LOCKDOWN
Covid alert remains at Level 3

A seal pup separated from its mum washed ashore on The Parade at Bucklands Beach on Friday. The seal’s presence created a lot of excitement as passers-by gathered to have a look at the guest, nicknamed Sam. uckland will remain at Alert Level 3 until 11.59pm Sunday. The Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern made the announcement at 3pm yesterday at her post-Cabinet media briefing. The PM said the country needed to put itself in the best long-term position to manage successfully, and in the most contained way possible. “Ultimately, our goal needs to be managing this cluster from Level Two as soon as we feel confident we can do that,” she said. “That means feeling confident we have the perimeter of the cluster well understood and defined, and are not seeing too many cases cropping up that we haven’t found through contact tracing. Based on the advice of the Director General (of Health – Dr Ashley Bloomfield), we believe that confidence can be built over the course of this week. “That is why, the Director General has recommended to Cabinet, and Cabinet has agreed, to apply a short extension of Level Three restrictions in Auckland until 11.59pm this Sunday 30 August.” Restrictions were due to be lifted on Wednesday following two weeks at Alert Level 3. “These extra four days are believed necessary to allow us to move down a level in Auckland, and stay down. We want both confidence, and certainty for everyone,” the Prime Minister said. “We also agree with the Director General’s view that, as we did before, that Auckland should step its way into Level Two. “That means from midnight on Sunday: schools, hospitality, retail and those entities that are able to operate at Level Two all reopen, but we will keep a limit on mass gatherings – and that means groups of no more than 10, with the exception of tangihanga and funerals, which, you will recall ,occurred with up to 50 people the last time we stepped into Level Two gradually.” ➤ Turn to page 4

t comes as a bit of a surprise when 32-year-old Labour Party candidate for Pakuranga says that she has been in politics for 10 years. “I’m currently a second term elected member of Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board (Panmure Local Board) and the Mt Wellington Licensing Trust,” she says. She openly admits that she is contesting the Pakuranga seat in the General Elections more to raise the Party vote and be visible in the area. “We know we are not going to win this seat but we would like to raise the Labour Party flag and make people aware of the work we have been doing,” says the young mother-of-two, Reiko-San, 8, and Diora-Lee, 11. Henry says she has mapped out a definite sixyear progression plan in politics.

Phoenix, the cat with many tales By NICK KRAUSE
T
here are cats – and then there are cats. There’s Stubbs, who reigned as mayor in the Alaskan historic district of Talkeetna. What about Félicette, the first and only cat to have survived spaceflight after being launched into space by the French in the 60s? Or there’s Nala who boasts 4.3 million followers on Instagram for which she has been duly recognised as the Guinness World Records title holder. Much closer to home is Phoenix, aged 3 or 4, who is known by just about every child – and their parents – who plays or goes to school or playcentre near Howick Domain. This puss is so attuned to school runs, he makes sure he’s out around Owairoa Primary School most days to collect his quota of pats. The domain is also home to the Howick Tennis Club where Phoenix is a regular patron, often taking time to contemplate the universe mid-court during club matches. He has even left his Abercrombie Street home nearby to catch a team’s sevens training on a Wednesday – and made the effort
under his own steam to watch the game the following Saturday. “We have tried everything to keep him home but he just loves the park. He does come home two or three times a day to eat and he sleeps here most nights,” says owner Staci McLean. When he initially went walkabout, Staci became worried. No longer however – she has to put their phone number on his tag. The calls from concerned residents crossing Phoenix’s path are a fact of life. “I’d explain he’s not actually lost. We would go and pick him up.” Staci recalls driving past the domain playground one morning. “A group of preschool kids and their teachers were playing. From out of the middle of the kids wanders Phoenix. He loved seeing the kids and having pats.” So popular was the moggie and his exploits following a lengthy social media splash, Staci started a Facebook page for Phoenix which has 133 followers (see link at the end). One post in July from Amy Hillerby shows Phoenix climbing trees with her children during the holidays. “He loves meeting everyone and,
during lockdown, he would wait at the park for pats and to say hi to all the walkers and kids,” says Staci. Phoenix has a loyal fan base, without question. Lisa Buckley, in a particularly said on the local Grapevine last month: “Yip, he was snuggled on the upstairs chair at the Howick Tennis Club this evening. Left part way through the night, cruising across the courts in the middle of everyone’s games. Much loved by many.” Andrea Martin: “Lol reading this post is wonderful Phoenix is a real hero passing on cat love to everyone .... very cute xx.’” Kathryn Kelly: “Strong willed cat too, always stands up to my dog and gives him a swipe and doesn’t run away like most cats do.” Pearl Cornelia: “Beautiful cat, often joined us at bootcamp.” Carolyn Gordon: “He loves the Howick Tennis Club – can’t wait until gates open – he is a regular and we love it…we call him Tennison.” Howick Tennis Club club manager Kashmira Umrigar told the Times Phoenix has become part of the club. “He loves to sunbathe on our courts whilst we are playing or upstairs on the deck. His favourite spot is our couch upstairs in the

club rooms. There is’t a single day when he doesn’t visit the club.” However it is the Howick feline’s actions about two years ago which have left an indelible mark on Staci who acknowledges this is no ordinary cat. “I knew there was something different about Phoenix when one night I had gone to bed early and woke to hear someone crying outside my bedroom window,” says Staci. “I went downstairs, found a very drunk and upset young lady, maybe in her late teens, early twenties. She had been drinking in Howick with her friends, had become upset and had taken off on her own. “She told me she had wanted to find a way to harm herself as she was walking around, but she met Phoenix, she followed him and

he led her all the way back to my house in Abercrombie Street and, through a construction area (they were getting a carport built at the time), to directly under my bedroom window. “I am an author and speaker in the field of emotional health and alcohol abuse so I was the perfect person for her to talk too. I found her mother’s number in her phone and they came and collected her. “Phoenix led her from Howick to our house, to the exact place she needed to be. That is the kind of cat he is. “Thank you everyone who gives him love. Sorry to all the tennis players whose games are interrupted by Phoenix.” ➤ www.facebook.com/ groups/eastauckgrapevine/ permalink/3224642354264681/

➤ From page 1 The rest of the country will maintain the current Level Two settings. The government will put these settings in place for one week from Sunday and review them before Sunday, September 6. Ardern shared the rationale for keeping the rest of New Zealand at Level Two. “Many will argue, that given we haven’t seen cases elsewhere, the rest of New Zealand should see a lift in current restrictions. I absolutely understand that sentiment. It makes sense. “Except for one issue and that is regional travel. There are many people and businesses who will want to enter and leave Auckland once it is at Level Two, from Sunday night. And many others who will want to see the benefit that comes from our biggest city moving around the country again. That includes, for instance, hospitality, or retailers. But with that movement, does come risk. “So there is a choice to be made. If we want the eco-
nomic benefit of regional travel, the trade-off is keeping in place the social distancing and mass gathering limits that help keep everyone safe in the meantime.“ The Government continues to ask everyone who is on public transport, and planes, to wear a mask or face covering. “Given the recent transmission we have seen on this form of transport, Cabinet has decided to move to mandating the wearing of face coverings on public transport for Level Two and above. These new orders will come into force from Monday,” the PM said. “The next seven days, in fact the next several weeks, will see more cases. But it will see thousands of tests, hundreds of workers contact tracing, a team out in full force to stamp out Covid in New Zealand. “And I hope it will also see everyone playing their part.” ➤ Staying home if they’re sick and getting a test. ➤ Downloading the NZ Covid tracer app.

➤ Keeping a log of everywhere they go, and everyone they’re with. ➤ Washing their hands. ➤ Being kind. “This has been a hard year. It’s been a hard year for Christchurch who has fresh reminders of that this week. It’s been a hard year for Auckland, it’s been a hard year for drought stricken and flood ridden parts of the country,” said the PM. “So if it feels hard, that’s because it has been. But let’s also remember, in a world where 2020 has frankly been terrible, we are strong, we have been kind, and we are doing really well.”

Summerset serviced apartment resident, Alma with daughter Maree
*Licence to occupy.
“I don’t think you’d ever need to feel lonely here. It’s just like a big family…and there’s [always] something going on,” remarks Alma.
So, when the option to move to a Summerset serviced apartment came up, Alma and daughter Maree were naturally a little nervous it might be a bit on the quiet side for her. But, since the move, they’ve discovered it’s been anything but quiet.
When she first arrived at her serviced apartment, Alma’s daughter Maree recalled “I thought it might take her a little while but it was quite amazing really how quickly she settled, and I think that was down to the staff”. While the move was a big decision, the whole family feel that Alma has “blossomed” since and has become more herself again. “She’s involved herself in things that she hadn’t done for years…choir, exercising. She’s just taken it with both hands… made friends…and it’s all been just amazing.”
“I think mum was just so delighted when she came here….and realised how welcoming and how well-run [the place is] and what care is here for her.” 0800 SUMMER | summerset.co.nz For up-to-date information on visiting our villages, go to summerset.co.nz/covid-19
A self-professed ‘fussy’ person, Alma was also delighted with the high standards of the staff. “They do all the cleaning and upkeep. Everything is just how you’d love it to be if you were at home or with family.” Alma hasn’t had time for boredom at all since moving to Summerset. “There’s so much to keep you occupied. Music. Happy Hour twice a week. Little outings. It’s a lovely place to be.” Alma also fills her time with a cheeky bit of cleaning, even though she doesn’t need to lift a finger. “I don’t think she leaves a lot for the staff to clean, but that’s mum,” laughs Maree. “It’s a relief for us to know that she’s taken care of. Dad would be so pleased to see she’s in a place like this. It’s just been a godsend.”
Summerset serviced apartments provide independent living with help on hand if you need it. Available now at our Ellerslie, Hobsonville and Karaka villages, from just $349,000.*

From growing up in a big family in Christchurch to being happily married for 63 years, Alma’s had plenty of company throughout her whole life.

Shakespeare students shine at Howick College E
leven Auckland students are off to Dunedin to attend Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand’s (SGCNZ) National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP) in late September. Two students from Howick College, Lily Moore and Jenna Feldtman, two students from Botany Downs Secondary College, Shalom DeSouza and Jake Fanstone, have been chosen from the SGCNZ e-National University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival to attend the week-long intensive of workshops and rehearsals, following the results announced last week. Howick College’s entry from Antony & Cleopatra also took out the award for Outstanding Student Directed Ensemble Work and Feldtman won the award for Best Voice Projection. Of Feldtman’s performance, assessor John Gardyne said she was strong and focused, with an excellent stage presence and strong physicality – but most importantly she had a strong understanding of the text. This was an impressive achievement as the students were tasked with submitting their performance by video due to disruptions caused by

Covid-19. Jillian Dryden, head of drama Howick College says, “This is a first for Howick College and is an absolute honour. Who knows, they may even gain the opportunity to attend The Globe Theatre in London next July, borders permitting, as one of 24 students who will be selected to form the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company.” She says that like Shakespeare’s Hamlet they found themselves asking “To be
or not to be...that is the question” (Hamlet Act III sc1) while preparing for this years’ SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival. “We, like many other schools around Aotearoa faced with the challenges of Covid-19, frequently asked ourselves a similar question: “how are we going to make this happen?” But the students have made it happen and more importantly the remarkable Dawn Sanders ONZM, QSM, SGCNZ CEO and
trustee, has made it happen with her amazing creativity, vision and team spirit.” The three assessors were Ryan Hartigan from the University of Otago; Salesi Le’ota, Wellington actor, who has had considerable experience on the Pop-Up Globe stage; and, courtesy Trinity College London, John Gardyne, in London via Zoom for the fourhour decision-making from 5am UK time, having already viewed all the entries. The students, from all around the country, will also be joined by Paige Kendon of Howick College and Grace Mora of St Cuthbert’s College, winners of the SGCNZ/Dawn Sanders Shakespeare Costume Design Competition and the SGCNZ/Morrison Music Trust Shakespeare Music Composition Competition respectively. Over the week, the students will work with three different professional directors and put on three 40-minute performances of Shakespeare plays after five half days of rehearsals - from being cast, learning lines to the two public performances on Friday October 2 at 6.30pm and Saturday October 3 at 7.30pm, both at the University of Otago College of Education Hall.

The paper is still coming out Today’s paper is smaller than usual due to the uncertainty surrounding yesterday’s 3pm announcement by the Prime Minister about the next step for Auckland. This announcement was made right on our deadline. We are all hoping Auckland will drop a level at midnight Wednesday but this is uncertain for us and our retailers today. I would like to thank those advertisers who have stayed with today’s paper. We’re so grateful. I really do call on our readers to please support the advertisers who enable us to bring you this paper. We are thrilled that our walkers are still out there battling the elements to make sure you do receive the paper. We have a team of over 200 walkers both children, young adults and adults doing their best to get the news into your letterbox each week. Necessity is the mother of all innovations. The pandemic has also given rise to more entrepreneurial activity. What we see today is the potential for democratising entrepreneurship and creating new entrepreneurial role models who people can more easily identify with. Head chef Manjit at Lucky’s Howick discovered a one-off opportunity. t was meant to be a grand celebration with the family at a fancy restaurant but with the sudden Level 3 lockdown being announced, Howick locals Eleanor and Bruce Robb celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a special roast dinner delivered by Ted Waters of the Apothecary. “Both of us dressed up for dinner. And we had our poodle Rosie join us in the celebration. The table was set with flowers and bubbles that my daughter sent and we enjoyed the lovely dinner that was delivered at our doorstep. It was absolutely delightful,” says Eleanor, who was all of 17 when she met her future husband at a dance. They got engaged at 18 and married at 19. Mother to Stewart, Debra and Fraser, Eleanor and Bruce have lived in Howick for 54 years. Ask her about the secret to a long and successful marriage, and she says, “Communication is the

Going down memory lane, she talks of the time they first arrived in New Zealand from Edinburgh, Scotland in a boat called Rangitoto on May 7. “My sister lived in Howick and I remember going to the Howick beach then and asking ‘where are all the people?’ ” she laughs. “My sister reminded me that it wasn’t summer in New Zealand in the month of May.” She loves living in Howick. “It’s got such a village feel and everyone is so friendly. Besides, we live so close to the library, supermarket, doctors and the dentist,” she says. “Just this morning when we were walking the dog, a young man stopped by to say ‘what a beautiful dog you have’.” As for the grand 60th wedding anniversary celebrations, the family will wait for an all-clear indication from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern before they get-together to raise a toast to Eleanor and Bruce’s 60 years together.
Classy Crafts Indoor Market It was anticipated and advertised that Classy Crafts Indoor Market would be open on Saturday August 29 but the re-emergence of Covid-19 in New Zealand has put paid to that. “With regard to the health and safety of the public at large, and of course our crafters, the market will be closed until Level 1is reinstated,” says convenor Robyn Brown. “Hopefully this will happen before too long, and with the coming of Spring the market will be abuzz again with exciting and unique products and ideas in time for Christmas. acleans College Year 11 student Lorna Zhang performed with two other students in their group Trio Achilles at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington at the finals weekend of the NZCT Chamber Contest. The competition was livestreamed on Radio New Zealand and professionally recorded. The annual contest has a rich tradition discovering future musicians of New Zealand since 1965. Twelve groups were chosen to perform in the semi-finals, out of which six were selected to perform in the final stage of the competition. After many months of rehearsing and practising together, Trio Achilles made up of Lorna Zhang (Macleans College) violin, Damon Herlihy-O’Brien (Glendowie College) cello, and Shuan Liu (Pinehurst School) piano, was chosen to compete in the national finals. Ultimately, Trio Achilles claimed the runner up, Helen Young Diamond Award, for their performance of Piano Trio No.1 in C minor, Op. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich. This inaugural award consists of a cash prize of $2500 for the recipient group. “I have only been able to attain this achievement because of the support and teachings that my

numerous mentors have given me, such as my current violin teacher Stephen Larsen, as well as James Bush, Rae de Lisle and Richard Liu, who are all teachers from the Chiron Group NZ,” says Lorna. “To prepare for the competition, we also received feedback from James Tennant, Sarah Watkins, and Bridget Douglas.” Lorna is a scholar of the Chiron Charitable Trust, which has enabled her as well as cellist Damon Herlihy-O’Brien and pianist Shuan Liu, (both Chiron scholarship holders) to form Trio
Achilles. “We regularly play together at the Remuera Music Academy and at the Albany School of Music, where our teachers give lessons,” says the Macleans College musician. Having started playing the violin at the age of two, Lorna devotes one to three hours a day everyday to the string instrument. Other than that, she has been playing the trombone since the last year and a half at school. “I started learning because I really enjoy listening to jazz.
I play the trombone in the Macleans’ concert band. I have been inspired by many musicians over the course of my journey as a musician. “Violinists that I particularly enjoy listening to are Isabelle Faust, David Oistrakh, James Ehnes, Janine Jansen,” she shares. Talking about the trio members, Damon and Shuan, she says they inspire her to enjoy time performing as a musician. “We had a lot of fun playing together at the Michael Fowler Centre,” says Lorna.

Search on for Illegal dumpers
Auckland Council is investigating illegal dumping near the new Donegal Park subdivision. Senior Waste Advisor Jan Eckersley said Auckland Council looks after public land, and property owners are responsible for rubbish dumped on their land. “In this case, the entire block is privately owned by one developer,” Eckersley said. “We have been in touch with the developer after illegal dumping earlier this year, and they acted, putting up fences and clearing the rubbish. “We will be speaking with them again and will also discuss ways they can further secure the site and deter dumping in future.” Eckersley said council appreciates members of the public keep an eye out and reporting these incidences by calling 0800 NO DUMP (0800 663 867). “Even when they are on private land, Auckland Council wants to help with investigations into the matter and share best practices for avoiding future instances,” Eckersley said. “If the property owner finds evidence in the rubbish, we may be able to investigate on their behalf to identify the offender with a view to taking enforcement action.”

Feedback
DEVELOPMENTS DESTROYING OUR COMMUNITY I have concerns about the developments being approved by Auckland Council, to the detriment of Pakuranga and Howick neighbourhoods. Council has set themselves up as the absolute power, with the residents and ratepayers having no input into their decisions to grant resource consent to developers. The decision to try and put land on the market, that was formerly reserve, and an integral part of our neighbourhood (e.g. the reserve at Forty Foot Lane) is an absolute disgrace. The volume of consents that are currently being granted, allowing the demolition of existing homes, is out of control. These homes are being replaced with three or four unattractive units squashed onto the sites, with little thought for parking or pressure on utilities. There is no thought for the beauty of the neighbourhood and the trees, that bring native birds to our gardens, which are being cut down with zero regard for the environment. I have tried to contact council several times but have been told that even though consent has been granted, they will not divulge information, as they say it is covered by the Privacy Act. The only response I have had has been from Sharon Stewart, our local councillor, who I believe is as frustrated as the rest of the residents in the area. I believe it is time to take our city back from the bureaucrats and allow the residents and ratepayers to have input on the decisions that affect our neighbourhoods.

Pukekohe, a wider view I
read with interest (Times, July 28) Robert Batholomew’s claims that Pukekohe was a hotbed of racism and typical of New Zealand during the period 1920s to 1960s. I grew up in the PatumahoePukekohe area during the 1950s and 1960s. My parents lived there for most of their lives. Bartholomew refers to barbers (plural) and bars (plural) refusing service to Maori and to segregation at the cinema. There is an element of truth in these assertions but Bartholomew must guard against moving from the particular to the general. To suggest that these were in any way common in NZ, and even typical of Pukekohe, is quite wrong. Where Pukekohe was different from most of the country was in the work available to many Maori and its effect on their living conditions. Pukekohe was/is the major supplier of vegetables to Auckland. Market gardening is seasonal and many Maori came from North Waikato towns of Rangiriri, Huntly and Ngaruawahia to stay a few months at a time. Growers were not obliged to supply standard accommodation and Maori garden workers often accepted substandard housing as a result.
Many of their temporary homes were little better than shacks with a cold water tap at the door. Consequently, some townspeople queried the state of cleanliness of these workers and their children. As a result, there was one barber (in my time) who refused haircuts to male Maori and the local cinema (referred to as The Bughouse by everybody) was segregated between upstairs and downstairs. By the mid-sixties, cinema segregation achieved a much better
system (non-racial) by reserving upstairs to those fitting the dress code. Housing for itinerant workers had also become a political issue and pressure was applied to growers to upgrade the accommodation offered. This also matched a time when Maori were moving to the freezing works for work and subsequently into better housing. As for bars refusing to serve alcohol, I’m sceptical. It was unlawful, however, for Maori to purchase alcohol from off-sales (the bottle store) and take it home.
This was a hangover from the old days and had the support of Maori leaders of the time and of churches. It was changed by Walter Nash’s Labour government elected in 1957. Otherwise, the sole hotel in Pukekohe was well patronised by Maori. There was no enforced racial separation in education. There was controversy when a Maori primary school was opened in the early ‘50s. The Departments of Education and of Health argued, with widespread Maori support, that specific problems in attendance and health would be better served by a school oriented towards local Maori needs. Maori children were free to attend the other schools if their parents wished. As for a place called the Reservation, that was hardly an official title. It was a nickname given to a suburb where many Maori lived, rather like Auckland’s North Shore acquiring the nickname of White City, Browns Bay becoming Little South Africa, or Meadowlands Little China. Robert Bartholomew might cast his net a little wider to give his research more balance.

LET IT RAIN FOR NON-PERFORMANCE It is with a sense of déjà vu that I read the allegedly voluntary resignation (two weeks before departure date) of Raveen Jaduram from the CEO Watercare role that seems to have suffered from a distinct lack of TLC. It reminds me of the exit stage left of Gabriel Makhlouf from the NZ Treasury. To jog your memory, Makhlouf was responsible for, without proof, claiming a hack of the NZ Treasury and subsequently blaming the National Party. This hacking allegation was proved to be false. Makhlouf was subsequently brought under a lot of pressure regarding his abilities and judgment. In an episodic parody of [British political satire sitcom] Yes Minister, Makhlouf is now Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, a role that presumably is independent of sound judgment. When I lived in Hong Kong, we saw a lot of these people – if you can’t adequately chastise them then you encourage them offshore to limit any damage they could do at home. Our reservoir levels are falling while our rates are rising. We have a long, hot summer ahead of us and it seems the cats are abandoning the impending hot tin roof.

The region’s water reservoir levels are well below optimum levels for this time of year due to drought and water restrictions remain in place to help mitigate the problem. Photo Watercare
I wonder how much is flowing into Mr Jaduram’s severance package? The ratepayers have a right to know what the cost of non-performance is.
Dr Mike Schmidt Sunny Hills
PLEASE EXPLAIN THESE RATES
Why have our rates gone up 4.48 per cent when the maximum increase of 3.5 per cent was applied in spite of those of us who desired no increase at all but voted for the 2.5 because of the way the Council poll was rigged? If this is an averaged increase, what areas of the city are we subsidising and why? Surely all ratepayers should be treated equally. Over the last six years our rates have increased by a total of 31.7 per cent. During the same period of time the Consumer Price Index
rose by 7.4 per cent. So why have our rates outpaced inflation by more than 4 times over this period? There has been no increase in services so what are the reasons other than the increases in staff numbers and salaries? A thorough investigation into the increasing costs of bureaucracy that is taking place at the Auckland Council should be taken as soon as possible. Legislation needs to be put into place limiting the rate increases to the rate of inflation. Also why are we paying GST on what is effectively a tax?
Arthur Moore, Pakuranga
AHEM … THAT’S NOT QUITE RIGHT I see on Times Online you mentioned the Pakuranga bus bridge being pushed out as being a first. This is strictly incorrect as that is how Bailey bridges were assem-
bled from the 1940s here in New Zealand. In fact, the bridge just out of Kawakawa was of this construction and assembly, as was the one closer to home down in Waitakaruru along with many many more. These were assembled, by and large, by the Ministry of Works (God bless the MOW and all who sailed in her). If you Google Watch a video of a Bailey bridge installation at Danseys Pass, Waitaki District, you will see one being constructed. Keep up the good work of your paper, I look forward to it each week.

LANDLORDS HAVE RESPONSIBILITES A young Green Party politician was justifying her renting to tenants, according to her standards, whatever they are, that the tenants have every comfort she can provide which may well be the case but she is in the minority. Close to one half of New Zealands
rental stock is so slovenly that it has dampness and mould problems leaving renters in poor health. Renters with no sense of secure tenancy are less likely to have a sense of the neighbourhood, the community and the company they work for. Tenant families constantly on the move at the whim of landlords often moving their children from school to school constantly changing their friends and diminishing the quality of education inevitably leaves scars and mental issues later in life. Worst of all, for every house a landlord purchases for his own financial gain is one less chance for a teenager leaving school of ever owning one. If landlords in feathering their own nests can have a clear conscience on all of the above issues then so be it. The fact that a staggering 70 per cent of our politicians own rental properties (all but two being national politicians) says it all.

central focus on resident wellbeing is reflected in the design of the village’s holistic wellness facilities and the planned suite of activities to boost physical and emotional health – from yoga and tai chi to woodworking and crafts. A Pohutukawa tree-lined boulevard will connect residents to the central amenities, which include restaurant, bar, library, indoor pool, spa and gymnasium. “A spacious and predominantly low-rise village, Pohutukawa Landing celebrates its coastal location with carefully crafted open spaces, meandering walkways connecting the village with the broader community and a dedicated wetland park packed with birdlife,” he said. “A short stroll to Pine Harbour Marina, residents will have the added advantage of a regular, direct 30-minute ferry service to the CBD, which is free for those with a valid SuperGold card.” The local community has played an integral role in the development of Pohutukawa Landing, from choosing its name to inspiring the bountiful planting

Nestled at the heart of the Pohutukawa Coast, the unique $250 million project will deliver high-quality, design – and communityled retirement village living for people looking for independent coastal living, with the assurance of care into the future. The 32 villas earmarked for stage one are scheduled for completion in mid-2021, with strong expressions of interest received for half the villas already. “This strong response in our stage one homes before they’ve been released onto the open market reflects the great enthusiasm and momentum for the project within the local community,” said Metlifecare chief executive officer Glen Sowry. “There’s evidently a strong desire for the bespoke, communityfocused urban design we’re offering in this unique pocket of Auckland.” Designed by leading architects Peddlethorp Aiken, the village is one of Metlifecare’s four flagship new projects situated across the four corners of Auckland – the others are Fairway Gardens in Botany, Orion Point in Hobsonville and Gulf Rise at Red Beach. Once completed, it will feature around 185 villas and apartments and offer the full continuum of care. Sowry said Metlifecare’s

als when it comes to processes,” questioned Balsara, small business owner of Starlight Enterprises. He wanted to know how the National Party would do things differently. “Ninety-five per cent of the businesses in New Zealand are small businesses, and both Simeon and I want small business owners at the heart of the Covid recovery,” said Luxon as he spoke about the National Party giving small businesses a shot in the arm with GST cash refunds and tax incentives to
save jobs and boost investment. Elaborating on the National Party’s JobStart scheme where businesses get $10,000 every time they hire a full-time person, Brown said, “Businesses will receive an initial $5,000 payment when the hire is made and the additional $5,000 will be handed over after the new worker had been employed for 90 days.” Talking about “the economic tsunami our country has gone through” Luxon said a lot more jobs will be on the line once the govern-

future crises is limited. Also our kids and grandkids are the ones who will have to pay it off.” On the subject of cannabis legislation for recreational use, both Brown and Luxon suggested that legalisation coupled with mental health and poverty could be a toxic combination for a generation. Luxon spoke of how he felt the natural incentives for legalised marijuana companies would be to expand consumption through creating new products to reach different and new consumer segments. This was no different from what he had seen in other consumer goods categories. He also expressed concern about how as an employer in a safety sensitive industry could manage the risk of an employee being impaired. “Unlike alcohol, cannabis can stay in your system for up to three weeks, and as a former CEO of Air New Zealand where our number one priority was keeping our customers safe, it could have very serious consequences. “You need to know none of your engineers working on aircraft are impaired by marijuana.”

OPINION
Gordon and Ekenasio star W
hat a difference Maddy Gordon and Ameliaranne Ekenasio make to national netball champions the Central Pulse who won the grand final by beating the Mainland Tactix 43-31 at Invercargill on Sunday. Without them, they lost their previous game against the Tactix narrowly but, with them, they comfortably cruised to 12-point win. The Pulse are a star-studded outfit with goal shoot Ekenasio, captain Katrina Rore and wing defence Karen Burger featuring prominently in the Silver Ferns world championship victory last year. Goal keep Kelly Jury has been there before and young wing attack Gordon and goal shoot Aliyah Dunn are making a strong case for inclusion too. Having failed to make the national squad last year because coach Dame Noelene Taurua felt she wasn’t fit enough, Dunn shot 28 goals from 30 attempts for a 93 per cent success rate in Sunday’s final. It was fleet-footed wing attack Gordon who provided her with much of the ball although Ekenasio

is also no slouch when it comes to feeding her shooting partner, This time Ekenasio slotted 15 of 18 attempts for a modest - by her standards - 83 percentage, the same as registered by Ellie Bird for

the Tactix with 19/23. However the sweet moving, cool-headed Ekenasio also made nine assists. Te Paea Selby-Rickit shot 92 per cent for the Christchurch-based side with 12 from just 13 attempts.
Although Jury had her best game for some time, she and gallant Tactix captain Jane Watson struggled to contain the speedy Pulse attack, especially in the first half when they trailed 13-23. However Gordon was fully deserving of the Most Valuable Player award with her ability to make interceptions and deflections on par with her expert feeding of the circle. Overall, it was a fitting farewell to outstanding coach Yvette McCausland-Durie who will mentor what should be a strong New Zealand Under 21 team. The talent available is amazing when one considers the likes of the Northern Mystics goal shoot Grace Nweke, aged 18, who leaps like a gazelle to gather bullet passes despite being double marked. However, while staying close to the goal post is her preferred option, she will need to be more flexible in her movement to reach her full potential against tough Australian and English defenders. Still, at her age, she remains an incredible talent with a bright future beckoning. Having performed so well for the Silver Ferns in the Vitality
Agnew’s Angle Netball Nations Cup following Maria Folau’s international retirement, Maia Wilson should remain the preferred goal shoot option as Ekenasio’s partner. But it’s pleasing to have so much depth available. Today the Silver Ferns and development squad will be announced. Meanwhile Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko had yet another disappointing finish in the British Open when she closed with a four-over par 75. After being just two shots off the lead at the halfway mark in fourth place, Ko dropped to seventh with a third round 72 before fading to 14th over the final round, 11 shots behind German winner Sophia Popov. It was the third straight tournament she failed to kick on with after promising starts. Nevertheless hope remains she will continue to improve. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
