A

gang boss who fatally shot a friend at his east Auckland home will serve more than 12 years behind bars for the crime.

Emergency services responded to a shooting in Bezar Place, Flat Bush, at about 1.15am on December 26, 2021, when a resident phoned 111 to report they could hear a person in distress at a nearby home followed by the sound of gunshots.

Members of the police’s armed offender squad gained entry to the two-storey property through an upstairs window and brought out several people, including a child, all of whom were unharmed.

A man at the house surrendered to police just after 8am the same day and was taken into custody.

Police found the body of another man, Petau Petau, inside the house.

Following a homicide investigation the arrested man, Andrew Lamositele-Brown, was charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

A jury found the 40-year-old guilty of the charges following a trial at the Auckland High Court last year. He reappeared in the court on February 8 to be sentenced by Justice Sally Fitzgerald.

The judge said Lamositele-Brown was living with his partner and four children at a property in Flat Bush at the time of the shooting.

He’d arrived back in New Zealand six months prior, having been deported from Australia under the 501 legislation.

Lamositele-Brown and Petau were friends. Lamositele-Brown had become president of an Australian chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang in 2019, while Petau was an associate of the gang.

McWatt sent off in style Murray Noel McWatt, the founder of the earthmoving, cartage and aggregates business McWatt Group Ltd, was sent off in style on Sunday morning with a huge procession of trucks and vehicles forming part of a funeral cortège.

His death notice says he passed away suddenly on the farm on February 12 aged 67.

The notice reads: “Loving husband of Catherine.

Cherished father of Shane, Emma and Aaron. Absolutely adored gramps of Lachlan, Bailee, Harrison, Charlotte and Isla.

Reporting errors leaves bad taste in the mouth T

he owner of a Howick eatery has been left shell-shocked after major news agencies published Auckland Council food gradings that were out of date and incorrect resulting in a massive downturn in business.

The stories - run under the headline “Auckland’s filthiest restaurants revealed after council inspections” – drew unprecedented negative comments on social media. Vanilla Plant Based Kitchen’s owner Jessica Chand is furious and is demanding the media groups Stuff, the New Zealand Herald, Radio NZ and NewsHub fix the damage they caused.

Chand’s store rating was dropped to D after an inspection in October due to temperature issues.

These were resolved quickly and remedied and within nine days had her A rating re-instated. Her store had no issues with either pests or hygiene. All but NewsHub had retracted the online stories after she complained and told the media houses they had erred and the story was damaging her reputation and business.

The articles stated that her cafe was issued a D rating because of poor hygiene and a pest problem.

The wording of the article also implied that she still had a D food rating at her business. Additionally, they posted pictures of other establishments with a pest infestation, without context to each image, implying that these images were taken in her cafe. “Besides a

nine-day period last October, my cafe has always had an A grade food rating. The downgrade was due to needing to improve our temperature checking and recording systems, along with needing a new ambient cabinet. The statement that we have pests is completely false,” said Chand.

“It’s appalling that the media can publish completely false information, cause so much damage to a business then just retract an article without an explanation to the public or an apology.”

She is also considering seeking damages.

“These reporters have regurgitated, word for word, a news report from last November that was inaccurate, poorly written and researched then, but to portray it as new information now is defamation, and I will be pursuing such. You have cost me time, loss of revenue, damaged my reputation and caused me emotional turmoil. At the very least, I expect a public retraction, an apology and a correction of the information they have published.”

Recovery team aims to protect beach I

nfrastructure problems leading to the closure of Howick Beach have seen Watercare call in its specialist flood recovery team in the wake of ‘black flag’ incidents.

When a black flag warning is in place at a beach it means people should not swim there due to very high risk of illness.

Watercare says a major leak from a wastewater pipe in mid-January was quickly repaired, but the black flag was extended when slips caused more damage.

The organisation says land movement saw crews make more repairs on February 1.

“Now the recovery team will work on long-term solutions involving moving the pipeline inland. “[The repairs] saw overflow warning signs placed in the beach car park and staff flushing the waterway to lower ammonia levels in it and at the beach outlet.”

Howick Local Board chairperson Damian Light says he welcomes the move. The original incident was due to a break in an exposed section of wastewater pipe behind a Selwyn Road home, he says.

“Watercare says the floods in January last year caused banks around the stream to loosen.

“Movement since then exposed the pipe in places and covered it in others, adding pressure that’s seen it fail in several places.

“Watercare hasn’t been able to save the pipe, but its specialist team will fix the issue.”

Light says when beaches are not safe the Safeswim website continues to be the main channel to communicate information to residents, with that information also shared on Facebook.

“Watercare has kept board members and ward councillors informed throughout, providing

updates on the leaks, repairs, and other relevant information.

“We do not have direct control over the assets, but the public has been clear more action should be taken to prevent issues, something reflected in the Howick Local Board Plan, which includes advocating for improvements on local stormwater and wastewater infrastructure to minimise overflows, and increased monitoring for illegal discharges.”

As of February 12, the black flag warning at Howick Beach had been lifted.

Vehicle overturns

Emergency services responded to a crash that caused a vehicle to overturn and block part of an east Auckland road.

A photo provided to the Times of the incident, which happened in Mellons Bay on February 12, showed a black vehicle lying on its roof on Bleakhouse Road, at the intersection with Etherege Place.

Police officers and fire fighters were in attendance.

In an update a short time later the same day, a police spokesperson said officers were attending the single-vehicle crash, which was reported at 10.16am.

“The vehicle has rolled.

Fortunately no serious injuries have been reported, though the driver will be assessed for a minor injury.

The scene will be cleared in due course.”

WHAT’S THE ISSUE WITH COUNTDOWN/ WOOLWORTHS CARDS?

Late January I was given one of the new Countdown/Woolworths cards to begin using in February.

At that time they were giving out the cards out willy nilly and there was no suggestion of surrendering the old Onecard to swap details onto the new card. I’ve been endeavouring to register the new card since February 2 when scanning the new one didn’t register. Since that date I have tried registering in-store – not possible, calling their call-line and even rang Woolworths head office, immediately being transferred to their Everyday extension and getting nowhere. This extension specifically states that it is not possible to register your card on the phone.

I’ve tried downloading the app from their website – I’m not computer literate regarding apps and was therefore unsuccessful.

Today I visited their

store at Highland Park and discussed the problem with their help desk. I was told that a lot of customers are complaining and some are even becoming abusive to staff because they are frustrated at the balls up with the introduction of the new card.

At present, my husband is in Kerikeri working on maintenance of our bach and he has been able to register and swap to the new card from his old Onecard (how, I’m not sure).

Because we share an email for business purposes, I am unable to register mine to the same email. I can understand the reason for this. Woolworths are frantically closing loopholes after being scammed by multiple people abusing the points system.

In order to register my card, the only way I can see possible is to use my son’s email, using our home address and landline phone (this is different from husband’s). Son is agreeable to this and he lives with us. I’ve tried to do this today and nowhere.

I am extremely peed off about the whole fiasco as

FACIAL RECOGNITION COMING?

Some supermarkets are looking at installing facial recognition software. Local artist RS, who wishes to remain anonymous, uses a combination of AI and other digital tools, mainly Photoshop, depending on what he is working on at the time. Foodstuffs North Island says it has started trialling the use of facial recognition (FR) as part of its ongoing fight against retail crime.

THIS HAS CAUSED SERIOUS HARM TO GOOD HOWICK BUSINESSES The public rely on Auckland Council, and accredited mainstream press, TV and radio to publish factual information in an accurate manner especially when they publish information relating to the health and safety of the public.

But what happens to businesses when such information about them is sensationalised, misconstrued or falsely reported.

Jessica Chand opened her café business, Vanilla Plant Based Kitchen, in Picton Street, Howick in November 2022 after fitting out the shop in an attractive manner. Her hard work and that of her energetic staff soon saw a steady clientele coming through her doors tempted by her tasty, quality vegan delights.

When a council inspector visited October 2023 for a random check, as they do, Jessica was advised she needed to improve her temperature checking and recording, and needed a new ambient cabinet. Jessica had always had an A grade certification and, as a responsible operator, she got to work and met the requirements of the council within nine days. It would have been sooner but the inspector was not available. For nine days her certification was downgraded, then immediately restored to A Grade Certification once requested changes had been complied with, and re-inspected.

So why then did the NZ Herald publish an article on February 8, 2024 under the heading of “Auckland’s filthiest restaurants revealed after council inspections”, implying that Vanilla Plant Based Kitchen had a D food rating due to pest infestation, and posted photographs of pest infestations of other establishments, implying these images were taken at Vanilla Plant Based Kitchen.

This was then taken up and posted online by NZ Herald, RNZ and 1News, and to add insult to injury, the article was then shared on-line by our own council representative.

The article has now been taken down

by NZ Herald, RNZ and 1News but the sensationalist headings still remain online with Vanilla Plant Based Kitchen named.

And where is the public apology?

Where is the redress for the immeasurable harm to the reputation of this viable business? As a customer who has watched this business and its reputation grow, I am incensed and ask the question of council and media outlets why, what, who, how… the hell?

I understand other Howick businesses have been similarly affected. I hope they collectively get together with a community-minded lawyer, and gain redress.

MAN IMPRISONED OVER FATAL SHOOTING OF GANG PROSPECT h Continued from page 1

On December 25, 2021, Lamositele-Brown and his partner and children spent time celebrating Christmas with other relatives. It was a normal and happy day, the judge said.

Lamositele-Brown had been drinking alcohol during the day and his partner had said during the trial he was drunk on the night of the killing.

“She explained that when you drink, you often accuse her of cheating,” Justice Fitzgerald told the court. “She said your mood had changed from when they first got home; she described you as ‘grumpy’.”

Later that night Lamositele-Brown’s children and partner went to bed as he stayed downstairs drinking and listening to music.

In the early hours of Boxing Day, Petau sent a text message to Lamositele-Brown wishing him a Merry Christmas.

Lamositele-Brown phoned Petau 10 minutes later and is believed to have invited him over, with Petau arriving at the Bezar Place house on his motorcycle at about 1.05am.

Lamositele-Brown’s partner came downstairs and met Petau.

She then sent a text message to her sister saying Lamositele-Brown was “carrying the toy in his stupid pocket”.

The judge said that reference was to the Taurus semi-automatic pistol Lamositele-Brown later shot Petau with.

Everything seemed fine between Lamositele-Brown and Petau when he first arrived but the situation deteriorated.

Justice Fitzgerald said Lamositele-Brown shot Petau while both were in the dining room.

“I am satisfied he was sitting at the dining table when this

“Mr Petau was shot in the torso, and while he was able to survive for a few minutes, the pathology evidence was that an injury such as this was not in fact survivable.

“After the first shot, Mr Petau was able to get from the dining room to the hallway where he collapsed.”

Lamositele-Brown’s partner immediately went downstairs to see what had happened. She found Petau lying face down on the hallway floor at the bottom of the stairs.

“This led to her screaming very loudly, which was heard by neighbours, a number of whom called 111,” the judge said.

“This was shortly before or around 1.15 am. Your partner lunged at you and tried to take the pistol from you.

“There was a struggle and she

reported to police in her formal statement that you had pointed the gun at her, and in her later 111 call to the police, she said that you had threatened her. I accept that evidence.”

Two of Lamositele-Brown’s daughters also went downstairs and saw Petau on the ground.

After the shooting, as Lamositele-Brown had barricaded himself in his house, he made statements to the police negotiator to “ask my missus” when questioned about what had happened.

“The reason why you had a beef with Mr Petau that evening ultimately remains unknown,” Justice Fitzgerald said.

Lamositele-Brown’s position during his murder trial was that the shooting was accidental.

The judge said when Lamositele-Brown was taken into custody a clear plastic bag containing 9.8 grams of cocaine was

found in the pocket of his shorts.

“When your house was later searched by police, they found a plastic bag in the master bed-

room containing 77.2 grams of methamphetamine; two further smaller plastic bags containing 853 milligrams and 382 milligrams of methamphetamine respectively.

“Police also found just over $46,000 in cash at the house.

The presence of this very large amount of cash, together with the drugs and the gun, has the hallmarks of commercial drug dealing.”

Justice Fitzgerald said Lamositele-Brown claimed to have cut ties with the Hells Angels.

On the charge of murder, she sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum period of 12 years and eight months.

Lamositele-Brown was also sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment for possession of methamphetamine for supply and one year in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm.

As the sentences are to be served concurrently, no additional prison time is added to his sentence.

opens It’s time for Local Kaur first solo Water Done Well exhibition L ast week, the National Government passed legislation to formally repeal Labour’s disastrous Three Waters legislation, their attempt to centralise water assets and take them out of local hands.

National has longfought against such a move and, as Local Government Minister, I was tasked with getting rid of it in our first 100 days in office.

The vast majority of councils and regional authorities in New Zealand were opposed to Three Waters from the start, as they have managed our water assets for decades at the behest of the ratepayers who pay for them.

Keeping them in local hands means communities can continue to hold their councils to account for the way these assets are managed, instead of central government telling everyone they know best.

But we won’t be stop-

Simeon Brown ping there. National recognises that some change will be needed to ensure our water assets are maintained to a high standard for generations to come and we accept that our water infrastructure is in dire need of attention and investment.

That’s why we’ll be implementing our own plan called Local Water Done Well, which we announced during the election campaign last year. It will consist of two separate Bills in Parliament, the first of which will be introduced and enacted by mid-2024, and the second of which will be enacted by mid-2025.

The primary goal of this new policy is to cre-

ate proper standards for water quality and for long-term investment in water infrastructure.

We support keeping decision-making in local hands but will require councils to take proactive steps to better manage water assets and give them the attention they deserve.

This will be achieved through required water service delivery plans that outline how councils will deliver outcomes for water quality, infrastructure investment and financial sustainability.

Essentially, councils will continue to take charge of solutions to their local water needs but will do so with greater oversight from central government.

I know most councils have already begun work on long-term plans for their water assets and I am looking forward to working with them as we deliver our Local Water Done Well plan.

Auckland artist Amrit Kaur’s latest exhibition opens at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick at the Malcolm Smith Gallery on February 24.

Fragments of Us is Kaur’s first solo exhibition in Auckland and includes more than 25 new paintings produced by the artist over the last year. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Kaur’s works balance figuration and abstraction as they contemplate everyday life and explore the overlooked pieces of a busy-day-today world.

The artist’s ambition is to explore humanity’s adjustment to its place in the natural world, highlighting the multiple personalities embodied in each of us.

Kaur observes that her paintings “begin in nature, influenced by my surroundings, but resolve in the contemplative solitude of my studio”.

Kanaris said even in New Zealand, we are living in angry times. Overseas research suggests that money, cost of living, the gap between the haves and have-nots and social media are helping fuel the rage – contact centre staff, hospitality staff, airline staff and other frontline workers are bearing the brunt of it.

“The research suggests people feel increasingly vulnerable when faced with situations they can’t control. When clients don’t feel they can control what is happening to them – not to be mistaken for a need for excessive control – their sense of wellbeing vanishes,” Kanaris said.

Drawing on these insights, Kanaris offers some advice for growing people and managing good customer service in angrier times.

A Work and Income (WINZ) case manager telling his client to ‘go rob a bank’ and ‘to shut up’ should also be afforded some empathy, says Customer Contact Network New Zealand (CCNNZ).

Facial recognition trialled

by Foodstuffs to fight theft F

oodstuffs North Island (FSNI) has started trialling the use of facial recognition (FR) as part of its ongoing fight against retail crime.

Seven supermarkets in the North Island are part of the initial trial with just one in Auckland – Pak’nSave Silverdale. A spokesperson for the group told the Times that while none were in east Auckland, this could change as the trial was expanded.

The trial is taking place in up to 25 North Island stores and is currently intended to run for up to 6 months. FSNI said the technology’s ability to help better identify repeat offenders and thereby reduce harmful behaviour in store will help Foodstuffs North Island determine if FR is adopted more widely by the group, a 100 per cent NZ-owned co-operative of more than 300 grocers across the North Island.

“Everyone has the right to a

safe working environment and a safe place to buy their groceries,” said Foodstuffs North Island chief executive, Chris Quin.

“This trial of FR in our stores is part of our commitment to keeping our teams and customers safe.

“Sadly, retail crime is a growing problem, here and overseas.

Our North Island stores recorded 4719 incidents in the October-December quarter of 2023 alone.

That’s 34 per cent more than the 3510 recorded in the previous quarter.

“Shockingly, one of our security team was stabbed recently and our people are being punched, kicked, bitten and spat at. We’re seeing over 14 serious incidents a week, including an average of two assaults.”

“We have a moral and legal

duty to make our stores as safe as possible for our teams and customers and we think facial recognition has the potential to help by identifying repeat offenders

when they try to come back into our stores,” said Quin.

“All images in the FR system will be instantly deleted unless a person has committed a crime, has been aggressive, violent or threatening towards our team members or customers, or has actively assisted in such harmful behaviour. This is a high threshold.

“The trial is important because we hope to establish if FR will help keep our people and customers safe without compromising their privacy. When preparing the trial, we’ve been very thorough in ensuring we respect the privacy of our customers, including having a specialist, independent organisation design and review the trial – they’ll also evaluate the results. We’ve also engaged with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner to ensure they’re well briefed and aware of how the trial will work.”

A FOND ADIEU CHRIS WOODS Chris Woods suddenly passed away on Tuesday, February 13, leaving his immediate family and CAB Pakuranga family profoundly saddened. Those who have visited CAB would have come across him.

He had a big presence.

Chris was an exemplary human being. He volunteered at CAB Pakuranga from 2006 to present, sometimes doing two to three shifts a week. He had a vibrant personality and a cheeky sense of humour.

He was an interviewer, a mentor and a peer reviewer. He did not take any of these roles lightly. As an interviewer he was empathetic, compassionate and always going the extra mile for his clients. As for his mentoring role, volunteers were lucky to have him as their mentor, always so encouraging.

He was also a very passionate peer reviewer, reviewing each enquiry thoroughly to maintain a high standard of responses. He was not one to hold back his thoughts, driving home the point but in a funny way.

No physical setback would keep Chris away from the bureau for long. He would be back as soon as possible and get on with the business of helping people, something he enjoyed a lot.

I [Vani Kapoor] had the privilege of being his team mate on Tuesdays for several years. However, it’s not just the Tuesday team who will miss him but the manager, all other volunteers and everyone whose hearts he touched will feel his absence.

Temporary electricity generation to an area of east Auckland has been established following a fire that damaged a power transformer.

A social media video of the incident, which unfolded in Chapel Road, Flat Bush, on February 13, appeared to show smoke billowing from a structure.

Another video, shot by Times’ photographer Wayne Martin, showed several fire trucks outside the Chapel Road shops.

A large power transformer adjacent to the shops and close to the road was damaged and covered in white foam after having been extinguished by fire fighters.

Police said they were notified of the incident at about 12.50pm.

A spokesperson advised residents to stay indoors as officers assisted Fire and

Emergency NZ at the intersection with Ormiston Road.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area as roadblocks were in place.

Due to the air quality, residents were advised to close their windows and doors and stay inside.

Pedestrians were also advised to avoid the area and the public was asked to follow instructions from emergency services.

Auckland Transport posted an alert on social media stating the section of Chapel Road between Ormiston Road and the southern end of Michael Jones Drive was closed.

The alert warned people to avoid the area and to expect traffic delays. The road was reopened at 2.30pm.

The fire also caused a power outage in the area.

Vector reported on its website the outage began at about

12.35pm.

A post on social media stated power was also out at Ormiston Town Centre.

In an update issued at about 2.50pm, police said the fire was out and residents were free to go about their business.

“Police assisted Fire and Emergency NZ at the intersection of Chapel Road and Ormiston Road earlier this afternoon, following a report of a group of shops on fire, along with a transformer.

“Police would like to thank nearby residents, motorists and pedestrians for their patience and co-operation.”

A spokesperson for power company Vector says it has set up temporary power generation for the surrounding homes and businesses while work is carried out to repair the fire-damaged transformer.

“The cause of the fire is still being investigated.”

The NZCT, which provides funding to community groups, has awarded Auckland charitable trust Aktive a grant of $100,000 for Game Plan AKL, a new initiative that will give select young people living in Auckland the opportunity to engage in sport and recreation activities of their choice.

“We believe in the power of giving and making a difference in the lives of young people. We know the health and wellbeing benefits that come from being active regularly. It doesn’t just help young Aucklanders. It also helps their family, friends, and the wider community,” says ambassador Dame Valerie Adams. Aktive chief executive Jennah Wootten says the ongoing impact of the cost-ofliving crisis in Auckland has seen many families sacrifice participation in sport and recreation for more immediate priorities, like putting food on the table, paying rent, or staying warm. “Cost is one of the greatest barriers to access sport and recreation for young people,” says Wooten.

TUNES CAN FALL FROM THE SKY He’s written songs that are timeless, marking points in history, and as he gets set to tour his Aotearoa again, Greg Johnson is as keen as ever to reveal new compositions on home soil, writes PJ TAYLOR.

ike all great songwriters who captivate with relatable storytelling, Greg Johnson can turn a moment in time into a beautiful enduring memory. Especially when adding equally interesting melodies, chord progressions, just the right instrumentation and enhancing harmonies.

He’s done it a long time now, three decades, and there’s no indication he’s going to turn his

hand at something else any time soon. Songwriter, musician, soundrecordist, and producer, and that’s the way he likes it.

The California-based Kiwi national music treasure is heading Downunder in March for another series of homecoming concerts, the 1000 Miles Tour. And he’s bringing his NZ-based band of legends to Howick’s Uxbridge Arts and Culture for what will be a very special Sunday evening show on March 17, St Patrick’s Day. Greg Johnson’s on a continuous roll

when it comes to producing his own music—song ideas always flow—and an example of his undoubted talent for capturing a short-term event in life, his latest released single, Rooster Tail, describes a unique cloud formation seen in Santa Monica one Monday evening.

“It’s a wee urban vignette inspired by a rocket launch, the remnants of which I witnessed in the sky at dusk a while back,” he told East FM at New Year.

“Everyone was looking up and

there was a very strange and bright cloud sinking down. It was already dusk. Incredible colours. The sun’s reflections. It turns out it was the remnants of a rocket launch from an air force base, about 60km up the coast.

“It was amazing how everyone was captivated by it, this very unusual cloud sifting down. This was the initial idea for the tune.

“Most of my songs have a visual aspect to them. A little vignette in my mind that triggers the whole thing.”

A LITTLE BIT OF MAGIC AND A LOT OF LOVE Fairies perform many crucial tasks, from collecting teeth and slugging around golden coins, to making sure little kids have rainbow filled dreams, but there are some fairies out there that are irreplaceable at a veterinary practice, writes Adri Rossouw, director True Vets.

Although these are real-life people, I group them with the fantasy beings of storybooks as there is no way that they can accomplish everything they do without some form of magic! They are our veterinary nurses.

Being a veterinary nurse is one of those ‘behind the scenes jobs’ where they might not be seen at all, but just like our storybook fairies, they often make or break the spell that saves the day. Over the years, I have seen a nurses’ special touch to calm down a patient and I am convinced that I have caught a glimpse of the golden sparkle of fairy dust on more than one occasion.

The long list of tasks veterinary nurses manage to accomplish, confirms my suspicion that they have a magic wand hidden somewhere in their scrubs. They make sure all our patients are comfortable, warm, and well fed. They take care of our patients’ medical needs.

They prepare drip lines, surgical instruments, laboratory tests and snacks (for the Vets, of course)

Opening verse and chorus of Rooster Tail: They comfort clients and keep them updated on their pets. They make paw prints and wipe tears.

Becoming a veterinary nurse takes 2-3 years of studying and is the start of a lifelong commitment to your patient’s needs. It is a job that can be messy, scary, and emotionally draining ... with thank yous being few and far between. It is also one of the most fulfilling career options out there if you love animals as you get to be rewarded with nose licks and furry cuddles.

So, the next time you visit a veterinary practice, be sure to give the vet nurse a big, warm-hearted smile as without them, there would be no fairytale endings for our pets.

The 3be ‘I don’t Care!’... is increasingly entering human conversation, for whatever reason, whether it makes sense to do so or not. It has many variants, so it is probably best not to use it at all, especially if you yourself use ‘angry’ language because, ‘to Care’ is everything!

The volume ranges from the ‘whisperer’ whom you can barely hear or understand, to the ‘screamer’.

Even worse, people who start with screaming ‘I don’t care’... rarely appreciate that this 3be, has an unfortunate finality which sometimes, can be followed by violence!

From this short list of options you could ‘save your life’, because humans get very hurt, very quickly. They may also not ‘forgive’ you for your unbridled rage! They may respond in like manner or worse. Add drugs and alcohol to this mix, and suddenly... trouble folks!

Sadly, you may also lose a friendship, respect and even an opportunity to improve a relationship.

The following alternatives can help you become a ‘winner’: tell me more; there’s a better way; it has promise; sorry I can’t help you now; why are you asking me?

I wish I could help you, but I can’t; why are you telling me this?; I really don’t have the time; it really doesn’t interest me; honestly, I don’t care which colour you choose; I can’t help you, but I may know someone who can.

There will always be an ‘angry version’ in almost every communication between people.

It is then when you need to do the ‘opposite’ to the ‘norm’. Don’t threaten, abuse, ridicule or hurt someone. All that will confirm is... that you are the Moron!

Use this wonderful ‘Irish Power Tool’. Slow it all down. Look them in the eye. Answer their question... with a question! Don’t attempt to offer an ‘answer’. Do that mostly with the sensible people. Just let those ‘angry ones’ try to cope with this model!

About two years ago, he moved from “my little studio to a much better one,” he said. “It’s not huge – a proper room with voice booths, room for everything you need – nice high ceiling.

“It’s been great. I’ve been busy in there working on a project which I can’t announce yet but will be in the new year.”

That announcement came recently, a new album Thunder In Fall, out February 22. “I decided to build the album around five main elements: the piano, analogue synth, a classic 808 drum machine, trumpet and voices.

“I’m really pleased with this album. It’s close to the sound I’ve been trying to achieve my whole career.”

He tracked online listenership of Rooster Tail and after two weeks said, “It’s interesting with Spotify, you can see who is listening and where they’re from, and there are new American listeners”.

Most of Johnson’s music life is spent working on personal creations, though he has time to “occasionally” produce other artists.

“And I’m based next to a music school.

My friend runs it and gets me to record some of her students. Mostly vocals. It’s fun to have the kids in the studio. They really are good fun. Singers – they enjoy the experience.

“The room I’ve got is vibey. Lots of lamps and interesting stuff, a bit of a curiosity shop. Everyone who comes in loves that. “It’s in a very creative area, in
