A MoE official attended a meeting at the school with parents about the RSE guidelines earlier this year.

Chua offered to arrange for Chinese-speaking translators to attend to help parents who needed them but the offer wasn’t taken up.

She believes that prevented some parents from participating meaningfully in the school’s health curriculum consultation and she’s disappointed the MoE has published the guidelines in English only with no translations.

Chua says she met with Mellons Bay School principal Colleen Margison and “encouraged her to be open and consult our whole school community by enabling translation as we have 1/4 of our families who speak ESOL [English as a second language]”.

She also printed a flyer detailing her concerns about the guidelines to distribute to other parents.

“I did that ... handing out flyers and managing to explain in broken Mandarin to a lot of parents what was happening, that girls would be told they could become

boys and vice versa. I went and stuck flyers under the windscreen wipers of as many cars as I could find.”

She says when she went to distribute them again the next day, Margison told her she was entitled to her opinion but if she kept handing out the flyer the school would have to take action against her.

Chua also made a verbal presentation, which was filmed and published online, about the issue to the school’s board.

MoE Hautu (Deputy Secretary) Te Tai Raro (North) Isabel Evans says Mellons Bay School’s staff and board are committed to supporting a culture where “diversity is valued and all learners/ akonga and staff, including those who identify as LGBTQIA+, are disabled, have learning support needs, are neurodiverse, or from diverse ethnic communities, feel they belong”.

Evans says an information evening was held to communicate the work under way at the school to support student well-being with caregivers.

It featured an introductory presentation on the newly-released Mental Health Education Guide and the updated RSE guidelines.

“These guides provide advice around school governance, management and curriculum in English-medium schools,” Evans says.

“As such they are only published in English. However, as happened in this case, our local Te Mahau team can offer to run sessions with translators to support ethnic community groups’ participation in their school’s curriculum.

The RSE guide recommends exploring gender stereotypes as a means of promoting critical inquiry, reflection, and social-action skills related to issues of equity, gender, body image, risk and safety, Evans says.

“Ministry curriculum guidance and endorsed resources do not promote teaching children their bodies are wrong.

“The RSE guide promotes challenging unhelpful stereotypes such as those that may limit aspirations, opportunities and careers.

“Key learning in the RSE is organised according to curriculum levels which provides developmentally- and age-appropriate guidance on what teachers can include in the health curriculum.

“From year 7, ‘hormonal changes’ in puberty are described as a part of the key learning.”

Evans says parents and caregivers have the legal right to withdraw their children from any aspect of the health curriculum by writing to their school’s principal.

Police seeking help after Luxon’s office vandalised  By CHRIS HARROWELL

ultiple MPs’ offices in Auckland were vandalised by a group protesting the military conflict in Gaza in the Middle East.

National Party leader and incoming Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s Botany electorate office was among those splashed with red paint overnight on November 23 by the group Tamaki for Palestine.

ACT Party leader David Seymour’s Epsom office and numerous other National Party MPs’ offices, including those of Dan Bidois, Judith Collins, Paul Goldsmith, Melisa Lee and Simon Watts, were targeted also.

News media reported the group sent a press release about their actions saying

the National and ACT politicians are “complicit in the deaths of thousands in Gaza” and the paint represents them having ”blood on their hands”.

The group is understood to be calling on National, ACT and New Zealand First to call for a ceasefire of the war in Gaza and for the New Zealand Government to cut diplomatic ties with Israel.

Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins last week called for a ceasefire in the conflict.

Luxon labelled the move “unhelpful” and said conditions must be met for a ceasefire to work.

Israel has been carrying out a military action in Gaza since a terror attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas claimed the lives of about 1200 people in Israel

on October 7.

Police have publicly released a photo of a person they want to speak to in relation to the vandalism carried out at Auckland MPs’ offices.

The person in the image is wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, black shoes, and a black cap and Covid facemask. He has gloves on and is carrying a white object in one hand.

Detective Inspector Callum McNeill says police obtained the CCTV image in relation to an incident of wilful damage at an office on Earnoch Avenue in Takapuna at about 1.30am on November 23. The office is understood to belong to National Party North Shore MP Simon Watts.

ing anyone who knows who they are to get in touch,” McNeill says.

“Likewise anyone with information about this incident, or similar reports of wilful damage in the early hours, is asked to contact police so we can hold these offenders to account.”

A spokesperson for Luxon told the Times: “We support the right of individuals and groups to freely express their views, but everyone should do so legally, respectfully and peacefully.”

Man imprisoned over fatal assault on former flatmate “

ne of the men convicted over the death of east Auckland personal trainer Wiremu Arapo has been sentenced to prison.

Arapo, 27, was found dead at his home in Minerva Terrace, Cockle Bay, after it caught fire on October 20, 2020.

Police eventually arrested and charged Sean Hayde and Gregory Hart over Arapo’s death.

The pair went on trial at the Auckland High Court before a jury and Justice Geoffrey Venning on September 11.

Hayde, who lived in Bucklands Beach, was found guilty of Arapo’s murder and perverting the course of justice. He was also found guilty of assault and threatening to kill in relation to a domestic violence incident involving a former partner.

Hart was found guilty of manslaughter and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Forensic evidence showed Arapo died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries to his head and neck.

The two of you agreed to set fire to the property to destroy the evidence.”

Hart, 35, appeared in the Auckland High Court on November 24 to be sentenced.

Justice Venning’s sentencing notes in the case state Hayde and Hart were close friends.

In the first half of 2020 Hayde introduced Hart to Arapo, who was his boxing trainer, and in about July that year Hart moved into Arapo’s Minerva Terrace home.

Problems developed between the two flatmates at the same time Hayde began a sexual relationship with one of Arapo’s female friends.

“You were often late with your payments of rent and general expenses,” Justice Venning told Hart. “Mr Arapo was an organised and motivated person. He was annoyed you did not keep your part of the house tidy and he was frustrated at your attitude and lack of motivation.”

The situation deteriorated and

on October 15, 2020, Arapo gave Hart notice to move out.

Arapo’s friendship with Hayde had broken down due to Hayde’s relationship with Arapo’s female friend. On October 17 Hayde told Hart he was about to turn on Arapo and was going to “kick his teeth out”.

Two days later Arapo messaged Hayde warning him about how he should treat Arapo’s female friend.

“This message seems to have been the tipping point,” Justice Venning said. “Mr Hayde became aggravated to the stage the next day he convinced you to join him in a plan where the two of you

would go to Mr Arapo’s property at Minerva Terrace and give him a beating.”

Hayde and Hart consumed alcohol in the afternoon of October 20 and then went to Arapo’s house to assault him. Hart asserted he was not involved in the assault, but the jury and Justice Venning rejected that.

The jury found Hart guilty of manslaughter rather than murder because he lacked murderous intent and did not appreciate or understand Hayde would act with murderous intent during his assault on Arapo, the judge said.

Hayde suggested the pair set the scene on fire and turn on the oven to make it look like the blaze was accidental.

“The two of you agreed to set fire to the property to destroy the evidence, which included Mr Arapo’s body, and an accelerant was used to do so,” Justice Venning said.

The judge sentenced Hart to serve 11 years and four months in prison.

Hayde is scheduled to be sentenced on February 29 next year.

Pair arrested after fleeing driver incident Two people are in custody following a fleeing driver incident across Auckland on Monday, including through Botany.

At around 5.20am, police were alerted to a vehicle being stolen from an address in Francis Street, Hauraki.

Inspector Rod Carpinter said the vehicle was located by the Police Eagle helicopter in the Birkenhead Village shops and had fled from police after being signalled to stop.

Police spiked the vehicle as it got onto the motorway, however it has continued travelling southbound through the city and onto the Southern Motorway.

The offenders then drove to Botany where they have dumped the vehicle and stole another one.

“The pair has driven

across South Auckland towards the airport, then along State Highway 20 through the Waterview Tunnel and towards Auckland City,” Carpinter said.

“They have continued onto the Southern Motorway, heading back to the Ōtara area where it has been spiked again.

As the vehicle approached the Princes Street off ramp, the vehicle has caught fire and the occupants have surrendered to police.”

Two people were arrested without incident and police enquiries are continuing.

“Police are aware of the hazards these types of events can cause and we thank the public for their cooperation this morning in allowing police to bring this incident to a close safely,” Carpinter said.

As Transport Minister, I will progress with the transport policies and projects we outlined during the campaign in order to get our country moving again.

We need to ensure that transport policy is focussed on helping people get where they need to go quickly and safely, rather than simply slowing people down.

East Auckland chartered accountant Nancy Lu has a new career, having entered Parliament as a National Party List MP. Her new role is due to National’s Andrew Bayly winning the Port Waikato by-election on November 25.

n accomplished young artist has been named the 2023 recipient of the prestigious Iris Fisher Scholarship.

The award is given out annually by the Te Tuhi art gallery in Pakuranga and this year it’s gone to Wellington-based artist Bena Jackson, who creates sculptures and installations.

She’s completing a Master of Fine Arts at Massey University Wellington Whiti o Rehua School of Art. Jackson’s artistic practice considers community actions in public space and urban environments where agency, ingenuity, potential, and tension intersect.

“I’m thrilled to be awarded this year’s scholarship,” she says.

“It really is a special and exciting way to end my year at Massey.

Her original bequest has fostered contemporary visual arts practice and art education.

It’s envisaged the funds will be put toward fees, materials, travel or a purpose which will enable the recipient to successfully complete their final year of postgraduate study.

Two women have been arrested and charged over a string of incidents that began when the driver of a stolen vehicle allegedly drove off from an east Auckland petrol station without paying for fuel.

The alleged theft happened in East Tamaki on September 25.

Counties Manukau South Police area commander, Inspector Joe Hunter, says police next saw the vehicle in Pukekohe on November 17.

“One of our police units stopped the same stolen vehicle in a car park and found the two alleged offenders inside.

“The vehicle had an illegal, manufactured registration plate, and the plate of another vehicle attached.

“Our staff invoked a search of the vehicle and its occupants and found various items of drug paraphernalia and a small quantity of methamphetamine.

“We also found 41 counterfeit $50 banknotes, and five $5 counterfeit notes in the handbag of one of the offenders, as well as three counterfeit $50 banknotes in the glove box.”

The two women, aged 39 and 35, were scheduled to appear in the Pukekohe District Court on November 22 facing theft, bail breach and possesses forged banknote charges.

Police encourage anyone who’s been given counterfeit banknotes to report it as soon as possible.

“If you believe someone is trying to pass you a counterfeit note, do not accept it.

“If you find you’ve already received a counterfeit note, put it in an envelope to avoid handling it further and get in touch with police.

“You can phone police on 105 or you can also give information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

SFO defends its prosecution after convictions overturned “

T

he law enforcement agency that laid charges against seven people over political donations is defending its decision to prosecute after the Court of Appeal overturned all but one of their convictions.

Yikun Zhang, Shijia (Colin) Zheng and his twin brother Hengjia (Joe) Zheng went on trial alongside former Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and three defendants whose names are suppressed in front of Justice Ian Gault in the Auckland High Court last year.

The Zheng brothers are understood to live in east Auckland and according to the NZ Companies Office they’re connected to properties in Flat Bush and Pakuranga.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) accused Zhang, the Zhengs and Ross of allegedly taking part in a fraudulent scheme to split two large donations made to the National Party in 2017 and 2018 into smaller amounts so the identity of the true donor or donors was not disclosed as legally

Zhang and the Zheng brothers also faced charges, along with two men and a woman whose names are suppressed, over a 2017 donation to the Labour Party.

At the trial’s conclusion, Gault acquitted the three defendants who have name suppression of all charges.

He also acquitted Zhang and the Zhengs of the charges relat-

ing to the donation to Labour.

Zhang was found not guilty over the donation to National in 2017, but guilty over the one in 2018.

Colin Zheng was found guilty in relation to the donations made to National in 2017 and 2018.

Joe Zheng was found guilty over the donation to National in 2018 and of lying to the SFO. Ross, who was reported in March to be running an escort

agency in Auckland CBD, was acquitted of all charges.

Following the trial, the Zhang and the Zheng brothers appealed their convictions with the Court of Appeal releasing its decision on November 9.

All of their convictions were quashed except of that of Joe Zheng for lying to the SFO. No retrials have been ordered, leaving the SFO with just a single conviction relating to one of seven initial defendants.

A summary of the Court of Appeal decision states as there’s insufficient evidence to demonstrate the appellants themselves obtained any benefit, the convic-

tions must be quashed.

A spokesperson for the SFO says it was an important case to take as it had implications for the integrity of New Zealand’s electoral system and reputation for transparency.

“New Zealand’s response to any behaviour that may undermine our electoral systems is essential to preserving our reputation as one of the least corrupt countries in the world.

“The SFO is tasked with safeguarding that reputation and it is a role we take very seriously.”

The spokesperson says the Court of Appeal found there was “no doubt the National Party secretary and/or Electoral Commission were deceived by the appellants”.

“With no applicable offence under the Electoral Act, the charge of obtaining by deception most appropriately captured the seriousness of the alleged offending.

“However, the Court of Appeal considered the charge of obtaining by deception could not apply as the appellants had not personally obtained a benefit.”

This has included refreshed branding, a revamped e-commerce website, an expanded workspace and an improved

delivery service. They’ve also added an alcohol licence to send curated wine and champagne as well as partnering with aligned local suppliers and luxury brands from Colestown Chocolates, ARC candles, Noughts and Crosses Bakery as well as Triumph and Disaster to offer its customers a range of luxury add-ons to their flower purchases.

Karen says they have developed a customer base of more than 30,000 customers and are now sending more than 2000 bouquets per month.

s we head into the festive season, many people may be tempted to take up a payment holiday on loans to help ease financial pressure.

However, Financial Ombudsman Susan Taylor is reminding consumers they might just end up paying more in the long run.

“While payment holidays may offer short-term relief, the interest added to the loan during the holiday period and the longer time it will take to pay it off might mean it’s just not worth reducing or deferring payments, in the longer term, explains Taylor.

In a recent case investigated

by Financial Services Complaints Limited (FSCL), a free Ombudsman and dispute resolution service, Leo* had taken out a loan to buy a car. A few months later, he received a text message from his lender saying that, because he was a loyal client and had no arrears on his account, he was eligible for a payment holiday period over the festive season.

FSCL found that while Leo did not realise the interest kept accumulating, the lender was entitled to charge interest over the four-week holiday period.

FSCL suggested that Leo discontinue his complaint.

“Interest will continue to accrue while a repayment holiday is in place, so the borrower will wind up paying more money back to the lender in total,” Taylor says.

“Typically, the loan term will be extended because of the loan repayment holiday, meaning the borrower will be paying the loan back for longer than they had originally planned.

“Although tempting, consumers might want to weigh up the disadvantages, as while the term ‘payment holiday’ is often used, it is not really a holiday - rather it is a loan deferral that you’ll end up paying for. It is also important for consumers to speak to their lender early if they are experiencing hardship.”

Foundation raising funds for children’s Christmas C

hristmas will be hard for many families in South Auckland but even more so for families with disabled or sick children.

So, community champion Dave Letele is teaming up with Middlemore Foundation to give children looked after by Kidz First a magical Christmas party, gifts, a fresh BBM Food Share Pack, and a little extra support for the holiday season.

BBM and the Middlemore Foundation hope to raise $80,000 and invite those who can support them, to do so.

“Families in South Auckland have been doing it tough, and this Christmas will be hard, and even more so for the 600 families looking after disabled or sick children at home as well the kids stuck in hospital wards,” Letele says.

“Christmas, for children, is the biggest event on their calendar. We need to make sure that no one misses out, so if you can help, let’s make it a good one for

these kids.”

The children and the whānau being supported are inpatients and outpatients of South Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital’s Kidz First.

Margi Mellsop, CEO Middlemore Foundation, shares how much Kidz First is appreciated by parents.

“They tell us how much they love the team at Kidz First, who always go the extra mile for them and their children.”

STEADY POPULATION MODEL FOR NZ

Auckland is so spread out that the cost of getting a useful public transport system will be prohibitive.

To get out of Auckland to most places in New Zealand on public transport will be difficult if not impossible especially over holidays. Cars are useful for carrying stuff, holidaying, recreation, emergencies and staying sheltered. Why should city dwellers forgo their cars and town and rural dwellers have all the fun.

New Zealand’s population is low, let’s keep it that way and keep our relatively high standard of living and keep our EVs [electric vehicles].

Why pander to the politicians and wealthy who want to “grow the economy” by importing immigrants and artificially raising GDP as the Key government did. By keeping our population steady, healthy and stable, we will advertise to the rest of the world what can be done. We are lucky to have this opportunity, let’s not throw it away.

The pandemic has shown we can do this as our population growth in Auckland has almost levelled off despite Kiwis coming home. Possible future viral and bacterial pandemics due to

resistance to anti-bacterial drugs along with hot climate deaths may, sadly, help reduce our population. Once we overcome the immigrant-induced housing shortage and convert to EVs, there will be no need for denser housing along with its considerable GHG emissions.

The building industry is responsible for 20 per cent of our GHG emissions. Why introduce more?

Sure, there will be measures to discourage the overuse of petrol cars but all that stuff will only be a temporary measure once we have converted to EVs and everyone understands a model that people will want.

OPEN LETTER TO THE PM Dear Mr Luxon, Congratulations on your success at the election. As a proponent and personal user of EVs [electric vehicles], we hope you will implement policies that accelerate New Zealand’s transition to clean transport.

An important first step you can make is to delay any changes to the Clean Car Discount until July 1, 2024.

It is weeks until the deadline for National’s policy to end the Clean Car Discount by December 31, 2023, yet there is still no clarity for Kiwis looking to buy cars as to what that means. If, for example, a person orders a car now but it is not delivered until January, will that vehicle be subject to any fee or rebate?

No one, including the Ministry of Transport, knows.

This is creating uncertainty in the vehicle market, affecting both dealers and buyers.

What is clear is that any changes the Government makes would need to be rushed through Cabinet and Parliament in the next few weeks without proper consultation or select committee hearings. That is bound to lead to unfair outcomes.

We do not agree with National’s policy to scrap the Clean Car Discount. It has been a tremendously successful policy that has caused a step change in EV uptake and is cutting New Zealand’s emissions. If any changes are to be made to the programme, we would recommend a public consultation period to enable the wider public that the

lthough the Rugby 15s season has come to an end, there is no shortage of union going on this summer.

Howick College is gearing up to compete in the Girls Premiership at the prestigious Condor Sevens, held in Mount Maunganui this year from December 2 to December 5.

The school’s senior girls side recently came second at the Auckland

Rugby 7s tournament, losing to Mount Albert Grammar School 14-7 in the final.

Meanwhile the junior girls won the Blues Region Year 9 and 10 tournament, beating MAGS in the final 31-12.

“The senior team are training hard and are a little bit more experienced this year with our young girls a year older,” says director of sport Adelita Sotutu.

She thanked Accurate Waterproofing and Lucca Trailers for their contin-

Meanwhile, PURC had some success recently, being crowned bowl champions at the Cobra 10s, held in Malaysia, in its 50th edition.

The squad of 18 was made up of players from the club’s premiers, premier development, under 85kg Panthers and Under 21s sides, as well as school leavers.

A PURC side will also be competing at the Global Youth Sevens tournament in Auckland from December 15 to December 17.

With the holiday season almost here, it’s all about summer indulgence….travel, gift ideas, theatre, and wine!

Among her favourite Aussie destinations, HELEN PERRY recently returned on holiday to Noosaville.

However, this time she added another Queensland gem, Hervey Bay, to her itinerary and gave it the thumbs up!

nce again, the Sunshine Coast lived up to its name greeting us with warm sunshine and not a shower in sight.

Flying into the airport, at Maroochydore, proved a blessing. Husband and I were through customs in about 30 minutes although, on our return, it took a little longer to pass through security as there were numerous flights departing. Nevertheless, an easy airport experience.

After a night in Maroochydore, we headed north in our hire car (about an hour’s drive) via the coastal David Low Highway.

Unable to secure a unit in the heart of the Gympie Terrace action, we booked 11 days at Ivory Palms, a large resort close to Noosa Marina and Tewantin, which required a little extra driving.

With three swimming pools – one heated – plus a games room and outdoor fun facilities, it was an ideal family resort. An

Our two-bedroom, two level apartment had good parking. It was modern and

A small outdoor area on the south side, with an uninviting outlook, meant this was a unit I wouldn’t opt for again. Others were better situated.

meals were generous and drinks cheap, but my favourite meals (lunches) were served at Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort. The service, environment and food were exceptional, including my Mooloolaba prawn sandwich with lemon mayo, tomato salsa, crispy lettuce, rye bread and sweet potato fries.

Tony Dickason, project manager Cross Country Rentals Auckland, says that the company currently transports over 2500 students each day nationally, and has recently been awarded the contract for East Auckland.

“We are looking for up to 70 drivers for this new cluster. The role involves part time work three to four hours per day Monday to Friday during the school term.”

Cross Country Rentals operate three

types of light vehicles for SESTA, including cars, 10-seater vans, and specially equipped mobility vehicles.

“We are looking for good drivers who live in the Eastern suburbs and thrive on providing great customer service.

Applicants need to have a clean driving record and held a full class one Drivers Licence for at least two years.

“Students with special needs are appreciative of routine and consistency, requiring dedicated drivers but we also offer casual roles,” he explains.

The drivers get to park the allocated modern vehicle at their homes which makes the commute easier.

“Many of our drivers are retired looking for something to fill in part of their day and to top up their pension. Some of them live in retirement villages and have built a great rapport with the families.”

The job is very rewarding, in more ways than one!

Second time around, we opted for the $45 two-course lunch which included a glass of wine.

I also gave top marks to Seasons in Hastings St, Noosa Heads. It was expensive but my light lunch (three large prawn and scallop ravioli with citrus beurre blanc and roe) was just the best.

Flame Hill Winery, near Montville, was another hit. My husband and I shared a ‘solo’ ploughman’s platter – refreshing, varied and ample for two. Initially sceptical about wine from Queensland, I was pleasantly surprised so invested in a $45 bottle of very smooth shiraz. I Intended bringing home until my son accidentally opened it and we were ‘forced’ to imbibe – superb!

Despite some delicious meals, we were generally disappointed in the overall lack of innovative seafood we had encountered in past years. While prices were similar to New Zealand, Noosa’s Sunday Farmers’ Market offered inexpensive breakfast options galore and I also scored a huge bag of passionfruit, a large punnet of luscious strawberries, a bag of oranges and raspberries all for just $4 each.

My son and his partner arrived later than us so, we stayed longer than usual in Noosaville, treating ‘the kids’ to an Everglades Serenity cruise passing along the sheltered waters of the upper Noosa River. These everglades are only one of two such ecosystems in the world, the other located in Florida. Apparently, 44 per cent of Australian bird species reside in the reserve and we saw a wide variety while marvelling at reflections and colours in the still waters.

About 20 minutes driving from Tewantin, the Habitat Everglades EcoCamp, from where the cruise departed, was impressive. The pristine grounds offered eco-campers, powered and unpowered sites, wilderness safari tents and paperbark glamping tents for hire. It was located along the water’s edge – with paddleboards, kayaks and wave skis plus walking trails and boat hire to keep visitors busy, as well as plenty of kangaroos hopping around too.

I recommend heading there for lunch at the contemporary, on-site Coothara Bar & Bistro and do try some of the eight artesian beers on tap from Habitat’s Micro Eco brewery.

Despite having visited the Eumundi Markets and Montville many times, we returned to both relishing refreshments at the Montville Inn where a talented singer/ guitarist kept us entertained. I could have stayed all day, but time was short so it was off to pack our bags again and head for a new favourite destination, Hervey Bay.

Everglades

HERVEY BAY: BREATHTAKING! We had just three days in the beautiful coastal town of Hervey Bay, but we were impressed.

Our visit included a drive north to visit the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and also the Bundaberg Barrel, home to Bundaberg Ginger Beer and its spin-offs. At the latter family-owned company, the visual timeline was fascinating, but we opted out of a formal tasting session and instead made our way to the nearby rum distillery for a guided tour. It was a real treat! I didn’t realise just how many different rums Bundaberg produced as well as their flavoured rum liqueurs.

Our tour price ($25 for seniors) included two free drinks each (choosing was hard!) and although I’ve never been partial to rum, I learnt a lot from this tour and regretted not buying from the premium range.

We spent the following two days relaxing at Hervey Bay, walking the length of the 880-metre pier and checking out shopping and dining along The Esplanade where there was plenty of beachfront accommodation on offer too – all very appealing.

We stayed at The Mantra at nearby Urangan, where our apartment overlooked the sea and marina. With four waterfront restaurants just beyond the hotel door and The Hervey Bay Boat Club about 350 metres away, dining was easy, especially at The Dock just across the bridge spanning the hotel’s heated pool. A tapas restaurant, its service, prices and food were excellent.

Because our Hervey Bay visit was short, we will return and include a trip to Fraser Island. As it was, we drove to Maroochydore for one last night, dining at rustic and cosy Flume – simple Italian fare and great live music just next door to our unit. The next morning, the road outside was closed for the Sunshine Coast Marathon but, luckily, it opened just in time to return our car and make for the airport.

Yet again, the Sunshine Coast delivered as it does regardless of the season.

RISING STARS TAKE STAGE It’s their happy place. For 14-year-old Violet Taylor being on stage is pure magic.

The St Kentigern College student was thrilled when she heard that she was to play the lead role of Gabriella Montez in National Youth Theatre’s Disney’s High School Musical On Stage. Also from St Kent’s College, 15-year-old Adam Lucas who plays Coach Bolton, enjoys the complexity of the role as it gives him an insight into the human mind and helps understand people better. EastLife talks to both Violet and Adam on the roles they play in the entertaining musical.

WERE YOU BORN TO BE ON STAGE? Violet: Yes! I have always been a loud person, I got my first taste of performing arts when I was seven-years-old in a choir solo, and haven’t looked back since.

I’ve been involved in countless musicals, plays and music groups, both in and out of school.

Adam: My first ever chance to act on stage was when I was 10, featuring as Magpie Mac, in my primary school end-of-year production Mystery at Magpie Manor. This gave me a love for performing which I have maintained to this day.

HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE CHARACTER YOU PLAY IN DISNEY’S HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL? Violet: I grew up watching the High School Musical movies and I always gravitated towards my character Gabriella as she had quite similar qualities to me. For instance, Gabriella is a ‘brainiac’ but she wants to break free from the box, society puts you in and become more than just that. I relate to this a lot as I do many different activities at school, and love to show that you cannot be tied down to just one thing.

Adam: I understand Coach Bolton to be very rough around the edges, I find him brash and overbearing at times. But I find he truly loves his son, and he wants what is best for him, but he gets caught up in what he wants for his son, that he ignores what his son wants for himself. I can identify with his passion, as he is a very passionate person, something I can relate to.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE? Violet: My favourite thing is the people and the environment it

creates. This was my first show back after a few years and I just felt so welcomed and accepted.

You meet such incredible people and make amazing friendships.

Adam: I love the community of NYT; everyone is very nice and welcoming. This is my first time working with NYT, and I have already made lots of friends with some amazing people. The directors, choreographers, and all the other staff are all amazing and very professional, they really help with creating a character, and they make rehearsals fun.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE ON STAGE? Violet: For me my biggest challenge on stage is just being confident and sure in myself, so I perform the very best I can.

Adam: Stage fright is probably my biggest challenge. I have, on occasion, messed up my lines in a performance simply due to stage fright. I find that I get so focussed on not making a mistake, and not making a fool of myself, I end up making a mistake, and a fool of myself!

BEST PART ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION? Violet: It’s the escape it creates for me. Every week I get to see these people and do something I love, and it doesn’t really get any better than that.

Adam: The best part has probably been getting introduced to NYT and the community. Signing up was a brilliant decision, and it has been so incredibly fun to be a part of this production and meeting my fellow cast members. I won’t lie, going on camp was very fun, and that was a highlight, but meeting such amazing and kind people has made this production great.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE ROLE? Violet: I prepared for this role by watching a lot of videos of other people playing Gabriella and deciding what I liked and didn’t like of their adaptations of the character. I then took what I liked and made my own version of the character I play.

Adam: I begin by learning my lines, via repetition, until I have achieved memorisation. While doing this, I play around with the tone and volume until I find something that works. I also speak with the directors and other actors to get their opinion on how I should act, and what tone, volume, accent, physicality, I should use, and incorporate these ideas into my performance.

As two of the best tastemakers collaborated, to create an experience like none other, the guests were first invited to try their hand at making a Strawberry & Cream Tiramisu. A welcome treat, adding to the fun factor of the product launch.

Led by Malisa Nauyen, founder Luna Bakehouse, the invitees were presented with the ingredients—measured containers of cream, mascarpone, strawberries, jam, ladyfingers, and sprinkles.

Once the culinary wannabees tried their hand at whipping up a sinful and Insta-worthy Strawberry Tiramisu it was time for a chilled glass of a blushing hued Moscato Strawberry & Cream.

The light, vibrant and lower in alcohol (8 per cent) is ideal for summer. It evokes a sense of celebration, making it a fitting choice for the holiday season.

The National Youth Theatre is New Zealand's premier musical theatre training programme for young people aged 7-21.

About our OutReach programme We not only provide full scholarships for a large number of deserving students to join the cast, but we also reach new audiences by presenting four schools’ performances and partnering with deserving schools to fully fund their attendance at those shows.

Our programmes change lives. Whilst some will be inspired to pursue a career in the theatre, every child will benefit from an experience which enables them to confidently take the stage and happily interact with their peers whilst developing the skills for well-rounded lives.

The workshop process is designed to extend the cast at every opportunity– this can be as simple having each student stand up and say something about themselves while answering the roll – a real achievement for a shy 7 year old. For our more experienced cast, there is the possibility of becoming part of our extension dance programme or taking on the challenge a lead role.

Our programmes can take a child from shyly hiding at the back of the room to confidently standing center stage, and these changes impact their whole lives. Our students go on to deliver speeches in their classes, to confidently interact with their peers, to more well-rounded lives. Some are inspired to a career in the theatre, all benefit from the unique experience.
