n a first for New Zealand, a new bridge is being slowly pushed across the Tamaki River as part of the $1.4 billion Eastern Busway. There are four spans and each one is connected to the section behind it. Each launch of the bridge is around 50 metres and will take up to 10 days to inch across the river. Mayor Phil Goff said this con-
struction method is a first for the country and speeds up the assembly. “The first of the steel bridge spans was delivered to the construction site earlier in the year and are the largest single steel spans ever to be fabricated in New Zealand.” The new busway bridge is more than 200 metres in length and contains 1000 tonnes
of steel and 2000 tonnes of concrete. “It’s a feat of engineering and will be an integral part of the completed busway, supporting high frequency bus travel between Panmure and Pakuranga and eventually Botany once the full project is completed in 2025,” said Goff. “Thanks to funding provided through the regional fuel tax,
this project will transform east Auckland and deliver the transport infrastructure needed to accommodate population growth and support the provision of new housing. “Most importantly it will give locals real transport choice and go a long way to easing traffic congestion in the east of our city.” ➤ Turn to page 3

DROUGHT
Water restrictions extended Water restrictions are likely to remain in place this summer. A long-range weather forecast reaffirming earlier predictions of an extremely dry spring means it’s now more important than ever for Aucklanders to save water, says Watercare. Auckland received 40 per cent less rainfall than normal in Auckland between November 2019 and May 2020, making it the region’s worst drought on record. Despite recent rainfall, Auckland’s total dam storage level is currently 60 per cent, when normally at this time of year it would be above 85 per cent. MetService meteorologist Georgina Griffiths says August looks likely to deliver some decent rainfall to Auckland, but that’s where the good news ends. “Our long-range models have always been keen on a drier spring for Auckland. The latest forecasts continue to signal an extended run of well-below-normal rainfall between September and December. The main culprit is expected to be frequent high pressure on our weather maps, meaning a lower turnout for the rain makers. “There is the possibility of tropical storms providing a good dose of rain early next year, but it really is too early to tell, and even if they do arrive, we would need the rain to fall in the right places.” Last month, thunderstorms that flooded the Coromandel and Northland almost missed the Hunua Ranges entirely. ➤ Turn to page 5

t’s all about painting the town blue, said Simon O’ Connor, MP for Tamaki, and MC at Simeon Brown’s campaign launch on Saturday morning. Going from the incredible turnout at the Pakuranga MP’s campaign launch on Saturday morning, it seemed like they were doing just that as the heavy downpour didn’t deter National Party supporters from turning up in large numbers. The mood was upbeat as the Howick Bowling Club was filled with plenty of

good-hearted banter and laughter. A quick-witted O’Connor even joked about invading Brown’s territory with the AMETI project connecting Tamaki to Pakuranga. “We are coming for you Simeon,” he said. On a more serious note, he addressed around 250 supporters saying, “Those who have failed the party are not the best of us. You are. And secondly, it is important to note that no one should put themselves in front of the party.” Both O’Connor and Mark Mitchell MP for Rodney spoke highly about the

We like him. And I said hang on, this is my electorate, you have to vote for me,” he laughed. SFO welcomes court decision I
ndependent Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has been stopped by the High Court from publishing sensitive documents sent to him in error by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). Ross and three others face charges by the SFO over allegations about two $100,000 donations to the National Party. Ross vehemently denies the charges. The case involving donations came to the fore after Ross made it public in 2018 while dramatically exiting the National Party. He made a complaint to the police that was referred to the SFO. The SFO said in a press release last Thursday that it welcomed a court decision confirming the confidentiality of material that was inadvertently disclosed by the agency to the defendants in the National Party donations case. “The material was disclosed recently during the course of the agency’s compliance with its normal disclosure obligations,” the SFO statement said.

Williamson’s LA role ends Former Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson is soon to end his time as Consul-General in Los Angeles. Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters last week announced the appointment of Jeremy ClarkeWatson as New Zealand’s new Consul-General in Los Angeles. Clarke-Watson will take up his role this month, replacing Williamson who was appointed Consul-
General in 2016. Clarke-Watson is a career diplomat who has previously served as New Zealand Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and as the Deputy Head of Mission at the New Zealand Embassies in both Saudi Arabia and Viet Nam. He is currently New Zealand’s Special Envoy for Commonwealth Trade Integration. Two-way trade between New Zealand and the city
of Los Angeles totalled approximately US$2 billion in 2019, with New Zealand exports accounting for over US$1b. Many of New Zealand’s largest exporters active in the United States base their operations in and around Los Angeles. Williamson has been approached for comment.
Bridge creeps forward Independent MP Jami-Lee Ross.
“The SFO acted with an abundance of care in seeking the court order as one of the parties had reportedly expressed an interest in publishing the material. “The agency believes that any publication of the material would have breached the SFO’s secrecy provisions and been contrary to requirements of confidentiality applying to the use of mate-

rial obtained through court proceedings. “However, the SFO sought a court order to ensure there was no doubt that the material remained confidential. The SFO takes every step necessary to protect the security and confidentiality of material received in the course of an investigation.” Ross has been approached for comment.
The bridge runs alongside the existing Panmure Bridge and will include new cycling and walking paths and lookout platforms. AT executive general manager integrated networks Mark Lambert said the public transport, walking and cycling connections will provide greater travel choice. “The busway provides the next critical link in the region’s rapid transit network, linking congestion free busways with the rail network.
“It will also offer better access to viewing opportunities across the awa (river) which is an important historical, environmental and scenic asset for Pakuranga and Panmure,” Lambert said. Stage 1 of the project between Panmure and Pakuranga is due for completion next year and stages 2, 3 and 4 between Pakuranga and Botany will be complete by 2025. The busway bridge will be complete by the middle of next year with stage 1 of the Eastern Busway due to be finished by mid-2021.
Accelerating success.

Fun Pyjama Day raises funds for Santa Parade P
We all know someone deserving in the community, someone who goes that extra mile, or devotes that extra hour or two of their time or is just there when you need support and encouragement.
yjama Day was celebrated at Howick Primary School on Wednesday July 29 with almost the entire school arriving ready for bed. “We heard that the Santa Parade was in jeopardy through the loss of funding and sponsorship so Howick Primary School students rallied with a fabulous day in our pyjamas,” says Howick Primary School principal Leyette Callister. “Teachers and students alike wore their best jim jams and raised $500 to get the ball rolling.”
Thanks to Avenrose Florist and Rices Mall, we’re going to send a bouquet to your community hero – once a month. TRIBUTE
Kyne remembered for her kindness H
owick RSA staff are mourning the loss of former Howick RSA Women’s Section president Marie Kyne. Marie Therese Kyne (nee Mahon), 87, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, July 31, surrounded by family. Over the course of her life, she was a passionate tennis player, golf player, mother, grandmother and member of the RSA and Probus. Margaret Jones, president of the Howick RSA Women’s Section, said Marie had been an RSA member “for a very long time. Marie was on the Women’s Section Committee for a few
years and stepped up when Jess Potter was ill and subsequently passed away and was president for five years. “She was a member of the Pakuranga Tennis Club. She was also Midweek Ladies Convenor when Christine MacIntosh joined over 30 years ago and was still supporting the club with fundraising through champagne breakfasts etc.” Kyne’s NZ Herald death notice said she faced every challenge and celebration with a smile and laugh - a true testament to her attitude and strength until the end. “Marie was the adored wife of Tom Kyne who preceded her

in death, the beloved mother of sons Thomas McGhie, Duncan and Tess McGhie and preceded in death by daughter Anita (Grant) Aspinall. She is also survived by step-children Stacey and Harold, Steve and Jill. A much loved Nan to Cameron, Nick, Matt, Trent, Ryan, Kendyl, Zoe and Kaelyn and a devoted great-grandmother of three,” the notice said. “She will always be remembered for her kindness and ever-present laugh. We will all cherish our memories and carry her close to our hearts. A small, private family cremation and celebration of Marie’s life will be held at Davis Funeral Homes in Pakuranga.”
➤ From page 1 “We can expect some intermittent easterlies, which may bring good amounts of rain, but the Hunua Ranges are often sheltered from these systems.” Watercare head of servicing and consents Mark Bourne, who is coordinating the drought response, says the latest seasonal forecast means outdoor water restrictions will likely continue into summer. “Aucklanders have been making really impressive water savings since restrictions began, and if we can all continue to keep our water usage down, even if we do have a very dry spring, we should start summer with our dams above half full. “We are also making steady progress on a number of projects that will give us an additional 40 million litres a day by Christmas, compared to what we had available last summer. With these new sources, careful management of our existing sources and continued savings by Aucklanders, we expect to avoid the need for more severe restrictions.”
COVID-19
Community-based testing station gone The community-based assessment centre on Botany Rd caused a few issues with traffic. Times photo Wayne Martin
The Botany-based coronavirus community testing centre has gone. The community-based assessment centre (CBAC), which was stationed on Botany Road to test residents who , shut down at the end of July. The CBAC site, which was positioned in front of the Botany Downs Primary Birthing Unit next to East Care, caused significant traffic jams in the last two
months. East Care Group chief executive Gordon Armstrong told the Times East Care will continue to conduct Covid-19 testing from its 24-hour Botany Road clinic in Golflands as it had done throughout lockdown. Armstrong said East Care was well-staffed and had very effective protocols in place. New long-term community testing cen-
tres (CTCs) for Covid-19 are replacing the CBACs in Auckland. Auckland’s four PHOs are introducing more mobile testing units “to provide even easier testing”. The nearest one in this region is the Whanau Ora Community Clinic at 25 Druces Road, Wiri. It opens from 8am-3pm from Monday to Friday and provides drive-through or walkin services.

The new CCTV will include a camera in the all-day carpark in Fencible Drive, coverage across the market area and Uxbridge Road carpark areas (library). The Howick Village Association arranged for additional coverage over the lower carpark behind Kelly Flavell Law in Uxbridge Road and across the carpark at the intersection of Wellington St and Ridge Road. This would not have been possible without the funding assistance from Howick Local Board.

Ron Mark, Minister of Veterans Affairs, advised of 11 further declarations of operational service had been made. This means that those who took part in these deployments will now qualify for support and services from Veterans’ Affairs. “These changes will be welcomed by our veterans and I’m very pleased to have made these decisions, which will affect around 1300 service members,” said Mark. In August last year, the first stage of the review was completed, affecting around 1600 current and former service personnel. The declarations mark the conclusion of the second stage of the review. “This work represents an ongoing commitment to provide support to those who were placed at significant risk of harm while in the service of New Zealand,” said Mark.

Aroha Funerals Takanini: helping families to honour their loved ones
ADVERTORIAL SC4127A
There is an instant sense of serenity and deep comfort that envelopes you like a warm blanket on a cold winter night as you step into the newly-built, spacious Aroha Funerals located at 23 A Tironui Rd, Takanini, A soothing, feminine touch is a standout as one walks into a well-designed lounge with two meeting areas that could be cordoned off for privacy if need be. The meeting area leads to a spacious viewing room which again is flexible and multifunctional. Saying a final goodbye to a loved one is one of the hardest things in life, which is why it is important to have support from funeral directors who are compassionate, committed, professional and sensitive to the bereaved family’s requirements. “It’s not your standard job,” says Janet Mikkelsen who started Aroha Funerals (earlier known as State of Grace East) seven years ago at Mt Wellington. “With a nursing background, Janet worked in paediatric oncology and spent the last seven years of her nursing career in palliative care, looking
after children who were going to die. “I was quite drained after a while and wanted to use my experience in a field where I could continue to look after people,” she says of her switch in career. “The wonderful thing about this job is that you get to be kind to people all the time. While there are hundreds of people at a funeral that all silently want to help, it is a nice feeling to know we can actually help.” Interestingly, they had their first knock on the door even before the final finishing touches to the brand new funeral home in Takanini were complete. Funeral director Robyn Watson was contacted by a family that had dealt earlier with the branch of Aroha funerals at Ellerslie-Panmure Highway. Whilst hesitant initially to bring them to unfinished premises, they said their deceased dad was a builder and would have loved the fact that there was still some building materials around. It is easy to tell that there is something about Aroha Funerals that defi-
From left to right: Lynda Casey, Janet Mikkelsen and Robyn Watson in one of the meeting areas of the lounge. Times photo Wayne Martin nitely sets it apart. It’s not uncommon for people to be shocked when they see an all-women team of funeral directors expertly handle every personalised detail from making all the arrangements that involve catering, florists, priests, celebrants—to looking after the body of the deceased, lifting the coffin and even driving the hearse. “We have a team of people who are
family-focussed, warm, genuine, professional, flexible and strong,” Janet says. “A funeral is unlike any other event; it has to encapsulate so much, in such a short period of time to honour our loved ones in a way that reflects who they were in life. Death and dying is a very emotional and significant time for loved ones.” Robyn adds, “We are also ecofriendly with sustainable caskets and
we prefer to take care of the deceased body naturally. Instead of embalming the body we keep it cool in a cooling room and keep them looking good, including the skin and colour. We’ve done around 200 funerals in the last year and did embalming for only six people -mainly because the body was travelling to another country. “We also encourage family members to wash and dress their loved ones.” While the new funeral home was scheduled to open in March, the launch date was postponed to last week due to Covid-19. The new funeral home that provides bespoke service in Takanini will cater to their clients in Beachlands, Papakura, Maraetai, Whitford, Pukekohe, Kawakawa, Bombay, Waiuku and everywhere in between, helping families to honour their loved ones and farewell them in a very special way. The future of tourism in east Auckland By ANNETTE SMART
E
ast Auckland Tourism has hosted an event at Te Tuhi, Pakuranga. The main focus for the evening was to consider the future of tourism in East Auckland. The two speakers were Christopher Luxon, current National Party candidate for the Botany electorate, and Zac Watson from Auckland economic development agency ATEED. Christopher shared his marketing and tourism expertise from his time in the corporate world and as former CEO of Air New Zealand. His address was motivational and inspiring.
Our second speaker was Zac who updated guests on ATEED’s Auckland Recovery Programme, developed to assist the sector in a post-Covid-19 world, and other initiatives to support tourism/hospitality businesses in the region. The evening ended with East Auckland Tourism’s launch of their new destination videos that promotes the best sites and experiences in the region. These videos were funded by ATEED. Guests attending were from local tourism and hospitality businesses, community groups, stakeholders and local talent who appeared in the videos. Points raised and issues highlighted have provided a new slant
to future planning. East Auckland Tourism will be working to develop a local forum. This group could then work together to plan how best to take East Auckland into the future while effectively promoting its unique key attributes. The more successful and appealing east Auckland is as a visitor destination, the more the regional economy will benefit. We are extremely optimistic about our future and with forward thinking and successful collaboration, our region is set for a thriving future. All smiles, from left to right, Andrew Laing, chairperson for East Auckland Tourism; Cherry Tawhai, East Auckland Tourism Treasurer, Damian Light and Howick Local Board member Bo Burns. RICH TAPESTRY OF MAORI LIFE In his article, Food for longer life; and Maori segregation, in the July 28 issue of the Times, Dr Robert Bartholomew gave the impression that there was racial intolerance against Maori across the country during the ‘segregation’ era. This, he said, was during the period from the 1920s to the 1960s. That statement really hit a nerve for me, as my parents and I had, during those times that Dr Bartholomew mentions, a long and wonderful relationship experience with Maori. Both my parents were teachers in the Nga Kura Maori, the Maori School System (originally the Native School System), which operated for 102 years from 1867 until 1969. I do not have any knowledge of the problems at Pukekohe that Dr Bartholomew mentions, for example, Maori could not use the “white” toilets, could only swim in the baths on Fridays, et al. I started school in 1939 at Kokopu Native School near Whangarei. Although the pupils were mostly Maori, there were many pakeha girls and boys from the local farming communities. At Kokopu, there were absolutely none of the racial restrictions that have been reported as happening at Pukekohe. My mother Molly Kirk (1/8th Maori), prior to getting married in 1934, taught at Kaiaua in the
where those problems were and are of a serious nature. It has no place here. However, my mother’s, my father’s and my personal experiences, left us with the wonderful and meaningful tapestry of Maori life.
Christopher Cameron, Howick
LET ME BREAK IT DOWN
Waikato, Motiti Island, off the coast of Tauranga, and then with my father Les Kirk (100% pakeha) moved to Kokopu, then a twoteacher school. My mother kept comprehensive records of Native School life and it is interesting to note a theme of wonderful Maori/pakeha relationships running through the pages. From local Kaiaua farmers joining with Maori parents to provide meat and vegetables for the school soup, to parents on Motiti Island sharing fishing catches with local farmers, my mother, and the other teacher. I am sad that this, somewhat onesided view of Maori/pakeha relationships, has reared its ugly head again but of course such problems as noted as happening in Pukekohe, unfortunately do occur. The word ‘segregation’ really does bug me as it is a word recently imported into Aotearoa from areas
Re: Can Dennis please settle the dispute? John Rofe (Times, July 28) John Rofe has been searching for the evidence of man-made global warming? Really? On 22/12/19 at 10:48 I received an email from him. Here is a summary: ”You have insufficient knowledge to change my mind – this is the biggest fraud in human history – time for all frauds to be taken down – my objective for 2020 – few real scientific opponents will face up to defend the fraud when legal action begins – you had better have the evidence and show up in court when the battle begins this year.” Nevertheless John Rofe asks me to put him out of his misery by providing empirical evidence that CO2 is responsible for climate change. Without the atmosphere, earth would be – 18C. The non-condensible gases like CO2 and CH4 (methane), plus water vapour (WV) “trap” heat, raising the temperature to +15C. Thousands of surface thermometers and floating/sinking Argo buoys measure Earth’s temperatures, which are on average
rising. Note WV follows the temperature, according to the ClausiusClapeyron equation, and condenses out within 10 days. Satellite measurements show earth is radiating less energy to space, at the frequency CO2 absorbs energy. Plus, the stratosphere is cooling, so there is no “extra” energy coming in. This can only mean earth is retaining more of the “normal” energy from the Sun, due to CO2. First Law of Thermodynamics. As CO2 is added to the atmosphere, the level at which energy is radiated to space rises, where the air is cooler. Stefan-Boltzmann Law states radiation is related to the fourth power of the temperature. Thus to lose the same energy, and earth reach a steady state again, the temperature must rise noticeably.

RACISM REHABILITATED
Consider Barak Obama, the son of Ann Dunham (white) and Barak Obama Snr (black African) – the first black President of the United States. Or Halle Berry, daughter of Jesse Berry (African American) and Judith Hawkins (white) – first African American woman to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her role in Monsters Ball (2001). Or Rachel Meghan Markle, daughter of Doria (African
American) and Thomas Markle (white), the Duchess of Sussex. What they have in common is that all have one black parent and one white parent. Do we judge? What about, Marcia and Millie Biggs, or James and Daniel Kelly? They are non-identical bi-racial twins, one black, the other white; the parents? One black, the other white. After 1948 the Government of South Africa established apartheid. A racial system classifying the population into black, white, Indian and coloured – they should not mix or intermarry. Do we support such classifications and ordinances? SA had an 18-point race colour chart. Will New Zealanders soon need charts to see which lives matter? As an example of the rise of resegregation, there are, by their own request, separate graduation ceremonies for black people at Harvard University. Will NZ soon see separate graduations or other segregations based on race? How quickly we have moved from Stop the Tour to actively supporting proponents of segregation and apartheid slogans. What are the outcomes of racially biased activism like BLM? The history of South Africa informs us. The gold standard is “All lives matter equally”.

ear the kids away from their iPads and plan a trip back in time to the McNicol Homestead Museum in Clevedon. The homestead is a great example of how life once was in the Pohutakawa Coast area. The house and associated grounds is the original 1878 home of the McNicol family who emigrated from Scotland and took up residence in the area. It has been lovingly restored and now contains displays and other items relating to the history of Clevedon and its pioneering families. Marvel at the retro kitchen step inside the 19th century bedrooms and gaze out to the rich pasture beyond. On show is wartime memorabilia collected from locals’ involvement, rugby photos and trophies from

round 56 students from Howick College along with three teachers armed with spades and gumboots got their hands dirty helping Karyn Gradon plant 1220 natives at Mangemangeroa Reserve. The plants were supplied by the Te Whangai Trust. The Times has featured Karyn and her dedication with conservation work in the area that backs onto the Mangemangeroa Reserve. On the last count, the Shelly Park resident had trapped 56 ship rats, five Norway rats, 10 possums, nine hedgehogs and 23 mice. Howick Local Board member John Spiller was very appreciative of her efforts and encouraged Karyn to apply for a Howick Local Board Grant of $5000 to purchase native plants which she received. After planting the first lot of native plants in July 2019 Karyn along with Friends of Mangemangeroa, Howick College students, neighbours from Lot 29 and members of the Te Whangai Trust all got together to plant 1220 native plants on Friday August 7. “Once you remove invasive

SPORTS RESULTS
Weekend footy results RUGBY LEAGUE
➤ Howick 78 Papakura 0 For the second week in a row, the Howick Hornets powered to a comfortable victory-this time over Papakura. The win was highlighted with a double to returning prop Tony Tuia. The Hornets scored early and were always in control, with the win lifting them to sixth position on the ladder. ➤ Pakuranga 26 Manurewa 34 Manurewa secured a crucial
win over Pakuranga at Ti Rakau Park which sees them jump past the Jaguars into third place on the second division ladder. Andrew Tusiane grabbed a double in the win, with Pakuranga scoring a couple of tries late to give the Marlins a scare.
RUGBY UNION
Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) premiers had a big win over Manukau 59-3. Director of coaching Pita Alatini
said, “Two great games of footy over the weekend, the first was Pakuranga over Manukau by 59 points to 3, some of you may think that it was a hiding and it was down to poor opposition but the reality is Manukau had apparently targeted this game as one to win to put their own season on track. “The first 20 minutes were brutal and showed on the score board with a half-time score of 17 points to 3.
More photos @ www.times.co.nz
“The second half showed the cohesion that the coaches had been looking for with PURC putting phases together and taking the game to Manukau to come away with not only the win but importantly improved their potentially crucial points differential, which lifted the Access Solutions Premiers to 30 points and third on the table.” George Taina had a great day out collecting two tries and kicking 7 conversions and a penalty for 27
points. “Player of the day was Dwayne Polataivao who stood out whilst playing out of position in the first half at inside centre before reverting back to his more familiar halfback role,” said Alatini. “His defence was outstanding in the midfield against his opposite who was twice his size and three times his weight.” The Pakuranga Puma’s development side (pictured) also had a win against Manukau Rovers 26-5.

Talented footballer heads to U.S. By JIM BIRCHALL

ormer St Kentigern student Arzan Todywalla is off to further his football aspirations after being offered a scholarship at St Mary’s College in Moraga, California. Good enough to trial for Birmingham City as a youngster in 2014, Todywalla is hoping to make a career in professional football after completing his studies offshore. He also works part time as a salesman at a local Noel Leeming store. Todywalla is a talented all-round sportsman having represented New Zealand in the Oceania Futsal (indoor soccer) competition in 2017. Todywalla leaves this week for California, then on to his home for the next four years, and the Times caught up with him just before he boarded the plane for San Francisco. When asked about travelling to a country struggling to contain
Arzan Todywalla in action.
Covid-19, Todywalla said the university has put excellent measures in place. He will still have to self-

isolate on-campus for 14 days upon his arrival. The undergraduate finance
programme he will be studying is a four-year commitment and Todywalla said he will be looking
to “work his way into the top side” after linking up with his new teammates and assimilating to the methods of head coach Adam Cooper. The St Mary’s soccer programme is highly regarded in US soccer circles and the school has won its regional conference more than once. The fall season starts in September so Todywalla will be straight into practice and games post-isolation. He becomes the third Kiwi on the team roster alongside Sebastian Schacht and Boyd Curry. Long term, Arzan says he would love to be picked up by a major league soccer side at the end of the four years at college. He added that he is appreciative of those who have helped him on his footballing journey to date. “I’m grateful to all my coaches and family and friends as, without their support, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve it.”

that form to help him in his clash with Mo’unga who continues to be Aotearoa’s champion first-five. That’s a challenge two- time World Player of the Year Barrett should relish to silence those critics who have prematurely written him off. True, he hasn’t consistently matched the class of Mo’unga, but he’s far from a spent force. Still he needs to prove it against the Crusaders wizard because his
versatility doesn’t guarantee him the option of the fullback berth ahead of in-form brother Jordan and Damian McKenzie. Should the All Black selectors be searching for a really fast centre, they will relish the chance to compare Ennor against the thrust of Rieko Ioane. Bridge and Reece are worthy All Black wings but there’s also much to like about rising star Caleb Clarke.
With the Highlanders winning fast ruck ball and Aaron Smith distributing it beautifully, it was only in the final quarter the Crusaders hit the front, scoring three of their four tries, two within three minutes to wing Bridge. The Highlanders managed three, the best a full length of the field intercept runaway by Jona Nareki after impressive flanker Shannon Frizell crashed over for the first early. Although forced to play second fiddle to Mo’unga, young Josh Ioane produced much the same gifts of vision, elusiveness and timely passes that has made the Crusader maestro such a major force. With a North versus South match to be resurrected after too long in limbo, the local derbies of Super Rugby Aotearoa have given the national selectors a wonderful

insight into the talent available. There is some amazing talent, especially in the loose forwards and backs where there is so much depth. Meanwhile having been the only team to beat the defending ANZ champion netball side, the Centra Pulse, 44-42, the much-improved Northern Mystics fell once again to the Mainland Tactics 43-44 in yet another nail-biting thriller. Patience and the ability to retain possession were keys to the Tactix success when sensational Mystics goal shoot Grace Nweke was reduced to 37 goals from 42 attempts, including the last five of the match despite the doublemarking of Silver Fern Jane Watson and fiesty Temalisi Fakahokotau. Without injured goal attack Bailey Mes, too much expectation is placed on Nweke who leaps high to catch the bullet passes of wing attack Peta Toeava. However she has responded magnificently for one so young. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
TEACHING STYLE:
Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

aving already clinched their fourth consecutive Super Rugby championship in Christchurch at the weekend against the gutsy Highlanders, the Crusaders will treat this Sunday’s last game against the Blues at Eden Park as though it were a final. So they should because the Blues are the most improved team in the competition, having moulded a powerful scrum that should severely test the Crusaders’ renowned technique and muscle. Matching their cohesion and bettering a lineout in which Sam Whitelock reigns supreme will be more difficult but the Blues don’t lack courage, commitment and exciting game-breakers. Ditto the Crusaders when you look at the backline class of Richie Mo’unga, Jack Goodhue, Braydon Ennor, George Bridge, Sevu Reece and Will Jordan. With Finlay Christie having bettered brilliant Highlander halfback Aaron Smith recently, Beauden Barrett will be hoping he retains
