops. Another vehicle was shunted onto the footpath and came to a stop outside a beauty salon. Three other cars were pushed into each other. A worker at the block of shops says the impact of the bus crashing into the parked vehicles sounded like a bomb going off. The owner of one of the damaged vehicles, a Toyota Rumion, had just entered Chapel Park Dental when he heard what he describes as a “massive crunch”.

The man, who doesn’t want to be identified, says he walked back out of the dentist and saw what had happened. “The bus driver was hunched over the steering wheel and the kids on the bus were trying to get out,” he says. “I jumped over the bonnet of my car to try to force the bus door open to get them out.” The eyewitness says he then saw fuel leaking from the bus onto the ground. He helped to get the school pupils off the bus and turned his attention to the driver. “He was bleeding from his head and [appeared to be] unconscious,” he says. “I tried to get him to wake up. He started to stir. A few other people came to help. “We tried to get him out of the seat but because he was so shocked he kept grabbing the steering wheel. We talked to him but he wasn’t responding. “We touched him to try to move him but he kept gripping the wheel and wouldn’t move.” Emergency services then arrived at the scene and the eyewitness and other helpers left the bus.

He says the school pupils who had been on the bus appeared to be shaken but uninjured. He feels a “bit gutted” about the damage to his vehicle, which he only bought three months ago. Dentist Dr Raymond Abel and dental assistant Reshma Sony were at work at Chapel Park Dental when the crash happened. Abel says he heard a loud noise and initially thought it was a fire alarm. It turned out to be the bus’s horn sounding continuously due to the driver leaning onto it. Sony says when she went outside she saw the bus driver was bleeding from the forehead. She says he appeared to be “fainting”. “We checked if he was okay. We gave him water but he couldn’t drink. The children were perfectly fine.” Howick College principal Iva Ropati confirmed his school’s pupils were on the bus at the time of the crash. “Some of the students were quite shaken up by the experience but are doing well today,”

he says. “Our counsellors, as a follow-up, were making contact with the students this morning but none reported they needed any further support. “We had some initial contact with the bus company yesterday and they confirmed the driver had a ‘medical event’ and is being supported. “We were extremely pleased with the way our students coped through the ordeal.” A St John Ambulance spokeswoman says St John was phoned at 3.40pm about the crash. Two ambulances and one manager responded to the scene. “St John treated and transported one patient in a serious condition to Middlemore Hospital,” she says. “One patient was assessed and treated at the scene for moderate injuries and two patients in a minor condition were assessed at the scene.” Police reopened Chapel Road to vehicle traffic at about 7.30pm on Wednesday. A scene examination had been conducted and inquiries are ongoing.

he Highland Park Sewing Group are a voluntary non-profit organisation who provide infant and children’s clothing made or repaired by a regular group of volunteers every Thursday morning at the Highland Park St John’s Ambulance Hall. These items are passed on weekly to Middlemore Kidz First, the Anglican Trust and Dingwall Trust. The group was started many years ago by Gretl Bass, QSM, to help keep the newborn babies of the under-privileged at Middlemore Hospital’s Kidz First adequately clothed in the first few months of their lives. To start with, Gretl and friends mended and laundered donated clothes. This system changed in recent years, as the hospital will now only allow new garments to be given to mothers in their care. Farmers department store then came on board and donated material which was

HISTORY

It’s back to the future The Times – with support from Howick historian Alan La Roche - has once again produced the much sought-after historical calendar. This coming year is really important for the area as Howick, Pakuranga and districts prepare for the 175th celebrations in 2022. The photos depict the past 175 years and how the area then known as Howick and districts developed. Times Media’s managing director Reay Neben said: “These calendars proved very popular last year and so we decided especially after the Covid lockdown it was important – with Alan La Roche’s help – to produce them again. “Our front cover is of the old Marine Hotel which burnt down in the 1920s. It was on the same site upon which the Prospect of Howick now proudly stands.” The calendars are available at the Times offices (10 Central Terrace) and also Poppies Bookshop (on Picton Street). You can phone us on 2718000 or email info@times.co.nz. The Times will also have a stand selling these and other Howick products at the Christmas Fair in Howick Village on Friday, November 20.

alls are growing for action to be taken over what people say is a lack of safe and easily accessible skate parks in east Auckland. Despite the rain, more than 50 people gathered at the Lloyd Elsmore Skatepark in Pakuranga on November 3 for an event organised by Aaron Martin, who describes himself as a “passionate local skater dad”. He says he and others believe the facility is no longer up to scratch. “The old Lloyd Elsmore Skatepark was built over 20 years ago and it shows. The park urgently needs an upgrade, with a street-style park to cater for all ages and experience,” Martin says. He says the park’s “worn concrete” is a health and safety risk and someone told him it was like “hitting a cheese-grater”. “Even to the non-skater, it’s clear the park is well past its best-before date, with large cracks through the concrete.” But Martin says the park’s surface isn’t the only issue. Users are quick to point out the design faults in its ramps and rails, he says. “The lack of lighting, toilets, water fountains or even rub-

bish bins made it unpleasant and at times dangerous.” Martin says despite these issues, the park is still used due to the lack of alternatives. The only option is to travel to Barry Curtis Skatepark in Flat Bush or Victoria Park in Auckland’s CBD, he says. Martin says the Flat Bush facility is too far for many

younger users to get to and its popularity means it’s not always a practical option. Howick Local Board members Bruce Kendall and David Collings went along to Martin’s event at the Lloyd Elsmore Skatepark. They acknowledge the current state is not adequate. “It’s clearly not okay,” Collings

says. He added that numerous plans to replace or upgrade the park have not come to fruition. Kendall encouraged those in attendance to ensure they were heard on the issue. Martin says he and others are putting together a proposal to present to the Howick Local Board and welcome public support.

LEGAL

Big questions over police actions The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that police had lawful grounds to detain a family during a search in Auckland. However, the length of time the family was held was unreasonable and the manner of their detention was unlawful. In the early hours of February 9, 2019, police were advised of a robbery, involving a firearm, at a bar in Pakuranga. They were subsequently made aware of an attempted car theft in a nearby neigh-

bourhood. Soon after, the police helicopter noticed two males, one of whom had a firearm, and two females in the backyard of a house across the road from the site of the alleged car theft. The Armed Offender Squad was deployed. They called four family members out of the house and detained them. They eventually established that the family had not been involved in the robbery. However, one of the family members had seen someone run through their backyard and had gone outside

Just

with the firearm to see if anyone was there. The Authority found police had lawful grounds to detain the family. However, being held for lengths of time ranging between approximately an hour and 13 minutes, to an hour and 48 minutes was unreasonable. Additionally, placing the family in the back of police cars was unlawful. “They should have been detained on the premises. We were also concerned as to the treatment of the mother and

daughter,” said Authority chair Judge Colin Doherty. “Police did not take immediate, active steps to determine whether or not the family had been involved in the robbery. The delay in doing so and length of time they were held, was unreasonable. “We were also concerned as to the treatment of the mother and daughter. Having been roused from their beds, they were not properly clothed and were not offered anything with which to cover themselves.”

RECOVERY

Sailing club rebuilds after storm By CHRIS HARROWELL

I

t’s taken a huge amount of money and work to repair the damage left behind when a storm smashed into the Howick Sailing Club’s premises almost three years ago. The storm that struck east Auckland’s coastline on January 5, 2018, caused an estimated $100,000 of damage in repairs and lost equipment to the club, its commodore Tim Nichols says. Among the important equipment the ocean took from its clubroom at Howick Beach were buoys, anchors, tools, and a safety boat. “A huge, high, king tide came through with a massive northerly and smashed up the downstairs of the club,” Nichols told the Times. “We started a programme about six months ago to basically put it back together.” Nichols says it took a lot of work to get the club’s insurers and engineers to agree on what was needed to be done. “We’ve taken the opportunity to redecorate inside the clubroom, which wasn’t part of the original works programme but something we chose to do. “The club has not had any

time or effort spent on it since about 1965. We’ve redecorated, repainted and cleaned it all up. We’ve ended up with a really cool space.” Nichols says the club hopes its new revamped clubroom can help it attract new members. It runs a range of initiatives for young sailors in the community and facilitates a Waterwise programme on behalf of four local schools that gives Year 7 and 8 pupils the chance to learn about water safety. “They come down and do some sailing and kayaking and it’s all about getting confident on the water,” Nichols says. “The Howick Sailing Club’s reason for being is to help to make this happen. We run our own ‘learn to sail’ programmes off the back of that. The kids come and they have a great day. “The club is all about learning to sail so we work really hard on that and it’s a programme we love.” Nichols says while the bulk of the repairs to the clubroom were funded through insurance, the Howick Local Board has provided money to carry out additional work. The club applied to the board

News bites GRANTS AWARDED

NZ Community Trust awarded grants valued at $657,832.37 in the Auckland region in October. Local recipients included Howick Little Theatre which received $782 for a first aid training course while Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre was granted $20,000 for salary. Several Auckland gaming venues contributed to these grants including Barrel Inn in Howick and Celsius Bar in Flat Bush.

CLUBS WIN FUNDING

for a grant of $24,838.60 toward the purchase and installation of windows, glass and doors for its clubroom. The board voted to grant it $12,000. The board previously provided funding to the club to buy a number of Optimist dinghies in 2018. Nichols says now is an ideal time for new people to get involved with the club. There’s a variety of activities for people to take part in, including Sunday afternoon racing. He’s also keen to hear from people who might want to rent out the clubroom. “We have a relatively small membership and would really

love to grow the club. “We’ve got some boats we can let people use but generally from a club racing perspective people bring their own boats down. “The club has spent all this time creating a great facility and we want to make people aware that space is available to rent at a ridiculously cheap price.” Howick Local Board chairwoman Adele White says the sailing club’s premises has provide a “great service for many years”. “Because of its location, it is subject to the elements and is well in need of an upgrade. “The board is proud we can support this work.”

Auckland Council’s Parks, Arts, Community and Events Committee has approved applications totalling more than $9.9 million from the Sport and Recreation Facility Investment Fund. Among the recipients are Howick Bowling Club and Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club. The bowling club was approved funding of $350,000 for two covered greens. The bike club also won capital development funding and receives $109,440 for mountain bike track development upgrade.

DAM LEVELS RISE

A good dosing of rain over several days has nudged water levels up in Auckland. There was 32mm recorded in the Hunua Ranges overnight Sunday. Dam storage is now up to 71.16 per cent capacity, up from 69.76 per cent the previous day. Normal dam levels for this time of year is 91.7 per cent. Big Boss Barber

Three years ago Big Boss arrived at the Cook Street courtyard and immediately took off. The team was pleasantly surprised when customers of all ages dropped in to visit. “We have found Howick to be an incredibly supportive and kind community. We adore our customers and the people we are surround by every day,” says owner Hussein Jabbar. Big Boss is a family-owned business and it reflects in the service that is big on quality and consistency, whether it is a hair cut or beard shaping/trimming. “We specialise in razor fades, skin fade, and beard design. We also offer threading, face waxing and shampoo treatment. “We would like to welcome new customers to come try us out in this gorgeous court-

One of my favourite things about a fresh new season is watching the stores in town bring out their fresh and creative displays, says Holly Ensor, owner of The Flower Bar. “When I travelled to Europe it was the smallest details—like the scent of a burning candle or fresh, seasonal flowers in the windows — marked the turning of winter to spring. “When I first opened my shop, this was the thing I was most excited about. Now, even three years later, it’s still something I get so giddy about for the shop. This season, we’re ever evolving by bringing hot summer features to the store,” she says. Holly’s good for The Flower Bar is that for clients to walk in and get inspiration for their own home, whether it be flowers, can-

tudents from TC Fine Arts are displaying their paintings at Uxbridge’s Malcolm Smith Gallery from November 20January 18. After 17 years Tony Clarke has moved his classes back to Uxbridge, where he started his tutoring days. “We have been at

Uxbridge for two years and it’s been a great move. The team at Uxbridge are very good to work with and there is a nice community feel to the centre,” says Clarke. The exhibition includes a wide range of work from that of some very new students, to that of students who been with TC Fine Arts

for nearly 20 years. “During the Covid-19 lockdown a small group managed to keep painting, using zoom meetings to get some advice on their artwork. “It has been a tough year but it’s really nice to celebrate all our students endeavours with this exhibition,” he says.

t has been an enormous privilege to serve as your MP these last three years and I am grateful to have been re-elected to continue working for Pakuranga. Thank you for your support. The next three years are shaping up to be some of the most important in a generation as New Zealand seeks to rebuild following the economic effects of Covid-19. Kiwis have delivered the first majority Government under MMP with Labour at the helm, and while I respect that decision, it makes my job and that of the Opposition more important and more relevant than ever before. Being a majority Government gives them significant power, but they must use it for the benefit of all New Zealanders and have no excuses if they fail to deliver.

On top of this, a big part of my job is to help individuals with personal issues they need assistance with, whether it’s to do with getting assistance from Government Departments like ACC or Work and Income, advocating to the Council on local issues or taking your views on policy to Wellington. My office is highly visible and located at 120A Pakuranga Road and you can call or email us any time on 572 0000 or PakurangaMP@parliament.govt.nz if you need assistance, wish to meet with me, or just want to share your concerns about something. Thank you again for the faith you have placed in me as your MP for Pakuranga and I look forward to working hard for you over the next few years. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga

MP for Pakuranga

Simeon Brown The Government must get it right for New Zealanders who are struggling as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and must be focused on growing our economy, retaining jobs and providing opportunities for Kiwis. The National Party Opposition will hold the Government to account and ensure it uses its power responsibly. I am looking forward to this challenge. There is also much to do in Pakuranga and during the campaign I outlined my priorities if re-elected. Among those remains my commitment to the on-time and on-budget delivery of the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover, a project consistently raised with me during the campaign.

THEATRE

Dickens’ Christmas classic brought to life By CHRIS HARROWELL

I

I’M TOO OLD

This is what our recruitment team heard as they did a recruiting drive in the main street of Howick.

Starring in Howick Little Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol are actors, from left, Ryan Burgoyne, Miriam Gedge , Miguel Mitchell, and David Steadman. Times photo Wayne Martin

Gordon says Paller’s interpretation of the story is a “unique insight” into a very traditional and wellknown Charles Dickens story. “We see it from the point of view of the author of the story,” he says. “It incorporates the theme of family within it and his [Dickens’] own life and he’s brought that to the stage. “He employs the services of his family to bring the story to life. We see the little nuances and interactions and it’s a nice kind of coming together story that epitomises the Christmas spirit.” Among the production’s young cast members are actors Ryan Burgoyne, 14, Miriam Gedge, 12, and Miguel Mitchell, 11.

Ryan plays the characters of Charlie and Tiny Tim and says the role requires portraying people with youthful personalities. Miguel plays Dickens’ inner child, while Miriam plays Dickens’ niece Helen. She says she’s enjoying preparing for the role. “I love the rehearsals,” Miriam says.

t’s Christmas Eve, 1843, and Charles Dickens’ family and friends have gathered at the famous writer’s home for a night of shenanigans and storytelling. Director Andrew Gordon oversees Howick Little Theatre’s upcoming production of A Christmas Carol, which is written by Michael Paller and staged from November 21 to December 12. Actor David Steadman plays the dual characters of Charles Dickens and Scrooge. Steadman says A Christmas Carol unfolds as the character of Dickens invites a group of friends over to perform the play he’s currently writing. “They all morph into characters in the play,” he says. “I merge into Scrooge, so we all go in and out. Steadman says the production may not be what the audience expects. “It’s a lot darker than people would think. They may think it’s something light but it’s actually quite emotional.”

Dentart raises the standard of dentistry

• Dental Examination • Scaling and Polishing • Fillings • Root Canal Treatment

“Do it once and do it right.” That’s the philosophy at the heart of Dr Elena Artyukh’s successful Howick dentistry practice, which marked its 15th anniversary at its location at Selwyn House in October. The large number of long-term patients she and her team have helped over the years is testament to her professionalism, friendly and welcoming attitude, and exceptionally high standards. Dr Artyukh says many people are now making the smart decision to have dental work instead of spending money on an overseas trip.

• Extraction • Cosmetic Dentistry

“With 2D you have to have symptoms and you come to a conclusion. “Sometimes it is difficult but with 3D x-rays it is black and white.” She says the machine is particularly helpful for determining areas of unhealed infection around root canal-treated or broken teeth. “We can see if it is cracked or has underlying problems. “The choice is if it is worth keeping or fixing or should it come out and have an alternative solution such as an implant or denture. “We also have machines that make crowns and restorations on-site on the same day.

“We always want to offer the best solution, which is long-term prevention,” she says. “I praise that move because people are spending money on their own health and finally repairing what they have been thinking about for a long time. “Before people would just say they were busy with this or that, but now they come and say we were talking about that, now let’s fix it.” Dr Artyukh says her practice has a range of advanced equipment to help determine what work its patients need. “We have a 3D x-ray machine that shows everything we need to see and if there is a problem or not.

ADVERTORIAL JH16213A

“We prepare the tooth, scan it and design the restoration, and it goes to the milling machine which mills the design out of porcelain block, which is a strong aesthetic material. “It goes in the furnace and is then ready to be fitted. “The patient just has a 30-40 minute break. While that’s happening we can fix something else. “We can do a number of things in the same appointment so the patient doesn’t have to come and go several times.” Dentart – The Art of Dentistry Phone 09 534 2614 16 Selwyn Road, Howick www.dentart.co.nz

HISTORY

Howick’s birthday, How-ick-citing!

ANNIVERSARY

As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary in 2022, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017

W

e have a lot to celebrate on November 15, 2020. It was 173 years ago when the first Fencible-settlers arrived at Waipaparoa-Howick Beach welcomed by Ngai Tai chiefs Tara Te Irirangi and Wiremu Te Wheoro who could see co-operative advantages. They had grown up at the Maraetai Mission school and had pigs, orchards of fruit trees, gardens of vegetables and abundant fish in the gulf. Howick was settled by pakeha in 1847, one year before Otago settlers and three years before Canterbury settlers arrived. Governor Sir George Grey made a special trip to Lyttleton in 1850 to welcome the 700 Canterbury Anglican immigrants but did not welcome the 900 Auckland Fencibles three years earlier. The Fencible immigration to Auckland of 2463 people between 1847 and 1852 was larger than the Otago Free Church of Scotland immigration in 1848 or the Canterbury immigration in 1850 of over 700 immigrants.

An artist’s impression of the first Fencibles landing at Howick Beach, November 15, 1847. Image supplied

Governor Grey knew these Fencible army pensioners were arriving but had made no preparation for them. On October 18, 1847, the Governor along with Bishop Selwyn, surveyor Felton Mathew and Major Richmond walked from the Tamaki River and chose the

site of Howick village. He had considered Matakana, Mahurangi and Kerikeri for Fencible settlements but Auckland needed to be protected from “possible” attack. The first Fencible families left from Gravesend, London, on July 1, 1847 on the Minerva and, after

a non-stop “favourable voyage” of 100 days, arrived in Auckland Harbour on October 8, 1847. Immigrant ships tried not to stop en-route as the crew might desert ship for which there were severe penalties. The Minerva was built in 1845 in the Poplar district of East Indian docks on the River Thames, called by the locals “the Great Stink”- which it was! Twenty-eight days later the “Minerva lot” boarded the Government brig Victoria with only a 12-foot draught which could safely moor off Howick Beach to unload the Fencibles and families from Auckland. Their boxes filled with clothing and tools were rowed ashore. The next Fencible immigrant ship to arrive was the Sir Robert Sale from Cork, Ireland, escaping from the disastrous Irish Potato Famine when over a million Irish died. After 99 days at sea they arrived in Auckland on October 11, 1847, where they looked forward to fresh meat and fruit. Carpenters off the Minerva, the

Sir Robert Sale along with nine labourers, were selected to help erect two temporary sheds on the Howick Beach flats two weeks before the Fencible families arrived in Howick. One shed was for men, the other for women and children. Soon the Sir George Seymour arrived from London with more Fencibles and families who would be transferred to Owairoa, later called Howick. Within a month there would be more than 900 Fencibles and their families in Howick. Raupo huts were built which shrank and leaked. In July 1848, it snowed in Howick, turning earth floors into thick mud. A few years later, wooden cottages were built. When we visit Howick beach today it is hard to imagine our ancestors arriving by boat for a new life here. Howick was paradise to our early settlers, and beyond their wildest dreams. Many of us also consider ourselves fortunate to live in Howick. Alan La Roche MBE Howick Historian alanlaroche@xtra.co.nz

“Ageing doesn’t go away – you have to front foot it.” A positive and energetic senior, Joyce Kraak believes you have to have a proactive approach to life as you age. That’s why she moved into an independent apartment at HBH Senior Living over five years ago. “I bumped into someone who told me about HBH’s apartments and I thought that would be perfect for me. I didn’t want to buy another house and I wanted something easy,” Joyce explains. “My children were surprised when I said I wished to move, but it was the right thing for me and I’m very happy here. I didn’t want to leave it too late – ageing is not something that goes away, so you have to front foot it! Be proactive and manage it.”

As Joyce discovered, HBH’s apartments offer the best of both worlds: the freedom to live independently, with the reassurance that help is just a call-button away. Ideally located in the heart of Howick, each spacious one or two-bedroom apartment offers a stylish, modern interior, full security and an attractive garden or balcony outlook. Apartments are surprisingly affordable compared to other options in the area, and are owned by residents by way of an Occupational Right Agreement (ORA) with a monthly management fee. Residents can select any or all of HBH’s services, such as activities, outings, meals, or help or care in their own home, plus the apartments are located close to shops, cafes, golf course and other local amenities. And, because maintenance is taken care of, residents have more time to do the things they enjoy.

A B OV E R I G H T: J OYC E K R A A K

“The community at the apartments is very active and I sing in the choir, join exercise groups and go to the café when I can. HBH is like one big family – it is a lovely community,” says Joyce.

astounded at the temerity of an informal protest group now calling themselves the ‘Friends of Erebus Memorial Park’ unilaterally announcing inferior alternative sites for the Erebus National Memorial. It seems so self-serving and arrogantly insensitive to Erebus families and the thorough consultation process undertaken.

IF YOU’RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT…

Rev Dr Richard Waugh Howick

On the morning of 28 November 1979, Air New Zealand flight TE901 left Auckland for a sightseeing flight to Antarctica. At 12.49 p.m. (NZST) the aircraft crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 passengers and crew. 2019 marked the 40th anniversary of the accident and the New Zealand government has undertaken to construct a national memorial that acknowledges the loss to the families and the Image supplied nation.

SITE PROTEST GROUP INSENSITIVE

I was the instigator of the Erebus National Memorial from early 2016, motivated by pastoral support for Erebus families. The advocacy group we formed had no involvement in the subsequent funding, choice of site or design work. Yet at every step of the way we were impressed by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s thorough consultation with all the identifiable Erebus families. Their memorial research included the Auckland location, Parnell site, Te Paerangi Ataata Sky Song chosen design, as well as receiving Ngati Whatua support and blessing of the site to the memory of the Erebus victims.

The Dove-Myer Robinson public park is eminently suitable as it is centrally located, easily accessible and already a place of remembering, with other memorials. The chosen location utilises a steep bank while preserving maximum green space and nearby trees. How appropriate is the nearby aviation ambience; a stone’s throw from Mechanic’s Bay where the first flying boats landed in 1937 linking New Zealand to the outside world and where TEAL/Air New Zealand had their headquarters for many years. From the Erebus memorial site, navigation poles in the harbour from early flying days are still visible. Along with many Erebus families who have contacted me, I am

THE MEMORIAL DESIGN Te Paerangi Ataata - Sky Song was announced as the winning design for the National Erebus Memorial in April 2019 following a national design competition. It was designed by Studio Pacific Architecture in collaboration with artists Jason O’Hara and Warren Maxwell. Te Paerangi Ataata reflects the enormity of the Erebus tragedy without losing the adventurous spirit of the crew and passengers. It’s stainless steel and concrete details evoke the stark beauty of the Antarctic environs. Designed specifically for the proposed site in Auckland’s Dove-Myer Robinson Park, Te Paerangi Ataata; Sky Song’ sits lightly on the landscape. Its location overlooking Waitamata Habour allows for a strong visual connection to the ocean and the distant horizon.

BUS SHELTER FINALLY BACK Finally, after more than three years since an Auckland Transport (AT) bus demolished the bus shelter outside the Prospect of Howick it has been replaced. However, for some unknown reason, AT has decided not to include a seat for waiting passengers. I started communicating with AT on the subject for well over two years and have written again asking why no seat was included in the replacement bus shelter. I have also asked if AT will disclose the total cost of design, fabrication and installation of the new

Re Finland not Nirvana (Deane Smart, Times, November 3). Not for the first time Deane Smart accuses others of curating the data – cherry-picking – to arrive at a desired conclusion. His rebuttal of Gary Hollis’s claim Finns are happier than Kiwis is based on the premise people are either happy or commit suicide. Is that true? Suicide is a very complex issue and happiness is very hard to define, let alone measure. The suicide rate for male Finns is three times females, but has halved since 1990 while the female rate has stayed much the same. What does that tell us? In 2016, the rate for females in NZ was lower than females in Finland, but the rate for males was higher. Normal variation? Confused? Want to phone a friend? Yeah nah. What is the balance of informed opinion? That’s what we need to listen to. Not pot calling the kettle black.

PUBLIC TOILETS LOCKED To the Auckland Council. I was out walking around Eastern beach Thursday morning [Oct 29] and, as usual, needed to pay a visit to the toilets in the car park at the end of the beach. The council have decided to lock them all because there is a bit of a water shortage. What do I do now? I had a very uncomfortable fast walk back to my car and a faster drive back home. The public toilets are not like washing the car or hosing down the driveway. They are an essential health service and should be treated as such. Maybe the council should close all their internal toilets in all their buildings and see how well that works. It’s time to reconsider this policy council.

THANKS TO THE NO VOTERS Randel Case [Times, October 20] uses a ‘God’ argument to support the End of Life Choice Act and suggests that the ‘No’ vote in the referendum “kills everyone’s

choice”. Really? The Act offered one choice, without many of the safeguards offered in the few overseas jurisdictions that have similar regimes. Saying No enables other choices to be properly considered. Choices such as extending palliative care options, addressing the elder abuse rife in New Zealand and caring for those who are at a vulnerable point in their lives. God’s embrace is indeed welcome, especially that of a God who endows us with inherent dignity, love and respect of our choices, regardless of how we face our final moments. Thank you to all those who voted No.

TRUMP - SO MANY DEATHS In response to Ian George’s letter “Trump Has Done So Much” (Times, November 3), I must concur fully. Aiding and abetting the deaths of over 200,000 of your fellow citizens lives is testimony to this. Not a small number by any historical standard. Moreover, there any many examples and stories of those who have perished that have sacrificed much. Donald Trump has sacrificed nothing. And finally, history is strewn with wars based on religion. Biblical virtues are the antithesis of peace. Name me a war not held in the name of religious virtue. It’s plain to see.

T

he recent Skate Competition held to celebrate Barry Curtis skatepark’s 10th birthday had around 40 competitors on the day aged between 6 - 32 from all over Auckland. Some of New Zealand’s best skateboarders were at the event including Lenard Tejada, Cato Dobbs and Shan Foster. Howick Local Board member Mike Turinsky, who has been involved with the skate park community support committee from before the park was built, says he has continued to believe that providing a safe adult presence at the park is vital for the community. “The work of the skate park custodians really pays off and I’m really happy that the board continues to support youth in our community by providing a safe place to recreate. “The custodians are funded through the Howick Local Board and investment that has paid off by producing a positive culture at one of

Auckland‘s premier skate parks.” Simon Thorp, the organiser of the skate competition, says the skate park and its community has been well looked after over the years by Gavin Wharekawa and Jei Sien from Skatepark Maintenance Services. The results of the event, judged by organiser Simon Thorp and Buff Morice, with pro skateboarder Umberto Skinner, on the microphone are:

COMMENT

Boomerang did come back S

nub an Aussie sportsman and he’ll bite you on the bum as the underdog Wallabies did to the not-so-mighty All Blacks at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night. There were no cries for Argentina or New Zealand in this Tri-Nations rugby test as coach Dave Rennie’s Wallabies bounced back from a draw and two Bledisloe Cup hidings to remind the All Blacks they’re not invincible after all. The All Blacks are not arrogant but it seemed our top brass was when it invited “expressions of interest” from some of Australia’s Super Rugby teams for a new competition next year upon making it clear they were not good enough to justify the five Super Rugby Aoteroa catered for. It helped motivate the Wallabies that Australian rugby is desperate for sponsorship to survive. And it helped that the All Black selectors made multiple changes from the side that had walloped the Wallabies by a record 38 points in Sydney a week earlier. No criticism from me for giving every member of their enlarged squad a crack, even though it did show our depth was not as good as some of us have cracked it up to be. As a former schoolteacher who knows how to communicate, Rennie is a smart cookie whom

Graham Henry considered would have made a better choice than Ian Foster as All Black coach, though Foster rightly claims his time as the Chiefs mentor does not define his ability. But having failed in promoting some promising youngsters in Sydney, Rennie made some smart calls in Brisbane by toughening his forward pack and allowing versatile Reece Hodge to run the backline from first-five against Beauden Barrett instead of previous 23 points test hero Richie Mo’ounga. Beauden, like brothers Jordie and Scott, didn’t play badly. But Hodge played better, capping his performance with four penalty goals and a conversion as the Wallabies made their tackles, passed well and ran with a determination not seen since their 16-all drawn first Bledisloe effort in Wellington. In fact it was better, much better, with Hodge’s first perfect chip kick setting up right wing Tom Wright for a try in the opening minutes while on the left, Marika Koroibete was a constant menace in his clash with Sevu Reece. A shame Ofa Tu’ungafasi’s red card saw him replaced by fellow prop Tyrel Lomax, forcing a sharp Akira Ioane off early upon making his starting debut. Hence much of the attack up front was left to Ardie Savea, Sam

CRICKET

Agnew’s Angle Cane and Codie Taylor. Against a solid defence, the backline never gelled beyond the spasmodic bursts of Reece and Rieko Ioane. And a concussed Will Jordan won’t remember his test debut after being concussed within five minutes of him belatedly coming off the bench. In facing Argentina next weekend, the All Blacks need to return stars like Mo’unga, Dane Coles and Caleb Clarke who contributed so much to their Bledisloe Cup success. Having improved so much, Akira Ioane deserves another crack. Furthermore, unlike some scribes, I favour injecting brother Rieko’s try-scoring speed at centre outside the heady Anton Lienert-Brown. Unlike the selectors who favour Jordie Barrett as a wing when brother Beauden plays fullback, I prefer him as a fullback or second-five where he played for Canterbury and NZU21 before heading to the Hurricanes. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
