RESIDENTS VENT AT AT

H
eavy machinery will become a familiar sight in a quiet residential community for 12 months if the controversial preferred route of a major public transport project goes ahead. About 100 Burswood locals packed into East City Wesleyan Church on April 20 to hear from
eight Auckland Transport (AT) and Eastern Busway Alliance officials about the busway’s next stage. AT revealed in late 2021 its preferred route of the project’s Ti Rakau Drive bridge to Botany Town Centre section would see it run down Ti Rakau Drive, move left over a new bridge around the back of the Chinatown complex and onto Burswood Drive. It then moves along the back

of businesses in Torrens Road, continues in a straight line past Bunnings, onto Burswood Drive, and back out into Ti Rakau Drive. The plan would require the purchase of numerous homes in Burswood and has drawn vocal opposition from residents. The meeting in Burswood on April 20 was intended to give locals the chance to share their views and ask questions of the

busway’s project team. Those in attendance asked numerous questions relating to the disruption the project would cause, its cost and timeframes, what other options had been considered, and why they only heard about the meeting through social media instead of being formerly invited to it by AT. Numerous people who spoke said they believed the Burswood
option was a foregone conclusion and they feel they aren’t being listened to by AT. At one point a man in the audience asked people who support the preferred option to raise their hands, with no one raising their hands. He then asked everyone who opposes it to raise their hands, with the vast majority of people raising their hands. ➤ Turn to page 5

n east Auckland suburb may soon be home to buildings six storeys high and taller as a result of changes the Government has made to housing density rules. Auckland Council is seeking feedback from the public on proposed changes to the city’s Unitary Plan that will impact housing density including in the local area. One of the suburbs that will be impacted by the changes is Botany. The council says the Government has taken a stronger role in planning for growth in New Zealand’s largest and fastest-growing cities over the past few years. This includes introducing rules to enable higher-density housing, such as apartments and townhouses, including in areas close to public transport and urban centres with shops, jobs, and community services, it says. There are two significant Government planning reforms the council has to implement. The first, the National Policy Statement on Urban Development, was introduced in August 2020. It requires the council to enable greater housing density, with buildings of six storeys or more

zoning. The council has the power to decide the distances of walkable catchments where buildings of six storeys or more are required. These include the areas around the city centre, rapid transit stops and the same 10 metropolitan centres. It can also decide the building heights and density to enable within and next to other suburban, neighbourhood, local and town centres. The council says once the submissions process has closed, an independent hearings panel (IHP) will consider all submissions and hear directly from people who submitted. “They will then make recommendations to us on the necessary changes to the Auckland Unitary Plan. “We must then decide to accept or reject the IHP recommendations. “If a recommendation is rejected, the Minister for the Environment makes the final decision.” Feedback must be received by midnight on Monday, May 9. ➤ Go online to akhaveyoursay. aucklandcouncil.govt.nz for more information and to submit feedback.

MALES REFERRED TO YOUTH AID FOLLOWING GROUP ATTACK By CHRIS HARROWELL
F
ive males have been referred to the police’s Youth Aid service following a recent violent group attack in an east Auckland public reserve. The alleged attack happened in the early hours of March 27 in Casuarina Road Reserve, Pakuranga. Aaron Gray, 18, previously said he was walking through the reserve with his girlfriend and several male friends when they encountered and were set upon by a larger group. Gray, an apprentice builder, sustained multiple injuries in the incident including fractures, a black eye and haematoma.
He told the Times he was struck in the head from behind with a branch and remembered being tackled, dragged down into bushes and trying to fight off a person who was on top of him. His girlfriend said she tried to protect Gray by biting a male who at the time was punching her boyfriend. She said there was so much blood in the area following the attack it “looked like a murder scene”. Gray and his male friends, who were injured also, were taken to Middlemore Hospital for medical treatment. His mother said at the time the people who attacked her son and his friends were “absolutely

disgusting”. She said her son could have died from his injuries if the “impact had been harder” or the swelling on his brain was worse. “They made a slit in the corner of his eye because behind his eye there was bleeding on his brain and it was causing swelling on his brain and on his eye. “If he had not got to hospital there was a chance he could have died.” Police investigated the incident and appealed to the public for information. Counties Manukau East Police investigations manager, detective senior sergeant James Gemmell, says five males have now been referred to Youth Aid.
“As a result of enquiries, police believe the two groups involved in this matter were known to each other. “A 16-year-old male has been referred to Youth Aid in relation to the assault. “Four other males, who are also youths, have been referred to Youth Aid for minor offences in relation to this matter. “Enquiries are ongoing and police would still like to hear from anyone with further information about this incident.” People with information can phone police on 105 quoting file number 220327/7305 or phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.

LITERATURE
One author, 50 children’s books By ZOE GARDEN A local author of more than 50 children’s books has recently released her latest work. Botany resident Jennifer Beck has won numerous prizes, awards and accolades for her large range of books in her 82 years of life, and her most recent story, My Mum is Queen of the Road, is set to continue the trend of delighting New Zealand children around the country. Born in Auckland, Beck’s rural childhood on a farm was a flurry of making up plays and word games with her siblings and, of course, reading. These activities, along with the influence of her mother working part-time in a library and her father tutoring art classes, influenced and shaped Beck’s creativity and love for books. “My writing has very much come from a love of art,” she says. “When I write, I actually see a picture and I write underneath it.” Beck graduated from the

University of Auckland with a BA, MA and diploma in clinical psychology. She worked as a teacher and psychologist. She made early books for her
children by drawing pictures and writing simple sentences underneath them. Beck was heavily involved in Cockle Bay play centre as a parent and was influenced by “several very creative friends”. “I was a late starter,” she says. “I didn’t start writing (published) books until my 40s.” Since then, Beck has written more than 50 books that have claimed the hearts and minds of young Kiwis. Several of her stories have won awards and received national attention. Her favourite achievement, Beck says, was winning the Children’s Choice Award for her book Nobody’s Dog in 2006, which was voted for by thousands of New Zealand kids. Beck’s latest book, My Mum is Queen of the Road, wonderfully illustrated by Lisa Allen, is about two children playing with trucks and diggers in a sandpit. The main character Ari tells his friend Isabella that his mother is a road-worker who works the stop/go sign and is the queen of the road. Isabella proceeds to ask Ari
numerous questions, such as ‘does she wear diamonds?’ in an attempt to figure out why she’s called a Queen. It is an ode to those living in rural areas and essential workers and deconstructs the stereotype of what makes a typical Queen. Additionally, the book highlights how every person, no matter their job, is important and valuable. “It’s about kids knowing what their parents are doing and being proud of it.” Several of Beck’s main themes that are core to many of her stories – rural life, good family relationships, humour, and a positive ending – are alive in her current book. “For some reason, I’m very much an anti-war person but I’ve written about five children’s books about war. In a way, this one was fun to do because it wasn’t about war.” There is a Maori and English version of the story. ➤ My Mum is Queen of the Road is available at several bookstores, including Poppies Bookshop.

COUNCIL
Locals vent at busway officals ➤ From page 1 One of the questions posed was how long the work would take if the Burswood option went ahead as planned. “We’re backing right onto the bus lane so we’re going to have to live through all that construction,” a woman said. “What sort of timeframe are we looking at, because we won’t be able to sell and we can’t get away from it. It will be right behind our bedroom window so we’re going to have to live through houses being demolished and bus lanes being put in.”
An AT official replied the agency was “looking at around a year-long period” to construct what it calls the Burswood corridor. “So a year of paving construction and erecting the noise wall that sits between the busway and the properties. “That involves standard construction equipment in terms of 20-tonne excavators and sixwheeler trucks that work up and down that narrow corridor. “At the moment we’re thinking around 12 months. “Around four months for the
intersections that sit on the Burswood corridor. “Each of those will be staged to minimise the disruption. “All our effort and all our work would be around minimising the disruption and noise and vibration to those properties.” Officials at the meeting said they will present the residents’ feedback to the AT board. The approved design of the busway’s Ti Rakau Drive bridge to Botany Town Centre stage is expected to be announced in the coming months.

Associate principal retires after 38 years The end of term saw the retirement of Simon Peek, associate principal at Macleans College, after 38 years. Peek joined Macleans College from Onehunga High School in 1984. By 1988 he had progressed to head of faculty social studies having been head of department geography for two years. “Peek was an outstanding classroom teacher and delivered results of the highest order,” the school said. In 1991, he was appointed Senior Master, a now out-dated position equating to deputy principal. In 1996, he was appointed associate principal, a position the school was entitled to create due to the rapidlygrowing student numbers. “Mr Peek has held this position for 26 years and made a major contribution to every key aspect of school operations in that time,” said the school. “One of Mr Peek’s legacies will be the quality of the grounds and buildings we enjoy. The school has undergone a complete rebuild and refurbishment under his guidance. The quality of the modern facilities, fixtures and furniture is thanks to Mr Peek. “Another lasting effect of Mr Peek’s time will be his impact on our curriculum and stand-

He has also overseen the school’s extension studies and scholarship programme which delivers outstanding results, the school said. Principal Steven Hargreaves said, “Thank you Mr Peek for your dedication and service to Macleans College, for your expert teaching, sports coaching, support of our academic excellence, curriculum leadership, dedication to seeing our school built to the highest possible standards, commitment to the Macleans values and wise counsel.”

nflation is the highest it has been in 30 years after hitting 6.9 per cent last week. It’s a silent thief in your pocket that’s putting Kiwis under massive pressure by causing the increase in the prices of goods and services and it corresponds with a decrease in the value of your money. We see this taking effect across the country with the increase in everyday essentials like food and fuel. Since 2017, the average house price is up $400,000 and weekly rent is up by $150, interest rates are rising and wage increases are barely a third of the inflation rate. The facts are stark – Kiwis are going backwards under Labour and many families are struggling to make ends meet. What we are facing is consequences of Labour’s poor economic management with inflation in New Zealand outpacing Australia’s and many other countries. Australia is 3.5 per cent. Singapore is 4.3 per cent. Japan is 0.9 per cent. Same pandemic, same war – different results. That’s on Labour. Last week the Reserve Bank sent a message that it will need help from the Government to try to get inflation under control but it seems Labour has no plan. Instead, at a time when we need
careful economic management and spending discipline, Labour seems intent on pushing ahead with a record $6 billion increase in annual spending in next month’s Budget. This is not the time to put fuel on the fire. Instead, Labour must do their bit to remove inflationary pressure in the domestic economy. When families are having to sit around the kitchen table and make cuts to their household budget, so should the Government. While Labour plays the blame game on rising inflation and the cost of living crisis Kiwis are facing, National has a plan. We would: ■ Stop adding costs to business that end up being passed on to the rest of us, as we’ve seen with new taxes on rental properties. We would halt plans for proposals such as a jobs tax and new union-mandated industrywide employment agreements. ■ Remove bottlenecks in the economy that are constraining productive growth. We would begin by fixing immigration settings that are causing some highly skilled workers to pack their bags and preventing others from coming at all. ■ Take a more disciplined approach to government
MP for Botany
Christopher Luxon spending. This year, government spending will be around $128b, around $52b more than the Government spent in 2017. Ministers have a solemn responsibility to get maximum bang for every buck, ensuring that money is delivering more services and better outcomes, not just pumping up prices across the economy. ■ Re-visit plans to go on the biggest Budget spend-up in history. The Finance Minister is planning record new annual spending of $6b in an overheated economy. Every proposal needs to be carefully assessed to ensure it won’t add fuel to the inflation fire. ■ Prioritise income relief for workers. Inflation has pushed people into higher tax brackets when Kiwis need that cash more than ever. National would inflation-adjust tax brackets, so that taxpayers can hold onto a bit more of what they earn, with $1600 more a year for a household on an average income. Skyrocketing inflation is now New Zealand’s public enemy number one. The Government must stop their addictive and wasteful spending and make a commitment to help fight it. Christopher Luxon is Leader of the Opposition and MP for Botany

PARKING STRATEGY 101 O
n Wednesday April 13, Auckland Transport (AT) released a document online for public consultation. It will be available from libraries throughout the Auckland region and AT staff will conduct webinars and face-to-face meetings. This document is a strategic planning document on parking for the Auckland region. Our community is invited to contribute their thoughts with a consultation period up to Sunday May 15. It is great to see council organisations engage with their constituents and seek feedback on important strategic issues. This invariably leads to the question as to what is the purpose of this consultation process? Is it: • To invite public opinion on the conceptual focus of the parking strategy • To engage in feedback on the potential impact on locals • To invite alternative rationale/ideas, or • A beautiful glossy document
to be displayed at Council meetings and on office shelving On further investigation I have been able to ascertain that Howick Village is classified as a Tier 2 area meaning proactive parking management in areas of anticipated demand. Picton Street is classified as a ‘Strategic network operated by AT”. This means time restricted parking and potential paid parking. There can be little argument that congestion on Auckland’s roads need fixing. There can be little argument that we have to reduce carbon emissions to help protect the environment. However, I question the thinking that forcing people out of cars by reducing/eliminating parking has merit, unless you can provide a comprehensive, effective public transport alternative. We don’t have it in Howick. From the 2018 Census, the demographic data shows that the Howick subdivision of the Howick Local Board area has a high percentage of residents over the age of 65. Some 16 per
cent of our population versus 12 per cent across the whole of Auckland. It is one of the “oldest” populations in Auckland and 33 per cent more than Auckland total. We cannot expect people (especially in this age group) to
walk long distances to access buses that only take you part way to your destination. Please have your say either online or at the planned meetings. Ken Scott – Chair Howick Village Association
LOCAL EXHIBITION A GREAT SUCCESS A local author’s three-day exhibition at a vacated butcher shop in Rices Mall enjoyed a steady stream of visitors last week. The exhibition was open from Thursday to Saturday at 65 Picton Street, and was centred on ecology. Bakker told the Times that it was a successful show with a “steady flow of visitors”. “It was good to have such a positive response from visitors,” Bakker says. Reflections On the

SOLUTIONS
Problems with your neighbours?
www.times.co.nz
Feedback
A
s housing developments increase and, particularly under the stress of ongoing Covid anxiety, problems between neighbours are becoming more and more common. Often the issues can be difficult to resolve and can make lives miserable. Noise is often an issue. Loud cars coming and going, music and parties continuing into the small hours, barking dogs and loud building work can disturb the whole neighbourhood.
Also, animals may be coming onto your property, relieving themselves or perhaps barking at you. Even worse, neighbours may be abusive or threatening and cause us to be fearful even in our own homes. Your first option is to approach your neighbour and see if you can come to an agreement to reduce the noise etc to agreed limits. If you are polite and reasonable, you are more likely to be able to come to an agreement. If your neighbour is a tenant, you may be able to contact the landlord, who should take some responsibility for their tenants’ behaviour. But if you cannot resolve the problem, or you do not feel able to approach your neighbour, there are some other options available to you. In relation to noise, the CAB website states: “In many cases, actions by neighbours that interfere with the enjoyment of your property may be contrary to local bylaws or
fire regulations. Whether a noise is “excessive” might depend on the time of day. Depending on local council policy, you might have to turn music down after 10 or 11pm. Local council enforcement officers can issue abatement notices or excessive noise directions to control noxious elements, adverse effects on the environment or unreasonable noise. If you don’t obey the direction, the enforcement officer can come back with the police and take away the source of the noise (your stereo or other sound equipment)”. It is a good idea to call your council’s Noise Control at the time the noise occurs, so you have evidence of excess. It is worth noting that the council will not reveal who has made the complaint. Similarly, if you have problems with neighbours’ dogs, you can call your council’s animal control department. Local councils can require dog owners to keep their dogs under control and remove faeces left by their dogs. Dog control officers may require the owner of a persistently barking dog to curtail the nuisance or remove the dog. Finally, if you have problems with abusive or threatening neighbours, there are legal options available to you. Trespass Orders and Restraining Orders can be made through the court where the law is being broken. CAB interviewers are able to advise you about these procedures should that become necessary. ➤ This Solutions Column has been compiled by Mary and is a regular Times editorial from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau. The Anzac Light & Sound tribute at Fencible Walk.
PRAISE FOR ANZAC LIGHT & SOUND TRIBUTE
Congratulations to all those who created and organised the Anzac Light & Sound tribute at Howick’s Fencible Walk Park in Picton Street last week. My family and I attended, with friends, and we were all very engaged with the creative storytelling of the young men from our eastern area who gave their lives during World War I. The images, informative text and narration, creative lighting, poppies and crosses all came together in a most amazing way to emotionally move everyone who was there. Well done to the Howick Village Association for such a worthwhile initiative. Thank you Dougal Laing, Jane Newbury, Phil Dark, Mike Rowse and many others. The only competing noise was from nearby nightclubs where young people were obviously enjoying themselves. Maybe the young ones attending paused and gave some thought to what was happening nearby. One of my grandfathers served on the Gallipoli Peninsula; the other grandfather was awarded the military medal in Belgium in the same war. My late father was in the RAF from 1938 to 1948 serving everyday of World War II and sometimes in direct combat. So no surprise that I often reflect that in contrast, my life, and those of my children and little grandson, have been peaceful and happy times. How truly fortunate and blessed we all are to have had many young people before us prepared to stand up to tyranny and aggression, so that we can

THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS!
I write to thank and congratulate all those involved in the sound and light tribute which was shown at Fencible Walk in the evenings leading up to Anzac Day. This was a brilliant idea, executed to a very professional standard. It acknowledged the soldiers and nurses of World War I in a meaningful and respectful way. Thanks are due to the Howick Village Association for initiating the project, and to all those many people who helped make it happen. Thank you also to the Howick Village Association for the white crosses and poppy display in Fencible Walk. A very poignant tribute. We are fortunate indeed to have such talent and initiative in our community.

RESPONSE TO PANDEMIC AND GLOBAL WARMING
Imagine the outcome had science and scientists met the same opposition to public health measures that greeted warnings about smoking and global warming. Why have denial and crackpot views of the Covid-19 pandemic failed to take hold? First, television showed the army in Italy carting away corpses, to be stored in refrigerated containers. Odd and strik-
ingly immediate, but so are severe and widespread storms, floods, droughts and fires. So where’s the urgency to act? The explanation is vested interests. The oil companies used the tobacco industry playbook: lie and confuse the public. With Covid, science and pharmaceutical companies were on the same side. Christopher Luxon has promised to build more motorways, protect farmers and maintain high cow numbers. Like the man in Soho, who put the handle back on the water pump that was spreading cholera, he believes the old ways are best.

DISABLED PARKING
At the Moore Street end of Central Terrace there is only one disabled car park and this is outside the toilet. However there are five car parks which are labelled as being private outside the Fencible Law building which is opposite. Who has the right to put 24 hour towaway zones notices on these parks and who owns the land they are on which appears to be part of Central Terrace, which includes the footpath? Other parks are further down but they are labelled for official purposes. Are the disabled to be deprived of convenient parking as in most cases buses are not an option?

SYLVIA PARK GRIDLOCK
I wonder if people know about the problem at Sylvia Park. On Easter Monday, parking was at a premium, dead-locked. I was unable to move for more than two hours. A person found a way out and I was able to exit but people were still stuck there. No assistance from police or security. I was told the same problem occurred on Saturday. Why was something not done about it then? I think this problem may arise again at holiday times and I feel something should be done.

Seymour: Labour won’t be reelected at next general election By NICK KRAUSE

It makes the colour of your skin more important than the content of your character.” Seymour said there has been no debate on co-governance – including Three Waters and He Puapua. “It has never been openly discussed or debated. CT leader David Seymour, who spoke to party faithful in Pakuranga last week, believes Labour will not be re-elected at the next general election. Seymour, addressing around 130 people at the Pakuranga United Rugby Club on his party’s Real Change Tour through NZ, said Labour was no more than a group of union operatives “who got here by a series of accidents”. “I don’t think this accidental government can make it for a third term,” Seymour said. “For the first time in 15 years, the majority of people are saying we’re going in the wrong direction.” “We have a cost-of-living crisis, local communities struggle to get the infrastructure they need and crime is getting worse. Kiwis have overwhelmingly told us that New Zealand is moving in the wrong direction. Seymour pushed three areas of focus for ACT. “ACT MPs will take this opportunity to listen so we can develop smart and enduring policies that create a healthier economy, thriving communities and include us all in the Kiwi identity,” he said.
ACT leader David Seymour attracted a decent crowd to his party’s Real Change Tour public meeting at the Pakuranga United Rugby Club last Thursday. Photo supplied
“A healthy economy means it shouldn’t take longer to get permission to do something than to do it. Government departments shouldn’t grow every year just because they can. People should be rewarded, not punished, for their efforts. “Thriving communities should be built on freedom and personal responsibility. A gang shouldn’t be the best career path for kids in any town. Welfare shouldn’t be a lifestyle choice. “Schools should be equipping kids to navigate the 21st Century instead of pushing the Ministry of
Education’s latest dogma. Co-governance was raised by two members of the audience and is an issue ACT has taken very much to heart, underlined by its announcement last month that it will campaign for a referendum on the subject. “Our democracy is quietly being dismantled. We’re being transformed from a nation-state, where everyone has the same rights, to an ethno-state, where your rights depend on who your grandparents were,” Seymour said. “The worst idea in human history is that we should treat people
said. “People feel unable to criticise it for fear of being called racist. They ask, where is this coming from? “In a democracy, we the people have the right to determine the future of our country. The best way to have our say is a referendum on co-governance. “People who support co-governance would have to explain why different people should have different political rights. That is a debate worth having.”
Men found with imitation firearm Several people were arrested after police allegedly found an imitation firearm during an incident in east Auckland overnight on April 21. Counties Manukau East Police senior sergeant Anson Lin says the arrests were made while officers were conducting routine visibility patrols in Flat Bush. “At around 1am the patrol came across a vehicle turning into Hilltop Road,” he says. “On observing the police vehicle, the [other] vehicle took off at speed.
“The vehicle was located a short time later nearby with the occupants fleeing. The two men were located hiding at a nearby property. Following a search of the vehicle, police located a starter pistol.” As a result, a 22-year-old man has been charged with unlawfully carrying an imitation firearm. He was due to appear in the Manukau District Court on April 21. Lin says police arrested the second male in relation to an arrest warrant for an unrelated matter.

OLIVIA TAKES CUT FOR CANCER Bucklands Beach Intermediate student Olivia Owen, 12, made a special visit to the hair salon this week. Olivia took a seat at hair and beauty salon At The Terrace in Howick where she will be raising money for Leukemia & Blood Cancer NZ. The charity’s biggest fundraising effort is ‘Shave for a Cure’ and whilst Olivia won’t be shaving, the scissors will be removing at least 35cm of hair raising around $500 in the process. “Ever since I heard about Shave for Cure two years ago, I realised that it was something that I wanted to do and so I have been growing my hair ever since,” Olivia said. “I wanted to help others by raising money so that people suffering with leukemia and cancer may get the help and support that they need. “I would like to say a big thank to At The Terrace and Louise who has made a donation of her time to cut my hair.” As well as having the big chop, Olivia will be donating her hair to Freedom Hair in Dunedin where she hopes it

CULTURE
Macleans takes second place By ZOE GARDEN An east Auckland’s school dance group performed their way into an impressive finish at a recent cultural festival. On March 24, Macleans College’s Bollywood Dance Group claimed second place in their category at Polyfest, a festival that celebrates the pride of cultural identity, and brings schools and the difference cultures between them, together. The theme for this year’s Polyfest was whanau (family). Led by Rishita Raela, Margi Kaushik and Risha Sapaliga, the group portrayed this perfectly through their choreography and dancing.
Photos Nick Krause/supplied
The leaders managed the impressive feat of choosing the music, choreographing five separate traditional Indian dances, teaching the group in a short time-frame and preparing the dance costumes, Macleans College says. “It is with much pride that the group gained second place in their category and the leaders also earned a perfect score in their introductory speech.” The group members were: Lara Clarke, Amelie Gaxiola Nunez, Nimar Kaur, Margi Kaushik (leader), Vandita Kumar, Binuri Marasinghe, Rishita Rasela (leader), Adya Roop, Risha Sapaliga (leader), Deeksha Suresh and Plaksha Ummat.
llan Riley is a highlyrespected member of the Howick community, not only for his more than 20 years of dedication and work for the Mangemangeroa Reserves, but also for his membership of the Howick Presbyterian Church and the Howick Rotary Club, where he has been a member of both for 40 years (secretary of Rotary for some of that time). In 1995, Riley was asked to become a Trustee of the Tom Brydon Trust founded in 1980 by a former Howick Rotarian to become a major support to refugee families on their arrival in New Zealand and to also support the community projects undertaken by Howick Rotary. In 2009 Riley was appointed chairman of this trust and has since continued in this position. In 2003 Rotary International awarded Riley the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his involvement in the many community activities of the Rotary Club of Howick. Some years ago, it was mooted in the community to construct a new wharf at Howick Beach. Many were opposed to this development and Riley took the lead from an environmental perspective. Riley has chaired the CC Society Incorporated and committee unopposed since its inception in 2002. Since then he has liaised with councils, Rotary clubs, schools, South Auckland Forest and Bird, local Chinese and Indian communities and other community conservation groups including Whitford Estuary Conservation
Society, Friends of Lot 29 Estuary Views, Pest Free Howick of which he is an establishing member plus neighbouring property owners, and he achieved the aim of setting up a network of plant nurseries at schools and residential properties. More than 100,000 trees have now been eco-sourced and raised in these nurseries to be planted on the 41 hectares of the combined estuary reserves over the past 20 years. He and the committee have redeveloped the entire plan for restoration and planting, extending the walkways through to Hayley Lane and Point View Drive. Riley, along with other founding members, provided the impetus for installation of the extensive system of board walks insisting that management, development and restoration must be kept active through the FOM Partnership Agreement with Auckland Council and the Howick Local Board with the most recent versions having been extensively revised in 2019, accessible on the Auckland Council website. Riley was the driving force in coordinating the various parties involved in creating these comprehensive plans. Originally, council leased cattle grazing to keep down grass in the unplanted areas, but this grazing created slips and unstable gullies. Further large areas covered in gorse and degraded bush have been transformed by planting with scrupulously eco-sourced native vegetation developing into natural coastal forest, home to thriving native bird life. This recovery would not have
been possible without Riley’s unwavering support, dedicated efforts and leadership. While local schools at all levels have always used the reserve as an outdoor classroom, Riley continues to advocate for the building of an environmental education centre on the reserve. This would be a multi-purpose building with a café, nursery area and outdoor teaching spaces included. This has led to the formation, led by a committee member, of a separate trust being established with plans having been drawn up and sitting currently with Auckland Council. All the time and effort Riley has contributed has been voluntary and although the Friends of Mangemangeroa Society has a strong support base, he has been the main driving force behind its success. His skills in diplomacy, his drive in encouraging and bringing together the various forces and groups has been noteworthy representing the Friends at Local Board hearings and refusing to be deterred by setbacks. Riley has always been actively involved in the planting and organising of the community planting days until very recently when serious health concerns and current hospitalisation have impelled him to retire as chairman of The Friends of Mangemangeroa Society this year It will be extremely difficult to replace such a modest and selfeffacing leader. The Friends of Mangemangeroa Society Inc

National jump ahead in latest Curia Poll National has taken the lead for the first time since the Taxpayers’ Union Curia Polls began. However, much of National’s gain appears to have come at ACT’s expense. Labour holds steady with a slight bump, the Greens drop and the Māori Party rises. Here is how these results would translate to seats in Parliament: The shifts in party support result in National gaining three seats, ACT losing four, the Māori Party gaining four, the Greens losing four, and no change for the Labour Party. This means the gap between the centreright and the centre-left blocs has shrunk from nine seats in January to just one seat in April. Both blocs would not receive enough seats to govern, thus, the Māori Party would be the ‘kingmaker.’
The eighth Taxpayers’ Union Curia Poll reveals National is up 2.5 per cent from last month to 37.8 per cent; Labour is up 0.6 per cent to 36.8 per cent; Greens down 3 per cent to 9.4 per cent; ACT is down 2.8 per cent to 8.4 per cent, the Māori Party is up 3.5 per cent to 3.6 per cent; NZ First down 0.1 per cent to 1.7 per cent and Other is down 0.7 per cent to 2.3 per cent. Jordan Williams, executive director of the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union said, “Just like the TV polls, our pollsters do not read out options to participants to choose their preferred Prime Minister – we just include those who are named as preferred by more than a few people in the random sample of one thousand voters. Here are the updated preferred
Prime Minister ratings, shown over time: Luxon and Seymour are up. Ardern is slightly down, while support for Peters has dropped. New Zealanders are now almost evenly split on whether the country is heading in the “right” or “wrong” direction. There are slightly more New Zealanders that believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. Opposition leader and Botany MP Christopher Luxon told the Times, “It’s encouraging but I don’t look too much into any single poll. Our focus is on the things that matter to Kiwis and right now that’s the cost of living crisis and keeping our communities safe.” The polling period was April 7 – April 13.

Howick Bowling Club is set to have a large roof with sides, known as a ‘cover’, constructed over the two artificial greens at its Selwyn Road site at a cost of almost $1.5 million and it hopes the work will be completed this year. Club president Brian Jago says the club has five greens in total, three of which are grass and used mainly for play during summer months. Its two artificial greens are used during winter. “But the difficulty is it if it rains it’s too wet to play and in winter that restricts the amount of time we’re able to play.” The club has obtained resource consent to install the cover and is waiting for the building consent to come through. Auckland Bowls is the project’s
largest funder, with additional money provided by Auckland Council and Howick Local Board, Jago says. “The balance comes from within the bowling club and we’ve got those funds set aside for it.” He says the project will make a big difference to how the club operates. “It will be the only place in Auckland that has two covered greens. “I would anticipate once the building consent is issued, we would start the work within about a month to six weeks. “Once they start, the time for building it is around eight weeks, if everything goes according to plan.” The cover will protect the two artificial greens from the elements but it will also feature indoor lights, increasing playing times. “That means club members or those wishing to join who are workers will be able to come down here in the evening and play

bowls,” Jago says. Club vice president Noeline Sadgrove says she hopes the cover will be in place by the end of the year. She’s looking forward to people being able to play even when it’s raining. “A big plus about this is all those who work during the week want something to do in the evening. “It’s a facility for parents of young children to come along and play bowls and have a drink, so the bowls isn’t just for people our age. “It’s going to be available for workers and there are quite a lot
of families living in Howick. We’ve got some bowls younger children can use and learn how to play as well.” Jago says the “whole objective” of having the cover installed is to make it more attractive for people to play bowls. “Because we’ll be putting lights in it will mean there’s more playing time available and people won’t have to stop when it gets dark. “It will make it more attractive to Bowls NZ and Auckland Bowls to run competitions here so we’ll have more visitors in our community.”
The club’s resource consent states it must cease play by 9.30pm so there’s no impact on neighbours and the cover will be below the road level, Jago says. “It will enable us to run more social- or corporate-type bowls and for people to run a business house competition. We’ve got some very good clubrooms with good facilities and this will top it up and make it far more attractive. “It’s a very exciting development for offering the community some additional recreational facilities all year round and all day long and into the evening.”

Black Ferns gain brains trust W
ayne Smith, Sir Graham Henry, Wesley Clarke and Whitney Hansen represent a powerful rugby brains trust in coming to the aid of the Black Ferns following controversial head coach Glenn Moore’s resignation. Moore did the right thing in falling on his sword after being re-appointed coach despite a damning report regarding his alleged behaviour toward players. With a record of 24 test wins and seven losses since 2015, he enjoyed his fair share of success. However, the wheels fell off on last year’s northern tour when the Ferns were hammered four times by England and France. That included a 43-12 thrashing from England who had last beaten the Ferns 29-21 in Rotorua in 2017 before the Ferns avenged that 41-32 in the Belfast World Cup final later that year. With popular Wayne Smith taking over the Director of Coaching role supported by Clarke, Hansen and scrum guru Mick Cron, the Ferns have what should be a strong coaching force unless too many cooks spoil the broth. South African born Clarke is

the husband of Dr Farah Palmer, one of our all-time rugby greats and Hansen is the daughter of our most successful All Black coach, Steve, whose own father Des was also highly regarded as a rugby mentor. Add the astute Henry, who as a selector is also expected to add coaching input, and the Ferns should be mentally well-prepared for their home World Cup starting on October 8. However, they will need to improve their strength and set piece ability immensely if they are to tame the English and French who embraced professionalism much earlier. Nor did it help the Ferns’ northern prospects last year that they had not played test rugby since 2019 because of the Covid pandemic. Still, England and France deserved credit for strengthening all phases of their game, just as the Irish and French men did in mas-

I am amazed Fijian Drua won only one of eight games in the Australian section of Super Rugby after giving the championship leading Blues a fright and a bruising in their Brisbane clash on Saturday night. While Blues once again defended superbly, their 35-18 win was flattering against the muscular crowd-pleasing Fijians whose fierce attack demanded it, In juggernaut Mesu Dolokoto they have a lively hooker with the

Especially pleasing is the development of Rieko Ioane, who continues to hit hard in the tackle, is reading the game better at centre and scored a dazzling 70m try from an intercept Despite the absence of skipper Dalton Papalii and Akira Ioane, there is no shortage of loose forward depth with tireless Hoskins Sotutu and Tom Robinson consistently making big contributions.
