Development’s opponents vow to continue fight By CHRIS HARROWELL
Children’s burn camp makes a flying start From those who were attending the Annual Children’s Burn Camp for the sixth time to those who were a bit nervous as it was their first experience, around 35 burns survivors from all over New Zealand gathered at Willow Park Christian Camp at Eastern Beach on Friday. The five-day camp, hosted by the Burn Support Charitable Trust, started with Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown reaching out to the young and enthusiastic burn survivors who were looking forward to making new friends and finding their own voice.
Instantly taking up to Brown, there was a lot of banter as one of the teenagers asked the MP: `Will you be participating in Dancing with the Stars this year? We will vote for you’. Another six-year-old offered him lollies from his secret stash. The yearly camp Awhi for burn survivors aged 7-17 provides a secure environment to nurture and raise the self-esteem of young burn survivors. Supported by the Howick Local Board and Lions Foundation, Camp Awhi got off to a flying start as survivors headed to the beach and had a fun experience with jetskis and ski biscuits.

wo of the opponents of a proposed east Auckland apartment development say they’re as determined as ever to stop it from going ahead. Box Property Ltd initially planned to build 71 apartments with 113 parking spaces on the former Steward Motors site in Sandspit Road and Reydon Place. The land is over the road from Howick College and Cockle Bay School and is in Auckland Council’s ‘single house zone’. Box Property says the project is an ‘integrated residential development’ (IRD), but its opponents disagree. The council denied the initial resource consent application in 2019, saying traffic and environmental concerns were too prevalent. Box Property has since downsized its plans to a proposed 54 units with 84 parking spaces. It’s appealed the declined
consent application to the Environment Court. The company’s efforts have faced outspoken resistance from numerous locals including the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association, chaired by Laurie Slee, and Sel Pratt, who lives in Reydon Place.
“I can understand why many of the local residents are upset. David Jans, Box Property director
Slee disagrees the proposal complies with the definition of an IRD, which tend to be rest and retirement homes, he says. “We are [also] very concerned about the environmental impacts. “The site is contaminated with asbestos and petroleum products. “There’s a whole series of
environmental issues, which were touched on by Forest and Bird in their submission. “We’re very concerned with school safety and the traffic.” Pratt says the ongoing battle over the development has led to multiple people in his street moving because they’ve “had a gut’s full”. “They just got away from it. Four households have gone and I’m next. “I will leave but I’m committed to fight on. [One couple] said, ‘the minute you go on the market, we’re going on the market’. “At no time at any of these discussions has anyone in the street said it [the development] will affect our properties. “We are not nimbys and never will be.” Box Property director David Jans says Auckland has a “significant” housing shortage as a result of its population growing by 100,000 new residents each year. ➤ Turn to page 3

MARRIAGE
Virtual wedding across two countries By FARIDA MASTER
I
t wasn’t how either of them had visualised their wedding day, but when life gives you a pandemic, you work with innovative plans for your big day – even if the bride and groom are in different countries. Refusing to let a lockdown dampen their spirits, Erum Panju, a local special needs teacher, recently exchanged vows in an online wedding ceremony with Shabbir Gulamali, located in Milton Keyes, north-west of London. Around 500 friends and family from all over the world witnessed the unique wedding officiated by a priest in the UK. Erum’s mum and dad Insha and Junny converted their beautiful backyard into a spectacular event space and had around 80 guests at their Redoubt Rd home. There was an air of anticipation as guests were ushered into the living area with a tripod camera focused on the bride, her parents and younger brother Ali. A television screen (remotely operated from UK) live-streamed the marriage ceremony worldwide. Setting a cheerful note for the online wedding was a speech relayed from the UK by sister-inlaw Tasneem, coupled with hilarious video clips from friends of the
groom. A sacred prayer and talk by a priest/sheikh on the essence of marriage followed. From bursts of laughter as the groom whisked out a cut-out of his new bride, saying “wish you were here but this will have to do for the moment” to heart-stopping moments as the internet started buffering – the online wedding was certainly a memorable one! Funnily enough, just before the bride was to say `I do’, the internet connection slowed down a wee bit. Luckily, techies on the scene quickly resolved the problem as the couple exchanged wedding vows. Erum, who travelled to the UK in 2019 and met Shabbir, a financial analyst, whilst she was on her OE, says they had exciting plans to tie the knot in New Zealand. “The idea was to have people from the UK travel to New Zealand for a grand wedding,” says the young bride. She returned to New Zealand in September 2020 knowing that her future husband and in-laws would follow months later for the wedding. Then the UK went into complete lockdown in an attempt to contain the virus. “Both of us had decided from the start that we would go with the flow and not let anxiety come in the way of our marriage plans,” says Erum, who will be returning to the UK by

the time this article goes to print. A celebration of love in the uncertain times of Coronavirus – and a new Covid variant – was a huge challenge but the couple was certain they didn’t want to postpone their wedding. Another priority was having their parents and siblings around for the special day. “The only way out was an online wedding,” says the new bride, who
was keen to have her loved ones share her wedding day. “One of Shabbir’s cousins got married on zoom which got us thinking about it as a potential possibility. The only difference was the bride and groom were together.” Talking from UK, Shabbir says the marriage ceremony was a bittersweet moment for him. “On the one hand it was lovely to have a religious marriage ceremony
and on the other, my new wife was on the other side of the world. It probably was the first virtual wedding where the bride and groom aren’t even in the same continent,” he says. And while the couple will soon have a civil union ceremony in UK, their virtual wedding filled with love and gratitude is a story they will enjoy sharing with their grandchildren someday.

Development’s opponents vow to fight on ➤ From page 1 It’s “inequitable” for people to expect because they live in an area with positive features such as coastal views and beaches they’re “exempt from sharing the inconvenience and extra strain on infrastructure and traffic that this increasing population has resulted in”, he says. “I can understand why many of the local residents are upset. “They don’t want the disruption and inconvenience of the construction phase and they don’t want to have more traffic to contend with.”
Jans says he believes the proposed development will significantly improve the site. Once it’s completed, its opponents will be “pleasantly surprised” at how it blends in with its surroundings, he says. He believes concerns expressed by residents relating to traffic are unfounded. “The traffic issue goes away during the school holidays and reemerges during school terms when parents drive their children to and from school.”

COMMUNITY
Questions raised over ‘wasted’ road resurfacing By CHRIS HARROWELL
A
lex Simich is not the first east Auckland local to wonder why a seemingly flawless road in the community is being ripped up and resurfaced. The Eastern Beach resident says he can’t understand why Vivian Wilson Drive, which is at the bottom of his street, is being resurfaced when to his eye it looked to be in perfect condition already. When the Times visited Simich on January 20, more than a dozen contractors were working to lay new seal in a section of the street. Numerous road cones blocked off part of Vivian Wilson Drive while workers wearing high-vis vests directed traffic around the heavy machinery. “It’s a mess [now] but it was good, it was 100 per cent before they started,” Simich says. “They ripped the road up. What you see [with the new seal laid] is exactly the way it was, only black. “It’s a waste of money and you see it happening everywhere.” Simich says he regularly drives along Somerville Road in Howick and believes it is in greater need of attention than Vivian Wilson Drive was.
East Auckland resident Alex Simich wants to know why a street in his neighbourhood is being resurfaced when in his opinion it looked to be in perfect condition already. Times photo Wayne Martin
The money used to repair or resurface roads that are already in perfect condition is better spent on more important and urgent roading projects around Auckland, he says. He’s contacted Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart to express his views on the issue and says he also plans to talk to Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. AT spokesman Mark Hannan says a short section of Vivian
Wilson Drive from Bucklands Beach Road to Aylmer Court is included in the organisation’s 2020-21 resurfacing programme. “This road has been examined by Auckland Transport engineers and the work is needed to keep the surface waterproof and to maintain good skid resistance. “The road surface deteriorates over time due to traffic and environmental factors. “The existing surface of this sec-
tion of road is dated to 1992 and is well past its normal resurfacing time-frame. “The estimated cost for this work is a little less than $30,000.” Hannan says AT’s budget for resurfacing works in the Howick Local Board area for 2020/21 financial year is $3.8 million. “We can assure residents AT endeavours to maintain the road network to the appropriate standards and in the most cost-effec-
tive manner for residents and ratepayers.” The issue of local roads that appear to the untrained eye to be in perfect condition being repaired or resurfaced has been raised on social media on numerous occasions in recent years. One post on a community Facebook page in late 2020 drew almost 100 comments, many of which complained about the work being unnecessary. One page member described it as a “complete waste of time and money”. A number of roads across east Auckland have been worked on in recent months. A letter delivered late last year to residents in Middlefield Drive, Dannemora, states AT and its contractor Fulton Hogan would be undertaking chip seal resurfacing work on the road. Under the heading, “Reasons for the work”, the letter says: “As part of maintaining the Auckland Transport road network, certain defects have been identified on the road. “The repairs and resurfacing of the road will extend the road’s service life, as well as improve the safety performance of the road.”

East Care’s overnight service is closing on Saturday, December 19th. Our new hours will be 7am-11pm every day, including weekends and all public holidays. It is with enormous regret that we’re having to close this important overnight service, after 24 years of serving the community 24/7. However, long term underfunding and a subsequent lack of clinical resources has meant we can no longer safely service the substantial overnight need. We know how significant this change will be to our community who have heavily utilised the service, and who also appreciate how hard our staff have worked to care for them. Our new hours will reduce clinical risk and relieve the extra pressures and demands that our overnight service has required of our health professionals. Whilst our hours will be changing, our long term commitment remains focused on providing the highest quality urgent care and support which our patients in east and south Auckland deserve.

he is barely 13-yearsold and has had designs on international competitions. Somerville Intermediate student Morgan Alley has had her entry in the 2020 Lions Peace Poster competition selected to go forward to the international competition, after winning the local Howick Lions Club competition in December 2020. This year’s poster theme was ‘Peace through Service’ and Morgan used a combination of colour pencils and watercolour paints to complete her poster of a medic helping someone in need. “I wanted my poster to be relatable, so no matter where you are from, you can interpret and connect with it. “I included a dove flying in the sky holding an olive branch because it is a universal symbol that represents peace,” says Morgan. For over three decades, Lions Clubs around the globe have been sponsoring a very special art contest in schools and youth groups. Creating peace posters

gives children everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through art and creativity. Morgan’s older sister Mackenzie had her art work chosen to go forward as New Zealand’s entry into the international competition in 2018/19. Morgan says that it inspired her to give it a shot. She is keeping her fingers crossed as one international grand prize winner
will receive US$5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony with two family members at Lions Day with the United Nations. Each of the 23 merit award-winners will receive US$500 and a certificate of achievement. That apart, Morgan is thrilled that one of her illustrations has been selected by the author of the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling for a book ‘The Ickabog’. It was during Covid-19 that the billionaire author serialised The Ickabog online to entertain families stuck during lockdown. She invited children aged 7-12 from around the world to illustrate her story. More than 18,000 entries were submitted from the UK, Ireland, India, Australia and New Zealand. Thirty-four pictures were selected for the UK edition of the hardcover book. Morgan says it’s her biggest achievement to-date. “I couldn’t believe it when I found out that my illustration was chosen as I am a huge fan of JK Rowling.”
Preparing for school As we are preparing the kids to go back to school it’s important to make sure they have the best tools to help them learn. Children learn mostly with their eyes, clear comfortable vision is necessary for a child to learn successfully. Both distance and near vision are important as children spend more time on devices in the classroom and at home. Spending more time on close work has been linked to development of myopia, such as reading, playing computer games, drawing or using smartphones and tablets. Getting your child’s eyes tested is the first step to slow progression of myopia.
In younger children, myopia progresses more quickly because their eyes are growing at a faster rate, leading to higher levels of myopia, stronger glasses and more eye health risks Our optometrists examine both distance and near vision, as well as your child’s ability to change focus between the two, it is important to be able to do this quickly and comfortably. Squinting, headaches, and rubbing eyes are a few of the symptoms which can indicate your child may need an eye examination.

ebbie Satherly had good reason to smile at the Boxing Day Races held at the Ellersie Racecourse recently. Debbie (pictured right) was wearing a yellow Karen Millen dress from her shop Loose Threadz, the recycle boutique at 14 Moore Street, Howick. Debbie entered the Fashion Day Parade at the most colourful fashion, high-octane racing and hospitality event – and was declared the overall runner-up. Interestingly, it was a double win as Jacquelyn Jamieson who works at Loose Threadz, entered the Classic Ladies category and got into the semi finals at the Fashion Day Parade. Goes to show that with a little bit of creativity, a unique, one-of-akind dress from a recycle boutique could be an absolute winner! Talk about a sustainable win!

In contrast to what most parents believe, the outcomes are not predetermined just by your genes and it’s not about learning alphabets, numbers or col-

Police need explain why they’ve quietly decided to ditch the annual cannabis eradication operation and how they will continue crack down on the supply of cannabis, National’s Police spokesperson Simeon Brown says. “To make a major decision such as this and not tell the Minister beforehand, let alone frontline staff, is unacceptable,” said Brown, the MP for Pakuranga. “We would be very concerned if a lack of funding had anything to do with this decision or the Government’s failure to deliver its promised 1800 new police officers. “While we recognise methamphetamine is an issue, so is cannabis use. New Zealanders voted to reject the legalisation of cannabis. It’s an illegal drug and it causes significant harm in our communities. “There is still a lot of organised crime involved in manufacturing and selling cannabis.” The annual cannabis eradication operation nets thousands of plants every year and prevents millions of dollars worth of socio-economic harm, he said. “It also uncovers organised crime activity, illegal guns and other drug operations. “Given the increase in gang activity and violence we’re seeing across the country, operations like cannabis eradication would be useful now more than ever. “New Zealanders will rightly want to know why Police made the decision to quietly drop the operation and how they’ll continue to tackle issues around supply of cannabis.”

Feedback
A LOT GOING FOR EVS Gary Hollis (Times, January 19) seems to be looking assiduously for shortcomings of electric vehicles(EVs). Firstly, newer EVs do not have an issue with range and, while cost is high initially, there are options overseas that allow batteries to be leased and therefore overcome both initial cost and future replacement problems. We are told that prices are fast-approaching equality with the ICE (internal combustion engine) car. I agree that it will be some time before the total lifetime costs of EVs will be environmentally sound. Charging at home is an issue where garaging is difficult but many garages already are filled with ‘stuff’ rather than the car they are intended for. There are faster chargers readily available even for domestic installation. On the issue of power sources being from carbon fuels, the price of renewables is falling quickly and storage to cover intermittent supply is being improved at a very fast rate. The whole energy field as it relates to climate change effects is moving too fast to make any definitive claims on one approach over another. Best to make your own decision and live with it.

YOU’VE GOT IT WRONG GARRY Re: EV initiative woefully flawed, Gary Hollis (Times, Jan 19). Happily for mankind, old horses and street sweepers, Gary Hollis has his wires crossed. Even if the electricity is generated from coal – the worst possible case – total CO2 from electric cars is less than petrol engines over their lifetime. I refer readers to Massey mathematics professor Robert McLachlan: w w w. t h e c o nve r s at i o n . c o m / climate-explained-why-switching-to-electric-transport-makessense-even-if-electricity-is-notfully-renewable-136502. Having said that, switching to electric cars will not solve our problem. It’s just that it’s much easier – politically and technically – to reduce emissions from transport than agriculture. Our transport CO2 has increased dramatically during a time we pledged to reduce it. That is scandalous. The answer is electrified buses, trains, trucks, walking and cycling. By the time I read to the end of his letter, I realised the likely source of the disinformation that underlies every claim Mr Hollis makes. I refer readers to: www.desmogblog.com/bjorn-lomborg.

AUCKLAND TRANSPORT INCREASING FARES SHOWS LACK OF COMMITMENT
Joe Biden has been inaugurated as the President of the United States. Photo PBS
DEMOCRAT v REPUBLICAN Thank goodness we don’t have to vote for our ruling government like they do in the USA today. Donald Trump was acting like a spoiled child because the US election results didn’t go his way. Take note. For those people who still want to introduce a Republic Electoral System for New Zealand, you only need to read the newspapers to see what can happen and the petulance and carry-on that can follow. Be aware and be warned. Our current parliamentary voting system works fine compared with the current republic system in the USA and voting for a president like Donald Trump, with well over 400,000 people dead in the US from Covid-19 from the decisions made or not made as the case may be. Joe Biden, the Democrat, thank
In what is now an annual event, Auckland Transport has yet again increased the fares for public transport despite knowing it will lead to lower usage. We already pay some of the highest fares in the world but they keep going up. These increases are apparently because of Covid and going to save $4.3 million but we’re kidding ourselves if we think that this makes good financial sense. Congestion alone costs our economy hundreds of millions of dollars a year in lost productivity. And this is the second increase since Auckland Council declared a climate emergency despite transport making up nearly 40 per cent of our carbon footprint. Our greatest tool to address congestion, emissions and road safety has become more expensive yet again.
goodness, has finally been duly elected President (and now inaugurated) of the USA. Let’s hope that common sense and logic leads the way in the USA, from now on in 2021 and beyond.

IMPACT ON INFRASTRUCTURE Can Mr Hobbs of Auckland Council please explain something for me and no doubt many others? How can two homes removed and 15 dwellings substituted cause the same problems as a second dwelling, patio and carports aside times two? The difference is 13 dwellings (yes perhaps no carport or patio) but still an extremely large increase of drainage for rainwater and sewerage infrastructure not to mention the increase in impermeable surfaces sending water to other spaces.

100TH BIRTHDAY
WWII air force hero turns 100 O
ne of the very few remaining New Zealanders who served in RAF Bomber Command in World War II celebrates a milestone birthday this weekend. Squadron Leader Keith Boles (DFC), one of Howick’s long-term residents, is turning 100 and will celebrate with a private afternoon tea on January 31 with about 35 invited family and friends. Boles joined the RNZAF in 1941. He trained as a pilot and was posted to Singapore, then evacuated when the Japanese invaded. Returning to New Zealand he then volunteered to be posted to England, serving initially as a flying instructor before joining 109 Squadron where he flew 52 operations over Europe, primarily as a Pathfinder. The Pathfinders were target-marking squadrons in RAF Bomber Command during WWII. They located and marked targets with flares, which a main bomber force would aim at, increasing the accuracy of the bombing missions. The success or failure of a raid often largely depended on the Pathfinders’ marker
placement and further correction marking. Flying De Havilland Mosquitos, Boles – from Mellons Bay – was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). His citation read: “Acting Squadron Leader Boles as Pilot, has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably shown the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty”. About 6000 young New Zealanders served in RAF Bomber Command in WWII. Of these, around 2000 did not return, almost one in three. Almost half of all the aircrew who served in Bomber Command, nearly 56,000, were killed. There are fewer than 20 known surviving Bomber Command veterans in New Zealand today and the New Zealand Bomber Command Association is aware of just five surviving pilots. Boles was a foundation member of the Pathfinders Association and The New Zealand Bomber Command Association where he recently served as vice president. Boles and his late wife

Margaret moved to Howick in 1958, first residing in Kelsey’s Fencible Cottage while building their forever home in Mellons Bay. Their son and two daughters grew up in idyllic surroundings and all attended Mellons Bay School where Boles, as a founding parent, pitched in with parent-led work including helping build the school’s swimming pool. A mechanical engineer, Boles worked until his mid80s, running his own light engineering business. Daughter Sue Popping said he was a regular shopper, driving his white Holden Commodore through Howick and parking in the disabled spaces to run his errands.
“His car boasted personalised plates reflecting his beloved RAF 109 Squadron in which he served during the war as squadron leader,” said Popping. “Keith was a much-loved figure in the Howick businesses and banks he frequented and was missed after his necessary move to a rest home. “Commemorating Anzac Days on Stockade Hill were one of the highlights of his year and he only missed a few due to his reduced mobility. “My father is being superbly looked after by Ambridge Rose Manor in Edgewater Drive, Pakuranga, having required hospital level care since 2019 when he sustained a nasty fall.”
Crikey! It’s croquet … in crinoline!
The Howick Croquet Club stepped outside its comfort zone and dressed in Fencible-era costume to demonstrate their favourite game at the Howick Historical Village. Bringing a modern version of on old fashioned game surprised the crowds visiting the Howick Historical Village last Sunday. The traditional game of Association Croquet was first introduced to England from France about 1840, while the more modern (simpler and shorter) version called golf croquet was developed 25 years ago. Such is its current appeal that several visitor families (each mum, dad and the kids) joined in with the croquet ladies to compete in games of golf croquet doubles on Sunday. The Howick Croquet Club was established in 1907 although there are reports that croquet was played unofficially on the Howick Domain prior to that date. To help celebrate 114 years in existence, ladies from the club played two games of golf croquet in the morning and two in the afternoon for a public display.

Howick War Memorial Information Centre
ANNIVERSARY
As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary in next year, the Times continues its series by ALAN LA ROCHE giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.
U
ntil 1950, the horse paddock of several acres from Moore Street to Howick Town Hall in Picton Street opposite the hotel, was often used for Sunday school picnics. These fun-filled days had sack races, three-legged races, egg-andraces, lolly prizes, then ice-creams and home-made goodies for lunch or snacks. The Howick Plunket Society, founded in 1948, needed rooms, so they bought a section for a prefabricated building that was opened in July 1950 at the back of the paddock leaving a few pine trees infront for shade. The building was removed in 1956 for space for the new buildings. The Howick Town Hall, built in 1884, was demolished in 1969 when a new town hall was promised by the Howick Borough Council. Some wanted the new town hall on Stockade Hill but the Plunkett women demanded the restrooms had to be close to the shops. Picton Street, in the centre of Howick, was the best site and, after World War II, the Government

offered a pound for pound subsidy for war memorial community facilities. The Howick War Memorial committee started community fundraising including bring-andbuy galas in the town hall, a town hall ball, three concerts in Norm Nicholl’s garden in Uxbridge Road, a huge raffle of a house-load of electrical appliances, gala a sports day at Howick Domain with quickfire raffles, stalls and competitions, a Christmas community concert, a

house-to-house collection, a community fireworks show at Howick and Cockle Bay beaches, special movies at the Monterey Theatre, a float and money bucket collection at Panmure Santa Parade, a Queen Carnival with three competitive Queens and a garden party at Stevenson’s clifftop garden in Cockle Bay Road. But the exhausted community needed another £10,000 so a referendum asked for a special rate addition of 1.09 pence per pound

on land value per section was held but was defeated. Council rates in 1956 had increased by 30 per cent to develop a sewage system instead of smelly septic tanks and long-drop toilets. A new smaller town hall plan was needed that would include a new library, Plunket rooms, rest rooms and a meeting room but no council offices or town hall. The new 1957 building included the Howick Library, moved from the old RSA building in Fencible
Drive, as well as restrooms and a committee room. After eight years of fundraising the Howick War Memorial Community Centre was officially opened on April 24, 1957, by the Governor-General Lieutenant General Sir Willoughby Norrie before 800 residents. In 1975 the growing library moved to Uxbridge Road and was replaced by the Howick Information Service. Howick Borough Council meetings were around the big table from the old town hall which is now in the Howick Room at the Howick Library in Uxbridge Road. The foyer for our grand Howick Town Hall and Municipal Chambers is now the Howick War Memorial Information Centre which closed March 2020 due to Covid-19. It is an essential part of Howick’s economy and the community eagerly awaits its reopening to continue its valued and important service. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian alanlaroche@xtra.co.nz

SCOOTER CHAMPIONSHIPS
Randall nails U13 scooter title Local lad Luke Randall has taken first place in the Under 13 section at the National Scooter Champs in Napier. Randall, 13, who is starting his first year at Howick College this year, is a team rider with Freestyle BMX / Scooter Co. He clinched the win on January 16. “Ever since I could get on anything with wheels I’ve wanted to go the fastest, do the most dangerous stunts,” said Randall. “I’ve raced a few seasons of BMX racing, but in the last couple of years I really found my passion riding scooters. “I’ve gone from not knowing how to do a tail whip, to doing backflips. I dream to be a professional rider one day and I also want to get into designing skate parks and the design of scooters.”
hane van Gisbergen left a sell-out crowd at Hampton Downs breathless after producing an historic performance that re-wrote the Castrol Toyota Racing Series and Grand Prix records. After setting the fire extinguisher off in his car before the start, Shane missed the pit lane window to exit and was forced to start from the pit lane after his team completed a hasty cleaning out of his car, his overalls, his boots and a replacement fire extinguisher. He put that behind him and set off after one of the best fields ever assembled for the Grand Prix, a field which featured more than 50 domestic and international championship titles on its collective resume. A Safety Car when Peter Vodanovich stopped out on the track came at the perfect time, but this was still a Herculean effort. After ten laps he was inside the top ten, by the fifteen lap mark he was in third and on the 19th lap he completed his drive through the field to take the lead. From there he continued to put in some of the weekend’s fastest laps and he crossed the line after 28 laps of the gruelling 4km Hampton Downs international circuit to take victory by two seconds. In the process he became the first driver to win all three races in a Castrol Toyota Racing Series weekend. He became the first driver to start a Grand Prix – and a TRS race – from the pit lane and win. It was a mesmerising performance capped by trademark doughnuts on the

warm down lap. ”It didn’t really get off to a good start when I pressed the fire extinguisher by mistake but the team were awesome getting me ready to go,” he said afterwards. “The safety car was perfect and the car was really hooked up and absolutely awesome. I’m surprised it’s all still there as it was a bit of a rough up going through the field.” ”To get my name on that trophy is a pretty special thing. Looking at those names from the 50s and 60s and some of my heroes too. I’m stoked.” It was fitting that 79-year-old Kenny Smith – making history with his 50th NZ Grand Prix start – was on hand on the podium to present the historic Motor Cup Trophy, back where it belongs in Kiwi
motorsport in the hands of the Grand Prix winner. Dannemora’s André Heimgartner – another V8 Supercar driver and another driver of immense talent – came home an impressive second after his best performance of the weekend. André raced with a heavily strapped left hand after heavy contact in the morning race. In a normal year it would have been a winning drive, but this was no normal year. Matthew Payne was another to excel. Having only just gained his circuit racing license for the TRS series, the accomplished karter – with Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson his radio contact throughout the weekend and the race – completed a stellar debut weekend to come home third in the Grand Prix after a fierce battle throughout. Fourth and fifth after their own dramatic races peppered with passes and heart stopping moments on and off the track were pole position man Kaleb Ngatoa and Damon Leitch – another to save his best performance to last.
66TH NEW ZEALAND GRAND PRIX RESULTS 1. Shane van Gisbergen, 2. André Heimgartner, 3. Matthew Payne, 4. Kaleb Ngatoa, 5. Damon Leitch, 6. Brendon Leitch, 7. Daniel Gaunt, 8. Billy Frazer, 9. Greg Murphy, 10. Conrad Clark, 11. Tom Alexander, 12. Chris van der Drift*, 13. Chris Vlok, 14. Joshua Bethune, 15. Kenny Smith.

Border exception for returning international tertiary students The Government has approved an exception class for 1000 international tertiary students, degree level and above, who began their study in New Zealand but were caught offshore when border restrictions began. The exception will allow students to return to New Zealand in stages from April 2021. “Our top priority continues to be the health, safety and wellbeing of all people in New Zealand,” says Education Minister Chris Hipkins. “The need to carefully manage our borders is as critical now as at any time in the past nine months. We continue to learn more about the virus and adapt accordingly with stronger and more tailored border protections, depending on risk. “Within our safety-first framework, we also have a responsibility to carefully balance our decisions, to support New Zealand’s economic recovery,” he says. This border exception delivers on a part of the recovery plan for international education. It underscores the Government’s commitment to the international education sector, which is important in the country’s long-term economic recovery from Covid-19. “The students will return to New Zealand in phases,
beginning with a cohort of 300 that will be able to return from April, with the remaining students returning throughout the year as MIQ availability allows,” Hipkins says. “The return of these students will not affect the ability of Kiwis to return home and it is balanced against the requirement for skilled workers to enter the country. “They will be subject to the same border rules and quarantine regime as all other arrivals – with any additional restrictions depending on where they come from.” Returning international students will need to book their space through the allocation system and will be billed the standard charges for managed isolation. Students also need to be able to do more to support themselves in New Zealand, with the living expenses that are required for international students to be granted a visa now raised to $20,000 – up from $15,000. “This system allows providers to welcome back students who have made the greatest commitment to New Zealand, and manage pressure on the MIQ system,” says Hipkins. “The Government remains committed to working with the international education sector to ensure options for the
broader return of international students continue to be considered, and that opportunities can be taken as and when it is safe and there is capacity to do so.” The annual economic value of this group of 1000 degree-level international students is estimated to be roughly $49 million in wider economic contribution, including approximately $27 million in tuition fees. Border exception details Students with questions about this border exception should contact their providers. The Ministry of Education will continue to work with tertiary education providers to manage this process. To be eligible for this border exception, students must • hold, or have held a visa to study in 2020 • be studying towards a bachelor’s degree level or above qualification • have studied in New Zealand in 2019 or 2020 toward their current qualification • be returning to study with their current provider • need to be in-country to complete their study. Priority will be given to students who are closest to graduation.

The Howick Croquet Club battle for the ages attracted a large and animated crowd of around 70 people from the Howick community at the Millhouse Reserve croquet greens on Monday December 14. It was an acknowledgement of the skill and experience of golf croquet veteran of 50 years, Lorette McNabb, versus the energy and determination of Elim College student, Mattie Clarkson, with just 12 months’ golf croquet playing experience. From a really intense, up-and-down game that could have gone either way, Clarkson eventually emerged, winning a narrow victory by 7 hoops to 6, acknowledging that McNabb made a couple of small mistakes that let her through. Howick Croquet values its wide age group membership, and continues to promote golf croquet as the mixed gender game for all age groups, a club spokesperson said.
