Benns says that the grant is asset and income tested and “we have made the point the current asset tests and income levels for the grant have not been changed since 2003.“Athorough review of these tests is needed to ensure that the grant criteria are reasonable. However, we also have concerns that the process is difficult, particularly compared to the ACC grant”.

FDANZ has suggested a more equitable amount for the grant would be $6300, near the ACC grant which is $7024 in the case of accidental deaths. Lim says that getting to even get it increased to $3000 would be “quite“Therechallenging”.arealotoffactors involved and a lot of people in need. There’s a balancing act.”

TUESDAY 23 Rise 6:53am Set 5:52pm Rise 4:22am Set 1:39pm 3:47am 4:27pm 0800 742 337 THIS ADVERT FOR A FACTORY By ZOE GARDEN Funeral directors are calling for a price increase for the Work and Income Funeral Grant as the costs for funerals and cemetery plots continue to rise. The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) reported last month that a sample of 17 council sites show the average burial cost is now more than $4000 with significant jumps happening in Tauranga, Hastings, Nelson and the Far North over the past two years. Auckland has seen about a 2 per cent increase. Chief executive Gillian Boyes says this takes the nationwide average cost of a very modest funeral with a burial to around $8400 against the Work and Income Funeral Grant which currently sits at $2280.70. Branch manager at Davis Funerals in Pakuranga Swee Han Lim told the Timesthat the price for a burial plot in Manukau Memorial Gardens is $4400 with $1200 in interment fees. In 2020, it was $5504.“It’snot a big increase, but if you add everything up on top of it –flowers, the cost of funerals – the prices up have gone up quite a lot,” Lim says. This trend is nothing new. In 2015, the NZ Herald reported that fees for burial costs across the Auckland region increased by an average 22 per cent, fees for an ash plot by 14 per cent, and interment fees by 132 per cent. At the time, a burial plot at Manukau Memorial Gardens had gone up 15 per cent from $3454 to $4000, plus interment fees of $1072. In seven years, that is a $528 increase.Limsays that pre-Covid, the price of a full funeral service with cremation, catering and 50 people in a chapel would be between $10,00012,000. This year it would around $12,000-$13,000, he says. “I don’t think the grant can keep up with the cost of living and the industry as a whole. We think it needs to be increased. In my personal opinion, I think realistically, if just covering the cost of casket and the service, I would say threea-half to four (thousand).”

Benns says that the Minister has responded by saying reviewing the grant will be part of a “wider package of welfare reforms”. “We have checked the hundreds of pages of welfare reform documents and can’t see any reference specifically to the funeral grant. “We have also spoken to two other Ministers and we are awaiting additional information from them”.

KC15518 By CHRIS HARROWELL The details of trips to China by a New Zealand politician have been discussed in a trial relating to election donations. Seven defendants including dis graced former Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross are on trial before Justice Ian Gault at the Auckland High Court. They’re facing charges laid by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) over donations made to National and Labour in 2017 and 2018. On trial alongside Ross over donations to National are business men Yikun Zhang, Shijia (Colin) Zheng and Hengjia (Joe) Zheng. Ross, Zhang, and Colin Zheng each face two counts of obtaining by deception. Joe Zheng faces one charge of obtaining by deception and one charge of providing false or misleading information. The Crown alleges two large donations made to National in 2017 and 2018 were split into smaller amounts and the identity of the true donor or donors was not disclosed to the Electoral Commission. Zhang and the Zheng brothers also face charges, along with two men and a woman whose names are suppressed, over a donation made to the Labour Party at an art auction in 2017. The Crown alleges the money Labour raised at the art auction came from Zhang and not the five people whose names were pro vided to the party as the buyers of five particular paintings. The first witness called to give evidence in court on Monday this week was Southland District mayor Gary Tong. He was on a trip in southern China with Zhang and others in October 2018 when news broke in New Zealand of allegations Ross had publicly made about a dona tion made to National earlier that year.Crown prosecutor Katie Hogan asked Tong about his knowledge of the defendants.

Tong said he and Zhang became friends and they worked together to have the Southland District establish a sister city relationship with the city of Shantou in south ern China. He said he twice trav elled with Zhang and other people to Shantou as part of that effort. He was accompanied by Zhang and Colin Zheng on the second trip to Shantou in October 2018.

FACILITIES FOR COMPLETION EARLY 2023

“We looked at a technical vil lage and cultural aspects of China and I started getting calls from New Zealand and American news media.”Tong said the enquiries he received related to Ross’s allega tions about the political donation. He said he spoke to Zhang during the trip and Zhang said he wasn’t involved in it. “The conversation took place in a vehicle on the side of the highway in southern China. I asked him, ‘are you involved in any donation?’ and it was a straight ‘no’.”

Ross’s defence counsel Ron Mansfield QC asked Tong if he knew who had paid for his travel to China. Tong said he believed the cost was covered by Shantou city and the Chao Shan General Association, of which Zhang had served as chairman. The trial continues and is set down to take about 10 weeks. New Lodge Howick Master Hincal Dogan, right, with his Grand Lodge of NZ Installing Officer David Piper, Auckland District Grand Master. MASTER BRINGS FRESH VIGOUR TO

SPORT NZ seniors chess champs in Howick

A national chess tournament which is to be held in Howick from Friday bears the name of one of Howick’s best-known identities and businessmen. The Ross Spiller Memorial tournament – the New Zealand Seniors & Veterans Chess Championships – begins on Friday and concludes on Sunday at the Howick Chess Centre in Central Terrace. Organised by Ross’s son Paul Spiller, the vice-president of the New Zealand Chess Federation and president of the Oceania zone, there is a maximum limit of 26 players at venue, the new Howick Chess Centre. Meanwhile, Spiller is already organising the Asian Seniors Chess Championships at the Auckland Rose Park Hotel in Parnell (opposite the Parnell Rose Gardens) from October 15 to 21. “This event is not likely to come back to New Zealand for many years and offers opportunities for international titles and norms,” Spiller said. “Players from India, the Philippines and Australia have already entered.”

The new Master of Lodge Howick is Hincal Dogan, a 41 year-old Turk. His installation as master was held recently at the Howick lodge rooms where many Grand Lodge Officers and other Masonic visitors celebrated his elevation into the master’s chair. Dogan emigrated to New Zealand with his wife Ceren and baby son five years ago. Already a Freemason and from a family of Freemasons in Turkey, he joined his local lodge and has made a rapid rise to his new office becoming one of the youngest masters in the 76 year history of Lodge Howick. The Dogan family recently moved into a new home in Bucklands Beach. He has a master’s degree in computer engineering and is employed as lead engineer software development with Xero Accounting. His main objectives as master in his one-year term are building the awareness and purpose of Freemasonry in the public domain, as well as improving the education of current members in Masonic history and the Masonic principles and practices that can improve and enlarge their lives. The lodge has an active programme of charitable work in the HowickPakuranga area including assistance with speech therapy for children with Down Syndrome and the donation of a special needs car seat for a family with a young child with genetic disorder Noonan’s disease. Many community charities are also beneficiaries of the lodge’s largesse. Dogan will ensure this traditional help to those in need continues. that works – helping young Kiwis to get ahead LuxonChristopher

COMMENT Welfare

LODGE

THIS POLICY HAS THREE MAIN COMPONENTS:  Community providers will be contracted to provide 18-24-yearold Jobseekers with a dedicated job coach to help get them into work, with funding linked to keeping young people off welfare.  Jobseekers will receive more support, with a proper assessment of their barriers to finding work and an individual job plan to address those barriers and get them on a pathway to work.  Those who fail to engage with their plan will face sanctions, such as money management or benefit reductions, but long-term under 25 Jobseekers who get into work and stay off benefit for 12 months will receive a $1000 bonus. National recognises that there are people on the Jobseeker benefit who have health or disability issues. These people have been assessed as having a pathway to work and are different to those on a Supported Living benefit. Rather than abandoning them, we want to make sure they get the help they need. Under this policy, they will have an individualised job plan that will reflect their situation and needs, so they can get the support that they need to become work ready – such as attending counselling sessions or doing volunteer work. It isn’t about forcing them into fast employment but helping them create the steps to get there. They deserve their independence and opportunities that a job provides just as much as anyone else. Sanctions will only come into effect if a person refuses to work with their job coach or engage in their job plan. Society has obligations to jobseekers, but jobseekers also have obligations to society. Taxpayers are happy to support people in their time of need on the basis those people are taking steps to help themselves. The youth of New Zealand are our future and a National Government I lead will not give up on them. I simply do not accept that some people are too hard to help.

What’s even more worrying is the number of young people under the age of 25 years who are on this benefit. Right now, there are 34,000 young people are on a Jobseeker benefit – a 49 per cent increase under Labour. What’s concerning is that 13,000 of them have been on it for a year or longer. That’s just not acceptable in a time of high employment. If this Labour Government can’t help get these young people into work now, it never will. Data shows that if someone is under the age of 20 and goes on a benefit, they will spend an average of 12 years of their lives on welfare. That is a tragic waste of human potential and National won’t give up on people who could and should be contributing. Clearly the status-quo isn’t working.ANational Government that I lead will take a new approach to reduce benefit dependency among our young people. The other weekend, I announced our new policy, ‘Welfare that Works’ which aims to break the cycle of benefit dependency. The policy will redirect some of the Ministry of Social Development’s (MSD) funding to community providers so they can build their capacity to work with young people and help get them into work.

The long-running Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme has historically been the starting point for a number of innovative new business ideas. And to add another entry to the list is a group of four teenagers from Pakuranga College. Students Eric Irani, Lucas Greenwood, Joshua Hall and Aman Kumar created a product, labelled Hip Cards – Hello In a Pack of Cards – that helps children and adults learn different greetings from around the world. Each card has a unique greeting from around the world. After six months of development with local artist, designer and fellow Pakuranga College student Yachna Patel, the cards have officially been launched. “We’ve taken an ordinary set of playing cards and made it into a learning resource for teachers in the classroom and parents,” Eric says. There is an online video series in production where students from different backgrounds will be saying their respective greetings.“Weremember being back in primary in the classroom and the teacher would say ‘Good morning’ in a different greeting. That was our inspiration. We spoke to the Ministry of Ethnic Communities and they really backed the product. They said that 20 per cent of New Zealanders are from different backgrounds.

The ministry is sending a film crew to Auckland this month to capture the exciting work the Hip Cards crew is doing, Eric says. The Hip Cards team has been visiting schools to show their product. They’ve put a twist on classic card games such as Snap. Instead of saying Snap, the individual would say the country where the greeting is from, or the greeting itself. “That’s the game the kids love theOr,most!”forthe older kids, they’ll play a version of Pictionary. The team will be split into two and the guesser will have to guess the country the greeting is from or say the greeting of that country.HipCards have been manufactured by East Tamaki business All About Design and Print.

Asmall opening ceremony at last Sunday’s Meet the Villagers open day at the Howick Historical Village marked the culmination of a project led by well-known former local baker Jim Duckworth of installing and operating a heritage recipe bread oven in the grounds of the village. From the throngs of people trying out the various baked treats cooked in the oven, the project will be a great draw card for visitors epitomising the goal of open-air museums of bringing history to life.In presiding over the ceremony president of the Howick & Districts Historical Society Marin Burgess said, “The Society and the public would like to thank Jim on multiple levels, the first being his farsightedness of using a pre1850 heritage method of making bread with ferment as opposed to using yeast and then funding and supervising the installation of a special brick-lined oven so that visitors could enjoy the bread and other baked treats on village live days.“Not only has Jim funded the oven and some of the materials for the structure including some beautiful thick macrocarpa planking to make the work and serving table, he has supervised its installation and has trained people in bread making and operating the oven.“This live day baking project has helped to re-invigorate the village with visitors queuing for the baked treats. Absolutely wonderful.” Duckworth said, “I have had a lot of enjoyment in developing the heritage recipe and bringing the overall project to fruition. “The village had an oven but because of its design I could only ever cook scones in it. As it has fallen into disrepair. I wanted use my skills and experience as a baker to create something that would bring a lot of interest and enjoyment to village visitors. “It has been a labour of love but I could not have done it without the considerable assistance of various groups involved. A great team effort. I am making the donation on behalf of Howick Rotary who have had a good working relationship with the village over many years”.Whilst Duckworth was the main driver of the project, he was helped by society members and village staff, particularly vice president John Osborne, a group of volunteers involving current Rotarians Malcom Pascoe, Bill Charkow and Colin Monk and former Rotarian Ted Aislabie who also carries out many other tasks within the village. The project also involved the Menzshed who took on the task of making a new kauri baking ‘peel’ that is used to load and unload the hot oven. Howick Rotary president Madeleine East, who was at the ceremony helping to prepare the baked treats for visitors to eat, said, “It is wonderful that we have been able to support Jim and the village in achieving the joint goal of making heritage recipe bread and other baked treats available for visitors on live days and it is great to see the wide support that the project has had from all across the community.”

That’s 1/5 people so it’s really important to make it more inclusive so we can at least greet them in their own language.”

Because few in Aotearoa had seen the tall Norfolk Pine with a cross on top, he potted up hundreds of small pines which he brought to Auckland where he arranged a charity auction. Most farmers bought two or three trees. A few have survived such as those at Edwin Roberts homestead in Butley Drive, or John Gill’s homestead in Cockle Bay Road [he owned Cockle Bay farm].

She says new board members should bring an open mind to the role. And they need to know their way around a laptop as much of the board’s business, especially in recent years due to Covid19, is done online using various platforms.“It’snot a part-time job. People need to be available most of the time. Even though we only have one three-hour workshop a week on a Thursday, and a business meeting once a month, currently on a Monday evening, there’s still a need to attend other meetings in between. We expect 20 hours per week from members. This can be more or less, often with weekend events to attend.” White says the job entails a lot of reading and she recommends candidates go through a board business meeting agenda to see what it covers.“Ibelieve everyone has something to bring to a team like this. It’s wonderful if we can attract people from different nationalities and neighbourhoods to bring their views to our democratic decision making.”Spiller says being a board member is a “serious commitment” and candidates need to understand it’s not a hobby or part-time job. “It’s something you have to commit to, and be prepared to put in the work and the hours to serve your community. People need to understand the potential time commitment and the fact a lot of that time would be during the week when they would otherwise be working in a 9-5 job if that’s the sort of situation they’re in.”

He says people elected to the board should debate issues with their colleagues with an open mind and be ready to listen to other views. Board members need to be tolerant and respectful of other people’s opinions, he says. “We receive recommendations from council officers and advice from staff and we weigh that all up before we form an opinion. “Often that may not be something you agree with personally. We have to do our best to remain impartial and weigh up the evidence and make a decision for the greater good. That’s not always easy for people, particularly if they’ve got their own preferences orTheagenda.”council elections will be held by postal vote on October 8.

COUNCIL Advice

By CHRIS HARROWELL People who get elected onto the Howick Local Board need to know their way around a laptop computer, be open-minded and a good listener, and have enough time available to do the job properly. That’s among the advice being given to candidates in the Auckland Council elections scheduled for October by board chairperson Adele White and deputy chair JohnWhiteSpiller.says candidates should know board members’ key tasks include providing local leadership and developing relationships in the“Wecommunity.haveacivic role in attending functions and events and we can be asked to give guidance in community decision-making. We provide input into council controlled-organisation plans and initiatives, give them feedback and we monitor and report on implementation of local board agreements.“Theboard decides how various purses of money, such as our transport capital fund, are spent, so there’s a chance to bring issues of concern to the table and prioritise and discuss those.”

Each fortnight we share a history bite relevant to Howick, Pakuranga and districts marking the area’s settlers’ landing 175 years ago.

In 1858 Bishop Selwyn visited Norfolk Island and discovered that Pitcairn Islanders had sailed from their island to Norfolk after the British Military had abandoned the penal settlement. The islanders needed funds to buy essential items.

HANG ON A MINUTE IAN! Re: God and science (Ian George, Times, August 3). Ian George solemnly informs us his God is in charge and we should beClearlygrateful.the head of the Russian Orthodox church in Moscow has a more powerful god at his disposal, one willing to exterminate the Ukrainians, destroy their property and steal their land. He pays well too. Patriarch Kirill is reputedly worth US$8 billion. tax benefits announced today are going to benefit high incomeearning tenants rather than the vast majority of tenants as a consequence.Manytenants have been vocal in expressing how their rental prices have been increasing and that they don’t have a good sup ply of the kind of rental accom modation that meets their needs. While many claim that it is land lord greed causing these problems, these price increases are mostly a result of Government policies, such as removing interest deductibility. Tenant groups have said that there is a rental crisis but allow ing mortgage interest deductibil ity for high-end rentals will not solve anything for the majority of kiwi tenants. Interest deductibility should be reversed for all rental properties, not just high-end build to rent ones. The vast majority of rental prop erties in New Zealand are provided by ordinary Kiwis who own one or two rentals. They mostly pro vide an excellent service to their tenants and new laws mean they must provide a warm, dry rental homes. These private landlords operate with low overheads and low (often negative) margins that actually provide true value for ten ants. These are the rental providers that should be supported, not large corporate developers. In our plan to fix the rental cri sis, the NZ Property Investors Federation has suggested that removing the three tax increases of disallowing mortgage interest as a tax deduction, ringfencing and the brightline test would actu ally provide some real relief for the majority of tenants. We also suggest introducing a security of tenure model based on the German system and this would provide long-term security for the majority of tenants, not just for high-income tenants who are likely to benefit from this latest announcement.

WHAT’S GOING ON WITH OUR LOCAL BOARD? For some time, I have been fol lowing this sorry saga where those we elected to make deci sions for Howick are struggling to resolve the use of this building over a protracted period. Perhaps we are not being told the full story? Each time I’ve read an article in the Times, when a motion is moved to hand over the manage ment of the Howick War Memorial Hall, it seems David Collings has moved an amendment which has prevented it happening. In the interest of transparency, it would be good if David Collings could explain to the ratepayers what the perceived problems are with regard to the motions thus far. Over to you David Collings. NZPIF: THIS DOESN’T BENEFIT MAJORITY OF TENANTS

SIMPLE SOLUTION Australia and the USA hold the key and devasting forest fires in both countries are spelling it out. The fundamental principle that rain arises from evaporation of the ocean applies so much so that in the Queensland floods of 2010, ocean levels globally fell 7mm –until of course all that flood water was allowed to return to the ocean. Therein lies the solution to nor malising sea levels. The catastrophic destruction of vast areas of indigenous and com mercial forest in these countries requires a vast sprinkling system which vast holding tanks or res ervoirs in times of plenty (rain that is) could provide. It could kill two birds with one stone, as they say, protection of for ests and keep sea levels in check. It is that simple.

ZONTA CLUB COLLECTS FOR CHIP PACKET PROJECT East Auckland Zonta Club mem bers are collecting chip packets, biscuit packets or any other foil packaging to re-use for the crea tion of survival sheets (thermal blankets) for those living on the streets throughout New Zealand. Annually, New Zealanders spend an average of $157 million on bags of the humble potato chip and a chip packet can take 80 years to decompose in landfill so collect ing these for repurposing for blan kets also assists the environment. The CRISP Packet Organisation collects the foil items and fuses them together and when heat is applied, and another layer of recy cled plastic is applied back and front they create blankets of 2m x 1.5m – enough to wrap an adult’s body. The Chip Packet Project (CPPNZ) was founded in September 2021 during lockdown and was a spinoff of the UK-based organisation, Crisp Packet Project.

SueHowickPeters GOD AND SCIENCE I read with interest Lorraine Harmon’s comments on Ian George’s letter (Times, August 3). Lorraine makes a statement (August 10) that science and God have no relationship with each other as though it was a state ment of fact rather than an opin ion as she has no proof of God’s non-existence.AsLorraine refers to the Big Bang which most scientists agree on as the origin of the uni verse some 13.7 billion years ago, can I ask her where the Four Fundamental forces namely grav ity, the strong and weak nuclear forces and electromagnetism cameTheyfrom.came into operation at the Big Bang which are necessary to hold the universe together and control its function. Only a super intelligence and power which we call God can be the author as science was not around at that time.

Your opinion matters to us. Email us at editor@times.co.nz; comment on our Facebook page, facebook.com/ timesonlinenz; or write to us at The Editor, Times Newspapers, PO Box 38232, Howick, Auckland 2145. Letters should not exceed 200 words and should carry the name, residential address and contact telephone number of the author.

BIG BANG AND ALL THAT Thank you Loraine Harman and Randel Case for your comments on ‘Feedback’ (Times, August 10). Comments on the principal idea, that science supports God’s laws was put forward in my letter to ‘Feedback’. Your personal ridicule and contempt adds nothing to our understanding. Why not use the scientific meth odology you uphold to test the statement made long ago, “in the beginning god created the heav ens and the earth”. Test this statement as you would any scientific hypothesis. It will require rigorous hard work on your behalf but the rewards are pro found. The ‘Big Bang’ theory inci dentally agrees with a ‘beginning’. Science has always revealed the brilliance of the creator God’s designs and intentions. Scientists past and present have used this truth to further their experiments and give us the medicines, the dis coveries of space that we all ben efit from today. Physicist Paul Davis writes ‘... that science offers a surer path to God than religion(s)’. As for free will, we all exercise our free will to either accept or reject a loving creator God. Some will say yes, some say no. Our responses do not alter God’s existence one iota.

Tick the yes box if you under stood all the spoken content of last weekend’s (July 23, 24) TVNZ 1 weather presentations at 6.50pm.Ifoolishly always thought that any broadcasting, be it television or radio, was to get the message across to the masses as easily as possible. There are many thou sands of bi-lingual speakers in this country, many multilingual. Many immigrants to this country speak Hindi, Mandarin, Afrikaans and a multitude of European lan guages as their primary language with English secondary. If a simple ‘uni’ language speaker such as myself cannot understand a weather forecast, what hope do theyWhathave?an embarrassment!

Questions to National trans port spokesman Simeon Brown show the fit-out of 8700sq m of Wellington office space will cost $25 million, or about $2870 a square metre. That’s significantly higher than the roughly $1600 a square metre fit-out costs that got Kainga Ora in trouble earlier this year. That’s an insane amount of money just for a fit-out. Hell, you can almost do a new build for less than that and this is just a fit-out and will not stop one car crash. Is there no control on their expenditure?

warm, dry but ultimately good value rental accommodation. Unfortunately, the discrimina tory removal of interest costs as a legitimate tax deduction has seen the cost of many rental proper ties increase and will continue to increase as the taxes are increased over the next four years for the majority of rental properties. What we now see with today’s (Friday, August 12) selective reversal of their mortgage inter est deductibility tax increase is that the Government has bowed to big business lobbying and changed the rules for large qualityto-rentdevelopers-turned-landlords.MinisterWoodssaysthatbuild-developersprovidehighrentalhousingsothese

Air New Zealand has given a helping wing to six young tūturuatu (Shore plover), relocating them from Cape Sanctuary in Hawke’s Bay to their new home on Motutapu Island.Shore plovers are endemic to New Zealand and are one of the world’s rarest shorebirds. With a population of just 250, these rare native birds are only found in the Chatham Islands and two predator-free islands off the coast of New Zealand. In partnership with the Department of Conservation (DOC), Air New Zealand flew the tūturuatu chicks from Hawke’s Bay to Auckland on Monday. Two of the birds were bred at Cape Sanctuary and the other four at The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in Christchurch, but were taken in by Cape Sanctuary prior to releaseSinceday.hatching in summer, the birds have been looked after with a collaborative effort from Cape Sanctuary staff, dedicated volunteers and supported by the local hapu Ngati Mihiroa, who escorted them to their release site. The chicks will spend around three weeks acclimatising to their new surroundings at an aviary on Motutapu Island and once they’ve acclimatised, they’ll be released into the wild to help bolster the Shore plover population on the island’s shoreline. Over the past 10 years, DOC and Air New Zealand have partnered in relocating more than 4000 native birds including kiwi, kākāriki and takahe. The airline has also transported a number of conservation dogs vital in finding and keeping wildlife safe from predators. The Shore plover chicks were transported in the aircraft cabin, securely fastened in seats. For flight attendant Annalise Michie the experience was one she’ll never forget.“It’s a fantastic opportunity to be a part of. Every day in my job, I look forward to greeting our wonderful customers - but I got to greet some customers of a different, more feathery kind and that’s really special.”

DOC technical advisor David Houston says a stoat incursion on Motutapu Island a couple of years ago all but wiped out the Shore plover population, but DOC and local iwi Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki have worked hard to eradicate the pests from the island. “This transfer is the first step in restoring a breeding population of Shore plover to the island,” says Houston. “A number of transfers over several years will be required to achieve this and we’re grateful to Air New Zealand for the support they provide.”

Pakuranga author Leonie Agnew has won another prize, this time the Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction category at the NZ Children’s Book Awards.Itwas for her book The Memory Thief (Puffin, Penguin Random House).Judges said, “From its eyecatching cover to the final conclusion, The Memory Thief is a stunning story that captures the reader early and holds them in an embrace of wonder, intrigue and imagination.”Thejudgesall agreed on the skill and writing craft of the author, sharing an extra depth and quality of language in this novel. “Unique but perfectly believable at the same time, The Memory Thief steps into another world whilst still inside our own. Memories themselves are both villains and heroes as they are taken or returned. The handling of a common illness, with its thoughtprovoking and original twist, is deftly handled and beautifully written.Agnew told the Timesthere were lots of great books in her category. “So it was amazing to be chosen. I’d only say that I want to encourage others to read the finalists, such as Spark Hunter, he Tomo or Amorangi and Millie’s Trip ThroughTime,” Agnew said. “It’s so important that we get behind New Zealand books because they’re up against international titles with huge promotional budgets. “So many great, local books are hiding in the corners of bookstores with no stands, displays or popups. Poppy’s Bookstore and Paper Plus in Howick do a good job of carrying New Zealand children’s book titles, so I’d encourage people to start Agnewthere.”said she didn’t have a lot of time to think about the awards beforehand because she was so busy.“In the school holidays I was the chairperson of the Storylines’ national conference for children’s writers and illustrators,” she said. “Then I had to work quickly on publisher’s edits for my next novel, The Impossible Story of Hannah Kemp, and also fulltime work. “So, when I finally found myself in Wellington and actually winning, well – it took a few days to sink in.”

The 30-year association between Macleans College and the Himalayan Trust has been crucial for supporting the trust’s work in reducing poverty and empowering communities in the Mount Everest region.

“The past few years have seen our service efforts navigate Covid restrictions and over this past term alone we have seen many students donate anywhere between $20 to $100,” Dave said. Kyla also shared the house’s motivation for supporting the trust.“The children of Nepal don’t have many of the opportunities that we do at Macleans College on a daily basis. We are helping to allow these children to live their lives to the fullest.”

GOLF CLUB APPLYING FOR REZONING

The Pakuranga Golf Club has applied for a plan change from residential mixed suburban housing to open space sport and recreation. The club’s general manager Sam Abela told the Times, “The reason we have made the plan change request is of all the suburban golf courses in Auckland, we are currently only one of three that still have the incorrect zoning for our land use. “A move to rezone the land recognizes the longstanding use of the land as a golf coursebefore that it was a farm. “Residential zoning is to enable construction of dwellings and residential activity like we have on the boundaries of our course. That’s not what our golf course is used for. The zone we have asked for permits golf course activity, maintenance and development of buildings without needing resource consent.”

News bites

By GEORGIA WHITEHEAD, AUT UNIVERSITY JOURNALISM student Macleans College’s Hillary House has managed to raise an immense sum of money for the Himalayan Trust despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

For the past two years Hillary House pupils at the Bucklands Beach school committed to fundraising for the trust through bake sales, selling trumpets, and the annual Hillary carnival fundraiser, amidst the world having shut down due to Covid. Special guests Sarah Hillary, the daughter of the late mountaineer and the first man to climb Mount Everest Sir Edmund Hillary, and the trust’s operations manager Alexander Hillary, recently attended an assembly at the school to receive a cheque for $10,000. It was the first assembly of its kind since the pre-Covid days and included a kapa haka performance and a piano and vocal performance of Michael Jackson’s Man in the AlexanderMirrorHillary spoke of how “inspiring” it was to hear about the house’s fundraising efforts, which make it possible to build new schooling facilities and a computer lab in Nepal. A speech by house captains Kyla Bhathena and Dave Khadka acknowledged their fellow pupils’ generosity and continuous fundraising efforts despite the hardship created by the pandemic.

ImplantFree* ConsultationsOrthodontic& Auckland Family Dental, Drury branch is the gold standard when it comes to replacing one or more missing teeth with implants. Implants are titanium root-like structures surgically placed within the bone onto which a restoration is placed a few weeks later, that would look like the tooth that was lost through tooth decay. A healing cap is placed on the first stage then it is replaced with a ceramic or porcelain crown weeks later. The treatment results in a permanent restoration that looks and functions as a natural tooth that helps maintain bone height in the area of the implant as the patient ages. More importantly, the patient regains the natural chewing capacity lost through dental problems and makes the patient feel a lot more confident with smiling and eating in public. Drury Dental has the experience, training, and expertise to make the process as safe and pain-free as possible for their patients. Dr. Kavendra Naidoo has an extensive background in dentistry, surgery and medicine. He has a dental degree from Otago University and a Medical Degree from the University of Auckland. Dr. Kav Naidoo has over ten years’ experience in implantology, placing hundreds of implants to date. He also specialises in wisdom tooth surgery and crown work. He is professional, calm, objective and is attentive to his patients’ needs and wants. After a thorough examination conducted by Dr. Naidoo, he will present to the patient all possible treatment options, including implants, dentures, or bridges, and explain the benefits and drawbacks of each procedure. This assists the patient in making decisions about their own oral health. Dr. Naidoo gives patients the choice of IV sedation during their dental procedures to make the experience as stress-free as possible. Drury dental is equipped with all the modern tools and techniques, allowing for fewer injections and the use of lasers to minimise cutting and drilling. This makes implant placement virtually painless and minimally invasive. All surgery is done in-house and patients are provided with a pack of post-operative medications and instructions to take home with them after the procedure. Patients are called the day after by a dedicated team to ensure uneventful recovery. The recovery time is usually between five and seven days, according to Dr. Naidoo.Ifpatients are unhappy with their existing removable dentures, Drury Dental offers “all-on-four implant surgery” wherein all teeth are taken out and four implants placed on each jaw bone. These 4 implants would then support a denture that is much more secure and esthetic. Auckland Family Dental also has clinics in Milford, Parnell, Botany and New Lynn. The Drury Dental Branch is open Mondays through Saturdays and appointments can be made by calling 09-2747761, by sending an email to drury@aucklandfamilydental.co.nz or through live chat on their website at www.drurydental.co.nz. HEALTH Charity dinner helps ME

The Rest Assured Respite Charitable Trust is looking forward to another event on Wednesday September 21 at the Lounge. Thanks to Howick iden tity Val Lott who organised a Mid Winter Christmas at The Lounge in Howick last July.

Last year tickets sold out in the first week and many businesses and individuals donated items for the auction. Matthews says the need is even greater now for the TrustsManyservices.havebeen helped through the Meals Support Programme and those receiving help have been incredibly grateful. The trust is growing due to demand for its services. It has just opened its second op shop, The Charity Corner, at 1484D Dominion Road, Mt StudiesRoskill.haveshown that 10 per cent of those diagnosed with Long Covid will go on to receive an ME/ CFS diagnosis. The illnesses share many similarities according to the research of Professor Warren Tate at Otago MatthewsUniversity.saysshe believes the ultimate goal of the trust, which is to provide respite care for those with ME/ CFS, will also be vital in caring for those with Long Covid. Matthews, who has ME / CFS herself and after one month in hospital has returned home and is still very unwell, knows first-hand theHerneed.condition had deteriorated to the point where she was unable to tolerate food and tube feeding is necessary. She still has a way to go but has been very grateful for the help given. Many with ME/CFS do find that hospitals or rest homes are not conducive to the rest needed for their symptoms of light, chemical and noise intolerance. They do better in very quiet envi ronments. “We want to provide a fence at the cliff top approach,” says Matthews. “In reality, those with ME/CFS and Long Covid know that there is no ambulance waiting at the bottom when things get too hard. But we all hope research will pro vide some answers. In the mean time, we can ease the burden on patients and families through practical help.”

Times photographer Wayne Martin captured these images. As previously reported, the centre was purchased by Foodstuffs in February 2018. It will build a Pak’nSave at the site which it said will create up to 300 new roles.

COMMUNITY School club delivers gifts to East Care staff

Demolition is well underway at the former Highland Park shopping centre.

Each term the Howick College Z Club works on an initiative to give back to the community.Thegroup’s purpose aligns with Zonta International’s mis sion of advocating for women, empowering members, and edu cating their school community on societal inequalities. With these objectives in mind, the club decided to recognise local nurses and healthcare workers at East Care Medical Centre, not only for their help with day-to-day health and well ness needs, but for their unflag ging support and care throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. “Whether it be our nurses, doc tors, pharmacists or reception ists, we would not have made it through the pandemic without them,” said Z Club president and Howick College head student Leila Alsabak. To demonstrate their appre ciation, the group collected dona tions to make gift baskets full of goodies and discovered that appreciation for East Care staff extended far beyond Howick College. Many small businesses such as The Meadowlands Cheesecake Factory, Unichem Royal Oak Pharmacy, Cinnamon Brown, The Natural Health Co, Hancocks Cafe, Howick Village Grocer and Michael’s Emporium Howick were keen to chip in and help. The group presented the bas kets to East Care representatives Tania Farrell and Annaliese Robson, who were delighted to accept them on behalf of their colleagues.Handwritten notes from stu dents expressing their gratitude were also included with the baskets.“Thank you, Z Club. It was lovely to walk into the lunch room and see all your notes. Very touching,” commented one East Care staff member. “The most valuable lesson we have learnt from this initiative is that whilst a gesture like this is appreciated, our healthcare work ers deserve the utmost respect and gratitude from our commu nity at all times,” said Alsabak. Z Club was also privileged to have representatives from Zonta East Auckland and newly appointed Zonta District Governor, Phillippa Jacobs-Lory, attend the presentation.

The Pakuranga Tennis Club recently cele brated its 100th anni versary with a variety of high-profile activities. These included a meet and greet past members night, a formal dinner at the Pakuranga Golf Club and a family fun day. Each event was wellsupported with more than 100 sitting down to the for mal dinner on the Saturday evening. Presentations were made by past and present members detail ing different eras of the club’s history, with a key note address by the CEO of Tennis Auckland, Rohan West. Sunday afternoon’s fam ily fun day was originally intended to be a fun tour nament featuring both jun iors and seniors, dressed in period costume and play ing with antique wooden racquets. Deteriorating weather saw a rapid change of plans with a tennis quiz organised by life member Jill Hatley and a fashion parade of members in their costumes. Also on display was a 300 historic photo display, a digital photo loop of players past and present and part of an antique tennis rac quet collection owned by member James Li. “I am indebted to all members of our Centenary Planning Group for the huge amount of effort put in to planning the event,” said organiser Paul Tibbutt. “The weekend was post poned over four separate dates by Covid, but to see so many members, past and present, finally enjoy ing the occasion made it all worthwhile.”

Stanley was one of 21 boxers in the 71kg division which was one of the strongest divisions with many boxers competing at Olympic games and world championships while others won medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Half Moon Bay fighter Wendell Stanley from Revill’s Boxing Gym in Pakuranga came away from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with a fifth overall placing in his 71kg division out of 21Heboxers.now has his eye on the Olympics in France in 2024. Stanley was away for four weeks including two weeks at a training camp in Belfast with the New Zealand team. The training camp was held at the university of Ulster and had teams from Canada, England, Northern Ireland, Australia and a team from Saudi Arabia who were there for experience.Thecamp was a tough one with three sessions a day and sparring against other countries’ boxers every two days.

Stanley went through to the round of eight (quarter finals) where one more win would have put him into the medal round. He faced Tiago Muxanga from Mozambique who is a known puncher and had stopped his previousThisopponent.wasthe fight of the night with the crowd giving both boxers a standing ovation. Many thought Stanley had won the bout but the decision went the other way via a split decision. Although disappointed with the result, he is determined to compete in the Olympics which is two years away in Paris. New Zealand boxing coach Billy Meehan was very impressed with Stanley, praising his work effort and skill level at the highest level of the sport. His opponent went on to claim the silver medal. Back home in New Zealand Wendell is having a well deserved rest before he gets back to training at Revills Boxing Gym in New Zealand.Lance Revill, head coach at Revill’s Gym, is proud of Wendell and was impressed with his performance and is looking forward to what is next with the young boxer.Meanwhile the gym itself has been busy with other boxers winning local tournaments and the gym being well-represented at the upcoming Howick sports awards, which includes finalists from the gym in Sportsman of the year, Youth Sportsman of the year, Official of the year, Club of the year and Coach of the year.

Presented by Sheyan Samarasinha and Bronwen Le Vesconte of Public Trust, this important seminar will explain the benefits of having a Will and an Enduring Power of Attorney, and how they can protect you, your assets and your family, as well as an overview of Family Trusts and Pre-paid Funeral Trusts.

He drew the bye in the round of 32, which meant he was through to round 16 and faced Thabiso Selby Dlamini who on paper looked the more experienced boxer who was now taking part in his third Commonwealth Games. He had competed at the 2020 Olympics as well as the world champs and was a multiple-AfricanStanleychampion.hithis opponent with a body shot in the second round causing the referee to stop the fight part giving him the win.

Stanley had an excellent camp with top sparring against the current 71kg England and European Champ Mohammed Akbar and Olympic Bronze medallist from Northern Ireland Aidan Walsh (who went on to win Commonwealth Gold), along with others to get him ready for the games. He said the training helped prepare him for the pressure that he was going to face at the games and the experience from facing international boxers in sparring gave him all the confidence he needed to get his games off to a great start.
