sports medicine registrar has returned from his three-week journey to Europe which saw him deliver three tonnes of medical equipment and medications to health services dealing with the displaced and injured in central and southern Ukraine. Born in Ukraine, Dr Andriy Boyko, who attended Macleans College and Howick College, was passionate about using his contacts and connections in Ukraine to organise a medical supply chain through Europe to bring medicine to those in need.

In his fundraising efforts, he has so far raised A$120,156 on GoFundMe. With the aid of the Australian Federation of Ukranian Organisations (AUFO), who organised freight forwarding into Ukraine, Boyko’s first shipment of $20,000 acute traumatic first aid supplies left Australia in early April. The second shipment of general medicine/humanitarian aid departed a month later on May 16 with Boyko on board. He arrived in Germany to pick up the medication and medical equipment, took several trips to and from Germany and Poland because of the
sheer volume of the load, and delivered it to Lviv, a city in Western Ukraine, where it was distributed to Odessa, Kyiv and Dnipro. From there it went further east to war-affected regions. Through this process, he worked closely with NGOs Ukranian Guardian Angels and the Volunteers of Dnipro or TAPS Ukraine. A lot of refugee camps have now closed down because displaced Ukranians have been placed in foster families and various accommodations, Boyko says. The Polish town of Wroclaw has a population of one million and 200,000 refugees. ➤ Turn to page 4

ia ora! How lovely to see the beautiful display of sunflowers bobbing away in Fencible Walk, Howick. A lady passing by commented on how she saw them as a garden full of happy faces! Perfect as we encounter the winter months. Whilst the Howick Local Board continues to carry out business meetings and workshops online, it has been good to get out and about again to meet with local groups and attend their events.
This month we will officially “open” new play spaces at Earnslaw Park and Cockle Bay Beach. We are sure that local youngsters will enjoy these lovely new places to play. Plan a school holiday visit!

Scooters and skateboarders from far and wide came to try out this new addition to the Lloyd Elsmore skate park, opened recently. It was fantastic to see our young people enjoying this facility amid a happy atmosphere complete with live band and a sausage sizzle onsite to celebrate.

Ridge Road, Bleakhouse Road, Pakuranga Road, and Aviemore Drive. Almost $170,000 was raised through a Givealittle page online for Hu’s family following his death. It was set up by one of the first people on the scene after the crash. “Alan leaves behind his devoted wife and two daughters aged 8 and 11,” the page said. “They went from a perfectly happy, healthy family to utter devastation in the blink of an eye. “Their lives have been torn apart and it’s hard to imagine how long and arduous the journey to recovery will be. “On top of the sorrow of losing her husband and their dad, they are now in financial hardship from the loss of his income.” After Hu’s death, his wife Hua Yang thanked everyone
who donated to the fundraising page. “Our blissful family of four was completely unprepared for such a tragedy,” she said. “Alan was our rock. It has literally felt like our sky has fallen. “The public’s generous support has been incredible. “In addition to the funds, which will be a tremendous help to us as we try to navigate our lives from now on, the kind messages have been a ray of light in our darkest hours.” Police investigated the crash that claimed Hu’s life and charged Speir, of Pakuranga, with manslaughter. He first appeared in the Manukau District Court on February 5, 2019, with his case subsequently being transferred to the Auckland High Court. The Crown’s case at trial was presented by prosecutor Luke Radich while defence counsel Andrew Speed represented Speir. Following a jury trial in front of Justice Ian Gault, Speir was found guilty of Hu’s manslaughter on June 7. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in August.
Notable Accounting Best Practices
A
ccounting is a challenging part of business and hiring a great accountant is only half the battle. There are practices that you must follow to make sure that your business is doing the best it can. Here are chartered accounting firm Drumm Nevatt & Associates Limited’s five best accounting practices for businesses. 1. Have a plan and know your goals – Knowing what you’re working towards is a key part of accounting. When your goals are defined you are able to fit your finances and your financial plan around that. 2. Maintain accurate records – This is vital as keeping accurate records has ramifications for many different parts of your business. Not only do they go to the IRD, but can help influence your decision making.
3. Keep tax in mind all year round – Do not only think of tax when tax season is approaching. Tax season is all ready a stressful time and neglecting tax the other 11 months of the year will only make it worse. 4. Separate business and personal finances – This is especially important when you are a small business or sole owner. Have a separate business bank account and IRD information as this makes it easier to track your business expenses and keep accurate records 5. Hire the best professional help possible – Accounting is complicated and trying to handle your accounting by yourself can get too difficult. When you hire the right accountant they are able to guide you through the complex world of tax, budgets and such plans.

man has been found guilty of manslaughter for his role in a fatal vehicle crash in east Auckland in 2019. Adam Speir was driving his Holden Commodore vehicle over the speed limit on Botany Road heading toward the intersection with Ti Rakau Drive when it collided with another vehicle waiting at a red light at about 5pm on January 28. An occupant of the vehicle that Speir’s Holden struck, Zhengwen “Alan” Hu, 50, died from injuries sustained in the crash. The collision involved four vehicles, three of which were stationary at the intersection waiting to turn right. The fourth car collided with the third, in turn shunting all three vehicles forward. Another driver involved in the incident was hospitalised as police appealed for witnesses to come forward. Officers asked for people who saw, or had dash camera footage of, an older model Holden Commodore vehicle being driven prior to the crash. Police said they believed the vehicle may have been in the nearby east Auckland areas around Botany Road,

Ram-raids continue as fuel station targeted
SPECIAL MATARIKI EDITION
By CHRIS HARROWELL Police are investigating after a vehicle was used in a ram-raid burglary of an east Auckland fuel station. A police spokesperson says the vehicle was used to force entry to the BP Connect on Chapel Road in Northpark just after midnight on June 14. “Offenders have begun stealing cigarettes from the store before the fog canon has activated and forced them to flee the area. “Our enquiries are ongoing into the burglary.” A BP spokesperson told the Times the company is assisting police with their investigation. “None of our team were at the site at the time. “At BP, the safety of our customers and team members is our first priority. “We work closely with the police and have CCTV technology at all our BP Connect sites. “The site will reopen later this morning [June 14].” Video footage of the

scene following the ramraid shows police officers looking at a white Toyota hatchback vehicle in front of the fuel station’s store. There’s a large amount of glass on the ground and part of the entry doors have broken off. The fuel station was closed to customers when the Times visited the scene at about 10am on June 14. Yellow tape had been placed across the entrance and timber had been used to board over damage caused to the store. Work to repair the exten-
sive damage began shortly afterward. The incident comes amid a spate of such crimes across the city and locally including several ram-raids carried out at Ormiston Town Centre in Flat Bush and at liquor and jewellery stores in Howick. ➤ People with information on the incident can phone police on 105 quoting file number 220614/6615 or phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111

uyers of homes in a new development in Flat Bush have been told by receivers their deposits are safe and that their contracts with the property development companies DDL Homes Ormiston and DDL Homes Ormiston 2020 are not affected. Receivers have been appointed to the companies leading the development of the Maison Dórmiston, Ormiston Stage 2, Mission Heights and Ormiston Heights developments located at 370 and 397 Ormiston Rd, Flat Bush. The receivers are Neale Jackson and Brendon Gibson of Calibre Partners. The receivers were appointed on June 3 after the developments’ financer became concerned about construction progress. Decisions about what happens next will be made by the receivers. “Buyers have been assured that the receivership does not affect their contracts and their deposits are held in a trust account that is also unaffected by the receivership,” Jackson confirmed in a media release. “The receivers intend to provide buyers with further information as soon as they can and regular updates throughout the receivership.” The DDL Homes website said it was founded in 2012. “DDL Homes has completed multiple projects, and many are also in the pipeline – priced affordably to give Kiwi’s the chance to own their very own home in Auckland,” the website said. “With a highly experienced team and an eagerness for building and materials inno-
vation, DDL Homes has earned the trust of Kiwis in delivering lifelong, quality homes, making the dream of homeownership a reality for many.” The website said the 370 Ormiston Road development is located “barely an intersection away” from Ormiston Town Centre. “With some 4-bedroom homes available, this is your last chance to get into 3SEVEN0 Mission Heights! It said homes were available in 3 and 4-bedroom terraces.” Meanwhile, the website said Ormiston Stage 2 at 397 Ormiston Road had sold out. “Stage 2 consists of walk-up apartments. There is a range of 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom options in this release. Stage 2 of this project has fully sold out!” the website said. In a timeline, it said in early 2020 Covid hit, the company grew to 50+ staff and had 6+ major projects underway. “Late in 2020 DDL Homes Kitchen Studio was launched. The company introduced an in-house plumbing and drainlayers team,” it said. “In early 2021 it had finished its Nelson Street and Butterworth Avenue projects. DDL Homes had more than 80 staff by this point after launching an in-house window company.” The New Zealand Companies Office lists the sole director and shareholder of DDL Homes Ormiston Limited and DDL Homes Ormiston 2020 Limited – both now in receivership and voluntary administration – as Baljit Kaur Dheil of Flat Bush. The Times has contacted the companies for comment. Are you one of the buyers in these developments? If you wish to offer your thoughts email editor@times.co.nz.
Former long-serving Member of Parliament for Pakuranga Maurice Williamson has announced he will stand for a seat on the Auckland Council at the local government elections later this year. “I intend to stand for one of the two seats representing the Howick ward, an area that includes the entire Pakuranga Electorate that I represented for 30 years,” says Williamson. “It was never my intention to stand for local government following my time in Parliament but public pressure has made me rethink that position. I am approached on an almost daily basis by ratepayers who are seriously concerned about the performance of the Auckland Council. “Rates just keep on going up, as does debt, yet we seem to be getting less from the council by way of core services.” Williamson says the Super City, which was formed by amalgamating seven city and district councils into one in 2010, has never delivered for the ratepayer. “We were told at the time that the amalgamation would see huge efficiency gains, a rationalisation of operational units, and significant cost savings. We were promised the new regime would see a reduction in costs and total staff employed,” Williamson says. “But in reality, the very opposite has happened. Rates have risen by over 150 per cent in real terms (that’s after correcting for inflation). Liabilities have more than tripled and debt servicing is now

costing over a million dollars a day. And that’s while interest rates have been at alltime lows. “And far from rationalising the number of staff, Auckland Council has experienced a massive increase in overall staff numbers, with at least one in every four of those employees paid over $100,000 a year. “There has to be a day of reckoning. No organisation can just keep spending money that it hasn’t got and racking up debt. “If the ratepayers of the Howick Ward are prepared to give me their vote, I will be fixated on reducing costs, staff, debt, liabilities and most importantly, rates.”

‘IN LVIV, THE SIGHT IS QUITE DECEIVING’ ➤ From page 1 “When you walk down the street, you hear as much Ukranian as you do Polish,” Boyko says. “Poland went out of their way to help these people and give them homes and jobs and take them in.” In Lviv, the sight is quite deceiving, Boyko says. Outside of the occasional air-raid siren, its business as usual – coffee shops are open, streets busy, but when spoken too, the city’s inhabit-
ants will show pictures of destroyed homes and stories of family members fighting on the front and friends killed. “It’s quite amazing how resilient Ukranians are,” Boyko says. “They’re looking for help, but not necessarily for pity. There’s a sense of pride and resolve.” Boyko says that fighting has increased dramatically on the south eastern fronts “where there is a shortage of equipment for those
volunteering to defend Ukraine”. “They are short on food, clothes and boots but yet are resisting the whole Russian army.” Boyko returned to his home in Australia over a week ago. His father, Valeriy Boyko, will be travelling with another shipment to Ukraine soon. “As long as people continue to support me, I’ll continue to do what I can through my contacts in Ukraine,” Boyko says.

uckland Council has moved one step closer to being able to sell several local public reserves but opponents say they aren’t giving up the fight. Among the properties the council eyed for sale are reserves at 9R Fortyfoot Lane, Sunnyhills; 111R Golfland Drive, Botany, and 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, Pakuranga; a section at 72R Karaka Road, Beachlands; and part of the site of a gas station at 2R Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga. A statutory process, being managed by Eke Panuku Development Auckland, must be followed before sites classified as reserves under the Reserves Act 1977 can be sold. The council publicly notified its intent to revoke the reserve status of 20 properties across the city in February last year. More than 1300 submissions were received, of which 1145 related to the east Auckland properties. None were in favour of their reserve status being revoked. Two independent commissioners appointed to consider public submissions heard from people who wished to share their views in person and completed site visits to the five local properties. On June 9 their report recommending whether or not reserve

status should be revoked was presented at a meeting of the council’s parks, arts, community and events committee. The meeting’s agenda says approval was sought to submit a request to the Minister of Conservation to uplift the reserve status of the properties at 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 72R Karaka Road, and 2R Ti Rakau Drive. It says the commissioners recommend the committee not proceed with the reserve revocation of 111R Golfland Drive. “They [the commissioners] support the proposed reserve revo-
cation for 72R Karaka Road and conditionally support the proposed reserve recommendation of 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, [and] 2R Ti Rakau Drive. “The commissioners’ support is subject to council investigations into a community trust model to manage 9R Fortyfoot Lane. “Council’s service and asset planning team has considered options for this but does not support any of them. “The commissioners also recommended the provision of an improved road crossing from Aberfeldy Avenue to Lloyd Elsmore
Park, prior to proceeding with the proposed reserve revocation. “Staff are working with Auckland Transport to investigate improving pedestrian links and will report to the committee on 76R Aberfeldy Avenue at a later date.” Howick ward councillor Paul Young said during the committee meeting while he approves of the council’s general approach to asset recycling he couldn’t support revoking the reserve status of 9R Fortyfoot Lane. He said he was glad to see the commissioners reject reserve status revocation of 111R Golfland Drive and encouraged his fellow councillors to “save Fortyfoot Lane as well”. The committee voted unanimously to approve submission of a request to the Minister of Conservation to uplift the reserve status of the properties at 72R Karaka Road and 2R Ti Rakau Drive. A separate vote was held on the property at 9R Fortyfoot Lane. It received 11 votes in favour and nine votes, including by Young and his fellow Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart, against. Following the meeting Stewart told the Times she was “really happy” with the decision on 111R Golfland Drive, but the vote on the reserve in Fortyfoot Lane was “very disappointing”. She says she’ll put up a notice of
motion to try to get it back to the council’s finance and performance committee to have it revoked. “It’s a sad day for the Howick ward ... once the land is sold, it’s sold and built on. “At a time when we’re having so much intensification, we need this green space.” Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown says he’s “incredibly disappointed” with the committee’s vote on 9R Fortyfoot Lane. “With increasing intensification in east Auckland, it’s critical we protect and retain our green space. “Auckland Council is [potentially] selling this land arguing the money is needed to backfill its budget. “Before selling reserves they should be focusing on their own bloated bureaucracy.” Brown says he’ll write to Conservation Minister Poto Williams expressing the community’s opposition and “requesting she does not revoke the Reserves Act status on this land”. An Eke Panuku spokesperson previously said if the committee decided to forward a request to the Department of Conservation (DoC) to uplift the reserve status of some or all of the properties, as it has now done, all written submissions and the commissioners’ reports and hearing submissions will be included for consideration. The final decision lies with the Minister of Conservation.

E
ast Auckland students went to town with clippers on their friends’ hair last week to raise money for cancer. Eight Kiwis are diagnosed each day with a blood cancer and there’s a strong chance they may lose hair through chemotherapy. On Friday, 14 Pakuranga College students and two teachers committed to removing their lush locks from their scalps in solidarity for those living with blood cancer and to fundraise for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand
(LBCNZ). Student barber Joshua Jackson did the cutting. The occasion was orgnised by the Student Service Council - three of whom had their heads shaved. Shave for a Cure 2022 is a nationwide initiative that many school students, families and individuals take part in. Students paid $5 to take part in shaving a head of a person of their choice, $2 to attend the show and $4 to wax off leg hair from willing participants. The students raised $771 during the lunchtime event. Year 10 student Teagan
Phipps raised $963 in donations for her head shaving. Friends Sasha Read and Felicity Dowden raised $590 and $505 respectively. “We wanted to donate to a good cause,” Felicity says. “More people should do it.” Felicity, Teagan, Sasha and others who shaved their heads were a part of Pakuranga College’s Shave for a Cure fundraising page, which has so far raised $5329. Teagan told the Times that, while she is nervous about chopping off her hair, she has a beanie in preparation.

ART
New exhibitions show at Te Tuhi
Two new exhibitions will be up and running at Te Tuhi’s main galleries this month. From June 12, Elsewhere and nowhere else and The house is full will be open to the public until September 4. Elsewhere and nowhere else, curated by Vera Mey, features artwork by Kah Bee Chow, Li-Ming Hu and Yuk King Tan, three artists who are inherently connected to Aotearoa but live elsewhere. With practices spread across Sweden, New York City and Hong Kong, the three artists seek to “trouble the notions that separate the local from the international, reminding us how multifarious our connections to the world are,” Te Tuhi says. The house is full, curated by Dillohana Lekamge, is a group
exhibition showcasing artwork by four artists “who stood on fringes of anti-establishment art movements in New Zealand from the 1970s onwards”. The exhibition features work by established artists Emily Karaka and John Miller and up-and-comers Parbhu Makan (photographer) and Teuane Tibbo (painter). Concrete probabilities, a sculptural work by Deanna Downling, will also be sitting in Te Tuhi’s foyer. The sculpture explores the relationship between concrete and sea level rise. Outside of Te Tuhi on the billboards, text-based work Neither Solid nor Liquid, by Hana Pera Aoake and Priscilla Rose Howe, considers the relationship between our bodies and the natural world.
T
here’s been an influx of gang members into east Auckland in recent years and dealing with their offending is impacting police resources. That’s among the information the area’s top cop shared at a public meeting on law and order issues organised by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown on June 13. About 100 people turned out to Howick Bowling Club to hear from Brown as well as Counties Manukau East area commander, inspector Scott Gemmell, senior sergeant Anson Lin and Howick police sergeant Brett Meale. Brown opened the meeting by talking about the recent spike in crime locally, including suspected gang shootings and ram-raid burglaries of retail stores. “I know by just speaking to a number of you on the way in you’re being impacted even in your own neighbourhoods by anti-social behaviour, crime, the increased presence of gangs in our community and the tensions that we’re seeing,” he said. “This is not an issue which is simply something that is out there in the media. More and more often it’s unfortunately coming closer to home.” Gemmell told the audience about his family background and police

experience before giving an overview about the main issues relating to crime in the area. He talked about the young ages of some youths involved in the recent ram-raid burglaries and how police are working with the families involved to stop such offending. “It’s a tough job and we’re dealing with some very complex family issues.” An audience member asked whether police have seen an increase in gang members living in the area and what impact that’s had on police resources. Gemmell said there have always been a number of gangs in the Counties Manukau East area. “We are seeing an influx of gangs that we traditionally didn’t have

probably five to six years ago. “That was an influx of gangs like the Comancheros, Mongols, Head Hunters and Rebels. “So yes, we have seen an influx of gang members coming into our area. “That’s independent of the growth within the Killer Beez and the Tribesmen already.” Gemmell said the increase in gang members in the area is impacting police resources. “If they’re involved in any unlawful behaviour, which many of them are, and it involves drug dealing or firearms offences, that’s necessarily taking Brett’s team, [and] all of Anson’s three prevention teams.” A resident asked if police were aware of all the properties in the area from which illegal drugs are sold. Meale said police receive a lot of information about “drug addresses” from members of the public. “It’s not as simple as someone ringing up and saying ‘there’s drug dealing going on at that house’ and we go around there. “There’s a lot of background work gathering more evidence to corroborate what’s going on.” On the question of whether some sentences handed down in New Zealand are too lenient, Brown said he’s concerned by the Labour Government’s policy of reducing the prison population by 30 per cent.

BIG PLANTING EVENT THIS SATURDAY We had a very successful planting bee for the McLeay Reserve in Mellons Bay on Saturday June 4. Our big planting event is scheduled for this Saturday June 18 for the MacDonald Walkway (Mellons Bay beach). Everyone is welcome so bring your friends, family, neighbours to plant a tree and assist with digging-in grasses to complement the plantings from the last two years. The MacDonald and McLeay walkways follow a stream for 1.5km from Mellons Bay up to Cheriton Road and Haseler Crescent and Montressor Place. It is a beautiful and popular walk, the first half on a fairly flat well-formed concrete and timber path. Saturday 18 June, 9am. Meet at the walkway entrance at the rear of the Mellons Bay beach carpark. Bring a spade, gloves and strong footwear. Postponement date July 2, 9am. For more information and updates, visit the “Walksouteast” Facebook page, www.facebook. com/WalksOutEast, or contact David Mallowes 0275 277 667 or MellonsBay@xtra.co.nz.

CLIMATE DISRUPTION COMING YOUR WAY – FAST Re: We can do it, Rees Sutcliffe (Times, June 8). Rees Sutcliffe exhorts us to let the rest of the world go mad, believing sustainable carbon-neutral development is claptrap. Sadly New Zealand is part of the madness. Earth simply cannot sustain the 8 billion humans on it now at the present rate of consumption and we are galloping headlong into climate disruption far worse than the droughts, heat waves, fires, hurricanes and floods we have witnessed already. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which governments and scientific institutions around the world accept as the authority, warns we have 10 years to change our ways. After that, we may be powerless to regain the climate that has nurtured our civilisation. I don’t suppose anyone likes change, but it’s coming – ready or not. Earth is a complex planetary system not a private school playground – it will respond to forces as it always has, whether we are here or not.

PYJAMAS FOR KIDS NEEDED TOO
I read your interesting lead article on the Blanket Bonanza [Times, June 8, Blankets 4 Kids 4 Winter appeal]. Do you also plan to run an article on the fact that Middlemore Hospital (Foundation?) is asking for warm new pyjamas to send home with needy child patients? I know Crawford Medical Centre in Howick is a collection centre and no doubt there are others. Some people might not have been able to afford to donate a blanket but would like to donate pyjamas.

ARE LOCAL BEACHES PRODUCING MICROPLASTICS? Retaining walls on the beach at Eastern and Bucklands Beaches are eroding, exposing the very cause of microplastics. There are plastic mesh bags [filled with concrete], breaking down, some sort of polyester blankets, with long fibres detaching. The UV rays and wave action are clearly causing disintegration for particles to be washed out to sea. It’s been common knowledge for years now, how these plastics affect marine life. More evidence was recently found at Antarctica. I noticed an area, 37m long, at the north end of Eastern Beach, and 20m long at the north end of Bucklands Beach where these pollutants have been utilised. How much more is under the banks waiting to be released? I sent notification, with photos, to Auckland Council on June 10. Will they think this is important? I wonder how long it will take for action.

COME ON AT
In the issue of The Times (June 1) I commented on the proposal for a raised crossing on Pakuranga Road. Further to that, I am well aware that Auckland Transport (AT) would like all of us to ditch our
cars and travel everywhere on public transport. Unfortunately, this organisation does not have the skills (and probably government funding) required to offer the public a reliable and consistent alternative to our own vehicles, as our experience on the weekend demonstrated. We turned up for the advertised sailing of the Half Moon Bay to city ferry, along with others who had obviously viewed the same website as ourselves, only to find that the ferry was not scheduled to depart for another 45 minutes. Upon ringing the AT helpline, we were all told that we shouldn’t have looked at that website because it is not updated and we should have used the journey-planner instead. I got no response when I asked why the website that we all had used was even up there at all. And they expect us to rely on the ‘service’ they are offering?

More mental health support for children
B
udget 2022 will continue to deliver on Labour’s commitment to better mental wellbeing services and support, with 195,000 primary and intermediate aged children set to benefit from the continuation and expansion of Mana Ake services, Health Minister Andrew Little said. “In Budget 2022 Labour will deliver on its manifesto commitment to expand Mana Ake, with $90-million set aside to start services in Northland, Counties Manukau, Bay of Plenty, Lakes and West Coast regions, as well as continue existing services in Canterbury and Kaikōura,” Little said. “Mana Ake is a school-based programme that gives children
the skills and support to deal with issues that include grief, loss, parental separation, and bullying. It also provides advice, guidance and workshops for parents, whānau and teachers. “We know that early intervention is one of the best ways we encourage better mental wellbeing for young New Zealanders and through their lives. Mana Ake empowers children with resilience and support, when and where they need it, to confidently cope with whatever life throws at them. “Supporting resilience in our kids today is part of growing the confident adults of tomorrow. “Expanding Mana Ake is one way we will help strengthen New Zealand’s economic secu-

rity for generations to come,” Andrew Little said. “Following the Christchurch and Kaikōura earthquakes, the feedback from parents and the education sector was that this programme made a real difference in the lives of many young people,” Associate Education Minister Jan Tinetti said. “One of the real strengths of Mana Ake is it’s codesigned by the local com-
munity it’s tailored to. That means important considerations such as cultural competencies are observed, and children get support in a way that is meaningful to them.” Youth mental health is part of the Cooperation Agreement between Labour and the Greens. “Everybody should have access to mental health support when they need it. The expansion of Mana Ake is an important and necessary
step to ensuring fewer young people not only no longer fall through the gaps, but develop understanding of their own and other’s mental health,” Green Party mental health spokesperson Chlöe Swarbrick said. “Local co-design for each of the new Mana Ake areas is well underway, and we expect to see the first areas commence service delivery later this year,” Andrew Little said.

needs, rather than a one size fits all check box mentality. “We’ll ensure opportunities for young people and particularly for those who have been underserved in the past. We must tackle inequity in our system – because every child can be good at maths and English if they believe in themselves, and their parents and teachers believe in them too,” Jan Tinetti said. “The Literacy, Communication and Maths Strategy and Hei Raukura Mō Te Mokopuna will help ensure we reach our goals of making Aotearoa the best place in the world to be a child,” Education Minister Chris Hipkins said. “There are barriers to learning that some kids face and some communities face disproportionately to others. This Government’s plan will address the drivers of the decline we have seen in the past and give kids the best start in life. “We want parents and caregivers to feel confident supporting their children’s learning progress, including through reading for pleasure and using maths in everyday life. “And for teachers, confidence comes with knowledge, so there will be a stronger focus on these subjects in Initial Teacher Education. There will also be professional supports considered for teachers to help make maths and literacy easier and more enjoyable for more children and young people.” “I’m proud of this Government for getting stuck in and tackling the issues that matter – the success of future generations of young people,” Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis said. “We know the statistics for Maori in particular aren’t right, that there are rangatahi being left behind, and we need to do something about it. This Government acknowledges that and is stepping up, putting our mokopuna at the centre and supporting them to experience success.”

Golden Gloves champs
Peebles off to Junior Pan Pacific Games
Three boxers from Revill’s Boxing Gym in Pakuranga have come away with three golds from the prestigious Golden Gloves in Taupo over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Haransh Singh [63.5kg Youth Male, currently ranked #2 in New Zealand for his age and weight] is an up-and-coming amateur boxer and is proving to be a force to reckon with since starting to box in 2020. Singh won both his bouts, defeating the New Zealand Champ in the final to claim his first Golden Gloves title. Wendell Stanley, currently the 71kg New Zealand Champion and on the short list for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in July, won both his bouts knocking out his opponent in the first bout and winning the second bout with a point shut-out decision, claiming his sixth North

Island Golden Gloves title. Kheva Potatau [63.5kg Elite Male, currently ranked #2 in New Zealand for his age and weight], who narrowly missed out on a National title in April, had the fight of the day with an outstanding bout that secured his third North Island Golden Gloves title. The Revills team was led by head coach Lance Revill, accompanied by assistant coach Jonathan Nevin. “The team were not alone for this tournament with
a large support crew from the gym coming to cheer the team on,” said Nevin. “With parents, gym members and supporters it was great to see so many come to cheer on the Revill’s Boxing Gym.” Revill couldn’t be more proud of the talent on display from his boxers. “They were outstanding…couldn’t have asked for anything more, these lads train hard and the results are showing in buckets loads,” said Revill.

ew Zealand has named a 23-swimmer strong team for the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Games to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, from August 24 – 27. Included in the squad is Liv Peebles, a Year 12 student at Saint Kentigern College who swims for TBSS Central City based in Mt Eden. The team consists of 16 girls and 7 boys, headlined by Aquablack Laura Littlejohn (St Pauls) returning to the pool after she will have recently competed at the 2022 FINA World Swimming Championships, said Swimming NZ’s National Development Leader and Team Leader, Alastair Johnson. “With this being the first opportunity for our next generation of age group swimmers to race internationally since the 2019 Australian State Teams, it’s a great opportunity for these swim-

mers to come up against other young swimmers from around the Pacific,” Johnson said. “A huge well done to these athletes and to their coaches for navigating such a challenging 12 months to achieve the selection criteria. “For most of these athletes, JPP will be their first international event and whilst their overseas experience will be limited, their enthu-
siasm to do themselves and New Zealand proud will be very high. “I am looking forward to seeing the team achieve their best in Hawaii and to make meaningful strides towards 2024 and beyond.” The team will be involved in the Tri-Series and a micro camp from July 9 – 11 in Christchurch as the swimmers tune up for their trip to Hawaii.
TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Elite ready for assault on France By ANDY MCGECHAN
D
-Day is fast approaching for New Zealand’s expeditionary forces and their much-anticipated landing on the shores of France. Preparations for New Zealand’s first assault on the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in 16 years is progressing at great pace and confidence is high that the Kiwi riders will acquit themselves with distinction at the 2022 edition in southern France in just over two-and-ahalf months’ time. Not since 2006 has New Zealand entered a team at the ISDE, but this year it has an extremely strong contingent and must fancy its chances of strong results at this high-profile off-road motorcycling event - to be staged near the town of Le Puy en Velay, in southern France, from August 29 and September 3. The ISDE will again attract the dirt bike racing elite from all corners of the planet, with the Kiwi contingent thrilled to be a part of that and Team New Zealand
Howick’s Liam Draper, a former Botany Downs Secondary College student, currently racing the Grand National Cross-country Championships in the United States, will travel to France to join Team New Zealand. Photos Andy McGechan, BikesportNZ.com
manager Justin Stevenson, from Porirua, said he was having weekly meetings with the team members to sort out logistics, travel and accommodation to make this
happen. Stevenson is being assisted in his task by MNZ board member and experienced former motocross team manager Mike McLeod,
also from the Wellington region. “Queen’s Birthday Monday’s event near Porirua (round two of the New Zealand Enduro Championships) represented terrain very similar to what we might expect in France,” said Stevenson. A strong contingent of supporters will also be travelling to assist the team during the event in France. The senior New Zealand Trophy Team comprises Helensville’s Tom Buxton, Howick’s Liam Draper, Cambridge’s Dylan Yearbury and Whanganui’s Seth Reardon. Reardon was elevated from the reserves after Christchurch’s Hamish Macdonald, currently based in Europe and racing the enduro world championships, was recently side-lined with injury. The New Zealand Junior Team will be Oparau’s James Scott, Wairoa’s Tommy Watts and Taupo’s Wil Yeoman. Rangiora’s Ben Dando, Oratia’s Callan May, Waitoki’s Ben Cottrill and Helensville’s Josh Jack will also tackle the ISDE in France and will be on standby as reserve riders if a current Trophy or Junior team member becomes injured.
Dan Watson, a Kiwi who now calls Zambia his home, will travel as a support rider, with Levin’s Dan Walker yet to confirm, but also likely to join as a support rider. Yearbury, Reardon, Watts and Scott have been champions on the New Zealand scene in recent years, Yearbury winning the national enduro crown last year and Reardon in 2019. Watts was the 2021 national cross-country champion and Scott wrapped up the 2022 cross-country title just last month. “What our riders are facing here at home is all very good training for the ISDE. We are doing a lot of extra training too,” said Stevenson. “We recently completed a day of training with (Kiwi enduro legend) Sean Clarke in Taupo and this week we have two days of training with (New Zealand’s multi-time United States cross-country champion) Paul Whibley at his Taikorea facility, just outside Palmerston North. “Hopefully we will be able to build this long term too, to get back into the swing of New Zealand sending a contingent to the ISDE every year from here forward.”
