THIEVES RAM RAID SUPERETTE DE0396

By CHRIS HARROWELL

P

olice are working to identify the people who used a vehicle to break into an east Auckland superette before helping themselves to various items and then fleeing. A police spokesperson says an investigation is under way into a ram-raid incident at the shop in Wharf Road, Bucklands Beach. “The incident occurred just before 4am on January 19 where a vehicle was used to force entry into the premises. “Our enquiries are still in the very early stages into the burglary.” CCTV footage of the incident at Centre Superette seen by the Times shows a white vehicle parked outside the shop as another white vehicle pulls up and stops beside it at about 2.11am on January 19. Four people quickly get out of the second vehicle and run into the shop, leaving the car’s doors open. One of the people is wearing tan-coloured trousers. Two members of the group are dressed in blue shorts. The fourth person is wearing jeans and a green hooded sweatshirt. The security camera footage shows all four people go behind the shop’s counter. One of them uses some type of instrument to try to prise open a cupboard. They then enter what appears to be a room or area behind and to the side of the counter. The person wearing tan trousers comes back out carrying an item, exits the shop, and places the item into the second car’s back seat before returning inside. Another member of the group then picks up a large flat item, shakes it and puts it back onto the counter. The person in the tan trousers picks it and another item up, goes back outside and places them both inside the second white car. ➤ Turn to page 3

T

he Ministry of Education has determined that a future high school in Beachlands may be solely dependent on a large-scale residential development. Beachlands resident Angela Mason, Franklin Local Board members Malcolm Bell and Angela Fulljames, and Labour List Papakura MP Anahila Kanongata’a-Suisuiki presented a petition to Parliament on June 3 asking the Ministry of Education (MoE) to build a secondary school in the Pohutukawa Coast (Times, July 13). Mason had been leading the charge for the new school for several years. The petition has around 3600 signatures.

in their structure plan for both types of schools,” MoE said. The MoE will monitor the Private Plan Change which must be considered by Auckland Council to give the green light for the residential housing. In terms of the transport issues highlighted in the petition (students travelling long distances, unsafe roads) the MoE acknowledged that they provided free bus services, “comparable to other services around the country”. In the report’s conclusion, the MoE said the Government recognises the potential for a future secondary school on the coast however its construction relied heavily on the developments of the potential residential housing in Formosa.

additional ones in Clevedon “may trigger the need for a new secondary school in the future”. These expansions could have a sufficient amount of secondary age students to support a new school – with 3000 additional dwellings at Formosa generating 550 students and the 1500 dwellings in Clevedon potentially delivering 300 students. The MoE predicts, if these events were to occur, a new school would be needed around 2030, and “sooner if additional capacity is not delivered at Howick College”. The MoE is investigating the need for a new primary and secondary school in Beachlands, but it is contingent on the large-scale residential development going ahead. “NZ Superfund has allocated space

In the released Government response, the MoE analysed that a secondary school at Beachlands would have a healthy starting roll given the already available student base. However, this projected growth for the Beachlands and Maraetai areas could be managed for a number of years by Howick College reducing its out-of-zone enrolments. In the short-term, existing schools are capable of accommodating secondary growth in the Coast. “After 2025, additional capacity would be required at Howick College,” MoE said. Formosa Golf Course, MoE says, could potentially be developed into residential housing through the recent purchase of the land by NZ Superfund. This development and

Memorial cross removed By ZOE GARDEN

A

family is appealing for information and witnesses after a memorial cross and all its sentimental items were stolen from Maraetai. On Friday January 14 Hayley Inalei and her family went to the spot where her sister, Katarina Toetoe, died in August last year in a car crash. “We finally managed to build up the strength to take a cross where our sister’s life was taken,” Inalei said in a social media post. The spot, located before heading into Maraetai Beach and

after Te Puru Park, was blessed by their pastor and the family placed several important and sentimental items around the cross - including a white stone feather, a jar with Katarina’s hair and heartbeat, a pink lantern, a teddy bear and memorial badges, Inalei told the Times. The following day Inalei returned, left, and came back at around 8:40pm to find that the cross and items had been stolen. “Everything is gone,” Inalei says. “Everything has been ripped out. Why would you do that? It’s pretty sacred.” The flowers, Inalei says, was the only item not taken and had been thrown into the grass.

Inalei has contacted the police and Auckland Council. “The police have been looking and asking locals,” she says. She says that neither the council nor NZTA had removed it. If a complaint had been lodged, a warning sticker would’ve appeared beforehand on the cross. “All our whanau ask is that the stuff be returned as it literally holds something of my sister in a necklace,” she said. ➤ If anyone saw someone taking the cross down on Saturday January 15 between the hours of 6pm-8pm on the road to Maraetai, contact Inalei on 0212657675.

Group gets the 175th party started The first public event marking the 175th anniversary of Howick and districts was held on Saturday – just hours before the country learned it was moving into a Covid-19 red light setting. The Botany & Flat Bush Ethnic Association held a well-attended day-long celebration at Uxbridge Theatre which began with a meet-and-greet followed by cultural performances and entertainment culminating with the association’s annual meeting. The association promotes health

and wellness as it reaches out to the cultural diversity of the area. “The idea is to work towards mutual assistance and harmony as well as inclusiveness,” said the association’s founder Peter Young, who is also a member of the Howick Local Board. “We have organised a plethora of activities from yoga sessions to Tai Chi, a number of talks on wellbeing, cooking demonstrations, art and music.” The group will be involved with nine events for the 175th.

Thieves ransack superette ➤ From page 1 By now, according to the security camera footage, it’s 2.13am. The person in tan trousers re-enters the shop and returns to the room or area behind the counter, grabs several more items and runs back outside to place them into the second white car. Just before 2.15am the group exits the shop, get into the car, and drive off. Photos taken after the incident show the amount of damage and mess the group of thieves caused to the business. Two doors that would have been at the front of the shop are lying at angles about a metre inside it after having been struck by the vehicle. An orange road cone is tipped over and lying on the ground inside the entrance. Pieces of paper and other items are scattered on the floor around the shop. There’s also a large mess behind the counter. Several large pieces of electrical equipment are lying on the ground while still connected to power cords. A desk is covered in white dust and there are numerous broken pieces of plaster beneath a hole in the wall above it. The incident sparked anger in the community with a post on a local social media page drawing more than 100 comments. Many people expressed disgust at the thieves while others described how kind the shop’s owners are to customers. ➤ People with information on the incident can phone police on 105 quoting reference number P49353586, or phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.

COVID-19

Council prepares for Omicron outbreak Like many other organisations, Auckland Council is preparing for how widespread community transmission of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 might affect its services, service delivery, workforce and customers. Auckland Council chief executive Jim Stabback says the council is doing what it can to plan for the impacts of an Omicron outbreak and, while some of those impacts can’t be mitigated, there are some important considerations to be made. “We’ve taken a not if, but when approach to our planning and we’re thinking carefully about how the council delivers essential services if our region and our own workforce are affected by Omicron,” Stabback says. “You only need to look at how Australia has been affected, with large numbers of people having to isolate or stay home to recuperate. “The knock-on effect is seen in areas like manufacturing, supply chain and delivery of critical services.” If a large percentage of Auckland Council employees were unable to work, some of our services and facilities like libraries, pools and leisure centres, and community venues may need to close or operate in a limited capacity. “While we may also see this happen as a result of increased (gov-

ernment-led) restrictions due to community cases, we acknowledge that we may also have to make some hard decisions around the continuation of these services ourselves.” Staffing, workforce distribution and the high likelihood of exposure events or council sites being locations of interest could all play into these decisions, he says. “It is also important that we do everything we can to protect the ongoing delivery of the critical services that we operate,” Stabback says. “These are the things that Aucklanders need from us – not just the services that they want or are nice to have – like waste collection, cemetery and crematoria services, water services that we deliver alongside Watercare and some of our regulatory and compliance services. “Delivery of these services may look different or be pared back somewhat but what is most important is our ability to still deliver the most critical aspects of our business. “We will also support our councilcontrolled organisations to do the same.”

appy New Year! I hope you’ve had a chance over the summer to take a break with family and friends and recharge for the coming year. After a tough 2021, I think we’re all eager for better things over the next 12 months, but the new year won’t come without its challenges. Covid continues to make life difficult around the world and while we have so far been spared any widespread outbreak of the Omicron variant, it is clear that it will eventually get into New Zealand. The good news is that the science indicates this variant is not nearly as severe as its predecessors, notably Delta, meaning the impact is less severe. The bad news is that based on last year’s response to Covid, the Government still lacks a clear plan on how to move our country forward while providing Kiwis with the tools they need to stay safe and healthy. With strong vaccination rates I think most New Zealanders will agree we are past the point where it makes sense to keep the country

under heavy restrictions, and it is time to look to the future and decide how best to rebuild our economy. Last year National appointed a new Leader in our neighbouring MP for Botany, Christopher Luxon, and I was privileged to be given new roles as spokesperson for Transport and Public Service and an opportunity to hold Labour to account from the front bench. National understands how important our job in opposition is, particularly when the Government holds absolute power and we are ready to focus on the issues you want and need us to tackle. For me, this means highlighting the Government’s complete lack of ideas for building up our nation’s transport infrastructure and pointing out the wasteful spending of your money in our public service. Transport is an incredibly important issue for all New Zealanders and is something which impacts our lives every day. National wants to see Transport policy focussed on moving people and goods around our country and communities quickly and effi-

MP for Pakuranga

Simeon Brown ciently and getting people home safely at the end of the day. I am incredibly concerned that, under Labour’s ideological approach to transport policy, very little has actually been delivered on new transport projects since they came to office and instead tens of millions has been wasted talking about their pet projects such as a cycle bridge across the Auckland harbour, or a slow tram down Dominion Road. I’m looking forward to highlighting these issues and also putting forward National’s alternative plans to reduce congestion, give people more transport choices and to actually get things done. I will continue to work hard as your local MP for Pakuranga on the issues which impact east Auckland and I’m looking forward to 2022 and playing my part in a strong National opposition to ensure a thriving future for all New Zealanders.

COVID-19

Flat Bush rest home worker tests positive An aged residential care worker associated with an infected family from Nelson has tested positive for Covid-19. The worker is employed at Summerset by the Park Rest Home near Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush. Nine Covid-19 cases were reported on Saturday in the Nelson/Tasman region. They have now been confirmed as the Omicron variant, and a further case from the same household was confirmed late Saturday. The aged residential care worker worker in Flat Bush is fully vaccinated and whole genome sequencing is being carried out however the Ministry of Health is treating this as a contact of a known Omicron case. The rest home is now closed to visitors and testing is being carried out on residents and staff. The Ministry of Health said anyone who has visited the rest home since Tuesday January 18 and has symptoms of Covid-19 is asked to isolate and get a test as soon as possible. The Nelson cases are in a single family who flew to Auckland on January 13 to attend a family event and other events on the weekend of January 15 and 16 and initial estimates suggest there were at least 100 people at these events. This cluster has already led to an additional infection of a fully vaccinated Air New Zealand flight attendant who was infected on flight 5083 on January 16 from Auckland to Nelson which the family was on. That flight attendant has worked four additional flights while infectious. The five flights are: ➤ Flight NZ 5083 from Auckland to Nelson at 5.20 pm on 16 January ➤ Flight NZ 5080 from Nelson to Auckland at 4 pm on 19 January ➤ Flight NZ 5077 from Auckland to Nelson at 2pm on 19 January ➤ Flight NZ 5049 from Auckland to New Plymouth at 7.50 pm on 19 January ➤ Flight NZ 5042 from New Plymouth to Auckland at 1.50 pm on 20 January The Ministry of Health was informed late Saturday of a further case who was a guest at the family event. Whole genome sequencing is urgently being carried out but they are treating this as the Omicron variant. If follows a case reported late on Tuesday last week. The Ministry of Health (MoH) confirmed the whole genome sequencing of a previously reported worker at Auckland Airport and the MIQ worker’s household contact, who both tested positive on Tuesday (January 18), is of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. One individual was in Half Moon Bay on Tuesday. Ara-Tai Cafe in Half Moon Bay was named by the MoH as a location of interest. The MoH says customers who were seated inside between 12:30pm – 2pm on Tuesday, January 18 were considered close contacts.

The Government’s plan to deal with Omicron is under fire from National Party leader Christopher Luxon.

POLITICS

Luxon: NZ deserves much better response T

he Government is unprepared to tackle the challenge presented by the Omicron strain of Covid-19 and is developing its response “on the fly”. That’s the view of Botany MP and National Party leader Christopher Luxon, who’s criticising what he says is a lack of preparation on the part of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her Cabinet. “The threat of Omicron became apparent in December but nothing seems to have happened in the last month to prepare New Zealand,” Luxon says. “Instead Jacinda Ardern and her Government took a month off. “Once again the Government is scrambling. “When Delta hit last August, they developed a response on the fly and now history is repeating itself. “New Zealand has been slow on boosters and slow on vaccines for 5–11 year olds and now we’re being appall-

ingly slow on rapid tests.” Luxon’s comments followed an announcement by Ardern on January 20 that Northland would move to the orange light of the Covid-19 response framework at 11.59pm that day while the rest of the country would remain at orange. Ardern subsequently moved all of New Zealand back into the red light Covid setting at 11.59pm on January 23 after news broke Omicron was potentially transmitting in the community. “Our plan for managing Omicron cases in the early stage remains the same as Delta where we will rapidly test, contact trace and isolate cases and contacts in order to slow the spread,” she says. “As we have seen elsewhere in the world, Omicron is significantly more infectious and in due course we know we will see far more cases than we have in the two years of the pandemic to date. “The difference to previous outbreaks is we are

vaccinated and even better prepared. “Limiting the threat of Omicron will take a team effort, like we have done before, and there’s one task I’m explicitly requesting New Zealanders to undertake as soon as possible – get boosted. “For those of you with children ... all children aged 5-11 can now be vaccinated and I encourage parents and caregivers to seek out information to help you make that important decision.” Luxon says Ardern recently revealed New Zealand has just 4.6 million Covid rapid tests in the country currently. “Jacinda Ardern seems to think the 2020 playbook will work against Omicron,” he says. “It won’t. Even with Delta, our PCR testing systems were overwhelmed within days. “Rapid tests will be critical, but the Government doesn’t have enough.” Luxon says he’s aware of companies seeking permis-

sion to import rapid tests that have had their applications before the Ministry of Health for weeks. “National has been saying for months they [rapid tests] should be widely available, including from supermarkets and pharmacies. “Yet the Government has done little other than to make them available for the unvaccinated and for some selected employers. “To make matters worse, the Prime Minister still can’t outline how they will be used, when they will be available, and what isolation rules will be in place. “She even thinks our current contact tracing system will work against Omicron. “It looks like the Government is making the same mistakes all over again and embarking on a second year of Covid complacency. “A lack of urgency, a lack of a plan, and making things up as they go. New Zealand deserves better.”

n behalf of the business owners and landlords of Howick Village, we hope you all had a great Christmas and festive session and are ready for what 2022 might throw at us. We all hope it will be a more settled year. For those that haven’t seen it, a suggestion would be to go to Fencible Park to view the magnificent Whale Tail on display at the entrance. This painted sculpture is one of the 80 on display around Auckland from January 24 to April 18. They are all part of the World Wildlife Foundation – New Zealand Whale’s tale public art trail, open for free access. All 80 have been painted by local artists. At the end of the public viewing period, the art pieces will be auctioned off to raise funds for WWF-New Zealand work, particularly in the Hauraki Gulf and

airplanes, maybe but hydrogen vehicles are a step backwards.

JUST A MINUTE MR BROWN

HYDROGEN FUEL THE WAY BACKWARDS

Correspondent Gary Hollis (Times, January 19) is mistaken to suggest that hydrogen fueled vehicles have a future in New Zealand. New Zealand’s dying oil and gas industry is desperate to find a survival strategy, but hydrogen isn’t it. The problem with hydrogen as a fuel for cars and trucks is sourcing the hydrogen. If you make hydrogen from electricity using electrolysis, the process is 75 per cent efficient. When the hydrogen is turned back into electricity in a fuel cell the process is 60 per cent efficient. Multiply 0.75 by 0.6 and you get 0.45. That means that the overall efficiency is only 45 per cent. Compare that to 95 per cent efficiency for a lithium-ion battery and you see why hydrogen-fueled cars or trucks is such a bad idea. It takes only 1 hour and 30 minutes to charge a Tesla Semi truck. Auckland Transport’s hydrogen bus experiment is an example of indefensible ignorance. Hydrogen

Re: ‘Millions wasted on rail yards’ (Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, Times Wednesday, January 19). The Auckland Harbour cycle bridge was scrapped in response to public opinion – this government listens. On the other hand, in 2013, National completely ignored the result of the citizens-initiated referendum showing opposition to the partial sale of the four stateowned power companies and Air New Zealand. Referendum cost: $9 million. Through neglect, the KiwiRail Hillside workshops need extensive redevelopment to modernise the site, rebuild the largest workshop, overhaul heavy lift facilities and traverser and remove asbestos. Some 250 construction workers would be employed – wonderful news for those on the dole. The ‘new’ site, when in full operation, will increase the maintenance of locomotives and wagons and even build wagons instead of importing them. The cost of sea freight is astronomical nowadays. It will employ more than 100 workers – 10 per cent will be apprentices. Did I hear a shriek

from the opposition? Rail could allow us to reduce the number of heavy trucks and cars on the road – reducing CO2 emission. What ideas does Mr Brown have to reduce CO2 emissions from transport? Seems creating jobs in New Zealand, taking people off the dole, introducing new technology and reintroducing the apprenticeship scheme are a waste of money to Mr Brown. What can I say?

SHOWING THE VALUE OF SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS!

When the members of the Combined Probus Club of Ormiston met for a picnic lunch recently, they had several reasons to celebrate. Like many community organisations, they had not been able to meet since August, and many things had happened since then. So when they recently met, it was their first meeting in 2022 which commenced their tenth year since they were first formed in 2012. Their Tenth Anniversary celebration will take place in October 2022. Furthermore, during that lockdown period in late 2021, their treasured meeting venue had been totally renovated by the owner, Auckland Council. To avoid the risk of closure due to long-term deterioration, during the Auckland

Half Price.

lockdown a contractor totally refurbished the exterior by replacing all rotten timberwork, attending to drainage problems, and even completely replacing the corroding roof! A final repaint for much of the exterior and interior returned the building to its former glory and it is now again available for community use. Present at this gathering was well-known local identity and past City Councillor Bill Burrill who had been their inaugural President back in 2012. So it was a nostalgic moment when Bill, together with his wife Maggie, posed outside the renovated hall building wearing the President’s chain which he had previously worn 9 years before. Probus Ormiston now has 50 members, but a few more members would be welcome – just send a text message to current President Mike Lowe at 021 772 478.

CONTRARIANS AND CRANKS

Re: ‘Hospital charges don’t make sense’, (Neville Hill, Times, Wednesday January 19). I do not find Neville Hill persuasive in his argument against charging the unvaccinated for hospital care. When Covid hits, the hospitals will be full; the unvaccinated disproportionately represented, to the detriment of the vaccinated – who have at least met their obligations – and everybody needing other

care. That is, there is a cost for this “freedom”, in funds and suffering. We will beat Covid only when we reach herd immunity. Since the vaccines are very much less than 100 per cent effective and the immunity wanes quite quickly over time, this might mean as much as 99 per cent of the population to be immunised or post-infection. In any functioning society, we all depend on other people. Asking a smoker to stop smoking or an obese person to lose weight is a big ask. It requires sustained and difficult changes to lifestyle. Expecting someone to spend a few moments being vaccinated is not much to ask, not of a rational person anyway. As for accidents, people are careless and foolish but generally accidents are just that – accidents. Mr Hill claims it’s not the unvaccinated causing mutations and suggests doing your own ‘research’. Aw yeah. The balance of informed opinion is very much ‘get vaccinated’. You, the people around you and the community will be safer. If you prefer the views of contrarians and cranks, which confirm your antisocial beliefs, stay well away from the rest of us. In fact, hide in a cave.

Theatre’s season designed to entertain lovers of good drama BY CHRIS HARROWELL

H

owick Little Theatre’s 2022 season features romance, comedy, mystery, drama, intrigue and a touch of murder. Artistic advisor Alison Mudford is part of a small group of people who decide which plays the theatre stages each year. “We look at a huge range and we read a lot of scripts during the course of a normal year,” the Howick resident says. Mudford says the theatre tries to select plays it thinks will attract as wide an audience as possible. A recent example is its 2021 production of The Girl on the Train, which she says “sold its socks off”. “That appealed right across the board so that’s what we’re aiming for.” The theatre’s 2022 season starts with the staging of the play My Cousin Rachel. The Gothic romance is based on Daphne du Maurier’s mystery romance novel of the same name and adapted for the stage by Joseph O’Connor. It’s directed by Howick Little Theatre veteran Terry Hooper and runs from February 26 to March 19.

The play tells the story of a countess who travels from Italy to the UK home of her recently deceased husband, where her presence unleashes drama. “This is a brand new adaptation that toured in 2019 and was supposed to tour last year but got canned,” Mudford says. “We’re really excited about it and, as far as I know, this is only the second adaptation that’s been done.” That’s followed, from May 7-28, by a production of the classic noir thriller The Maltese Falcon, written by Canadian David Jacklin and directed by Matthew van den Berg. The story was made famous by the 1941 film starring screen legend Humphrey Bogart, playing fictional private investigator Sam Spade. “People will remember the Bogart movie and it’s just a chance discovery on my part as I didn’t know there was a play [of the story] available,” Mudford says. From July 9-30 the theatre stages the comedy The Book Club Play, written by Karen Zacarias and directed by Tracey Holdsworth. Mudford says life, love, and literature collide as a book club’s

members become the subjects of a documentary and are forced to accept a new member who causes their group dynamics to take a hilarious turn. “This play has been a massive hit in North America and book clubs are big here so we figured it will probably have good appeal.” The fourth play for 2022 is contemporary drama Shepherd, penned by award-winning Kiwi

playwright Gary Henderson and directed by Nathan Hey. It runs from September 10 to October 1 and is described as a “provocative vision of New Zealand, but not the country we know”. “We’ve done a number of Gary Henderson’s plays before and they’re always innovative and really interesting,” Mudford says. “This one’s a little different. It’s set in New Zealand but it’s

not a New Zealand people will recognise. “It’s very intriguing and I think people will get swept up saying, ‘what’s happening here?’” The theatre’s final play for the year is the Norm Foster comedy Hilda’s Yard, directed by Penel Keegan and running from November 12 to December 3. It’s set in the “swinging 1960s” and centres on married couple Sam and Hilda who are enjoying life on their own until their unemployed son and newly single daughter arrive for an unscheduled stay. “We’ve done a few of Norm Foster’s plays before and audiences always love them,” Mudford says. She says the theatre is grateful to the many people who supported it through 2021’s Covid-19 lockdowns. “A lot of arts organisations have been particularly hard hit. “We’re so appreciative of the support people have shown toward the theatre in terms of donations. “We rely on ticket sales as our main source of income and if people are looking to be supportive as well as have a great night out, that is what we are offering.”

Rolling out the plan for Omicron

Have your say in coastal planning

On Sunday night, the whole of New Zealand moved into the Red Covid-19 Protection Framework setting following cases of Omicron in the community. This was the first step in our plan to tackle the variant, which we know is more infectious and will result in far more cases than we’ve seen to date. Our goal at Red is to slow the spread of the virus while allowing life in Aotearoa New Zealand to carry on. The Red setting enables businesses to remain open and domestic travel to continue, but includes mask-wearing and gathering restrictions to help slow the spread of the virus and keep pressure off our health system. Our plan for Omicron has three stages. In stage one, when there are less than 1000 cases a day, contact tracing, isolation and testing will continue as part of a stamp it out approach. Stage two is a transition stage where the Government will focus on those at greater risk of severe illness. Finally, contact tracing and isolation requirements will be adjusted at stage three when there are more than 1000 cases per day. This is a clear plan to tackle Omicron in the community. With our electorate MP busy in Blenheim, Hamilton and the Hawkes Bay, I’ve also been working with several local businesses around rapid antigen testing. Contrary to what’s been said, these are available for businesses to use! Currently, we

Labour List MP

Naisi Chen have 4.6 million rapid antigen tests in the country and tens of millions of rapid antigen tests on order. Businesses can directly purchase rapid antigen tests from four authorised suppliers for surveillance testing. There is plenty of guidance on the Covid-19 website and from Business New Zealand about implementing a testing scheme for a workforce. But as always during this pandemic, vaccinations are vital. 700,000 New Zealanders have already stepped up to get boosted with more every day. If it’s been four months since your second dose, head into one of the 29 vaccination sites in East Auckland and get boosted. The same goes for parents with children aged 5-11 who are now eligible for a paediatric vaccine developed by Pfizer. I’ve been seeing strong demand for this development that will keep younger members of our community safe. The Government can’t beat Covid-19 alone – more than ever with the Omicron variant, we all need to step up to keep each other safe. Naisi Chen is a Labour list MP based in Botany

uckland Council is calling for local communities to share their input and thoughts on Auckland’s eastern coastal areas for their shoreline adaptation plans. Shoreline Adaptation Plans (SAPs) look at how councilowned land and assets on the coast can be adapted to respond to coastal hazards (flooding, erosion and rainfall flooding) and climate change (Times, Nov 13). This plan is covering the area between Pine Harbour in Beachlands and Whakatīwai Regional Park. The council is reaching out to locals on the Pohutukawa Coast community to have their say to aid in identifying key areas of importance to help manage and develop these areas. The ‘have your say’ has been going since October 22. “The coastline is much-loved by residents and visitors alike,” Auckland Council’s general manager resilient lands and coasts Paul Kilnac said. “But it also presents a range of issues and hazards that we

need to better understand and plan for. Issues like complex coastal processes and the impacts of coastal hazards, climate change and the need to adapt are just some of the challenges we want to discuss further with mana whenua and our coastal communities.” Once completed, SAPs will provide site-specific adaptation strategies that will outline the preferred management response for each coastal area over the next 100 years. The Pohutukawa Coast Community Association (PCCA), a community group that represents the interests and aspirations of the residents of Beachlands, Maraetai and surrounding areas, is aiding the council as a community partner to help promote the project and support engagement. The council and PCCA have planned both digital and inperson engagement to “help understand how the community uses and values the shoreline”. The online tool is an interactive mapping website called social pinpoint. The public can

drop pins, make comments, add photos and answer survey questions. Numerous comments have already been left on the map – including several from the kitesurfing community, establishing the importance of Pine Harbour to their craft. Others have mentioned criticisms and positives all across the coastline. PCCA hosted two online webinars on November 17 and December 1. In-person events are also planned where locals could discuss the shoreline adaption plans with Auckland Council’s experts. The dates are: ■ Maraetai Beach Event (Jan 29, 10am-2pm). ■ Waitawa Regional Park Event (Feb 5, 10am-2pm). ➤ To have your say, email shorelineadapationplans@ aucklandcouncil.govt.nz, visit the in-person events (pending Covid-19 alert levels), or go to Social Pinpoint at https://aucklandcouncil. mysocialpinpoint.com/sap.../ map. Public engagement will be open until February 11.

Shore take win over premier men N What’s on

orth Shore were made to work for their 25-run victory over Howick Pakuranga in their premier men’s Jeff Crowe Cup cricket clash at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Saturday. Batting first, North Shore had several middling partnerships to get the scoreboard moving. Despite Sam Hinds hitting 57 at the top of the order, both sides would have felt on top throughout. At 157/6, Tendai Chitongo (45) and Ronnie Hira (39) combined to ensure the visitors made the most of their 50 overs. Rutvik Botadra was the best of the Howick Pakuranga bowlers, picking up 3-55 from his 10 overs. Howick Pakuranga made a shaky start to their chase. At 39/3, Zac Watson (2-22) had the Shore on the front foot. The game appeared all but over at 103/6 only for Connah Thompson and Harmeet Singh (41) to take the aggressive approach. Thompson hit 8 fours and 3 sixes on his way to a stunning 67 off 46 balls, but it wouldn’t be enough as the hosts were bowled out for 230 in the 47th over. Meanwhile Howick Pakuranga’s premier women’s side recorded a win and a loss in rounds 5 and 6. Auckland University continued their impressive start to

by 25 runs. Parnell 343/7 (A Parikh 95, J Plummer 68, D van Deventer 58, F McGregor Sumpter 54) defeated Takapuna 126 (B Beecroft 54, D James 31*, N Perera 4-34, H King 4-43) by 217 runs. East Coast Bays 322/5 (S Langridge 137*, R Schierhout 74, L Watson 52) defeated Eden Roskill 259 (A Bhardwaj 68, O Chakraborty 61, S Sharma 33, L Delport 3-34, B Smith 3-45) by 63 runs. Cornwall 259/8 (D Gallage 65, J Cassidy 61, L Dasent 42, M Guptill-Bunce 37, N Stobart 4-63, K Mackenzie 3-49) defeated Auckland University 253/9 (J Stephan 124, G Beghin 44, J Patel 34, C de Beer 3-47) by six runs. Suburbs New Lynn 309/3 (S Martin 158, T Patel 63*, T Payle 60) defeated Ellerslie 106 (S Venville 32, D Watson 4-21, S Devereaux 3-39) by 203 runs. Grafton 352/6 (B Chamberlain 111, D Sharples 108, D Taylor 65) defeated Hibiscus Coast 101 (S Gunawardene 4-8) by 251 runs. Barfoot and Thompson Royal Oak Premier Women Pearl Dawson Trophy | Rounds 5 and 6 Howick Pakuranga 122/6 (E Child 40, A Eastwood 3-23) lost to Auckland University 125/6 (N Matthews 33, A Eastwood 32) by four wickets. Cornwall 60/8 lost to Takapuna 61/2 by eight wickets. Papatoetoe 81/6 (R Lilii 31*, W Pretorius 3-16) lost to Parnell 82/4 by six wickets. the summer with a final-ball victory over Howick Pakuranga premier women. Though the Llamas built nicely on the back of knocks by Emma Child (40) and Amberly Parr, Alex Eastwood’s three wickets made it tough to push on. In reply, University were asked to fight to the end after Naomi Matthews (33), Alex Eastwood (32) and Nikita Parshotam (29) chipped away at the target. Needing two to win from the final ball, Rebecca Ellison found the boundary to keep University atop the table. Up against Cornwall, Howick Pakuranga didn’t let a low total stop them from remaining in the play-off hunt. Batting first, Radhika Patel led the way for the Llamas hitting the top score of 31. For Cornwall, openers Issy O’Connell and Olivia Baton picked up two wickets apiece to help hold Howick Pakuranga to 91/7. Cornwall’s batting, however, came unstuck a second time around under pressure from a remarkable spell by the opposing skipper; Amberly Parr finished with figures of 3-3 from her 3 overs as her side stormed to a 29-run victory.

A yearning to help children overcome anxiety has spurred Mia Hu to keep studying with us. The part-time Chinese language teacher has been a regular learner at our Royal Oak campus since December. “I found that some of my students weren’t focussed in class.” The youngsters, aged five to 11, were suffering from anxiety triggered by family incidents, she says. So Mia enrolled in the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Mental Health and Addiction Support Work) Level 4. It all started in December when she embarked on Early Childhood Education and Community Services Level 2 at Future Skills Academy. “Learning ECE taught me how to create a comfortable, clean teaching environment for children and how to guide them to learn,” she says. After graduating she took the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing to further improve her pupils’ welfare. “I think learning mental health can help

me better understand students’ psychological states and guide them through difficulties so they can face life, and study, with happiness.” Mia taught introductory computer studies at a university in China before coming to New Zealand in 2016 as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Auckland. The Ellerslie resident initially chose Future Skills Academy because the campus was close to home. “Later, I fell in love with the learning atmosphere of this school. We all help each other and progress together.” The teachers are more like family members who “not only focus on your study but also on your lifestyle balance,” she says. Mia embraces the different cultural activities held at the academy. A highlight of campus life was being invited to teach other students about the Chinese New Year: “It was unforgettable.” She taught her peers songs and performed a dance donning a traditional Chinese dress or hanfu. “I almost fell over.”

SEVENS RUGBY

NZ Condors retain sevens titles I

t was a fantastic weekend of competition at the World Schools Sevens at the Pakuranga Rugby Club over the weekend. There was perfect weather and a huge turnout with an estimated 5500-6000 people at the event on Saturday and 3500-4000 on Sunday. NZ Condors boys and girls won their cup finals giving them back-to-back titles, having been the winners in 2020. But both finals were contested by new teams to the competition with Central Storm (girls) and NZ Asian Barbarians (boys), coached by NZ Sevens coaching legend Sir Gordon Tietjens, making an appearance, showing the increasing spread of teams interested and the growing talent pool. All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens coaches were observing on Sunday, along with other talent ID people, demonstrating the impor-

tance of the event as a showcase of rugby’s next generation. The DJ Forbes-coached [Forbes is a former All Blacks Sevens captain] NZ Warriors Academy team did themselves proud putting on several promising performances, especially given they only assembled 10 days ago, many learning the art of sevens for the first time.

RESULTS WERE:

GIRLS Girls Bowl Final Samoa Barbarians 30 – TBR Heilala 12 Girls Plate Final Niue Fiti Pua 7 – Cook Islands 34 3rd/4th Playoff NZ Cavaliers 24 – NZ Barbarians 17 Girls Cup Final Central Storm 0 – NZ Condors 22 RSM New Zealand Tournament MVP: Reece Anderson (Cook Islands) BOYS Boys Bowl Final Cook Islands 24 – NZ Niue 10 Boys Plate Final NZ Cavaliers 7 – NZ Barbarians 0 Boys Cup Final Asian Dragons 12 – NZ Condors 36 RSM New Zealand Boys Tournament MVP – Cooper Flanders (NZ Condors)
