Part of Botany Road in Golflands would fall from 60km/h to 50km/h, as would part of Cascades Road in Highland Park. Edgewater Drive in Pakuranga would go from 50km/h to 30km/h, while parts of Pakuranga Road would drop from 60km/h to 50km/h. That specific proposed change isn’t supported by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. “Pakuranga Road is one of the busiest roads in New Zealand and is critical for people in east Auckland who commute to and from work each day,” he says.

eople who want to see speed limits on numerous east Auckland roads lowered in an effort to increase safety have until April 3 to share their views. Auckland Transport has released a list of more than 1500 roads across the city that it’s eyeing for proposed speed reductions. It’s part of an initiative designed to reduce deaths and injuries on the road network. AT says if approved, the changes will come into force at the end of this year, dependent on public feedback, board approval and implementation considerations. Among the 1646 roads on the ‘phase three’ list

“Slowing the road down will only mean people spend more time getting around and less time with their family at the end of the day. I encourage everyone in Pakuranga to submit in opposition to this proposal and will be doing the same myself.” The lengths of Cockle Bay’s Advene Road, Alexander Street and Avoca Road would fall from 50km/h to 30km/h. Part of Shelly Beach Parade would be reduced from 50km/h to 20km/h. Among the people pleased by that is Cockle Bay resident Danny Wright, who’s involved in a community campaign to slow down speeding drivers who are plaguing the suburb. ➤ Turn to page 3

But they urgently need the public’s help to secure the remaining supplies. At www.flagsforukraine.com people can show your support by sharing the flag of their country rendered in the iconic blue and yellow of Ukraine, and in exchange make a vitally-needed donation. Malcomson said, “Crown Agents is the not-for-profit international development organisation that has been supplying medicines and medical equipment to Ukraine for 25 years, directly embedded in the Ministry of Health for five years.

John Sato ‘an inspiration’ W

WII veteran John Sato has died aged 98. Sato, from Howick, received global recognition for his efforts to attend an anti-racism rally in Auckland held at Aotea Square on March 24, 2019, in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks. One of only two Japanese servicemen in the New Zealand army in World War II, he felt compelled to show his support for the Muslim community following the Christchurch terror attacks. He took several buses to get into the city. Sato left his house on Sunday morning, March 24, to visit a mosque in Pakuranga before deciding to go into Auckland City centre for an antiracism march. In a photo that caught the attention of people across the world, Sato is seen flanked by a police officer and a member of the public as they fall behind the March. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said during her visit to Howick the photo was so powerful, she found herself coming back to it over and over again. She said at the time meeting Sato was a privilege and that “he is an inspiring reminder of kindness, love and courage”. Sato briefly addressed the crowd and said, “What I’ve seen since that terrible occasion in Christchurch, is the way people have brought out what’s within them and that is genuine

followers. “Thank you John,” she wrote. “Your actions warmed the hearts of so many during a time of such sadness.” Howick businesswoman and Howick Local Board member Bo Burns has been friends with Sato for six years. “We met as I stopped to help him cross the road as a car nearly hit him and then spent the day with him at the doctors and hospital as he was unwell and going to catch…public transport for an emergency procedure,” Burns said. “In those six years, I enjoyed a special bond where I learned about his incredible life story, his love of many cultures – including his Scottish and Japanese heritage – and love for humanity and peace. “His grace and outlook on life is something I will treasure forever and inspire to be more like. He is now at peace and reunited with his much-loved wife Margaret, and adored daughter Anne. I will cherish his wise guidance and fabulous sense of humour. “One of his favourite sayings was ‘Bear the unbearable with patience and dignity’. This is a Japanese motto that he lived by. I will continue to share this in honour of John. “Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed around east Auckland by many people you became friends with.”

care and love… “We are all part of one family – the human family. Let’s not forget that we do care for each other.” Times reporter Therese Milne (then Henkin) wrote at the time: “The pair sat down, along with around 70 other invited guests at the Howick Bowling Club, to

Share your view on road safety ➤ From page 1 Wright says it’s “totally understandable” Shelly Beach Parade’s speed limit may drop to 20km/h and he’s hopeful AT may consider lowering the speed limit on Cockle Bay Road and Pah Road as well. “A 30km/h down that hill and back up to the top would be ideal.” Wright says there’s been several “close calls” relating to speed on Cockle Bay roads this year. “One [vehicle] went through a lamppost and one went through a fence. “I didn’t see the one that went through the lamppost but I came out in the morning and drove up the road and there were skid marks and a lamppost lying down.” He urges people to submit feedback to AT in support of lowered speed limits in Cockle Bay. “I would encourage them to do so to keep our families and our kids in the area safe. “I think if we can put some responsibility onto AT to keep people safe, with the speeds through there, because they certainly don’t want the worst thing to happen and that’s someone getting injured or killed. “We need to do it for ourselves as a community.” People can see the full list of roads and provide feedback online before April 3 at www.at.govt.nz.

WELL DONE THE TIMES!

Congratulations to you on 50 years of Howick and Pakuranga Times. What a wonderful celebration for you. You deserve all the accolades for such a wonderful contribution to the life of Howick and Pakuranga. May this good work continue for years to come.

YES, WE CAN STOP PUTIN NOW

Remember Georgia, Chechnya, Syria, Crimea, eastern Ukraine (14,000 lost lives), the (Russianbacked) torture meted out to Belarusians in their quest for democracy last year, and the poisoning and jailing of [Russian opposition leader, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist] Alexei Navalny. Ukraine surrendered its nuclear arsenal to Russia in a treaty (signed by Russia, UK and US) in 1994 with the assurance that it would be safe from attack. Despite not joining NATO, Ukraine is attacked anyway. Where is the UN 2005 responsibility to protect and take collective action should peaceful means be inadequate? The West has failed Ukraine. Well-intended sanctions are inadequate to stop Putin and one cannot negotiate with him. Putin must be given an ultimatum now to stop his genocide in Ukraine and NATO must intervene slowly, strategically, but significantly, by firstly ensuring a no-fly zone. We cannot stand idle. Where is our humanity? Tomorrow it could be us.

Steve Lincoln Botany Downs

www.times.co.nz

I am following the war in Ukraine on Al Jazeera [TV]. I have the greatest admiration and respect for the Ukrainians – fighting for their freedom. The president rallies his people, soldiers fighting with limited military material and the population ready to die for their country. Ukraine is united to survive. And here, we have two selfabsorbed MPs, Simeon Brown and Christopher Luxon, who constantly feed us with negativity, demoralise us instead of giving us hope, undermining the government at every opportunity. Instead of them fighting the virus with us, they are continually campaigning for the next election. Some people are born leaders and some aren’t.

MORE BROKEN PROMISES FROM AUCKLAND TRANSPORT

Auckland Transport has broken so many promises it’s hard to keep track. Late last year, Burswood residents were shocked to discover a new proposal to divert the Eastern Busway from the long-planned Ti Rakau Dr route through Burswood, demolishing homes and devastating the local community. Since then, Auckland Transport has promised to hold face-to-face meetings with the community. However, instead, all we got was three 1-hour online sessions with half that time for the project team to talk, leaving countless questions unanswered. I support the Eastern Busway – it’s a critical piece of transport infrastructure we need to make public transport more reliable – but east Auckland needs the busway we were promised and locals deserve to be heard and respected. Auckland Transport has proven unable or unwilling to do either, despite the valiant efforts of locals. Why is Auckland Council letting them get away with this appalling behaviour?

Damian Light Northpark

TOOTHLESS TIGERS

I’m referring, of course, to the United Nations peace keeping

force and NATO. NATO and the Americans, by providing the Ukranians with weaponry, are only prolonging their misery and how pathetic is that? The Americans whom we could always count on for policing the world’s trouble spots are only noticeable by their absence allowing the rows and rows of convoys of tanks, described as sitting ducks by a military strategist, allowed to inflict their misery and destruction on Ukranian citizens virtually at will. The Americans and NATO should be ashamed. America trumpets black lives matter, how about millions of Ukranians including women and children. They don’t. The West’s response, including sanctions, are truly pathetic, even more so when the Russians own the Ukraine and all the wealth that goes with that. Roll on communism which is now bound to dominate the world scene for the rest of the century. Western nations will have only themselves to blame.

A BEAUTIFULLY SIMPLE GESTURE Thank you to the person who carved a love heart into the sand at Mellons Bay Beach last Saturday, March 19. That morning, I had been invited out for a drive and to brunch. I set out to the marina, looking forward to the idea of a new friend, as I am new to the area. But he was a no show! Not feeling sorry for myself, just being aware of the emotions that were flooding in. I thought I had better aim for a beach – any beach will do in a storm – with my ever faithful dog. There, I came across a beautifully simple gesture someone else had left in the sand. To my complete joy, the words

SOLUTION FOR RAIL TO AIRPORT

The debate about light rail for Auckland goes on and on. In the meanwhile, there is a simple solution for rail to the airport, which is a short, heavy rail link from Puhinui to the airport. This will give a direct rail link to the entire suburban rail network. If a light rail system is eventually built from downtown to the airport, this will give us a second rail link, serving those suburbs along its route.

Dave Ronson Pakuranga Heights,

THE RUBBISHING OF THE INORGANIC PICK-UP

I am writing with consternation on behalf of a very large group of upset people regarding Auckland Council’s rubbishing of the inorganic pick-up. As soon it was announced, tidy kiwis diligently booked in and saved their reference numbers on their calendars. Then later we hear that the collections are “on hold.” As I am selling my home and moving, I decided to hire a flexibin. They aren’t horribly expensive but it became awkward when the pick-up was delayed and my realtor had already organised an open home. I considered the flexi-bin perched taking up so much space by my front garden was not a very good feature. Now my neighbour, who is also selling, has had an even larger flexi-bin pick-up already but now he says he has more stuff that he thought was for the inorganic pick-up. It’s causing quite an expense getting these private bin pick-ups and the inorganics is a portion of the cost of our rates. Another neighbour is so angry that he said he’s just leaving his stuff out on the verge as a protest and suggested that I start a protest petition on the issue. I see several more piles left out further along the street. The excuse council offers is that

it is “on hold due to staff restraints”. Really? Is it actually all that different to the normal weekly collection for rubbish and recycling? I think we really deserve a better excuse than that from council.

HERITAGE LOST

Slowly but surely we are having our heritage eroded away from under our feet. I am stumped as to why large mature pohutakawa are being chopped down. These trees are not only beautiful but are environmentally valuable, particularly on our coastal cliffs and reserves. I was horrified and saddened to see this mature pohutakawa had been chopped on Compass Point recently. Interesting to note that the stump had ‘disappeared’ later the same day. Why are we allowing people to fell mature natives? Anything goes under Auckland’s Unitary Plan it seems.

Howick & Pakuranga Times Welcome to the second weekly column looking back at the Times’ first publication year 50 years ago. Here are the top stories of April 12, 1972: LABOUR NOMINATES ITS CANDIDATE

Release of the new electoral boundaries which makes Pakuranga/Howick and the district one national seat is seen by the National Party as being a safe one. But Labour, which has just appointed its representative for the seat, John Irwin, a Coca-Cola company accountant, believes that it is somewhere in the marginal area. CRIME

Can anyone help solve these crimes? By CHRIS HARROWELL

T

he victims of two recent violent incidents in east Auckland have received no resolution as police are yet to identify the offender in each case. In the first incident, police investigated after a teenager reported his vehicle was damaged by two men in an unprovoked attack. The 18-year-old was leaving Pak’nSave Ormiston at about 8.40pm on January 21 when he heard people yelling. According to the teen’s mother, who wants to remain anonymous, two men and one woman then began following her son. The trio were “yelling and screaming” at him and driving erratically, she said. Her son drove along Stancombe Road, heading toward Counties Manukau East Police headquarters in Ormiston Road. When he stopped for a red light at the intersection of Ormiston Road and Chapel Road, the two men following him got out of their vehicle and approached his car and tried to pull him out of it, but were unable to as he’d locked his doors. They then “smashed” his car and tried to break its windows, his mother said.

She said her son was alone at the time and did nothing to provoke the men, who with the woman were in a gold-coloured hatchback vehicle. “My son, who’s only had his restricted [driver’s] licence for a month, called the first phone number in his phone and it was my husband. He was so scared he wasn’t making much sense.” She said her son was crying and shaking following the incident, was unable to sleep, and missed work. A police spokesperson previously said an investigation was under way into the incident, which was categorised as wilful damage. Anyone who saw what happened at the intersection of Ormiston Road and Chapel Road was asked to contact police and quote file number 220122/0668. Despite this, a police spokesperson now says: “A detailed report was taken at the time and police reviewed all available CCTV footage. “However, at this stage police have no further lines of enquiries and the matter has been filed. “If anyone has information relating to the matter, police will investigate.” The second recent incident

involving violence in east Auckland saw a man left with numerous injuries after he was subjected to a violent “ambush” attack at Maraetai Beach on January 19. A police spokesperson previously said the victim had been in the water at the beach and was assaulted by two unknown men when he returned to shore just before 9.30pm. A relative of the victim posted on social media that he suffered a broken and split nose, swollen cheeks, a split lip, damage to his knees and wrist and broken ribs in the “ambush” attack. People who witnessed the incident or who had information on it were asked to contact police and quote file number 220120/5300. Two months later, a police spokesperson says: “Despite extensive efforts to identify the alleged offenders, police have exhausted all lines of enquiry and the matter has been filed. “Should new information come to light, police are open to reassessing the matter.” ➤ People with information on the two violent incidents can phone police on 105 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.

COUNCIL HITS OUT AT BUILDING COST LEVELS

The article on building costs in last Wednesday’s edition was considered the same day by the Health and Bylaws Committee who disagree with what it believes is unjust criticism of Council staff and administration of building bylaws by anonymous contractors, and deplores the publishing of veiled allegations without facts, and which are incapable of investigation.

This year’s cup day for the Howick Sailing Club did not see the usual big fleets eventuate, but the weather was near-perfect.

24 HOUR GAME TO RAISE SOME MONEY NEEDED

There have been far too many walk-athons or call them what you like...but when 24 six-form pupils at Pakuranga College decided to go for a fund-raising project for the new gymnasium they may have learnt a lesson that will last through the rest of their lives – go ahead and do it and place all the reliance on yourself.

Clarification The Times wishes to clarify that in the March 23 edition, a quote from Dr Anil Channa stated about 140 doctors who had passed their exams had not got their PGY1s in the last four years. The Medical Council said that is incorrect, stating “85 doctors who have passed the exam over the past 5 years have not gained employment”.

Rotarian honoured for service

NZ must pull out the stops to fix labour shortage Last week I met with local business leaders at a brilliant morning tea event organised by the Greater East Tamaki Business Association. We talked about issues that businesses are facing, such as the cost of living crisis and surging inflation – but it quickly become apparent there are even more challenges that are keeping everyday businesses from getting ahead. New Zealand is experiencing massive labour shortages – the worst in 40 years. Our local businesses are feeling it but it’s happening all across the country. You can’t go into a café or supermarket without seeing a ‘Help Wanted’ sign displayed. But it doesn’t matter which sector of the economy you go to today, they are all short of workers, be they healthcare, welders, seasonal farm workers, factory workers or retail staff. One of the main causes is that the Government has not prepared Immigration New Zealand to process visas for the border reopening. Immigration New Zealand’s website states that seven months is the current processing time for an onshore visitor visa, five months for a work visa and three months for a student visa. The Immigration Minister’s lack of action has directly affected our struggling businesses being able to attract skilled workers and is pro-

Dr Philly Karani, a senior member of Rotary Club of Somerville and a former District Governor in India, was selected by the Rotary International Board of Directors to receive the ‘Service Above Self Award’ for 2021-22 earlier this month. The Service Above Self Award honours Rotary members and Rotaractors who help others by volunteering their time and talents. District governors nominate candidates. Up to 150 recipients are selected each year. In January 2020, Karani was a Rotary International Representative and chair of the Rotary District 3131 Conference in Pune, India. A month later (Times, February 11), Karani coordinated an event with a committee of Rotarians, where 32 Rotarians from 12 Rotary Clubs of Rotary International District 3131, India, ventured out on a Rotary

longing the pain of families who have been separated from their loved ones for the last two years. While the country is forced to wait for immigration to catch up, a temporary solution to help the labour shortage is with working holiday makers. These are young people aged 18-30 years who travel to New Zealand to work for up to 12 or 23 months on a Working Holiday Visa – the only visa we currently have to get workers into the country. Global competition for these workers is intense. Australia, who we directly compete with for labour, is spending millions on marketing to aggressively target these workers to their shores, while also offering a raft of other incentives like a visa application fee refund, unrestricted work rights and supplementary visas. Yet our Immigration Minister is not trying to incentivise these workers at all and we risk missing out on what is already a small pool of workers to our Australian cousins. As I have said many times before, I want to lead an Opposition that not only opposes, but also proposes new ideas. The other week, National’s Immigration spokesperson Erica Stanford proposed a few changes to the visa to make New Zealand a more attractive place to these

Christopher Luxon working holiday makers. Some of the changes are no-brainers, such as raising the visa age limit to 35 years or immediately opening applications to all countries who we offer the Working Holidays Visa to, which would all help to increase the number of potential workers. Erica also proposed refunding the visa application fee for those who arrive before June 21, 2022 and to allow people who have been to New Zealand on this visa before, the ability to apply again. These incentives will attract more working holiday-makers and accelerate their arrival into New Zealand at a time when competition for these workers is intense. They will also help address the crippling labour shortages damaging many of our sectors reliant on these workers. We must do what we can to help fix the labour shortage issue that businesses around the country are facing, while we wait for a Government whose lack of action is only delaying our economic recovery. Christopher Luxon is the MP for Botany and Leader of the Opposition

IN AND AROUND HOWICK VILLAGE

Preparing for Anzac Day

I

Marking time are, from left, Tadhg Nevin, 9 and his sister Keeva, 7, and brother Oisin, 5 of Farm Cove. Times photo Wayne Martin

ANNIVERSARY

Marking our 175 years These three are getting into the spirit of the region’s 175th anniversary. The oldest boy, Tadhg Nevin, 9, became impromptu spokesperson. “Our Dad is Irish so we know about the potato famine and that is why so many people came from there 175 years ago,” said Tadhg. “It took 100 days for them to sail here. They were called the Fencibles and the Historical Village has some of their houses. “There are lots of places called Fencible in Howick to help remember them. Howick is 175 years old this year and in five years will be 180.”

t’s autumn in Auckland, almost April and with that, Anzac Day and the appropriate tributes. On April 25, all New Zealand will acknowledge the sacrifices made by our service men and women in previous conflicts. As turmoil unfolds in Eastern Europe, it brings to everyone’s attention the horrors of war and I guess makes these tributes even more poignant. Howick Village Association has commenced its contributions to remembering these sacrifices with the installation of Anzac flags this week on the street banners along Picton Street, Cook Street and Moore Street. The HVA also has planned a major commemoration in the Fencible walkway beginning on April 20, running until April 24. Weather permitting, this will be a sound and light tribute in Fencible Walk Park. Having had to postpone/ cancel so many events over the last 24 months we are hoping our plans for Anzac Day don’t get scuttled. Our community consistently demonstrates its support for this event with large annual turnouts at the

dawn service on Stockade Hill and the parade down into the Village. We anticipate that support will be seen again this year. It is this same community loyalty and support that is ensuring many retailers in the Village continue to survive what must be the most challenging 24 months they have seen. To date, we haven’t witnessed too many casualties in the way of closed businesses because of Covid-19, however I am aware of a number that are struggling. Our plea to the public of Howick is to please support your local businesses. For years we have had a vibrant little village, we do not want to see it descend into a series of vacant buildings. All businesses are reliant on your support, particularly those newer businesses that may not have established a strong regular clientele. And of course, all hospitality and cafes. One extra coffee a week from everyone could be the saviour of your favourite café. Thank you for your support. Ken Scott, Chair, HVA

COVID-19

Business donates vital Covid tests to very grateful charity By CHRIS HARROWELL

A

n east Auckland business is donating thousands of vital Covid-19 tests to an organisation dedicated to caring for people at the end of their lives. Howick-based Fundraise Factory is giving 5000 rapid antigen tests (RATs), worth about $50,000, to Totara Hospice, which cares for terminally ill patients in east and south Auckland. The business helps schools, charities, and community groups raise money by selling sustainable, branded merchandise. Sales and marketing director Bo Burns says when the last lockdown struck the company had to “pivot” to selling Covid personal protective equipment (PPE) gear to keep its staff employed. “The Fundraise Factory brand was hugely impacted because schools were shut so there were no school uniforms [being bought], sports clubs were shut, no medals, nothing.” In November last year the business gained approval to supply and sell RATs. Burns ordered 20,000 tests, not

knowing she would be able to sell all of them. The business eventually sold most of its tests to charities and she then spoke to staff at Totara Hospice, which is one of its clients. “They were telling me about issues they were having and how they were told to pre-order [the tests] online. “They were ordering 1000 RATs at a time but were receiving 50 or

80. People are in palliative care experiencing the last few days or weeks of their lives and their family can’t go in without a RATs test. “It’s been extremely painful for those families and really rough as there just wasn’t RATs around.” Burns’ family and business have strong ties to Totara Hospice. Her mother Pip Burns was heavily involved with the organisa-

tion years ago and oversaw its fundraising. That’s why Bo Burns says when she heard about the challenges Totara Hospice was having obtaining RATs she decided to donate it 100 tests from her stock. But she then received a call from one of her suppliers, Australianbased Promo Collection, which asked if there was a charity in New Zealand that needed help getting RATs. “I said absolutely, and he said they’ve got 5000 they can help us supply to a charity here. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, yes, that’s amazing’.” That’s how Fundraise Factory came to have 5000 tests which it’s now donating to Totara Hospice. “We could have split them up or done competitions or given smaller numbers away,” Burns says. “But I really think Hospice are the ones most in need right now. “Our supplier could have offered these tests to a multitude of charities in Australia and I will forever be grateful he gave one of our much-loved charities the opportunity.”

Totara Hospice medical director Dr James Jap told the Times the organisation says a big ‘thank you’ to Burns, Fundraise Factory and its supply partner Promo Collection for donating the tests. He says they’ll be used to ensure people visiting Hospice patients, as well as Hospice nurses seeing patients in the community, are negative for Covid. “Most of our work is done in the community, going to patients’ homes and seeing them and their families there. “So it will allow us to maintain safe staffing levels. “Also, if patients are being brought in and they have visitors, we can ensure our patients will stay safe in our unit because they’re some of the most vulnerable people in New Zealand. “We want to do our best to maintain their safety at all costs and RATs will make a big difference towards that. “It’s great a local member of one of the communities we serve is helping us out in this way.” Burns says the RATs were on their way to Totara Hospice on March 24.

Why this Art Course is so Successful. Art course for beginners has been a huge success in the UK.

From humble beginnings back in 2009, this step-by-step art class for beginners has become incredibly popular and has grown to over 150 branches in the UK and teaches over 6,000 new artists every week. The success is down to the professional quality of the curriculum, nothing has been left to chance and the students get real value, fantastic learning as well as a fun, sociable experience.

Especially Designed For Beginners.

Although there are many good art courses available, most are intimidating for the outright beginner. They need somewhere safe and supportive to learn and gain confidence. The Seasons method of teaching takes you from the very basics up to an intermediate level and the tutors are extremely supportive, everyone is encouraged to follow their own style of expression. The other thing we focus on is the value of time, it seems that most other classes run for 1-2 hours and for 8-10 weeks. We prefer that our students have time to settle in and so we make sure our classes are 3 hours, with refreshments, and run for 14 sessions so that students can really take time to explore their new found skills.

It’s A Great Way To Meet New People.

One of the fantastic things about the course is that you get to meet people who have the same interest as yourself. It doesn’t take long for people to bond as a group and in a short time, we have teams of new friends organising to either complete assignments together or have a social trip out to art galleries and such.

Now You Can Paint & Draw People, Pets & Places.

Over the 3 month course students explore four different media: Drawing, Painting with Watercolour, Acrylics, and Oil Pastels. Discover how to paint faces, figures, friends, family and stunning landscapes. You’ll also learn the artists’ secrets to create beautiful pieces of original art. Imagine the delight when you present your loved ones with personal portraits, or the pleasure of capturing your pet’s image on canvas. One thing is for sure, your friends and family will be absolutely amazed and delighted at what you’ve achieved.

Art Is Good For The Soul.

There is now a worldwide acknowledgement that taking time out to learn new skills, focus and contemplate while being in a supportive environment is vital for wellbeing - Art classes are recognised as ideal past-times and at the forefront of this healthier life choice. As was documented recently, it’s all to do with living a more satisfying and well balanced lifestyle that aids longevity as well as life satisfaction and stimulating mental agility.

MP calls to axe regional fuel tax P

akuranga MP Simeon Brown is criticising the Labour Government for leaving more than $300 million raised from the Auckland regional fuel tax unspent. Brown, the National Party’s Transport spokesperson, says the money is “sitting idle in the Government’s bank account” while super-city residents remain stuck in traffic.

“The Government continues to take money from Aucklanders at the petrol pump, with the unspent revenue gathered from the fuel tax now at more than $300m,” he says. “This is just another sign of Labour’s inability to deliver. “The Government and Auckland mayor Phil Goff said this money was desperately needed for Auckland to fix congestion, so why is it sitting in a bank

account gathering dust? “With $51 million wasted on a failed attempt to build an unpopular cycle bridge, four years of nondelivery on light rail and cancelled projects like Mill Road and East-West Link, Aucklanders are rightly asking why they’re still paying this tax when little is being done to improve our transport network. “If this Government isn’t going to spend this tax money on transport pro-

A owner of a real estate company says that the February property statistics are better than expected. The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ)’s Monthly Property Report for February indicates that median house prices nationally are up 13.5 per cent compared to the same time last year – from $780,000 in February 2021 to $885,000 in February 2022. Auckland’s median residential property price rose 8.2 per cent annually, from $1,100,000 in February last year to $1,189,000, down 0.8 per cent on January. The number of residential property sales fells 32.8 percent in February, from 8324 in February 2021 to 5597. The total number of properties available for sale nationally increased 47 per cent. The month’s property prices continue to climb but now at a more moderate pace, REINZ says. Sales activity remains down, demand remains and stock on the market is up. Tim Kearins, owner of Century 21 which has an office in Somerville and another in Flat Bush, says

the real estate statistics are “better than most would’ve expected”. “That can only help autumn, as will the easing of controversial lending rules which pulled the rug on so many buyers over summer,” Kearins says. He was referring to the Credit Contract & Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA). “Summer started with the CCCFA changes taking effect. It required banks to conduct ultra-conservative assessments on all new borrowers, with new mortgages all but drying up for three months. Last week’s announcement that the Government is making some significant tweaks to the CCCFA gives the coming months a timely boost,” says Kearins. Kearins says that, against the odds, February showed that overall property prices continued to climb “albeit at a more moderate pace”. “Let’s not forget that despite plenty of doom and gloom, February saw six regions and 23 territorial authorities achieve record median prices. “It is a much better end to summer than most had anticipated.”

Clinic offers free screening programme to schools By ZOE GARDEN

A

local physiotherapy clinic is offering a free sports-ready screening programme to schools. Rehab Co, with one clinic located in the Hub in Botany and another in St John’s, is committed to aiding people in strengthening people’s health and wellbeing through physiotherapy. Connor O’Driscoll and his business partner, Lauren, launched Rehab Co in April 1 2019. “We had to navigate Covid-19 and lockdowns,” O’Driscoll says. “We weren’t able to do appointments in person.” Subsequently they started New Zealand’s first mobile treatment unit: a mobile physiotherapy clinic. The vans go off-site to schools, gyms, and workplaces to screen and treat patients, which Rehab Co can use in their sports-ready screening programme. The programme helps identify if people have any faulty movement patterns, which gives them an idea of what their movement and function is like. “This can help us identify

if their prone to any injuries,” O’Driscoll says. The students, primarily sport students, go into the van and undergo a screening to see if there are any existing or past problems in their movements and health or if they’re prone to any injuries. The initial screening is free. School-aged kids can also go to their clinics in Botany and St John’s for the screenings. “We find that kids, and physio as a service, people probably don’t understand how accessible it is and how to use it. Especially younger kids where they have an injury and it lingers around. “ On top of the screenings, Rehab Co offers rehabilitation talks to schools. “We want to educate those young because then they understand rather than having to play with a sore leg. It sets them up with the right tools for looking after their bodies and playing sport in a healthy lifestyle.” Rehab Co currently has 20 physiotherapists and 5 mobile clinics. “We want to help people move better and live a pain-free life.” ➤ For more information, visit www.rehabcophysio.com

Public consultation is now open on a proposed Auckland Golf Investment Plan, which aims to ensure that all Aucklanders can benefit from publicly-owned land. Councillor Alf Filipaina, chair of the council’s Parks, Arts, Community and Events Committee, says with Auckland continuing to grow at a rapid rate, there are competing demands for land, putting pressure on the council to increase the benefits from public investment. “Public golf courses are generally large parcels of open space and there is a lot of potential to open these up for more Aucklanders to enjoy,” he said. “We could see increased benefits such as making room for new play places, walking, running and cycling paths and other sport and recreation activities. “Of course, as a plan for golf, it’s important that we continue investment into the sport. The draft plan provides for a broader range of golf experiences and pathways that attract new participants, with services targeted at low participation groups such as women and young people. “This current exclusive use of publicly-owned land for golf is not sustainable. Some Aucklanders are missing out on the benefits of golf, and as a council we are obliged to meet a wider range of community needs.” Public consultation is open until April 20. Student scores scholarship By ZOE GARDEN A former Sancta Maria College (SMC) student has received a prestigious scholarship. Sydney Causer, who graduated in 2021, was recently awarded the Te Pokai Tara Sullivan Scholarship for 2022, which is the one of the few scholarships awarded annually in NZ to students of the Roman Catholic faith who will attend medical school at either the University of Auckland (UoA) or Otago. Selection criteria was based on academic achievement, involvement in the church, activities in the community and school, leadership qualities and involvement in cultural and social activities in school and the community. Causer was the deputy head girl at SMC in 2021. “She has always been a natural leader and looked after our news centre team for several years,” assistant principal of SMC Ray Green says. After fulfilling her goal of achieving the maximum rank score in Level 3 NCEA (320 points), Causer is com-

pleting her first year in biomedical science at the UoA. She has also taken a course in drama for her general education paper due “to her love of performing arts”. “Currently, the university lectures are online but she can’t wait to go in person,” Green says. As well as being an active volunteer for her local church group at St Mark’s in Pakuranga, Causer volunteers for Logos, a Christian youth organisation that works actively with young people delivering retreats, programmes and formation. In her free time, Causer enjoys dance and cycling.
