‘IT WAS A FULL INTERROGATION’

hat began as an enjoyable gathering over a couple of quiet drinks for a group of locals ended with them being questioned by police officers in what felt like an overthe-top “interrogation”. But police are defending their actions and say the officers involved acted within the law. Howick man John* told the

Times he and several friends from their sports team were having a quiet drink at The Corner Bar in Picton Street on the night of June 16. They have a routine of playing a match and then stopping on their way home for a couple of beers. John says the people in his group, all of whom are aged in their 40s, were sitting at an outdoor table. They were not intoxicated, being loud, or causing a scene. There were two other people

outside and a handful of people sitting inside. “It was dead quiet,” he says. “We were on our second beer and a wall of police came up in front of the pub. There were at least eight police officers, maybe more. “It was almost like riot formation coming at us. They stood spaced apart like they were forming a wall.” John says the officers singled out his friend for questioning first.

“He was pretty upset about it. They said, ‘Come with me, sir’. “I was like, ‘Oh s**t, has he done something? Is he in trouble? What has he done, is it fraud?’ “It looked like it was an operation to come and get one of us.” John says the officers took his friend a short distance away and questioned him for about 15 minutes. Two officers then approached John and asked him to go with them.

“They took me down the road out of sight of my friends.” He says they asked him where he’d been previously, what he was doing there, had he driven, was he going to drive home, and how many beers he’d had. They also asked him where he lived, what his name is and asked for his mobile phone number and driver’s licence number. “It was a full interrogation,” John says. ➤ Turn to page 5

udy Hohaia was four years old when she was badly burned in an accidental fire. Growing up in Hokianga, Hohaia’s life was permanently changed when she suffered burns from petrol being put in the coal range fire. “I was the burnt black girl,” she says. “I had no friends. I thought it was normal but it wasn’t normal, it wasn’t normal what I went through.” The fire, she told the Times, left her with a lot of inner anger and ugliness. “I would fight a lot at school,” she says. “No matter what you tell a child – ‘it’ll be alright, it’ll be okay’ – you can’t say that because you don’t know that, you’ve never been burnt yourself, never had to walk around with your face burnt. “Back then in the 70s there was nothing for me.” Five years ago, Hohaia became involved in the Burn Support Charitable Trust (BSG) whose goal is to improve the lives of burn survivors and lower the incidents of burn injuries. When she came to Auckland and met Michele Henry, BSG’s events co-ordinator and office administrator, and fellow burns survivors, Hohaia met a “beautiful wāhine (woman) with burns on her face”. “I started crying because it was the first person I’d seen with burns

National’s deputy leader says New Zealand can do better N

icola Willis says voters will have a clear choice at the next general election between an incumbent Labour Government that’s taking New Zealand “backwards” and a National Party that believes the country can do so much better. National’s deputy leader spoke to the Times about issues including the economy, Covid-19, education, law and order and housing during a recent visit to east Auckland hosted by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown.

THE ECONOMY

Willis says come the 2023 general election the country will be looking for “stronger economic leadership” and she believes that’s what the National Party can and will deliver. “There’s been a lot of high talk from the Government and a lot of promises made and not delivered. “So having plans we can execute and can hold ourselves accountable for will be a big part of what National will offer as well.” Willis says the country is facing a cost of living crisis that’s set to continue with Treasury forecasting inflation at very high levels into the future.

COVID-19

“National will certainly be providing the country at the next election with a choice for more disciplined spending, lower taxes and an approach that doesn’t add as many costs or as many bottlenecks in the economy.”

HOUSING

Willis says not enough houses were built to keep up with demand under successive governments. The National Party is committed to ensuring more houses can be built, she says. “What we’ve seen with this Labour Government is it’s sought

to blame landlords for our housing issues and has imposed new landlord taxes. “That’s really backfired by making rent a lot more expensive for tenants. “We’ve now seen four times as many people on the state house waiting list and thousands of people in emergency hotel rooms, so that approach has failed.” Willis says National would get rid of some of the red tape that makes it difficult to build houses and work with local governments on investing in infrastructure needed to support new housing.

Willis says the National Party agreed with the Government’s decision to close the border when Covid first emerged overseas. National also backed policy to financially support businesses to retain their staff during lockdowns as being “sensible”, she says. “We aren’t without praise for the Government’s initial response but what we think crept in is a degree of complacency, for example with the vaccine rollout. “There’s a strong argument that says had more people been vaccinated, Auckland wouldn’t have had to endure the long second lockdown [in 2021] that it did with all of the impact that had on families and businesses.”

EDUCATION

Willis says there are many wonderful teachers and schools across New Zealand, but “unfortunately we are falling back-

wards by a couple of measures”. “The first [problem] is up to 40 per cent of children are now not attending school regularly. “That’s a really high truancy rate and it’s very concerning. “It’s a moral failure and it’s an economic crisis in the making.” She says the second major challenge is New Zealand’s achievements in literacy and numeracy compared to other countries are slipping backwards and compared to this country’s own standards in previous years. “We need to stop that decline, lift those standards up again, and National will do that.”

CRIME

Willis says she has “enormous sympathy” for people impacted by the large number of ram-raid burglaries of retail businesses across Auckland. “It’s so concerning and I feel for those who have had their business wrecked by a ram-raid, but also who live in fear of the next one. “I’ve seen some shopkeepers camping in their shop overnight, so concerned are they to protect them. These are not the signs of a good and civilised society and, absolutely, this is something we need to get on top of.”

KC15469

It would also work alongside landlords to ensure rentals can be affordable and to a high standard, and work with community housing providers to ensure there are “choices available for lower income people and provide a rung on the ladder to home ownership”.

Divisive: Labour attempting to devalue your vote

We’re celebrating New Zealand’s first Matariki public holiday

A key plank of New Zealand’s democracy is that every vote counts, and every person’ s vote counts the same as anyone else’s. Labour is sadly trying to change this. They previously introduced legislation that would see three seats on the Rotorua District Council reserved exclusively for candidates that only voters on the Māori roll could vote for and three that only those on the general roll can vote for. With just 22,000 voters enrolled on the Māori roll compared to 56,000 on the general roll, this would mean Māori voters have more than twice as much voting power in Rotorua as non-Māori. Earlier this year, Labour paused this legislation following overwhelming opposition from around the country, but now they’re seeking to do a similar thing in Canterbury. Everyone in Canterbury currently has an equal vote, whether on the Māori or general rolls, to elect the 14 councillors that represent their region on the Regional Council. But a Bill going through Parliament at present, which Labour helped vote through its second reading, will allow Ngāi Tahu to choose an extra two councillors to sit on the Council without any kind of electoral process

I’m really proud that we’ve delivered on Labour’s election commitment to establish a public holiday to celebrate Matariki. For the first time this year, people here in east Auckland and across the country had the chance to enjoy a mid-winter holiday that is uniquely our own. Matariki heralds the start of the Māori New Year and has increasingly become a time of celebration, not just for Māori, but for many people across New Zealand. By making Matariki a public holiday, we’re ensuring that everyone can spend this special time with friends and family. We know that there are lots of benefits to public holidays and we’ve seen business leaders around the country noting that Matariki has provided a real boost to the tourism and hospitality sectors with lots of families taking mid-winter holidays. Alongside New Zealand’s reputation for manaakitanga and being a beautiful place to visit, te ao Māori is

or say by local voters. These types of proposals go against the fairness of our electoral system, and if Labour is willing to support ideas like these where will they stop? Despite claims to the contrary from the Government and other parties in Parliament, policies like these will only divide New Zealanders and discriminate against non-Māori voters. Kiwis only need to look around the world to see what happens when citizens don’t have equal voting rights or the ability to hold governments to account. Accountability at the ballot box is our best defence against bad governance and the greatest discipline on councillors, as well as Members of Parliament. National totally opposes any attempt to change our democracy without a proper national discussion, and it is a constitutional disgrace that Labour thinks it appropriate to use its power in this manner.

another drawcard for international guests as it’s unique to Aotearoa. Matariki is another great opportunity for us to share our country’s history and culture with the world. It’s a distinctly New Zealand moment and it makes for a distinctly New Zealand holiday where we can come together to pause, reflect and look to the future. As New Zealand reconnects with the world, we’re seeing an increasing number of international visitors return, ready for an exhilarating Kiwi winter break with many planning to

make the most of what is shaping up to be an outstanding ski season. Since welcoming back Australian tourists recently, we’ve already seen an uptick in spending which is great news for businesses here in Auckland and this will only continue to grow from here. Our work to make Matariki a public holiday was built around genuine respect for Matariki mātauranga, te ao Māori, and a strong commitment to the Māori/Crown relationship. Marking Matariki with a public holiday is another step forward and one I’m proud this Government has taken as New Zealand continues to weave together different cultures to create our unique national identity. A police spokesperson says a small number of police staff were conducting routine checks at a handful of licensed premises in Howick at the time on June 16. “This was part of police’s ongoing commitment to remaining highly visible in the community and to provide the public with reassurance. “While this was not part of a wider operation, the checks were carried out in accordance with police powers under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act.” The spokesperson says the police work that night was conducted under sections 267 and 269 of the Act. Section 267 relates to police powers to enter a licensed premises, while section 269 relates to their power to demand information. Section 269 states a constable who has reasonable cause to suspect someone has committed, is committing, or is attempting to commit any offence against the Act may require them to provide their name and address and date of birth. *Name changed to protect his privacy.

TRIBUTE

Lawyer, politician left mark L

ong-time local body politician and Botany lawyer Ken Yee has died. Yee, whose service was held on Saturday, passed away peacefully on June 19. His death notice reads: “Dearly beloved husband of Cora. Loving father to Jacqueline and Laurence. Cherished son of the late Trevor Yee and Mrs Gett Fong Yee and brother to Dawn, Helen, Jean and Murray.” Yee, who was the National Party’s candidate for Manukau East in 1996, 1999 and 2005, had lived in Howick and Pakuranga since 1977 and served two terms as a Manukau City councillor for Howick. His death was acknowledged and his service was commemorated during Auckland Council’s governing body meeting. Cr Sharon Stewart said it was a great loss for the Howick community. Stewart told the Times she was extremely saddened to hear of her good friend’s death.

“We were both councillors on the Manukau City Council serving Howick,” she said. “Ken Yee and I, with the support of Sir Barry Curtis and fellow Manukau Councillors, moved a motion to save Crawford Reserve in Howick, one of the achievements he and I were very proud of. We called a public meeting over the Crawford Reserve which was the old bus depot and then a car yard. “Howick has a lot to thank Ken Yee for, a fellow councillor and lawyer and a long time and loyal supporter of the National Party. Rest in peace my dear friend. You will be missed.” Former Pakuranga MP and cabinet minister Maurice Williamson also paid tribute. “I heard the sad news of the passing of Ken Yee. I wish to express my condolences to his wife Cora and his wider family,” Williamson said. “I first met Ken in the common room at Auckland University in 1972. He held, and

forcibly expressed, very strong political views way back then. “I ran into Ken at a few National Party conferences but it was in 1986 I got to know him well.” Both Yee and Williamson were seeking the National Party nomination for the Pakuranga electorate. “We spent many evenings attempting to convince all the National Party delegates that we were the right person to be their candidate,” Williamson said. “Eventually I was successful and Raewyn and I bought a house in Fisher Parade which tuned out to be only a few doors down from Ken. “Ken always stayed loyal to the party and unsuccessfully sought selection again for the Howick seat in 1990. “After that Ken successfully stood for a seat on the Manukau City Council. We often chatted about issues both local and national. I always valued Ken’s input.”

owick Village Association (HVA) hosted their third Eco Day event in the Howick War Memorial/ Information Centre on Saturday to large crowds. A number of local environmental groups attended to share information and answer enquiries on a range of topics. HVA would like to thank the following teams for their valuable collaboration to make this event such a success – Friends of Mangemangeroa, Forest and Bird Society, Pest Free Howick and East Auckland Trap Library, Auckland Council Live Lightly, Mushroomate, Auckland Beekeepers

Club, Howick Historical Village and Project Uplift. The Hands on Creatures team provided up-close-

and-personal interaction for young and old with their huge range of creatures.

As the Howick Local Board debates the future of the Howick War Memorial building (aka Howick Information Centre) and the premises remain largely out of reach to our community, it is time to take stock on where and how the Howick Village Association (HVA) supports our local community. The Howick Village Association is an incorporated society set up in 2006 to support the local businesses and contribute to economic development in the Howick region. Now anyone with any business knows that businesses cannot survive without the support of their local communities. Howick is no exception and the HVA has been fully committed to working with the community to deliver activities, events, initiatives and celebrations for the community’s benefit. Just to give you some insight into these, I have listed a few of the 49 initiatives in the last 24 months! Howick Market – organised and run by HVA; Howick Village Hop; Christmas Fair (was Midnight Madness); Eco Day; Live and Love Howick campaign; Fun in the Sun; Brit & Euro Car Show Pop-up displays; CCTV upgrades and ongoing maintenance for security in the Village; Village clean-up days with the Beautification Trust; Graffiti removal with the Beautification Trust – ongoing; Pink caravan – supporting Breast Cancer Awareness; Bra collections – supporting Project Uplift; Jammies in June collection – supporting Middlemore Trust; Blankets 4 kids 4 Winter – supporting Rotary Howick; Anzac Display in Fencible Park;

Anzac Sound and Light tribute 2022; Knitted Christmas Tree; Santa’s Mailbox; Chorus cabinet artwork with the Beautification Trust; Fairy lights on trees throughout Howick Village; Street banner flags Whale Tail hosting in the Village; Bicycle workstation project with Rotary Howick; Christmas Food Bank Appeal – supporting Salvation Army. Additionally, the HVA has assisted groups accessing the Howick War Memorial building while it remains ‘closed’ – eg Camelia Project, Howick Art Society, Rotary Howick, Vinyl Sale and Howick Market special events ensuring that some community access is maintained. We will continue to work hard, lobbying the Howick Local Board to have the Howick War Memorial building available to the community through a well-managed and actively promoted programme run by the HVA. A supportive community leads to a vibrant business centre and we thank you for your continued support. Ken Scott Chair, HVA

Since leaving school, Dr Murray has built a research career that combines her experience as an athlete and her expertise as a neuroscientist with the goal to improve brain health in New Zealand. During her time at Howick College, Dr Murray learned to balance the demands of sport and academic performance, skills that carried her through her undergraduate and PhD study at university. “The staff were incredibly supportive and provided opportunities to expand my leadership skills and develop my interests in diverse subjects,” Dr Murray said. “I also developed a strong sense of community and service and I hope that my academic career encourages future students to be curious and persevere with their passions.” Miles Stratford, presiding member of the Howick College Board, said it was a privilege to bestow these awards on students who had gone on to achieve at the highest level. “The whakapapa of the college and our alumni are intertwined. Recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, Tex Edwards, never thought of himself as academic and never imagined he would be honoured by his old high school. With more than 30 years’ experience in international banking, investment management and infrastructure deployment, he is perhaps best known as founder of the mobile phone company 2degrees – and subsequently ending the telecommunications duopoly in New Zealand. “I was proud to serve the New Zealand community…thank you [Howick College] for honouring me and the team I worked with,” he said. Edwards says he learned the importance of building strong networks while at Howick College. Being able to connect with peers of similar interests and fit in with new groups has served him well over the years. “When times are tough [especially] in the hellish days of a business start-up, friends and networks help you to breathe.” Dr Lim considered herself an “average kid” growing up and

20km on a single wheel

Light enters race for council seat By CHRIS HARROWELL

T

he race for the two local seats on Auckland Council is starting to heat up as another candidate enters the contest with the slogan: “It’s time for change”. Damian Light says he’s standing as a “true independent” for one of the two Howick ward council seats. Light finished third behind current ward councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young at the 2019 local-body elections. He finished fourth in the 2018 Howick ward by-election caused by the death of councillor Dick Quax. Light says it would be an honour and a privilege to serve as east Auckland’s representative on the council. “I was humbled by the support I received when I stood in 2018 and 2019. “In the three years since, I’ve been working full-time in a senior business performance and improvement role for AsureQuality, a large New Zealand-owned commercial organisation.

“I’ve also used this time to deepen my understanding of governance through professional development and practical experience for commercial and not-forprofit organisations.” Light says he lives in the heart of Botany and enjoys everything east Auckland has to offer. He’s enjoyed volunteering alongside other passionate locals to make the community safer, promote local tourism, and provide opportunities for local youth, he says. “During this time I’ve spoken to countless residents, business owners and community leaders who are frustrated with the lack of vision, progress and accountability that’s holding our city back. “The same issues impacting Auckland three years ago remain unaddressed – transport poverty, housing inequality, inadequate climate action, wasteful spending, and poor communication. “I’ve seen council do good and I know there are some amazing people working

within the organisations, but they’re being let down by poor leadership from the top.” Light says the city deserves a more ambitious, disciplined and diverse council. “Significant change is happening across Auckland and we need leadership that can manage and drive the transformation council so desperately needs. “The first decade of the super-city [council] has been marred by financial mismanagement, vanity projects and wasted opportunities. “We have the chance to ensure the next 10 years unlocks the incredible potential Tamaki Makaurau Auckland has.” Light says he firmly believes his skills in business improvement, combined with his governance experience and passion for the community, are needed to move the city forward. “Doing the same thing and expecting a different result will only end in disappointment. It’s time for change.” The 2022 council elections

will be held by postal vote on October 8. The Howick ward has two seats on the council’s governing body, which makes decisions impacting the city’s residents. Councillors attend committee meetings and workshops, set policies, review the council’s performance, vote on budgets, make bylaws, and are involved in regulatory matters. They make decisions for the region relating to housing, the environment, transport, community facilities, and council services, among others. Former Pakuranga MP and National Government Cabinet Minister Maurice Williamson recently announced he’s standing in the Howick ward for a seat on the council this year. ➤ Go online to www. voteauckland.co.nz for more information on how to enrol to vote and stand as a candidate.

Why this Art Course is so Successful. Art course for beginners has been a huge success in the UK.

From humble beginnings back in 2009, this step-by-step art class for beginners has become incredibly popular and has grown to over 150 branches in the UK and teaches over 6,000 new artists every week. The success is down to the professional quality of the curriculum, nothing has been left to chance and the students get real value, fantastic learning as well as a fun, sociable experience.

Especially Designed For Beginners.

Although there are many good art courses available, most are intimidating for the outright beginner. They need somewhere safe and supportive to learn and gain confidence. The Seasons method of teaching takes you from the very basics up to an intermediate level and the tutors are extremely supportive, everyone is encouraged to follow their own style of expression. The other thing we focus on is the value of time, it seems that most other classes run for 1-2 hours and for 8-10 weeks. We prefer that our students have time to settle in and so we make sure our classes are 3 hours, with refreshments, and run for 14 sessions so that students can really take time to explore their new found skills.

It’s A Great Way To Meet New People.

One of the fantastic things about the course is that you get to meet people who have the same interest as yourself. It doesn’t take long for people to bond as a group and in a short time, we have teams of new friends organising to either complete assignments together or have a social trip out to art galleries and such.

Now You Can Paint & Draw People, Pets & Places.

Over the 3 month course students explore four different media: Drawing, Painting with Watercolour, Acrylics, and Oil Pastels. Discover how to paint faces, figures, friends, family and stunning landscapes. You’ll also learn the artists’ secrets to create beautiful pieces of original art. Imagine the delight when you present your loved ones with personal portraits, or the pleasure of capturing your pet’s image on canvas. One thing is for sure, your friends and family will be absolutely amazed and delighted at what you’ve achieved.

Art Is Good For The Soul.

There is now a worldwide acknowledgement that taking time out to learn new skills, focus and contemplate while being in a supportive environment is vital for wellbeing - Art classes are recognised as ideal past-times and at the forefront of this healthier life choice. As was documented recently, it’s all to do with living a more satisfying and well balanced lifestyle that aids longevity as well as life satisfaction and stimulating mental agility.

Helping you fundraise smarter, NOT harder!

We use the image of a giraffe in our business. Why? If you think about it a giraffe has a different perspective to most, if not all, of the animals around it. Experience On Tap could be your “Business Giraffe.” How? By using our many years of business management experience (more than 100 years between us) to focus on your issues and opportunities, your ideas and problems. So what is a Business Giraffe really worth? We don’t know what it could be worth to your business. Your answer depends on many factors including the issues and opportunities that you have (and haven’t) identified. It may involve the ideas and problems that you would like to address but never get to the top of your to do list. The real value of your Business Giraffe lies in what you do with the thinking time that interrupts being busy. What we can do is share with you what our Business Giraffe was worth to one client. Some background. They are a retail franchise employing more that 20 staff based in a shopping centre. We had no experience in that industry or products and made that clear before we took on the assignment. This is where the Business Giraffe comes to the fore. We observed what happened and asked lots of dumb questions to help us understand what was going on. The results:

In 2019 a private facebook business group “Howick Click” was created by local business owner and event organiser Bo Burns. She relocated her business back to Howick after being based in East Tamaki for 15 years and was looking to connect with like-minded business owners, and nothing was available locally. For the first two years, the click group had only 45 members that Bo had personally invited and now a whopping increase to 717 business owners and managers and is growing daily. The reason for the growth was the week before the first Covid lockdown, Bo saw and spoke to many local business owners extremely distressed, and needing support and guidance more than ever. She arranged an emergency meeting at The Prospect where 60 local business owners turned up. This was the beginning and launch of the popular “Click Events” that have been a sellout event for two years now of 100 local business owners attending. The purpose of “The Click” group is for East Auckland business owners to connect, learn, network and grow. Bo’s passion and drive is helping local businesses succeed and promoting a prosperous economy in East Auckland by supporting locals. To join the Click group – go to www.facebook.com/ groups/howickclick or email howickclick@gmail.com for more information. This week’s event (June 30th) was another sellout, with two business speakers, live music, cheese and cocktail tastings, live art, goodie bags over $2000 of spot prizes donated by local businesses and more. Next event is in August.

Pam Slater from Howick’s newest business, The Coaching Clinic, says she hears this stuff every day. “When it comes to getting into better shape, ‘eating better’ is the most important step. The only problem? Most of the advice out there simply isn’t sustainable. Actually, it’s just setting you up to fail.” Pam talks to women every day who are trying to muster up all the willpower they can find to diet their way to becoming healthier, fitter and stronger…but they still aren’t getting the results they want. The good news? There’s a better way. You can absolutely: • Eat better, without dieting or feeling deprived. • Move better, without the gruelling workouts. • Feel energized all day, so you can enjoy all the things you want and need to do. • Get the results you’ve always wanted and build the skills you need to stay that way for good. Pam started The Coaching Clinic after her own transformation. “I was the typical busy corporate woman. I’d put my work and career first for decades. I became unhealthy, unfit and secretly unconfident. But I chose to change. In fact, it was such a powerful change for me that I decided to keep going. Now I specialise in helping other professional women change their lives through exercise, nutrition and mindset!” Pam has limited spots available for 1-1 coaching from July. Get in touch today.

“Hayley is very professional and easy to deal with. She understood my requirements and gave good advice and suggestions. I would recommend Hayley for all your social media and website needs”. B.Naran

COLLINS NEW PAKURANGA ROTARY PRESIDENT In keeping with Rotary International timetables, Rotary clubs all around the world conduct an annual roll-over of leadership close to the middle of the calendar year. For Pakuranga Rotary Club, this event took place at the Howick Club last Monday night when about 55 members, partners and guests witnessed the handover of the presidents’ chain of office from Allan Vester to Mike Collins. After a buffet meal, Vester expressed appreciation for his outgoing board members (directors) and others who had contributed to his challenging year in office. He was also pleased to announce that Ian Handisides would be the recipient of his President’s Cup award for loyal service over the year in a variety of roles. As the new president, Collins used the 2022 - 2023 Rotary Theme ‘Imagine Rotary’ as the principal focus for his visions for the

Among these is a desire to reinvigorate those projects and activities for which the club has had a proud history but also to initiate new plans with a view to attracting particularly younger people to the club as members, “a happy blend of past and future in the usual spirit of fellowship and the desire to serve our community”. His incoming board was introduced compris-

ing a mix of long-standing Rotarians with some of the newer members. Keynote speaker on the night was former National Party cabinet minister and Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson who, in his inimitable style, gave an entertaining and enlightening exposé of his working, political and diplomatic background over the years, said Pakuranga Rotary’s Peter Woodcock.

ment, a factor that is significant for teens, Taylor says. “It’s such a formative period in your life,” he says. “I think having some good role models and support is important.” Taylor and Eng both came into their roles last year. Employed by the Church Centre as a Lay Pastor responsible for youth work and worship/ music planning as of last year, Taylor is completing a diploma in Christian leadership at Laidlaw College. He lives locally with his grandfather Kerry. A former head boy at Botany Downs College, Eng is a youth worker that the Church employs at Edgewater College through a 24-7 YouthWork programme. He is working towards becoming a teacher. “Growing up in the youth group, it’s great to be able to take the same position and inspire the young people around us,” Eng says. Taylor echoes these sentiments. “A lot of my youth

group friends are still my friends,” he says. “Life-long friendships are formed.” At the Friday night youth programme, Taylor says he never has to ask the students to put their cell phones away, because “they are very rarely using them anyway”. “It’s an interesting contrast to how you see the youth a lot of the time, being ‘glued to their phones’, so to speak,” Taylor says. “Despite the world being more connected today than ever before, we see more and more disconnectedness, especially in our young people. I believe that what we offer on Friday night is a place of authentic connection and community with others. Something that an online game or social media cannot truly replicate.” Eng agrees. “We want this space to be a place where we can grow community and relationships.” Visit www.ecw.org.nz

Botany college students strike gold in artifical intelligence challenge project A team of five from Botany Downs Secondary College has struck gold in the annual Imagine Cup Junior AI (Artificial Intelligence) for Good Challenge. Last week Microsoft announced the top 10 regional winners. Thousands of students aged 13-18 from Australia and New Zealand participated in the challenge. They had to submit creative ideas to solve some of the world’s biggest issues using the power of AI, business enterprise, and innovative skills. “BDSC Commerce integrated Imagine Cup Junior in their Year 10 Business Pathways classes,” Shraddha Sharma, head of commerce, said. They imagined how artificial intelligence, robotics and machine learning could be applied to real world social, cultural, health, or environmental challenges. Students also learned about Microsoft’s ethical approach to AI.

“Out of 450 team submissions, one Year 10 team Bye to Germs won the Australia and New Zealand Regional Award — an outstanding achievement by Syri Albrett-Stafford, Taki Chen, Vidhita Bhatti, Sonia Leung and Starz Tawhara,” Sharma said. Bye to Germs’ winning idea was to create a germ scanning app to improve hygiene in people’s daily lives which includes accessibility for the blind or visually impaired. The app detects the percentage of harmful bacteria on different surfaces. “The team used their excellent communication and collaboration skills and applied critical thinking and creativity to come up with a breath-taking array of inventive concepts and plans,” Sharma said. Sharma received the 2022 Microsoft Teacher Commendation Award for his effort and for being the most engaged teacher.

LITERATURE

Agnew a finalist A

ward-winning children’s writer Leonie Agnew, of Pakuranga, is a finalist for a national junior fiction award. Agnew, a teacher, is in the mix again, this time in the 2022 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults which attracted a record 199 entries. Hers is one of 28 titles announced as finalists. She was declared one of the Wright Family Foundation Esther Glen Junior Fiction Award category finalists with The Memory Thief (Penguin Random House NZ). In this category, the judges said the finalists stood out with not only original concepts, but also accomplished world-building, authentic characterisation and settings and, ultimately, well-written stories for this important age group. The winners of each of the six main categories — picture book, junior fiction, young adult fiction, non-fiction, illustration and te reo māori — will take home $7500 and will then be in the running to be named the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year, with a further $7500 prize money. In addition, the judges will award a Best First Book prize of $2500 to a previously unpublished author or illustrator. The ceremony to announce the winners is in Wellington on August 10. The Times last month reported Agnew had won the Storylines Tessa Duder Award, a national competition for a young adult manuscript. The winner gets a publishing

deal with Australasian book publisher Walker Books Australia. The award is named for celebrated Kiwi author Tessa Duder. The manuscript is currently titled The Impossible Story of Hannah Kemp. With regard to these current awards, the judges said it is the highest number of submissions ever received for the awards, “the preeminent celebration of publishing for young people in New Zealand”. “Competing across six main categories, the 2022 finalists offer New Zealand’s young readers an educative, engaging and engrossing selection of books with a uniquely Kiwi flavour,” convenor of judges Pauline

(Vaeluaga) Smith said. “This year’s entries explore a vast range of topics, including protest, autism, gender equality, racism and history, providing a platform for thoughtful and, hopefully, some gritty discussions. “These big topics are so important for sparking conversations with tamariki and rangatahi. Being able to think about and discuss them critically is crucial given the disruptions over the past few years and the rise of misinformation young people now face.” Smith said it is wonderful to see authors having fun with themes for younger readers and that plenty of the finalist books will delight and entertain. The growing strength of books with te ao Māori world view and the growing number and quality of titles in te reo Māori also stood out to this year’s judges. Several of Agnew’s books have been shortlisted for or won awards, including the Tom Fitzgibbon Award in 2010, the Junior Fiction Section, the Children’s Choice Junior Fiction section and the Best First Book Award of the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards 2012, and the Master of the Inkpot Competition in 2015. She has also been the recipient of a writing residency at the University of Otago. Agnew grew up in Howick and attended Baradene College for four years, then Howick College for a year.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME

On June 6 at Botany Town Centre, I fell and suffered a head injury. I want to thank very much the young man and the two off-duty nurses who came to my aid so kindly and efficiently. Also to the two St John’s nurses who reassured and helped me.

WELCOME BACK THE WARSHIPS

I couldn’t agree more with Peter Fahey (Sunday Star Times). We need to welcome back US Navy warships, nuclear or otherwise, and enlarge our own navy in the process. Clearly China and Russia wish to take control both in the Pacfic, Asia and Europe and inevitably the South Pacific thereby clipping the United States’ military wings. China already owns land in 33 countries, including ours, many on strategic trade routes or, in quite a few cases, military bases, one right next to a US base. The time for blinkered, small town and naive politics and a growing dependency on China is over. The dependency and power Russia exerted over NATO countries by their dependence on Russia’s oil and gas resulting in the tragedy that is Ukraine should serve as a warning to New Zealand. When China marches unheeded into Taiwan which is just around the corner, it may then already be too late.

in the mid-1950s. National was in government 1949 -1957. During the Second National Government (1960 — 1972), the following gangs appeared: Hell’s Angels, (1961) Mongrel Mob (1962), Head Hunters (1967), Highway 61 (1968), Epitaph Riders (1969), Black Bulls (1970) later named Black Power (1971). In late 70s the White Supremacy emerged. In 1978 came Devil’s Henchmen followed by the Road Knights in 1979 under the Third National Government (1975 -1984). During the nine years National was in power (2008 — 2017), MP and former leader Judith Collins served as Minister of Police, of Corrections, of Justice — three portfolios giving her a good understanding of the criminality in New Zealand and the root causes of crime. If National has the answers, why was the gang problem not resolved then, Mr Brown? In Norwegian, German and Dutch prisons, there is a focus on rehabilitation. The punishment is taking away their freedom. The inmates are prepared for the life outside through education, job trainings, therapy and activities. Since 2007, Norway is helping inmates to find accommodation and work with a steady income before release. The recidivism rate is one of the lowest in the world at 20 per cent.

PRESERVE THE TREES

Mayor Phil Goff wants to tax the Auckland ratepayers $13.3 million to create an urban forest. However, due to the Auckland Council housing policy of replacing one house with five dwellings, a forest of mature trees have been cut down by developers. In addition, the Tupuna Maunga Authority has cut down many mature trees and wants to cut down more (at ratepayers expense). Kauri trees were planted alongside Mt Smart Road (an unsuitable environment) and most have since

OPEN LETTER TO AT Re: Auckland Transport’s (AT) latest memo re Sunnyhills School Safer Streets Programme. Dear Auckland Transport, Myself and others in and around Fordyce Avenue remain mystified as to (a) why you continue with and (b) how you justify this expensive and abysmal project. At the risk of repeating what has gone before, in simple terms: ➤ There never was or ever has been an accident around Sunnyhills School in at least 40 years, if ever. The cost of this temporary and unnecessary experiment must be huge. It is highly likely that should AT ever decide on a final design, there will be no funding available to complete it. ➤ Changes in behaviour take no account of the fact that 3 point turns, children crossing the street from behind parked cars, cars parking over driveways etc have shifted and

now occur just over the hill and out of sight of the school. I would venture that the referred to responses in support of AT’s efforts to date do not represent the view of locals who live in Fordyce Ave but are the views of those who visit for 10 minutes, morning and afternoon. The once pretty entrance to Fordyce Ave has now been disgracefully disfigured for at least 18 months and based on AT’s latest response, looks like remaining so for at least another year. As witnessed by those of us who live here, the longer this goes on the uglier it becomes with thriving weeds and dying plants filling grotesque plastic planter boxes, leaves and other detritus building up behind them, red reflective bollards and ineffective speed bumps adding insult to injury aesthetically. A solution for your consideration. Remove all the bollards, planter boxes, line painting etc and

died, if they had grown how would they have been managed? Why is there an obsession with growing native trees when many exotics are more useful for the fruit, nuts and the timber they provide. Plant trees yes, but preserve the ones we have

to their 7.3 tons. India’s per capita is 1.91 tons. This attitude of “what difference can I make, I’m just one person” is what has got us in the mess we’re in. New Zealand has a long way to go before we can compare ourselves favourably with other countries.

CARBON CRAZY? YES WE ARE

$450K FOR PROPOSED CROSSING

Arthur Moore, Pakuranga

Ian George’s assertion (June 22) that New Zealand’s contribution to global CO2 levels is insignificant compared to other countries is misleading and incorrect. China may contribute 30 per cent of world emissions compared to our 0.17 per cent, but it is home to 290 x our population. Our emissions per capita is almost equal to China, 7.14 metric tons compared

Martin Spinks, Mellons Bay

I read in last week’s, June 22, edition of the Times of Auckland Transport’s (AT) proposal to spend $450,000 building a new pedestrian crossing on the Pakuranga Highway. I decided to visit this area and get some facts. Starting just west of Grammar School Road and walking west it took me six minutes to walk to the pedestrian crossing

return Fordyce Ave to its former glory. Based on history safety issues won’t change. AT will not be embarrassed by having to announce, sometime in the future, that although they have sympathy for the experiment, there are in fact no funds to complete it. If it would help, myself and others would be pleased to remove the offending material for AT thus saving further unnecessary cost. As an observation, I often drop my granddaughter off at Glendowie School in the morning. This school is on a main thoroughfare with much higher traffic volumes than Sunnyhills Primary. Their modus operandi is to put a few cones down the street for, say, 30 metres at crossing time, man the crossing signs as per normal and everything works swimmingly! Why don’t you try it?

Bary Williams, Sunnyhills

opposite Saint Kentigern College. Using the same starting point it took me four minutes to walk east to the pedestrian crossing opposite Glenmore Road. Incidentally, I did not see another pedestrian during my walk. In my opinion these funds could be used for sensible higher priority projects rather than spending $450,000 on this project. I’m not sure if AT really care what we think. They have a steady income flow from ratepayers — 34 per cent of our rates go to AT and they spend it on such crazy projects such as the 68 T3 cameras spread over a 2.3km section of Onewa Road or the highly dangerous cycle/vehicle divider in west Auckland. Maybe a new mayor will bring some accountability to AT. Here’s hoping.

Gymnastics club celebrates record numbers The Howick Gymnastic Club’s annual recreational gymnastics competition has attracted a record number of entries this year. This year the Howick Gymnastic Club has seen 568 competitors from across Auckland competing in the three-day event — compared to around 400 gymnasts in previous years — designed to give the region’s recreational gymnasts a chance to show off the skills they have been practising all year. “This is a big time of the year for gymnastics when competitions are held nationwide for gymnasts of all levels,” says Howick Gymnastic Club centre manager Monique Gapes. ‘It’s fantastic that our recreational event has attracted so many entries this year. That’s great for our club and great for the sport. Competitions are an important fundraiser for the club that relies on the support of the

community to keep operating.” Boys and girls aged 5-17-yearsold have competed in artistic gymnastics this Matariki weekend [June 24-26] and were judged on the skills they have mastered, artistry and form. This year — as well as artistic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling — there was for the first time rhythmic gymnastics. “It’s a chance for the competitors to show off their routines, for parents to see the progress their children have made and for everyone to have some fun which is so important in keeping kids excited and motivated about sport,” Gapes says. “The last 2.5 Covid years have tested the club, which has been a part of the local community for more than 40 years,” says Gapes. “We’re thrilled and very grateful that this competition is so well supported and invite anyone interested in gymnastics to drop by the club for information.”

STANLEY MAKES GAMES SQUAD H

alf Moon Bay fighter Wendell Stanley from Revill’s Boxing Gym in Pakuranga has been selected as one of eight boxers to represent New Zealand at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. It’s been a busy few months for the 21-year-old, with wins in April at the delayed 2021 National championships in Whanganui. Winning the North Island Golden Gloves in June, with international competition in Thailand as well as beating the Australian #2-ranked boxer at an international tournament in Auckland five days after competing at the Golden Gloves. It was announced last Thursday that Stanley was part of the squad. Lance Revill, head coach at Revill’s Gym, is delighted. “I couldn’t be more proud of the young lad who started training in 2015,” said Revill. “So proud of Wendell. He works so hard on consistently getting better and this is a fantastic achievement for him.” Stanley flies out next week to Belfast, Northern Ireland, for a training camp with other competing countries at the games, and then it’s on the Commonwealth games starting on July 28.
