Blewett organised the welcome home reception for Sydney 2000 Paralympians Convenor of Selectors for the Para swimming team to the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games PNZ Board member from 2001 to 2008.

Blewett was an advanced swimming instructor and coach for non-disabled and disabled swimmers, a role that she had held since 1971.

She coached paralympians in their early days, in addition to other athletes, saying she prefers to get swimmers started on their swimming pathway and then pass them on to their next coach.

istance swimmer Sandra Blewett of Cockle Bay has died. Blewett, who moved to Pakuranga Park retirement village in September 2022, died peacefully on January 1 aged 74.

Her death notice read, “Much loved daughter of the late Jack and Aileen.

Sister of Rick, Chrissie and the late Terry and aunty to their respective children.”

Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) awarded the PNZ Order of Merit to Blewett in 2022 for outstanding service to Paralympics New Zealand and Para sport in New Zealand. Blewett was involved within Para sport in New Zealand for more than 25 years in a variety of roles including: NZ Para swimming classifier from 1996, to just recently in March 2022.

Luxon: Taxpayers to finally catch a break W

elcome to 2024. I hope everyone out there enjoyed some time with friends and family over the Christmas-New Year period.

I had a wonderful summer spending time with my family and getting some home projects done – which included some water blasting and painting a shed.

This year is going to be great with much for the Government to deliver and, just like my shed, we are going to get it done.

Already we have seen some great outcomes as a result of this Government’s actions.

Over the summer, the coalition Government listened to the health sector who were concerned about the increase in frequent violent incidents in emergency

departments.

The safety of the health workforce and patients is a priority, so eight emergency departments across the country – four Auckland hospitals, along with Waikato, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin – each received an additional five security staff for an extended period until the end of February.

We were pleased to see reports from Middlemore Hospital, where it was noted that violent incidents have nearly halved since the Health Minister Dr Shane Reti stepped up with extra security.

There’s no place for people being abusive or aggressive towards staff, who are doing their absolute best for their fellow New Zealanders in often stressful sit-

uations, so we are pleased to see positive results from this Government’s quick action.

A focus for the coalition Government is on students’ school achievement. For too long, our education system has delivered poor outcomes for learners, but we plan to turn this around.

That’s why, in our first 100 days, the coalition Government moved with urgency to remove distractions from classrooms by banning cell phone use during the school day in order to lift engagement and achievement.

This will start from Term 2 this year for all schools.

This Government has high aspirations for our learners and we refuse to leave essential learning to chance.

This is a Government that believes fundamentally that people deserve to keep more of what they earn. After six years of being treated like a bottomless ATM, taxpayers are finally going to catch a break.

I look forward to announcing more details around tax relief for low-and-middle income earners in the coming months.

Kiwis voted for a Government focused on the issues that matter and there is a lot of work to do to make sure that we deliver. I look forward to a year of delivery.

If the basics are taught properly, it makes everything after that easier. I wanted to teach swimming at that early stage because when you see people realise that they can actually float and swim, watching their faces, it’s a delight.”

Blewett owned and operated the Sandra Blewett Learn to Swim School and was a swim coach for Parafed Auckland.

She dedicated most of her life to swimming, teaching, and coaching swimming, in particular for young disabled people and para athletes.

Blewett has swum more than 56 marathon swims around the world including the English Channel, Cook Strait, Foveaux Strait, the Catalina Channel in the USA and four ways across Lake Taupo.

She held endurance records of 44 hours from Whangarei to Auckland, 33 hours for a double crossing of Lake Taupō and a 25 hour swim in a heated 25 metre swimming pool.

Pakuranga Park village reported in an article last August that Blewett knew she wanted to be a marathon swimmer since she took her first swimming lessons when

she was 10 years old.

“I learned to swim with Paul Krause at Parnell Baths. The first five days I was too scared to put my head under the water, on the sixth day Paul pushed my head under and I realised nothing was going to happen.

“At the end of the week Paul tested us to see if we could swim long distances, and I managed to swim 1500 metres before they stopped me.

“That day I went home and I told my Mum and Dad I was going to swim Cook Strait, the English Channel and Foveaux Strait! All of which have been achieved.”

In 1991, Blewett was presented with an MBE (Member of the British Empire) by the Queen for services to marathon swimming.

Bluecoats return to airport Auckland Airport is delighted to have its much-loved ‘bluecoats’ customer service ambassadors back on-hand offering support and care to travellers around the airport.

The ambassador programme was put on hold in March 2020 when New Zealand’s borders closed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

But with international travel now back-to-normal and the airport’s frontline customer service roles fully staffed, the volunteer roles are being reinstated.

“Our bluecoats are treasured members of the airport community who help with almost any issue from directions to lost toys,” says Auckland Airport chief operations officer Chloe Surridge.

“Many have long-standing links to the airport as retired staff of ours or our agency partners and bring a wealth

of aviation experience that makes for a special welcome or farewell to our travellers.”

Last month 23 customer service ambassadors returned to Auckland Airport after a threeyear hiatus during the pandemic, with more expected to return in the new year.

Identified by their distinctive blue coats, the ambassadors can be found at six help desks across the domestic and international terminals.

“Just as we have missed having the bluecoats around the airport, we know many have missed the activity in our busy and buzzing terminals,” Surridge says.

“Auckland Airport has been on a recruitment drive to get our frontline team ready for the summer peak. We also have a flexible workforce coming on board for support during school holidays and other peak travel periods.

“Our bluecoats complement our frontline teams, and we are lucky to have these wonderful volunteers helping our customers in their journeys.”

Auckland Airport’s volunteer programme began in 1995.

Returning Bluecoat Paul Wong of Half Moon Bay is also happy to be back amongst the buzz of the airport.

“I travelled during the Covid-19 pandemic and saw the airport at its quietest during that time. It’s great to see it has sprung back into life and I’m loving seeing people arriving from all over the world once again,” says Wong.

His 25-year career with Bendon as a production manager quality assurance manager made him a frequent flyer and familiar with the airport experience, which means he appreciates some of the concerns or worries international trav-

ellers can experience upon arrival.

He likes to be able to greet anyone who may look anxious with a smile and tackle any problems they face with a positive attitude. Mostly. those range from how to get from A to B, connecting with transport or help with lost items.

“They appreciate that even if you can’t solve an issue they may have, we can point them in the right direction and there’s relief they have somewhere to go and someone who cares,” says Wong.

His favourite part of the role is making sure people are welcomed into the country and receive a good impression.

Being part of the ambassador programme means a lot to him personally.

“It keeps me in touch with people. I’m retired, but I can still be active in the community.”

Luna wins two medals

Xiahan (Luna) Lu, 10, from Auckland – and a recent winner in Howick – has won two medals at the Asian Youth Championships in Al-Ain. Luna recently returned from the United Arab Emirates where she was the New Zealand representative in the Under 10 Girls section at the Asian Youth Championships from December 12-22.

Luna won the gold medal in the Rapid Chess Championships and the silver medal in the Classical Chess Championships (where she won her last five games to gain a place on the podium).

There were 53 international competitors in her age group and her results are one of the finest performances in the history of New Zealand junior chess. This stellar performance comes on the back of her winning the U12 title at the Oceania Youth Chess Championships in April. Howick Pakuranga Chess Club organiser Paul Spiller said, “We can be very proud of Luna Lu’s achievement in winning the gold medal at the Asian Youth Rapid Chess Championships recently concluded in Al Ain in the girls under 10 section.

“Earlier this year Luna won a gold medal at the Oceania Youth Championships in Canberra. She also won a hard-fought match against Luna Xu in this year’s Poppies Chess Challenge in Howick as part of the International Chess Day celebrations.”

From exotic vet to air force medic Aircraftsman Nicole Fraser’s used to operating outside the norm.

A trained veterinary nurse, the former Ormiston Senior College student spent the past year working in New Zealand’s only exotic vet clinic in Auckland’s Mount Albert.

“I specialised in nursing exotic animals. This meant that I dealt with everything weird and wonderful.

From syringe feeding giant koi fish, to looking after sick penguins, to monitoring surgery on lizards,” she said.

But now, Fraser is switching out her four-legged patients for a new career altogether, training to be a Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) medic.

“I know that I will continue to be challenged, but I’m extremely excited for it,” she said.

Born in New Plymouth, Fraser spent most of her youth in Auckland, attending secondary school in Flat Bush.

She completed her RNZAF training in Decem-

“I have a real drive to do something bigger than myself. I want to get stuck in and make a difference.”

Professor named in New Year Honours E

meritus Professor Edith Marion (Marion) Jones of Northpark has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year Honours for services to education.

Jones, a Howick resident since 1966, has contributed to education in New Zealand and internationally for 40 years.

She was the Associate Dean, Postgraduate of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Studies, Auckland University of Technology (AUT) between 2001 and 2011, where she implemented the Master of Health Science across multiple majors and the Doctor of Health Science to all registered health professionals.

Jones previously helped implement the new AUT Bachelor of Health Science and the integration of disciplines to better equip those undertaking the degree. She was Dean of the Graduate Research School at AUT between 2011 and 2020, serving as the establishment lead overseeing masters and doctoral programmes.

She was instrumental in the development and implementation of AUT’s Higher Doctorate programme and has audited and

Professor Jones has been a global contributor to the development of interprofessional education, as an author, keynote speaker and member of the steering committee that established the International Federation of Perioperative Nursing.

“It’s been all quite unexpected really and I was a bit overwhelmed at first,” Jones told the Times.

“The longer I have I sat with it, the deeper the sense of privilege.

You don’t set out in life to gain these sorts of accolades but they are certainly rewarding and humbling when they come.

“Mostly, it has reminded me of how many people I have had the privilege of working with here at home/in New Zealand and globally. It has been a real highlight to reconnect with so many national and international colleagues in recent days.

“My late husband Glen gave significant encouragement to take on new directions and supported me completing my Bachelors and Masters degrees. I went on to complete my PhD in the years following his death.”

CHINESE CARMAKER PARTNERING WITH EAST AUCKLAND DEALERSHIP

A Chinese carmaker has revealed the dealer network from which its vehicles will be sold and it includes a location in east Auckland.

Omoda is headquartered in Wuhan, China, and was launched in 2022 as a division of the state-owned automobile manufacturer Chery.

The company says it’s “inching closer” toward its launch in New Zealand with 12 dealers being confirmed and further announcements coming soon.

Omoda NZ network development manager Wayne Wei says it has 11 dealers across the North Island one in the South Island.

It’s entered into agreements with a well-respected established dealer network for each region, he says.

“All the appointed dealers will offer sales, service and spares for all new Omoda owners.”

Omoda NZ country manager Sheldon Humphries says: “For launch in 2024, I believe we are well represented in the North Island.

“Phase two of the dealer set-up would see more focus on the South Island.

“Our goal is to create

customer confidence by having a well-established dealer network representing Omoda across New Zealand.”

The company’s vehicles will be sold locally at the Winger Motor Group dealership in East Tamaki.

Omoda New Zealand is accepting expressions of interest for dealer representation in three South Island cities. “Omoda NZ is extremely excited to work with this dealer network,” the company says.

“They bring a wealth of experience and are trusted in their local communities.

“Having a dealer network of this calibre supporting Omoda owners will add confidence for new owners.”

The company expects to have Omoda showrooms’ exterior branding completed in February, 2024.

Fox a Halberg Awards finalist B

eachlands golfer Ryan Fox is one of 30 finalists named across six categories for the 61st ISPS Handa Halberg Awards.

This year’s finalists, voted by a panel of former elite athletes and coaches, sports administrators, and sports media, came from 76 nominations received from national sports organisations and an independent nominations board for achievements in 2023.

The winners will be unveiled during a ceremony at Spark Arena on Wednesday, February 14. During the evening, Sport New Zealand’s Leadership Award and New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment will also be crowned. All finalists for sportswoman, sportsman, team and para athlete/para team are eligible for the Supreme Halberg Award, the pinnacle of sporting distinction in New Zealand.

The High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year award features five exceptional finalists, including last year’s Supreme winner Zoi Sadowski-Synott, who defended her X Games Slopestyle Gold Medal at the 2023 Aspen Winter X Games. who claimed the UCI Track Championships League sprint title following a world title win in the women’s keirin earlier in the year.

Also included is swimmer Erika Fairweather, who made history by becoming just the fifth woman in history to break four minutes in the Women’s 400m Freestyle and Courtney Duncan wraps up the list for her fourth Women’s Motocross World Championship title win.

The five finalists for the ISPS Handa Sportsman of the Year award include golfer Ryan Fox, who claimed his fourth victory on the DP World Tour after winning the BMW PGA Championship; Aaron Gate [who has a Nana at Pakuranga Park Village] who claimed Gold in the Men’s points race at the UCI Track World Championships; and squash player Paul Coll who won the US Open. All Black and World Rugby Player of the Year Ardie Savea and Shane van Gisbergen are also finalists for their achievements over the year.

The ISPS Handa Team of the Year finalists features five teams including the All Blacks and Women’s K4 500m World Champions; the Black Fern Sevens and All Black Sevens for winning their respective HSBC Sevens World Series Titles.

Wrapping up the list is the One New Zealand Warriors, who completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in sport, coming within one win of making the 2023 National Rugby League grand final just 12 months after the worst season in their history.

The Buddle Findlay Coach of the Year category has five finalists comprising of Women’s sprint kayak coach Gordon Walker and Black Fern’s Sevens coach Cory Sweeney. Snow sports Sean Thompson and

swimming’s Lars Humer also make the list. All Blacks Coach Ian Foster rounds out the list for coaching his team to the runners-up spot at the Rugby World Cup final.

The Sky Sport Emerging Talent Award highlights five young promising athletes, including kayaker Tara Vaughan; snowboarder Lucia Georgalli who was crowned the 2023 FIS Park and Pipe World Champion and Julian David who won the Junior Male speed climbing gold medal at the IFSC World Championships in South Korea.

Footballer Milly Clegg joins the finalists for her successful year at three world championships and Erice Van Leuven who was crowned Junior Women’s Downhill Mountain Bike World Champion.

SIMON GAULT HONEY CHICKEN Elevate your dinner with Simon Gault’s Honey Chicken. A medley of flavours from honey, citrus, and spices, it’s a dish that’s as complex as it is comforting.

ROASTED PLUMS IN PARMESAN NESTS Indulge in the unique pairing of Roasted Plums in Parmesan Nests. Sweet plums meet savoury Parmesan for an unforgettable culinary experience.

> 6 Chicken Marylands > 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil > 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced > 1 large onion, diced > 2 stalks celery, diced > 5 cloves garlic, roughly chopped > 1 stalk lemongrass, roughly chopped and smashed > 8 Kaffir lime leaves

> zest from 1 lemon > zest and juice from 1 orange > handful of basil leaves > 3 bay leaves > 150 grams liquid honey > 1 tbsp turmeric > 1 tsp smoked paprika > 500 ml orange juice > 500 ml chicken stock > 1 tsp salt

Preheat your oven to 180°C. Start by trimming any excess fat from the chicken Marylands.

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Brown both sides of the chicken Marylands in batches, ensuring not to crowd the pan. Transfer the browned chicken to a roasting dish, placing them evenly spaced and skin-side up.

In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, heat the remaining olive oil over

medium heat. Add the diced carrot, onion, and garlic, and sauté (stir-fry) for 5 minutes.

Add the lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, lemon zest, basil, and bay leaves to the saucepan and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Stir in the honey, turmeric, smoked paprika, orange juice, chicken stock, and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil.

Pour the hot sauce over the chicken Marylands in the roasting dish,

ensuring that the chicken is completely submerged.

Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes.

Remove the dish from the oven and allow the chicken to cool in the roasting dish.

Once the dish reaches room temperature, carefully remove the chicken Marylands and clean away any herb or vegetable residue clinging to the chicken. (Reserve the kaffir lime leaves for garnish.)

Strain the remaining

liquid through a fine sieve into a saucepan and reduce it by two-thirds or until you achieve your desired consistency. If necessary, mix 1 tablespoon of cornflour with 1 tablespoon of water and whisk it into the sauce to thicken. Adjust the seasoning if needed.

Just before serving, return the chicken Marylands to the now-reduced sauce and heat them through.

Serve the chicken straight from the hot sauce over a warm couscous salad.

> 4 Black Doris plums > 2 tbsp runny honey > 125 grams grated parmesan cheese > handful of basil leaves, for serving Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Begin by preparing the plums. Stone and halve them, then place the plum halves on the prepared baking tray.

Drizzle the runny honey over the plums and grind a sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper on top.

Roast the plums in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes or until they are tender and slightly caramelized.

While the plums are roasting, prepare the Parmesan nests. Place a piece of baking paper on a paper plate or a microwave-safe dinner plate.

Spread a small amount of grated Parmesan cheese into a circle shape on the baking paper.

Microwave the Parmesan on full power for about 25 to 35 seconds, or until the cheese wafers are lightly browned.

Allow the Parmesan wafers to cool slightly, then gently drape them over the underside of mini muffin tins to create nest shapes.

Store the Parmesan nests in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, separating layers with wax paper to prevent sticking.

When you’re ready to serve, place a piece of the roasted plum in each Parmesan nest and top with a basil leaf.

WARM COUSCOUS SALAD Elevate your mealtime with this warm Couscous Salad. Packed with fresh veggies, feta, and olives, it’s a quick yet flavourful dish. > 2 cups chicken stock > 2 cups couscous > 1 cucumber, chopped > 150 g feta, crumbled > 2 tomatoes, diced

> 2 spring onions, sliced > ½ cup chopped flat-leaf parsley > ½ cup pitted black olives

In a saucepan, bring the chicken stock to a boil.

Add the couscous to the boiling chicken stock and stir to combine.

Remove the saucepan from the heat, cover it, and let it stand for 6 minutes.

Transfer the cooked couscous to a mixing bowl, then fluff it with a fork.

Add the remaining ingredients to the couscous in the bowl.

Season the salad with salt and pepper to taste before serving.

The Douglas DC-3 is a propeller-driven airliner manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company, which had a lasting effect on the airline industry in the 1930s to 1940s and World War II. Perhaps unique among pre-war aircraft, the DC-3 continued to fly in active commercial and military service up to 2021, 86 years after the type’s first flight in 1935.

A common saying among aviation enthusiasts and pilots is: ‘The only replacement for a DC-3 is another DC-3!’

While in National Airways service, the Air Chathams DC3 was originally named Pouwhaitere, the Maori name for a red-crowned parakeet found on Chatham Island and other remote Pacific Islands.

New, but also old, the aircraft has returned to National Airways Corporation (NAC) colours in recognition of its long and extensive history with domestic flights in New Zealand.

The aircraft flew NAC passenger services from April 1953 until the late 1960’s.

Changing colours from the green of Air Chathams, the DC3 is now radiant in red and white.

Red and white were the NAC company colours at that time with the logo featuring a stylised kūaka (godwit) because of the bird’s association with long distance flying.

The DC-3 is indeed a dream way to travel, with wide doors and aisles, large ‘skyliner’ windows, comfortable seating, and great in-flight service options available.

HOW DID AIR CHATHAMS ACQUIRE THE DC3?

The DC3 was stationed in Tonga in 2004 and under Tonga ownership for the following year. In 2006, concerned about potential damage from violent riots that had erupted, the aircraft was immediately locked away in its hangar at Fua’motu.

Full restoration and airworthiness work was undertaken with the aircraft, then re-painted in the familiar green of Chathams’ Pacific colours.
