those who have been instrumental in establishing Gandhi Nivas, an innovative early intervention and prevention, residential facility for perpetrators of domestic violence. “I am going to acknowledge them at the awards night on March 31 starting with Sucharita and the Sahaayta team of counsellors; the young constable Gurpreet Arora who pushed for the idea of Gandhi Nivas. All this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of deputy commissioner John Tims, a true enabler; as well as National Engagement manager NZ Police, Rakesh Naidoo for moving government rank in Wellington. All I did was look outside the square and do my bit,” she says. Patel is equally grateful to the “amazing team of doctors, nurses and staff at Tamaki Health,” New Zealand’s largest independent healthcare group. “We started our first clinic in Otara by borrowing 110 per cent. I was the receptionist, accountant and cleaner while my husband Kanti treated patients. Today I’m proud to say that if I ask our team with a positive, can-do attitude, “can you jump for me, they will ask how high?” says Patel.

SAVING LOCAL RESERVES

In August last year the Local Board was asked to provide feedback on the disposal of local properties as part of Auckland Council’s Emergency Budget asset recycling. PUMP TRACK A HUGE HIT

Dads, mums, teens and tots have all descended on Nixon Park to enjoy the recently installed pump track. Designed for skaters, scooters and bikers of all ages, this new addition to the park has proved to be very popular. It has been great to see users share the facility among different age groups. The success of this facility also requires that respect be shown to nearby bowlers and their bowling greens. Please adhere to the signage, and check whether this can be used in the current Covid level.

The reason Alice delayed her hen’s do was because her sister Sophie had specially flown in from Sydney for the wedding. We were waiting for Sophie to come out of managed isolation from a quarantine hotel in Auckland. It meant a lot to have her with us for the special day,” says the 31-year-old bride-to-be. “I was so heart-broken when I heard the news. I called Zach who was driv-

ride-to-be Alice Kennedy was at her hen’s night having the time of her life, when her older sister Sophie took her aside to inform her of the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s announcement. Auckland was going into level-3 lockdown, by 6am the following day (March 1). Shocked and devastated, Alice found it hard to process the news. This can’t be happening again, she thought. After spending close to two years planning the biggest day of her life, she would have to postpone the wedding—for a second time. Alice and Zach Bell’s wedding had been scheduled for March 6 at Everybody’s Bar and Eatery, in the CBD. The first time, the newly engaged couple had set the date for October 24, 2020 and had sent out a save-thedate invite to family and friends. “One week later, we went into lockdown. We were in lockdown for a month. To take the stress away and give us some breathing space, we decid-

ing home after a drink with a friend to come and be with me. At that moment I just needed Zac by my side. My mum, sister and brother were all very supportive.” Zach, a commercial pricing coordinator says that while they were upset and frustrated with their wedding being postponed twice, they hope they “are third time lucky.” The wedding is now rescheduled to June 19. Zach and Alice say that though it’s very upsetting and hard to deal with their predicament, they do understand it is important to keep the country safe. “We count ourselves lucky to be living in this country.” Zach’s mum Kerry Bell who is part of the distribution team of Times Media says the disruption is hard to take at a time they were all looking forward to the wedding. “We had booked in the make-up, hair, tans and then we got the news at the hen’s party. I couldn’t deal with it so I just went home. It’s sad that after a weeklong lockdown, there were no community cases.”

Man pleads not guilty to Elizabeth Zhong’s murder T

he man accused of murdering east Auckland woman Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong has denied the charge. Zhong, 55, was found dead inside her vehicle on November 28 last year. Her Land Rover had been parked in Roadley Avenue, Sunnyhills, a short distance from her three-storey Suzetta Place home. The last confirmed sighting of the businesswoman was at about 4.30pm on November 27. On February 12 Counties Manukau Police publicly announced the arrest of a 47-year-old man in relation to Zhong’s death. He appeared in the Manukau District Court the same day. The man was remanded in custody and has reappeared in the Auckland High Court on March 10. He pleaded not guilty to Zhong’s murder and was granted continued name suppression. He’s scheduled to go on trial

in April next year. A court charging document seen by the Times states police believe the man killed Zhong in Sunnyhills between November

27 and November 28 last year. His occupation was not stated on the document. Police have described Zhong’s family as being “devastated” by

her death. She was the director of the company Digital Post Limited, which is based in Epsom, central Auckland.

A Farm Cove family clipped their heads on Saturday to raise money for blood cancer. Team Bason, headed by Paul Bason who lost his wife Nicky to cancer, raised an incredible $15,799 with his family via their Shave for a Cure fundraising page. “Most of you know Nicky’s journey with blood cancer and if we can help other people with blood cancer to have a better outcome that would be incredible,” Paul said on their Shave for a Cure page. “There are some amazing new treatments available for blood cancers and everyone should have access to them.” Donations flowed in for Paul, his brothers Mark and Scott and their father Bill (81) through their fundraising page “for this great cause, we are all shaving our heads in support of Nicky and all blood cancer patients”. ➤ People can still donate after the shave. HOWICK

VILLAGE

Time for retail therapy

Music unlocked – again! Covid restrictions have played havoc with many lives and amongst the casualties has been Howick’s popular Thursdays @ Seven concert series at All Saints Church. After a great start on February 25 with a piano recital by Chris Greenslade, two concerts have had to be cancelled. Also artists coming from outside of Auckland have had to change their plans. Concert coordinators, Katharine and Peter Watts say that the concert on March 18 will go ahead provided Auckland is in Level 1 ... but with a change of artist. Instead of the visiting Duo Enharmonics from Wellington, the concert will be given by brilliant 21-yearold local pianist, Tony Chen. Of his winning performance at the Wallace National Piano Competition in 2019 the adjudicator said: “Here was playing of a posi-

COMMUNITY

‘It looks like they’ve made their mind up’ T

he number of residents trying to stop the sale of east Auckland’s public green spaces is growing. Auckland Council has notified the public it wishes to revoke the reserve status of parks at 111R Golfland Drive, 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, and part of the site of a former fuel station at 2R Ti Rakau Drive, so they can be disposed of. A lengthy legal process, which involves sign-off from the Government, must be completed before that can happen. The move is part of an effort by the council to raise money through its emergency budget, which requires $224 million to be realised from “asset recycling”. Residents who live in or near Aberfeldy Avenue are fighting to protect their local park from being sold. They’re taking part in a letterbox drop of information about the proposed sale and how members of the public can make a submission if they oppose the move. Michelle Varga lives directly

across from the reserve. She says Howick and much of Auckland is experiencing growth in housing intensification, so “why do we need to develop on reserves?” “They say we don’t need this reserve and we can just go to Lloyd Elsmore Park, but they’re completely different. This is a much quieter space. At Lloyd Elsmore, it’s sporting and it’s chaos on the weekend. That’s not where you go for your walk, or where you walk your dog, or if you’ve got young children to spend a bit of time outside.”

Resident Rashna Tata says Covid-19 and the resulting lockdowns have slowed their efforts to door knock and raise awareness of the council’s plan to sell the parks. “We want to get the word out as soon as possible. They’re [the council] telling us you’ve got all this green space but the problem is that when it’s gone, it’s gone. “It looks like they’ve made their mind up so we want to make as much noise as possible.” David Dwerryhouse lives adjacent to the reserve. He’s

concerned about the potential impact on the street if the land is sold to a property developer. “This is a quiet, pleasant neighbourhood. If an intensified housing development goes up here, which is on the cards, this will put extra pressure on local infrastructure. “There will be more traffic, more cars parking on the road and it will alter the whole character of the neighbourhood.” Husband and wife Ian and Catherine Roycroft also oppose the reserve’s potential sale. “My kids grew up playing on these fields. We have grandchildren on the way and we’d like to see this as somewhere they can play. This is an area for families. During Covid so many people would come and play here with their kids. When they are here they are safe,” Catherine says. ➤ People who wish to object to the proposed revocation of the properties’ reserve status can email their objection to propertyreview@aucklandcouncil. govt.nz or write to the Chief Executive, Auckland Council, Private Bag 92300, Auckland 1142, Attention: Moira Faumui, no later than 5pm on March 31.

USE YOUR

BRAIN

1. Age-related hormones decline 2. Sedentary lifestyle

Use it or lose it – simple advice from NZ memory and brain health experts for brain awareness month. March is Brain Awareness Month so it’s the perfect time for us all to stop and think about what we’re doing to look after our memory and all-round brain health.

Research now shows that the human brain is growing and changing throughout our lives and we can control three of the four causes of brain aging in just a few minutes a day. Naturally, the more you do, the better but regardless of whether you are 35 or 80-years-old, Brainfit Coach Jude Walter, says it is never too late to start strengthening your brain. “Amidst the craziness of life, some ‘forgetting’ is quite normal but don’t forgive yourself too easily. Memory lapses not only waste huge amounts

So, what are Jude’s top tips? ➤ Believe in your memory – selfbelief is essential to a strong healthy brain. Remember you can control three of the four factors that cause brain aging so never say never and don’t be afraid to try new things. ➤ Focus – When you pay attention and actively register details you are creating strong memory traces. The more memory traces you have, the easier it will be to recall that information later. Think of it like shining a torch on the information you need to recall later. ➤ Connect – Try connecting the information you want to remember to

4. Poor nutrition & obesity (These affect heart health and blood supply to the brain) Hormonal changes are behond our control but we can influence the other factors via a happy, healthy, active, balanced lifestyle. something or someone you already know – it could be an image, a funny story, a song. This will help to further strengthen the memory traces and aid recall.

adding up the numbers on the number plate in front of you while you sit in traffic. If you can do this, you will see a noticeable improvement in memory in just a few weeks.

➤ Rehearse – Repeating information as soon as possible afterwards is also good for embedding the memory so make a point of telling someone else as soon as you get home or repeat a new person’s name while you are still talking to them.

➤ Look after yourself – good food, water, exercise and sleep are essential for all round health and wellbeing, but they are also extremely good for the brain and memory. Exercise helps to improve blood flow to the brain while water and food fuel the brain, which needs twice as much energy than any other cells in your body!

➤ Practise – Different parts of the brain are activated by different tasks. The key is to try a variety of activities as newness gives your brain a full workout and keeps the mind sharp. It could be as simple as switching from doing the Sudoku to a jigsaw puzzle once a week, walking to the shops along a different route, trying to memorise your shopping list or

Transitional medicinal cannabis regulations will be extended by six months to 30 September 2021 as a result of Covid-19 to ensure certainty of supply, Health Minister Andrew Little says. “The Government is committed to making the system work and continuing access to prescribed medicinal cannabis products for patients who need them,” Little said.

will be still able to access products, while suppliers have the additional time they need to apply to the Medicinal Cannabis Agency for verification.

“Two products from one company have been verified under the new regulations. However the Government wants to see multiple suppliers for price competitiveness.

“The Government remains committed to bringing in the new regulation standards because patients and doctors deserve to know that medicinal cannabis products contain what the ingredient list says, are free from contaminants and are safe to consume,” Andrew Little said.

“Covid -19 restrictions have limited the abilities of companies to apply under the regulations, has affected global supply chains and also added challenges to suppliers seeking to have products assessed. “I am mindful of the risk that wholesalers could suspend imports in advance of the April 1 deadline and this would prevent patients from accessing prescribed medicines. “By extending the deadline, patients

The Misuse of Drugs (Medicinal Cannabis) Regulations 2019 came into effect on April 1 last year. The Regulations set a minimum quality standard for medicinal cannabis ingredients and products and introduced a licensing regime to enable the establishment of a domestic industry to cultivate, manufacture and supply medicinal cannabis.

TARGETING THOSE

MOST AT RISK conditions and those who live in locations where we know outbreaks have occurred.

The Government is targeting those most at risk of getting and spreading Covid-19 and those most at risk of getting seriously sick from it in the next phase of the vaccine roll-out, Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins announced last week.

“We are asking all New Zealanders to get vaccinated. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect your whānau, their lives and their livelihoods.

“A top priority this year is to make sure New Zealanders get free, fair and equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines,” Hipkins said. “We are setting out the plan today after securing enough Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for everyone in New Zealand to get the two doses they need to be fully vaccinated against the virus. The Ministry of Health is working with Pfizer on a delivery schedule to ensure a smooth rollout and a scaling up of our vaccination programme.” More than 2 million New Zealanders are in line to start receiving the vaccine over the next four months with a focus on protecting those most at risk of getting the virus or being harmed by it, while also reducing the

This shipment of around 64,000 doses arrived as airfreight at Auckland International Airport, bringing the country’s total number of COVID-19 vaccines to around 265,000 enough to vaccinate more than 132,000 people with two doses needed for maximum protection. Image supplied

chance of ongoing spread and future outbreaks. “Our plan is clear - first protect those most at risk of picking up the virus in their workplace, reducing the risk of future outbreaks and lockdowns and then protecting those most at risk of getting seriously ill if they get the virus,” Hipkins said.

“Our sequencing plan provides certainty to the over 2m Kiwis who can expect to start being vaccinated during the initial stages of our roll-out over the next three to four months. “This is a balanced plan that prioritises reducing the chance of future outbreaks while protecting our elders, those with underlying health

“Every New Zealander will be able to get a vaccine and the vaccine will be free. The rest of the population will be able to be vaccinated from July onwards and our plan is to have as many people as possible vaccinated by the end of the year. “As with the rest of our Covid-19 response we will make continuous improvements and adjustments to the vaccination roll-out. Our goal is to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible and that will require some flexibility within the sequencing. “Further planning is underway on our ongoing response to Covid-19 including our management of the border. ➤ Turn to page 7

There are four main groups (timings will overlap, and dates might shift slightly as the Ministry continues to undertake modelling):

Group 1 50,000 border and MIQ workers, their household contacts and the people they live with. This started last month and the vast bulk will be completed this month, with at least one dose administered.

Group 2 Approximately 480,000 frontline workers and people living in high-risk settings. Starting with the 57,000 healthcare

Group 3 Priority populations. Approximately 1.7 million people who are at higher risk if they catch Covid-19. This is planned to start in May.

Group 4 The remainder of the general population - approximately 2 million people. Starting from July. “Approximately 40,000 courses are being allocated to Māori and Pacific providers who are working directly with older people, and we are also recognising the special circumstances of South Auckland,” Hipkins said.

“Anyone who lives in the Counties Manukau DHB area who is 65 and older or who has an underlying health condition is also in Group 2. “This recognises that there are many border operations and MIQ facilities and their workforces based in this area. Hipkins said there will be a range of options to make it as easy as possible for people to access to the vaccine. “Workers and residents of long-term residential care environments will get the vaccine at their workplace. There will also be Māori and Pacific providers, pop-up centres, GPs, medical and hauora centres, community clinics and larger scale events. “An online tool that helps people find out when they can get the vaccine will be launched shortly. It describes the four broad groups and will take

people through a series of questions to work out when it’ll be their turn. “There are two further categories we are still looking at: one for people who may need to get a vaccine on compassionate grounds; and a national significance category, which could include groups who need a vaccine in order to represent New Zealand overseas. Decisions around these categories will be made at Cabinet in coming weeks.” ➤ Plan prioritises people most at risk of harm if they get the virus and those who live and work in places where they are most likely to pick up COVID-19 ➤ Those in South Auckland who’re over 65 or who have underlying health issues to start being vaccinated from the end of March ➤ Minimising risk of future outbreaks central to Government plan and prioritisation

RECYCLING

E-waste drop-off comes to Pakuranga A

uckland company Computer Recycling is hosting 30+ e-waste drop-off days around the city, including Pakuranga, providing opportunities for locals to divert their e-waste from ending up in local landfills. Computer Recycling is working with neighbourhood groups over 30 collection days – dubbed “CR E-days”. Local community centres across the city have volunteered their spaces for the events, allowing Kiwis dispose of their e-waste. The company will also be using the collection events to fundraise for Variety – The Children’s Charity. All charity donations made by the public during the CR E-days will be matched by Computer Recycling. The company has already run four successful events in 2021, with the schedule for the remainder of the year rolling out over the coming months. The next three confirmed events of 2021 will be held on: • March 20 – Trinity Methodist Church, 474 Pakuranga Road, Pakuranga

During CR E-Days in 2020, Computer Recycling was able to collect and divert more than 18,000kg of discarded electronic waste otherwise destined for landfill. Photo supplied

• March 27 – Westgate Baptist Church, 67 Hobsonville Road, West Harbour • May 15 – Massey University Gate 1, University Avenue, Albany During CR E-Days in 2020, Computer Recycling was able to collect and divert more than 18,000kg of discarded electronic waste otherwise destined for landfill. In total, more than 400 households came through the events to drop-off their unwanted electronics. “Our goal for the CR E-day events is to collect and divert over 300,000kgs of

e-waste from landfill in 2021,” says Computer Recycling owner and director Patrick Moynahan. “There is no New Zealandbased framework or legislation as to how Kiwis dispose of their unwanted e-waste, but so far it has been really encouraging to see how much people are looking to do the right thing when it comes to disposing of their old tech.” All e-waste collected from the events is taken back to Computer Recycling’s site in Onehunga. From there, the waste is sorted, graded and

split into two categories: reuse or recycling. ➤ Reuse: any items that still may have a second life. Computer Recycling’s team of technicians will delete any data still left on the device and remove any markings. The items will then be refurbished to a usable condition and sold back into the community. ➤ Recycle: items that can no longer be re-used are dismantled by Recycling Technicians. The different components are separated and graded as either general scrap metals or e-scrap. All e-scrap is exported under Environmental Protection Agency permits to facilities in Asia and Europe to be return into base elements to be used again. Moynahan said the average Kiwi produces more than 20kg of e-waste per year – one of the highest per capita amounts globally – and New Zealand is the only country in the OECD without a national e-waste scheme. Of the 80,000 tonnes of e-waste created each year, it is estimated less than 2 per cent of the total is recycled.

GMT signals $415m second half portfolio revaluation Goodman Property Trust (GMT), the stock exchange-listed company which owns Highbrook Business Park, has announced it financial result for the year ending March 31, 2021 is expected to contain a significant property revaluation gain. Draft valuation reports from independent valuers indicate that GMT’s property portfolio will post a second half gain of approximately $415 million or around 12.5 per cent. The positive outcome is in addition to the $140m revaluation recorded in the first half and, as a result, the portfolio is expected to have a value of around $3.8 billion at March 31, 2021. John Dakin, chief executive officer said, “We continue to see strong demand for space, tight supply conditions, low vacancy and solid underlying rental growth across our portfolio. “This, combined with relatively low interest rates, has fuelled investor demand, particularly for high-quality logistics and warehouse property. The market capitalisation rate across the portfolio has strengthened 50bps from September 30, 2020 to 4.7 per cent.” The increase in portfolio value over the last six months is expected to add around 30 cents per unit to GMT’s NTA (Net Tangible Asset backing) which was 182.4 cents per unit at 30 September 2020. The revaluation remains subject to finalisation and independent audit. It is also contingent on there being no material change in market conditions before March 31, 2021, the effective date of the valuation reports. Further details will be provided with the Trust’s FY21 annual result announcement in May 2021.

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS? As I was taking my daily lockdown walk, I went past Rosscourt and noticed one of the shops was getting a new facelift and they had removed their front sign. Underneath was an original sign for a business that was once there, for an electrical components shop. I grew up in Howick during the ‘70s and ‘80s and have no recollection of this shop. I thought it might be fun to ask readers on any information or stories regarding this now-long possibly forgotten shop.

‘DON’T TELL OLDIES WHAT TO DO’ In reply to Jo Millar (Times, March 2), I find your attitude extremely condescending. I and other seniors like myself have come through a World War. Times were tough. We looked after each other and we cared.

I resent being told what “my duty” is, resent being told ad infinitum to wash my hands, wear a mask etc. We oldies look after ourselves. The best way to look after younger generations is by teaching them to eat healthy food, give them plenty of sunshine and exercise and improve their immune system. As for setting an example, I have found that the younger generations do anything but follow our example – in anything. As for the vaccine, you can have my share Jo.

’ISRAEL HAS OBLIGATIONS’ Re: Infrastructure neglected 9 (by Botany MP Christopher Luxon, Times, March 2). I compare New Zealand with Israel and Taiwan - as Christopher Luxon did. In Israel, 52 per cent Israelis have received the first dose, and 37 per cent the second dose. There is a

sharp drop of Covid-19 cases. Under the Fourth Geneva Convention, Israel must ensure “the adoption and application of the prophylactic and preventive measures necessary to combat the spread of contagious diseases and epidemics” in the occupied Palestinian territory. So far, the Palestinians have received 2000 vaccines out of 5000 promised by Israel: 10,000 doses of Sputnik V from Russia (a delay occurred as Israel controls the borders) and 20,000 from UAE via Egypt (opened border with Gaza Strip). Covid-19 cases are soaring due to the irregular supply for the 5 million Palestinians. The Israeli obligation is not fulfilled. Taiwan experienced a SARS outbreak 20 years ago. The mortality was very high; everything was disorganised. They learned from it so were prepared for this pandemic.

COCKLES MUST BE PROTECTED Re: Brian Robertson’s letter (Times, March 9). David Parker is now the minister of fisheries (Ed: Oceans and Fisheries) and it is on his shoulders to take action and impose an S11 closure for Cockle Bay. Fisheries NZ late last year had a discussion paper looking at the problem and called for submissions but this was not well publicised and very hard to find and to put in

a submission. Our new Member of Parliament Chris Luxon has taken up the case and, no doubt, will put pressure on the Government to implement this closure. It is well overdue as shellfish numbers have been declining for many years. One overlooked effect of the large number of collectors each open season is the removal of shell (cockles) off our beach. It has been calculated that this could be up to 20 cubic metres of shell over a one-month period. This is disrupting the whole ecosystem and we now have large areas of soft mud and silt which, in the past, would be covered in dead shellfish. The shellfish are not there just for us to collect and eat. They are food for the fish and seabirds and they break down and build our beaches.

LOCAL CYCLING

Here in the Howick/Pakuranga/ Botany district, we are privileged to have some excellent recreational areas. Not the least are the paths stretching to Panmure or Burswood and beyond. These paths are a delight and are jointly much-used by walkers, cyclists and others. To maximise our pleasure and safety, we should be aware of some of the things that may jeopardise this. As cyclists on the paths, the things we need to be aware of are walkers with ear buds, or those

using mobiles phones, or even both of these together, racing cyclists taking a break from the road, path condition, blind corners, skateboards (powered or not), wheelchairs and of course children and dogs. In all of these conditions, we should slow down or even stop until it is safe to continue. We must anticipate a child or dog suddenly moving out in front of us. Expect a hidden rider or person reaching that blind corner at exactly the same time as we do. In our opinion, a very audible bell is an absolute must-have and to be used often. The number of times we are congratulated by others on the path for using it is proof enough that they are far rarer than they should be. Enjoy our great facilities whatever you do. Be safe and, if you ride a bike and don’t have that bell, we strongly recommend it.

Reducing pets’ global plastic ‘paw-print’ W

hen Steph Kernot welcomed a second cat into her home in 2020, one of the first things the animal-lover did was head to the shops to purchase toys, bowls, accessories and a bed for her furry friend. However, the shopping trip did not go as expected. Steph returned home with a couple of items, leaving much of what she’d seen behind at the shop. Disappointed by the amount of plastic used to make animal accessories and toys, not to mention the plastic packaging, she began exploring other options. “There are many amazing plastic free alternatives now for us humans, but what I discovered was that pets weren’t catered for in the same way as we are,” explains Steph, a former student at Botany Downs Secondary College. “Anyone who has a pet will understand that they are a special part of the family and therefore they should be provided with products that are safe, fun and educational.” Steph grew increasingly concerned about the impact her furry friends would have on

her household’s environmental footprint. “There are a lot of single use items for pets, such as plastic toys, that once chewed or used for a period of time, get thrown into the rubbish bin and end up in landfill. Our purchasing choices for animals are contributing to the environmental issues!” When she started delving deeper, she was shocked to learn about the detrimental effect that plastic materials many containing lead, BPAs and Phthalates - could also have on her animals’ health. The toxins present in plastic and synthetic fibres can be extremely harmful to animals, in the same way they would be harmful to humans.

S AR

During the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, Steph decided to take the matter into her own hands and launched Plastic Free Pets, in collaboration with her business partner Andrea Pillay. She started designing handcrafted natural products for animals - hessian sack dog beds filled with natural woollen fibres, vintage cane basket cat beds, rope toys, cat scratching panels and dog leads made from sustainable fibres. All products in the Plastic Free Pets range are made in New Zealand. Steph ensures all her products, packaging and transportation parcels do not contain any plastic or harmful additives, making them good for each pet owner, their pets and the planet. “I’m not your typical ‘greenie’. I’ve always worked in brand and marketing, predicting the next trends and where the market is at. Creating and eco-friendly pet store fills a gap in the market. Our products are totally plasticfree so our clients don’t need to worry about the environmental impact of their purchases.” Steph, who spends her time living between Flat Bush and the Coromandel town of

Whitianga, where she also runs Peninsula Marketing Solutions, is on a mission to make plasticfree products for pets accessible to everyone. “By using our products, animals can also play their part in helping reduce waste and improve sustainability. There is nothing like this in the market and nothing like this in NZ. There’s an opportunity for change and I think a lot of Kiwis will get behind it as they are really taking on the Zero waste and anti-plastic movement.” In addition to developing a range of practical and safe plastic-free pet products, Plastic Free Pets has designed its range with interior style in mind. Feline cat scratch pads can be attached to the walls of a home, blending in with the décor and dog beds sit nicely in the corner of a room or complement an outdoor space. “Our designs are both easy on the environment - and the eye! I love interior design and therefore every piece we have created has been designed with love to fit in with modern interiors and look amazing in the home while being educational for pets and are made to last.”

Battle of house sale erupts on stage ➤ What: The House ➤ Where: Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga ➤ When: Season runs until March 27 (Wed to Sat, 8pm), 2pm matinee on March 21. By CHRIS HARROWELL An explosive tug-of-war over a beloved house leads two couples to unravel as they vie to claim the property as their own. Howick Little Theatre’s first production for 2021 is the comedy The House. It’s written by Brian Parks and directed by actor and former east Auckland local Ashton Brown. The comedic play makes use of a simple set, as all the action takes place in the home’s living room, and a small cast of just four actors. It’s set in a suburban home in an unspecified part of the United States. The house’s reluctant sellers, Martyn and Shanny Redmond, are played by actors Stephen Diver and Catherine Maunsell, with its enthusiastic buyers, Fischer and Lindsay Libett, played by actors James Calverley and Izzy Renton. The action starts out in fairly normal fashion as the Libetts arrive at the house to celebrate their purchase over a drink with the Redmonds and receive the property’s keys. Things quickly turn sour when the Redmonds learn that the Libetts, who they believed were the ideal couple to sell to, have grand designs for it. They want to renovate and extend into the backyard, which will result in the destruction of Shanny’s much-loved garden. That news exposes the fact the Red-

The action builds as the two couples’ competing interests clash and their confrontations move from verbal to physical. Their arguments become increasingly personal and eventually reveal that one of them may be slightly racist. More than a little alcohol is consumed throughout, which only draws more anger and hostility to the surface. The four actors do an excellent job of turning up the heat as their conflict builds toward a violent crescendo that will leave the audience, and possibly the characters, in stitches. $1m hydrogen-powered bus for eastern route By CHRIS HARROWELL

S

ome public transport commuters travelling between east Auckland and the central city will soon be able to do so in the comfort of a $1 million hydrogen-powered bus. Auckland Transport (AT) plans to trial the innovative passenger vehicle alongside a battery-electric bus of a similar size. It will be operated by Howick and Eastern Buses on route 70 from Botany to Britomart via Panmure and is scheduled to be on the road in early April. The trial will run for two years. The hydrogen bus was built by Global Bus Ventures in Christchurch and costs $1.175m. AT spokeswoman Natalie Polley says the initiative is part of the organisation’s work with Ports of Auckland and it will be the first hydrogen bus used in New Zealand. “The bus will be refuelled with hydrogen at Ports of Auckland’s temporary refuelling station at the port’s yard. “Through the development of the

low emission bus roadmap, AT has identified hydrogen as a potential fuel for the city’s future low-emission public transport fleet. “AT has been assessing hydrogen fuel-cell bus options to support the transition to zero emission buses and is a key partner of the hydrogen demonstration project with Ports of Auckland.” Howick and Eastern Buses gen-

eral manager Sheryll Otway says the company’s drivers are “excited to be amongst the first in New Zealand to get behind the wheel of this hydrogen-fuelled vehicle”. “The bus is sleek, quiet and comfortable, but shows presence. “Hydrogen technology is continuing to evolve and has been proven as being a safe and sustainable fuel for heavy vehicles, including buses.

Changes to Polyfest in a Covid environment A change in Auckland’s alert levels and students back at school is welcome news for the organisers of the ASB Polyfest. This year’s revised format sees this year’s Polyfest taking place from April 14-17, a later date than the usual mid-March timeframe. Attendance trending down T

he most alarming and confronting statistic I have read since becoming an MP is that only

58 per cent of our children are attending school regularly - meaning more than 90 per cent of the time.

Irrespective of Covid-19, attendance has been on a downward trajectory for the last four years. It’s a mas-

World Day of Prayer building fondations The World Day of Prayer, an Ecumenical Service, will be held this year on Friday, March 19, 10.30am at St Andrew’s Church, corner of Vincent St and Ridge Road in the historic chapel. It was initially scheduled for March 5 but had to be postponed due to lockdown. “The services are always prepared by the women of countries all over the world, this year by our Pacific neighbours from Vanuatu,” a spokesperson said. The theme “Building a Strong Foundation” is especially meaningful, when they remember the devastation after Cyclone Pam in 2015, we remember the Christchurch earthquake 10 years ago, and the impact of Covid shaking the foundations of many lives. Everyone is welcome and invited to light refreshments afterwards. ➤ Contact person is Crystal, phone 534 8778.

reading, maths and science have slipped, in some cases markedly. New Zealand’s ranking in reading literacy fell from 13 to 30 out of 41 countries between 2001 and 2016, our maths achievement in 2019 ranked 30 out of the 32 OECD countries, and our relative science achievement was similarly poor with a ranking of 29 out of 32 OECD countries. Yet, while we could always spend more, it really is not an investment issue. At the same time, New Zealand’s per-pupil education spending on primary and secondary students has increased substantially, both in absolute and relative terms. One important factor to our significant decline in educational achievement might be the child-centred philosophy that has taken root within New Zealand’s education system. The current teaching philosophy says students should be leading their own learning and teachers only facilitate rather than lead and instruct directly from the front of the classroom. My personal view is that we must move

Christopher Luxon away from a child-centred learning philosophy towards evidence-based teacher-lead instruction. This change should be supported by mandatory standardised national assessment and a new national curriculum based on disciplinary knowledge, not competencies. New Zealand’s rapidly falling international performance in the basics of reading, maths and science should be extremely concerning for all of us. I worry, not because of a graph on a league table, but because of the strong link between educational attainment and higher wages. Higher wages and greater job opportunities underpin the choices that New Zealand families have in how they live their lives. I want those choices to be better for more New Zealand families. sive challenge for schools with 300,000 children not attending school regularly. Lots of talk and concern from this government is not the same as implementing real actions to drastically improve attendance results. There clearly are insufficient consequences for schools and parents when children are truant. Instead we’re creating, as my colleague Paul Goldsmith has said, “a culture of excuses” that focus too much on trying to make schools attractive to students, rather than on the consequences for non-attendance. Of course, parents are critical to this problem and need to make sure that their kids are getting to school. It is part of their responsibility as a citizen. The No.1 job has to be getting our children to school and attending regularly before we work out what and how to teach them. However, there have been a number of worrying international reports and surveys highlighting our declining primary and secondary students’ educational performance. As a result, our international rankings in

CONSUMER NZ

Know your rights to refunds for all those cancelled events J

ust as we come out of Level 3 lockdown in Auckland, some consumers may have tickets to concerts and other events that have now been cancelled. “Covid-19 has created uncertainty about events. Where shows need to be cancelled or postponed due to the latest lockdown, promoters should be keeping customers informed about what’s happening and when refunds will be provided,” Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said. If you’ve purchased tickets to an event that’s not going ahead, here’s what you can expect: • My event has been cancelled: if the show is cancelled, you should get a refund from the ticket agent. Check the event website for updates or call the ticket agent directly. You can find cancellations and postponements for Ticketek here and Ticketmaster here. • The date of my event has changed: if the date of your event has been changed and it doesn’t suit, you are entitled to a refund. The only exception would be if the postponement was allowed for and made clear before you booked. • My ticket agent won’t process a refund: if the ticket agent refuses to process a refund for a cancelled or postponed event, contact

your bank and ask for a chargeback (a refund to your credit or debit card). • I bought my ticket from a private seller. What can I do? If you purchased a ticket from a private seller, rather than an official ticket agent, it might be trickier to get a refund. Ticket agents may have terms and conditions stating that if they’re aware a ticket has been resold, they won’t honour it. If an event is cancelled, the ticket agent is only obliged to provide a refund to the original purchaser. If you have the details of the original ticket holder, you could ask them for a refund. • I bought my ticket from a ticket resale site. What are my rights? Ask the resale site for a refund. If it refuses, you may be able to get a charge-

back (a refund to your credit or debit card). • Are there different rules for charity events? No, restrictions remain the same whether an event is run by a commercial company or charity. If the charity fundraiser or event is run by a small community group and you want to offer support, consider donating the money you spent on your ticket rather than seeking a refund. • I booked flights and accommodation for my event. What should I do? Ticket agents aren’t required to compensate you for other costs, such as airline tickets or accommodation. You’ll need to contact the airline or hotel directly about a credit or refund. If you purchased a package deal, contact the seller of that package.

owick Pakuranga Netball Centre (HPNC) are part of a pilot programme with Netball New Zealand and Cadbury (NNZ’s official volunteer partner) to develop capability and management of volunteers HPNC has relied on volunteers throughout its 57 years to run programmes, game days and general organisation. With time now a luxury in many people’s lives, volunteer work is declining. However with the support of Cadbury and NNZ, HPNC wants to reinvigorate that space. HPNC’s Robyn Garner said, “There are many areas where volunteer help can benefit the netball centre and make a difference from providing behind-the-scenes assistance to fronting activities and programmes. “With so many current and past members living locally, HPNC is hoping to increase its volunteer numbers.
