Firefighters
Local community leaders have been quick to condemn the actions of a group of people who allegedly broke into five east Auckland businesses. A police spokesperson says officers are investigating multiple reports of burglaries committed in Howick on Tuesday morning.
Bin Inn store owner Chanchal Deol says the group didn’t steal anything from his store. He says the till was open and empty and he believes they filmed their actions to upload to social media app TikTok. “They came in and in 30 seconds they had come and gone,” Deol says.“Idon’t know how they did it but they broke a glass [at the storefront]. It’s upsetting. We’ve been celebrating nine years’ business this year and we’re celebrating this month as our [store’s] birthday.” Deol says he lives close to his store and got there within two minutes of being alerted to the break-in. protesting at Botany Junction on Friday. photo Wayne Martin

“At about 3.05am police responded to reports of a group of offenders breaking into several retail addresses on Moore Street. “It’s understood the group arrived and later fled the scene in a dark SUV. “At this stage, police enquiries remain ongoing and no arrests have been made.”

The stores targeted at the block of businesses are Bin Inn, Pizza Club, Fruit World, Awesome Shop and Yume Sushi. Police were still at the scene and workers were cleaning up the mess caused during the breakins when the Times visited on Tuesday morning. Large panes of glass were broken at the entries of Pizza Club, Yume Sushi and Bin Inn. The front of several stores was cordoned off with yellow police tape. The five offenders who broke into Bin Inn were filmed in action by its security cameras.
$450,000 CROSSING
Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown strongly opposes a plan to install a raised pedestrian crossing in his electorate.
AT says in the fiveyear period from 20162020 there’s been two serious and five minor injury crashes recorded at that location and a further seven non-injury crashes. Brown says it’s an “extraordinary” amount of money to spend on what he describes as a “speed bump on Pakuranga Road”.
“Not only is this a waste of money but it will slow everyone down trying to get in and out of east Auckland on one of the busiest roads in New Zealand. “It will not solve any safety issues at that intersection as there’s a safe crossing only 300 metres away. “AT should drop this proposal before going ahead with wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars of ratepayers’ funds on a project which will do nothing to make our roads safe.”
AT says the work is designed to make Pakuranga Road, which is New Zealand’s sixth busiest road, safer and easier to cross. But Brown has labelled the plan “crazy” and says the raised crossing will cause significant disruption to traffic flows and frustrate ona$450,000.constructmatedfromInformationmotorists.he’sreceivedATstatestheesti-costtodesignandthecrossingisThatamountincludesnewpedestrianrefugeGrammarSchoolRoad, relocation of the existing bus stop and shelter, and improvements to the existing pram crossings on Grammar School Road and Johns Lane.

Apublic meeting is being held to discuss the proposed construction of a controversial $450,000 pedestrian crossing on east Auckland’s busiest road. As the Timeshas reported, Auckland Transport is considering installing a raised crossing with traffic lights on Pakuranga Road. The crossing would be located immediately west of Grammar School Road and Johns Lane. The project, which is strongly opposed by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, includes the relocation of two bus stops, upgrades to kerb ramps and adding tactile pavers.

Brown is holding a public meeting to give people the chance to discuss the project and he’s invited AT to attend.“There has been strong community opposition against this proposal and we made that known through our petition and the many submissions made to AT during the consultation period,” he says.

She asked Taylor if he’d asked interviewees about the letter. Taylor said he hadn’t. He acknowledged he hadn’t asked Zhang or then-Labour Party president Nigel Haworth about the letter during their interviews with the SFO. Lindsay asked Taylor if he agreed that letter and others were an “obvious topic” to have discussed during the inter views. Taylor said in hindsight they should have been raised. Lindsay also questioned Taylor about an effort by Labour to target high net-worth donors who were able to donate amounts to the party of over $15,000, which is the threshold where the identity of the donor needs to be declared. She asked Taylor if he’d raised that with Haworth during his SFO interview. Taylor said he hadn’t.The judge-alone trial is set down to take 10 weeks and is at the halfway point.

“One of the main goals for the dish was not only to use ingredients (and fish) from New Zealand but to also let people know these ingredients can be used to make amazing dishes, ingredients people wouldn’t usually consider using,” Varick says. Another main point of the dish was sustainability. All of the fish was used, Caroline says: the bones were used for stock, and skin of the fillet to make crisps.“Whilst I only got a participation award, I think the more important take away from the competition is that I learned a lot from observing the other chefs and the dishes that they came up with,” Varick says. “I’m sure to take it as a valuable learning experience for when I go to university.”Varickhas been accepted into Auckland University of Technology (AUT) for culinary arts. “He’s gained all the skills and is ready for the industry,” Caroline says.

Debate continues on hall’s future

Well-known local res taurateur Ted Waters is joining the ongo ing debate about the stalled pro cess to appoint a manager for the Howick War Memorial Hall. The building in Picton Street was closed along with most Auckland Council-owned facili ties in the first half of 2020 when New Zealand went into Covid-19 lockdown. In late 2021 council staff rec ommended the Howick Local Board appoint the Howick Village Association (HVA) as the pre ferred applicant to manage it. Since then, the issue has been put before the board three times and each time it’s failed to appoint the HVA or any other group as the building’s manager. That’s left the HVA feeling con fused, with chairman Ken Scott recently saying: “Three times now it’s gone through a very robust process, it’s gone to the board and they’ve been unable to make a decision, so that’s very frustrating andThedisappointing”.buildingiscurrently being managed by the council as a venue for hire. Waters, who co-owns Picton Street eateries The Apothecary, Daisy Chang and Piggy Bar, says if a group is eventually appointed the building’s manager it should be one that represents “all of Howick”.Hedoesn’t believe the HVA is suitable as it covers a limited geo graphical area. “If there’s a good group of diverse characters trying to represent as many parts of the community as possible to put something together, I think the board might support it and make it all about Howick,” Waters says. “The groups I’ve heard were interested do want to run it. They don’t want to hand it over to the HVA.“Ithink if there was an organi sation that represented all of Howick, that should be the group that runs it.” Waters says the building could be left with the council to con tinue to operate as a venue for hire.“In this day and age it’s all auto mated. It possibly doesn’t need a manager.”Inresponse to Waters’ com ments, the HVA’s executive com mittee says it understands the frustration and opinions people may have about the war memo rial“Thehall.contract to be signed with council is a 36-page document, including having the building open at least five days a week during business hours, includ ing liabilities for any damage to the facility and performance parameters.“Havinga manager overseeing this building helps mitigate those liabilities for our members.”

‘Naïve’ National policy really misses the mark Labour List MP ChenNaisi Members of the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) went on full strike over their collective employment agreement on Friday. And they have the support of both the Greens and National parties.

Two local mums and Howick College have teamed up to provide two free community workshops for Clinicalparents.psychologist and CEO Dr Kristen Davis and clinical occupational therapist Leigh McCabe from The Psychology Group have extensive experience in working therapeutically with children, adolescents and families, and in training and consulting to professionals.Theduo is passionate about supporting the development of “emotional literacy” – the ability to observe and describe emotions and the positive impact this has on relationships and the way we experience the world. Howick College head of counselling Donna Brown says that the school is aware of the increased levels of worry and anxiety amongst young people. “We often have parents asking us, what can we do? This is why we’ve teamed up with Dr Davis and McCabe to offer two free community workshops for parents.”TheGrowing Emotional Resilience Parenting workshops are on Tuesday, August 30 and Tuesday, November 1. Part One: Worry Warriors (August 30) will be focused on helping parents support their children to manage worries. Part Two: Parenting with Mindfulness and Acceptance (November 1) will focus on understanding mindfulness, emotions, and learning the skill of acceptance.
The sessions start at 7pm (6:45pm arrival) at the Bill Dimmery Performing Arts Centre at Howick College on both days. “We know that at times mental health and wellbeing resources can be hard to access,” Brown says. “We know that as a community we all want our children to thrive so we are extending this invitation to anyone who would like to join us. We hope that we can work as a community to find ways to share knowledge and expertise that will further support our tamariki.”
Over the past fortnight, Times readers have been treated to columns from local National Party MPs touting their new carrotand-stick youth welfare policy. Christopher Luxon MP was confident his policy of job coaches and sanctions was a “new approach to reduce benefit dependency among our young people”. Not everyone was so impressed. Chair of Te Puea Marae Hurimoana Dennis described National’s policy as “naive”. Beneficiary advocate Tavia Moore told Radio New Zealand, “the idea that people are languishing on the benefit and it’s an easy place to be is not what we see.” The cracks started to show when Luxon struggled to answer whether those with disabilities would be sanctioned. Workbridge CEO Jonathan Mosen noted, “It’s not that we have a lot of disabled people sitting around twiddling their thumbs. They’re desperate to work.” Even worse, National didn’t realise job coaches were already available in youth services, and Budget 2022 put new funding into programmes like driver training that help get young people ready for work. But in the same week as National’s announcement, the latest Mana in Mahi figures were released – 5091 people had participated in the programme through to June 30 – 25 per cent higher than targeted. Even better, among those on a benefit when they started Mana in Mahi, 90 per cent had not gone back. But perhaps the most problematic claim in their columns was from Simeon Brown MP who told us Labour “throw money at a problem,” and their new policy showed “National will do things differently”. This criticism comes from the party whose tax cuts provide just $2 a week to someone on $40,000 a year while giving $18,000 back to Christopher Luxon and others on high incomes. National certainly isn’t afraid of throwing money at the wealthiest New Zealanders!Labour’s cost of living policy is targeted. With inflation hitting Kiwis at the pump, we’ve extended our fuel excise cuts and half-price public transport. As higher prices affect lower-income households the most, we targeted our cost of living payments to those earning under $70,000 a year. Plus increases to Working for Families, Superannuation and the continuation of our Winter Energy Payment are all designed to help those who need support the most. While National heads back to the drawing board, Labour will continue to deliver our plan with targeted cost of living relief and programmes like Mana in Mahi that gets our rangatahi into work. “I will make sure every part of the community has a voice whether you’re part of the Rainbow community or whether you live in Howick or Titirangi or Greenhithe.
“I will advocate for improved public transport where it makes sense and strongly support the need to prioritise Auckland Transport planning and spending.“Wemust retain neighbourhood parks and believe now more than ever we need green space for future generations.” Stewart promises to promote accountability for council planning and spending so ratepayers’ money is used in the best ways possible.
The experienced east Auckland local body politician received a Queen’s Service Medal for Public Services in 1998.She says she’s lived locally most of her life and her family history within the district goes back more than 100 years. “I am an honest, straight-talking councillor with extensive local government experience. I’m passionate about the heritage of the Howick ward,” says Stewart. “My voting record shows I have consistently voted against issues I believe will have a detrimental impact on the people of Howick.”Stewart says she voted against mayor Phil Goff’s final budget as it involved serious rates increases yet still had a “massive deficit”. She also voted against the introduction of Maori wards in Auckland in 2025.
“On the campaign trail I’ve been out there meeting people, but even as a local councillor, I make myself available a couple of times a month at a library or local churches so people can come and talk to me.

Collins is standing for mayor as an Independent but has been endorsed by the Labour and Green parties. He’s a former chairperson of the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board and was elected as an Auckland ward councillor for Manukau in 2016. Collins is campaigning on a platform that includes tackling climate change, establishing a Youth Governing Board to help young people develop leadership skills, making public transport fare-free and reducing crime by making it easier for communities to keep young people out of gangs.
“If there are sudden changes then we’ve got to organise ourselves so communities know [about them] and if they believe the wrong decision has been made, they’ve got to have a genuine opportunity to say so.“That’s been a failure of the council-controlled organisation model.”

The Times asked Collins for his view on the decision by Auckland Transport to have the Eastern Busway deviate through Burswood rather than run along Ti Rakau Drive between Pakuranga and Botany. He says it’s an example of the council and AT not being good at communicating with residents.

By ZOE GARDEN After months of delays due to Covid-19, the ribbon for the official opening of a local medical centre has been cut by the Associate Minister of Health Dr Ayesha Verrall. It was in 2012 when the planning for Ormiston Medical Centre began. The Times reported in October 2019 that original developer Todd Property had broken ground on a 3000sqm, three-level medical centre at 211 Ormiston Road. And after 18 months of being open, Ormiston Medical Centre has amassed an enrolment of about 8000 patients from the surrounding and local regions. Once speeches were completed and the ribbon was ceremoniously cut by Verrall and Health Improvement Group chairman Mark Conelly, a grand tour was given to the guests, including Verrall, Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, Labour List MP Naisi Chen, and Takanini MP Dr Anae Neru Leavasa. With the rapid population increase of Ormiston, East Health Services and East Care Group have worked together as a joint venture to establish a Health Improvement hub that reflects this increase and localThecharacter.healthhub incorporates a range of services for patients –general practice, pharmacy, dental, eye, radiology, physiotherapy and rehabilitation – to meet the needs of the local community by providing access to them all within one location.Co-CEO Loretta Hansen says their aim is to provide patients with the highest quality of care and the best possible outcomes and patient experience, but at an affordable cost.“At Ormiston, our clinic is open for new patients to enrol and the cost is less than $20 per visit,” Hansen says. “We have a growing patient list across all our sites in east Auckland and people are telling us they appreciate the ease of access we’re providing at Ormiston to coordinated services within an innovative, one-stop shop model. This model is about more than simply ‘co-location’ of GPs with other tenants. We’re building a genuinely coordinated service so our community is not having to navigate around a series of independent services in a range of different locations.”Verrallsays that the co-located services are also a benefit to the providers. “The idea of being colocated, you come to understand other people’s practice more. You can make better referrals because you can follow the paths of your shared patients together.”
Hansen told the Times the location of the centre was chosen because of the projected growth of the region at the time (2012), and of the opportunity of providing an integrated and coordinated service.

Craig RobertsonHowick NOT ARGUING ABOUT A GOD Here’s what I know of a God. Ian George (Times, August 17) can test these biblical hypothesis easily I’m sure – God made the earth in six days. God made Earth the center of the universe. There was Adam and Eve. They had babies and grand children, but no incest occurred. Then God wasn’t happy, brought a flood and had to start again with a different couple. Okay, he sent his son (who wasn’t his son but actually God’s ghost impersonat ing his son), after the cross thing, he decided to never send his son/ him/ghost ever again. Yes Ian, science reveals the bril liance of God and converts like you, who adapts their religion to suit new discoveries (like taking “six days” as meaning “six God days” or 13 billion man years) help stabilise the “institution”, keeps it financially valid and for why – so gays can’t marry and trans people live in hell?

At huge cost, major upheaval to traffic and in the interest of safety to all, the new Panmure bridge extension finally became a reality. At last, buses and cyclists are separated from other vehicu lar traffic and the flow for all is improved. Fantastic. So why then is it deemed okay for buses and cyclists to continue using the old bridge?
Packing people like sardines into high rise high-density housing ticks all the boxes (for the govern ment that is). It is cheaper and more economi cal to provide essential services such as electricity, water, trans port, commuting to shops and schools, land use, the environment (questionable), even to the extent of normalising climate change. The one item they conveniently – and one could even add, surrepti tiously – left out is people, human beings, who have to live in them.

The Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association is hold ing a meet the mayoral candidates meeting at 7pm at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Aratai Drive, Half Moon Bay on Monday September 5. We expect to have all five candi dates hoping to replace outgoing mayor Phil Goff in attendance. Each will be given the opportu nity to address the residents pre sent, promoting as Mayor their vision for Auckland City, in par ticular how they intend to drive Council costs (rates) down. Each candidate will then be asked a range of set questions on key local issues, like the high cost of cycleways versus their current use and inconvenience to other community users; the need for increased ferry services to HMB from the CBD, improved parking at HMB. Importantly, how they would they propose dealing with Auckland Transport in addressing how they can move AT to a com munity solutions-based organisa tion, rather than the creator of the many AT-created problems facing our community today. Our community is multicultural with a mix of pensioners to third generation young families. With the high cost of rates and insurance either driving the elderly out of their homes or mak ing owning a home for young fam ilies with Council driven added costs so forbidding. The key things facing our com munity is a reliable and regu lar transport service offering direct access to the CBD and the Auckland Hospital medical pre cinct, without having to change buses or mode of transport three times to get to the CBD. Improved across-city public transport is essential. Not every one wants to spend several hours going west via the CBD. Improved ferry services to the city is a must, especially on the first sailing and weekends and evenings.

It was a disappointing start for me to wake up early on Sunday morn ing to messages from the public that the #Burns&Young signage had been vandalised. I went live on Facebook with a frustrated and clear message that this is not acceptable behaviour and isn’t representative of the community I work tirelessly for. It’s about the personal costs to campaign, to replace the signs and the time and effort put in to install ing the signs.
On checking with H&E bus company, it is not mandatory for school buses to use the new exten sion. Why would this be? Certainly there are still many cyclists taking it upon themselves to saunter across the old bridge to the anguish of others. If a car were to traverse the new extension no doubt there would be hell to pay. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander.

“The idea was inspired by our 2021 student leadership team who unfortunately never saw it come to fruition due to the dis ruptions created by the Covid-19 lockdown last year,” said head students Thomas Donnell and Leila Alsabak. In the weeks leading up to the competition, House leaders and band members worked hard to select a song and perfect their performances. Each band was then critiqued on the night by a panel of five judges who ranked them based on musicianship, stage presence, and audience engagement. After much deliberation, the MacDonald House band was declared the winner with their rendition of Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. Other performances included Piano Man by Billy Joel, Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder, Smooth by Santana, Classic by MKTO and Why Does Love Do This to Me by The Exponents. A free event, Battle of the Bands was extremely well received by the community, surpassing the organisers’ expectations.
“Assuming current freight costs, Covid-19 related costs, and manu facturing inefficiencies persist through the year, gross margin for the second half would remain broadly similar to the first half.”
Looking forward, the $11.5 bil lion (market capitalisation) com pany said there are ongoing uncertainties around its custom ers’ inventory levels, their staff ing challenges and their current capacity for adopting clinical change.

Howick College’s Battle of the Bands saw six talented bands deliver captivating performances.
The inaugural Howick College Battle of the Bands saw six talented bands, representing each of the school’s six hous es, deliver high-energy per formances to an enthusiastic capacity audience.
Sian Grant, whose address is listed by the NZ Companies Office as being in Flat Bush, pleaded guilty in Auckland District Court last Thursday to five charges of obtaining or attempting to obtain by deception bank loans of about $2.7m. She will reappear for sentencing on October 12. Grant is the second person to plead guilty in the case, following a guilty plea by Viki Cotter on July 8. The remaining defendants, Bryan Martin and Joshua Grant, are next due to appear in court for trial on August 29.
“The atmosphere was some thing we had never before experienced at Howick College with students, parents, and staff dancing around and sing ing their hearts out. Students from each house left with huge smiles on their faces, regardless of their placings in the competi tion,” said Donnell and Alsabak. “We feel tremendously proud that as a team we were able to have this impact on our com munity and we hope this highly successful event will continue for years to come.”
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare dramatically increased production in response to the pandemic. As a result, it sold ariound 10 years’ worth of hardware in two years – to hospitals all around the world.
The event which took place in the Bill Dimery Performing Arts Centre on Friday, August 19, was a student leaders’ initiative to showcase talented young musi cians and encourage friendly inter-house rivalry.
“However, we believe that sec ond half revenue for the 2023 financial year will be higher than in the first half, based on the fol lowing expectations: h hospitalisation rates will reflect pre-Covid-19 seasonal patterns, resulting in higher consumption of hospital consumables in the second half compared to the first half. h improving global supply of CPAP hardware and the recent launch of our new Evora Full face mask will contribute to continued Homecare growth for the remainder of the year.

The company is now target ing constant currency operating expense growth of around 10 per cent for the year. “To deliver on our aspiration of doubling our constant currency revenue every five to six years, we believe it is essential that we con tinue to grow our investment in our R&D activities,” Gradon said. This includes funding clini cal trials for home respiratory support products and advancing the development of new surgical technologies.“Wearealso continuing to invest in growing our sales teams to support the significant hospi tal hardware placements and our expanded offering into anesthe sia,” said Gradon.
“This gives us confidence that we can continue to build on our proven 50-year track record and reach more patients with our res piratory therapies. We continue to be confident executing on our long-term growth opportunities.”
“We also do not know to what extent respiratory therapies will be required during the Northern Hemisphere winter. For those reasons, we are not currently pro viding quantitative revenue or earnings guidance for the full 2023 financial year,” Gradon said.
Managing director and chief executive officer Lewis Gradon said, “As we detailed in our full year results announcement, we dramatically increased produc tion in response to the pandemic. As a result, we sold approximately 10 years’ worth of hardware in two years – to hospitals all around the world.“Our customers also purchased a considerable amount of hospital consumables in preparation for each wave of Covid-19.” Gradon said during the most recent waves of the Omicron vari ant, fewer patients have required hospitalisation and respiratory support.“Webelieve customer stock lev els have been elevated during our first half, which impacts our shortterm sales,” he said. “This does not change the fun damentals of our business or our strategy. Our hospital sales teams are still focused on changing clini cal practice and helping ensure the hardware our customers have purchased is used to benefit a broader range of patients requir ing respiratory support.”
East Tamaki-based Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (FPH) on Friday provided revenue and net profit after-tax guidance for the first half of the 2023 finan cial year ending September 30. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare is a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of products and sys tems for use in acute and chronic respiratory care, surgery and the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. The company’s products are sold in more than 120 countries worldwide.Atcurrent exchange rates, and assuming a continuation of trad ing conditions in the first four months, the company expects operating revenue for the first half of the 2023 financial year to be around $670 million and net profit after tax to be about $85 million to $95m.This would represent an increase in revenue on pre-pan demic levels (1HFY20: $570.9m) and a decline in revenue com pared to the prior comparable period (1HFY22: $900m).

Celebrating maths week Celebrating everything maths was how stu dents across the school at Bucklands Beach Primary recently spent Maths Week 2022. The theme of Maths Week 2022 @BBPS was ‘maths is eve rywhere’ and the students spent the week learning to find maths across the curriculum. As well as taking part in the activities online through the national Maths Week website, they spent time exploring the world of maths. Each day each class displayed a maths challenge in their class room window. The children then had the opportunity to solve as many of these challenges as they wanted. As the week went on, the challenges were created by the students as part of the Maths WeekNamesactivities.ofwinners were drawn daily and announced on the daily notices.Other across the curriculum activities included reading pic ture books related to maths, researching famous mathema ticians and writing about them and creating art work with a maths focus. Some classes took photos of the school environment and then linked maths questions to the photos for others to solve. These included many aspects of maths, for example, looking for patterns and using their meas urement knowledge to observe. Children designed maths prob lem posters and some classes created both board games and maths games for others to play. All of these activities helped foster a positive attitude towards maths and encouraged the chil dren to see that maths is every where if only we look for it.

Recently, we asked our independent apartment residents what matters to them, and over 8o% considered HBH’s not-for-profit status to be important. “Any profit is used by HBH to benefit the Howick community and keep the quality of care and facilities in A1 condition,” says resident Margaret Street. Another benefit of being not-for-profit is the ability to be more flexible. “You’re given an extended time to sell your own home in order to move in,” says another resident. “That really makes a difference.”
