POLICE TARGET DIRT-BIKE JOYRIDERS By CHRIS HARROWELL

P

olice have charged more than 130 people and impounded almost 100 dirt bikes and vehicles following an operation targeting illegal street racing activity in areas including east Auckland. The year-long ‘Operation Whakatika’ was launched at the start of 2021 to investigate reported offending in the Counties Manukau Police district by dirt bike riders and illegal street racers. Police worked to follow up reports of dirt bike and street racing offending, investigate complaints and obtain evidence to identify and locate suspects with the aim of “prosecuting or fining and impounding their vehicles and bikes”. As a result of that work, 59 dirt bikes and 39 vehicles have been impounded, with 88 people arrested and charged over illegal dirt bike activity. An additional 44 arrests or charges have resulted in connection to illegal street racing activity for offences such as dangerous driving and sustained loss of traction. More than 160 infringement notices have been issued for dirt bike activity and 579 infringements were issued for

illegal street racing. Almost 2500 vehicles were stopped and inspected over the year as part of the operation. Counties Manukau Police district prevention manager, Inspector Jared Pirret, says the officers involved have done an “outstanding job of identifying and taking follow-up action against offending riders and drivers. “We know our community gets frustrated at the dangerous and often brazen antics by dirt bike riders and street racers,” he says. “Often when police are notified at the time to these types of reports, we are not in a position to immediately intervene as it creates significant safety risks for those involved as well as other innocent road users. “While we may not be able to take immediate action at the time for safety reasons, we want to reassure the community we take this offending seriously, and we have a team working hard to identify and locate offenders and impound their bikes or vehicles.” Police also recovered 25 stolen vehicles as a result of enquiries, while three riders had their licences suspended and 53 people were forbidden from riding. ➤ Turn to page 5

man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm following a man’s death in east Auckland on Boxing Day last year. The incident at a property in Bezar Place began at about 1.15am on December 26 when police received a 111 emergency call from a local resident who could hear a person in distress at a nearby home, followed by the sound of gunshots. Counties Manukau Police criminal investigations manager, detective inspector Fa’amanuia Va’aelua, said police including armed offender squad (AOS) members, were dispatched to the area. Cordons were put in place to ensure no further risk to residents and people in neighbouring homes were advised to stay indoors. “Police approached the property on foot and could see several people inside

at the property when the Times visited the scene the day of the incident. A large black motorcycle was parked at the entrance of the driveway. An upstairs window at the two-storey property, through which several of its occupants had escaped, was wide open. Numerous armed police officers remained in the area throughout the day while a scene examination was carried out. Va’aelua said police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter. Police wanted to acknowledge the distress the incident caused for people in Flat Bush, he said. “This is not something you expect in a residential area after a day of Christmas celebrations. “I also want to acknowledge the bravery demonstrated by the officers who went into the home and brought the occupants out safely.”

Dirt bike riders targeted by police

POLITICS

Luxon expresses support for Tonga

➤ From page 1 The Times reported last year when six men were arrested after allegedly taking part in a disruptive large group dirt bike ride through east Auckland. Ten dirt bikes were seized or impounded and numerous infringement notices were issued following the incident on April 3. Three arrests were made for operating a vehicle in a dangerous manner. Two were for failing to stop and dangerous driving offences, while one of the people arrested was a disqualified driver. The Times observed the group of dirt bike riders travel down Harris Road in East Tamaki at about 12.40pm and turn left into Ti Rakau Drive heading toward Pakuranga. Many of the riders were not wearing helmets, as required by law. One rider was observed performing a wheelie, riding solely on the bike’s rear wheel, for about 30 seconds along Ti Rakau Drive. Another rider placed both of his feet on the dirt bike’s seat and then stood up before performing a long wheelie. Police said at the time the men involved in the group ride “showed a complete disregard for other motorists and placed themselves and others at risk”

otany MP and National Party leader Christopher Luxon is expressing concern for the people of Tonga following the recent volcanic eruption and tsunami. The undersea volcano named Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai erupted on January 15, triggering a tsunami that saw large waves wash onto the island nation. Luxon says the Opposition shares concerns for the Tongan people and supports New Zealand standing ready to provide assistance to that country. “Our thoughts are with the people of Tonga as they deal with the damage and distress brought about by the recent tsunami that followed a volcanic eruption. “I know there will be many people around New Zealand waiting to hear about their family, friends and loved ones while communication remains unstable, and our thoughts are with them too.” Luxon says the National Party’s spokesperson for Pacific Peoples, Dr Shane Reti, has reached out to local Pacific leaders, the Tongan Consul, and Pacific Peoples Minister Aupito William Sio on behalf of the Opposition to express their sympathies and

offer their support. “We welcome the Government’s commitment today to providing humanitarian assistance,” Luxon said on Sunday. “I hope the Government is poised and prepared to deliver this assistance as quickly as possible including, if appropriate, dispatching the [Royal NZ Navy’s] multi-purpose Aotearoa vessel if planes are not able to safely fly over the volcanic ash cloud. “We must help our Pacific friends and family in any way

that we can.” Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta said on Sunday damage assessments are under way and New Zealand has formally offered to provide assistance to Tonga. The New Zealand Government has made an initial $500,000 available to respond to requests from the Tongan Government as they come in, she says. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the NZ Defence Force, and other New

Zealand agencies are working through air and sea options to provide assistance to Tonga. Mahuta says an NZDF P3 Orion aircraft is on standby to provide aerial surveillance and support the Tongan Government to gain visibility of the impact on the outer islands, as soon as atmospheric conditions allow. “The New Zealand High Commission in [the Tongan capital] Nuku’alofa is monitoring the situation closely and is in contact with local authorities.”

‘Millions wasted on rail yards’

HIGHLANDS

N

ew Zealanders are fast getting used to Michael Wood’s profligate spending, with $85 million to revive rail workshops in Dunedin just the latest instalment, National’s Transport spokesperson Simeon Brown says. “Transport officials advised against Minister Wood’s extravagant $85 million wagon assembly yard in December, saying that the wagons could simply be imported at a much cheaper cost,” says Brown, the MP for Pakuranga.

HOSPITAL CHARGES DON’T MAKE SENSE In reply to Randel Case (Vax Times, discrimination, December 21), if the unvaccinated are to face hospital charges, then so should the obese with health problems brought about by their obesity, those with type 2 diabetes caused by poor dietary choices, drunk drivers, sports injuries etc. We all pay taxes and for whatever reason should expect medical treatment whatever our choices in life. That’s the way it works. Oh, and by the way, it’s not the non-vaxxed that are causing mutations – Randel can do his own research on this.

Officials estimate that assembling the wagons in New Zealand would cost approximately 30 per cent more than importing them. “Minister Wood is very experienced at finding ways to waste taxpayers’ dollars on transport projects that don’t stack up. Unfortunately, he lacks the ability to deliver projects which actually improve the lives of New Zealanders as they try to move around,” says Brown. “He found $785m to waste on a cycle bridge across the Auckland Harbour, which subsequently got scrapped

Transport of goods and people already accounts for one third of the Earth’s greenhouse gases. Cars will cease to be a problem when they become EVs. Heavy transport, such as trucks, ships and airlines should quickly follow. If London’s hydrogenfuelled buses are anything, trucks could soon be hydrogen-fuelled.

Electric motors in trucks are currently in operation but are disadvantaged by the time taken to charge batteries. Hydrogenfuelled trucks don’t have that disadvantage. There is already a hydrogen-fuelled ferry operating in Santa Monica which would indicate the same technology could equally apply to cruise and container ships. Airbus has three hydrogen-fuelled concept planes to be in operation by 2035. Hydrogen fuel has three times the energy output of current aviation fuel. One, on a smaller scale, has already been successfully trialled. Forest fires are running rampant and an estimated 50,000 animals, if we include insects, are currently being made extinct by such events. If politicians are serious about climate change on the scale of change needed, the urgency – in most cases – that is being applied to vaccinating the world’s population, to hydrogen power, and birth control to reduce the earth’s population, would give the coming generation, at the very least, a window of hope for their very survival and catastrophic climate events some semblance of returning to normal.

THIS ISN’T FAIRY LAND MR LUXON!

Reference: Merry Christmas and season’s greetings MP for Botany Christopher Luxon (Times, Tuesday, December 21, 2021). After moaning for 12 months about the Government’s decisions,

MP Christopher Luxon has wished us all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2022. Prosperous 2022 – what a wonderful sound to hear! But to whom? He was against an increase in the hourly rate to low-income workers. He complained about “Our wages aren’t keeping up” regarding the middleincome group. Business people need to pay their staff better, which of course will reduce their profit. This Government has taken tough measures to balance the economy and safety. We can travel throughout the country again without too much fear. Instead of sitting on the fence, Mr Luxon could have asked his unvaccinated voters to get vaccinated. Finally, he promises a lolly scramble. We do not live in a children’s fairy land Mr Luxon.

WHAT’S WITH ALL THESE CASES AT THE BORDER?

Why are we getting all these Covid cases at the border? Are all the passengers not getting tested before they board the plane, or they passing it around during the flight? Surely if the correct precautions were taken before travel commenced we should be Covid-free? It only takes one person to escape or hand it on to the staff and the whole country is at risk, and at enormous cost to our economy. Pretty slack to say the least.

BUSINESS

GMT to develop North Shore facility for NZ Post Goodman Property Trust (GMT), New Zealand’s leading warehouse and logistics space provider and owner of Highbrook Business Park, has acquired a 3.2-hectare infill site in Albany and secured a development agreement with NZ Post. CEO John Dakin said the growing digital economy driven by changing consumer behaviour continues to see acceleration of e-commerce and a rapid increase in parcel volumes across Auckland. “As a result, we are extending our relationship with NZ Post as it continues to develop its future delivery network for Auckland,” Dakin said. The new 17,992 sqm parcel processing centre, to be developed on Bush Road in Albany, follows another design-build project underway for the customer at GMT’s Roma Road estate in Mt Roskill. “NZ Post has committed to a 20-year lease over the new facility. Like the Roma Road project, it will be a highly sustainable, carbon neutral, Green Star rated development,” Dakin said. The property is close to large consumer catchments in the north and west of the city, with easy access to the new motorway

interchange that will link SH1 with SH18. “It’s an ideal location for fulfilment and delivery service providers like NZ Post,” he said. The new project adds to the record level of development activity for GMT, with more than $440 million of work in progress. The expected completion date is June 2024 with construction to commence in 2023 following the expiry of existing leases. In a separate transaction, GMT has acquired the Oji Fibre Solutions facility at 35 Hugo Johnston Drive in Penrose for $60.5m. The pulp and paper supplier has a long-term lease over the 17,843 sqm facility. Adjoining the Gate Industry Park (an existing GMT property), the expanded estate will have a combined site area of 21.2ha. The Bush Road and Hugo Johnston Drive purchases are both expected to settle next month. “Both these acquisitions are consistent with our strategy of investing in well-located, urban logistics space,” Dakin said. “With committed gearing of just 25.8 per cent and new debt facilities providing additional liquidity, GMT remains well-placed to take advantage of new investment and development opportunities.”

COMMUNITY

Waterpark closure causes angry outcry By ZOE GARDEN

T

he closing of a popular water park at Maraetai Beach after an alleged assault and vandalism has caused an outcry of community anger and calls for more police presence. Maraetai Waterworld Water Park made a splash in the community over the summer as thousands of kids and adults enjoyed the various obstacles and activities on the inflatable course. On Christmas Day, staff at Maraetai Beach were threatened with knives, media outlets reported. The vessel was significantly damaged. A second attack occurred at another of the water park’s three sites, Red Beach. Several anchor chains on the compound were cut. Equipment was reported stolen. Around $80,000 was lost in staff time, revenue and repairs, Stuff reported. On January 12, a lifeguard was “bashed” by a group of offenders on his way home after they recognised him as the employee that told them to get off the park. They further threatened him by saying they would be “coming back to the park”, owner Kel Travers told Stuff. “He was thankfully ok,” Travers said.

About 50 people broke into the park the following morning. The two security guards on duty could only watch helplessly, Travers said. Finally, after the various incidents, the park closed. The community outcry on social media has been significant. Hundreds of comments were left, labelling the actions of the offenders as “disgusting”, “shameful”, and “unacceptable”. Many were calling for more police presence and involvement. Beachlands Constable Jack Hibbs told the Times that, on December 20, police commenced Operation Beaches in anticipation of the busy summer period. “Police have not seen an increase in criminal behaviour such as anti-

social and dishonesty offending,” Hibbs says. “What have increased are the calls for service for by-law breaches such as overnight camping, noise and barking.” “Police are working with council in regard to an increase in calls for (those) who have legislative powers to remove campers, seize loud stereos and move on illegal parking.” Since the opening of Maraetai Waterworld on December 19, there have been two calls for service to police. “On both occasions, staff were dispatched but stood down by the respective informants as the situations were under control and police presence was no longer needed.” There have been no reports to police of lifeguards being assaulted or any other criminal activity requiring further investigation, Hibbs says. “Teams who have been working on the beaches over the summer have reported positive interactions with the event owner, the security personnel and members of the public. “We remain committed to the approach outlined at the start of the summer operation and encourage anyone to contact police on 111 in an emergency or 105 for non-emergency.”

A wealth of legal experience The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan has seen many a Howick resident pass through its doors, as with any rite of passage. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving

Pakuranga athletes shine brightly at 44th Colgate Games P

akuranga Athletic Club junior athletes performed with distinction at the recent North Island Colgate Games in Wellington. In its 44th year, the North Island Colgate Games hosted more than 1100 junior athletes from 78 different athletics clubs around New Zealand (Colgate’s sponsorship of the Games is believed to be the longest continuous sports sponsorship in the world). Pakuranga athletes in the 10-14 age group won an outstanding 20

individual medals, including three to 10-year-old Unaisi Cava (gold in 100m and 200m, and silver in long jump). Pakuranga was particularly strong in the racewalk events, its athletes winning five of the 10 gold medals on offer. And in the relays, Pakuranga picked up medals in both the 4x100m and mixed medley events, including gold to the 10 Girls team of Skye Wilson, Unaisi Cava, Tia Korewha and Giselle Campbell, whose time of 58.29 seconds broke the Auckland Resident record.

The 10 7-9 year olds in the team won a massive 27 1st, 2nd or 3rd place pennants between them, including five gold pennants to seven-year-old Alyssia Vaili. Fifteen Pakuranga athletes will be travelling on to attend the South Island Colgate Games in Invercargill. Club nights for all junior athletes (2-14 year olds) commence for 2022 today at the Yvette Williams Track at Lloyd Elsmore Park. New members are very welcome.

Quay Gallery is a long-established name in the New Zealand art industry and has represented Kiwi artists for more than 15 years. Based originally in Ahuriri Quay in Napier before moving to Hastings Street, the gallery has an incredible history in offering New Zealand artists a place from which to present and promote their art. In 2020, Quay Gallery owners thought it time to retire, the lease on the Napier Gallery was up and there were things to move on with. It was at this time that Howick locals Nicki and Grant Richards decided to fulfil a dream of one day owning an art gallery. Quay Gallery presented the ideal opportunity and on January 27, 2022, just over a year later, Quay Gallery will open its doors at their new location, 7A Whitford Wharf Road, Whitford Village. “We are so excited to be opening Quay Gallery in Whitford. We have lived in this area for many years and this community is a big part of our lives. “We will continue to bring art to the people through inhome presentations and art
