No arrests in body-in-car case By CHRIS HARROWELL

olice are yet to arrest and charge the person or people responsible for the violent death of east Auckland woman Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong, seven weeks after her killing. The 55-year-old’s body was found inside her vehicle on November 28 last year. Her black Land Rover vehicle had been parked in Roadley Avenue, Sunnyhills, a short distance from

her three-storey home in Suzetta Place. The last confirmed sighting of the businesswoman was at about 4.30pm on November 27. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown is publicly calling for people with knowledge of what happened to Zhong to do the right thing and speak to police. “The death of Elizabeth Zhong was incredibly shocking and sad for the entire Sunnyhills and Pakuranga community,” he says.

“If anyone has any information regarding Elizabeth Zhong, please approach the police and provide them with that information to support them in their ongoing investigations.” The Times addressed a number of questions relating to Zhong’s death and the resulting homicide investigation, named ‘Operation Attina’, to Counties Manukau Police. They included whether or not police are working to identify if her killer had fled New Zealand and

also if a post mortem carried out on her body had established her cause of death. Some media organisations have previously reported Zhong was stabbed to death. That detail has not been confirmed by police, however, as they remain tight-lipped over many aspects of the investigation. It has been confirmed though that Zhong was subject to a violent attack before her death. Counties Manukau Police detec-

olice are working to identify the people who robbed an east Auckland store at gunpoint. Counties Manukau Police detective senior sergeant Veronica McPherson says an investigation is under way into an aggravated robbery at a jewellery store at Botany Town Centre on January 10. “Two male offenders entered the store after 2pm, one armed with a shotgun,” she says. “A quantity of jewellery has been taken. These offenders fled the shopping centre on a moped shortly afterward. “This moped was later located in the nearby East Tamaki area and is being examined.” McPherson says a scene examination was carried out at the store and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. “Anyone who has information that may assist our enquiries and has not spoken with police is asked to come forward.” People with information on the alleged robbery can phone police on 261 1300 and quote the file number 210110/5931, or phone the free and anonymous

Burglaries down due to Covid lockdowns By CHRIS HARROWELL

E

ast Auckland has seen a major reduction in a particular type of crime and the reason why may be surprising. Counties Manukau East Police area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller, says she’s seen a drop in burglaries locally since the Covid-19 lockdowns were first enacted early last year. “Between April 1 and October 31 [2020], in that seven-month period, there’s been a more than 50 per cent reduction in burglaries in Counties Manukau East compared to the same time period the previous year,” she told the Times. “Stolen vehicles and thefts from vehicles are down about 50 per cent over the same period as well. “Covid has been a challenge for everybody but there have been some positive things from it. That’s what we want to highlight and build on.” A crime doesn’t need to entail an offender breaking into and stealing an item from a residential or commercial property to be recorded as a burglary, Spiller says. “Burglary is also people breaking into a vehicle parked on someone’s driveway. “It’s taking clothes off a

clothesline, out of sheds, off front porches, or if shoes are left on the front door and someone takes them, that’s a burglary,” Spiller says. “A pot plant stolen from someone’s garden is a burglary.” Spiller says the Covid lockdowns resulted in more people working from home, which increased the community spirit or “connectedness” in the area. That led to higher levels of vigilance among local residents and safer neighbourhoods, she says. “That’s because people are aware of who lives in their street now. “With that comes more what we call ‘capable guardians’, which is where people know

their neighbours, know the vehicle their neighbour drives, know who lives next door and who comes and goes, so unknown people and vehicles are more obvious. “People can utilise the 105 phone service, [for non-emergencies] which people got to know during Covid. “They can phone that number to report suspicious people, vehicles, and behaviour.” Spiller encourages locals to continue to keep an eye out for suspicious people and vehicles even though the Covid lockdowns have ended. She says it’s harder for burglars to stake out a house when its occupants are spending more time at home.

“Additionally, with more people at home it adds to that capable guardian and community responsibility. “We’ve got Neighbourhood Support groups that work together to prevent offending. “If people are retired or work from home and they’re around that gives them the opportunity to be capable guardians and that has increased because of Covid.” Spiller says the community connectedness seen during the Covid period can and should be maintained. “We’ve proven we can do it. My challenge to the community is why does it take a lockdown to keep ourselves safe? We should be able to do that anytime.” She encourages residents to be “kind and connected” and report suspicious behaviour to 105, or 111 if a crime is in progress. “Keep that connectivity in terms of reporting because people don’t know if it might link to an offence that happens later. “That report might be the missing piece of a puzzle we can put together at a later date. “People should talk to their neighbours, become part of a Crime Watch or Neighbourhood Support group and take responsibility for the safety of their own street.”

➤ From page 1 Following Zhong’s death, police publicly appealed for sightings of Zhong’s Land Rover in the days leading up to her killing. Investigators conducted an area canvas and spoke to her family, friends and associates. Members of a specialist police forensics team wearing white hazmat-style suits were seen working in what appeared to be her property’s kitchen as an armed officer stood guard in the driveway. Police have described Zhong’s family as being “devastated” by her death. She was the director of the company Digital Post Limited, which is based in Epsom, central Auckland. ➤ People with information on the death of Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong can phone police on 261-1300 and quote the file number 201128/1909, or phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.

OPEN 7AM – 11PM, EVERYDAY

From 19th December, we’ll be closing our overnight services. For urgent medical care after 11pm, call Healthline, or Emergency Services on 111.

East Care’s overnight service is closing on Saturday, December 19th. Our new hours will be 7am-11pm every day, including weekends and all public holidays. It is with enormous regret that we’re having to close this important overnight service, after 24 years of serving the community 24/7. However, long term underfunding and a subsequent lack of clinical resources has meant we can no longer safely service the substantial overnight need. We know how significant this change will be to our community who have heavily utilised the service, and who also appreciate how hard our staff have worked to care for them. Our new hours will reduce clinical risk and relieve the extra pressures and demands that our overnight service has required of our health professionals. Whilst our hours will be changing, our long term commitment remains focused on providing the highest quality urgent care and support which our patients in east and south Auckland deserve.

POLICE

Officer policing his own community By CHRIS HARROWELL

“We want people to trust us so they come to us and they know we will help them,” Baker says. “Community cops are there to build relationships with groups in the community. “We’re reliant on the consent of the public to do our jobs effectively and we need residents to keep their eyes and ears open for suspicious activity.” With the summer season well under way, Baker says his advice to local residents is to be vigilant, remove all valuables from their vehicles, even when parked in their driveway, and keep an eye on others. “Covid brought people together,” he says. “We hope they’ll continue to look out for their neighbours and check on them. “If it looks ‘off’ it probably is. If a crime is happening now, people should phone 111, and if it’s already happened, phone 105. “If they want to remain anonymous, they can phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

S

ergeant Scott Baker is in no doubt he has big shoes to fill. Baker recently took over from sergeant Brett Meale as the community services supervisor in charge of the Howick police station in Fencible Drive. He leads a team of six officers, including the community constables for Howick, Pakuranga, Botany, and Highland Park, in his new role. Meale held the position for a number of years but has been transferred to another role. Baker says his predecessor did an “awesome job here over the past five or six years”. “I’m hoping to continue and build on that work and I feel like I have big shoes to fill. “The relationships Brett built with stakeholders such as the local business association and others was very solid. “That’s something I noticed immediately, the respect he had here.

Sergeant Scott Baker is the new community services supervisor in charge of the Howick police station. Times photo Wayne Martin

“Being a local boy, as Brett also is, I’m passionate about this community. “I love Howick and I love working in this station.” Baker attended Howick College and has lived his whole life in east Auckland. He grew up in a house close to Howick Beach. His most recent previous role was as the supervisor in charge of the Otara neighbourhood policing team in south Auckland for three years. He’s worked in the Counties

Manukau East Police area for more than a decade. Baker says his new position in Howick has both similarities and differences to the role he previously performed on the neighbourhood policing team. “I really enjoyed the job in Otara. This is not a huge transition but it’s something I’m excited about.” He says his primary focus is to foster partnerships with the local community, which is something Meale had done very well.

New home is a big life-changer

Getting mortgageready has helped the Moala family achieve their dream of buying a brand-new home. Former Pakuranga residents Boaz and Angela Moala, along with their two children Cayden (7) and Caylee (5), moved into their new three-bedroom home in Glen Innes recently as part of Tamaki Regeneration’s (TRC) affordable housing programme. “Now we don’t have any fears that someone is going to knock on our door and tell us they’re going to sell the house, which was the worry when we were renting,” Boaz says. “The security means it brings some stability for us and our children.” The Moala whanau are part of the TRC shared ownership programme, where families take at least a 70 per cent share in the home, while TRC takes up to a 30 per cent share, which is paid back over time. People who have strong links to suburbs in TRC’s boundaries (Panmure, Point England and Glen Innes) may be eligible for the affordable housing programme.

he Burn Support Charitable Trust is this year bringing Annual Children’s Burn Camp back to Auckland. It is to be held at Willow Park Christian Camp at Eastern Beach starting on January 22 for five days of workshops, activities, confidence building and fun for 36 burn survivor children. The yearly event – known as Camp Awhi – provides a secure environment to nurture and raise the selfesteem of young burn survivors, promoting a positive attitude while encouraging a healthy independence, said Michele Henry, the charity’s events co-ordinator/office administrator. “Children sustaining burn injuries come from throughout New Zealand for this unique camp which ensures a wonderful experience which is invariably the highlight of the year for many of them,” Henry said. “Camp Awhi is a five-day camp for children aged 7 -17 years. “It is an opportunity to

make genuine connections with others, re-discover the fun in physical fitness, learn their own strengths and find their own voices. “Along with a whole lot of fun, the children engage in confidence-building workshops, build life-long relationships, inspire and encourage each other with tremendous support.”

The Burn Support Group (BSG) is a non-profit organisation that provides the camp at no cost to those attending. “None of this is possible without the incredible and generous support of the local organisations and general public who donate, provide services and give their time to this terrific event,” said Henry.

Next-level amenities define Pohutukawa Landing

ADVERTORIAL KC15021A

Metlifecare’s new retirement village on the Pohutukawa Coast is under construction, offering an unmatched living environment. Pohutukawa Landing is a showcase for Metlifecare’s vision of high-quality, design-led retirement village living. Designed by Peddlethorp Aiken Limited, from a masterplan and concept design by Warren & Mahoney Architects, this spacious and predominantly low-rise development celebrates the region’s natural richness and abundance. Lower-density building with wide streets and attractive planting are suggestive of this theme of abundance, including an impressive central boulevard lined by pohutukawa trees. This backdrop is complemented

by a wide range of amenities that define this stylish, contemporary take on retirement living. Raised garden beds across the site let residents grow their own produce and flowers to pick and enjoy. Groves of olive, lemon and orange trees give another nod to the region’s fruitful horticultural past. A sunny garden pavilion in the central Village Green provides a place to meet, chat and share food while enjoying the outdoor space and views. The buildings and architectural design reinforce the theme of abundance and space.

At the heart of the village is a contemporary club house building. Inside, there’s a fully-equipped wellness centre with gym, pool, spa, salon and activities room. A modern open-plan bar and café spills out onto the sunny terrace: perfect for sharing good times with friends, neighbours and family. Other highlights include a library, snug lounge and billiards room. State-of-the-art medical facilities also feature, offering 36 care beds. Architecturally, the look is coastal and contemporary with a feeling that’s casual and close to nature. Research among locals prior to the

design stage influenced not just the building design but the overall development plan, which doesn’t look or feel like a typical retirement village. Pedestrian-friendly and simple to navigate, the layout makes moving around and interacting with people an easy, natural affair. With its coastal walking track and welcoming ambience, Pohutukawa Landing is very much part of its local community in Beachlands. Pine Harbour marina, with ferries to the CBD, is just a few minutes’ walk away. Tours are now available of the first homes which are under construction and nearing completion. These two

and three-bed terraced homes are generously proportioned, all featuring large, sunny outdoor living areas and start from just $895,000. Understandably, demand is high with 26 homes already sold or under offer. Spacious apartments will also be available in later stages. To find out more about the exceptional living on offer at Pohutukawa Landing visit the Sales Centre on Ninth View Avenue (the Jack Lanchlan Drive end) or contact Metlifecare’s Jo Ashby on 021 786 574, or email joa@metlifecare.co.nz. www.pohutukawalanding.co.nz

OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CATHOLIC CHURCH 60TH ANNIVERSARY On Sunday December 6, 2020, Bishop Michael Gielen (Auxiliary Bishop of Auckland) came to celebrate the 9.30am Sunday Mass to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Blessing and Opening of the current Church by Bishop James Michael Liston on December 11, 1960. The previous church had stood on the same spot since 1854 and was dismantled in 1959 to make way for the current Church. Many parishioners and friends attended the celebration Mass and afterwards Bishop Gielen led everyone through the cemetery to bless the graves there and concluded with the blessing of our new outdoor stone Grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

That was also an opportunity to thank Stone Creations of Onehunga who created the beautiful grotto. Then everyone gathered in the Parish Centre for refreshments to celebrate.

Firstly, there is the cost (of electric vehicles) beginning at $69,000 currently (only those on a politician’s wage or above will be able to afford them). Secondly, there is their depreciation rate – almost twice that of a petrol vehicle in the fourth and fifth year when battery levels and power output reduce to 80 per cent. Who’s going to buy them then? Thirdly, New Zealand is woefully short of charging stations. Fourthly, what business or holiday traveller is going to wait eight hours for the vehicle to be charged? Fifthly, with regards to greenhouse gases, on the world scene, factories making them pump twice as much

MANNERS MAKETH SOCIETY For a society to let one event, no matter how repugnant (the Mosque murders), to so influence opinions that by new policy we surrender our freedoms is further harm.

The policy changes and subsequent proposed legislation I refer to are “hate speech laws”. A lack of care, by those promoting such legislation, seems to exist about how such legislations fray and intrude on societal norms. These norms include manners. Just before 1920, the great Justice, Lord Moulton, wrote about “enforcing the unenforceable” and how the law should not intrude on the realm of “manners”. That there are some areas that legislation should not legislate. Lord Moulton was concerned about the State trying to mandate and then enforce “manners”. He noted that “what lies between Law and Free Choice we lose at our peril”. Pushing through a crowd is illmannered but not an “assault” and could be dealt with appropriately. Something said or done that is objectionable but lawful, could be ignored or rebutted – not used as an excuse to punitively punish. There are simply too many construed grounds for action and therefore exceptionally good public policy reasons not to legislate ‘manners’; for example, the evidence is that hate speech laws do not get applied equally. NZ doesn’t need this constructed societal rub, these new laws. NZ will benefit from more tolerance and the discussion of contentious topics or behaviours, whether from the left, right or centre.

DEVELOPMENT

Names chosen for new public roads in Flat Bush By CHRIS HARROWELL

A

greement has finally been reached on the names assigned to three new public roads being built in east Auckland. The Howick Local Board was initially asked to choose names for the roads, located in a subdivision being developed in Murphys Road, Flat Bush, at its November business meeting. The developer provided the board with its preferred name options, being Pigeonwood Place, Shortfin Place, and Wynnestead Drive. It also offered multiple potential alternatives, including Pararahi Drive, Omihi Way, and Pihi Avenue. A report provided to the board for its November meeting stated mana whenua were consulted on the new road names in accordance with Auckland Council guidelines. Multiple mana whenua groups were contacted by the council on behalf of the applicant, it said. “Te Ahiwaru Waiohua deferred to Ngai Tai ki Tamaki, who in turn did not respond. “No other iwi provided responses or comments or suggested any

other road name options.” As part of that consultation, the board received a letter from Zaelene Maxwell-Butler of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki. Her letter said Ngai Tai ki Tamaki wished to provide names for the roads. It opposed the names proposed by the developer as they have no “historical, cultural or ancestral linkage to the area”. “We categorically oppose the Maori names given [as options].” Maxwell-Butler wrote that the

names preferred by Ngai Tai ki Tamaki for the first road were Te Ara Tatai Whetu, Hoeroa Road or Tuahangata Road. Its preferred options for the second road were Te Ara Pou Waho, Te Ara Pou Roto or Te Ara Kaiwhitiki. Its preferred option for the third road was Henry Maxwell Way. The board was unable to reach a consensus on the names at its November business meeting and deferred the item to its meeting next month. At its meeting on December 3,

board chairwoman Adele White said the potential road names before them were Pigeonwood Place, Omihi Way, and Henry Maxwell Place. Board member David Collings moved an amendment that the name Omihi Way be replaced with Shortfin Place, as per the developer’s wishes. He said information the board had received from its consenting staff “indicated the developer was okay with the alternative name for road three but was quite firm or

would rather see the first options for roads one and two”. “I think developers go through a lot of work to develop these things. “I think it’s a bit of a concession to agree to an alternative for road three which was outside what they applied for.” Board deputy chairman John Spiller said he wanted to give more weight to the fact Ngai Tai ki Tamaki had responded to a request for feedback on the proposed names. “There’s a number of road namings in here where they didn’t respond because it wasn’t of such significance to them. “So that’s why I think we should stick with Omihi [Way] on this one.” White said she agreed with Spiller. “I think we have a blend of names here. “We’ve chosen the one te reo name and two others, so I won’t support the amendment.” The board passed Collings’ amendment to replace the name Omihi Way with Shortfin Place. It went on to vote to assign the names Pigeonwood Place, Shortfin Place and Henry Maxwell Way to the three new public roads.

Times, Tuesday, January 19, 2021 — 15

t has been an amazing summer of test cricket for one-time minnows New Zealand who now find themselves ranked No 1 in the world, having thrashed West Indies and Pakistan. It was no surprise masterly skipper Kane Williamson would continue his majestic form with the bat taking his total to 7115 from 83 matches with a highest score 251 and a remarkable 54.31 average. But who would have believed relative newcomer Kyle Jamieson would take his wicket tally to 36 from six matches with a best of 6/48 and an astonishing wicket average of 13.27 runs? Our greatest bowler Sir Richard Hadlee had 431 wickets from 86 tests with his 9/52 against Australia his best tally. There was nothing wrong with his average of 22.29 runs for each wicket taken. But that pales against Jamieson’s 13.27. Spinner Daniel Vettori took 361 wickets from 112 test at a 34.15 average and a

best of 7/87. The next best are three current players with Tim Southee 302 from 77 tests at a 28.70 average, Trent Boult 281 from 71 tests at 28.02 and Neil Wagner 219 from 51 at 26.32. Other than Jamieson, the only other bowler to have a better run average per wicket than Hadlee was speedster Shane Bond who took 87 from 18 tests at 22.09. When one adds injured speedster Lockie Ferguson and Colin de Grandholmme to the current test incumbents, it’s abundantly clear New Zealand has never had such seam and swing bowling depth. They utilise it best on greenish home wickets but struggle on spin-friendly sub-continent pitches on which India reign supreme. Much is owed to the consistency of Southee and Bolt over a long period and the stamina, tenacity and bounce of Wagner who played courageously when bowling one test against Pakistan with two broken

Agnew’s Angle toes. But 6ft 8in Jamieson, with his steep bounce and ability to swing the ball both ways, adds another dimension that should trouble even Australia, India and England. Australia still has the world’s best bowlers but New Zealand is closing the gap and, under Williamson’s leadership, the batting isn’t too bad either. Williamson’s 54.31 average puts him head and shoulders above other luminaries JF Reid 46.28, Ross Taylor 45.83, Martin Crowe 45.36. Mark Richardson 44.77 and Glenn Turner 44.66. Henry Nicholls 43.91, Tom Latham 44.24 and Jesse Ryder 40.93 complete the top 10 ahead of the great late Bert Sutcliffe who played only 42 test at an average of 40.10 with a 230 not out best score. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

Medal haul for local athletes P

akuranga Athletic Club has racked up an impressive medal haul at the 2021 North Island Colgate Games at Inglewood. The club had 61 athletes competing amongst the 7-14 years age grades. The club won 33 individual medals (15 gold, 8 silver, 10 bronze) and 7 relay medals (5 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). The best performing athlete was James Trathen (14B) who won 5 medals (4 gold, 1 silver) and was awarded 1 of 4 Nick Willis Scholarships at the end of the meeting. Tim Wallace (13B) also won 5 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). Harrison Day (11B), Ben Ward (14B) and Kaiden Warren (14B) all won 4 medals each. Imogen Barlow (12G) was the best performing female athlete with 3 gold medals. There were 5 new Auckland records set. We have 19 athletes competing at the South Island Games here in Nelson this weekend. More than 1000 young athletes made their mark in Taranaki over the weekend of January 8-10 at the 43rd annual Colgate Games. This year, 79 clubs from across New Zealand took teams to the

The annual Colgate Games is New Zealand’s largest athletics competition for young athletes aged 7 to 14 years old. Each year, a different city or town is chosen to host the Colgate Games in the North and South Islands. Established in 1978, the Colgate Games is one of the longest continuous sports sponsorships in New Zealand. Colgate NZ General Manager, John Garside, says the Colgate Games are about celebrating community sport and encouraging upand-coming athletes to do their best and to give new sports a go. Colgate and Athletics New Zealand have provided eight scholarships worth $500 each for athletes who display outstanding performances. The eight scholarships – four awarded each in the North and South Islands – are named after Colgate Games alumnus and twotime Olympic medallist, Nick Willis. The funds will go towards helping the winning athletes achieve their sporting goals. The South Island Colgate Games were held in Nelson’s Saxton Field Sports Centre from January 15-17.
