LUXON ATTACKS LABOUR By CHRIS HARROWELL
A
n east Auckland business audience has been given a blunt but optimistic view of New Zealand’s economic and social outlook from the Leader of the Opposition. Botany MP and National Party leader Christopher Luxon was joined by National’s immigration spokesperson, East Coast Bays
MP Erica Stanford, at a breakfast hosted by Business East Tamaki on November 4. Luxon told the audience of more than 200 people at the Howick Club he’s asked several times a day why he left behind a successful business career to enter politics. “The question is understandable because the public is very cynical about politicians and politics. “We promise a lot of stuff and
there’s a lot of spin. It’s long on rhetoric but short on substance.” He said he had two main observations to share from the two years since he became an MP. The first is that he feels “incredibly optimistic about New Zealand”. “I think this is the best country on planet Earth. We have tremendous unrealised potential, economically, socially, environmentally.” Luxon said he sees that because
as National leader he gets to travel around the country each and every week meeting people from community organisations and businesses as well as entrepreneurs. “You realise all of us are in this together and we have this mutual obligation and connectedness as Kiwis to each other. “It gives me tremendous hope we can get ourselves to a much better place.”
His second observation is he feels “we are totally and utterly heading in the wrong direction as a country”. “We have to turn it around very strongly and get it back on track and heading in the right direction. “I’ve done a lot of turnaround jobs in my business career. “The two things you have to focus on are what are the brutal Turn to page 2

From page 1 facts of your reality, as difficult as they might be you’ve got to call them out and face up to them, and then have hope. “Not in some sort of ‘kumbaya’ way, but you’ve got to have hope because you have a plan to get yourself there.” Luxon said National wants to focus its economic policies on improving productivity and creating more wealth for the country and high-wage salaries for New Zealanders. Its social policy will use the social investment approach favoured by former Prime Minister Sir Bill English, he said. That requires using data to target and make an impact on vulnerable people’s lives to change the trajectory they’re on, “rather than all the things that haven’t been working”. Luxon also talked about the environment, the billions the current Government is spending in various sectors, its Three Waters policy, and what he called “huge spin, no delivery”, by Labour. He said New Zealand needs to build a world-class education sys-

Well-known naturopath Pam Sims has died at her home after a short illness. She graduated from Naturopathic College in 1987, practised from her Greenhill Health Centre on Pakuranga Road, and more recently from her home in Howick. In 1987, it was all about pills, potion and lotions, but as the years went by, she realised that diet plays a huge part in our health and that became her focus. But natural health was not her only passion. An opera lover since primary school days, she loved to introduce friends to the magic world of opera. Italy, and all things Italian, also played an important role in her life. She was an enthusiastic member of the Howick Women’s Dinner Club for more than 40 years and Howick Little Theatre. Her other great love was very much canines and, whatever the weather, she could be found on the beach most mornings accompanied by her two dogs. A service will held for her at 1pm on Saturday, November 12 at Howick Funeral Home in Wellington Street.

“They are aggressively targeting the international students New Zealand forgot about or didn’t want.” She said the positive thing with immigration is it doesn’t take long to turn such problems around. “We can pull the right levers to make sure we’re getting the right people in the country. Like the nurses. No one can explain why they’re on a two-year pathway to residency. “The real challenge we’re going to have with immigration in New Zealand is the huge backlog of residency [applications]. “It drove a lot of people away because it takes three or four years to get residency. “The Government is asleep at the wheel and didn’t gear up Immigration NZ to process visas and that’s why there’s a labour shortage. “Everywhere I go in every centre of New Zealand, businesses cannot get staff. We can turn this around but we have to be focused on getting the immigration settings right.”

tem, reduce truancy, and get back to teaching the basics in schools. It also needs to make it easier for businesses to operate, cut regulation and invest more in infrastructure, technology and research and development and in New Zealand’s international connections, he said. Stanford told the audience there’s a sense of frustration, anxiety and stress among business owners around New Zealand due to the lack of skilled migrants entering the country. She said Kiwi businesses did everything asked of them over the past two years and now is the time they should be able to fly, “but they can’t due to the constraints they face in terms of staff”. “Every single country around the world is vying for the same people. There is huge competition there for skilled labour. If you look at other countries, their immigration settings reflect that.” Stanford said Australia is aggressively targeting the workers it needs. “They don’t even require skilled people to have a job in Australia to apply for residence.

Driver responsible for fatal crash imprisoned A
man who caused a fatal road crash in east Auckland in 2019 has been sentenced to prison. A jury earlier this year found Adam Speir, who lived in Pakuranga, guilty of manslaughter for his role in the crash which happened at about 5pm on January 28 in Botany. He was driving his Holden Commodore vehicle over the speed limit on Botany Road heading toward the intersection with Ti Rakau Drive when it collided with another vehicle waiting at a red light. An occupant of the vehicle that Speir’s Holden struck, Zhengwen “Alan” Hu, 50, died from injuries sustained in the crash. The collision involved four vehicles, three of which were stationary at the intersection waiting to turn right. The fourth car collided with the third, in turn shunting all three vehicles forward. Another driver involved in the incident was hospitalised. Police investigated the crash that claimed Hu’s life and charged Speir with

manslaughter. He first appeared in the Manukau District Court on February 5, 2019, with his case subsequently being transferred to the Auckland High Court. The Crown’s case at trial was presented by prosecutor Luke Radich while defence counsel Andrew Speed represented Speir. Following a jury trial in front of Justice Ian Gault, Speir was found guilty of Hu’s manslaughter on June 7. He was remanded in custody and reappeared in the High Court to be sentenced on November 2. Justice Gault said that on the evening prior to the fatal crash, Speir had smoked methamphetamine and did not sleep.
The following morning he smoked cannabis and then went for a walk in a local park. “You began to feel scared and to sense some evil or malevolent energy,” the judge said. “After visiting your grandmother, at about 5pm, you were driving your car south down Botany Road in Botany. You were speeding as you approached the intersection of Botany Road and Ti Rakau Drive. From a distance of at least 2.5km from that intersection, you began driving dangerously.” About 200 metres from the intersection Speir’s vehicle “became temporarily airborne due to your speed”. “You continued approach-
ing the intersection at over 100km/h in a 60km/h zone,” the judge said. “There was a line of cars stopped at the intersection waiting for the lights to change. At a speed estimated by a serious crash investigator to have been between 106km/h and 116km/h, you drove your car into the back of a stationary vehicle, making no attempt to brake or avoid impact. “As a result of the impact, two other cars in front of that vehicle were also propelled forward and sustained substantial damage. The crash was captured on CCTV.” The judge said Hu was sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle Speir’s Holden struck and died soon after impact. Justice Gault said that following the crash, while Speir was still trapped in the Holden, witnesses heard him yelling that he was Jesus Christ and “Jesus will save you”. He sentenced Speir to serve four years and six months’ in prison and disqualified him from driving for two years starting on the date he’s released from prison.

Potaka selected as National’s candidate for Hamilton West by-election Iwi leader Tama Potaka has been selected by local party members as National’s candidate in the Hamilton West by-election. Potaka is currently the chief executive of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whose main marae is Umupuia in Maraetai. He has also worked as a senior advisor to the NZ Super Fund and spent several years as general manager for Hamilton-based Tainui Group Holdings. He has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from Victoria University and a Master of Laws from Columbia University. Aucklandbased Potaka has a home in Hamilton. “I’m honoured to be selected by local party members to fight the Hamilton West by-election as National’s candidate,” said Potaka. “Hamilton West has a unique chance to send a message to the Labour Government before next year’s General Election – New Zealanders need more than good intentions and band-aid solutions. They want and deserve direction, clear action and delivery. “National offers that plan and delivery. Only National and [Opposition leader] Christopher Luxon have a plan to competently manage the economy, deal with inflation and tackle the cost-of-living crisis hitting Hamilton families in the pocket at the checkout and through rapidly rising mortgage interest rates.” Potaka said Labour won the seat by more than 6000 votes in the last election. “But I’m determined to campaign relentlessly on the issues that matter to Hamilton West and turn the seat blue,” he said. “I’m hitting the ground running and will be meeting as many people across Hamilton West as I can so I can earn the right to advocate for them.”

Grocery shop raided By CHRIS HARROWELL
A
n east Auckland wholefoods store has been targeted by offenders for the second time in two months. Bin Inn was one of five businesses at a block of shops in Moore Street broken into in late August. It along with Pizza Club, Fruit World, Awesome Shop and Yume Sushi were all damaged in the incident. Bin Inn has now been targeted again, this time in a ram-raid, at about 4.30am on October 30. The culprits used a vehicle to smash their way into the premises. Security camera footage shows two people, one of whom is wearing a high-visibility vest, enter the store on foot. One of them goes behind the counter and appears to briefly search for something before they both run out of the store. Timber boards filled the gaps created in the ram-raid when the Times visited on Monday morning. Bin Inn store owner Chanchal Deol says he was sleeping when alerted to the break-in on Sunday as he’d

planned to take the day off. He suspects his business may have been broken into again as it’s seen as an “easy target”. “After the last ram-raid we changed our glass to heavy glass so they can’t break it,” Deol says. “But they used their car to smash it. They were after some cash. It’s not about money, it’s the frustration. “The last time it happened we got an email [from police] saying they can’t identify the culprits, even though we gave them video and they took fingerprints.” Deol is considering placing a sign in the store’s window saying no cash is kept
on the premises in an effort to deter thieves. The previous break-ins at the block of stores in Moore Street were carried out just after 3am on August 23. During that incident police responded to reports of a group of offenders breaking into several retail addresses. It’s believed the group arrived at the scene and later fled in a dark SUV vehicle. Large panes of glass were broken at the entries of Pizza Club, Yume Sushi and Bin Inn. The five people who broke into Bin Inn during that previous incident were filmed by its security cameras. One member of the group
appeared to be filming the others with a mobile phone. The store’s till was open and empty and nothing was stolen during the 30 seconds the offenders were inside the store. The previous break-ins drew strong condemnation from local community leaders including Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart. Brown said he hoped the perpetrators would be quickly brought to justice while Stewart said the Government needed to “come down hard” to stop such offending. A police spokesperson says enquiries are ongoing following the commercial burglary at Bin Inn in the early hours of Sunday morning. “Shortly after 4.30am a vehicle was used to gain entry to a store in Moore Street. Two offenders have entered the store but have left empty handed. h Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 105. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

AUCKLAND COUNCIL
Council cracking down on illegal dumping By LAURA KVIGSTAD, Auckland Council reporter – Funded by New Zealand on Air Auckland Council is calling on residents to report illegal dumping with hopes of cracking down on the problem. With over 18,000 reports of illegal dumping every year, the council is urging Aucklanders to continue the fight against illegal dumping. The council operates a 24 hours a day, seven days a week phone line for the public to report illegal dumping and after a report is investigated, it can issue instant fines of up to $400. Serious cases of illegal dumping may also result in offenders being prosecuted under the Litter Act 1979 with a maximum penalty of $30,000. Tyres, mattresses and green waste are among some of the common items Aucklanders might spot illegally dumped in their neighbourhood. With the high cost to the environment from illegal dumping, Senior Waste Advisor Jan Eckersley says Aucklanders need to be responsible with their waste and know how to dispose of it. “People don’t seem to realise that not disposing of waste the right way causes all sorts of environmental issues – green waste kills plants and spreads weeds, food waste attracts vermin, and hazardous waste – oil, chemicals, batteries – contaminates the ground and pollutes the waterways,” Eckersley said. “Residents can report dumping to 0800 NODUMP.

CONE MADNESS
Uxbridge Road near the Howick Library has become the epicenter of Cone Madness. Auckland Transport (AT) is repairing a driveway entrance so has coned off a football length of Uxbridge Road for some strange reason that only AT can understand. I took these photos on Tuesday, November 1. Nobody was working on the site and no machinery was present. I spoke to a man from AT who just happened to be present. He was very nice but was frightened that if he spoke to me, he would lose his job. He was terrified when I took the photo of his AT signwritten car licence plate so I have

blocked it out. I counted 79 cones covering both sides of the road. Mayor Wayne Brown is right about AT. AT have lost the plot or perhaps never had the plot in the first place. It might not be so bad except this is happening everywhere around Auckland and other cities as well. I am willing to bet that somebody is making a ton of money putting out these cones and us ratepayers are paying for it.

businesses ticking over nicely but keep the domestic economy in positive territory but, best of all, many innovative Kiwis learned to run their businesses from home and commute to work on bicycles. And when combined with shipping and airlines no longer filling the air with greenhouse gases, dairying activity productivity improved air quality to the max with cleaner air there for all to breathe, and those with eyes to see, even in Auckland, saw nature rebounded to such an extent the long lost early morning bird chorus re-emerged as from antiquity. Make no mistake the turning point of climate change when its destructive force is irreversible is upon us now.It is naive to think otherwise. Already, 50,000 species are becoming extinct annually. Polar bears now struggle to survive in warmer waters, deforestation continues at pace, consumerism
and trade between nations is out of control and the only solution is lockdowns by all nations halting runaway consumerism in its tracks even if it takes pandemic on pandemic to jolt politicians into action. Sadly, it will take the coming heatwaves, flooding and other catastrophic climate events to invoke any action from world leaders unless, before that, we as one voice demand action in the form of lockdowns. I am not alone in this. Civilisation as we know it will, as previous civilisations have done before, self-destruct.

DEMOCRACY TO DICTATORSHIP?
We have recently had our democratic election for mayor and councillors for the Auckland Council.
These people are our elected representatives and the only ones entitled to sit at the council table to decide the future of Auckland and how our rates money will be spent. They should tell anyone else who turns up to go away as they have no right to be there We have the non-ratepayer elected IMSB tipping the balance of the voting within the council and now the Government of Jacinda Ardern and Nanaia Mahuta want to impose more on us so the left can control more of our rates money in pay-outs. We cannot vote them out and they are only a sucker of ratepayers’ funds. We never wanted them so they are irrelevant and their opinions do not count. Get rid of them. Let us adhere to democratic principles

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
The big 175 week is here! By REV DR RICHARD WAUGH
1
75 years ago this coming week, our Howick/East Auckland community had its settler beginnings with the arrival of the first Fencible families at Waipaparoa/Howick Beach. Eventually, 2463 Fencible family members arrived (702 Fencibles, 547 wives and 1214 children) in what was an early migration scheme not long after the Treaty of Waitangi. At the same time, the Fencible families almost doubled the settler population of infant Auckland! Many of the Fencible families were Irish and were escaping from the famine; others were simply hoping for a better life. About 50 per cent of the Fencibles could not read or write. The voyage from England by sailing ship was not for the faint-hearted with some of the ships making the trip non-stop in a long four-month voyage and with a number of deaths onboard, including children. Some ask what does ‘Fencible’ mean? The word is officially used in the title of ‘The Royal New
Rev Dr Richard Waugh addressing the Howick 175 luncheon on Saturday.
Zealand Fencible Corps’ and comes from the Scottish word ‘defensible’. Of the four Auckland villages settled by Fencible families - Panmure, Onehunga, Otahuhu and Howick, today only Howick remembers and acknowledges its Fencible beginnings. Throughout the district many street names, sport grounds, organisations and places commemorate Fencible history. Certainly, it is a sign of a healthy and informed community when

its local history is well-known; Maori and Pakeha. Do visit the informative Ngai Tai website www.ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz our 175 resources at www.howick175. co.nz and the excellent Howick Historical Village website at www. historicalvillage.org.nz East Auckland is one of the best places in Auckland to live; many coastal delights, amongst the best schools, excellent churches, fine sporting amenities, appealing Howick main street shopping and
nearby big malls and large public parks. With about 50 per cent of our population being migrants, many people can identify with the first settlers arriving 175 years ago. This coming highlight weekend is the culmination of much planning and voluntary work over the past two years. I pay tribute to fellow 175 trustees Morrin Cooper MBE, Jim Donald and Alan La Roche MBE and our hard-working 175 committee (especially secretary Philippa
McGimpsey and heritage co-ordinator Marin Burgess), committee members, sub-committee groups, our 175 ambassadors and many others. We gratefully acknowledge our many sponsors, especially acknowledging the key support of the Howick Local Board, the Polish Museum, Bayleys and Times Newspapers. This weekend we have our free community picnic at Waipaparoa/ Howick Beach, Pop-Up classic Car Display, Fencible families’ plaque unveiling at Fencible Walk Park, and a Civic Service at All Saints with the historic 1847 Church building being open to the public. Do visit the Howick Historical Village on Sunday for a memorable live day with the theme “Settling In” and featuring special Fencible stories from all four early settlements. I would say Howick & districts is Auckland’s most historically conscious place. Rev Dr Richard Waugh is Chairman of the Howick & Districts 175th Anniversary 1847 to 2022 Committee

I
t is my pleasure to acknowledge and extend a warm welcome to everyone attending Howick 175th anniversary luncheon today. The 175th anniversary is an extraordinary milestone and tributes are due to the people – past and present, for so ably contributing to Auckland’s record of achievement. What a great opportunity to celebrate the local history and
the community coming together as one to commemorate. Howick is one of Auckland’s most multicultural wards and
home to people from all over the world. Events such as these celebrate the cultures and traditions that make Auckland so unique. As you take this moment to reflect on your 175 years past and prepare for the future, please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable event and continued success. Yours sincerely, Wayne Brown Mayor of Auckland

HOWICK SCHOOLS WIN BIOSECURITY AWARD Howick Ward schools have won the New Zealand Biosecurity Kura (School) Award. Auckland has the unenviable reputation of being the “weediest city in the world”. Four local boards [see below] have, with specialist advice, identified pest plant threats they want reduced in their areas, including the very invasive moth plant. The Sustainable Schools team within Auckland Council worked with more than 30 schools in Howick and the Pest Free Howick Ward group, for their project Howick Schools’ Moth Plant competition. The innovative Howick schools’ moth plant competition was created to engage and educate local students in biosecurity. Each year the competition reaches early childhood centres, primary, intermediate and secondary stu-
dents, teachers and whanau. Challenging students to become committed to moth plant eradication and the creative approach to biosecurity engagement has produced outstanding results. Students have collected around 148,000 moth plant pods and seedlings so far – achieving positive biosecurity outcomes for not only Howick but also the Otahuhu/ Mangere, Ōtara/Papatoetoe and Orakei local board areas. “This competition is proudly growing a new energetic group of conservation volunteers throughout the local board areas,” organisers said. h For more information, contact the Sustainable Schools team’s Cate Jessep at cate. jessep@aucklandcouncil.govt. nz or on 021 246 7134.

owick Little Theatre’s final production for 2022 is described as a “gentle and lovely” play about the strength of families in the face of unexpected challenges. Penel Keegan directs the theatre’s telling of Canadian playwright Norm Foster’s comedy Hilda’s Yard from November 12 to December 3. It is set in the swinging 1960s and centres on Sam and Hilda Fluck, a couple starting to enjoy having their home to themselves after their adult children have moved out. Their peaceful home “turns to chaos” when their unemployed son and their daughter turn up unannounced. “Hilda and Sam have finally got their empty nest after their two children have left home, or so they think,” Keegan says. “First their son Gary comes back. He’s being chased for a debt. Secondly their daughter Janey comes home as she’s decided she doesn’t like being married because she has to clean the toilets. “Just when you think you’ve got rid of your children, back they come.”
Actors Georgina Malzard, left, and Mark Bishop are among the cast of Howick Little Theatre’s production of the play Hilda’s Yard. Photo supplied Andrew Johnson
The entirety of the story takes part in the Flucks’ backyard over the course of a single day, Keegan says. “There’s no set change and no change of costume, which is great. “There is no great message [in the story] except the love of family for each other, that parents will love their children no matter what they do or how exasperating they are. “They can drive you crazy but at the end of the day you still love them and it’s good they know that.” Keegan says the cast is “absolutely marvellous” to work with. “I have an amazing production co-ordinator in Laurie Mills and I
have a great cast who are working extremely hard to bring this to life. “I’m very pleased with them. I’m thrilled with who I’ve got. “They all seem to get on well which is lovely and which I find very important when I cast a play.” Keegan encourages people to get along to see Hilda’s Yard as it’s a relaxing theatrical way to wind down toward Christmas. “Come and have a laugh and a touch of the warm fuzzies,” she says. “This is a gentle, lovely play and it’s not going to challenge anybody in any way. It’s going to amuse because families are families and no matter where or when they’re set, they all have the same sort of thing going on. “This play is light-hearted and it’s a lovely family comedy for the end of year, a vehicle to make people feel good.”

In addition to this, Room 26 prepared posters and presentations to educate and inform people about the different endangered penguin species in NZ, Owairoa reported in its latest newsletter. The More FM crew arrived at the school to announce that Room 26 had been crowned the winners. For their prize, Room 26 have received a fully-

With both classes clinching wins, NB3 is getting an all-expense paid trip to the Zoo and Room 26 is getting a visit from a Zoo conservation educator.

After hearing about the plight of the blue penguins on Waiheke Island, as there is concern that the species could be made homeless by a marina development, Owairoa Primary School teacher Cass Sealy and the students in Room 26 wanted to work out how they could help blue penguins in the future”. Room 26 started and completed a range of projects in their quest, including 3D models of different penguin species, designing new penguin nests with some having in-built televisions and heaters, and ‘catio’ designs for people to use to keep their cats away from penguins. We have had several enquiries recently relating to wills. In some cases, where a person has died intestate or with an invalid will, challenges and conflict between beneficiaries has resulted. To avoid these conflicts, it is a good idea to have a will and to keep it up-to-date. Your will should include the following kinds of information: • the name of the person or people you have appointed to manage the distribution of your belongings (your estate) the executor and trustee (if applicable) of your will • the name of the person or people you have appointed as guardians for your children (if you have any) • instructions for how you want your money and other assets to be distributed to your partner, children, grandchildren, other
family members, friends, charities etc (taking into consideration any relationship property agreement with your partner or spouse) • the names of the people you would like to receive specific items in your possession. • it should state that it revokes any other wills (in case you’ve made one previously). To be legally valid, your will needs to be in writing, witnessed by two people who are not beneficiaries of the will, signed by the witnesses, in your presence and signed by you (the will maker). There is nothing to stop you writing up your own will, by using a write-your-ownwill kit purchased from a book retailer or by using an online wills service. If your will is more complex, it might be wise to get help from a lawyer. In any case, it is worth spending a small amount to get a lawyer to check the validity
of your will before getting it signed. For more information about wills, have a look at our CAB website, or contact a volunteer at one of our offices. FIRST-TERM MP RELISHING THE ROLE By CHRIS HARROWELL On the day of the 2020 general election Damien Smith went from being a business banker and consultant to a newly elected Member of Parliament for the ACT Party. Smith stood for the party in the Botany electorate as its 10thranked candidate. When ACT received 7.6 per cent of the party vote nationwide it went from having a sole MP, its leader David Seymour, to 10 representatives. “David rang me on the Saturday afternoon of election day,” Smith says. “He said, ‘Damien, the polls are holding and if that’s the case you could be in’.” Smith attended the party’s election night function in Auckland’s CBD unsure what to expect. “They started the count that evening,” he remembers. “I was watching the TV and then all of a sudden I was getting all these slaps on the back saying, ‘you’re in!’. We started work the next morning as a team.” Smith is his party’s spokesperson for arts, culture and heritage; commerce and consumer affairs; land information; racing; revenue; sport and recreation; and state-owned enterprises. He’s also associate spokesperson for finance and serves on Parliament’s finance and expenditure committee. Prior to entering politics he had a successful career in banking

and worked as a consultant and independent company director. The Times recently asked him how he’s finding life as a firstterm MP and about his hopes and expectations as the 2023 general election draws closer. Smith says ACT opposes the Labour Government’s Three Waters reforms, its recently announced proposal to tax farmers’ greenhouse gas emissions, and its policy to reduce New Zealand’s prison population, which he says “is not putting the victim at the centre of things”. “Our Three Strikes law put away the baddest of the bad. “If those people are walking the streets again, or living next door to you, or they committed a rape and they’re living down the street now, that’s not how society should work. People are starting
to feel less safe.” Smith says gangs are growing in strength and recruiting more youth members. “Some of these robberies in the malls are pretty professional and slick, but with the dairies, gangs send in underage kids to do a ram-raid because they know they can’t be prosecuted. “I spend a lot of time with dairy owners and they’re pulling their hair out about how to protect themselves.” He says the Labour Government is dividing rather than uniting Kiwis. “I think they’ve lost the country now and their agenda is so radical. David [Seymour] and the rest of our team do a leader’s tour when [Parliamentary] recesses happen. People are angry and I’ve never seen people so engaged politically so far from an election cycle.” Smith says he loves being an MP and he’s keen to stand for ACT again at next year’s general election. “David is the only one directly elected, in Epsom,” he says. “The rest of us are out there trying to obtain party votes from around the country. We believe this [Botany] is a great place for us to get our message to and it seems to be getting traction. “We know there’s a mood for change out there so we have a high level of confidence, but we aren’t taking anything for granted.”

COMMUNITY
Senior Citizens Club ‘worth fighting for’ By ZOE GARDEN
W
ith cancellations and delays from the pandemic, a decline in membership and the brief closure of the clubroom, Howick Senior Citizens Club (HSCC) desperately needs new life breathed into its walls. Like many other local and national clubs, HSCC was significantly affected by Covid-19, temporarily stopping its weekly meetings until it was deemed safe to reopen. A further delay was caused by the club’s premises flooding. Due to this, and various other reasons, HSCC president Ray Creedy concludes that “we have lost quite a lot of members”. The club meets every Thursday from 11am-3pm at the Te Whare Ora (Senior Citizens Hall) in Uxbridge to converse, play bingo and have a cuppa. Creedy told the Times that the aim and vision of HSCC is to provide the people who are “getting on” some place to go, something to do and keep the mind and body active.“There’s a great need for socialisation. When you get older, socialising and companionship is very important. A lot of friendships have been formed over the time, outside of the activities of the club. Everyone is welcome.” Creedy hopes to find somebody, or somebodies, to join the HSCC committee with the same values and

beliefs that “we’ve got”, which is “to have a place where people can go to socialise”. “Not everybody has the time nor desire to do what we do, unfortunately, but everything is done for the benefits of the members. It’s all voluntary.” The HSCC committee has four key members – the president, a position which Creedy has held for 12 years, the treasurer, secretary and the organiser. The treasurer and organiser, who also runs the kitchen, is currently conducted by a husbandand-wife team who are stepping down from their roles and need to be replaced. The club is also looking to fill the roles of president and secretary. “We want it to carry on because it’s worth fighting for,” Creedy says. “I can see the benefits.” h For more information, contact Creedy on 0226572277.

PERFORMANCE
School’s kapa group shines in cultural competition Pakuranga College’s talented kapa haka group has showcased its skills in a prestigious cultural competition. The school says the group, called Te Tai o Pakuranga, is on a mission to bring east Auckland’s Maori culture to the fore. It’s started by competing in the prestigious Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga event, staged at Westlake Boys High School on October 29, for the first time. The contest brings together the country’s best kapa haka kura with the college up against schools ranked
second and third nationally within their Auckland heat. Michael Long, Pakuranga College’s 2021 head student and its kapa haka tutor, says: “East Auckland isn’t traditionally well-known for its Maori culture, so we wanted to participate primarily to showcase that culture. “We also wanted to challenge ourselves against the best kapa haka kura so we can experience that level of excellence and bring that inspiration back to our school.” The group’s 28 performers practised 15 hours a week
for months in the lead-up to the competition, where they performed seven numbers in stunning new korowai by Korowai Designs. Te Tai o Pakuranga performed to a high level, winning the Best Dressed School and Best Attitude awards in the Auckland heat. The school’s co-lead kapa haka tutor, Jacob Ripley, says it was a huge occasion for everyone involved. “There were some tears before taking the stage. That feeling we’d actually done it and we were here as the first ropu from Pakuranga College
after 12 months of planning and intense preparation. “I’m incredibly proud of our rangatahi and seeing them enjoy the performance definitely helped settle the nerves.” Pakuranga College head student and kapa haka female leader Kayla Ngaropo says: “The experience was invaluable for our students and I can’t wait to see how they apply it to kapa haka next year. “We were especially pleased to win the award for Best Attitude. That absolutely shows the mana this ropu has.”
Softball lovers can experience some of the best softball players in New Zealand faceoff in addition to a number one-ranked international team and reigning world champions, the Argentina men’s national team, this weekend. The premier men’s and women’s tournaments run from November 11-13 at Meadowlands Reserve. Argentina will be joining the Brad Croawell Tournament in preparation for the WBSC 2022 Men’s Softball World Cup starting in Auckland on November 26. The Bev Smith Premier Women’s Tournament and The Brad Croawell Premier Men’s Tournament are sure to be a treat this year with the Argentina men’s national team in the Brad Croawell tournament and the New Zealand Junior White Sox in the Bev Smith Tournament. The tournaments are named after two Howick Softball club members. Smith died from breast cancer in 2008 aged 47 and Croawell died in 2018 aged 24 due to a neuromuscular condition called Friedreich’s ataxia. These tournaments are a pinnacle event in the softball calendar each year where they spread awareness and raise funds for both Breast Cancer Research and FARA NZ [Freidreich Ataxia Research Association New Zealand]. “This is an amazing opportunity for our New Zealand male and female players to see and face some of the best international players in the world,” says Howick Softball Club’s Stefanie Smith. There will be New Zealand Black Sox and White Sox players participating in the local club teams which will provide some great competition for the junior White Sox Women’s Team and Argentina’s men’s team. The must-see game of the tournament includes the Argentina vs Accent Insurance Howick at 5pm on Saturday, November 12. Both the men’s and women’s finals will be at 1.15pm on Sunday, November 13. To view the draw for the tournaments, head to the Howick Softball website www. howicksoftball.co.nz.
