duced and developed in partnership with Times Media, the official news media partner for Howick 175. Rev Dr Richard Waugh, chair of the Howick & Districts 175th Anniversary Celebrations 1847 to 2022 Steering Committee, is delighted to announce the arrival of the website after the recent five-
week level-four lockdown. “With the launch of the www. howick175.co.nz website, it signals the real start of our building up momentum towards next year, our 175th anniversary for Howick, from when the first Fencibles and their families arrived in the area. “The intention for the website
is to have it as the focal point for Howick 175 interest and activities. There are opportunities for everyone to get involved in and enthusiastic about next year as our empowering slogan is Celebrating Together,” Waugh says. “We as a committee fully understand and acknowledge that Maori
and the iwi of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki lived on this land before the first European immigrants. “When the Fencibles arrived on this peninsula in 1847 they were welcomed. The community we now have was grown from a friendly relationship. ➤ Turn to page 5

The Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) has launched an apprenticeship programme, looking to connect local businesses with potential apprentices. The brainchild of PURC rugby director Grant Henson, it has been developed after Henson discovered the desire for many school leavers to get into trades. “In my role I am talking to a lot of school leavers about their plans next year. port our advertisers and local businesses. I feel so sorry for the organisers of events that are traditions in our area and the doubt as to whether these are going to happen or not. Last week the Howick Village Association cancelled the Village Hop, now a real crowd pleaser but not this year. In this issue we share with you the launch of the Howick and Districts 175th anniversary website to celebrate next year’s big event but this is now months behind.
I was surprised to read that our area is not up in the 90 per cent group of those with double vaccinations so come on East Auckland, let’s bring this lockdown to an end. I am so pleased to say that all our team is fully vaccinated. We do really appreciate our readers and your support. At this level we are still not working in the office and we’re really looking forward to when we can open our doors again. Reay Neben is Times Media’s managing director

Big vax push, ‘Every single dose counts’ By CHRIS HARROWELL
M
ayor Phil Goff is hailing a major milestone in New Zealand’s ongoing fight against Covid-19. Goff says 85 per cent of eligible Aucklanders have now received the first dose of the Pfizer Covid vaccine. However there’s still 15 per cent, or more than 200,000 eligible super-city residents, who need to get vaccinated so they’re protected in time for Christmas, he says. “It’s great to see so many Aucklanders stepping up to protect their families and their communities from Covid-19 by getting vaccinated.” Goff says good work is being done by the staff operating vaccination buses which jabbed 480 people at an Auckland school in recent days including a large percentage from the city’s Maori and Pasifika communities. “Also congratulations to the South Seas Pasifika health provider for vaccinating around 5500 people at the Vodafone Events Centre [in Manukau] over the last week,” Goff says.
The Government is staging a mass Covid-19 vaccination event on October 16. Pictured is Bruce McLaren Retirement Village resident Marilyn Johnson receiving a vaccine dose. Times file Wayne Martin
“Eighty five per cent of the eligible Auckland population vaccinated is a good number, but we need to get it higher in the fight against Delta.” Goff says anyone who’s not yet vaccinated needs to get it done “as soon as possible”. “If you want to be sure of protecting your family, friends and loved ones this Christmas, you need to have your first dose by the end of October. “If you’ve had your first dose, the Government is now recom-
mending you get your second dose three weeks after your initial vaccination. “Vaccination will also be required at high-risk events from November, such as festivals and concerts, and is likely to be required by bars, cafes and restaurants.” Meanwhile, the Government is staging a “National Day of Action” on October 16 to encourage people to get vaccinated against the virus. Covid-19 Response Minister
ELAINE MARGARET BROWN, JUNE 23, 1943-OCTOBER 4, 2021
Chris Hipkins says with more half the eligible population now fully vaccinated and more than 80 per cent with at least one dose, everyone has to do their bit to reach the remaining 20 per cent. “We’ve got a plan and to make it work we’re asking everyone to contribute to a big, nationwide push for vaccination. “This will culminate in a National Day of Action for vaccination on Saturday October 16. On that day, we’ll have vaccine clinics open throughout Aotearoa all day and into the evening. “A bit like election day, we’ll be asking all our political and civic leaders to contribute to a big collective effort to turn people out.” Hipkins says there are 350,000 vaccination appointments available online at bookmyvaccine.covid19.health.nz. “That doesn’t include general practices, where more than 20 per cent of people are getting their vaccines. “Work is being done with district health boards now to increase capacity even further.”
It is with great sadness that during this latest Covid-19 lockdown, the Times Media team received news that former, respected staff member Elaine Brown passed away at the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village in Howick where she had been a resident since 2014. Formerly a Pakuranga resident, Elaine was a sales consultant with Times Newpapers for nearly 20 years. She was, at first, a familiar sight in the Remuera/ Newmarket area where she represented our Bays & Remuera Times publication and then, in both Pakuranga and Howick, becoming well-known and well-liked as Howick’s dedicated ‘local rep’ for the Howick and Pakuranga Times. A keen participant in all Times endeavours, she was a member of the company’s business house bowls team, playing annually at the Bucklands Beach Bowling Club for many years. Times Media managing director Reay Neben says Elaine is warmly remembered by her colleagues as honest and hard-working, caring, generous and fun-loving with a deep and abiding Christian faith. She is survived by her three children, Stephen, Joanne and Greg and her seven grandchildren.

HOWICK 175 GOES LIVE ➤ From page 1
“One of the big opportunities we have with the website is we’re going to make it possible for residents to tell their own stories and that of their families. “We have had respectful and helpful meetings with the leadership of Ngai Tai over the past year as we started planning Howick 175. Mana whenua wishes us well for our endeavours and there is an invitation for Ngai Tai to have their stories published on the website.” PJ (Phil) Taylor, the Howick 175 media and communications co-ordinator, says the committee of volunteer community leaders, advocates and contributors believes commemoration year is the perfect time as the collective Howick Ward community to “acknowledge and recollect
our past and where we’ve come from”. “It’s also about celebrating and recognising who we are and the wonderful life we have in one of the best places to live in the world,” says Taylor. “Build on our strong community spirit and pride as a platform
for a positive, resilient and supportive future, especially when you consider what we’ve all been through over the past 18 months with the pandemic. “One of the leading reasons why the Howick 175 trustees and committee have decided to encourage residents to commemorate the area’s 175th anniversary is to make it possible for many of the older folks to have an opportunity to celebrate what they’ve contributed to their communities over many years, with a lot of those good deeds being voluntary service. “The Howick Ward’s population is also one of the most ethnically diverse in New Zealand. The spirit of Howick 175 is all about celebrating who we are and getting to know each other more,” Taylor says.
Phil Taylor and Richard Waugh say the new website www.howick175.co.nz will be the main information source for Howick’s 175th anniversary storytelling, events and activities. Times photo Wayne Martin

Person dies in road crash
An investigation is under way to determine the circumstances that led to a fatal road crash in east Auckland on October 11. A police spokesperson says a person died following a serious crash involving two vehicles on Highbrook Drive in East Tamaki at about 6.20am.
“Sadly one person has died at the scene,” police say. “Another person in the vehicle has been taken to hospital in a serious condition, while their passenger sustained moderate injuries.” Counties Manukau Police’s serious crash investigation unit attended the
scene and part of Highbrook Drive was closed to motorists while the area was examined. Diversions were put in place and motorists were advised to take an alternative route or avoid the area if possible. A spokesperson for St John Ambulance says its

The top requests for service to Auckland Council for our local area this month were for general tree maintenance, structural maintenance and repairs as well as loose litter. These requests were predominately received during the days where the large storm passed through Auckland causing large amounts of damage to trees and their surrounding structures. The arborist and maintenance team were quick to act on those that were more critical and posed health and safety threats. Auckland Council contractors were on site in a timely manner to either secure the area or return the asset back to

IMPROVING OUR TREE COVER
Auckland’s Ngahere strategy is well under-way in the Howick Local Board area. From the beginning of August up until the current lockdown, 59 trees had been planted to improve the canopy cover within the local board area. Tree planting not only has aesthetic benefits, but mature trees are able to provide shade for local residents, food and home for many birds, as well as helping combat climate change.
VANDALISM
After vandalism to the slide at Mission Heights Reserve, a new slide has now been installed. This park is regularly used by local residents of the area. Sadly, there’s also been vandalism to some benches and tables at Eastern Beach. This is a popular location and with the summer months getting closer, contractors have done a full replacement of the damaged assets by installing new ones like-for-like.
KEEPING SAFE ON OUR ROADS
Hopefully our youngsters will return to school on October 18 after the school holidays.
Please drive slowly and carefully around our community, especially near schools. Your vigilance and safe driving is important as children, and the elderly, readjust to being out and about again.
HAVING YOUR SAY
We encourage our community to take part in opportunities to provide feedback so please visit the council’s website and provide your thoughts. You can also read feedback on previous topics. Go to www. akhaveyoursay.nz. Stay safe and well.

Spring is a perfect time to touch up the exterior and the interior of your home. After a long winter, the exterior of your home is a bit stressed out and needs some tender loving care, which will add to your home value and appeal. As the spring to-do list around the home builds up, refreshing the interior and exterior becomes a top priority. Naturally, a fresh coat of paint is often the way to go. But with spring being the prime time for recreation, homeowners who prefer to enjoy their spare time relaxing, may be better off leaving their painting jobs to the experts from East Auckland Painting Ltd. Greg Mustill employs an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until suddenly one is confronted by a big and costly bill to put things right.” Greg says now is the ideal time for painting houses, fences, garages and other buildings. “We tackle every job, no matter how big or small, with the same thorough professionalism, starting with proper surface preparation and undercoating then carrying through to the final topcoat and finish.” As an added bonus for customers, East

owick building company Faulkner Construction has picked up three gold awards at the 2021 Master Builders Auckland House of the Year Awards. The company set a new standard of achievement at the awards – held just before lockdown – for its crew of 25 carpenters receiving three golds across three separate categories with projects led by three different foremen. It adds to a long list of award picked up over the years in the House of the Year awards. Meanwhile Evolution Builders picked up four awards including the Supreme Award, New Home over $2 million Gold Award, Regional Category Award and the Craftsmanship Excellence Award for its work on an Eastern Beach home. Evolution Builders, co-founded in 2001 by Craig Parker of Beachlands and Brent Varley (Westmere). A description of the build reads: “Has a ‘simple timber box’ ever looked so good? The concept was the starting point for this sublime 435sqm home with intricately detailed exterior screens. Downstairs, the living areas are elevated on a concrete platform so the owners can see the beach across the road. Floorto-ceiling glass windows and doors connect to the outdoors and the back of the house opens to a walled garden containing a pool and orchard.” Faulkner Construction’s Adriaan Kant received a gold award in the Resene New Home over $2 Million category. He puts the firm’s success down to two key factors – a relentless expectation for quality and a deep passion for building. From the start of his time with Faulkner Construction, Kant says carpenters are immediately introduced to a high standard of quality and craftsmanship. “From the first interview with (founder) Ross Faulkner, our carpenters have instilled in them that quality is not negotiable and that a high standard of craftsmanship is expected,” says Kant. Ross, who started Faulkner Construction 40 years ago, says these standards are maintained by growing a team of foremen, many of whom joined the company as apprentices.
Faulkner’s passion for building is reflected by the team’s participation in the Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year Awards, which they participate in most years with team members placing first (2010), second (2017, 2020, 2021), and third (2012, 2020) in the Auckland competition. Will Moore – who received a gold award in the Carters New Home $1 Million – $1.5 Million category – says that he’s been encouraged by the Faulkner team to keep learning and developing himself as a builder throughout his seven-year journey from apprentice to gold medalwinning foreman. “From the get-go, we are taught to have pride and excellence in our work, in how we present ourselves and how we behave around clients and other sub-trades,” Moore says. This sets a precedent where everyone strives to build to the best of their abilities, he says. “Helping our apprentices to achieve the high standards is a team effort, whether it’s Ross checking in to discuss any challenges they’re having with their theory studies or the quiz nights they attend with our qualified carpenters to hone their skills.” As the eldest of three Faulkner sons involved in the business, Phil Faulkner was proud to receive a gold award in the Bunnings Renovation Over $1 Million category this year. He’s watched his father build this culture of pride and excellence over 40 years and a mantra that quality is non-negotiable. “We love working together as well,” Phil Faulkner says. “There’s a great work ethic across the group and we work hard to maintain a good team culture and working environment on site and socially. “But it’s also about the small things that we do every day – whether it’s giving positive feedback when something has been done well, helping a young builder to develop a better eye for detail, asking them to explain how they’re going to work through a task or sharing insights with workmates about new ways of doing things. “We’ve created a great building company by encouraging our people to become great builders.” Courtesy BCITO

BUSINESS/ENVIRONMENT
Ngai Tai posts $10million profit By NICK KRAUSE
L
ocal iwi Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki has recorded a consolidated profit of $10.09 million to March 31, 2021, up from $345,000 for the corresponding period the previous year, according to its latest annual report. The report reveals growing property and infrastructure development, marine and aquaculture consents, the commencement of a One Billion Trees (Te Uru Rākau) project and the impact of Covid-19 on the iwi and its operations. Ngāi Tai, whose main marae is Umupuia at Maraetai, shows consolidated net assets have experienced significant uplift to $29.75m to March 31, 2021 compared to $19.66m for the previous corresponding period. It attributes this to the one-off investment in Macleans College land and revaluation gains. The sale of Macleans College’s 12ha school site (land only) took place on March 30, 2021, in accordance with the Ngāi Tai ki Tamaki deed of settlement dated November 7, 2015, as reported in the Times in April. However there is a deficit forecast for 2022 of $187,000 attributable to ongoing investments in operations. The Macleans College land purchase, in partnership with Hāpai, is cited as a key highlight for its management team in the 2021 reporting period and in line with its strategy focussing on investment opportunities to provide growth and income. Hāpai is a property co-investment for various iwi and particularly Ngāti Raukawa, Hauraki iwi and various Taranaki-associated iwi. Ngāi Tai’s total land footprint either controlled or owned - is now 181.5ha, up from 168.5ha in 2020. Chairman James Brown says in the report its asset value reflects real progress in the commercial investment category of the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Trust. “Property continues to remain the Trust and CIT’s (Commercial Investment Trust) largest contributor excluding settlement sites and cash,” says Brown. “The Pukekohe Kiwibuild project is almost complete (forecast
for completion this year) and we now have Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whanau purchasing and moving into homes in Pukekohe. “The Hospital Road (Middlemore) development is now about to start civil works and is programmed to be complete by the end of 2022.” The Middlemore property development is one of the largest brownfield urban developments in Auckland, the reports says, and will result in civil works in partnership with Latham Construction and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The iwi and Latham Construction completed the $65m Kāinga Ora development of 120 units at Waterview in November 2020 and is working on a KiwiBuild project of 93 homes in Pukekohe and is poised to commence a half billion dollar development involving 350 homes and mixed-use facilities nestled between Middlemore
Hospital and Kings College. The Crown has invested $53m in Hospital Road, $29m in Pukekohe and $23m for Waterview. “Whenua (land) responsibilities include property and infrastructure development across Auckland with partners such as Latham Construction, Downer and Hawkins,” the report says. “The business has been the main revenue driver for the iwi over recent years.” The report also mentions further works in progress at Hendon Avenue (Mt Albert), Unitec Institute of Technology and South Auckland. As well as the Macleans College land purchase, the iwi also recently acquired the land beneath Glen Innes Police Station. Other works in progress include the Department of Corrections land and building in Manukau City and Te Naupata (Howick Golf Club). Meanwhile, its waiora (water)
business interests include marine and aquaculture plans. Ngāi Tai recently partnered with Paddy Bull, a leading Coromandel mussel farmer, to secure consent for 220ha of aquaculture space for a mussel farm east of Ponui (Chamberlins) Island in Tikapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf) and is considering applications for consent for further aquaculture space for a mussel farm and oyster farm. “Waiora will take 50 per cent of the space and have the water space to allow for 120 lines of mussel farming,” the report says. “As at the date of this report, the tribe has deployed four (of the first 10) mussel lines in the water. “Partnership with Pakihi Marine Farm - Clevedon Coast Oysters is progressing in respect of an oyster farm just south of Te Tauranga Waka o Tainui adjacent to Duder Regional Park.” Meanwhile Covid-19 and con-
sequent lockdowns and border closures have taken a toll on the tribe’s eco-tourism business Te Haerenga Trails, which it promotes as a journey through sacred islands Rangitoto (Peretū) and neighbouring Motutapu Islands. “Whilst Te Haerenga activities have been impacted with the severe drop in tourism as a result of Covid-19, it continues to deliver disproportionate opportunities with the One Billion Tree project commencing at Motutapu, a whale/dolphin watch concession being secured in partnership with Explore in Tikapa Moana and e-bike opportunities being investigated. “Te Haerenga has partnered with Clime Capital (which owns Man o’ War at Te Huruhe (Man o’ War Bay) with cows now helping manage grass at Motutapu.” The iwi is also collaborating with the Department of Conservation.
MUSIC
Kiwi musician Ant Utama releases his unconventional love song By ZOE GARDEN Kiwi-born and Germany-based pop artist Ant Utama has released his new track. Utama, who used to live in Cockle Bay, is proud to share his new track ‘Any Other Way’, an unconventional love song that is co-written and produced by Campbell Paget. An official video is due to release on Friday. “’Any Other Way’ was written for couples in long-term relationships,” Utama says. “You know what I mean...instead of going out to fancy dinners and bars, staying on the couch, wearing sweatpants and watching Netflix.” “Once the honeymoon period is over, we get comfortable, and some don’t like that but I love it! I’ve been with my girl for six years now. It’s an achievement and something to embrace when

you know your significant other so well you can be completely comfortable as yourself and, for me, that’s sweatpants on the couch.” Born and raised in Howick and working the 9-5 grind in the corporate sector, Utama, tired of his
situation, packed up and headed to Germany to follow his dreams. In January 2020, Utama released a song called ‘I Got Your Back’ which was inspired by the unfortunate suicide statistics in New Zealand. His debut EP Brave has
amassed more than 250k streams with Utama now on the path to completing his second body of work. “I was raised by very loving and conservative Asian parents who taught me how to be safe and secure in life,” Utama says. “They were pretty shocked and concerned when I told them I was off to Germany to pursue music. It’s been three years now and I’m slowly showing them that I know what I’m doing. I know they’re proud and they’re coming around.” Busking on the streets of Germany, he had many interactions with friendly passers-by, realising he wasn’t the only one going through a transformative journey. Utama says he’s found his purpose as an artist – to inspire and encourage people to follow their dreams and aspirations.

COUNCIL
Mayor blasts rubbish dumpers By CHRIS HARROWELL
A
uckland mayor Phil Goff is adding his voice to the growing criticism of people who feel entitled to illegally dump their rubbish in east Auckland. The Times has previously reported people appear to be taking advantage of Covid-19 lockdowns to de-clutter their homes or garages and the evidence of that is large piles of rubbish popping up across the community. Numerous piles of unwanted household items were discarded in recent months in front of Salvation Army Family Stores in Botany Road and Ti Rakau Drive. Large piles of rubbish are frequently dumped on east Auckland roadsides, including in Elevation Street, Flat Bush, and others. Howick Local Board chairperson Adele White previously said she finds such actions “disgusting” and the problem is getting worse in the local area. Auckland Council waste solutions general manager Parul Sood has said people caught illegally dumping rubbish, including leaving items outside a shop when it’s closed, face $400 instant fines and, if successfully prosecuted in court, up to $30,000. “If people are tempted to reorganise their garage right now, they’ll have to keep any unwanted

items on their property until the services that can’t take them open again,” Sood said. “If people give a charity shop things they cannot sell, they’re burdening them with the cost of getting rid of the rubbish. If items are potentially re-useable, they should be stored somewhere clean and dry. “When the shops start opening, then re-useable items can be taken during opening hours only
to see if they are accepted for sale.” Goff says, like most super-city residents, he has a zero tolerance for “irresponsible and selfish people who dump their rubbish on the roadside and impose the cost of clean-ups on other Aucklanders”. “The council increased its investment in tackling illegal dumping, boosting the number of surveillance cameras in hot spot areas and setting up the 0800 NODUMP hotline,” he told the
Times. “We continue to issue infringement notices and prosecute the small number of individuals and cowboy commercial outfits we’ve caught engaging in especially reckless and egregious dumping. “It’s about sending a clear message. If you dump illegally, you’ll get done.” Goff says while the vast majority of Aucklanders were staying home during alert level four, a
small number of people used the opportunity to dump their rubbish around the region. He points to examples such as asbestos-contaminated rubbish, which put residents and council staff at risk, and cost thousands of dollars to clean up. “I strongly encourage Aucklanders to report any suspected illegal dumping activity by phoning 0800 NODUMP (0800 663 867), the 24 hour illegal dumping hotline.”

Car crashes onto rocks at Maraetai
Emergency services were called to a car accident in Maraetai last Wednesday in which a car left the road and ended up on rocks. The driver escaped major injuries. Police say emergency
services were notified of the incident in Maraetai Coast Road at about 4.50pm on October 6. Residents say they heard sirens from fire appliances at about 5pm. The vehicle involved had gone off the road and
A local dance crew has taken third place in an international hip hop dance competition. Dance crew Rebellious (aged 16-18 years), choreographed by world-renowned choreographer Kiel Tutin and Isaiah Reid, came third in the Varsity Division at HHI’s World Hip Hop Dance Championship on Sunday. Howick’s Red Studio managing director Kiri Whitford-Joynt said HHI didn’t run the Worlds last year due to the pandemic and in 2021 it is run virtually online with video submissions. “With all countries in and out of lockdowns it was a great option,” she said. “We submitted our prelims video and then NZ went into lockdown. When we qualified for finals, everyone had the opportunity to re-submit videos but we couldn’t due to our lockdown and had to wait to see who else had in order to see final results.”
onto rocks. The driver was out of the car and had minor injuries, police say. A tow truck was called to retrieve the car. Firemen acted as go/ stop men for incoming and outgoing traffic.
There were 170 crews from around the world competing in the Worlds Preliminary round and 49 through to Finals. Rebellious qualified second through the NZ qualifying competition with HHINZ where the top three in each division go to the Worlds. After worlds prelims they qualified in eighth place with a deduction and the top 10 going through. After a review, the deduction was removed so their score left them in fourth moving into finals. “We were unable to submit another video for finals due to Covid lockdown so our score stayed the same moving from prelims to finals,” WhitfordJoynt said. “We had to wait and see if anyone else moved places after finals judging and at 5am on Sunday morning watched the finals with Varsity Division results revealing third place.”
Police say that the car went off the road and onto rocks.
DANCE
A dancer’s dream: medals, touring and teaching By ZOE GARDEN
A
young local dancer has continued to make her mark overseas. From learning at a Howick dance school to dancing on stage in front of tens of thousands, 20-year-old Maddison Barnett has built up an impressive résumé. “I started dancing when I was five,” says Barnett. “I played a lot of sports but liked that dance was slightly more challenging.” She was predominantly trained in jazz until she turned 10. Then she started learning hip-hop. “It felt right in my body,” she says. “I liked the music more in style.” At the age of 12, she auditioned to be a part of world-renowned choreographer Parris Goebel’s junior hip hop crew Bubblegum. “It definitely taught me a hard work ethic and working in a team, really learning at a young age to prioritise my career,” Barnett says. Barnett, who went to Saint Kentigern College, won several world titles and medals at the World Hip Hop Championships in the US. She claimed silver in 2013, silver in 2015 and bronze in 2016. Under Goebel, Barnett expanded upon her skill-set and had many
opportunities. One was being chosen to feature, along with a select group of other Kiwis, in videos for songs from Justin Bieber in 2015. Barnett performed in clips for ‘Sorry’, ‘Children’ and ‘What do you mean?’. “Filming was really fun,” Barnett said. “It was a good experience to learn what we have to do if we want to make it in dance.” In 2018, she left Palace Dance Studios and is working with NZ choreographer and fellow east Aucklander Kiel Tutin, who has choreographed for superstars JLo and Black Pink. She is a part of Tutin’s 3WY+BOY agency. Barnett has danced commercially for the Chinese artist Cai Xukun, or KUN. Hearing about the event through Tutin, who is the head choreographer of the tour, Barnett auditioned for Taiwanese singer and ‘Queen of C-Pop’ Jolin Tsai’s ‘Ugly Beauty World’ tour. At the end of 2020 and start of 2021, Barnett and the rest of the dancers travelled to Taiwan for six sold-out shows. “There was around 20,000-30,000 people in each show,” she says. “It was amazing.” Before the opening night, Barnett had a slew of difficulties:
her grandfather had died two days earlier, she was overseas during Covid-19, and she’d had to learn the dance quickly. Then she performed on stage. “Just seeing the crowd and everything, it’s probably one of the best moments of my life,” she says. The tour is currently on hold. Dance has taught her to keep herself cool under the pressure and adapt to change quickly, Barnett told the Times. For the future, Barnett has received opportunities go to US and teach dance. “I want to inspire people to take a risk and give dancing a go,” Barnett says. “Dancing in NZ is big but it isn’t as normalised as other sports. I want to create a position or show people that you can really dream big and go overseas and break that stigma.” Maddison Barnett, 20, is currently on tour with musical sensation Jolin Tsai. SAILING
The show will go on Get your bubble booked! PIC Coastal Classic race organisers confirm that the PIC Coastal Classic will take place on Friday October 22 – and you are going to need crew.
I
n 39 years of the PIC Coastal Classic, every race has imprinted its mark on sailing history. New boats, old boats, new technology, record breaking conditions – and boat-breaking conditions. The fleet has seen it all. Every edition of the race has been unique. In 2020, organisers and competitors were faced with lockdown restrictions that were eased just weeks before the event – 2021 has not been so fortunate. For the first time in the race’s history, conditions – this year due to a pandemic and not due to weather – have forced a significant change to the race. However, the NZ Multihull Yacht Club (NZMYC) and sponsor PIC Insurance Brokers are both determined that sailing will happen if it can and they have sketched out a plan of what that might look like: • A local race, within the Auckland boundary

• R un under Yachting NZ’s Safety Category 4 • A course in the Hauraki Gulf that will be announced closer to the time, taking 8-12 hours, finishing between 6pm and 10pm for most of the fleet • And, of course, designed to safely accommodate all Covid-19 restrictions in place at the time. For most boats this will mean sail-
ing single handed or only with members the same bubble onboard, unless the Government announces further changes. “If you want to sail in the PIC Coastal Classic at Labour Weekend, please get ready for it because if there is any chance we can go, we will,” says NZMYC Commodore Greer Houston. “We hoped for Level 2. But
the new Covid-19 alert Level 3 enables us to sail,” says Houston. “We are still working to understand what it means for aspects such as race starts and safety cover. But we will design an event that is safe in terms of Covid-19, and that is flexible and responsive to changes.” Daniel Garner of PIC Insurance Brokers, in its tenth year of sponsoring the Great Race North is feeling upbeat. “The next generation of sailors, on reading the history of the Great Race North, will be impressed that we raced even in the face of a pandemic,” says Garner. “Go out there, have fun. And we’ll look forward to delivering an epic 40th birthday party for the PIC Coastal Classic in 2022.” More information will be provided as details emerge. Stay up to date with the latest at www.coastalclassic. co.nz and on Facebook and Instagram.

Wayne Huang, the Rear Commodore (Power) at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, has been awarded a Yachting New Zealand Service Award. It is the first time an Asian-born winner has been awarded honour. The award will be presented at the 2021 Yachting Excellence Awards on Friday November 12 at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The awards evening will feature the presentation of awards as well as a gala dinner. The Yachting Excellence Awards recognise excellence in sailing, from Optimists through to offshore boats.
“This country has produced and continues to produce, some outstanding sailors who have achieved some amazing feats on the world stage.,” Yachting NZ said. “The annual Yachting Excellence Awards are an opportunity to recognise achievements at local and club level and there are many who do so much to make these places special.” “It is a great honour for me to have the chance to serve as Rear Commodore (Power) at BBYC to help wider community access, enjoy and success on water,” Huang said.
BOATING RULES REMINDER By ZOE GARDEN Coastguard New Zealand has issued a notification to the Auckland public on boating guidelines for alert level 3.1. The changes, under modified level 3 guidelines announced last week by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, are: • All boating activities should be limited to people from the same household. • All outdoor recreational activities must be completed in one day. • You cannot travel in the same vehicle as people from other households. • You can only travel to Waiheke Island or Great Barrier Island if you are a resident on either of the islands. It is not permitted to berth, anchor off the coast or land
on the two islands. “Remember the air, sea and road boundaries between Auckland the rest of New Zealand, including the Alert Level 3 area in Waikato, remains in place,” Coastguard NZ said. Coastguard Maraetai echoed these rules on social media. “Enjoy the water and stay safe,” Coastguard Maraetai said.

Fox tied 24th in Spain Beachlands-based professional golfer Ryan Fox finished tied for 24th in the Acciona Open de España – the Spanish Open – in Madrid at the weekend. He finished at 11 under, eight shots behind winner Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello who nabbed the title after his birdie putt on the first playoff hole. Fox started the tournament in style sitting four shots off the clubhouse leader Ross McGowan on day one. He was seventh-equal following his six-under 65-shot round where he hit seven birdies on the first, fourth, fifth, seventh, 14th, 17th and 18th holes and bogeyed the 11th.

SEVENS
RSM NZ partner of World Schools Sevens Rugby event World Schools Sevens Aotearoa has announced that RSM New Zealand has become a new principal partner for the next tournament over the weekend of January 22-23, 2022 at Pakuranga United Rugby Club. The premier U18 boys and girls’ sevens rugby festival began in 2016, growing to draw 32 teams from across the globe to Auckland by 2019 and quickly became the pinnacle event for sevens youth in world rugby. After a Covid-19 impacted 2020 event, 2021 will only feature teams from New Zealand despite a lot of interest from offshore, particularly Australia. However, the NZ Rugby-endorsed tournament remains the ultimate drawcard for aspiring sevens talent from across the country. RSM is part of a global network in the accounting and auditing sector, with a growing footprint in Auckland, with a focus primarily on small-to-medium sized businesses. Their support of the World Schools Sevens Aotearoa will enable the event to build an important platform for 2021, with exciting growth plans ahead as sevens continues to grow off the back of Commonwealth and Olympic Games visibility. “At RSM we’re passionate about seeing young people achieve their dreams and we want to support their growth and development,” says partner Carl Cachopa, an accomplished sportsperson in his own right having represented NZA, Central Districts and Auckland in cricket. “World Schools Sevens is an ideal event for us to increase the awareness of RSM, but also it aligns with our values as a company, to build confidence for the future. We do that through our business insights, knowledge and expertise with our clients, and World Schools Sevens does it for aspiring sevens players,” says Cachopa. Tournament director Phil Gaze is thrilled to welcome RSM to the event. “We are excited to announce that RSM New Zealand have become a principal partner of the 2022 World School Sevens. The partnership will assist in the growth and development of the event and help take it to another level. “It will also see RSM assist outside the tournament with a few of the elite athletes receiving financial and budgetary advice,” says Gaze. ➤ World Schools Sevens is broadcast live over both days on Sky TV.

Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office or on the website. The Board has determined that there will be places available for out of zone students commencing school in Term 1, 2022. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. For students seeking enrolment in Term 1, 2022, the deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone places is 4.00pm on Monday 15 November. Parents of students who live within the home zone and intend enrolling their child during Term 1 should notify the school by Friday 22 October 2021 to assist the school to plan appropriately for the next term. Applications should be made by submitting a completed enrolment form online. Enrolment forms can be accessed from the Macleans Primary Website (www.macleansprimary.school. nz) and Macleans Primary Facebook page. These can also be collected from the school office from Monday 18 October. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If this is required, it will be held on Monday 22 November 2021 under supervision. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held. Length of enrolment period - Term 1: 15 October-15 November Deadline for receipt of applications: 15 November 2021 Date of ballot: 22 November 2021 The Board for Macleans Primary School

ine wins in 10 tests this year is an All Blacks record not to be sneezed at in a squad blessed with incredible depth but not the forward physicality and set piece power to dominate the juggernauts. That was the case in the losing 2019 World Cup semi-final to England and again in the latest last gasp 31-29 loss to South Africa after previously beating the same arch enemy 19-17. The man most missed against the Boks was lineout maestro Sam Whitelock despite Scott Barrett’s tireless efforts in other phases as Brodie Retallick’s locking partner. With the Springboks dominating lineouts and breakdowns, the All Blacks struggled for 30 per cent possession and territory and were subject to another bombing barrage from the accurate boot of Faf de Klerk. But whereas the boot was overdone in a boring first encounter, this time they allowed backs like Damian de Allande to show their class and their last second win was richly deserved. While the All Blacks have succeeded in developing some classy players beyond the front row, only Retallick has the physical

power to match that of No 8 Duane Vermeulen, lock Eben Etzabeth and giant hooker Malcolm Marx. That Marx is confined to the reserves bench remains a mystery although he greatly improves his team’s finishing clout. While Ardie Savea, Akira Ioane, Luke Jacobson, Dalton Papalii, Hoskins Sotutu and Ethan Blackadder are versatile loose for-
wards with much to recommend them, none have the retired Kieran Read’s uncanny ability to steal ball from his own team’s kick-offs. With Buck Shelford warning that another head injury could end gutsy Sam Cane’s career, it would be wiser to make Savea the first choice No 7 and continue to let the others fight for the No 6 and No 8 berths.
Halfback Aaron Smith and Whitelock’s return for the northern tour is welcome against opponents like Wales, Ireland, England and France who will test the tourists with the aerial bombardment and rush defence so favoured by the Springboks. The big movers this year to cement berths have been the Ioane brothers, David Havili and
Jordie Barrett, Akira and Rieko making their mark in the early games without having the same impact against the tough Boks. However, it was against them and de Klerk’s torturous bombing raids that Barrett’s physique and courage contributed so much. He also added full throttle thrust to a backline attack that sorely needed his impact against a suffocating Boks rush defence. Brave Damian McKenzie also played as well as his big heart and nippy feet would allow but his small physique was exposed against the juggernaut’s power. Still he remained a huge talent who can back up classy Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett at first-five while Havili, Anton Lienert-Brown, Rieko Ioane, Will Jordan, Sevu Reece and George Bridge continue their battle for the other backline berths.
