Jet Park Auckland Hotel was the supreme winner of the 2017 South Auckland Westpac Business Awards, the supreme winner of the 2014 Hospitality Award, the 2013 Environmental Initiative Award winner, and the 2011 New Zealand Culinary Restaurant of the Year.

The Hotel was awarded a ‘four star plus’ Qualmark Enviro rating in 2019, reflecting its environmental sustainability.

CRIME

Teenagers robbed and assaulted Two Macleans College students were left shaken by an unprovoked assault and theft of one of the boy’s bikes, and another’s shoulder bag.

The incident was reported to police. “Police received a report of a robbery incident in Bucklands Beach on Saturday,” police said in a statement.

“At around 12.15 pm, two boys were approached by three men who assaulted them and stole a

bicycle and a backpack before fleeing in a vehicle.”

The boys group initially numbered six but four other boys ran off as the incident unfolded.

One of the victims Justin Weagle (15) says he was suckerpunched from behind and the offenders stole his new mongoose Legion bike, something he had only just got after saving up $450 from working all holidays. ➤➤ Turn to page 3

Some of the local churches opened their doors to devout parishioners to resume worship services at the weekend.

Now that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has eased restrictions and given a goahead for gatherings of up to 100 people, Rev Chris Barnard of St Columba Presbyterian in Botany says that the first Sunday worship after Covid-19 lockdown was held on Sunday May 31.

“We are delighted that we can gather again although restricted to 100 at a time.

We started with our 8.30am and 10.30am services on Sunday.”

And while it wasn’t the usual turn-out, the minister says he wants everyone to feel safe.

Tofilau Bernadette has volunteered for Joy International Folk Dancing and Social Services, the Auckland Catholic Diocese (Youth) and for the families and children of prisoners.

Queen’s Service Medal ➤➤Priscilla Maree Dawson,

Clevedon – For services to refugees and the Burmese community Priscilla Dawson has assisted asylum seekers from Myanmar as an interpreter for the Refugee Status Branch of Immigration New Zealand and the Refugee Status Appeals Authority since the 1980s.

Dawson began working for Refugees as Survivors New Zealand in 2000, when the government began accepting refugees from Myanmar as part of the refugee quota system.

She was initially employed as an interpreter at the Mangere Resettlement Centre but soon became a qualified and experienced crosscultural counselling and support person.

Her services to all refugees, not only those from Myanmar, extended to providing assistance

with education, housing, health, financial, employment, family and legal matters. She has helped family members in difficult domestic and relationship situations by assisting them to engage with relevant government and support agencies.

On several occasions she has housed vulnerable refugee wives and children in her own home for emergency ‘cooling down’ periods.

She has made herself available at all hours, often travelling to meet with refugee families in the evenings and on weekends to provide assistance.

Dawson is regarded as a matriarch of the Myanmar community in New Zealand and has been involved with organising language and cultural lessons for Burmese children, as well as Burmese New

Year water festival events.

Queen’s Service Medal ➤➤Neil Malcolm McCorkindale, JP, Eastern Beach – For services to hockey administration Neil McCorkindale has been a hockey volunteer in the Auckland region for more than 60 years.

McCorkindale was vice president of the Auckland Hockey Umpires Association from 1998 to 2016 and umpired high school hockey from 1977 to 2016.

He played and began umpiring junior hockey in the late 1950s and 1960s. He was a board member of the Auckland Hockey Association from 2006 to 2014 and chaired the Club Council from 2007 to 2014.

He has been vice president and Judicial Commissioner of the Auck-

land Hockey Association for the past 13 years.

He continues to umpire senior hockey grades on a weekly basis with the Association. He has been made a life member of both the Auckland Hockey Association and the Auckland Hockey Umpires Association. He has been a match director at New Zealand national hockey tournaments and was the umpire for a World Masters hockey final in Auckland. McCorkindale has received several Auckland sport awards recognising his contributions.

Boys robbed and assaulted in Bucklands Beach ➤➤ From page 1 His friend Callum McIntosh (14) had his shoulder bag ripped off his body causing extensive grazing to his neck and then was picked up from behind and thrown into the middle of Clovelly Road by one of the offenders. The bag contained an eftpos card and his student ID. Callum suffered significant cuts and bruising from the vicious

attack.

The boys hadn’t seen the offenders in the area before but were able to describe their assailants as three Pacific Island males in their early 20s, possibly being driven by females in a Black Mitsubishi Outlander with “tribal” stickers on the rear windscreen.

In a strange twist, Callum’s mother found his school ID card

while out on a walk in the vicinity of Aviemore Drive. She hopes local petrol stations or liquor stores may have caught the offenders and/or their vehicle on CCTV. Justin’s mother says the boys are now terrified by the ordeal and questions the mental health support available when her son was directed towards his own GP for assessment.

Rates freeze is needed

ery few households or businesses have managed to escape the financial impacts that we have experienced, and will continue to experience, off the back of Covid-19.

Billions of taxpayers’ money right now is being used to prop up wages and dampen the impacts. It’s not sustainable long term, but crucial right now.

The annual burden of rates levied by councils will soon also add to increased costs for everyone as councils around the country signal their continued plan to increase rates.

I recently proposed in Parliament that we should use legislation to step in to help households and businesses struggling with dayto-day costs by legislating for a rates freeze.

At no time in recent

history have ratepayers needed more relief from annual rates increases than now. Just as most other entities are going through the process of reassessing costs within their organisations, local authorities also need to review how they finance and debt-fund essential work.

Organisations like the Property Council and Taxpayers Union have made similar calls for rates freezes, backed up by a petition signed by thousands.

Local government is a creature of statute so the Parliament can lead the way on rates freezes.

Leaving it to councils to make these decisions ignores the legislative problem councils face where consultation requirements will be used as an easy excuse to box on with rates

It will be unpalatable to mayors and councillors for Parliament to require a rates freeze. But equally it’s unlikely ratepayers will get the relief they deserve if we just rely on councils to make that decision for themselves.

Unfortunately, so far, the National Party joined the Government and used their numbers in the House to block a rates freeze proposal. Only myself and ACT’s David Seymour voted in favour.

Delivering a rates freeze should not be a difficult issue for MPs from across the aisle to unite on before the Parliament dissolves for the election.

Meadowlands sold for $23m

Eyewitnesses report mysterious fireball S

everal Pakuranga residents have reported seeing a bright flash of light or a “fireball” above the Tamaki River near Waipuna Bridge. The sightings happened at around 6.47pm on Monday, May 25.

According to some eyewitnesses, the object was alleged to have then crashed into the water.

Reports of a “bright light” and “an explosion” flooded a local social media page as people recounted what they had seen. Many speculated a meteor, a rocket from nearby Rocket Lab, or even a flare was responsible.

Corinne Hill, whose property on Pakuranga Rd backs onto the river saw “a Bright orange-red (object) about the size of three full moons joined together. It (sic) was travelling at speed over the water till it appeared to hit the water and disappeared.”

According to Hill, the object made no sound and by the time she’d gone to fetch her binoculars, it had gone.

“It appeared to grow

in size as it travelled, so my initial thought was it looked like a ball of fire but then I got wondering what it was,” said Hill.

“There were cars on the bridge at the time commuting so I was thinking one of them may have also seen it.”

Police, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Stardome Observatory were approached for comment.

A police spokesperson said they had received no reports on the incident, and police had not attended any incident in relation to the sighting. A CAA media contact confirmed they had

also not received any report of anomalous phenomena in the area.

Grant Christie, an astronomer at Stardome Observatory, was approached by the Times for theories on what the object may have been.

When it was suggested the flash may have come from a meteor, Christie acknowledged the circumstances needed for a meteor to be ’glowing’ as described to enter the earth’s atmosphere, would be remote.

“An object glowing at that level would have to hit the atmosphere travelling at terminal velocity”

said Christie. “Meteorites start burning up at around 100km out of the atmosphere and continue burning up until they are dust.”

Christie said it would be an extremely rare event to see something (a meteorite) at night and velocity; and angle to the ground of the projectile would have to be determined before the meteorite hypothesis could be upheld.

A meteor that big would make a “pretty big splash” he said, making it at odds with the lack of sound reported by Hill.

To produce a glow of the magnitude described, the object would have to be significantly bigger than the grapefruit-sized space rock that crashed through the roof of a resident’s property in Ellerslie in 2004.

Bayleys has sold five substantial retail properties to a mix of New Zealand and Singaporean investors at a total value of close to $100 million. Two of the sales, totalling $66.45 million, which settled during Covid-19 Level 4 and 3 lockdown, were of Auckland suburban shopping centres both anchored by Countdown supermarkets.

The largest of these was the Kelston Mall, which was sold on behalf of PMG Funds for $43.4m by Bayleys Auckland brokers. It was purchased by a private investor who attended a Bayleys Knight Frank Investment New Zealand seminar in Singapore.

The other neigbourhood shopping mall transaction involved the Meadowlands Shopping Plaza, at 112 Whitford Road in Howick which settled last week.

It was sold to a private New Zealand investor for $23.05m. Located on a 1.886ha site with 5215sqm of retail space and 303 car parks, it was built in 1993 with a major renovation undertaken in 2011.

It has a 96.85 per cent

occupancy with its current lease to anchor tenant Countdown running until 2026. Bayleys broker Cameron Melhuish says the supermarket (previously Woolworths) is among a number of founding tenants still in occupation, which also include Unichem and AA, with 12 tenancies having renewed their leases since 2018.

He says an added attraction was the under-utilised site’s Local Centre zoning which provides future development options, allowing for buildings up to four storeys with residential on upper floors.

Featured in Bayleys’ Total Property and Investment New Zealand portfolio, promoted in Asia late last year, the property attracted more than 100 enquires from domestic and offshore parties, with six expressions of interest submitted.

Johnson says the Singaporean purchaser of the Kelston Mall was the under bidder on Meadowlands.

“They were still keen to secure a similar type of property within 30km of Auckland’s CBD.”

espite several days of rain, Watercare is urging Aucklanders to continue their efforts to save water.

While Auckland officially remains a drought zone, the rain has been very welcome but still leaves the region well below normal levels for this time of year.

Watercare on Friday confirmed the region’s dams in total are at 43.32 per cent capacity compared to 76.85 per

cent which is normal for this time of year.

The Hunua Range on Thursday saw the dam there topped up by just 0.5mm and 0mm in the Waitakere Ranges. For the past seven days rainfall measured 49.5mm and 70.5mm respectively.

A Watercare spokesperson said the rain hadn’t made much difference at all to overall water storage. As at Friday, the dams have increased less than 1 per cent since last Monday.

Meanwhile, Watercare has reminded Aucklanders of the need to observe water restrictions and to save water wherever possible.

Thursday’s water consumption was 426 million litres while the seven-day rolling average was 415m litres. The target for May is 420m litres or less per day.

“We need all Aucklanders to do their bit and save water by cutting shower times and so forth.”

Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918 in Howick and districts As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.

arly in 2020, the New Zealand Government stored pandemic equipment for an emergency occasion such as Covid19.

Many families interviewed remembered the Spanish Flu of 1918. At the end of the awful Great War of 1914-1918, soldiers returned to a subdued welcome including some in Howick who later died of the ‘flu. At one stage there were 60 waiting to be buried in Howick. Our soldiers in France suffering battle fatigue, poor unsanitary living conditions, over-crowded tents and poor rations, succumbed quickly. There was no resident doctor in Howick.

Clarie Howie was asked to help the gravediggers dig more graves as they could not cope. Clarie was paid 25 shillings per grave in the

Emergency hospital in the Howick Town Hall.

Pakuranga Methodist graveyard in Pakuranga Road. He said the smell was awful. But the gravediggers said, “a stiff whiskey afterwards and you’ll be alright”. Edwin Roberts, another Pakuranga farmer, ran a shuttle service for prescriptions on his motorcycle from the doctor to the Otahuhu or Ellerslie pharmacies. One day he made five trips to Otahuhu on the rough metal roads. There was no pharmacy in Howick at that time.

gara. The ship had passengers and crew suffering from the “simple influenza” as the politicians called it. The ship was not put into quarantine. This influenza killed more than 25 million people world-wide and 8600 in New Zealand of which more than 2000 were Maori.

The Howick Town Hall in Picton Street, and Whitford Hall, were converted into isolation wards for ‘flu patients. Community volunteers nursed the sick, washing patients, boiling laundry bedding, providing meals and running messages all without power in Howick.

were used. The Red Cross, Scouts and Girl Guides and teachers helped community volunteers.

Schools, churches, hotel bars, race meetings and shops were all closed.

Many doctors were still overseas treating war wounded.

It particularly affected 30 to 40-year-old men. Vomiting, diarrhea, pneumonia and death followed quickly. Some turned black, reminding some of the stories of the Black death plaque of the 14th Century. When the Armistice was announced in November 1918, there were some celebrations, but 268 died that day in Auckland from

the ‘flu.

Pakuranga farmers closed off their farms. Whit Blundell on Butley Farm [in today’s Butley Drive] saw no visitors and the children stayed at home. They killed a sheep and fished for eels or sprats in Wakaaranga Creek.

Treatment of the flu was ineffective. Inhalation sprays of zinc sulphate and wearing a bag of camphor around your neck were recommended.

One Howick lady took up smoking to “kill the bugs”. The Government gave out small bottles of whiskey, brandy or stout to “stimulate better health” of poor people with sickness at home. Some gave frequent lemon drinks and bed rest to survive.

The crisis eased after two months. An inquiry was held and there were major changes providing electricity, treatment of sewage, better housing and reticulated water especially for Maori communities. Today we have a free influenza vaccine for those over 65 and others considered at risk.

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Ambassador Stacey Morrison lost her mum to breast cancer.

roadcaster and Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Ambassador Stacey Morrison is encouraging Aucklanders to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast this July, to help raise urgent funds needed to support patients and save lives.

Last year around 1200 breakfasts were held in Auckland, where more than 1000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

With more than 3300 women across the country diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and more than 650 a year still dying, the need for support is greater than ever.

This has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, where around 400 women who would have received a breast cancer diagnosis missed out on getting mammograms or a referral from their GP, delaying their ability to start treatment.

Proceeds from Pink Ribbon Breakfast will go towards helping these women get the support they need, as well as those already undergoing treatment.

They will also help to

drive early detection and ground-breaking research to prevent further deaths.

Stacey Morrison, who lost her mum to breast cancer aged just 45, said she’s delighted to be the face of Pink Ribbon Breakfast for the second year in a row: “I’ve been inspired by the resilience shown by so many as Covid-19 became another issue to deal with, on top of their cancer treatment. Breast cancer touches so many Kiwi families and I feel for them, especially during this stressful time.

“As we rally together as a nation, I’m also hoping we can show some love for people affected by this devastating disease. Hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast is a fun and easy way to let patients know they don’t have to face breast cancer alone.

“It’s a fantastic way to raise awareness about breast health and honour the ones who have survived or the ones we’ve lost. All while raising much-needed funds for this important cause – which are needed now more than ever.”

Avoid the school rush Bus, trains and ferries in Auckland are having to cope with increased demand particularly at the end of the school day while still operating on reduced capacity.

The number of people using public transport in Auckland has gone from 126,000 on Monday of last week to 148,000 on Tuesday.

Alert Level 2 means public transport is managing with physical distancing restrictions leaving around 43 per cent seated capacity.

The result is capacity issues on some services when schools get out for the day.

Drivers will have to leave passengers behind if the bus, train or ferry reaches the maximum capacity.

If you can travel before 2:30pm or after 4pm that will help manage the after school rush.

WE MUST PROTECT OUR COCKLES In reply to Terry Stretton re the numbers of cockle collectors at Cockle Bay, I also am very concerned at the increasing numbers collecting. The seasonal closure was put in place 8 or 9 years ago due to the large number of people collecting mainly over the summer public holidays.

When this closure was consid-

ered, it was never imagined that hundreds of collectors would turn up each day over the open season.

No other beach in NZ has these numbers on a regular basis.

I have noticed most collectors spend up to 1½ to 2 hours each low tide high grading, digging up meters of beach to get the biggest cockles they can find. Some are even using garden rakes to do so which can damage the juvenile shellfish.

These large cockles are the breeding stock which will make this beach unsustainable in the very near future if measures are not put in place .

Over a five year period, the total cockle population dropped by 71 per cent and cockles over 30mm made up a large proportion of these numbers. Total cockle population numbers can be deceiving as a lot of the smaller cockles don’t survive due to a number of factors.

How can we save this precious

I understand many people dislike his manner and particularly dislike his polices but conflation and hyperbole hardly tempers the situation.

Re ‘Common cause’ (Dr Mike Schmidt, Times, May 26).

I agree with Dr Mike Schmidt that Covid-19 has dealt another blow to developing countries.

And a poor person certainly produces much less carbon dioxide than a rich one. But the answer is not to burn more coal. Because it is cheaper to build new wind and solar plants than new coal plants.

Reports from Bloomberg NE, (financial advisory and asset management firm) Lazard and the International Renewable Energy Agency all say electricity from renewables is some third the price.

Carbon Tracker has forecast that within 10 years, electricity will be cheaper if the world closes down existing coal-fired stations and builds wind and solar plants.

Plaza security team winners

he Guardforce Security team at Pakuranga Plaza has picked up a top award from the New Zealand Security Association.

The NZSA has announced the second Covid-19 Guardian Award winners are a team from the Plaza.

This campaign was established to recognise essential service security guards’ efforts during Covid-19 lockdown.

The public nominated guards who had gone ‘above and beyond’ during the pandemic lockdown.

The winners are Lutelo Hausia (site security manager), Kelemete Makalio, Mark Tavoi Solomona, Meketi Silva and Phillip Lova.

The team was nominated by Allan Wharerau, general manager of Guardforce Security, but the nomination was prompted by multiple commendations received from Pakuranga Plaza retailers and shoppers as well as the property manager.

“This team have proved to everyone visiting the Plaza that they are rock stars,” Wharerau said.

One of the centre retailers highly commended the team saying, “They are caring and friendly and easy to communicate with, always wanting to know if we were okay.

“We value what they do and how much they care about the people that have worked through this difficult time, as well as putting their lives at risk for all of us.”

The NZSA introduced the Covid19 Guardian Award as a way in which the wider community could recognise and say thanks to security personnel for their efforts.

NZSA CEO Gary Morrison is thrilled with the number and quality of nominations received.

He said judging was very difficult but the Pakuranga team stood out “because there were so many brilliant recommendations for them”.

With more than 25,000 New

Zealanders working in the security industry, nearly double the number of police, private security has always had a critical role in keeping Kiwis and their property safe, especially during times of crisis, said Morrison.

The campaign calls on the public, business owners and other essential services who have used private guards to nominate individuals who have gone above and beyond or simply have been a reassuring, kind and considerate face during these testing times.

A web form has been established on the NZSA website where nomi-

nations can be made including a place to upload photos or videos of guards doing a great job.

The NZSA aims to award one guard a week with a special trophy in the lead up to the annual New Zealand Security Awards nomination period starting in late May. ast week marked the official unveiling of ‘Kiwis in Business’, a brand new podcast featuring interviews with Kiwi business owners, following the successful release of five pilot episodes.

‘Kiwis in Business’ is a melting pot of informal, yet informative interviews by public relations specialist and former Howick journalist Linda Shackelford, of Expand PR, who sets out to explore the different personalities, ideas and skillsets of innovative and entrepreneurial Kiwis.

“As a former journalist, I’m passionate about talking to Kiwi business owners about what makes them tick. During the four years that I’ve been running my own boutique PR business, I have been hugely impressed and supportive of my fellow New Zealanders who have built some amazing businesses from scratch,” says Shackelford, a former Howick College student.

he Picton Centre Walkers Group was first started in about 1989 by Janet and John Zaadstra of Bucklands Beach at the Uxbridge Centre and was known as the Uxbridge Walkers.

They created and recorded more than 150 different walks around Howick and the surrounding areas.

These walks are still used today.

When the Uxbridge Centre was closed for renovations in mid-2015, the group had to look for a new home so the Picton Centre was found.

Now they have a new group called The Picton Centre Walking Group with about 120 recorded walkers.

They have an average of about 24 walkers taking the walks twice a week - Monday and Thursday at 9:30am.

On returning from their walk, most join for morning tea and talk for $1. This has provided a donation to the church of about $1600 per year.

uckland Council will reopen the remainder of its libraries and most of its pools across the Auckland region from this week .

The reopening, along with the phased reopening of many community venues over the coming month, will come as welcome news to book lovers, keen swimmers and those who use the council’s arts and community venues for a raft of activities, including recreation, education and celebration.

Pools across Auckland opening on Wednesday June 3 include Lloyd Elsmore Pool and Leisure Centre.

Community venues for hire opening from Tuesday June 2 include Clevedon Community Hall and Fencible Lounge. “Our venues for hire teams are working closely with Local Boards and other users of our venues for hire to best adapt and meet the needs of our community,” a spokesperson for council said.

Mayor Phil Goff welcomed the reopening. “It’s great to see more of Auckland’s libraries, pools and community venues reopening after the lockdown and a sense of normality

“There will be strict guidelines around physical distancing and hygiene while enjoying council venues to lessen the risk of future community transmission of Covid-19.”

Auckland Council chief executive Stephen Town says the council has worked hard to reopen its pools responsibly and safely in an environment where water restrictions are in place and health and safety remains a top priority.

“This is a fine balance,” says Town.

“Our communities love our pools and

we have partners and user groups who rely on our facilities to be open so that they can continue to operate their own organisations and businesses.

Town says the council is ensuring pools can reopen for exercise while also playing its part to help Auckland’s water conservation efforts.

“This means that when people do go to one of our pools, they will see some changes. Firstly, we will only be opening lap and dive pools for training and exercise, and those pools designed for leisure and play will remain closed, as will the showers in our changing rooms.”

There will also be some changes to opening hours and people will need to continue to maintain safe social distancing, even while in the water.

The Ministry of Education and New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI) Te Riu Roa have agreed to settle the pay equity claim for teacher aides, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced on Thursday.

This will see more than 22,000 teacher aides, mostly women, being valued and paid fairly for the work they do.

“Teacher aides are frontline workers who work closely with some of our most vulnerable children. They play an important role in our schools as we respond to the challenges of Covid-19 and get the country back on its feet,” Hipkins said.

“The teacher aide pay equity claim was lodged in 2016, and I’m pleased that an agreement has now been reached. This is a milestone for teacher aides and a significant step towards addressing pay equity for women in the education sector.

The new rates will range from $21.20 to $34.68 per hour, and be effective from February 12, 2020.
