LABOUR KILLS GANGS BILL By CHRIS HARROWELL

T

he Government has voted down a bill sponsored by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown that would have banned taxpayers’ money being given to gangs. Brown’s Public Finance (Prohibition on Providing Public Funds to Gangs) Amendment Bill had its first reading in the

Parliament on April 6. It would have prevented public funds from ending up in the hands of gangs through entities run by or associated with gangs being able to legitimately access money through the Proceeds of Crime Fund. The law does not currently prohibit an organisation run or administered by, or associated with, a gang from receiving public

funds from the Government or its agencies. Controversy over public money being given to gangs arose in mid2021 when it was revealed a North Island chapter of the Mongrel Mob received $2.75 million from the Proceeds of Crime Fund to run a methamphetamine rehabilitation programme. The move was slammed by the National and ACT parties as well

as the NZ Police Association. The first reading of Brown’s bill continued in the Parliament on April 13, where several Labour Government MPs spoke against it. Labour MP Kieran McAnulty said the debate is not about whether gangs are good or bad. “Everyone is recognising that gangs do behaviour and cause harm in our communities, and nobody supports that.

Photo Wayne Martin

“We recognise there are many people, over various generations, for decades in this country, have suffered under the behaviour of gangs. The question is how do we stop that?” McAnulty said in the absence of context or information, funding the Mongrel Mob meth rehabilitation programme “seemed a bit unusual”. ➤ Story continues on page 4.

Oliphant told the Times that the experience was great for teambonding and team-work, problemsolving skills and confidence for the students. “It was also good for them to learn that sometimes you don’t get it right and to just re-think and to be resilient and to not worry,” Oliphant says. “Sometimes when you’re learning new things, it is really hard but then you’re finding new learning pathways in your brain. We’re going to keep learning when we’re older and part of our school motto is about creating life-long learners. “It was such a fun experience for the kids.”

Gribble was forced to choose a size that was as large as his studio could accommodate which was 2400mm x 1200mm and scaled it to 7.6m x 2.5m. Once the scaled-up copy was completed, Gribble had it turned into sticky back labels strips and squeegeed them onto the site. He deliberately painted some of the colours brighter than he needed to allow for fading but, he said, the vinyl performance has been outstanding. Now that the scaled-down copy has done its job, it’s going to be auctioned off to the Cancer Society and it is felt that a lot of businesses in the area would love to have it in their reception area. There are many homes that have a wall that is 2400m x 1200m and could accommodate a now famous landmark painting. The painting has been painted and sealed on a ridged MDF support, so it doesn’t need further support or frame. ➤ If you would like to talk with the artise, his website is Rongribble.com

It’s the stuff of novels, we have the artist Ron Gribble, and his mate of 68 years Ray Houghton have come together on behalf of Ray and Diane’s daughter who has cancer. Ray Houghton was the professional Golfer at The Grange, Whitford Park Country Club and Pakuranga Golf Club. Ron Gribble is the well-known artist who painted the murals at each end of Howick featuring figures, painted by Gribble, looking at paintings of old Howick scenes, and it has been in place at Rosscourt, on the corner of Fencible Drive and Cook St. Two of the figures depicted were the artist’s daughters. Time and graffiti has taken its toll and the mural is past its prime. But the mural at Stockade Hill, although damaged by boy racers over time, depicts looking down Cook Street circa 1910. It was painted by Gribble from a black and white photo that features on the cover of the well-known book “Grey’s Folly” by Howick Historian Alan La Roche.

owick Primary students’ problem-solving skills were put to the test in a new animated television show. On the first of July last year, a group of 18 Howick Primary kids, ranging from seven to nine years of age, enthusiastically participated in a new locally-made TV series, entitled “Riddle Me This” where they used their powers of critical thinking and imagination to solve intriguing mystery riddles. The students’ voices were recorded at the school as they asked questions, created hypotheses and discovered solutions to the riddles through creative thinking. Their voices were then overlaid with vivid and grand animations. “They were so excited to have a go at this interesting new show,” Kristen Oliphant, associate principal at Howick Primary, says. The five-minute episodes, Oliphant says, have just gone to air recently. “We heard one of them last week,” she says. “The kids came into school and they were like, ‘I heard my voice on there. I helped solve the riddle.’”

FUNDRAISING

Ukrainians kick-start campaign By ZOE GARDEN

T

wo Ukrainian-born New Zealanders are organising a campaign to raise donations and supplies for the civilians and children in their home country. Dr Elena Artyukh, a Howick dentist for 22 years, and Valeriy Boyko, who has lived in east Auckland for 25 years and works in logistics, are joining the global campaign to take action after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Valeriy, the father of sports medicine registrar Andriy Boyko who is conducting similar campaigning efforts from his home in Australia (Times, April 5), says they couldn’t sit back and do nothing while Russia continued its brutal campaign in Ukraine. “We cannot sit by and watch how our country is being torn apart and how innocent children and civilians are suffering.” Elena and Valeriy started their campaign a week ago.

They set up a Givealittle page, approached businesses and contacts, and ran a fundraising campaign on Picton Street over the weekend, spreading awareness and raising donations for their cause. Their next campaign in Howick will be on April 23, opposite the former ASB on Picton Street, from 9.30am-12.30pm and on April 30 in Albany. All funds received will be used exclusively to purchase medical

supplies and equipment locally such as Immediate First Aid Kits (IFAK), tourniquets, trauma bandages, shell dressings and humanitarian goods. The supplies and goods will be air freighted to Europe and collected by their Ukrainian contacts either in Poland or other destinations depending on the situation on the ground. Transportation of medical aid to Ukraine will be arranged by the National Medical Clinical Centre of Ukraine and other volunteer

organisations. None will be used, they say, for purchasing military equipment. “We are in constant contact with Ukranian hospitals and local volunteer organisations who keep us informed of their needs.” Elena told the Times that the campaign is also a dedication for their late mothers. Elena’s mother was a paediatrician and Valeriy’s an oncologist. “We thought that if they were alive, they would be trying to help.”

CHARITY

Winter appeal for blankets Winter is on its way and the unfortunate truth is that many families in the community will not have enough blankets to keep their kids warm on winter nights. To assist the plight of these families, Howick Rotary will commence the collection of blankets and quilts for its Blankets 4 Kids 4 Winter Appeal on May 1 and it will run for the month of May. This year it is being supported by the Howick Village Association who have added their organisational skills, resources and network to provide additional momentum to this year’s appeal. This follows the successful Rotary effort last year when more than 350 blankets were distributed to families in need through Stand Children Services and All Saints Anglican Church. Jane Newbury, Howick Village Association town centre manager, said “The association is thrilled to add its support to a wonderful community project.” Both Stand and All Saints were extremely grateful for the blankets they received last year. Pene Frost, regional manager for Stand, said she “was amazed at last year’s results adding that many grandparents have become care givers in today’s world and they were ill-equipped to provide winter warmth so the blankets we were able to provide from the appeal were a godsend”. This year Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church has been added to the charities to get a greater reach to families in need. The collection points this year will be the Howick Information Centre, Howick Village Optometrist – both in Picton Street – and Grasslands in Moore Street.

Many schools and community groups are also expected to join in again and special collections can be arranged for these groups as needed through the Rotary contact. Last year 40 hand woven and teddy bears largely from the “knitting in public” groups in Howick and Botany were donated to the Littlemore charity for the Middlemore Infant Birth Department. Madeleine East, President of Howick Rotary, said, “Following the strong support from the local community last year, the club believes that this very worthwhile project should be held every year before the onset of winter. We have even developed a special kid’s logo for the project to increase public recognition. Hopefully there will be an even greater community response this year”. ➤ For more information contact Bill Charkow 021 66302 or Rob Mouncey 021 413341. Want to know more about the appeal or Rotary? Government votes down gangfunding ban bill ➤ Story continued from page 1.

Classic car pop-ups a hit

Classic car lovers are in for a treat for the remainder of the year.

W

ith the cancellation of the popular annual Brit & Euro Classic Car Show due to Covid and lockdown uncertainties, enthusiasts can still get a little taste of many classics at fortnightly pop-up events in Howick all year as part of the 175th anniversary of Howick and districts. Howick 175 chair, Rev Dr Richard Waugh said, “The first pop-up classic car display [on Saturday, April

9] was a huge success with great weather and large numbers of the public streaming onto Fencible Walk Park to view up close the classic cars.” Steve Broadbent, from the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show committee, who is organising the classic car display on the second Saturday of each month, is very enthusiastic about the event and it continuing for all of 2022.

“The Pop-Up display event is a good way to celebrate our transport heritage in this special 175th year of Howick and district’s beginnings,” said Waugh. “We look forward to the monthly displays and if any east Auckland owners of British and European classic cars are interested in displaying their vehicles, they are welcome to contact Steve (021 656024).”

“However, when I ... was informed this was a programme based on one the previous National Government implemented in conjunction with the Salvation Army, focused on gangs, that was effective, that worked, I thought, actually, this makes sense. “Because here we have an opportunity to support a programme that clearly, or one might think, has bipartisan support, is based on a programme that worked, that targets those that are in gangs, that has proven results.” Speaking in reply, Brown said the principle of the bill is about saying taxpayers’ money should not be going toward funding gangs. “What we’ve seen under this Government is an absolute explosion in gang numbers, a 40 per cent increase in gang membership, and New Zealanders see every single day the impact of that increased gang membership on their daily lives. “We see the crime which is getting committed on our streets, the drug dealing which

A bill sponsored by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown would have banned public money being given to gangs. Photo supplied

is taking place, the firearm offences which keep increasing, the drive-by shootings.” Brown said the Government knew deep down that providing funding to the gang was the wrong decision. “They know it wasn’t what New Zealanders wanted, and they know public money shouldn’t be going to gangs. “But they’ve bought into the narrative that they want to work with gangs, despite the fact they know the harm they are causing in our community, and New Zealanders will not forget what they are doing.” The bill was then voted on. It received 43 votes in favour from the National and ACT parties, but 77 votes opposed by the Labour, Green, and Maori parties, and was defeated.

Award-winning over 40s fitness studio finally opened their exclusive group classes to the public JH17408A

They are known as the over 40’s #1 choice for getting back into shape, losing excess kilos, feeling better, boosting energy levels and regaining lost confidence. Over 5 years they have already helped 585 grownups do what they thought was impossible… turn their health (...and life) around. And now they offer you their group exercise classes specifically designed with people over 40 in mind. Have you been wanting to get stronger, healthier, lose excess weight? Perhaps you wanted to get fitter so you can keep up with your kids or grandkids? Problem is most fitness facilities cater for the younger, fitter demographic. A typical 50 something year old person who might be a little out of shape feels totally out of place in a typical gym setting.

“I feel out of place in a typical gym environment”

“Out of place” might be an understatement. “Intimidated” is often more accurate. On top of being surrounded by fit-looking 20-year old gym bunnies you are expected to keep up with a much younger crowd which is… well, unrealistic and often dangerous.

Cara (left) has lost 33 kilos and says “I couldn’t have done it without Growing Younger and the very kind and supportive community there.” Above, the ladies at Growing Younger are having a blast at one of the group classes So what is the solution? The good news is that the Growing Younger Group Classes are purposefully designed for the grown-ups over 40. You will not be expected to do a hundred press-ups while being eye-balled by a hulk-looking trainer in an armystyle training environment. You will not feel inferior because you are not able to do a certain exercise. Remember, you are training in a friendly atmosphere with like-minded individuals. The Growing Younger approach is unique because the 2 founders Alex Blazhevskyiy and Gavyn Berntsen have gone

through tonnes of medical and scientific research. Over the last 5 years they managed to create a system for getting results for people over 40 in a predictable way.

Proof that it works

Many, many Growing Younger members got stronger, fitter, regained the lost pride and confidence. For those people who wanted to lose weight, the average weight-loss has been 19kg per person… and they kept it off for good. To top it all off the Growing Younger facility received a prestigious Innovation Award at the New Zealand Fitness Awards in November 2020.

That just confirms their unique status. In fact, they are the only ones doing what they do in this country. Previously the group classes were only available for the Growing Younger members. However, they’ve just opened them up to anyone over 40 who wants to start getting results and have fun along the way.

How it works

Once you enroll for the Growing Younger Group Classes you will have access to all the exercise classes you need to boost your fitness, energy levels and get stronger. There is a range of classes to choose from: Zumba,

Pilates, Yoga, Circuit and Kettlebell classes. You can pick and choose or you can do them all if you want. The classes are run from the Howick RSA, 25 Wellington Street. The Growing Younger environment is 100% secure and supportive. All you need to do is to plug yourself into the welltested system and watch the results materialise. Entering your golden years should all be about enjoying a well deserved break, spending quality time with your family, kids and grandkids and of course travel. And perhaps even setting an example for your loved ones. You should not be limited by aches and pains and frequent health scares. You also want to be guided by the experts who specialise in helping people over 40. So if you want to make a positive change to your health and fitness book in for a complimentary Group Class Discovery 30-minute consultation with one of the Growing Younger team to see if the Growing Younger Group Exercise Classes are right for you. They will also help to guide you which classes will be most helpful in achieving your specific health goals.

Please keep in mind that their current facility has a capacity of a maximum of 150 members. They currently have 117. So there is space for only 33 more. Once they are full, new members will not be accepted until one of the current members leaves the programme. Only until the 8th of May when you take out an unlimited 6-month Group Class membership you will also get a FREE complimentary personalised nutrition plan, “The Nutrition Blueprint” video-course and access to our monthly online nutrition classes (total value of $370 absolutely FREE). “It’s never too late to start,” Dylan explains. “We have older students making great progress as they have the time and the determination to succeed and at the opposite end of the spectrum, we love helping younger students with their playing.” “The good news is that it’s not rocket science - yes, there are challenges on the way, and not everyone is going to be the next Jimi Hendrix, but with the right teaching (as opposed to online or YouTube!), I firmly believe that anyone can develop the

skills to play guitar well.” With its friendly, supportive atmosphere, first-rate teachers and an unparalleled range of opportunities for students to apply what they’re learning, Auckland Guitar School is able to provide a unique experience for Howick guitarists from its Uxbridge Road teaching studio. ➤ Visit the school’s website www.aucklandguitarschool. co.nz, or call 533 5246 to book a free intro session and find out how to transform your guitar playing!

Whether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve been playing for a while and just don’t know how to take your playing to the next level, the school’s unique approach makes it simple and fun to learn.

SPECIALISTS ADVERTORIAL

The plastic surgeon who gets results Experienced plastic surgeon Amber Moazzam takes pride in his downto-earth approach and ability to make his patients feel comfortable and listened to. He brings 26 years’ experience to his practice, based in professional and modern premises with ample parking at east Auckland’s Half Moon Bay Marina. Amber specialises in reconstructive, burns, skin cancer, and hand surgery and has worked as a specialist consultant for almost two decades. He also performs cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, correcting ear deformities, and breast enlargements and reductions. “I also do breast reconstruction for women who have had a mastectomy,” Amber says. “If it’s a procedure that would be done under local anaesthetic or simple sedation, we have a very well-equipped theatre in our rooms here at the Marina and we’re able to do the surgery here. “The theatre is staffed by nurses who are trained and very experi-

the National Burns Centre.” Amber’s skills were called on to help treat people who suffered serious burns injuries in the eruption of Whakaari White Island in 2019. Among the most common procedures he performs are to treat skin cancers such as melanoma. His patients are primarily referred by their GPs, but people can also phone or email his practice at the Marina to book a consultation. “I’m happy to consult and give them advice,” he says. “There’s no pressure to have a procedure carried out and we don’t make them feel rushed. “We always try to make sure the client feels comfortable and has confidence they’re dealing with professional people who have expertise and experience.” Patients who arrive at Amber’s clinic will be greeted warmly at reception before he takes them through to the room for the appointment. “We listen to them about what their issues are and what they’re

enced in plastic surgery.” Amber performs surgeries that require general anaesthesia at Ormiston Hospital. People who want to make an appointment to see him can usually do so within a couple of weeks, so they won’t be waiting long, for both the consultation and surgery. His practice is accredited by health insurance company Southern Cross and he handles ACC cases. Amber underwent specialist training in plastic surgery in the UK, worked as a surgeon in Northern Ireland, and ran a prominent burns centre in the UK for two years as a consultant. “We heard a lot about how New Zealand is a great place for families so we came here about 16 years ago to check it out,” he explains. “We moved here and I started working at Middlemore Hospital as a consultant when it was establishing a burns centre. It’s the largest plastic surgery unit in New Zealand. “I perform reconstructive and hand surgery in the plastic surgery department and burns surgery with

looking for,” he says. “We have a discussion until they’re happy and have answered all their questions. “If there are any issues later, they can contact the clinic and talk to us. The channels are always open.” If Amber feels a patient’s medical needs are better met by another specialist, he’s happy to make a referral. “I’ve done that before and if someone wants a second opinion as well that’s fine. “One of the reasons why I came into this field, plastic surgery, is there’s a reconstructive element to it. “When we see the patient’s post-operation appearance, and the issue or problem has been corrected, that gives us an immense feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.” First Floor, Compass Building, Ara Tai Drive, Half Moon Bay Marina. nzac Day is a time to reflect on the servicemen and servicewomen, past and present, who have displayed courage and self-sacrifice serving our country. The number of in-person services and ceremonies across the region is reduced as a result of the red-light setting when planning was undertaken. Popular services at Waikumete and Browns Bay have been cancelled for this year, while the dawn service at the Auckland War Memorial Museum is not open to the

public. There are still many ways for all Aucklanders to honour the military veterans they know, by commemorating at home or in the community. Check below for details of any parades and services across the region, as well as online events to commemorate Anzac Day on Monday April 25, 2022.

Crime on the rise across NZ R

done to keep our streets safe. The local police who serve our area do a fantastic job but it is becoming clear that they lack the numbers, resources, and support from on-high to effectively keep crime in check. The reality is that Kiwis today do not feel as safe to go about their everyday lives as they did just a few years ago, and it’s important to state that I do not believe this is the fault of our hardworking and dedicated police. Criminals aren’t stupid and they have watched closely the way that Labour has implemented a soft-oncrime approach to law and order policy since they were first elected in 2017. Criminals can see that under this Government, crime is not taken seriously, with the Government’s sole justice policy being to reduce our prison population.

EASTER: BLESSING OF PALMS

This blessing can be heard coming from a long way off. This blessing is making its steady way up the road toward you. This blessing blooms in the throats of women, springs from the hearts of men, tumbles out of the mouths of children. This blessing is stitched into the seams of the cloaks that line the road, etched into the branches that trace the path, echoes in the breathing of the willing colt, the click of the donkey’s hoof against the stones. Something is rising beneath this blessing. Something will try to drown it out. But this blessing cannot be turned back, cannot be made to still its voice, cannot cease to sing its praise of the One who comes along the way it makes. —Jan Richardson from Circle of Grace: A Book of Blessings for the Seasons Ma te Atua koe e manaaki i ngā wā katoa

MANY QUESTIONS WITH LABOUR’S COGOVERNANCE MODEL

It seems to me we have had “co-governance” since the creation of Maori electoral rolls and electorates. Maori have the choice of the general roll or the Maori roll. The fact that Maori have favoured Labour only means they have missed opportunities to have influence in all government decisions that

ecently, there have been a lot of reports both locally and nationally about increasing rates of crime, with criminals getting bolder as a result of the Government going soft on crime. Just in the last couple of weeks there have been multiple stories of ram-raids, including here in Pakuranga, with dairies, jewellery shops and pharmacies all being targeted by what appears to be higherthan-usual criminal activity in our community. The eastern suburbs of Auckland have typically enjoyed relative peace and safety, with low rates of crime and a strong police presence to deter bad actors. Over the last couple of years however, the rising crime rate has become visibly noticeable to those of us who live here, with many feeling like there isn’t enough being

Something has to change. One of the key responsibilities of any government is to keep its citizens safe from those who would do them harm. Based on statistics and the experiences of those I speak with, far more needs to be done. Simply put, the Government needs to make law and order a top priority, ensure police have the leadership and support to do their job of enforcing the law. The Government must stop being fixated on the prison population. We also all have a role to play in reporting all criminal or suspicious activity we witness and keeping an eye out on our community. Reporting helps to ensure the police have the best possible information to work from, and supports them as they target where to put their limited resources. Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga

they could have had if they had sat on the cross benches, particularly since MMP. For Labour to start appointing unelected Maori to councils and boards is outrageous and something not within the Treaty terms (which I have read). I can only hope that National will undo all the damage that Labour is causing. Anything less will only increase racism in NZ. Maori are a minority, they have advantages that no other minority group have with their own MP’s. It has to stop right there.

COUNCIL MISMANAGEMENT COSTS AUCKLANDERS MORE AND MORE

More revelations that Auckland Council is in greater financial trouble is no surprise – after a decade of financial mismanagement, millions wasted on vanity projects and poor leadership, Aucklanders are left to foot the bill yet again. Goff wasted $935k on a secret report for a waterfront stadium that we don’t need nor can afford. Now he’s busy selling our local parks to balance the books and even that’s not enough. I love this city, I just wish all our councillors cared just a little bit more. Some professional discipline wouldn’t hurt either.

HIGH DENSITY HOUSING

After nearly 40 years of maintaining our Howick family home, we find the neighbouring property can be developed into five threestoreyed buildings built right on our boundary. Any consideration for us not being required. These projects appear to take years of constant noise, cracked footpaths and portaloos.

This area also had excellent shopping malls. Pakuranga and Highland Park are now derelict and have been for years with the odd brave business still struggling on. The old Howick Library appears to have its lights on permanently and the interior has been trashed. The Howick Village is special but so-called developers who are not interested in our special character are moving in to make a fast profit, possibly building the next generation of Fawlty Towers.

PM NEEDS TO STEP UP FOR UKRAINE

The Prime Minister and her government seem constitutionally incapable of deciding to provide substantive arms support to Ukraine in that country’s battle against the might of the forces of Putin’s Russia. Providing items that do not enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and to take the attack to the invading Russians is not effective assistance by New Zealand. It is window-dressing on the periphery of an appalling war of aggression. Many of the democracies with which NZ identifies have promised and are providing military hardware to Ukraine, but Jacinda Ardern, a former president the International Union of Socialist Youth, seems to find it hard to take the step of providing effective help to a country fighting to defend itself and its citizens against aggression and heinous slaughter. It would seem that Ms Ardern is looking over her shoulder at China, a country that has not supported UN votes condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and its commission of apparent war crimes against its people. I am drawn to the conclusion that Ardern’s government is more concerned with not upsetting

MIND THE BLIND

Stop! Before you think it, this is not a bleat from a disabled person expecting special treatment. It is about consideration. And yes, I have a guide dog with a harness and labelling on the handle explaining he is a working dog. I have been walking the streets of Cockle Bay for the past six-anda-half years. I have met many people with and without dogs and have had very few problems. A quick lesson on a person with a guide dog. The dog walks on my left and I hold a lead as with any other dog, but [there is] also a guide dog harness for correct positioning next to the dog. If a person is coming towards us, the dog is trained to keep to the left but not to leave the footpath unless there is no other option. The dog is trained to guide me around obstacles on the footpath and even go on the road if vehicles

are blocking the footpath. Because of traffic noises, lawn mowers and many other noises, it does happen that I cannot hear a person coming toward me. If that person has a dog though, my dog will let me know in some way. He may bark, whimper or cut across me to the other dog. Please remember, I have absolutely no idea what the other dog is doing. Considerate dog walkers give us plenty of space, some even passing on the roadside. Inconsiderate dog walkers do not. Some even squeeze past me on my left side i.e. where my dog is. This can be unavoidable, but not always. A guide dog, although well trained, is not a robot. They will and do react to certain dogs. And signals the other dog gives off. And the guide dog can annoy the other dog just as much. Dogs are dogs. The simplest fix is too be aware of what your own dog is doing and, if possible, keep as much distance between the two dogs. But sometimes people seem unable or unwilling to use the brain their mother gifted them at birth. On Monday April 11, I had to cross Paparoa Road. I waited for about eight cars. A man asked me if I needed any assistance but I said no thanks. I crossed to the footpath, turned left and instantly a small dog started barking at my dog who veered towards pulling the lead from my hand. While I am trying to retrieve the lead, the dog owner says, “Can you get your dog away?” I reply, “What do you think I’m trying to do?” I haul my slavering vicious beast away, while the other dog, called Yappie I think, and the owner make zero attempt to move away.

Nib Little Legends Local junior rugby clubs and schools are once again being called on to enter the nib Little Legends $10K Relay taking place at the Blues vs Rebels game at Eden Park on Friday, May 6. Competing as part of the half-time entertainment, 10 teams from Auckland, North Harbour and Northland, will run the width of the rugby field, with a ball from player to player, to be the first to complete an entire team relay and win $10,000 for their club or school. Nib New Zealand chief executive Rob Hennin is delighted to bring back the relay in 2022. “We hope this funding boost helps to do that and enables a club or school to continue to keep our tamariki active in support of their health and wellbeing,” Hennin said. Last year’s winning team from Pakuranga United Rugby Club, put their $10,000 boost towards creating an inclusive girls’ and boys’ rugby programme in their community by upgrading their facilities to enable all genders access to changing rooms, toilets, and showers. Local clubs and schools interested in entering the competition need to simply tell the Blues and Nib in 50 words or less how they’ll use the prize money to support the health and wellbeing of their junior players. The final teams will be shortlisted based on their entry. Registrations close on Wednesday, April 27 at 5pm. Visit www. blues.rugby/nib-10k-relay.

COMMENT

At last Blues the real deal H

aving taken 18 long years to beat the Super Rugby champion Crusaders at Christchurch, the wait was almost worth it with the Blues’ 24-21 thriller on Good Friday. In a high-speed actionpacked contest worthy of a final, the Blues finally demonstrated their vast improvement after Leon MacDonald’s fouryear reign as head coach. As a former Crusader himself, MacDonald is well-versed in team building although he would also be the first to acknowledge the tremendous contribution made by forward coach Tom Coventry and this year’s input from Joe Schmidt who transformed Ireland into a world force. With hard-hitting skipper Dalton Papalii capping his best performance with a fine try and burly tighthead Ofa Tu’ungafasi and No 8 Hoskins Sotutu leading the forwards charge, Beauden Barrett capitalised on halfback Finlay Christie’s swift service with his best game in years. Switching from first-five to fullback with talented Stephen Perofeta, the speedy Barrett

made some glorious breaks, set up tries and kicked long and deep when required. However, in the second half Richie Mo’unga replied in kind with some nifty footwork to remind fans how lucky New Zealand is to have such incredibly gifted No 10s. Others to confirm their attacking class were electrifying fullback Will Jordan and dazzling right wings Sevu Reece (Crusaders) and Mark Telea (Blues). With Rieko Ioane and Braydon Ennor negating the other’s attack with strong defence, the answer to injured centre Anton Lienert Brown’s test replacement against Ireland wasn’t answered in this game. However, the Blues can thank the try-saving doubletackle executed by the flying Ioane and Papalii on substitute Dominic Gardiner for stopping the gallant Crusaders from snatching victory with a magnificent comeback.

At 20, robust flanker Gardiner is a former St Bedes First XV captain and head boy with pace, heart and a huge future. Other than a jubilant MacDonald, nobody appeared to relish the Blues victory more than 35-year-old veteran lock Luke Romano who has added starch to what has become a formidable pack. Although beaten, the Crusaders will also take heart from the result in the knowledge they had captain Scott Barrett red-carded for a shoulder charge which left them a man short for 20 minutes

before he was replaced. In fact, they were reduced to 13 men when David Havili was sin-binned for 10. On his current form, Papalii is the best No 7 in the country although the All Blacks selectors will probably be reluctant to replace gritty captain Sam Cane in the June series against Ireland. Competition for the midfield berths between Havili, Ioane and Ennor will also be strong with league convert Roger Tuivasa-Sheck likely to make a late bid after a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, versatile veteran Bryce Heem has been an unsung hero, slotting in at the Blues’ second-five berth where he contributes to the improved cohesive flow with accurate well-timed passes. In a country blessed with halfbacks of the calibre of Aaron Smith, TJ Perenara and Brad Weber, the highly competitive Finlay Christie bows to no one. With Beauden Barrett seemingly back to his magical best, his partnership with Christie is vital to the Blues’ title hopes. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwining sports writer
