riday’s news that completion of the Eastern Busway project will be delayed by at least two years is gutting to east Auckland residents who have been waiting years for the delivery of the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover, said the region’s MPs. “Twelve months ago, in June 2020, Mayor Phil Goff told the people of east Auckland there would be no delays to the Eastern Busway project despite projected shortfalls in the Council’s Budget as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic,” Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Botany MP Christopher Luxon said in a joint statement. “He spoke of the Council’s commitment to this project given how critical it was to solving congestion issues in the wider transport network and because it would provide more reliability and choice in our public transport options. “Yet now we’re told the Eastern Busway will be delayed by at least two years and with this

Government’s poor track record, I am increasingly concerned that the next stages of the project, namely the Reeves Road Flyover and the Pakuranga to Botany Busway, may be delayed even further.” Pakuranga Road remains one of the busiest non-State Highways in the country, they said. “And as we seek to rebuild our economy, we should be investing heavily into infrastructure projects like the Eastern Busway to create jobs and ensure rapid growth in the East Auckland area can be managed,” the MPs said. “Instead, the Government sees fit to take money from projects that have been on the books for years and prioritise cycleways over the Auckland Harbour, something that a fraction of people will use. “This also comes after several years of the Regional Fuel Tax, which we were told would be used to fund important projects like the Eastern Busway to ensure they could be completed on time. We’re paying that tax, but where’s the money gone?” ➤ Turn to page 5

LAND SALES
Council advances plan to sell off public reserves By CHRIS HARROWELL
I
ndependent commissioners will be appointed to read submissions made as part of the ongoing process to sell public reserves in east Auckland. Auckland Council’s finance and performance committee voted late last year to dispose of 83 councilowned properties across the city as part of an effort to raise money from “asset recycling”. Among the properties it wants to sell are public reserves at 9R Fortyfoot Lane, Sunnyhills; 111R Golfland Drive, Botany; 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, Pakuranga; 72R Karaka Road, Beachlands; and part of the site of a gas station at 2R Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga. The properties’ sale is being managed by council agency Panuku Development Auckland. A Panuku spokesperson says approval to sell the properties is subject to the satisfactory conclusion of required statutory processes. For the sites classified as reserves under the Reserves Act 1977, a process for the revocation of reserve status, including public and iwi notification, is necessary before land classified as a reserve may be

lawfully sold. “In February this year, council publicly notified and sought public and iwi submissions on its intent to revoke the reserve status of 20 properties across Auckland. “At the close of the notification period, 1344 submissions and two petitions were received from the public, along with two submissions from mana whenua.” Of those submissions, 1145 related to the properties in east
Auckland, with 538 submissions about the five local sites rather than individual properties. There were 333 submissions made about the reserve at 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 213 about 111R Golfland Drive, 58 about 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, two about 72R Karaka Road in Beachlands, and one submission on the site at 2R Ti Rakau Drive. None of the submissions received by the council were in favour of
the properties’ reserve status being revoked. The spokesperson says Panuku requested at a June 15 meeting of the council’s regulatory committee that it appoint six independent commissioners to consider submissions about revoking the properties’ reserve status. Due to the number of submissions received and the geographical spread, the agency recommended the six commissioners work in

three pairs, with each pair to consider submissions about reserves in a specific area, one of which is east Auckland. “The request was approved, and we are currently notifying all submitters of this approach,” the spokesperson says. “We have begun the process of appointing the commissioners. “It is impossible to guestimate a timeline at this point, but we will ensure the commissioners have all the time they need to for their investigations which will include reviewing all submissions, site visits, and hearing from those who have asked to have their submissions heard.” The independent commissioners’ recommendations will be reported to the council’s parks, arts, community and events committee for a decision on whether to forward requests for reserve revocations to the Minister of Conservation for final approval. The proposed sale of public reserves in east Auckland is opposed by the Howick Local Board, Howick ward councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young, and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Botany MP Christopher Luxon.

Cycle bridge prioritised over Eastern Busway ➤ From page 1 They said the Howick Local Board area covers the largest population of any Local Board in the entire Auckland region. “Yet we are severely underfunded in terms of services provided and projects delivered,” Brown and Luxon said. “The Eastern Busway is set to provide enormous benefits not only to east Auckland commuters but to neighbouring industrial hubs like Mount Wellington and Onehunga. “The Government and Auckland Council need to urgently work together to find the money and reverse this funding cut now, to ensure the Eastern Busway is delivered to the promised timeframe. It is critical we invest in this project and secure the future of our local transport network.” Auckland Mayor Phil Goff told the Times he is worried but holds out hope the matter of funding could change. “I am concerned that, following the completion of stage one of the Eastern Busway this year, there will be a delay of up to two years of the final stages of the project,” Goff said. “However, I am assured that if there is a change in the funding situation, efforts will be made to again bring forward the completion date of the $1.4 billion project.” Auckland Councillor Paul Young, for the Howick Ward, told the Times he was “completely shocked” at the news.
“The possible delay to the completion of the second stage of the Eastern Busway is completely unacceptable and is a huge blow to east and south Aucklanders who have been waiting for the busway for a decade already,” said Young. Prior to the meeting, councillors received no warning or heads-up from Auckland Transport about possible delays to this, the second largest transport investment after the City Rail Link, he said. “To discover these changes through a public agenda with no time to discuss options or find solutions to the funding issue was unbelievable and shows a culture issue with Auckland Transport. That is why I voted against the endorsement of the regional land transport plan,” said Young. “Both south and east Auckland have suffered historic underinvestment in transport from both central and local government. The Eastern Busway is the first opportunity for us to change that story. Once completed it will provide a convenient and reliable connec-
tion from the east to the rest of the region. If we want to earn the confidence of Aucklanders and if we are serious about meeting our emissions reductions goals, we should be speeding the busway up not slowing it down. “I am committed to finding a way to bring the funding for the Eastern Busway back to the earlier years as was originally consulted on by AT. We can’t to afford lose momentum on the progress we are finally making now. There must be a solution and I will work with Auckland Transport, the Mayor and councillors to get the Eastern Busway back on track.” Colleague Councillor Sharon Stewart said they were first alerted to the delay in the Eastern Busway at the Extraordinary planning meeting on Thursday. “I was gutted to find out at the committee yesterday that the $1.4 billion Eastern busway will take an extra two years. I argued that the east had suffered from under-investment for years. “More broken promises from Labour government, more
s

anti-car policy just like Mill Road.” The deferment in completing the Eastern Busway is disappointing and unacceptable for young people, says the Howick Youth Council. Youth council co-chair Danica Loulié-Wijtenburg says that further delays would be inexplicable to most young people. “The Eastern Busway is essential to improving public transport for our community. When built, it will open opportunities across Auckland for public transport users, alongside people using bicycles. “Youth often choose to use public transport to get around their neighbourhoods and their city. They’ve told us they want public transport to get better now — not later. “A student’s trip from Botany to uni in morning rush hour would normally take more than an hour, depending on traffic congestion. Once the busway is complete, alongside the City Rail Link, trips would reliably take only about 40 minutes in rush hour. That’s simply transformative,” Loulié-Wijtenburg says. The Howick Youth Council believes that the deferment is detrimental to Auckland’s aims for greater transport modeshift and emissions reductions — alongside urban housing goals that demand better transport. Central government should work with local government to resolve this delay immediately. An Auckland Transport (AT) memorandum to local politicians
at the weekend said the draft Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) included indicative phasing of investments by Waka Kotahi, CRLL, KiwiRail and AT. “However, as the draft RLTP noted, its proposed ideal expenditure did not match the proposed funding in Auckland Council’s draft Long-Term Plan, although the overall ten-year totals were the same. Both AT and Auckland Council worked to try and resolve this issue,” the memo said. “Due to constraints in funding from Auckland Council and central government, at different times over the 10-year period, AT has had to adjust the indicative phasing of the draft RLTP programme to fit within the funding available in Auckland Council’s final Long-Term Plan. “As a result, the funding for the Eastern Busway delivery programme has been spread out by a further two years to 2027/28, following a Regional Transport Committee meeting - where the draft Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) 2021-31 was considered and endorsed. “It is important to note that this does not mean a reduced commitment to the Eastern Busway programme. Overall, there is actually a proposed increase in funding for the Eastern Busway of $199 million (from $912 million to $1.11 billion) between the 2018 RLTP and the 2021 draft RLTP.” Stage 1 of the Eastern Busway is not impacted, said AT, and is still due for completion later this year.

diverse group of local women engage in conversation and connection as they knit, crochet and stitch. Knitting in Public (KIP) was formed over a decade ago by Kathleen Bennett. She did it with the intention of creating a friendship club. For several years it had a following of six to 10 members. In 2012, it started to grow exponentially and now has around 40 enthusiastic knitters from all over the world. When Kathleen left, the group’s responsibilities and leadership fell on four ladies. One of these ladies, May Smith, says this fun and informal community knitting group has positively affected the lives of all of its members. “Most of us are retired,” May says. “Our children are grown. Knitting is a wonderful place to meet and connect.” The group alternates between
ful for sharing ideas. Another member, Diane, agrees. When she arrived at the library, she could hear the members chatter and enthusiasm through the door. “I wanted to go in there.” “It’s the best group to make friends,” she says. “It saved me.” KIP isn’t restricted to experienced knitters. Some members have been taught and mentored by other knitters. “We’ve very open to any kind of knitter,” May says. Each week KIP has a show-andtell to display the incredible work by members before donated pieces go to the various charities. East health group established By Zoe Garden A public meeting held in March 2021 to discuss the future health needs for east Auckland has led to a community-minded health group being established. Counties Manukau Health stopped funding overnight care at any Urgent Care Clinic across the Counties Manukau Health district from July 2018. On December 15 last year Care Group who runs the Urgent Care Clinic East Care Accident and Medical in Botany Road announced that they would be no longer providing an overnight service; a service that they had been providing for 20 years. This decision caused a large public outcry across the community. On March 31 local MPs Christopher Luxon and Simeon Brown hosted a public meeting with Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) chief executive Margie Apa and board chair Vui Mark Gosche to express and discuss their concerns with the loss of East Care’s overnight service. It was also to participate in a discussion about the future of health care in east Auckland. “The meeting was held to discuss the future health needs of the locality,” Loretta Hansen, chief executive of East Health Trust PHO,
Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown speaking at the East Care meeting. says. Following this meeting, Hansen has been working with Penny Magud, general manager of Locality Services at CMDHB, to establish an Eastern Locality Community Health Review Steering Group.
“identifying current and future health and social care needs of the Eastern locality community”. It is also tasked with “identifying how these needs might be met including potential delivery options and infrastructure requirements”. “It brings together local key community representatives to review the current and future health and social needs,” Hansen says. Each member of the steering group represents a sector of the community. “This is to ensure that CMDHB and PHO hear directly from and work in partnership with health consumers and community members.” The group will aim to deliver a strategy or proposal by July this year. The report that will be prepared for the DHB will outline recommendations around the health and social services the group wants to see being “taken forward by the DHB”. The timeframe enables the group to receive the outcome of the independent review of overnight service requirements commissioned by Counties Manukau DHB. “The CMDHB has always intended to review the overnight services following their decision to no longer provide overnight funding to urgent care providers (East Care),” Hansen says.

The establishment of this group is to ensure Counties Manukau Health hears “directly from and works in partnership with health consumers and community members, living and/or working within the Eastern Locality district”.

Flu jab programme all go Winter has officially begun and the national flu immunisation programme is off to a great start. • Over 1.2 million doses of flu vaccine have already been distributed around the country to GPs, pharmacies and health clinics. • Fifty-seven per cent of those 65 years and over, who are most vulnerable to the impacts of the flu, are now vaccinated. • Following the successful start of the flu programme for those 65 years and over, the availability of Fluad Quad is low. Afluria Quad can also be used for people 65 years and over and it is funded for everyone in this group. Auckland has plenty of stock ready and available to protect local residents, with more than 393,000 vaccines already distributed throughout the city so far, and more available to be ordered if required.

Drs Kidd, Anderson, Lloyd, Martin and Moh welcome new patients
The impacts of flu should not be underestimated and vaccination remains as important as ever. While high rates of vaccination and social distancing drove down influenza rates last season, we mustn’t be complacent about the potential impacts of flu, especially now that the public are actively out and about. Achieving high flu vaccination coverage is a key population health strategy for helping reduce pressure on our hospitals and health care system. Peak flu season occurs between June and August in New Zealand, meaning there is still plenty of time for New Zealanders to act to ensure that flu numbers stay as low as possible. Kiwis who have not yet been given an appointment to get their Covid-19 vaccine are advised to get their flu vaccine now from their local GP or pharmacist.

YOUR HEALTH – WINTER 2021
www.times.co.nz
Men’s health from Dr Davao Mariner June saw the promotion of men’s health week, a global health campaign to focus on health issues all men face and to raise awareness of steps men can take to help address these. Men are already on the wrong side of the health statistics, being more susceptible to conditions such as heart disease, blood pressure and diabetes, are represented at a higher rate in deaths from mental illness and melanoma, and the incidence of prostate cancer is increasing in New Zealand. These are statistics that we need to work really hard on together to significantly improve. Many health issues impacting men are preventable or the impact significantly reduced if caught early. Early intervention is KEY! Some issues can be sorted simply and effectively before they become bigger problems.
If you are concerned about something, speak up, talk it through and get checked by your health professional. Your gut feeling that something isn’t right is a good indicator, trust your instinct and get checked.
THERE ARE KEY SELFCHECKS YOU CAN DO TO BE PROACTIVE: a) Skin shelf check, look for moles that change size, shape or colour and for any lumps or growths that you think may be recent and you haven’t had checked before. b) When in the shower, do a quick check of your testicles to ensure there are no lumps. c) Check in on your mental state and that of your mates. It’s ok to not feel ok and talking about it is the first step towards your improved mental health.
A Times Supplement, June 2021 — 7
Your heart is the engine we need to keep running, an annual check-up by your health professional can prevent serious illness or death, and gives an opportunity to talk with your doctor on ways to improve your physical and mental health and reduce the risk factors. Men over 30 should start receiving their heart checks. When diagnosing and identifying medical issues and solutions, I find that an all-encompassing approach across the physical, mental and social facets of a person’s wellbeing delivers the best patient outcomes. They all interrelate and making a positive step in one area can have a significantly beneficial health impact in another. u Dr Davao Mariner MBChB is a GP at Marina Medical, at Half Moon Bay Marina. He lives in the Howick area with his wife and two pre-school children.

PUTTING A PERMANENT SMILE ON PEOPLE’S FACES For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way. Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about stateof-the-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and rewarding”

she says, keeping herself updated by regularly attending workshops and courses. Most partial dentures have anchors called clasps which are used to retain the denture in your mouth. These can sometimes show and ruin a beautiful smile. “Now we are equipped with technology to resolve this. There are so many
combinations that are now available that is hardly ever the same for each patient. If light metal frameworks have to be used you can be rest assured that they are nickel and beryllium free” she says. With more than 20 years of creating dentures it is no wonder Ugie has clients locally and around the world that sing her praises. Niche Denture Centre has its own onsite laboratory which means you don’t have to wait a week sometimes more for a repair or a reline. These can be taken care of onsite, helping you back into your smile almost immediately. Niche Denture Centre is situated conveniently on ground level with ample parking right outside the building and easy to access even for clients on wheelchairs.

Since Ugie from Niche Dentures has fitted me with a beautiful set of dentures I cannot stop smiling and now have the confidence to step out into the world with a confident smile. Superstar facilitator sought to lead, inspire Life101, which offers life and financial skills programmes to people in prisons and on probation, community groups and schools, is inviting Kiwis to consider a career and mahi like no other. The social enterprise, which has been operating for eight years, delivers workshops around gaining employment, managing and investing money, and softskills concepts like resilience, personal leadership and mindfulness. Life101 is currently looking for a unique and inspiring individual to join its facilitation team and help deliver its comprehensive life skills programmes. Nick Carroll, co-founder of Life101, says the demand for Life101 programmes has grown in the past 12 months, and they’re looking for ‘someone special’ to join the small team as a Programmes Facilitator. “We’re committed to finding someone who wants to be a positive role model in their community, as well as that person we all know who likes to be the ‘life of the party’ - someone who loves being in front of people and never stops putting out positivity into the world. It’s not just about teaching important skills, but also motivating someone to want to put what they’ve learnt into action in their life,” says Nick. Nick says while facilitation experience would be helpful, it’s not a mandatory requirement for the role. “We’re open to taking on someone without a background in facilitation. It’s about finding someone with the X-factor, a passionate, patient people’s person with a great sense of humour, extremely
high energy and desire to help vulnerable communities. We’re looking for someone who can inspire others, is a natural storyteller and can ‘dance in the moment’ in front of a group.” Since founding Life101 in 2013 with head facilitator Phil Moon, Life101 has reached over 5000 people around Aotearoa and has been the catalyst in transforming many lives. “I love meeting people from all walks of life and seeing those lightbulb moments - that’s when you realise that what you’ve taught someone could impact their life for the better,” says Phil. “Working in prisons and probation centres has really opened my eyes to many of the systemic issues facing our communities. It’s nice to be able to show people important skills that can make a profound difference in their lives, especially when they tell me that they’re going to pass these skills on to their children and whānau,” says Phil. The role will involve leading the delivery of one-day and four-day programmes for groups of between 12 and 20 individuals across Aotearoa’s prisons, probation centres and schools. “It would be wonderful to find someone from the local community who is equally as passionate about making a positive change in society as we are. It’s such rewarding mahi and we have some exciting plans to be able to reach and support a lot more people over the coming years,” adds Phil. If you would like to find out more about this opportunity, please email nick@life101. co.nz or visit www.life101.co.nz.

Kiwi natural health exporters hamstrung by ‘outdated’ regulations
Are you looking for a Doctor? At Crawford Medical we are open from 7.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday and have a walk-in GP Clinic on Saturday mornings
New Zealand’s “outdated regulations” for natural health products have struck again, leaving local manufacturers unable to export millions of dollars of New Zealand-made products to key markets, says industry body Natural Health Products New Zealand. Medsafe’s “strict enforcement of outdated rules” means New Zealand exporters of natural health products and supplements will be unable to fulfil export sales, Natural Health Products says. It is calling on Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall to step in to help find a pragmatic solution so the industry can continue exporting and fulfil its contractual obligations to its customers. “No actual rules or regulations have changed, just the enforcement of them, and it puts our exporters in an impossible position. It places their existing customer relationships at risk of long-term damage due to an inability to

meet contracts for supply, and it will stifle their international expansion plans. The logical next step would be considering offshore manufacturing,” says Natural Health Products government affairs director Samantha Gray. For local manufacturer Vitaco this means risking the loss of at least $5 million in export sales (per year) and could result in job cuts if not addressed, she says. “Our business has been blindsided by Medsafe’s decision in November last year to apply

stricter enforcement of an existing regulation in a way that is unworkable” says Craig Kearney, CEO of Vitaco Health Group. “It means that we will be unable to export some of our products to key markets because of this decision and outdated regulations. We understand Medsafe is in a hard position but given how outdated the regulations are and the impact of this decision on Kiwi exporters we think there’s room to apply some common sense.”
There are two issues preventing export of products to international markets. Firstly, the wording on Free Sale Certificates is not accepted by many export health authorities. Secondly, last year, Medsafe changed the Free Sale Certificate Application process so that New Zealand exporters need to sign a declaration that products comply with New Zealand labelling requirements, even for products that will not be sold in New Zealand and were never intended to be.

By Zoe Garden A pharmacy in Pakuranga has become the first to provide Covid-19 vaccinations in Auckland. In April 2021 Director-general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed the Ministry of Health is not considering pharmacies as Covid-19 vaccination sites. This has been rectified as of July as Covid-19 vaccinations are expected to ramp up for general practices and pharmacies. Pakuranga Unichem is among them. On June 11 Unichem opened their doors for vaccinations. They are focusing on designated groups with 65+ being the priority. They have vaccinated about 1000 people. Unichem has previously worked with ethnic community groups and leaders to provide vaccinations and support to members of the public. They participated in a free influenza vaccination service, Community Flu Fighters, which was delivered by pharmacists and targeted people aged over 65 from the Asian community in the Counties Manukau Health District. “We’ve done a lot with the community,” Vicky Chan, the centre manager, says. “We have a wonderful relationship with them.” Chan and her team hope to remove barriers with the help of previously established relationships with the community. Chan says community members

can get stuck behind a language barrier and confusion. “They know us,” Chan says. “We know them. So there’s a level of trust and communication there.” Some community members find it difficult to reach the pharmacy. “We work with community leaders to transport them here,” Chan says. “We’ve work with Shanti Niwas, Bhartiya Samaj and the Korean Positive Ageing Charitable Trust. They’ve all be wonderful and helpful.” Additionally, Chan and her team wish to educate their patients and the wider community on misinformation and any confusion they may have. “There’s a circulation of misinformation,” Chan says. “We want to abate any concerns.”

12 — A Times Supplement, June 2021
Vaccinations for the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand The COVID-19 vaccination rollout for the general population starts from the end of July. Our COVID-19 vaccination programme has built momentum steadily since February. We are vaccinating around 100,000 people a week at the moment. In the second half of the year we hit top speed and everyone in New Zealand aged 16 and over will be able to be vaccinated.
Moving to the general population So far, vaccinations have been made available to those most at risk of getting COVID-19 to limit the chances of it getting into the wider population. With more vaccine supply coming on, and having ramped up our infrastructure, vaccinations for everyone else in New Zealand aged 16 and over (the general population) start from 28 July. This is a very large group of people. To make this flow smoothly, we will break this down by age bands. All people aged 60 plus can book their vaccinations from 28 July. Then, two weeks later, people who are 55 plus. From there, new age bands will be opened up every 2–3 weeks based on confirmed deliveries of the vaccine and the speed of rollout to earlier groups. By mid to late August, invitations should be open for people over 45. By mid to late September, invitations should be open for those over 35, with everyone else being eligible from October.
Invitations Most people will get a direct invitation to book – either by email, text, phone call or in the post. You will then be able to book through Book My Vaccine, a new national booking system that will be online from 28 July, or phone a new national call centre. Availability of booking slots (the date, time and place you can be vaccinated) will vary between district health board (DHB) regions. Once you are eligible to be vaccinated, you can be vaccinated at any time. There is no cut off.

Other ways to get vaccinated As we go through the year there will be other ways for people to be vaccinated. These will include workplace vaccinations and other targeted vaccination events across the country. For some remote rural communities we will vaccinate all age groups at the same time to make it easier for them. Our successful whānaucentred approach to vaccinations will continue for Māori and Pacific communities and those with disabilities.
Even if your age band isn’t open, everyone aged 16 and over will be able to go to Book My Vaccine to register for an invitation from 28 July. Registration means we will be certain to have your correct contact details and when your age group is opened, you will get an invitation telling you it’s your turn to book.

ART
Estuary art winner to be crowned T
he winner of a prestigious environmentally-themed art prize based in east Auckland will soon be unveiled. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Estuary Art and Ecology Award run by Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick. Centre director Vickie Bowers says the award is the only contemporary art prize with ecology at its core and the award ceremony and exhibition are a longstanding highlight in Uxbridge’s arts calendar. Judging this year’s entries is well-known and accomplished Auckland-based writer and curator Francis McWhannell. He’s the curator of the Fletcher Trust Collection, a major private collection of New Zealand art founded in 1962, and also serves as curatorial advisor to the Visions art gallery. McWhannell judged the competitive Aspiring Art Prize two years ago and the Eden Arts Art Schools

Award in 2019 and 2020. He’s written articles for numerous arts and culture magazines and websites and is the author of two books on historical photography. Bowers says the Estuary Art Award asks entrants to consider the plights, pollution and beauty of the Tamaki Estuary and create an artwork that embodies that theme and “inspires and intrigues the community”. She says the Tamaki
Estuary Environmental Forum is coming on board this year as an additional sponsor for the Anniversary Award, joining regular contest sponsors the Howick Local Board, Gordon Harris, and The Rice Family Partnership. “The forum brings together a significant collaboration of local environmental groups,” Bowers says. “Its support strengthens the ecological element of the competition whilst
offering an additional cash incentive of $1500 to the already ample sponsorship, bringing the total prize money to $10,000. “In an acknowledgement of the continued support of the prize from both sponsors and artists, finalists will be displayed in Uxbridge’s Malcolm Smith Gallery and the exhibition extended to include a selection of other entries in our concourse area. “These entries can also be considered for the popular People’s Choice Award, which calls for the community to vote for their favourite artwork, sponsored by The Rice Family Partnership.” People are invited to the award ceremony, at Uxbridge Culture and Arts at 35 Uxbridge Road, Howick, at 2.30pm on July 3. The exhibition runs until August 28 with the People’s Choice Award votes being counted at the close of the exhibition followed by a small award ceremony.

PROPOSAL
Dropping to a knee at Ormiston shopping centre By ZOE GARDEN Love is in the air and a man dropping to one knee to propose at a shopping centre must certainly be proof. The gesture has also achieved a community milestone. Bree (Taupo) and Tasi (Otara) are the first couple to become engaged at Ormiston Town Centre. Tasi and Bree have been together for 10 months. They have a son together. “Her and the little man have become family to me,” Tasi said. “I fell in love with her early on.” After a brief but strong love story, Tasi planned to propose to Bree in her “dream place” – a venue that was fully pink and covered in flowers. The event took
place at Divine Patisserie. “I saw Divine Pattisserie on Instagram,” Tasi said. “I knew I had to take her there.” With her favourite song playing and a handmade storybook celebrating their love and relationship, Tasi dropped to one knee and asked for Bree’s hand. The staff and onlookers were “thrilled to be part of the engagement”. “Ormiston Town Centre was designed to be the heart of a growing community,” Lucy Spratt, external relations executive at Todd Property, says. “We’re proud to be part of moments like these that create memories and define lives.” Tasi says their families and friends are overjoyed.

PARKING INFRINGEMENT FEE Just shopped at New World Botany. Came out to find infringement notice ticket under my wipers. I use mobility parking and forgot to hang my card this once. No other mobility parks being used at time between 8am-9am on Sunday morning. When did this carpark start being policed by Wilson Parking? Where are the warning signs? I am annoyed but also frustrated when I rang Botany Town Centre Management to be told that it is nothing to do with them. If I had parked in any other park it would not cost me $65, or $85 if I do not pay within 3 weeks. If unpaid for 30 days to proceed to debt collection. Really? I believe that there has to be signage in the location because it has to be fair. Also, I often cannot get a mobility park at times where others have taken the parks with a card. It happened yesterday to me but no sign of any parking warden then.

THE FUTILITY OF IT ALL Politicians thinking electrical vehicles will have the slightest effect on earth’s climate? Just 15 mega container ships in 20 days would emit the same amount of CO2 as the entire planet’s car fleet. A Boeing 747 burns up 4 litres of fuel per second and both are set to double in number within the next two decades.
Gary Hollis, Mellons Bay fused state gave the contractors the wrong end in their instructions. It should have been at the Sunderlands/Pigeon Mountain Road end. For it is this intersection at the Half Moon Bay end that has a consistent record over 15 years of regular accidents, both minor with some very serious, and, but for the grace of God, no fatalities (have occurred) at the scene. This intersection has been on AT’s radar since 2005 and, while they have installed pedestrian islands and hi-speed surface tyre grip on the downhill section, both speed and failure to stop remains the crux of the problem. The Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association has been lobbying for many years for better intersection management, by either lights or a mountable roundabout to no avail. AT’s official response has been both procrastination or, and I quote, “We don’t have any fatalities
recorded for this intersection so it is not important.” Can I ask just how many injury accidents and fatalities have occurred at the Bucklands Beach Road end?

MY MOBIGO BUS SERVICE Having noticed the adverts in the Times for a bus to the Half Moon Bay Ferry we duly phoned in, downloaded the app, booked a ride, told friends and neighbours and felt very proud to be using the bus rather than the difficulty of driving to the ferry, attempting to find a park. The very grandly signed Mobigo bus turned up on time with a very polite driver, clean and efficient – but it was the first and last time we could use the service: We live in Pakuranga – Farm Cove to be specific – and are therefore outside the catchment area.
Why? We suffer from the same appalling public transport services the rest of the Howick ward does. Why does the catchment area for this great service exclude a large portion of those who struggle daily with the commute through Pakuranga? The Mobigo bus is perfectly sized, not a lumbering great behemoth and could be a great asset to the district – why the restricted area? Please explain – please reconsider and most of all please keep such a well-thought out service going.

SATURDAY AGE CONCERN TALK I was really impressed with the Age Concern, One Africa and Howick Local Board, plus Independent Living meeting at the Pakuranga netball courts centre, Saturday. It started at 2.15pm and ended at 5.30pm. The many stall holders all spoke about their mental and physical help for the over 65-year-old people who don’t know it is available for them. After their introductions, the public were able to talk to and try exercise at the stalls. Next time it is held I hope more people attend as it was worth the experience. It was free and fabulous food.

Agnew’s Angle

COMMENT
Brilliant Black Caps are world-beaters How fitting it was that cricketer Ross Taylor should score the winning boundary in partnership with Kane Williamson in the eight-wicket World Test Championship final win against mighty India on a saturated Southampton pitch. They are, after all, our greatest Test batsmen with Taylor’s 7564 runs at an average of 45.84 surpassing that of his mentor Marin Crowe’s 5444 at 45.36 and Williamson amassing 7230 at 53.95. At 37 years of age, it could serve as a perfect climax for Taylor although he hasn’t hinted he’s about to retire. Nor would anyone wish him to. Having twice finished runner-up in the 2015 and 2019 0DI World Cups to Australia and England respectively, New Zealand have punched above their weight. They were heartbreakingly unlucky not to have won the latter during a golden over when a Black Cap’s throw ricocheted off Ben Stokes’ bat to the boundary. Now they are the greatest test team in NZ cricket history, having recovered brilliantly from a humiliating away series whitewash against Australia the summer before last. For that, much credit deserves to go to selectors Gary Stead and Gavin Larsen - and their predecessor Mike Hesson who angered the late Martin Crowe by promoting Brendan McCullum to skipper at the expense of Ross Taylor. But it worked, especially at white ball level, with the team gaining confidence from McCullum’s courageous, sometimes reckless, swashbuckling style. McCullum also holds New Zealand’s top test score of 302, having bettered Crowe’s previous record of 299. Overall, his test total was 6453 runs at 38.64. The team has since prospered under the astute leadership of the masterful Williamson who has had the full support of Taylor. Having reached the pinnacle of a wonderful career, wicketkeeper BJ Watling bows out upon deserving the affection and respect of team-mates and fans. Indeed, to quote Winstone Churchill, “This was our finest hour.” The batting heroics of Taylor and Williamson have long been appreciated, as has that of outstanding bowlers Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner. But what has given them a winning edge has been the introduction of rookies Kyle Jamieson and, more recently, Devon Conway who have made a huge impact. Named Man of the Match in the final against India after taking seven wickets, 6ft 8in Jamieson has captured 46 wickets in just eight tests at an incredible strike rate of 14.17 runs. To confirm his all-round status, he has 256 runs at 42.66 Our greatest bowler, Sir Richard Hadlee, took a then world record 434 at 22.29. Southee has 313 at 28.22, Boult 292 at 27.67 and Wagner 229 at 26.40. Incredibly Tom Latham (65.75), Henry Nicholls (64.35) and Williamson (63.26) head the world test batting averages since January 1, 2018, for those who have played a minimum 10 innings. Australia’s Steve Smith (60.3) is fourth over this period and Indian superstar Virat Kohli (52.03) seventh. With a fanatical 1.3 billion people supporting them compared to New Zealand’s 5 million, nowhere in the world are sportsmen more idolised than India’s amazing cricketers who would have been deeply hurt by their convincing defeat. Happily, under Kohli’s leadership, they took it sportingly with hugs for the Black Caps. That, chaps, is cricket the way it should be. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer

TENNIS
Pakuranga Tennis Club named club of the year I
n the year leading up to their Centenary in 2022, Pakuranga Tennis Club has clinched the prestigious Auckland Tennis award of Club of the Year. The award is given to an outstanding club that creates a welcoming and enjoyable environment for members and guests to play tennis and socialise. Tennis Auckland look for good administration, coaching programmes, interclub participation and success, events, marketing and promotion as well as engagement with the local community. They also consider facilities and general club spirit, the strength of their volunteer base, plus support and engagement with Tennis Auckland. Club president Jenny Richardson was thrilled to receive the award at a recent Tennis Auckland function held to celebrate Interclub competition winners and those individuals and clubs that had achieved throughout the year.
Pakuranga had a successful Interclub season across both senior and junior grades and is also in consideration for Interclub of the Year in both competitions. As a result of this success the club is now eligible for promotion to Caro Bowl Reserve Men, Second Grade Men, Ferrier Cup and Presidents after winning and placing in a number of grades. “It was particularly pleasing to see our junior players achieving this year,” Richardson said. “Our junior boys Kevin Li, Keean Jang, Roger Yang and Mikihiro Ukegawa won the Scarboro Junior Boys Caro Bowl competition and were also presented with their awards at the function.” Club spirit is well to the fore at Pakuranga, demonstrated recently by the club’s participation in Tennis Auckland’s ‘Love Tennis’ promotion. Some 50 club members volunteered to make this a success, organising ball games, competi-
tions, kids face painting, a continuous barbeque and coaching activities that resulted in the club welcoming 54 new members over the two days of the promotion Other notable achievements this year have included junior tennis convenor Michelle Savusa, being a finalist in Howick Sports Awards Volunteer of the Year. The club was voted the #1 Kids Sports activity and fourth Most Popular Kids Activity in Manukau City by ActiveActivities, an online marketplace set up to connect parents and carers with providers of kids’ activities. The club’s 100-year history is set to culminate early in the new millennia with a move to a new location in Lloyd Elsmore Park following the incorporation of the club’s current Pigeon Mountain (Ohuiarangi) site under the Tupuna Maunga Authority (ancestral mountains). “The club will share the new
location with other sports organisations whilst maintaining its own identity in a proposed sports hub at the park,” said Richardson. The club is kicking off celebrations with a function to be held in the Bell House family homestead which is preserved today in the Howick Historical Village, Lloyd Elsmore Park. “The Bell family is of particular relevance to the club as the original public meeting called to form a tennis club in Pakuranga was organised by local farmer ‘Dufty’ Bell and Robert Bell was one of our early presidents”, said Paul Tibbutt, who is co-ordinating arrangements for the club’s centenary. A weekend of activities, including a formal dinner, is then planned for the weekend of February 11–13, 2022. Past and present members are encouraged to contact the club secretary at paktennis@xtra. co.nz with name, email and postal address to receive news and details of celebrity events.

Black Caps become masters after world test victory By NICK KRAUSE
A
ll the stars aligned for the Black Caps and their historic victory over mighty India in the World Test Championship, says Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club president Nick Craig. “I was just over the moon. It was a huge reward for the effort and consistency and selection that’s been put in the New Zealand team from the very dark day in South Africa when (Mike) Hesson and (Brendon) McCullum’s team got bowled out for about 45,” says Craig. “The two of them, they’ve resurrected not only the humility of playing the game – which tends to be the New Zealand way – but also of looking for good people and good team members … they’ve blossomed because there has been a consistency in selection.” Craig, whose son Mark is a former Black Caps spinner, says the win will be positive for the game. “I think it will have a big impact on young cricketers. It gives them a

goal now,” he says. “We’re so fortunate at the Howick Pakuranga club because – the season just past – we got two people onto the New Zealand contract list – Glenn Phillips and Brooke Halliday. It’s not just about the males. It’s a superb effort for a local girl to be given that opportunity. I’m pleased she turns out for our club when she can. Her contri-
bution to that club team has been immense.” Craig believes team culture and astute coaching have combined to build a formidable squad. “Guys like (skipper Kane) Williamson, guys like (Tim) Southee – I don’t know enough about Ross (Taylor) to comment – they’re pretty much drivers of that culture,” says Craig.
HOW MUCH DO OUR APARTMENT RESIDENTS LOVE LIVING HERE?
“Timmy can be a bit of a lad but at the same time he’s got a commitment. He’s one of those guys, he gets out of form and everyone gets on the bandwagon to get rid of him, he always comes back and reinvents himself. “You get people in coaching who are specialists in spin or batting or wicket keeping – there’s the odd diamond out there who’s an all-round good coach. The good coaches – and I put my hand up for Hesson here – “I’m not too good at this pace, I’ll get (Shane) Bond in, I’m not too good at batting, I’ll get Craig McMillan in”…that, to me, is part of that coaching because it shows there’s no ego. “Over the years coaches have tended to have a bit of an ego – my way or the highway – and that’s not necessarily right. You can’t coach them as robots. They’re not all the same. “Some you put your arm around and give them a hugh and some you give a kick in the arse because we’re all different and some respond dif-
ferently. The team talk and rousing you associate with rugby doesn’t always work with cricket because of the different personalities that come into the changing room.” The Black Caps victory is this format of the game is particularly special, possibly more so than the one day world championship NZ so very nearly claimed two years ago against England. “White ball cricket whether it be Twenty20 or the 50 over game has really become the money train but if you talk to all these players – and I just relate to another one of our former Black Caps Mitchell McClenaghan at the club – he would have loved to have played test cricket,” says Craig. “You talk to the boys around the first class circuit, they all say the pinnacle is to play test cricket. They may get more money, they may get more opportunity because of frequency of games, but they all want to play tests. As the name suggests, you’re testing yourself against the best.” ➤ World-beaters, p27
