embers of the Howick Local Board were divided over a plan to raise money by selling a number of Auckland Councilowned properties in East Auckland. The board’s members took part in an at times contentious debate on the issue during their business meeting last month which was conducted online due to Covid-19 restrictions. The agenda for the board’s August business meeting says the council recently passed an emergency budget that requires $224 million to be realised from asset recycling. Thirteen properties were identified in the board’s area that are no longer required for a current or future public work requirement. The recommendation put before the board was to vote on the properties’ disposal as a block, but several members objected to that. Board member Mike Turinsky said he didn’t support the sale of the council property at 2R Ti Rakau Drive. “We need to think long-term and disposal of this one is short-term thinking,” he said. “Given the strategic location of the property and the future development of Pakuranga Plaza, and the potential benefit of the AMETI Project, I believe this property should be retained.” Board member David Collings said he agreed with Turinsky. Board chairwoman Adele White disagreed, saying, “I believe this is one we could easily dispose of”. Turinsky said he also opposed the proposed sale of the property at 116R Reeves Road in Pakuranga, as did Collings. ➤ Turn to page 3

he long running Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme has historically been the starting point for a number of innovative new business ideas. One of this year’s entries, from a group of Pakuranga College students, is certainly no exception. Their business SLICNZ’s aim is to educate young people about the importance of New Zealand Sign Language. As the group’s CEO, Ned Verrall, points out, “New Zealand has three national languages – Te Reo Maori, English and New Zealand Sign Language. “Out of the 880,000 people who are deaf or hard of hearing within New Zealand, roughly 20,000 know how to use NZSL. This is around just 2 per cent of the deaf or hard of hearing population. We recognise that this is a problem, so we decided to try and come up with something that would help.” The result is a pack of 52 standard playing cards, but with a twist. There are 13 designs included in the pack, with each design showing a character doing an NZSL sign, and the relevant translation in English below. The colourful cards have been illustrated by local artist and former Pakuranga College student Shervonne Grierson and can be used to play a variety of games. Aimed at young people, Verrall says, “We are really hoping that they will generate

n my view, this election ultimately all boils down to the economy – how it affects you and who will best lead us through the next three years. Now, some folks’ eyes will immediately glaze over and that’s because politicians and commentators often talk about the economy in very dry and abstract terms. However, we all want to see more investment in delivering higher quality and more accessible social and public services, yet none of that can happen if we don’t have an economy that grows and generates the income to do so. The economy I experience daily is actually all about people and their livelihoods and over the last 10 months I’ve visited hundreds of small businesses all across Botany. These business owners eat, sleep and live their businesses 24/7. They care deeply about their employees and have been incredibly challenged through our lockdown periods. In times of maximum uncertainty, these businesses need a set of consistent government policies that gives them the confidence to invest in expanding their businesses and hiring staff. The reality is tens of thousands of New Zealanders have joined the unemployment benefit line this year, and there is no doubt 2021 will also be very tough. We owe those Kiwis the very best chance to get a job.

Christopher Luxon having a chat with the owner of Columbus Coffee, Botany Town Centre. Photo supplied

National’s Economic and Fiscal plan will put more money in Kiwis’ pockets through a 16-month tax stimulus package, that will put more than $3000, or nearly $50 a week, in the pocket of the average earner. And it will also stimulate business investment and lift confidence by allowing businesses to immediately deduct new investments up to $150,000 and double depreciation rates for investment over $150,000 in plant, equipment and machinery. During an economic crisis, it’s right to increase government spending and higher levels of debt are required in the short-term. However, we also need a responsible plan to reduce debt over time so future generations, our children and grandchildren, are not burdened with debt levels that require higher taxes or reduced public services. They must see a genuine legacy

from that borrowing in repaired schools, new hospitals and better transport networks. Our Economic and Fiscal Plan will boost investment in core public services each and every year with a focus on health and education. Ultimately, however, we will prioritise lifting the outcomes and accountability of government spending and not just the volume – something the current Labour Government has mostly abandoned. I believe New Zealand has a great future ahead of us but the next few years are absolutely critical. Responsible economic management has been a hallmark of successive National governments and with the right economic policy, we can restore our prosperity. It’s your economy, your future, and your choice on October 17. Christopher Luxon is National Party candidate for Botany

White said she felt the board was “missing something” about the purpose of selling the properties. “When we went into this we were very upset and very concerned that we had to potentially sell properties in our area and I can understand why we felt like this,” she said. “However, there is a need to sell these properties and a need to do it with regard to the emergency budget and these properties are already listed for potential asset recycling.” The board eventually voted to endorse the disposal of six of the properties, being 2R Ti Rakau Drive, 116R Reeves Road, 2R Bucklands Beach Road, 80 Vincent Street, 20 (part) Uxbridge Road, and 65 Haddington Drive, with caveats attached to several of them. The board did not endorse the sale of four properties, being 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, 111R Golfland Drive and 31 Aspiring Avenue/17R Hilltop Road/ legal road in Clover Park. Three other properties were removed from consideration due to further advice from council staff. The properties’ potential disposal went before the council’s finance and performance committee on September 17. It voted to dispose of all 10 properties the local board discussed at its August business meeting.

➤ From page 1 Regarding the property at 80 Vincent Street, Howick, which is a public car park, Turinsky said one of the proposed key outcomes of the board’s plan is a prosperous local economy supporting business growth and opportunity. “Based on that thinking, about the benefits or economic stability, I do not believe it’s prudent to dispose of a car park to the detriment of local ratepayers and businesses in the area.” Board member Bob Wichman said he agreed with Turinsky. The board’s members then discussed the potential disposal of a property at 20 (part) Uxbridge Road in Howick, before member Bo Burns responded to Turinsky’s earlier point about a prosperous local economy. “Actually a car park doesn’t bring a prosperous economy,” she said. “A new business does. So when these sites are sold for new businesses to be built we all must agree that we are spoilt in Howick compared to Parnell or other areas that have very little parking or have to pay for parking in some cases. “It’s great to have disability access but they’re not going to be sold and kept as car parks. That doesn’t generate money for the local area. “It will be generating new money and new businesses to our area.”

Amazing Interiors – beautiful village addition

H

oorah! Well-known local Carol Hobson is back in Howick Village bringing her beautiful design store Amazing Interiors into the heart of Picton Street – so exciting for retail and shoppers! Many will remember Carol’s first village store. As an owner of the former Biggie Best franchise in Cook Street, she gave customers an eclectic mix of wonderful fabrics and homewares. After selling Biggie Best, Carol opened Amazing Interiors in Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga. From there she has operated a home staging, interior design and general home décor service, combined with regular workshops, all of which have won many return clients. “Now, it will all be happening in Picton Street where Amazing Interiors will showcase stunning products for every aspect of the home,” Carol says. “Naturally, we will offer our well-established home staging and design service and have a work room where we will continue to host workshops and design seminars.” While loyal clients will know what to expect – amazing interiors of course, newcomers to Carol’s winning formula will be just… amazed! Very different from anything

Howick has presently, the store presents a myriad of options – “seeing furniture, soft furnishings and accessories fully set up is an easy way to help customers visualise how such pieces will sit in their

own homes” Carol says. “We are all about generating ideas and, for added assistance we offer an accessible interior design service which goes the extra mile.” Shoppers will find a wealth of

quality décor items from occasional furniture and large pieces through to cushions, artworks, pots, curtain fabrics, flowers and so much more. Carol is looking to include chalk paints in the mix shortly,

and of course her displays change constantly. Homeowners preparing to sell can see how staging can work for them – with focus put on transforming spaces into amazing living concepts. Carol has outfitted many homes listed on the market, her clever décor skills helping to secure sales. Always happy to make in-home visits to suggest or source items which will complete that special look, Carol’s eye for ‘the right fit’ has long impressed her substantial customer base. It was in response to their requests that she felt the time was right for Amazing Interiors to have a village presence – “that’s where so many clients originated and where locals regularly shop.” Carol believes. With the opening of the new store, the Ben Lomond site will become an outlet centre open to the public with clearance sales from time to time, but “the real magic will be right here in the heart of Howick” says Carol. Fabricated from a mixture of marine grade, structural RHS aluminium and polycarbonate roofing providing 99 per cent UV protection, it’s easy to see why so many people choose the extremely durable Outsider system for their home. Its frame can be powder coated in your colour of choice and when an Outsider awning is purchased from Shades Direct, clients can expect the same dedicated service from start to finish, dealing with the same person from the point of sale right through to installation in the home. If an Outsider or Clearspan Outsider awning doesn’t fit in with your home’s décor, you’re in luck because Shades Direct offers plenty of other outdoor shade solutions in a variety of

ant to know the secrets and stories of the Buckland family’s 116 years at Highwic, here’s your chance. As part of the Auckland Heritage Festival, there will be a guided tour of the Bucklands at Highwic on Sunday, September 27 and Saturday, October 10 from 2pm-3pm. Once the home of the prominent Buckland family, Highwic, built in 1862, is one of New Zealand’s finest examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture. This guided tour will allow you to go beyondthe-ropes and explore

more than 10 rooms of this rambling mansion with a Highwic Heritage Guide. The guide will share secrets of the Buckland family as well as show a range of newly-uncovered artefacts which were discovered during a recent archaeological dig and provide clues as to how the Buckland family lived at Highwic. Alfred Buckland, who had 21 children, bought the farm in 1861 for 2500 pounds. Buckland was a successful businessman. The beach was named after him. At one stage he owned land in the area and also owned

After its initial outbreak with a cluster of pneumonia cases at a seafood, poultry and live wildlife market in Wuhan City, China, Covid-19 has spread rapidly across the globe. The virus has hammered economies worldwide and brought devastation to many. On 16 September Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a church with thousands of members in various countries, held a global online prayer service to pray for the victims of the coronavirus and their families, healthcare workers, government officials and for the complete eradication of and cure for Covid-19. The virtual prayer service was livestreamed to the entire congregation with more than 200,000 members in countries all over the world participating, including New Zealand, the USA, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. In keeping with social distancing, health protocols and protecting its members from possible exposure to the coronavirus, Shincheonji arranged the virtual gathering for members to pray together in safety and set an example for others. Prayers were mainly for the healing of those infected with the virus, for overworked healthcare work-

ers who are struggling to fight Covid-19, and for people in economic distress in the wake of the pandemic. The overwhelming online participation from its members worldwide showed the desire and urgency to end this virus and for healing and restoration in communities. The Chairman of Shincheonji Church Mr Manhee Lee suggested this online virtual gathering and said that all believers will continue to pray at the church’s worship services until the complete eradication of the coronavirus. At least 1,700 of the church’s South Korean-based congregation have donated their blood plasma for research around an effective treatment. Convalescent plasma has also showed promise as therapy for Covid-19 and is believed to have reduced the severity of symptoms in critical patients. “In order to defeat Covid-19, we need to embrace, love, and unite,” as global citizens, the church said. “We wanted to do all we can as believers by praying for the people working to prevent the spread of the virus and healthcare workers who are working at the frontlines of this battle against Covid-19 and we believe that God will answer our earnest prayers.”

30 years as friends, 30 years training and working alongside each other as early childhood teachers and seven years in business together has resulted in a combined passion for the children in their care at Early Connections Childcare in Beachlands. When Vicki and Sarah set up the centre over three years ago, their emphasis on creating a centre that felt like a home with beautiful resources, delicious and nutritious meals, real grass, an amazing sandpit and outdoor area, washing hanging on the line … laughter, music, paint, baking and so much more was evident and still is each day. When you walk into the centre you get that feeling of a ‘home away from home’. Vicki and Sarah, along with the wonderful team of teachers, work closely with the children and families to ensure that they feel welcome, supported, loved and nurtured. The three learning spaces provide age appropriate care and learning opportunities … with combined fun outside in the amazing back garden. Attachment theory guides the team in supporting children to settle into the centre and it is from this secure base and sense of belonging that the learning happens. The space dedicated to the youngest in the centre is full of joy. The babies love their daily routine including songs and stories, both indoor and outdoor play and exploration as well as fun activities. The older children enjoy two spaces as they grow with a consistent and familiar team in each room. The busy 2-3-year olds love exploring, stories, songs, dancing, arts and delicious baking! They enjoy a mixture of quiet moments and busy fun times too.

New Zealand patients suffering from IBD have not had any new medications since 2009, a reader says. Photo Nutraingredients

WHY WE CAN’T WAIT

I am writing in response to Margaret Scott’s letter that was published on September 8. It is great that her husband found something that has been able to keep his Crohns Disease at bay but there is no actual cure for it. Many people who have found medications that work, still suffer from its symptoms daily. I also don’t know who writes the headlines for the letters that are published, but IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which includes Crohn’s Disease) are very different illnesses. Danielle Barber’s story was shared on One News as Crohns and Colitis Charitable Trust NZ (CCNZ) have launched their #wecantwait petition. This petition will be pre-

sented to Pharmac as there are only two funded biological medications in New Zealand. New Zealand has one of the world’s highest rates of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) with more than 20,000 people in NZ suffering from IBD. This is comparable to the rates of diabetes and arthritis here. Yet patients have not had any new medications since 2009. This means that when our bodies stop responding to the normal dose of one of these biological medications, doctors try changing the dosage before changing medications in the hope that this will work and to stay away from surgery. Once the use of both of these drugs have run their course, our only option is surgery. The surgery that is done is often to create a stoma, which is where an opening is made in the abdomen and the bowel or small intestine is sewn to

the outside of the abdomen and the person has to wear a bag to catch the output. The ongoing cost of this is often more than the cost of these new medications CCNZ are wanting Pharmac to fund. Ustekinumab and Vedolizummab are the medications CCNZ are seeking funding on. Ustekinumab was approved by Medsafe in early 2018, has been given high priority by Pharmac’s gastroenterology sub-committee, but has not been funded by Pharmac. Vedolizumab is currently awaiting Medsafe registration. These are both common medications in many developed countries including UK, Canada, Australia, Spain and Israel. Please have a look at the Crohn’s and Colitis NZ Facebook page, our hashtag #wecantwait on Facebook and to sign the petition - www. wecantwait.nz.

EUTHANASIA IS A CHOICE Instead of all you Kim Jong Un choosing how we must die, how about we make our own individual choice on the matter? I would say all those who vote NO, should NEVER be allowed to change their minds and all those who chose to make a future choice, can chose when they are ready.

WHY DID ROSS WITHDRAW? What a big relief it is for National that Jami-Lee Ross is not contesting the Botany seat. If he were to contest it, a lot of people would vote for him thinking he is still the National representative. This would reduce the National vote by a big number, enough to allow Labour to win. I would love to know just what persuaded him to withdraw, bearing in mind who benefits now that he is not contesting.

Chris Wordsworth Cockle Bay

MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT We are soon facing elections in this country with important issues to decide. Do we go down the track of socialism where decisions are forced on you by puppet politians who lean on global influencers at the UN?

Or do we demand our own sovereignty, our own democracy, where freedoms of speech, freedom of religion and human rights are paramount where the rule of law is for the people by the people? It is a very fragile balance because dictators have emerged in both scenarios. What importance do we place on the family, on marriage and on raising our children in safe learning environments? What should we do about the use of drugs and those addicted? How far should we go in abolishing the outrageous abortion laws? What about the euthanasia bill and the cannabis laws? On top of that, we have to give power to our elected representatives, some of whom should never, ever be near the levers of power. Check out your local rep and make sure about his or her suitability. Find out how they voted in the past on issues that concern you. What is their non-revealed agenda? Your vote and your decisions matter more than ever before. This pandemic has helped the drift into control by a global-socialist cartel. The alternate is a rule by our own somewhat chaotic creative free market economy called a democracy. Let your vote be a force for good and not for excessive political control.

Virgin Australia Supercars Championship

Heimgartner shines making Supercars history By STEFAN BARTHOLOMAEUS

H

aving been part of Supercars history in Sunday’s opening race at The Bend (South Australia), there was no love lost between Kiwis Shane van Gisbergen and Andre Heimgartner in the second encounter. Van Gisbergen, Heimgartner (from Dannemora), Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard took the top four placings in Race 26, marking the first Kiwi top-four sweep in the championship’s history. Heimgartner’s hopes of a second podium from as many starts in Race 27 were dashed on the opening lap when an inside pass on van Gisbergen left the Mustang in a spin. Contact from van Gisbergen’s right-front to Heimgartner’s left-rear turned the NED Mustang left as Heimgartner attempted to take sixth place down the inside of the right-hander.

Van Gisbergen was dealt a 15-second penalty for the contact and later apologised to Heimgartner, which was little consolation to the 25-year-old. “It’s like anyone else, we don’t treat each other any differently, we just have more of a history, racing in New Zealand and stuff like that,” said Heimgartner. “I’m pretty disappointed, it was a pretty silly thing to do that early on in the race. “He said sorry, which doesn’t get my spot back, but at the end of the day it is what it is. We just had to come back from that and did a good job.” Heimgartner rejoined from the spin at the back of the field and carved his way up to sixth, before dropping to seventh as his tyres faded late. Still, it completed a strong weekend for Kelly Racing, which had struggled with its still new Ford Mustangs across the consecutive events in Darwin and Townsville.

“It’s really a big relief,” said Heimgartner of the return to form, which included a fourth-place finish on Saturday and top 10 qualifying results for all three races. “We’ve been searching a lot, the last round at Townsville was definitely tough. “I think we qualified 20th in one of the races and were just scratching our heads. “So to come here with this speed, all three races almost played out as we wanted, apart from the last one. “But a great pitstop by the boys in that last one and then we managed to come up to seventh, so I couldn’t be much happier considering what happened.” Teammate Rick Kelly also showed speed throughout the weekend, taking two sixths and an eighth from the three races. Heimgartner now sits 13th in the points standings with two events remaining, three places clear of 2006 champion Kelly.
