Historic Brookby villa estate on the market

estled in the Brookby Valley is a charming 19th century colonial villa with an extraordinary story to tell.

It was once owned by an English captain; used as a casino by World War II American servicemen; and a film set for a fantasy Netflix show.

crew members, abandoned ship, leaving passengers to perish. But the Jeddah didn’t sink. In fact, it arrived at the nearest port not long after the captain himself to much astonishment.

It was to be more than 100 years before another captain would desert his sinking ship and passengers while at sea. Captain Francesco Schettino abandoned the Concordia cruise liner off the Italian island of Giglio in 2012.

When at sea, before moving to a new location, check your vessel’s anchor and anchor chain, as well as any other gear, like fishing lines or dive equipment, before moving to a new location.

If you bring up any seaweed (on your anchor or hook), bag it and bin it. That is, remove it and securely bag it or contain it and take it ashore for safe disposal on land, for example in a rubbish bin or compost.

If this can’t be done, people are asked to return it to the waters it came from.

There will already be exotic caulerpa below and putting it back in this area will not pose a significant risk of spread.

RUBBISH BINS ARE BEING REMOVED TO SAVE $10M

acklash is growing against efforts to remove more than 150 rubbish bins from public parks and reserves in the local community in an effort to save almost $10 million.

Auckland Council is removing a large number, but not all, of the bins from across the city.

Numerous discussions on the issue have taken place on local community Facebook pages with the general feeling being it will make it harder for people to dispose of waste including dog faeces.

“People will just dump their rubbish or not pick up dog mess at all,” one person said.

Another noted numerous bins have been removed from their community in Bucklands Beach.

“We’ve had multiple bins removed from ... shops, waterfront, picnic areas. [It’s] just

another cost-cutting move that will cost more in the long run.”

A third local resident recently posted on a community Facebook page about the issue, saying the council had removed the bin from Highbrook Park.

“People are just leaving their bags of dog s*** where the bin was.

“So now people who used to pick up their dog s*** won’t bother because no one wants to drive home with a bag of stinking s*** in their car.

“They want people to pick up after themselves, whether it’s dog s*** or just general rubbish, but won’t provide the means necessary to get rid of it.”

Council general manager parks and community facilities

Taryn Crewe says the organisation has about 10,000 bins across the region.

A large portion of them are underutilised and contain little to no rubbish when being emptied, she says.

“Accordingly, the council has undertaken a rationalisation exercise, as part of the annual budget savings target, aiming for a 30 per cent reduction in the number of bins currently located across the region.

“In the Howick Local Board area, 175 rubbish bins have been identified for removal, while 412 bins will remain.”

Crewe says the council will only remove those that have historically low use and are near other bins, so it doesn’t envisage a “material increase” in loose litter as a result.

“We estimate the bin optimisation project will result in potential savings of $9.5 million over

the next eight financial years.”

Howick Local Board chairperson Damian Light says the board wasn’t involved in the approval process but was asked for informal feedback on the proposed removal list.

The board appreciates some locals are concerned about the potential impact of increased littering or remaining bins becoming overfull, he says.

“If there’s sufficient demand in certain locations, bins can be returned to areas that need them.

“We’ve been told the best way for the public to request a bin’s return is to log a complaint by phoning on 09 301 0101 or online at https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/report-problem/ formal-complaint/.”

Light says the dumping of rubbish in public places is illegal and should be reported by phoning 0800 663 867.

Insurer reveals NZ’s most stolen vehicles  By CHRIS HARROWELL

ast Auckland residents considering buying a Toyota Aqua car may want to think again.

AMI Insurance has named its list of the most stolen cars across the country for 2023 and the popular Aqua holds the unwanted title of the hottest target for car thieves for the second year running.

The insurance company says its new data reported almost 17,000 vehicle theft claims last year.

AMI executive general manager claims Wayne Tippet says the company recorded a 43 per cent spike in vehicle theft claims in 2022 and “unprecedented theft rates” are still sitting high as 2023 becomes the second highest year for vehicle thefts over the past five years.

“We are seeing a consistent similarity in the price of commonly stolen vehicles too, usually no more than $5000 in value.

“These seemingly costfriendly cars are typically 10 years or older.”

Toyota’s Aqua model has been named the country’s most stolen vehicle for 2023.

The Corolla has made a significant climb from the country’s eighth most stolen car in 2022 to third in 2023.

A relative of a Times staff member joined the growing ranks of the country’s car theft victims when her beloved Mazda Demio hatchback was stolen just metres from the Chinatown complex in Burswood on June 30 last year.

The Dannemora senior citizen had gone to Chinatown for lunch with a friend to celebrate her birthday.

When they returned to the car park they found her Mazda gone.

The theft was reported to police and an insurance claim filed.

Thanks to a social media post, the vehicle was found later the same day dumped in a street in Farm Cove.

Its ignition barrel had been damaged and rubbish including food and clothing was left strewn throughout its interior. The car was written-off.

Tippet says comparing AMI’s year-to-year data, the new car theft claims indicate thieves are still looking for quick takes.

“Cars without advanced security features such as keyless ignitions, immobilisers, or alarms, or are parked where a swift getaway is possible, have a higher risk of being stolen.”

AMI data also shows vehicle theft rates peak between 10pm and 5am, with theft increasing after dark.

Plaza development still a go

he re-development of Pakuranga Plaza is still going ahead, the shopping centre’s owners have confirmed.

Plans released in November 2015 promised a development that would see the site transformed into an urban village with projected investment at the time of $500 million.

In 2015 it was announced the proposed development would include more than 900 dwellings, a community hub with new library, civic plaza and public open spaces, 10,000m2 of commercial space, 60,000m2 of retail, services, food and beverage entertainment outlets, a hotel, a conference centre and improved pedestrian environment.

Owners Singapore-based Sedar Properties, which has been investing in and developing real estate in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand since the late 80s, told the Times that many of the mixed-use components are still relevant, however, this has been redesigned in the latest consent submission.

Timelines, Sedar said, are out of their control.

“Whilst we won’t be able to reveal the plans just yet, you can be assured that we’re very much looking forward to progressing on this journey.

“The redevelopment has taken us longer than anticipated and although we are disappointed to lose Farmers [which closed in October], the regeneration of the town centre will require us to lose tenants along the way to allow for a staged development.”

Meanwhile, the former Farmers site has been replaced with homeware products store Panda Mart which sells everything from beauty and health products to home décor, tech electronics to educational toys for kids.

Panda Mart said the 6000 square metre-store will rival established offerings like Kmart.

Exemption ending for EVs and plugin hybrid vehicles P

eople who drive light electric vehicles (EVs) and plugin hybrids will have to pay road-user charges (RUC) for them from April 1.

Transport Minister and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown recently announced the coalition Government was ending the exemption on such vehicles.

“Petrol tax and distance-based RUC are paid by road users to contribute to the costs of maintaining our roads, but EVs and plug-in hybrids have been exempted from RUC,” he says.

“

This exemption was always intended to end when EVs hit around two per cent of the light vehicle fleet and we’re now at that point.”

Brown says plug-in hybrids are powered by electricity and petrol and have had to pay petrol tax, but not to the same level as petrol equivalent vehicles.

To ensure plug-in hybrids avoid paying twice through both fuel excise duty and RUCs, these vehicles will pay a reduced rate RUC, he says.

“The previous National Government exempted EVs from paying RUC to encourage their uptake.

“This exemption was always intended to end when EVs hit around two per cent of the light

vehicle fleet and we’re now at that point.

“With the increasing uptake of EVs and plug-in hybrids being brought into the RUC system, this means these vehicles will now be contributing toward the maintenance and upkeep of our roading system like all other road users and will support the Government’s priority of building and maintaining our roading network.”

Owners of light EVs and plug-in hybrids will need to buy a RUC licence from April 1.

There will be a two-month transition period to allow time for people to get registered in the RUC system without being penalised for unpaid RUC.

LOCAL BOARD DISPENSES $32K OF FUNDING

The Howick Local Board has voted to provide more than $30,000 of funding to community organisations in east Auckland.

At its final business meeting of 2023 in December the board had requests from 34 applicants for a total of $76,484 of funding from its Howick Quick Response fund. The board voted to disperse $32,259 from the fund.

The largest amount granted to individual applicants was for $3000, which went to Howick Sailing Club toward the cost of a pair of tractor tyres; LifeKidz Trust for sensory games and operations manager wages; Mission Heights Junior College for kapa haka uniforms; and the New Zealand Multicultural Arts Association for venue hire.

The cost of taking a bus and other forms of public transport in Auckland is going up from February 4.

stickers, toner and paper, and street signs.

Turned down also were Pakuranga Tennis Club, which applied for $2000 toward the cost of tennis balls; and Youthline Auckland Charitable Trust, which wanted $2,500 to fund telecommunication costs for text and calls.

The amount of money public transport users pay to get around the city is about to increase.

Auckland Transport (AT) says it reviews its fares against changes in operating costs and available budget each year.

It takes into account the cost of living and the investment needed to maintain and improve public transport services.

To help the agency meet its “significant and sustained” operating cost increases, fares will rise from February 4.

AT director public transport and active modes, Stacey van der Putten, says: “This year we are having to increase fares to keep up with the rising cost of running and maintaining Auckland’s public transport network.

“In recent years we’ve been mindful of the impacts Covid-19 and extreme weather has had on our customers.

“We deferred last year’s fare increase until April and in 2022 there was no increase at all. But operating costs have spiked dramatically over this period, driven by high inflation and staff shortages.

“Adjusting fares to raise revenue is unfortunately one of the steps AT needs to take to cover these higher costs.”

Van der Putten says a weighted average increase of 6.2 per cent will be implemented across AT’s fare structure.

For standard adult fares, it works out to be an increase of between $0.06 and $0.40 per journey on buses, trains and ferries.

“We’re committed to keeping public transport an affordable option for all Aucklanders, so the increase for longer journeys is only 1-4 per cent.

Shorter journeys on Auckland’s public transport will still remain some of the most affordable in the world when compared with many other international cities,” she says.

Despite the fare increase, patronage growth is forecast to continue and the agency says that will generate more revenue to help AT meet its operating costs.

That growth will be accelerated by the introduction of contactless payments for fares via debit/ credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay later this year, which will make public transport more accessible for those without a HOP card.

“Aucklanders can also look forward to simpler fares and more affordable public transport for frequent users following an independent review of AT’s fare structure,” the agency says.

“The review will explore initiatives such as a weekly fare cap and its findings are expected in the coming months.”

Meanwhile, Transport Minister and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown recently announced the coalition Government has cancelled the Auckland Light Rail project.

The previous Labour Government had spent more than $200 million on planning for the project without having laid a metre of track, he says.

“Auckland Light Rail would have cost taxpayers $15 billion, with advice showing the cost could increase to $29.2 billion.

“The Government is committed to delivering infrastructure that will reduce congestion, boost productivity, and create a more reliable and resilient transport network that drives economic growth.”

First NZ team to qualify for junior world synchro champs T

itanium, a junior synchronised ice skating team mostly from the Howick/ Pakuranga area, will attend ISU Junior World Synchronised Championships being held in Switzerland in March.

The team, all members of Howick-based Allegro Ice Dance Club and coached by Tracy Hipkiss, gained the qualifying score at the New Zealand Nationals in Dunedin in October and will represent New Zealand at the world championships.

Titanium is the first team in New Zealand to achieve the qualifying score to attend junior world champs.

The team is made up of 17 skaters and was formed in 2017.

As well as their training of up to 10 hours a week, the team is fundraising to help get them to Switzerland by running sausage sizzles and will also be hosting a bingo night on February 10.

De Vaal named in World Cross Country Championships team Christian de Vaal of Pakuranga Athletic Club has been named by Athletics NZ in a final team of 18 athletes comprising a full complement of six athletes in each of men’s and women’s U20 races to compete at the 2024 World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade in March.

An initial team of eight athletes was announced on December 21 with a further 11 athletes added to the New Zealand team for the endurance test in the Serbian capital. Jamie Mora, who was selected in the men’s under-20 team as part of the initial squad, has now withdrawn.

New Zealand will boast five athletes in the senior women’s race including Annika Pfitzinger (Athletics Nelson) who will follow her mum, Christine Pfitzinger as a New Zealand World Cross Country Championships representative.

Annika, who claimed a silver medal at the 2023 New Zealand Cross Country Championships, is set to make her New Zealand debut – a huge honour for the 31-year-old athlete who battled chronic fatigue syndrome for several years.

First diagnosed with the condition in 2018 she found the simple act of climbing off the couch a desperate struggle for a period.

Blinding headaches and fogginess were also common, however after returning to serious training in 2022 she has been rewarded by making her New Zealand international debut.

Christian de Vaal of Pakuranga Athletic Club is in the men’s U20 squad for the 2024 World Cross Country Championships; the final team announcement for the 2024 World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on March 30 includes a New Zealand debut for Annika Pfitzinger in the senior women’s race.

Pfitzinger has battled several years of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

“To make my first New Zealand team at the age of 31 after so many years sidelined with chronic fatigue syndrome means the world to me,” said Annika whose mother, Christine competed at four World Cross Country Championships in the 1980s.

“My goal has always been to represent New Zealand on the international stage and while that looked very unlikely for a long time, I am so proud of how my team and I have persevered over the past few years to regain

my health and get back to competing at a high level again.”

Also featuring as part of the senior women’s team is Katherine Camp (Te Awamutu), the national 10,000m champion who competed in the senior women’s race at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst. Australian-based Kiwi Caitlin McQuilken-Bell, who placed fourth at the 2023 New Zealand Cross Country Championships, is also selected.

Zealand Cross Country champion and recently minted national 10,000m champion Anneke Arlidge – whose mother Glenys Kroon also competed for New Zealand at the World Cross Country Championships – and UK-based Georgie Grgec who is set for her New Zealand debut. The 24-year-old finished fifth at the 2023 New Zealand Cross Country Championships and last month posted a big 10,000m PB of 29:14.92 at the Zatopek meet in Melbourne. Little will be making his first appearance for New Zealand.

New Zealand boast full teams in both the men’s and women’s U20 races presenting a mouthwatering opportunity to gain international experience against the best in the world.

Elliott Pugh (Athletics Tauranga) wins selection for a second successive World Cross Country Championships having placed an impressive 39th in the men’s U20 race at the 2023 edition in Bathurst. Pugh, the 2023 national U18 1500m and 3000m silver medallist, is joined on the team by national U20 steeplechase silver medallist Lorcan Rabbitte (VUW) and Az Cabusao of Te Puke Harriers, who ran a sub-32-minute time at the Timaru Ten last October.

Also earning their ticket for Serbia are national U20 road mile champion Poppy Martin (Lake City AC), national U18 3000m champion Siena Mackley (Queenstown AC) and Ava Sutherland of Olympic Harriers, the national U18 road silver medallist.

Catherine Lund (Ariki) and Boh Ritchie (Hamilton City Hawks), who finished 27th and 41st respectively, in the U20 race at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships, were announced in the initial selection and will also line up in Belgrade.

Athletics NZ Out of Stadia co-ordinator John Bowden said: “We are delighted to announce a final team of 18 for the 2024 World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, and we are particularly pleased to have full teams in both the men’s and women’s races.

“The World Cross is regarded as the toughest endurance race in the world given the quality of athletes competing it will provide crucial experience for all our athletes. I can’t wait to see how they all perform.”

Recycling rules to change in Auckland on February 1 A

uckland residents may need to brush up on their recycling etiquette as new national standards come into effect on February 1.

Everyone across the country is set to have identical guidelines for what items can and cannot be placed in kerbside recycling bins. Previously, it had depended on where you lived as to what items were accepted in local council collections.

Richard Hills, chair of Auckland Council’s Planning, Environment and Parks Committee, is encouraging Aucklanders to familiarise themselves with the new recycling guidelines.

“By only putting in the right recyclable items into our bins, we are helping increase the quality of materials collected for recycling, which in turn reduces disposal costs,” said Hills.

“We want to protect our natural environment and recycle more resources back into the economy. Reducing the use of single use items is the best way to reduce waste, following that, it is recycling right. This change is

another important step along the path to Auckland’s goal of zero waste by 2040.”

In 2023, Auckland Council updated its website and Binny smartphone app with what could and could not go into Auckland’s kerbside recycling bins in line with the Ministry for the Environment’s new national standards.

Vehicle theft leaves victim injured Police are investigating an incident that saw an east Auckland resident assaulted while trying to stop his vehicle from being stolen.

A police spokesperson says officers were notified of a robbery in Bacot Place,

Howick, at about 6.50am on January 13. One person was injured and taken to hospital.

“The offender drove the stolen vehicle into a parked vehicle further up the road and then fled on foot.

“Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances.”

Multi-cultural festival a hit The Rotary Club of Auckland Airport recently held its annual multi-cultural festival in Bucklands Beach.

Founder president, Guy Slocum said this popular event was born out of the division created by differing opinions surrounding the Covid injections.

“As we came out of the period of restrictions it became obvious to us that our communities needed healing by being brought together within a common cause,” he said.

“That idea quickly grew to include a desire to bring different ethnicities and their cultures together in a spirit of friendship, knowledge and understanding.

“So, at the event, we invited a large number of ethnicities to come to a social evening for good conversation and a multitude of performances from different cultures.

POLICE INVESTIGATING ATTEMPTED RAM-RAID An east Auckland vape store has been the latest target for ram-raiding criminals keen to help themselves to other people’s property.

Police are investigating the incident, which saw offenders attempt to force entry to a business in Cascades Road, Pakuranga, at about 5.20am on January 15.

“It is understood a vehicle has been used in an attempt to gain entry into the premises,” a police spokesperson says.

“However, those involved were disturbed by members of the public who witnessed the incident, and have fled the scene on foot before being picked up by a second vehicle.

“The vehicle believed to be used during this incident was abandoned at the scene and has since been towed for forensic examination.

“An investigation is now under way to determine what has occurred and who is involved.”

Skill Samurai is a coding and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) academy located at the Botany Town Centre.

It’s run by learning centre director and franchisees Anand Patil and Navdeep Singh with coaches Jaedon Burgess, Ann Del Rosario, Julia Venice Escoto, and Tobias Thompson.

It provides classes in coding, programming, 3D printing, robotics, and artificial intelligence from an academic and critical-thinking point of view, Patil says.
