Almost $30 million of state houses were built in the Howick Local Board area in 2018/2019. AMETI roadwork delays unacceptable Delays caused by lane closures for the AMETI/Eastern Busway construction have been unacceptable says Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. “Lane closures this week to complete major works have caused significant delays for commuters getting to work or getting home with reports of traffic taking an hour from Panmure to Pakuranga, a distance of only 2km,” he says.

LOOKING BACK 2020 – FEBRUARY Top in the world for Ethan

Not a single face mask available at local pharmacies

Saint Kentigern College Year 11 student Ethan Fung has been awarded a joint equal ‘Top in the World’ for Cambridge IGSE Mathematics. In the past, middle school students who had been accelerated in mathematics and had completed the Year 10 course as a Year 9, were offered the opportunity to sit the Cambridge exams in Year 10, prior to embarking on their senior school courses.

Medical facemasks have sold out in some local retail outlets as fears mount over the spread of the deadly coronavirus that has killed more than 811 people in China and infected 37,198 at the last count. The death toll has surpassed that of the SARS epidemic, which also began in China, killing 774 people worldwide.

PM: Public funeral service for Mike Moore

A local Pakuranga cricket fan was excited to meet his heroes on Sunday (January 26) when he joined Captains Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli for the pre-match coin toss on the pitch prior to the Blackcaps vs India match. Eight-year-old Sachetan Ippa, who attends Pakuranga Heights School and plays for Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club, won the ANZ competition to be the Coin Toss Kid which involved joining the two team captains on the pitch before the match.

Tapped to be a Dancer of the Year

Botany Downs Secondary College student Jessica Wang has been declared an overall winner of the Showcase Dance Competition national finals and is particularly proud of the fact that she is the only tap dancer to win the top prize. Award-winning dancer 12-year-old Jessica has qualified for the World Dance Movement, an international dance championship to be held in Photo supplied Rome, Italy in June.

Journey from extreme poverty to hope From heartbreak, loss and extreme poverty to hope, peace and happiness all because one 15-year-old girl decided to sponsor a child. A former-sponsored child from Uganda lost all hope of a life worth living after his father was brutally murdered, plunging his family into extreme poverty, but a teenage changed his life. In a series of free events, Richmond Wandera is sharing his inspirational story in Auckland – including Beachlands and Manukau – on behalf of Tearfund from February 15 to 20.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a funeral service for former Labour Prime Minister Mike Moore whose home was in Maraetai. A public service will be held on Friday, February 14 at 2pm at Dilworth School senior campus, 2 Erin Street, Epsom.

Avenger coming to Warbirds Ardmore

Warbirds On Parade is set to become even more of an exhilarating air show with a 1945 Grumman TBM-3E Avenger, affectionately known in Warbirds circles as Plonky, having now been confirmed to make a special guest appearance at the NZ Warbirds Association air show at Ardmore in March.

The Serious Fraud Office has filed criminal charges against four people in relation to donations paid into a National Party electorate bank account. Last year police referred Botany MP JamiLee Ross’ complaint about National’s election donations to the Serious Fraud Office. Ross, who was kicked out of the National Party in 2018, lodged a complaint with police in the same year.

Neighbours are at the end of their tether after a year of torment living next to a building site on Union Road in Howick. Two neighbours say they have had a gutsful of the excessive noise coming from the site outside of the development’s hours of consent. One woman is so incensed she is moving out of her flat next-door and she claims her neighbour moved out six weeks ago, and another across the road from the site “sold and moved because of this”.

LOOKING BACK 2020 – MARCH Brown takes a plucky sixth at Ironman NZ

Local man jailed for child abuse imagery A Howick man has sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for knowingly possessing and distributing child sexual abuse imagery and blackmail. Thirty-year-old Earl Gary Chatterton was sentenced at Manukau District Court last Wednesday to four years and nine months in prison. Chatterton admitted 26 charges involving the distribution and possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation imagery and one charge of blackmail.

Legendary ironman triathlete Cameron Brown wants to continue racing until he is 50! Brown, 47, from Dannemora, made the comment after a creditable sixth place in Ironman New Zealand on March 7. He has won Ironman NZ 12 times. He was positive about his finish given that his training was curtailed after an injury.

Family grateful for support after fire

It was her grand-daughter’s scream that alerted Bev Lowson to the fire which would eventually destroy their house. Bev was looking after her four-year-old granddaughter Imi and 17-month-old Aneska on the morning of March 6 at their rental in Golflands while her daughter Tamlyn Boddington had taken her six-year-old Caris to the doctors.

Formosa Golf Club sold

Restaurant owner jailed A co-owner of the Masala Restaurant chain has been jailed for hiding millions of dollars in cash sales and laundering large amounts of it. Rupinder Singh Chahil – who resided in Howick – was sentenced today at the Auckland High Court to three years and two months in prison, plus a $50,000 fine, on nine money laundering charges and 34 tax evasion charges.

The NZ Super Fund and parties associated with Russell Property Group have agreed to buy a significant waterfront land holding in Beachlands which includes the Formosa Golf Course. The partnership, Beachlands South LP, will be a separate venture to the limited partnership NZ Hotel Holdings Asset LP established last year to acquire hotel assets.

PM: We’re going into lock-down

The Cabinet met this morning (March 24) to discuss our next actions in the fight against Covid19. Like the rest of the world, we are facing the potential for devastating impacts from this virus. But, through decisive action, and through working together, do we have a small window to get ahead of it. On Saturday I announced a Covid-19 alert level system and placed New Zealand at Alert Level 2. I also said we should all be prepared to move quickly. Now is the time to put our plans into action. That’s why Cabinet met today and agreed that effective immediately, we will move to Alert Level 3 nationwide. After 48 hours, the time required to ensure essential services are in place, we will move to Level 4.

Grangers Point development in the works

“A child could be killed”: School at wits’ end with AT Te Uho o Te Nikau school principal Mel Bland is exasperated by lack of action from Auckland Transport over a temporary pedestrian bridge and the implementation of digital speed signs, saying “a child could be killed” if measures are not put in place immediately.

A fully upgraded Granger Point could be the jewel in the Bucklands Beach area’s crown. Grangers Point is poised for future development as the Howick Local Board, Auckland Transport (AT) and Auckland Council consider addressing better beach side paths and solving coastal erosion by restoring the popular Bucklands Beaches.

Covid-19 panic buying eases Coronavirus hysteria has seen many Auckland supermarkets overwhelmed around Auckland the past couple of weeks – and some east Auckland supermarkets weren’t immune. The panic-buying gained momentum as the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases grew. Five have been confirmed thus far.

Stabbing in Shelly Park

Police are investigating a stabbing incident at a reserve on Cyclades Place in Shelly Park on Friday night. Local residents reported a “car speeding down the road” at around 10pm on February 28. This was followed by “yelling and screaming... and a person yelling for help.”

LOOKING BACK 2020 – MAY Food donations: Sunnyhills locals show altruism in time of need

Bring on Level 2!

As Prime Minister Jacinda Arden made the most awaited announcement yesterday (May 11) about moving to Level 2, the Times spoke to an array of businesses in the Howick and Botany areas to find out how businesses in Level 2 will operate.

Eyewitnesses report fireball ‘crashing’ into river

Several Pakuranga residents have reported seeing a bright flash of light or a “fireball” above the Tamaki River near Waipuna Bridge. The sightings happened at around 6.47pm on Monday, May 25.

Ross looks to set up new political party Rogue independent Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is looking at starting a new political party. Tentatively given the working name Advance NZ, Ross has floated the idea to his email database. “Will you join with me to help start a new political movement to put forward new ideas in this election?

Sunnyhills residents Kath and Mark Bason were amazed at the level of generosity displayed by caring east Aucklanders for the trailer donation day, to benefit Mangere Budgeting Services.

The Rotary Club of Howick Community Trust and club members have joined forces with the Thomas Brydon Trust to help local organisations provide food parcels to needy families in the Howick area.

Police: No parties – no excuses

Police are urging people to resist the temptation to socialise in gatherings that breach the Alert Level 3 restrictions. Since the introduction of the Alert Level 3 restrictions, police have received 1200 reports from the public to the 105 breach notification line in regard to mass gatherings.

Concerns over congregation as city returns to life Mayor Phil Goff is calling on Aucklanders to continue to follow social distancing rules as the city gets busier. Images of people congregating, and not socially distancing, as they pick up takeaways and visit parks or beaches are of concern.

Heartwarming: Council’s outreach effort to over 70s Auckland Council Libraries staff have made around 15,000 welfare calls to over-70-year-olds living alone over the past fortnight as part of the council and Auckland Emergency Management’s Covid-19 response.

LOOKING BACK 2020 – JUNE What Alert Level 1 will mean

Sandspit Rd development fight continues

It’s been a long time coming but everything Kiwis have done over the past couple of months means New Zealand is finally able to return to something closely resembling normality while the Covid-19 pandemic continues to impact many other countries. The Government last week outlined what life at Alert Level 1 will look like for New Zealand and New Zealanders.

An on-going dispute between the developer of a proposed controversial residential development in Cockle Bay has reared its head again. The developer has submitted a new consent application for a scaled-down version of 54 units – as opposed to 71 in an earlier submission – to be erected on the old Steward Motors site on Sandspit Road. The land is zoned for nine single houses.

Tornado whips through ET ‘Emergency Budget is a lose-lose for Pakuranga’ Auckland Council has released its Emergency Budget (May 29) in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, and amongst its cost-saving proposals comes an impossible choice for residents in Pakuranga, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga. The council is proposing two main options for handling the economic recovery in Auckland: a rate increase of 3.5 per cent with a smaller number of spending cuts, or an increase of 2.5 per cent with a larger range of austerity measures.

A tornado struck businesses in Allens Rd East Tamaki around 9am on Saturday causing substantial damage to Elite Bathroomware and neighbouring Fyfe Kitchens. Caused by unusually warm and humid air mixing with cold, the tornado ripped out the whole front of the Elite building leaving an exposed shell.

Rare photos that capture the unforgettable stories of human courage and fateful moments told through the lens of New Zealand soldiers during the Korean War are currently on display at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick. The war photo exhibition titled Forever Peace commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Korean War.

Midnight Madness, the long-running annual promotion in which Howick retailers stay open late into the evening, has been canned. The Howick Village Association’s manager Jane Newbury said the HVA made the ‘difficult decision’ not to proceed with Midnight Madness 2020 following ‘in-depth discussions’ with police and results from its recent event survey. “This decision was made to alleviate the major issue of teenage antisocial behaviour and drunkenness, experienced at our events in 2018 and 2019,” Newbury said.

I think people who flee isolation are absolute fools. It’s very irresponsible,” she says.

East Care’s overnight service is closing on Saturday, December 19th. Our new hours will be 7am-11pm every day, including weekends and all public holidays. It is with enormous regret that we’re having to close this important overnight service, after 24 years of serving the community 24/7. However, long term underfunding and a subsequent lack of clinical resources has meant we can no longer safely service the substantial overnight need. We know how significant this change will be to our community who have heavily utilised the service, and who also appreciate how hard our staff have worked to care for them. Our new hours will reduce clinical risk and relieve the extra pressures and demands that our overnight service has required of our health professionals. Whilst our hours will be changing, our long term commitment remains focused on providing the highest quality urgent care and support which our patients in east and south Auckland deserve.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed the General Election will be held on October 17, a move welcomed by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. “Moving the date by four weeks also gives all parties a fair shot to campaign and delivers New Zealanders certainty without unnecessarily long delays,” Ardern said. “With the re-emergence of Covid-19 in our community, these are not ordinary times.”

Schools prepared for students after lockdown

Some parents are apprehensive about children returning to school after the second round of Alert Level 3 lockdown. Steven Hargreaves, principal of Macleans College and president of the Auckland Association Principals Association (ASSPA), says it is understandable that some parents are nervous about sending their children to school while there is still some Covid-19 community transmission. The year 2020 has been a complete write-off for many local businesses as they reel under the devastating impact of coronavirus. Talking about how hard they have been hit, Clive Thompson, owner of the Barrel Inn, says his business has been impacted 100 per cent since it’s been closed over these two lockdowns. “2020 has been a complete non-starter for us. The money is gone, it’s lost. We can’t make up for it,” says the Irish pub owner.

Anderson Rocio: songwriter finds Paradise in Lucifer When the prolific songwriter and pop singer Anderson Rocio was told by Think Music Inc, a licensing agency in Los Angeles that Paradise the song she wrote, features in the fifth episode of Lucifer season five, currently screening on Netflix (premiered on August 21) she was over the moon! Staff and students at Pakuranga College are looking forward to the completion of an additional school building, due to take place in 2021. The two-storey block will house 12 new classrooms and is currently under construction adjacent to Pakuranga Road.

Board divided over asset sales

Building of new church on target

Members of the Howick Local Board were divided over a plan to raise money by selling a number of Auckland Council-owned properties in East Auckland. The board’s members took part in an at times contentious debate on the issue during their business meeting last month which was conducted online due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Fr Craig Dunford, parish priest of St Luke’s Church, Chapel Road, is excited about the progress on the building of the new church, despite the lockdown. “The roof was finally put on and we are well on target. As planned, the church will be fully built by April next year,” says Fr Dunford.

Lenise Jean Farrow, nee Crawford, from one of Howick’s pioneering families, has died. She passed away on September 16, aged 95. Her great grandfather John Crawford established a transport business in 1851, sailing a scow from Howick to Auckland.

An investigation is under way into what led to the deaths of dozens of eels in an east Auckland waterway. Burswood resident Paul Taylor posted photos on social media on December 14 of what he says were more than 30 dead eels in the upper estuary in Huntington Park, near Ti Rakau Drive. He reported the find to Auckland Council, which is working to identify what caused the eels’ death. “Local children feed the eels,” Taylor told the Times. “I was told of the incident from neighbours who had first seen them and then went up to investigate.”

has been self-funding the overnight service for the past two years since Counties Manukau District Health Board cut its funding. They say they will write to the health board’s chief executive, Margie Apa, to ask to meet with her to raise the community’s concerns and to request funding be reinstated urgently so the overnight service can be re-established. “We would like to thank East Care for their commitment to providing the overnight service to east Auckland and the fact they have been subsidising this service for

the past two years without funding from our DHB,” the MPs say. “East Care is a critical part of the east Auckland community which has gone above and beyond this year, particularly with Covid-19. “East Auckland is now the only area in Auckland without an overnight service, despite having over 130,000 people and one of the fastest growing populations in New Zealand.” Brown and Luxon say the overnight service is “critically important” to the local community. It’s the highest volume provid-

O

er of overnight primary care in Auckland, they say. “Its closure will also certainly have a significant impact on the accident and emergency department at Middlemore Hospital.” Armstrong says the overnight service got off the ground without external funding. In 2014 the DHB gave it financial support as a regional initiative to provide access to overnight care and maintain financial viability in the face of increasing healthcare costs. The DHB reversed course in 2018. ➤ Turn to page 3

People with information on what may have caused the death of dozens of eels in a waterway in Huntington Park can phone Auckland Council on 301 0101 and give the reference number 8110363397. The Department of Conservation has been contacted for comment.

MPs fight for medical service ast Auckland’s two local MPs have launched a petition in an effort to keep East Care Accident and Medical’s long-running overnight service operating. Longfin eels can be found throughout the country. “There are fewer eels today because of the loss of wetlands and historical commercial fishing

The council updated him that staff had visited the site and taken some eels away for analysis. He says he’s pleased with how quickly the council responded to the situation. Photos taken by the Times of the estuary show multiple dead eels of different lengths, as well as a fish, floating near the water’s surface. One image shows a dead eel surrounded by rubbish including what appears to be about 20 small pieces of plastic. Council team leader compliance response south Dirk Timp says the council’s compliance team visited the site to investigate after receiving a report of dead eels in the waterway.

Alan Breslau: legend transformed lives globally

Alan Jeffry Breslau’s undying, resilient spirit was shining bright at the celebration of his life at St Andrew’s Church, Howick, on December 5. The founder of the Phoenix Society for Burns survivors, who passed away on November 26 at the age of 94, had glowing tributes from thousands of people worldwide.

Family’s tribute to theatre legend Gair McRae’s legacy lives on in the thousands of young people she trained, encouraged, mentored and inspired. The well-known and widely respected figure of east Auckland’s arts community died in Middlemore Hospital on November 21 after suffering a stroke earlier that morning. She was 79.

Ormiston Town Centre’s grand unveiling is just months away. “After two years of construction, we are almost done,” said Sean Leonard, Todd property Development Manager at the get-together held on Thursday to keep the community informed about the progress Ormiston Town Centre is making. The mood was festive at The Market, a new covered space created to provide a blank canvas for the community talent and market events to be showcased.

Memorial unveiled to athletics legend

The late Dick Quax is being publicly honoured for his numerous political and athletic accomplishments. Two interpretative signs have been installed along a stretch of the Rotary Walkway in Pakuranga to pay tribute to the man known as the “Flying Dutchman” for his sporting achievements and lengthy civic duty. Police ‘continuing to make progress’ Police are continuing to make progress in the homicide investigation currently underway in Sunnyhills. “Formal identification procedures have now been completed and we have formally identified the victim as 55-year-old Ying Zhong, also known as Elizabeth,” said Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers, Counties Manukau CIB.

Water restrictions adjusted for summer Auckland Council has voted to adjust the city’s water restrictions. From December 14 residents will be able to use hand-held hoses fitted with trigger nozzles, but people are still urged to use water wisely as the water shortage continues.

Ho Ho Ho Howick It was pretty windy but it was warm and fine – except for the tiniest of sprinkles late in the afternoon – which is all the Howick Santa Parade organiser Bo Burns and her helpers could have asked for. Thousands of families turned out for the parade with many turning up early for the pre-parade entertainment on Picton Street. The winning float was Howick Pakuranga & Bucklands Beach Playcentre’s wonderful underwater-themed entry. Second was Cockle Bay Primary featuring a gorgeous Christmas tree and third was Dance First centred around a lotus flower.
