embers of the public opposed to the sale of four east Auckland public reserves will have the chance to make their voices heard.
Auckland Council’s finance and performance committee voted in September to dispose of a swath of council-owned properties across the city. The move is part of an effort to raise $224 million from “asset recycling” as part of the
council’s emergency budget. A number of properties in the Howick Local Board area that council no longer requires are among those set to be sold. The board previously voted to support the sale of six of them, but

ASB reviewed nearly 2000 entries to select the 100 SMEs which will get a share of the bank’s New Zealand Rugby sponsorship through the ASB Borrow the All Blacks campaign. Borrow the All Blacks, featuring players from the All Blacks, Maori All Blacks and Black Ferns teams, has announced one of the first winners announced is The Cake Kitchen based in Howick. ASB has chosen to share its biggest sponsorship asset with 100 Kiwi businesses to provide practical help to business customers in need of a boost in these challenging times, the bank’s executive general manager of Business Banking, Tim Deane said. The campaign is an innovative way the bank can lend a hand beyond the financial. “ASB has already provided more than $3.3 billion dollars of principal relief, $180 million in low interest overdrafts and $2b in loan repayment deferrals to business banking customers on top of the Government scheme - but more debt is not always the right answer. “Borrow the All Blacks is our

We’re gifting them a slice of our most valuable sponsorship asset by creating a tailored advertising package for each of the 100 selected businesses featuring either the All Blacks, the Maori All Blacks or the Black Ferns.” Deane said when the campaign launched in July, entries poured in from every corner of New Zealand, from Northland to Invercargill and across to the Chatham Islands. ASB is to close 23 branches in February next year including the Howick branch. It will reduce the opening hours of another 13 branches. Media reported the bank’s branch closures come on top of the nine it did not reopen after the first Covid-19 lockdown. Craig Sims, ASB’s executive general manager retail banking, said the pandemic had accelerated a customer behaviour trend that was already well underway. Sims said there would be no job losses.

start-ups to long-standing businesses, some are proudly local family-run operations and others are exporting New Zealand’s best to the world. These companies are doing some truly incredible things but a lot have suffered due to Covid-19. It’s been inspiring to hear their stories and we’re so proud to be able to shine a light on them and give them this boost,” said Deane. The Cake Kitchen’s Amanda Watson said she entered because the All Blacks are a team that are well respected in New Zealand and are built on hard work, a great work ethic and determination. “These resonate with me and my business - so who better to represent my business?” she said. “It is amazing to have been part of the whole process and I feel so lucky to have been chosen and given such an amazing opportunity.” Watson, a huge rugby fan who recalls the days as a kid going to Mooloo parades, will stay up late to watch test matches now. She’s been into it from grass roots to top level. “Covid has been hard on the hospitality sector. My business makes cakes for parties and, with gatherings being limited, it has hit hard…a lot of cancellations and downsizing,” Watson said. “I am lucky to have very loyal customers and a great community but it still has taken a toll.”

alcolm Cowie, a teacher at Saint Kentigern College and Honorary Patron of NZ Secondary Schools Football, died suddenly of a suspected heart attack on Saturday October 24. Universally loved and respected, Cowie was recognised with an MZMN for services to football in the 2019 Honours list following a life dedicated to the sport. The secondary schools football tournament is named after him. Cowie joined the New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Football National Executive Committee in 1988 and served as chairman for 18 years. He introduced international tours to secondary schools and created the Under 19 Trans-Tasman Trophy. He has overseen the significant growth of national schools tournaments and has been instrumental in developing NZSS Football representative programmes at Under 15 and Under 19 levels. He has coached football at St Kentigern College for 30 years and co-established the West Ham Oceania Academy National Camp in New Zealand. Cowie was a selector and voluntary coach for the Auckland Football Association for many years. The NZSS said on social media, “It is with a very heavy heart and with great sadness that we inform our

football community of the recent passing of Malcolm Cowie. “Malcolm Cowie was NZSS Boys Football’s inaugural Life Member. This award was in recognition of Malcolm’s exceptional contribution of over 30 years to the provision of the best possible opportunities in football for secondary school students. Under Malcolm’s leadership and as a result of his vision, NZSS Football has achieved significant results both on and off the field.” “Our sincere condolences go to the family and his school community at Saint Kentigern College. Rest in peace Malcolm, you will be sorely missed.” Saint Kentigern College posted too. “What made him so admired
was that he truly cared about young people. He gave them his time and lots of it. He listened to them and let them know he cared about them. He took them seriously. He knew their names. He let them know how they were doing by sharing his experience with them. And when they did something well, he truly meant the praise he gave them. Malcolm will be missed by all of us. “He has contributed significantly in many areas, including physical education, Bruce Housemaster, Dean, sports, attending camps and field centres. He was a highly respected coach and manager, particularly in football, where his leadership contribution was at a national level.
GOLF
Zheng lands two golfing titles Teenager Jimmy Zheng, who plays out of Howick Golf Club, has won two provincial titles in one week. Zheng, who finished at Macleans College last year, has clinched both the Auckland Provincial Strokeplay and Auckland Provincial Matchplay Championships on his home course at Musick Point. The 18-year-old won the Auckland Provincial Strokeplay carding a nine-under 129 to win by four shots. The matchplay was a single round elimination. Zheng won 5/4 in a round of 16, 7/6 in the semis, 5/4 in the quarters and then 2/1 in the final. Zheng, who plays off a +4.0 handicap (this means he shoots 4 under par regularly), has been recognised with the award of an academic and sporting scholarship to Duke, one of the powerhouses of American Collegiate sport. He is attending Duke University virtually this semester but plans on going over next year. The recent championship wins made for a great week, Zheng told the Times. “It was great to be able to play at my home club, having a little advantage and having home-
“Ageing doesn’t go away – you have to front foot it.” A positive and energetic senior, Joyce Kraak believes you have to have a proactive approach to life as you age. That’s why she moved into an independent apartment at HBH Senior Living over five years ago. “I bumped into someone who told me about HBH’s apartments and I thought that would be perfect for me. I didn’t want to buy another house and I wanted something easy,” Joyce explains. “My children were surprised when I said I wished to move, but it was the right thing for me and I’m very happy here. I didn’t want to leave it too late – ageing is not something that goes away, so you have to front foot it! Be proactive and manage it.”
As Joyce discovered, HBH’s apartments offer the best of both worlds: the freedom to live independently, with the reassurance that help is just a call-button away. Ideally located in the heart of Howick, each spacious one or two-bedroom apartment offers a stylish, modern interior, full security and an attractive garden or balcony outlook. Apartments are surprisingly affordable compared to other options in the area, and are owned by residents by way of an Occupational Right Agreement (ORA) with a monthly management fee. Residents can select any or all of HBH’s services, such as activities, outings, meals, or help or care in their own home, plus the apartments are located close to shops, cafes, golf course and other local amenities. Filly, a must-visit, trendy, new cafe at Sylvia Park F
un, funky and friendly are the first three words that come to mind as you step into Filly, the trendy, new cafe at Sylvia Park. While the shopping mall is expanding by the minute, Filly skirts the exterior of the new extension at Sylvia Park and is close to Kmart. If you are familiar with the flash, new food court on The Terrace at Sylvia Park, Filly sits right below it facing the outdoor carpark. With Filly being another trendy offering from the stable of Roger Liu’s hospitality group WooZoo, you can rest assured that it is not only the food and drink but also the design element that is an absolute standout. The 90-seater cafe exudes designed by Mille has a contemporary aesthetic. The sundrenched indoor-outdoor flow enhanced by hanger doors, a splash of vibrant colours and chairs with funky designs, makes it a cool place to hang out at. Adding to the design element is the work of Evie Kemp, an Auckland artist with a huge Instagram following. Evie also
collaborates with Sylvia Park and you can spot her work throughout the mall. In line with all their successful cafes including Percy at Landing Business Park, Spectra in the New PwC Tower at Commercial Bay and Fields in Albany, Filly’s name originates from the history of the land it is located on. A fast trot into the past shows that Sylvia Park was once a very successful stud farm, before it developed into a much-soughtafter shopping destination that is growing by the minute. There is a bit of creative genius as you notice a specially commissioned print of Savabeel by New Zealand-born Japanese artist Claudia Kogachi. Also, colourful, artistic horse impressions on takeaway boxes along with funky lights designed like a racetrack and the starting point at the race course ...adds to the ambience that tells a story. Hardly a month old, Filly is swarming with a mix of coffee nerds, serial shoppers, millennial with laptops in tow, mums catching up with friends,

staff from neighbouring offices grabbing a quick brunch, and more importantly, foodies who can’t seem to get enough of the wellcurated, all-day menu. Whilst on the subject of food, the highly recommended Filly Cheesesteak is a sure winner, served with caramelised onion, crispy shallots, provolone and Greens on a brioche roll served with herbed garlic butter, chipotle sauce, fries and house mayo. Ricotta red velvet Hotcake with cream cheese glaze, very berry mascarpone and topped with seasonal fruits and chocolate soil is another showstopper. The freshly baked treats in the

cabinet look like technicolour dreamboats that taste as good as they look. Adding to the experience is the gracious and friendly staff at Filly— they make you want to return with your friends even before you’ve finished sipping onto your favourite Atomic Coffee. Talking of beverages, for the non-coffee drinkers, an inviting selection of Zealong Organic Tea, Iced Frappes, Housemade Smoothies, Cold Press Juice, Housemade Soda and Karma Range, to keep you well hydrated in summer. From Eggs on Toast to Filly Benedict and Halloumi Salad, there
is enough to choose from for those who prefer a staple diet of regular fish and chips too. The play area for kids that sits right beside Filly is another welcome attraction for young families with kids. Owner Roger who has successfully worked on launching 14 cafes to-date, says that the childfriendly cafe will offer ‘free meals’ for kids accompanied by parents eating out at the cafe — for the next four weeks. With fifty new shops added to the Mecca for retail therapy and dining hotspots, it’s interesting to note that Sylvia Park has now become a well-frequented foodie destination too. According to the know-alls, more and more people are heading to Sylvia Park for the popular eateries and stepping out to shop only after they’ve had their fill. Instead of it being the other way around! Definitely worth a visit, there is plenty of parking right across Filly. There is every possibility that once you’ve had a taste of Filly you may want to sprint back in that direction again.
To celebrate our opening,

An influx of rubbish dumping ILLEGAL RUBBISH DUMPING
It has been disappointing to see an influx of rubbish dumping in both urban and rural parts of Howick. Illegal rubbish dumping refers to any rubbish dumped on public property. It can be large items (e.g. a fridge or couch) or bagged rubbish. You can report this to 0800 NO DUMP (0800 663 867) A vehicle registration number and any descriptions of vehicle or offender is helpful. Auckland Council will investigate claims of illegally dumped rubbish and try to identify the offender. Offenders caught illegally dumping rubbish will be ordered to remove the rubbish and may be issued with a fine of up to $400. Serious offenders may also be prosecuted under the Litter Act 1979 with a maximum penalty of $30,000.
ECOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS During November, focus has been given to general pest plant control throughout Auckland. Locally, additional pest plant control was undertaken at Macleans Park, The Cascades, Hayley Lane and Curacao Place Esplanade Reserve.

O
ur Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Picton Street is getting set to celebrate their diamond jubilee. On December 6,1960 Archbishop James Liston blessed and opened the new ‘Our Lady Star of the Sea’ Catholic Church in Picton Street. It replaced the earlier Howick parish church which dated back to 1854 that had to be demolished in 1959. 60 years later, this significant parish milestone is cause for celebration and to mark the occasion the Howick parish are planning a week of liturgical and special events. The major heritage project to celebrate this significant anniversary will be a fundraising effort to support the restoration of the 50 aging church pews

The Parish Priest, Fr John Fitzmaurice described it as an exciting initiative which will involve the whole parish community. “The first set of pews which have been dissembled and undergone extensive restoration work have just been returned to the church. The wood now shows its’ natural beauty, it

is smooth to touch and very beautiful — something we can all be very proud of and an appropriate legacy to honour the previous clergy and loyal Howick congregations who have contributed so much to our parish community since 1848,” he said. Interestingly, one of the first pews has a brass plaque honouring the first parish priest Fr Antoine Garin SM who was in charge of the parish from 1848-1850.

Business delivers $72k scholarship H
owick-based business Southern Cross Partners has provided a substantial scholarship valued at $72,000 over four years for a graduating Howick College student to pursue full-time tertiary study at a university of their choice in 2021. Southern Cross Partners says it is a means of giving back to the local community. It was awarded at the Howick College Year 13 Honours Ceremony. Founding director Barry Milward and managing partner Cam Harper recently presented this inaugural scholarship to Jenna Hainsworth, from Howick College. Thrilled to be the first recipient of the scholarship, Jenna says, “I am so grateful to have received the Southern Cross Partners Scholarship. It has meant the world to me to be given an opportunity to live a financially stress-free student life, allowing me to fully invest in my studies. It has also provided me with the amazing opportunity of interning at the Southern Cross Partners firm to gain work experience and develop new skills. I am so excited for the future ahead.” Jenna has been a peer support leader, a house leader and captain of the 1st XI Girls Hockey team. She has also demonstrated high

academic achievement, receiving several top-in-subject awards and excellence endorsements in NCEA. This year, she was also one of the only three recipients for the Howick College Award, the most prestigious award in the school. Jenna will pursue her conjoint degree in a Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of International Hospitality Management at AUT University and hopes to start her own event management company. The scholarship will also include work placement during Jenna’s final year towards the completion of her conjoint degrees. In addition, Southern Cross Partners also offered a one-off contribution of $5000 to each of the other two shortlisted candidates Chris Camm and Bruno Danev to support their
tertiary studies and by making available mentorship opportunities. Milward says, “Julia and I feel the time is right to give something back to our local community and what better way than to help the future generation by means of educational support in the form of this scholarship. Howick College and Southern Cross Partners share similar values and they’re a local school whose students we want to help achieve success. “Our goal is to help a young person with real potential chase their dreams without starting off in financial strife. We’re looking forward to helping Jenna come out of her studies with no student debt and some applicable industry experience for a head-start in the real world.”
Zonta awards go to young women who inspire Most service organisations are relieved that they can start meeting up again and host events. One such women’s service organisation Zonta recently hosted an awards ceremony to recognise women of substance in our community Year 12 students Hannah Giles from Macleans College and Apurva Anand from Howick College were presented with The Female Empowerment Award for leadership and inspiration to others. These awardees are recommended by the schools. Miyuku Muraki from Sancta Maria College was the recipient of the prestigious Young Woman in Public Affairs Award, recognising her commitment and
work on volunteering to make a difference to girls, ‘a significant achievement especially in this Covid year’. The Founders’ Day Award, a special acknowledgement of service in the community, went to Tess Gould Thorpe for her services and commitment to the organisation Grandparents Raising grandchildren – Zonta District 16 (NZ) has chosen this organisation to support in their fundraising over the next biennium. A final award, Service Appreciation, awarded to a current / past Zontian for services to Zonta, was presented to Jenny Phillipson, a member for almost 30 years, and newly-appointed as New Zealand District Treasurer.

ROOSTER IS A NO-NO
There is a rooster residing in the area bounded by Maugham Dr, Priestley Dr and Colum Pl. It has a favourite tree from which to crow in Maugham Dr but the occupants firmly deny owning it and vigorously pointed across the road. It has been here for around three months and I feel a great deal of sympathy for the near neighbours. I can hear it clearly and I live about 400m away as the crow flies! It crows on random occasions from around midnight but most frequently from around 4.30am onwards until sometimes 7.30am. This morning it crowed several times at 3.57am so at around 6am today I dislodged it from its favourite tree. It fluttered down, shaking its glossy black feathers, squawking indignantly as it ran across the road and into the backyard from where it continued its crowing. Auckland Council have informed me that they cannot do anything until the owner of the rooster has been identified. If you know the identity of the owner then please inform the Council. Auckland Council allows up to six chickens to be kept in an appropriate structure but specifically bans roosters in the urban area. If this rooster is yours then please be a good neighbour and get rid of it. If it isn’t yours then don’t feed it and try to catch it. If you catch it then notify the Council on 301 0101.

BY GEORGE, DON’T MAKE ME LAUGH When Ian George reaches the Pearly Gates, I hope Yahweh, God of the Old Testament, knows what to do with him. Do they have stand-up comedians in the afterlife? Can you split your sides laughing when you’re dead? Laugh your head off? Wet your pants? Please Mr George (‘Trump has done so much’, Times, November 3), no more jokes about the goodness of the pig-ignorant, erratic, deranged, depraved, destructive, divisive, narcissistic, nasty, vindictive, despicable and habitual cheat and manipulative liar Trump. That this repugnant creature nearly won re-election is a sad reflection on Americians and all humanity.

NASTY DEVELOPMENT PROPOSED IN HALF MOON BAY As a long term ratepayer to Auckland Council, (I) have been absolutely disgusted with the council even contemplating such an inappropriate development at 28-30 Venus Place which would overwhelm the street’s infrastructure and character. The arrogance displayed by council staff who should have the best interests of ratepayers at heart demonstrates such an uncaring attitude as defies belief let alone the wider factors such as traffic volume, road safety and parking in this tiny, narrow street.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR KIDS ARE DOING? My hubby and I, both in our late 50s, walked to Howick Countdown Friday November 6, 2pm. At the back carpark entrance opposite the police station, there were some youths kicking the signs on the wall. I told them to quit that, to which we were heralded with expletives, and called a ‘Karen’. On entering the store, a policeman was already there taking what looked like a statement from the lady on the service counter. I spoke to the shop assistant about the incident we encountered at their car park and she told me these kids had just been in the store and had done the same thing to the staff. On leaving the store, these kids were still outside and we had more of the same abuse. On speaking to the police, they said they moved the kids on but I said not very well because they are still there. I have never encountered these kids before and I believe them not to be from this area. The usual kids who loiter at the back car park eat pizza, drink coke and play on their skateboards and really are no bother. But the policeman said their parents live in this area and the store would need to put a trespassing order on them as there is nothing he can do because they are under 18. Should we not demand our kids behave themselves? What are the parents doing? What can the government do?

BUCKLANDS BEACH HIDDEN ASSET In the cause of fair play for all now that two of the Americas Cup courses are directly off Eastern Beach, surely Auckland Council - pressured by the Howick Local Board must top the trees along the three hundred metre walking track above Rogers Avenue behind Eastern Beach. [It] would open up the vista of what must be one of the most spectacular views on the whole of the east coast of the North Island. With views to the bottom of Waiheke and beyond, across to the entire Colville range encompassing Great Barrier and Little Barrier Island, Tiri Tiri Island, Rangitoto, Browns Island, The Noises, Mototapu and Motohuie as well as Eastern Beach. The 300 metre track and its exit to the Macleans reserve would accommodate well over a 1000 Americas Cup enthusiasts with binoculars and be an enormous asset to residents of the Bucklands Beach and Howick region. Musick Point offers a similar vantage point but, unless you are a member of the Howick Golf Club, has its limitations. The dozen residents owning clifftop homes above the track and are spoiled rotten because of the billion dollar view will undoubtedly complain but they should remember this is a one-off event. Once it is over, the trees could be allowed to grow back. For a test of whether the Howick Local Board and Auckland Council have even the vestige of interest of fair play for all Aucklanders - not just the super-rich topping the said trees would be a clear indicator of just that.

TAKE A BOW TIMES (II)
In response to Deane Smart (‘Take a Bow Times’, Nov 10) I have to agree, we have a unique Fourth Estate platform in the Times. They publish opposing world views while remaining neutral. I remember the leader of the opposition some months ago congratulating the Times for its Feedback page while dismissing the major Auckland newspaper as delivering biased propaganda. This charge I have found to be so. Thank you Times team. Keep up the good journalism and editorial work.

To complete their nearly three week-long itinerary, they move on to Stratford-Upon-Avon for historical Setting Shakespeare’s Scene – including tours and performances there. DeSouza says it’s a dream come true. “I have always known I want-
ed to perform since the first movie I was shown as a child and this opportunity is a step in the right direction for me to make it as my career. I love being able to transform people and submerge them within performing allowing them to forget about their daily lives/worries. I am so grateful to my school Botany Downs Secondary College for offering the opportunity of Sheilah Winn Regional which has led me to this very point.”

Fanstone says, “I remember being pretty dumbstruck when I got the call for NSSP so you can imagine how excited I was when I got the call for YSC. I have never seen myself as being any better at acting than my peers, and that still hasn’t changed. However, I have certainly come to realise how lucky we all are to have such amazing opportunities as these and how important it is to grab at these opportunities whenever they come your way.”
Shincheonji Church of Jesus hosts International Online Prayer Event for the COVID-19 Global Pandemic
Giving you the choice!
Three hundred and fifty two Religious leaders from 29 different religions joined 200,000 people from 73 countries around the globe in an event to pray for the end of COVID-19, ahead of Shincheonji’s group plasma donation from 4000 recovered members. Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, hosted “the 3rd Global Prayer Service of Religious People” on November 15th. People from across the globe participated, including NZ, Australia, America, South Africa, and South Korea. The online prayer event was for the COVID19 global pandemic and the government, medical personnel, patients, families of the deceased, plus citizens across the globe. Transcending denominations and religion, the event saw over 352 religious leaders from 29 different religions attend. Any person of faith with a willing heart was able participate, which saw many unite in heart for the eradication of COVID-19. The prayer event was broadcast live on Shincheonji Church of Jesus’ official YouTube channel at 3pm that day. Shincheonji is the same organisation that has been helping health authorities in South Korea through their group plasma donation by 4,000 of its members who fully recovered from COVID-19. Chairman Lee Man-hee suggested the prayer event prior to the plasma donation, and to pray for quick and effective vaccine developments and for the global pandemic to end. Chairman Lee Man-hee proposed the online prayer event by saying, “Too many people are suffering because of COVID-19, especially with

those who were infected in church last February that caused distress to the members and the citizens. We should actively put in our effort and pray to God for the country, the people, and for the pandemic to end. I urge every person of faith around the world to also gather their hearts and pray so the whole world can come out of the suffering caused by this plague.” Chairman Lee also emphasized, “Even as the church shutdown orders are lifted, the church should not conduct services or meetings with many participants to prevent the members from contracting COVID-19. We must disinfect and care for the members’ health by preparing non-contact thermometers and other necessities.” In every service starting late February when COVID-19 began to spread, Shincheonji Church of Jesus has been setting aside a prayer time to pray for the pandemic to end and for the health and safety of the government health officials, medical staff, and patients. Note: Please be advised without misunderstanding that every Shincheonji Church in Korea has been conducting services online remotely since February 18th.

POLO
NZ’s top polo tournament ready to play The first big competitive polo tournament on the global polo calendar for 2021is coming to Clevedon in February. Recognised as the nation’s most prestigious and competitive polo event, the BMW NZ Polo Open will be held at the Auckland Polo Club, Clevedon on Sunday February 21. Next year will mark the 44th year for the renowned NZ Polo Open that is cemented as a summer highlight on New Zealand’s sporting and social calendar. Despite this year with Covid-19 and the current border restrictions, event director Lucy Ainsley is confident the event will be one of the best yet. “The teams for 2021 will be predominantly Kiwi polo players and, with more teams entered, the competition will be tough which will make it great for spectators,” says Ainsley. “We are proud to have BMW as our official partner and fantastic returning sponsors with some exciting new ones on board too. We are doing everything our end to make it an exceptional day out, one that after all the lockdowns we all need.” The popular Fashion on the Field will return, as well as the Veuve Clicquot and Rodd & Gunn Dashes, and the George FM Afterparty on the Club Setter Lawn. Ahead of the Parade of Champions, the famous Horsepower Race between a BMW and one of the polo horses will once again entertain the crowd. ➤ Turn to page 19
OPINION
All Blacks were inept
I
nept. That was the first thing to spring to my mind after the All Blacks were flogged 25-15 by a magnificent Argentina display in their historic rugby test win at Parramatta on Saturday night. What made it more amazing for a team enjoying their first win against New Zealand despite not having played a test match for 13 months was that they dominated almost all phases of the game. Physically stronger up front and much quicker to pounce on the loose ball, their rush defence negated an All Blacks attack bereft of ideas. Just as Hugo Porta did in the 21-all draw in 1985, Nicolas Sanchez scored all 25 of the Pumas points and had the rare distinction of outplaying Richie Mo’ounga thanks to the dominance of his forwards. Leading the charge up front was dynamic captain and flanker Pablo Matera who hoped the victory would lift the spirits of his countrymen who have suffered 1.3 million cases of Covid-19 and more than 35,000 deaths. Although it was a miraculous win by Argentina fully deserving of wholesome praise, the All Blacks’ performance was pitiful from a team thought by many to be New Zealand’s best. If so, the future looks bleak.
But should it be after the high standard set in Super Rugby Aotearoa when forwards supplied fast ball and backs ran with flair and creativity to score tries? However the rush defence wasn’t as powerful or effective as that of the Pumas. As shown in last year’s World Cup semi-final loss against England, the forwards lack the physicality to dominate against the better teams. Joe Moody is a good loosehead prop but promising Tyrel Lomax, playing at tighthead in place of the suspended Ofa Tu’ungafasi, is not yet a good enough scrummager. Captain Sam Cane tried hard but failed to get the backing of his leadership team. Second-five Jack Goodhue tackled manfully but lacks the kind of penetration Ma’a Nonu brought to the team for so long. Coming off the reserves bench late, Rieko Ioane and Damian McKenzie added speed and some sparkle although Ioane blew a try when he dropped the ball with Caleb Clarke unmarked outside him. Fellow reserve Hoskins Sotutu also looked sharp when given his chance. With Dane Cole and Shannon Frizell guilty of indiscipline and giving
Agnew’s Angle away penalties, the inability of the forwards to gel was disappointing. And it was a shame Akira Ioane was not named to face the Pumas after playing well and receiving so little time in his first test start against Australia. Meanwhile, having lost two on the trot and with a 40 per cent win record having won two of five matches with one drawn, head coach Ian Foster is under fire from critics. There have been some outstanding coaches in the not-so-distant past, Graham Henry, Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith in particular. It surprised many that the amiable Foster got the job ahead of Scott Robertson who has an invincible record with Canterbury and the Crusaders and who offered himself as Warren Gatland’s assistant for the Lions tour of South Africa. Foster has another year left on his contract. But if Robertson isn’t offered a carrot by donkeys who have ignored his credentials, other nations are likely to make an offer he can’t refuse. Polo is a dynamic sport that requires strategic innovative thinking, superb performance, and precision by the players. “It is also aesthetically beautiful to watch. These qualities align perfectly with our BMW brand. Our involvement in the 2021 event will combine luxury and entertainment, making for an amazing day for polo players and spectators alike.” Like all global sports and the athletes that accompany them, Covid-19 has had a big impact on the international polo tournaments and community. polo player Kit Brooks (and a member of the current titleholding Mystery Creek team for the last four years) has been unable to travel offshore to play this year. Consequently, his focus has been on training young polo ponies for the upcoming seasons, and New Zealand polo ponies have long held a great reputation for being some of the best in the world. “I am looking forward to playing again in the BMW NZ Polo Open,” says Brooks. “Not only will it be the first big competitive polo tournament on the global polo calendar for 2021, it’s also a chance for people to come and enjoy the great atmosphere and everything what polo has to offer.” Ainsley adds, “With the calibre of New Zealand polo players taking to the field this year and with all the sideline action, the BMW NZ Polo Open is set to be fantastic homegrown affair – a thrilling one to watch, and a wonderful social day out.”

Any disposal of these properties is subject to the reserve revocation process under the act being completed.
“This process includes public notification of the proposal to revoke the reserve status of the land and sell the property. “If any objections are received, these are forwarded to an independent hearings commissioner and potentially a hearing.” The council will publicise its intention to revoke the reserve status of the four parks with information about how anyone who objects to their sale can do so. Final revocation of the reserve status requires Department of Conservation approval and signoff from Conservation Minister Kiri Allan.

➤ From page 1 A report prepared for the finance and performance committee describes the four east Auckland reserves as “undeveloped open space” and states engagement with local mana whenua with regard to their sale is underway. Council acting chief group financial officer Kevin Ramsay says the council is making savings in the way it operates and has taken a “hard look” at what assets are working for residents. He says councillors and local boards will continue to be consulted and kept informed around this process. Some decisions are still to be made, but for properties the council has expressed an intention to sell, it will prepare them, look at valuations and timings, and ensure it gets the best return for the people of Auckland, Ramsay says. “As part of our stewardship of public funds and resources, the properties will not be sold for less than 90 per cent of the valuation, without approval of the finance and performance committee. “Most of the sites [which are] surplus to council requirements are sold contestably through an open market process, where the property is advertised, usually through an appointed agent, so anyone with an interest in that property is aware it is for sale

Foundation to fund young elite athletes A
new foundation aimed at young sports men and women will inject major funding into the area’s elite athletes. The Fencible Foundation hosted an inaugural breakfast at Daisy Chang in Howick last Tuesday. The Foundation (which is a charitable trust) was set up to support the sporting youth of the Howick Local Board area. The meeting of local business identities was used to start to spread the word that the trust is up and running and ready to help fund the elite sporting youth of the area as they transition from college into either tertiary education or the trades. The financial support comes with the expectation that they shall continue to play their sport within the local area. Foundation chair Graeme Heaphy welcomed all to the breakfast and then trustee John East gave an update on what the foundation is and why and how it was set up. The Foundation (which was originally an idea set up from the Pakuranga United

Rugby Club) has a goal to raise $500,000 which is to be invested so that interest and dividends provide for up to five scholarships per year to be awarded for up to three years of support. The Foundation is well on the way to achieving this goal with almost two thirds
already raised. Heaphy is supported by four other trustees – Greg Kasper, Mike Anderson, Stephen Hackett and John East – who have been involved with the foundation from day one. As part of the Foundation fundraising activities, they host an annual golf day at Howick Golf Club in March and work

Macleans College student Ruth Xu was first in the senior category at the Figure Skating National Championships. Ruth was the highest scoring female in the competition held recently in Dunedin The Year 11 student from Upham House also won the Junior Ladies category in 2019 at the same event. Last year, Ruth represented New Zealand at a Junior Grand Prix in Courchevel, France. This year she was due to compete in a Junior Grand Prix in Yokohama, Japan but this was cancelled due to Covid-19. Ruth, who started skating four years ago, says that for some, that would be considered late. “From a young age, my parents have taught me that anything I truly set my mind to is achievable and I never stopped believing in that,” she says. “Next year, if international competitions are resumed, I hope to qualify for Junior Worlds and realise my dream.”

FOOTBALL
Brighter than ever at BBAFC F
ootball in east Auckland at Bucklands Beach Association Football Club is looking brighter than ever. With a Covid-hit season, BBAFC has continued to train where possible and many teams have taken part in tournaments in Auckland and around the country. One of the highlights was the Labour Weekend National U19 football tournament in Napier for both male and female teams. Having won the men’s satellite competition last year, the team – coached by Rudy Mozr – was keen to take on the best clubs at this age group throughout NZ. They found themselves in a very competitive pool and, after day one, had three draws for their efforts, a nil-all draw against Havelock North, 2-all draw against competition favourites Birkenhead, and a 2-all draw against Miramar Rangers, one of the best out of Wellington. Day two saw them win 3-1 over Cashmere Tech from Christchurch and the final group game was another 1-all draw with Waterside Karori. This had BBAFC men finish second in the group and qualify for the quarter finals.

Above, left, BBAFC Men’s U19 National Tournament Team 2020; right, BBAFC Women’s U19 National Tournament Team 2020.
Late that day they went down 2-1 to Western Springs, beaten by two penalties. A good effort from the team with many of these developing players looking to play reserve and first team football at BBAFC next season. Great to see their development and competing with the best in NZ. Having come women’s runners up in the Plate competition at first time of asking last season, the women were keen to show the development of the female game at BBAFC. Coached by Charlie Hunn, they played exceptionally well over the two days of round robin games
with four wins and one loss. They beat Otumoetai 3-0, Kapiti Coach 9-2, Taradale 3-0 and finally 6-0 over Upper Hutt. The only game they lost in pool play was 3-2 against Hamilton Wanderers, who had won the tournament the previous two years. They made their way to the main draw semi-final and came up against the highly favoured Ellerslie team. With an outstanding performance they won that game 3-0 which saw them make it the Grand Final to play Hamilton Wanderers. Hamilton were too good on the day and won the final whilst fielding 8
national league players, congratulations goes to them. The BBAFC womens team was made up of players aged 14-18 years old, so again plenty of years ahead of this group to continue their development into first team womens football next season and beyond. Special mention goes to Milly Clegg who scored 14 goals in 6 games, Milly was included the women’s team of the tournament and recently named in the New Zealand U17 national training team. Two guest players also played their part within the team, thanks to Samara Dullabh and Macey

Fraser and the rest of the successful BBAFC contingent. Overall a very positive tournament for both teams, with many young players being given their opportunity, the future is brighter than ever at BBAFC. The male and female summer elite academies are presently taking place, these will finish in early December. A few weeks off and BBAFC will be back into pre-season training in early 2021. ➤ Please see our latest updates on www.bbafc.org.nz, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter | Paul Makenzie and Martin Bolton BABFC
