Public meeting on East Care

eople upset at the loss of east Auckland’s only overnight medical service are invited to express their views at a public meeting on the issue.

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Botany MP Christopher Luxon

are campaigning to have East Care Accident and Medical’s overnight service reinstated.

The 11pm-7am service in Botany Road operated for more than 20 years.

Counties Manukau District Health Board funded it from 2014-2018.

East Care funded it since then but shut it down in December last year.

Brown and Luxon are hosting a public meeting on the issue on March 31 with Counties Manukau District Health Board chief executive Margie Apa and chairman Mark Gosche.

They’ll listen to people’s concerns and participate in a discussion about the future of healthcare in east Auckland.

Brown says the meeting follows work he and Luxon have done in the past three months to have the 24/7 service reinstated.

JIM AND EVELYN CHOY HAVE BEEN IN LOVE FOR 70 YEARS

n Sunday morning, they thought they were going out for coffee with their daughter Andrea, and were surprised when neighbours from the street in Northpark dropped in to wish them well, says Jim who celebrated his 90th birthday this month.

Jim was equally baffled when they received a congratulatory card from the Queen.

“I thought someone was pulling a fast one on us and had done a rather good job with it,” he laughs.

It was only after they received congratulatory cards from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Governor General Patsy Reddy and a letter from Botany MP Christopher Luxon on their milestone anniversary that it dawned on him that both his daughter Andrea and son Garry had asked him earlier for their mar-

We spent two weeks in Sydney and then sailed to New Zealand by trans-Tasman liner Awatea,” one of the finest and fastest ships of its size in the world at the outbreak of the Second World War.

Evelyn says it was the first wedding she attended.

Jim and Evelyn moved to Auckland from Lower Hutt in 1998 after years of running their own business, including a produce shop, fish and chips takeaway and a lending library in Wainuiomata—“till television killed people’s love for books,” says Jim.

ACCIDENT

Vehicle crashes into hair salon

A

motorist was injured when two vehicles collided, sending one crashing into a hair salon, on a busy east Auckland road.

A Counties Manukau Police spokesperson says the crash happened near the intersection of Gossamer Drive and Ussher Place in Pakuranga just after 7am on March 18.

One of the vehicles crashed into DaVinci Hair Design, at a block of shops which also includes an Indian restaurant and a dairy.

The crash left a hole in the side of the hair salon, with the vehicle wedged between the business and a large tree in front of it.

Emergency services responded to the incident.

Police say the driver of one of the vehicles was taken to Middlemore Hospital and was reported to be in a critical condition.

“There were no reports of any occupant in the second vehicle sustaining serious injuries,” the spokesperson says.

A section of Gossamer Road between the intersections with Portadown Avenue and Larne Avenue was closed while police and members of the serious crash investigation unit examined the scene.

Debris from the collision littered the footpath and road when the Times visited the scene.

One of the damaged vehicles, a Toyota Corolla sedan, was placed onto a tow truck in Ussher Place.

Cordons were still in place in

Gossamer Drive at 11.30am on Thursday.

“The serious crash unit is still examining the scene, with an investigation into the circumstances to follow,” the spokesperson says.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area following the crash, which drew numerous comments on social media about the effect the resulting gridlock had on people’s morning commutes.

Several people trying to get from east Auckland to the city centre say they gave up.

Later that morning police were called to a serious crash involving a passenger bus and a small truck in Flat Bush.

Police say the two vehicles collided at the intersection of Ormiston Road and Murphys Road just before 11am.

“The truck driver involved has sustained serious injuries and is being transported to Middlemore Hospital.

“There were a small number of passengers aboard the bus at the time of the crash.

“We are aware that a small number of passengers have sustained minor injuries and they are being assessed at the scene.”

The serious crash investigation unit and the police’s commercial vehicle safety team were notified of the crash.

Auckland Transport spokesman Mark Hannan told the Times the bus involved in the incident was operating a service for AT Metro at the time.

“There were 10 passengers on board and one was taken to hospital. The bus driver was injured and is being supported by the bus operator.”

approach those who display systemic racism and challenge their thinking. Lily won a copy of Dr Anae’s book ‘Polynesian Panthers’. The discussion was filmed by TVNZ’s Sunday and the episode aired on Sunday March 21.

Popular Sunnyhills public park set to be sold by council

A

n east Auckland public reserve popular with families, children, and their pets may soon be on the chopping block.

Passionate Sunnyhills residents are behind a campaign to stop Auckland Council from selling their local neighbourhood reserve at 9R Fortyfoot Lane.

It may soon go up for sale along with public green spaces at 111R Golfland Drive, 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, and part of the site of a former fuel station at 2R Ti Rakau Drive.

A lengthy legal process must be completed before that can happen.

Frank Lombard has lived adjacent to the green space in Fortyfoot Lane since 2007.

He says he was “shocked” to read, in the Times late last year, of the council’s desire to sell it.

“The perception is parks are there for community use and there’s an expectation they’ll always be there.

You don’t expect the council to decide one day it’s short of cash and it’s going to sell the reserve. We use it as a place for get-togethers and the street Christmas party.

“That’s been going on since the

early 1990s.”

Lombard says residents exercise their dogs at the reserve “all the time”.

The next nearest public green space is in The Boulevard, which is a much busier road and it’s therefore not as safe for children to play at, he says.

“There’s no pedestrian cross-

ing and people won’t let primary school aged kids go to that park by themselves.”

Several sections in Fortyfoot Lane have been used for the development of intensified housing in recent years. Lombard says he expects if the public reserve is sold it will also be used for housing.

“Someone isn’t going to buy it to

build a single house on there.

“We aren’t against intensification, but green space is a really valuable place for people to connect.”

Fellow resident Sue Goldwater says the reserve is there for residents and their children and grandchildren.

“The people who gifted it to the council, that was their vision, that

it would be there forever.

“People with dogs come from further afield because it’s a safe place to let them run around and they aren’t going to get onto the main road.”

She says it’s also a popular place for people who own pets other than dogs. “Local children go there after school with their rabbit. They’re out there most nights.

Other kids climb the trees and walk through the park to go to school. At Christmas little kids are there doing ballet.

“Intensification isn’t going to stop and we don’t want to stop it, in fact it’s important we have intensification so people can be housed in this city. As Opposition Spokesperson for Police and Corrections, I have a particular passion for law and order and making sure we in Parliament are doing everything we can to keep you and your family safe.

One of my concerns is around how the Government is too focused on reducing the prison population, rather than reducing crime and victimisations in the community.

Just recently it has come to light that the Government’s Te Pae Oranga initiative is taking preventing imprisonment to a new low with police being given the discretion to refer a range of serious offences to an Iwi Community Panel, instead of before our justice system.

The list of serious crimes that qualify for such an approach includes stabbing

Simeon Brown a police officer, attempting to abduct a child, supplying psychoactive drugs to a minor and possessing child exploitation images.

I don’t think many New Zealanders would consider an attempt to abduct children out of the country a low-level offence.

Certainly, no parent would.

I think we can all agree these are crimes that need to be taken seriously with the appropriate consequences under the law.

But under this Government, police now have the discretion to refer someone who commits serious crimes like to these to a community panel, rather than before the court where they can

face the full force of the law, including potential jail time.

Alternative resolution and rehabilitation are an important option to have at our disposal for crimes that really are minor, but this is going too far.

Not only does it let offenders off easy, but it makes our communities less safe, as police are increasingly lacking the ability to do their job and hold criminals accountable.

We shouldn’t be surprised that this is the way things are going with a Government intent on reducing the prison population at all costs.

It has to stop and National will continue to push for appropriate consequences for those who commit serious crimes.

Get set for Howick Rotary’s Fun Run A

record number of local schools have indicated their participation in Rotary’s Fun Walk and Run on Sunday, March 28.

Organised by Rotary Club of Howick, the popular family fun day has a glorious start and finish at the Stockade Hill. All proceeds go to the Howick Volunteer Coastguard.

The organisers have assembled a number of magnificent spot prizes, donated by local businesses.

Crafters and visitors felt a good vibe when Classy Crafts Indoor Market reopened for 2021 on March 13 at the Picton Centre in Howick.

Stocks had been replenished over the holiday period and there was a great deal of laughter and catching-up to be done and with market covenor Robyn Brown’s delicious homemade shortbread.

Former Howick library building set to be sold

I

t’s a large and derelict eyesore in the heart of an east Auckland shopping precinct and its future will finally be decided.

The former Howick Library building at 16 Fencible Drive, which is owned by Auckland Council, has sat empty since 2011.

It’s among the properties the council’s finance and performance committee voted in September last year to sell.

Urban regeneration agency Panuku Development Auckland is responsible for managing council buildings and land.

Panuku assets and delivery general manager Marian Webb says the organisation is working through the early stages of readying the property for sale.

Initial investigations are completed and determined the surrounding land will remain as car parking and therefore won’t surrendered to support the sale, she says.

“As soon as the property is ready to be sold it will be done so through an open and transparent process.”

According to a council document, it covers 648 square metres

and was acquired by the former Howick Borough Council in 1975 for use as a public hall and library.

The property was sold in 2001 and on-sold in 2005.

It was repurchased by the former Manukau City Council under mortgagee sale in 2008.

The property is not fit for leasing, the document says, while a second council document describes the building as structurally unsound.

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, whose electorate encompasses

Howick village, recently wrote to Panuku chief executive David Rankin to ask for an update on the planned sale.

“This property is in a seriously dilapidated state and has been for many years,” Brown wrote.

“The local community are rightly upset it continues to sit there unused and lacking maintenance and it has become a real eyesore within the Howick Village.”

Brown’s letter asks when Panuku intends to sell the property and how the organisation

will ensure the building is demolished “rather than left in its current state by a private owner”.

Brown told the Times the council has “neglected Howick” by allowing the building to deteriorate.

“It is in such a state of disrepair that it could cost millions to fix due to various issues, such as asbestos.

“Their position to sell it is the right one but the council should have sold it many years ago, or done something else with it.”

Brown says the council and Howick Local Board’s Howick Village Centre Plan planning document “will have something to say” about what happens to the site in future.

“Panuku needs to ensure when it is sold it is demolished,” he says of the building.

“It needs to allow for expressions of interest, and if there is interest from people in the local community, it needs to be an open and transparent process.

That is important. It cannot be left in its current state because it has deteriorated so much and [what it’s replaced with] needs to fit in with the village, whether that’s apartments, or shops, or commercial.”

He points out east Auckland is the only part of the city without local afterhours or 24/7 care.

“People are travelling a long way to Middlemore and often these people are in quite a lot of pain and discomfort.”

Brown and Luxon launched a petition calling for the 24-7 service to be reinstated that was signed by more than 10,000 people and presented to Apa and the DHB’s board.

Auckland’s newest shopping centre to open Todd Property Group managing director Evan Davies says that despite Covid-19-related challenges over the past 12-months, including the recent Alert Level 3 lockdowns in Auckland, it will open the doors to Ormiston Town Centre on Thursday [March 25] to support the surrounding community, and the tenants who have worked hard to be ready for that date.

“Opening a retail development in a worldwide pandemic is not for the faint-hearted but as we expect Covid-19related lockdowns and restrictions could continue for some time yet, we have made the decision to be brave, bold and to uphold our promise to open on time,” says Davies.

Ormiston Town Centre is a development partnership between Todd Property and Auckland Council.

Part of a 19-hectare development of Auckland Council land around Ormiston Road, Ormiston Town Centre is a $250 million-plus development that has been under construction since October 2018.

The suburb of Ormiston has been master-planned in consultation with Auckland Council as a fully functioning, self-contained community.

The opening of the centre was delayed from October 2020 to March 25, 2021 due to construction delays caused by Covid19-related restrictions.

Ormiston is just 4.5 kilometres from the southern motorway (exit 449), 5 kilometres from Manukau City Centre, and 25km from the Auckland CBD.

The festivities on the day will start around 8am with Auckland Mayor Phil Goff in attendance and local iwi Ngai Tai kicking off formalites.

Stage 1 of Ormiston Town Centre was completed in 2015 and Stage 2 will open on Thursday.

“Our major tenants – New World, Hoyts, The Warehouse, Noel Leeming and CityFitness – are strong and committed, and we have an exciting food and beverage offering for a growing community, who are currently lacking in retail and social infrastructure,” says Davies.

I feel that the authorities are prepared to trash our country as long as it makes money. Vast templelike sprawling shopping centres , endless multi-million dollar petrol stations (6 along the Pakuranga

But then I believe we are short of land for housing.

Recently, a very pleasant view from Hawthorn Dene Reserve across the water to the Coromandel, a view that has always belonged to everyone, has been lost forever.

Now it’s just a vast blank wall . A minor point, I know, but insidious.

Who gave permission for that to be taken from us?

GO BUS NO GO

On Tuesday, March 9, I waited at Bus stop number 6186 by the Priestley Drive shops for the 735 Go Bus due at 9.03am as I planned to catch the 9.15am ferry into the city.

The bus arrived at 9.10am, the time at which it should have arrived at Half Moon Bay in order for me to catch the ferry. I said I wanted to catch that ferry but the driver didn’t reply.

He dawdled part of the way along Sunderlands Road. I fumed. At Half Moon Bay I tagged off the bus and ran very fast down the concourse (I’m a runner) but half-way down I saw the ferry pull away. It was 9.16am. I ran back and spoke to the driver who informed me that I was wrong about the time he was due at Half Moon Bay which made me angry.

He didn’t apologise. I have subse-

quently (and consequently) twice contacted Go Bus through their website about this but have had no response.

In the past, the lateness of a Go Bus in my area has not been too much of a problem but this time it was because I needed to be in town by 10am.

I didn’t get there because there was no other bus service available at that time so I had to walk back home.

Clearly Go Bus does not rate customer satisfaction high on their list of priorities for customer services.

I wish Howick and Eastern Buses had won this route in the tendering process.

One despairs at the destruction of mature native trees in Canal Road, Avondale and acknowledge the efforts of those who opposed this mindlessness.

One sees nature being destroyed in Indonesia, the Amazon, Africa and elsewhere due to man’s greed.

We are no better in Auckland as wall-to-wall Legoland gathers pace.

Where were Phil Goff and the councillors, who are paid to find balanced solutions here?

We are philistines with no understanding of enviro-sustainability, no regard for bird life, the role of trees providing shade, beauty, absorbing CO2 and how to have development balanced with protection of nature. Parks must not be sacrificed for development.

Will there be a tree left in east Auckland 20 years hence, given the current rate of removal?

Your correspondent, Robert Bartholomew, clearly does not welcome alternative viewpoints.

Because I lived in Pukekohe and he has not, I provided some background to the situation of itinerant Maori workers. Now, he accuses me being an apologist for racial segregation (Times, February 16.)

That some people (usually, but not exclusively, Pakeha) in Pukekohe harboured racist sentiments towards Maori is not in dispute. Where I part company with Mr Bartholomew is in condemning the entire town and saying it was typical of New Zealand.

Your correspondent has a history of crusading journalism. In this instance, he has chosen his thesis and sought only information which supports it. As such, he acts as court prosecutor and the defence case does not concern him. My suggestion was that by casting his net a little wider, he could find reasons (not excuses) for racist sentiment in Pukekohe during the period he mentions (1920-1960). This would make his work more balanced and more scholarly.

Mr Bartholomew sees the Pukekohe Maori School (Primary, 1952) as ‘enforced separation in education’. It had a special character for good reasons based on attendance issues and health but it cannot be used as typical of NZ. He writes ‘Beginning in 1952, Pukekohe

became the site of the only racially-segregated Maori school in the history of New Zealand.’ Notice the word ‘only’. He thus undermines his own argument that racial segregation was typical of New Zealand as a whole.

We don’t usually apply the terms ‘racial segregation’ or ‘the segregation era’ to NZ as it implies policy or official sanction. But Mr Bartholomew tries, nevertheless, with the Pukekohe Maori School.

He also reports a bus driver telling a Maori girl to give up her seat to a Pakeha woman. In those days we were taught to give up our seat for an adult as a matter of courtesy.

If it was company policy with a racial bias, let’s see the document.

For him to say the situation in Pukekohe was/is ‘just as sinister as South Africa’s apartheid or southern USA’s slavery’ is completely over the top.

Elsewhere, he says that Maori are now ‘no better than indentured labourers and almost slaves on their own land’. This is a polemic and does not belong in a serious discourse.

I do not seek to minimise the difficulties and prejudice Maori experienced at Pukekohe. Mr Bartholomew and I can agree on one thing: that racism is anathema.

It condemns everybody in a certain group by virtue of their birth.

As an enlightened society, we resist racism and insist (with varying degrees of success) on treating peo-

ple as individuals. This can have its problems as we all have our cultural preferences. Where the racist errs is to confuse race with culture.

Your correspondent might consider this point.

My plea was for Mr Bartholomew to broaden his list of interviewees.

Did he interview any teachers of the time?

Did he interview students who were happy to attend the Pukekohe Maori School?

Did he interview any landlords who did not rent to Maori (important cultural factors at work here)?

Did he speak to any taxi drivers who refused Maori fairs?

In my time, ‘50s-early ‘60s, Pukekohe taxis were well patronised by Maori. I cannot speak for all taxi drivers, nor for those of a previous era, but my cousin was a taxi owner/driver (mid ‘50s-’60) and she didn’t refuse Maori.

She ended up giving a few free rides, I might add, but not through choice.

As for schools, I can show him photographs which go back many years. We sat in mixed-race classes, used the same toilets, swam in the same pool and had cross-cultural relationships.

Mr Bartholomew has set out to expose racism in Pukekohe (and NZ) and selected his subjects accordingly. His investigation could do with more balance and analysis.

HELP AND ADVICE NEEDED If anyone reading this letter has recently returned to New Zealand from Glasgow, Scotland, I am looking for some advice.

My son, who is in Glasgow at the moment, is booked (managed isolation and flights) to return to New Zealand mid-April.

The biggest problem is finding a reliable place in Glasgow to get the required (by Emirates and the New Zealand Government) Covid test done. As Scotland is in lockdown, it’s only possible to look online.

The places he has contacted say they provide the ‘Fit to Fly’ documentation but want to send him the results by email – this is not acceptable to Emirates or the New Zealand Government.

It must be a printed certificate, which is stamped by the testing clinic and signed by a doctor.

Some of the online places even want to send him a self-testing kit which is completely unacceptable.

As you can imagine, it’s a very worrying and stressful situation for us all. If anyone else has had this problem and managed to overcome it, I would greatly appreciate any words of advice.

‘Native schools’ for Howick?

As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017

I

t is with some concern that our former residents of Howick district did not observe the Treaty of Waitangi and give Maori the equal education given to pakeha.

There were three blocks of land set aside “for the benefit of the Native race” many years ago near Howick.

1) At Whitford, 121 acres was set aside and administered by the St Stephens Trust Board, who managed St Stephen’s School at Parnell School for Maori. For a short period, 16 pupils, living nearby, attended – but with financial difficulties it closed.

It was then leased for farming activities.

2) Doctor John Bacot, surgeon who lived at Bleak House, 1848 to 1859, gave 155 acres in Macleans Road “for the education of the native race”.

Instead of building a school (until recently) it was leased to Pakuranga farmers by the Grammar Schools Board. Part of this land is now Macleans College land; the rest is Macleans Reserve. This land had nothing to do with the Maclean family. Their land was on the southern side of

3) Charles Roberts built a two storeyed homestead on his farm which is now part of Saint Kentigern College boarding establishment. He gave 53 acres

for Maori education, but it was leased for farming initially for £31 pounds a year for 21 years from August 1861. As farms were developed, the access road was called Grammar School Road which is now at the back of Saint Kentigern College, as rent was paid to the Grammar Schools Board.

Historically, the role of Maori Schools was complicated due to the War in the Waikato and the associated tensions. Maori parents were eager for their children to be educated.

Many schools taught the basic reading English, arithmetic, spelling and geography. Ngai Tai supported the Government and remained on friendly terms with local farmers.

The Rev Vicesimus Lush recorded that missionary Rev John Wilson, who lived in Cascades Road, and Rev Robert Burrows, were considering setting up a “Native Training School” at Howick in 1854. The idea was lost.

Looking at old photographs of this area, there were always Maori included in the classes. Due to European diseases such as influenza, measles and scarlet fever, Maori often died as they had no acquired immunity, hence the tapu in early times.

The Maori population was small in this part of Auckland. For many years, Maori education was kept separate from Pakeha education.

After the 1877 Education Act, education became compulsory, secular (no religious instruction)

ANNIVERSARY and free. Education may still not be free, but many improvements are obvious.

At last, all literature is not based on English writers such as Shakespeare, Burns or Dickens.

There are excellent New Zealand writers and books available to schools.

There was a directive that corporal punishments (the cane or leather strap) should be avoided in Maori schools. Eventually this became mandatory for all New Zealand schools and in the community. Severe punishments did not assist learning.

In earlier years Maori pupils were punished for using Te Reo but, fortunately, it is now taught in many schools.

Ayrlies fair a big hit M

ore than 1000 plant lovers attended the opening day of the two-day Ayrlies Plant Fair in Whitford on Friday.

Visitors enjoyed the garden and could walk the 6 hectares of internationally-acclaimed garden and 16 hectares of wetlands.

A variety of plants from many of New Zealand’s top growers were on sale and proved very popular.

Ayrlies, recognised as one of the world’s most significant gardens, is often termed ‘a living work of art’ and has been 57 years in the making. Creator Bev McConnell, now 90 years-old, is

the archetypal sustainable gardener and kept busy on the day.

She has combined form, colour and often-unexpected plant combinations that delight visitors from around the world.

The garden, held in a charitable trust with the McConnell family the key sponsor, needs to find ways to increase funding so that it too is sustainable into the future.

The plant fair is a key fundraising event and opportunity for anyone interested in buying plants not usually available, or just having a fun day out in a special haven.

Uninsured in a car accident?

An all-too-common call to CAB relates to car insurance and accidents where our client is uninsured.

This is where things get murky and outcomes may not seem fair.

If you are involved in an accident and the other party accepts responsibility for it, then they are liable for any damage done to your vehicle. If they have motor vehicle insurance then their policy may cover any damage done to your vehicle.

If this is the case then when the other party puts a claim in to their insurer to cover damage to their own vehicle, they should include information about your vehicle -

including whether it was also damaged. If they admit in the claim that they were at fault, then their insurer will normally cover the cost of repairs to your vehicle.

In some situations, the other driver’s insurer will not pay to repair the damage to your vehicle, even though the other driver was at fault. For example, if the other driver was in breach of their licence conditions, was driving while over the alcohol limits, or had failed to disclose material information to their insurer when they started or renewed their policy (this is called duty of disclosure).

If the insurer declines the other driver’s claim (e.g., because they were in breach of their licence conditions), then you can take the insurer to the Disputes Tribunal.

If, however the other party does not accept responsibility the other driver might just be following the advice of their insurance company about what to do if they have a car accident. The best thing you can do is to: ➤ write down the name, address and phone number of any other drivers involved, along with their vehicle registration number and the name of their insurance

company ➤ give these same details about yourself to the other driver ➤ write down the name, address and phone number of any witnesses to the accident ➤ the time and place of the accident ➤ the weather and road conditions ➤ the speed at which you were travelling ➤ your estimate of the speed of the other vehicles involved You can make a claim to the Disputes Tribunal if there is disagreement over which driver was at fault.

Mo’unga masterclass H

aving bamboozled in his half-hour at first-five in the Chiefs dramatic 35-29 Super Rugby Aotearoa win against the Hurricanes, it’s astonishing to learn coach Clayton McMillan won’t start Damian McKenzie there against the Blues at Hamilton on Saturday night.

With Beauden Barrett in Japan, crackerjack McKenzie is the only first-five in the country who can provide the razzle dazzle Crusader Richie Mo’unga does.

That showed in Wellington over the weekend when McKenzie and No 8 Luke Jacobson were inspirational in the Chiefs magnificent comeback after trailing 26-7 at halftime.

Coach McMillan liked what Bryn Gatland brought to the No 10 jersey in the first two games of the season against the Crusaders and Highlanders despite losing both.

He also points out Kaleb Trask has ability. True, but neither can produce the lightning McKenzie thrust that incorporates clever off-loads, smart dummies and a sharp sidestep and swerve.

Furthermore, replacement fullback Chase Tiatia was quick to show his attacking class with a smart 57th minute try.

Saturday’s win allowed the Chiefs to break a 11-game losing streak and give them some confidence against a giant Blues team whose bulk and indiscipline failed to tame the mighty Crusaders in Sunday’s Eden Park clash.

ountain Raiders BMX Club based at Lloyd Elsmore Park are celebrating four new national champions following a successful outing this month.

A total of 43 Mountain Raiders club members headed down to Rotorua to compete in the pinnacle event of New Zealand’s BMX season, the national championships.

They, and around 500 others, raced over two days.

“Incredibly, we came home with four new national champions,” said the club’s Kimberley Hunter.

Madeleine Hunter (2020 Howick Local Board Junior Sportswoman of the Year) won her third national title in a row.

“Then we had three members of one family all bring home the NZ1 ranking – Steph Hoek and her two sons Lucas Matene and Jai Matene,” said Hunter.

“It’s a pretty remarkable achievement for them as individuals and for us as a club.”

Hunter is 11 and she won the 12 year girls class. She’s in year 7 at Baradene College.

Hoek won the 35+ female cruiser class while Jai, 7, won the

Lucas, 11, won the 11 year boys class. He is in year 7 at Farm Cove Intermediate.

The Saint Kentigern College Girls Premier Touch Team has won the Auckland Premier Competition.

With the draw format changing with 2 weeks of no play, the girls had to win all 3 games in the final round.

They beat Baradene 15-0, Botany 10-0 and then higher ranked Westlake 5-4 to place in the top position and win the Auckland Championships.

Meanwhile the college’s triathletes secured top placings at the Auckland Triathlon last Tuesday at Point England.
