Fresh out of John Key-mould; MPs’ reaction to Muller By JIM BIRCHALL

T

odd Muller, the new leader of the National Party following a coup last Friday, is being likened to former Prime Minister John Key. After the announcement Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller had succeeded Simon Bridges as the leader of the opposition, with Nikki Kaye elevated as his deputy, the Times

sought comment from Local MPs Jami-Lee Ross and Simeon Brown. Ross said, “National supporters and members have wanted a new leader for 18 months. They finally get their wish. There will no longer be a need for National voters to dream about the day of someone new taking over. “They have in Todd Muller the successful business leader fresh out of the John Key-mould. But, as the

party sings the song of unity in public, it will still be a rollercoaster ride through to the election. “A move from Government to Opposition always sees parties rip themselves apart before they are ready to govern again. “New Zealanders looking for vision and hope will struggle to see that projected from National for a while. A vote for National is still a vote for a party that will sit in the

opposition.” Ross believes Muller - a relative unknown - “will likely need until 2023 before he is really ready.” “This election will see a lot of strategic voting as New Zealanders decide to vote for people and parties they believe can achieve wins for them. “Voters usually struggle to see the logic in voting for candidates from parties that they know will sit in

opposition unable to fulfill election promises. “That will be the challenge for every National candidate across the country.” Brown said “With the new leadership of Todd and Nikki National is raring to go as we ask New Zealanders to trust that our team and our plan are the best options to get the country through these dark and difficult times.” ➤➤Turn to page 3

was recently asked to assist a journalism student with an assignment piece on our community’s spirit during lockdown. I had no hesitation in praising the response of our locals. People have been assisting those who are elderly or high risk to purchase or pick up groceries and others have made regular phone calls to check on the welfare and brighten the day of those who live alone. Our businesses and families have generously contributed to foodbanks and other charitable groups. It was a delight to see teddy bears and other furry creatures peering from windows, bringing joy to families as they walked together during their daily exercise – and provided a cheerful distraction to our little ones, many of whom had been quite frightened and very unsure about what lockdown meant. Social media showed us that families were pulling out old board games, baking up a storm together and devising interesting activities and things to play with. Covid-19 brought restrictions, especially around social distancing,

and the ability to have large gatherings. Sadly, we were unable to hold our local Anzac Day services but this did not stop our local people commemorating this special day. They decorated their street frontages and ‘Stood at Dawn’ by their letterboxes accompanied by the haunting tunes of buglers, and bagpipers. Looking to the future, I know we are faced with change. Sadly, there are members of our community have lost their employment and it has become evident that many local businesses are in a precarious situation. Once again, our locals have rallied!

Social media has been filled with pages set up to promote the services of our shops and services; and the queues outside our cafes and food outlets are showing a loyal response. Many organisations may look at the way they operate after having had staff work from home. Our local board has continued to work this way throughout lockdown, holding its workshops and meetings online. We are now faced with looking carefully at our work programme whilst implementing cost saving measures. On a positive note, there has been a great deal of neighbourhood community networking during

Covid-19 which had not existed in our area for a long time. I hope that we can continue the valuable work that has been done to re-establish support groups to enable us to keep an eye out for each other. For many, lockdown has been easy. Most have understood the necessity. For a huge number, it has been socially debilitating, stressful and hugely constraining. The lessons learned by us all from being a part of this once-in-a-lifetime crisis of Covid-19 will certainly remain with us for a lifetime. ➤➤Adele White is chair of Howick Local Board

Future of fundraising post Covid-19 By FARIDA MASTER

COUNCIL

No axle to grind: Skate ramp taken Local skateboarders are frustrated a ramp was taken away by council contractors last week. The ramp was used by skateboarders, young and old, but had fallen into disrepair. The area was the subject of a complaint by Howick Bowling Club which appealed to Auckland Council to have the spot cleaned up. A spokesperson from Howick Bowling Club acknowledged the club had made a complaint to council about skaters “helping themselves to timbers and a billboard” (waste materials left over after a renovation) and to police, regarding anti-social activity that included an incident where a metal pipe was thrown through some shrubbery, damaging a canvas roof. A council spokesperson confirmed to the Times “an illegal dumping call-out to the Howick carpark found a 44 gallon drum, a broken skate ramp, broken furniture and other assorted rubbish which was subsequently cleared by contractors”. The bowling club spokesperson said they are aware of an online petition asking council to provide for a new ramp and mentioned a conversation with a parent of one of the skaters who felt kids needed ‘somewhere to go’, and disagreed with the club’s actions. Another parent, Victoria Fenner, who has two children aged four and six, encourages them to scooter and skate as “it’s an awesome way to encourage activity, co-ordination and great family time”. She is disappointed “some grumpy neighbours have put the kibosh on it”. The bowling club spokesperson pointed out that there are existing ramps at Lloyd Elsmore Park and Barry Curtis Park.

ow are charities supposed to raise funds when businesses are reeling under the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, is a question that not-for-profit organisations have been wrestling with. With economists predicting that full economic recovery post Covid-19 will take years, local charities and non-profit organisations are deeply concerned about fundraising or tapping into businesses that earlier supported them. In a recent Zoom webinar hosted by Auckland North Community Development, Therese Lanigan-Behrent consultant for organisations with a social conscience provided the muchneeded relief by offering funding options for managers, trustees and fundraisers who work for not-for-profit organisations and local community groups. Talking about the current streams of grant funding that have not dried up, she said that Community Trust Foundation North (www.foundationnoarht. org.nz) is “carrying on as normal”. Other options worth tapping into include Creative NZ Funding (www.creativenz.govt.nz) that gives resilience and short-term

grants; Community Organisation Grants Scheme (www.communitymatters.govt.nz) and Trustee companies like Perpetual Guardian (www.perpeturalguradian. co.nz). “Other pro-bon support partners could be Help Tank (www. helptank.nz) and Lets Collaborate (wwwletscolloborate.co.nz) as well as free online one-onone clinics for charities that help draft funding applications like info@charities.govt.nz” Fundraising in the near future will be about online presence with auction fundraisers, virtual quiz fundraisers and crowdfunding campaigns, Lanigan-Behrent said. Giving an example of the recent RSA-initiated poppy replacement project with give-alittle page donations, she men-

tioned that bucket collections may take a while to come back. A break-up of the philanthropic giving in New Zealand shows that bequests, crowdfunding, one-off donations and regular giving constitutes 58 per cent of giving. Funding from grants is a close second at 27 per cent— it includes gaming trusts, trustee companies, family and individual trusts, NZ Lottery grants, community trusts, energy trusts, licensing trusts, community foundations, corporate foundations, government contracts, Local Board and Auckland Council. Interestingly, business giving comes a third at 15 per cent. It involves sponsorships, cause related marketing and payroll giving. Other streams of fundraising

National Party has new leader ➤➤Turned from page 1 He then added “I want to thank Simon Bridges and Paula Bennett for their stewardship over our Party these last couple of years.” “They say that Leader of the Opposition is the toughest job in politics, particularly when you’re up against a first-term government and Simon and Paula deserve an immense amount of gratitude for their service to both National and New Zealand. selection as Leader of the National Party.” Luxon added, “I’ve known Todd for some time and he is thoughtful, intelligent, and cares deeply about our party and country. He will be an outstanding leader and I look forward to campaigning with him.” Muller said in a statement shortly after his elevation to leader, “There is no Team Todd, there is no Team Nikki, or anyone else – there is only Team National,” Muller said. “National has always been

include special events that vary from street appeals, nominated charity event, virtual events, community events, social enterprise, sales service and merchandise. Another eye-opening conversation was initiated by Guillaume Dehan of Fund a Future as he revealed that nearly half of all donations made to New Zealand charities are left unclaimed. “Did you know that donations to ChildFund are eligible for a 33.33 per cent tax rebate from Inland Revenue? “If you think it’s not worth the effort to claim your donation tax rebate, you’re not alone. Most donors find it a painful process to get a rebate on a $30 donation. That’s millions of dollars that could be used to make a difference. “Every year Kiwis give $1.5bn to NZ charities out of which around $257 million is claimed; $216m is unclaimed.” Speaking of upcycling donations he said that Fund a Future helps individuals to get a tax rebate on donations which are then gifted to charities of their choice.” Dehan ended saying they optimise the payment of donation rebates –with a charitable edge, thus helping people’s donations to go further.

Celebrating our Pakuranga Lockdown Heroes The Covid-19 lockdown was an incredibly challenging time for all New Zealanders, but there are some in our Pakuranga community who shone through and brought some positivity and hope to an otherwise grim situation, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga. “It’s a common theme in New Zealand that in the toughest of times when things are at their worst, we find a way to come together, take care of one another, and move forward as a unified nation.” “We’ve seen it countless times in recent memory, through the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch and Kaikoura, the tragic events that befell our Muslim community on March 15 last year and now the societal and economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.” “There is no doubt in my mind that New Zealand will recover from this, as we have done after every challenging moment in our history before.” Brown says it’s time to recognise those people in who put the needs of our local communities above their own during these difficult last few months. “Nothing we do will be enough to thank our Lockdown Heroes for their efforts,

but at the very least we can offer our gratitude and a token of thanks to those who were truly exceptional,” he says. “Today, I am calling for nominations from around our community to help identify our family members, friends, and neighbours who deserve to be recognised as Lockdown Heroes. By their very nature these heroes won’t want credit or praise, which is precisely why we should offer it. “If you know of someone in the Pakuranga and Howick areas who deserves to be recognised as a Covid-19 Lockdown Hero, please visit simeonbrown.national.org. nz/lockdownheroes to fill in the nomination form.” Nominations close on June 12 and Brown will then go through the nominations and select a top three to receive a special token of thanks and to highlight their contributions to the community during the coronavirus pandemic. “Thank you to all of those who have gone above and beyond for our community, particularly our frontline workers who put their lives on the line to keep things moving,” says Brown. “We will be forever grateful to you all, and I am looking forward to recognising our local lockdown heroes.”

owick Historical Village is to remain closed until summer due to the financial effects of Covid-19. The village, which also had to cut staff, like many museums throughout New Zealand, has suffered a serious financial impact from Covid-19, says Marin Burgess, president of the Howick & Districts Historical Society. “We’ve felt the effect of the severe decrease in revenues from tourism, events and education and projections estimate that it will take a significant amount of time for these sectors to recover,” she says. “To help get us through this difficult period, we are actively seeking financial support from Auckland Council and other agencies, as well as the private sector. “Our unique living history museum contains some of the oldest original buildings in Auckland and the stories they tell give us a picture of history rarely experienced. “To preserve these historic buildings, heritage

Where to from here? Right now, it’s “Business Unusual” as businesses reopen after the Covid-19 pandemic and adapt to an unfamiliar environment. It appears that generally, as a Nation, we have survived the health crisis and the lockdown of our lives, businesses and the economy, but now what? Can we carry on running our businesses the way we have always done? At Drumm Nevatt & Associates (DNA) we believe that if businesses continue to do what they have always done then in this economic environment they are not going to continue to get what they have always got. The world has changed, the economy has changed and businesses must change and evolve if they are going to survive the economic impact of Covid-19 that is just starting to hit us. The government support for businesses is extensive including (but not limited to) the wage subsidies, grants to obtain professional advice to support your business, Small Business Cashflow Loans, and some taxation concessions. But alone that is not going to be enough for a number of businesses to survive. Businesses need to make a Business Recovery Plan (RBP) to ensure that they can recover from the pandemic as strongly as possible. During times of adversity we are often forced to think outside the square, to reinvent the way we work or behave.

The four main opportunities for reinventing businesses are: · Innovate - introduce new products or services; · Re-engineer - improve the design of a product or system; · Adapt – change process to fit within the new environment;

· Widen Your Lane – broaden your product or service offering. There have been a number of examples of businesses reinventing themselves during lockdown, including the company that pivoted from selling travel pillows to hair clippers and the motorsport businesses that started producing ventilators. Have you considered how your business could reinvent itself? A RBP should, however, contain much more than a plan to reinvent a business. Small business owners need to ensure that they have a cashflow forecast for the next twelve months, identify risks to the business and strategies to mitigate those risks, and understand the minimum weekly or monthly sales level they need to achieve to remain viable. If you want to find out more about creating a Business Recovery Plan then contact the team at Drumm Nevatt & Associates Limited to discuss or join us for our webinar on 28 May by registering at www.dnaca.co.nz. LAW

Fencible Law: improving business during lockdown R

ichard Galbraith, Managing Director of Fencible Law, a general practice law firm in Howick, kept very busy improving and modernising business during Covid-19 Lockdown. The enterprising business owner called for action as he and a team of technology specialists used the time to develop a new, easy-to-navigate website which was launched this morning. The user-friendly Fencible Law website with the latest search engine optimisation makes the client onboarding process easier. “In the future, the onboarding process will include all necessary steps for the client to fulfil their AML obligations, together with digital verification, which will simplify the process” he says. “As in any crisis, technology is developed and adopted rapidly. In our profession there have been tremendous changes to the way we work including, the digital signing

of documents, zoom meetings with clients and remote witnessing of legal documents”. “I expect to see more digital signing in the formation of Agreements for Sale and Purchase of Real Estate, loan documentation and accounting services,” he says. As the Covid-19 crisis began to unfold, the astute owner of the law firm thought of innovative ways to roll with the punches. Knowing that the new Trusts Act

2019, passed on 30 July 2019, will come into effect on 31 January 2021, Richard decided that the firm needed to get prepared for reviewing their clients’ trusts in advance. “The firm looks after 380 Trust clients who need reviewing due to the new legislation, so it is important to set the stage for an easy administration process” he says. “The interim time frame has allowed us to adopt best practice systems which enable us to assist

our clients with any necessary variations to Trust documentation. These are being prepared and introduced so immediate compliance with the new Act is achieved.” Another lockdown initiative was the creation of an easy-to-read online newsletter titled The Fencible Lawyer. Our first issue provided clients with topics of interest during lockdown. With three separate editions, the

quarterly online publication provides clients, real estate agents, and the local business community, with updates at Fencible Law together with legal/property/business articles that are useful. Sprucing up the business during lockdown, Richard says that with high-quality lawyers and effective systems in place, as Managing Director of Fencible Law he now plans to increase his presence as an Independent Professional Trustee assisting Trusts to run smoothly and most importantly work efficiently and fairly for the beneficiaries. With an avid interest in technology, the lawyer with 30 years’ experience has other exciting projects that are in the pipeline but right now he is not telling – till they are ready to be hatched. Auckland household waste volumes up during Covid-19 lockdown There was a notable spike in kerbside recycling and rubbish volumes as lockdown forced Aucklanders to dine at home more than ever before. Overall, 1870 more tonnes of rubbish (12 per cent more) and 326 extra tonnes of recycling (3 per cent) were collected from Auckland households in April of this year compared to 2019. Councillor Richard Hills, chair of the environment and climate change committee, puts this lockdown waste spike into perspective. “This increase in household waste is natural with people staying in and eating at home during alert levels 3 and 4. I’m really proud of the efforts that everyone made over this time and the household waste increase reflects that we were staying inside. “Over April we received 26 per cent more glass recycling than last year. This equates to just over 1100 tonnes. Auckland’s glass recycling is all pressed here in New Zealand, so the spike was good news for local recyclers. “We will continue to advocate for onshore recycling capacity for our other recycling material

such as plastics, paper and cardboard. Processing this material locally means we won’t need to ship it overseas, and it can instead be a valuable resource for Aucklanders.” Council’s Waste Solutions team worked around the clock to keep services running safely during lockdown. Collectors were able to maintain the remarkable 99.9 per cent accuracy standard of kerbside collection services across the entire Auckland region. There were only 4 tonnes more aluminium cans recycled in April and 18 per cent less PET plastic bottles. Auckland Council collected 27 per cent more HDPE plastic, which is the opaque plastic used for milk bottles and cleaning products. Both recycling and rubbish tonnages were down in January and February of this year, which suggests

that normally households are producing less waste, especially when accounting for Auckland’s growing population. Roughly 80 per cent of the total waste to landfill actually comes from commercial sources, not households, so lockdown may have a net positive in overall waste across Auckland. Environment and climate change committee chair Councillor Richard Hills encourages people to keep considering ways to reduce their waste footprint. “Rinsing your plastics, glass, and cans, and properly recycling can make a difference, but we also need to move away from a throwaway culture and single-use plastic more generally. “Everyone needs to reduce their waste to achieve a sustainable future for Tamaki Makaurau.”

OPINION

Budget 2020 paints a very bleak picture N

othing in recent history has brought about such global disruption as the Covid-19 pandemic. Kiwis have sacrificed much through the restrictions of the lockdown but our efforts have worked well so far and now it’s time to start thinking about what comes next. This year’s Budget reveals some of the bleakest figures New Zealand has seen in decades. Debt will balloon to $200 billion, around $80,000 more per household, while unemployment is set to skyrocket by as many as 160,000 people, to 9.8 per cent this September as 1000 people each week join the unemployment benefit. Real GDP is projected to drop by 4.6 per cent this year - these are truly sobering figures. Despite this, we should be confident that New Zealand will bounce back. Kiwis will

Simeon Brown make new plans and find new opportunities. The main question is how do we avoid making the economic disaster worse than it needs to be and how can we get back on track? National would reduce the damage by opening up more of the economy as quickly as we safely can. Even now in Level 2 we should be doing everything we can to open up the TransTasman bubble and getting international students through quarantine to sustain our international education industry. The Budget includes a large number of big spending items but very little detail or accountability for what it was to be spent on.

To reduce job losses, we need to get some cash into the hands of struggling small businesses, to help with costs such as commercial rent. Incredibly, given the scale of spending in the Budget, we saw nothing beyond the welcome extension of the wage subsidy to businesses which are suffering the most. National would support struggling businesses by allowing them to claim a portion of last year’s GST back to support them with cash flow through these tough times. Thankfully, we appear to have got through the worst of the health crisis – and with good testing and tracing we should stay there. What’s needed now is a strong team to get New Zealand’s economy moving again, and National has the plan to get it done. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga

Eastern Busway high quality, safe The Eastern Busway will provide a rapid transit, car-free bus corridor, similar to the Northern Busway, carrying more than 30,000 people per day between rapidly growing south-eastern suburbs and the rail network in Panmure. Once operational, people will be able travel between Botany and Britomart, by bus and train, in less than 40 minutes (cutting more than one third off current journey times). Additional features include cycling and walking connections alongside major roading improvements around Pakuranga Plaza to reduce congestion and significantly improve access for commuters towards Mount Wellington. Funding has been committed by the Government and Auckland Council. The Eastern Busway will play a critical role towards providing east Aucklanders with significantly improved transport options while unlocking the economic potential of the area and supporting Auckland’s post-Covid19 recovery. between Panmure and Pakuranga will be completed in 2021. We are now working hard to accelerate the remaining stages of the project. Following, a quickfire Registration of Interest process, three bidders will now compete to have the right to work with us to finish designing and building the remainder of the project. These are due for completion in 2025. These final stages of the Eastern Busway represent a $700m investment (of total project budget of $1.4 billion) towards high quality and safe public transport, roads, walking and cycling infrastructure for the fast-growing communities of east Auckland. The next stages of the project will generate more than 400 jobs in the short-term and provide work for thousands of people and dozens of businesses in the construction sector. The flow-on economic benefits to east Auckland will be welcomed by many. The successful bidder will be required to work with us to deliver positive environmental, cultural, social and employment outcomes – such as local community employment and upskilling. These localised benefits are important and will be a legacy for years to come. Other positive community outcomes such as placemaking and urban renewal will also be a focus for us. Longer term, a reduction in journey times and better accessibility to other parts of Auckland will improve the range

of employment and leisure options for east Aucklanders. In short, the Eastern Busway will generate around $680m of additional GDP over a 40-year period. Improved reliability, urban renewal and genuine transport choice will also enable more people to visit and live in the area and this will result in further local investment. Panuku Development Auckland is using stage one of the Eastern Busway to revitalise Panmure’s town centre and create a high-quality urban neighbourhood. Major developers are showing an interest in the wider area, capitalising on retail, hospitality and accommodation opportunities created by transport investment. The high frequency and reliability of Eastern Busway services will deliver customers with a ‘turn up and go’ option that is already experienced on our rail network. Recent examples show that Aucklanders in areas previously under-served by public transport change their travel behaviour when we provide high quality transport infrastructure. There were over eight million trips on the Northern Busway in 2019 and it continues to see double digit year-on-year growth. We expect to see similar levels of growth on the Eastern Busway. Investments made in rapid and frequent rail and busway projects in Auckland have been highly successful and outperformed usage projections. As a result, the busway will be future-proofed so it can

be converted to higher capacity vehicles, such as trackless tram technology, to cater for further projected growth. International experience shows that fast and frequent busway services can comfortably accommodate the area’s expected demand and growth, but we are keeping an eye open to the future for possibly even greater success. This is a game-changing project for east Auckland and will have wide-reaching social and economic benefits for the region. It is shovelready and we are working hard to deliver this essential project for those in east Auckland. Shane Ellison Chief Executive, Auckland Transport

Common cause

The pandemic has hopefully taught us an important lesson. We can realise this through an unfortunate similarity between solutions to the pandemic and global warming. Our response to the pandemic has been a lockdown which will result in a global economic recession. This downturn is predicted to force almost 500 million people into extreme poverty. The final outcome is yet to be determined but there will be deaths and the consequences will persist for years. The pain of the lockdown will be mostly felt by the poor, especially those in developing countries. Many of the current answers being offered to global warming will further exacerbate matters. If you were Pakistan or Kenya or another developing country that desperately needs to pull themselves out of poverty, would you follow the suggestions we are making to mitigate global warming? Or would you build a cheap coal plant rather than expensive solar? Developing countries could say, ‘we can’t afford your measures, we have to develop, you did, now it’s our turn!’ A better approach than a “one size fits all” solution, such as the lockdown, which while achieving one objective has unintended consequences, is needed. The current suggested and broad global warming strategies will not

Well done that man – and council Today (Wednesday, May 20) when I was walking on Bucklands Beach, a young man alerted me to a paint spill that was draining onto the rocks at the northern end. When I rang the council, the person I spoke to alerted the action team straight away. Within the hour, compliance response officer Cate Longley came down to the reserve. COMMUNITY

Garnishing Grove to help students start fresh By FARIDA MASTER

Ministry of Health releases Covid-19 Health and Wellbeing Survey Results

G

oing back to school after a prolonged lockdown could be unsettling for students and helping them make a symbolic fresh start is the formal opening of the Garnishing Grove at Farm Cove Intermediate on Thursday. Planting the first olive tree in the community garden that students along with landscapist Lance Millward helped create is Pakuranga PM Simeon Brown. “This is a legacy that you are leaving behind for generations to come. When you grow old, your grandchildren will come here and you can tell them you designed this garden,” Brown told envirogroup and food technology students. Linda Harvie, principal of Farm Cove Intermediate said the location of the garden next to the food and biotechnology room is of special significance. “Like in MasterChef, children can run out in the garden to get a herb or edible flower whilst cooking,” she says. The idea behind the newly-landscaped community garden - which was once just a patch of dirt with a flagpole - is health and wellbeing of students, said assistant principal

Tamara Jones. “Their wellbeing has been a concern to us and so we thought of doing something special in the first week of school after lockdown,” Jones said. “This is a student-led initiative with our students designing the grove end of last year. The grove is a resource for the community to come and pick up garden fresh herbs and fruit. The school is utilising local businesses and being supported by our local MP.” Twelve-year-old Skyfi Lin, who created a 3D design of the grove,

said the best part is the final design which is an amalgamation of designs submitted by students. Year 8 student Finlay Newton said they fundraised $6000 for the garden by organising mufti days, a school disco and a wheelathon last year. The school’s board of trustees will make a contribution to match the funds collected by students. Lance Millward, a professional landscape architect with Verdant Green, and a school parent is proud of the fact that a dead space (with two camphor trees) has now been transformed.

At the beginning of April, the Ministry of Health started issuing a daily survey to collect information about the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders, how they are doing, and how they are being impacted by Covid-19. The Ministry of Health is using this data along with other sources of information, such as call volumes to help lines, feedback from services and specialist mental health and addiction service data as ongoing monitoring of how people are doing. “In the most recent week of surveying, 99 per cent of people told us they are getting along with other members of their household, 99 per cent can support the wellbeing of their children and 95 per cent are able to pay basic living costs,” Robyn Shearer, deputy directorgeneral, mental health and addictions, says. “Most people report being happy with life as it is.” Thirty-one per cent of people experienced feelings of loneliness

or isolation at times, and 8 per cent reported depressive or anxiety related symptoms, however, it hasn’t been possible to estimate how much of this is due to the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions says Shearer. “We know Covid-19 may have significant, long term effects on people’s mental wellbeing. It’s important to track how people are doing so we can target support where it’s most needed. “We are aware that there is a lot of different research being conducted at the moment and each will use different methodologies and sample groups - which means they are likely to come up with differing results. All of this information provides us with a useful indication of what is going on.” Mental health and addiction chief clinical advisor Dr Arran Culver says, “We recognise some people are struggling, and we know that the level of need varies in different communities.”

Your chance to win $12,000 Biz Marketing Giveaway By FARIDA MASTER

THE ULTIMATE EAST AUCKLAND $12,000 RE-BOOT YOUR BIZ MARKETING GIVEAWAY!

W

ith local businesses reeling under the economic impact of Covid-19, Bo Burns, local businesswoman and member of the Howick Local Board has come up with an exciting initiative to boost business. Last week the go-getting entrepreneur of Promo Factory got together with a group of likeminded local businesses, including Reay Neben publisher of Times Newspapers to work on offering a worthwhile opportunity to one lucky local business. The idea behind it is to help reboot local businesses struggling to make ends meet. “By June 11, one local business will win the ultimate marketing experience valued at $12k,” says Bo. While the Times Media will give away a free multimedia advertising package valued at $2000; other local marketing businesses have generously offered a range of different marketing services that cover – Google ads set-up, facebook and instagram social media package, website development, printing package, branded promotional items, product photography, brand consulting and design package as well as a marketing planning and

support package. “There are no ties or no hidden agendas, just one lucky Howick / east Auckland Business will win this full package as a giveback and thank you from other local businesses,” says Bo. “I had the idea to give away $1000 of my own products, and thought what people really need is a complete re-boot and boost after this financial disaster many of us are experiencing.”

She says the response has been overwhelming. “It took only three hours of my time to reach out to reach out to local like-minded marketing legends last Friday, and I am honestly over the moon with the astounding amount of $12k worth of giveaway! “I was not expecting everyone to say yes, let alone offer what they have and be able to offer such an amazing prize,” she says. The competition was launched

Reay Neben says, “Times Media is happy to rally together to support a chosen local business with a multimedia advertising package of $2000 that will give them the much needed shot in the arm during these unprecedented times.”

Libraries finally opening doors A

round 31 of the 55 Auckland libraries have opened their doors to the public post Covid-19. Auckland Council has opened its 400-plus community facilities and services in a careful and staged manner to protect staff and customers. Other libraries will follow after the Queen’s

Birthday weekend. Each library has a safe capacity to maintain social distancing and when that capacity is reached libraries will operate on ‘one in / one out’ principle - like at the supermarkets. Visits of 30 minutes or less are being encouraged. In order to maintain social-distancing, there will be no programmes or

events at Alert Level 2 and some public computers may not be available. A contactless check-in process to enable contact tracing if required is in place at all Auckland Council facilities, including libraries. Wi-fi will be turned on at all libraries. Overdue and non-hold pick-up fines have been

removed until June 30. There will be no additional fines during this time. One new service being launched is ‘Ready to Go Reads’ which are preselected and pre-packed paper bags of five specially chosen books in a range of genres which can be booked online or simply picked up ‘grab and go’ style by friends or relatives.

FRAUD

Police warning over fake online business scams Police are warning the public to be aware of fake Facebook pages set up in the names of NZ companies. Dozens of people have been scammed and these victims have lost thousands of dollars between them. olice officers from the Auckland City Financial Crime Unit are currently

investigating several complaints from people who have lost money to “retailers” advertising digital and electronic goods online. The businesses are typically listed on Facebook as having stores located in the lower South Island and usually purport to sell cellphones, laptops and tablets. The victims are asked

to transfer money into a NZ bank account and the goods are never received. Police are aware of dozens of complaints from people around the country who have lost money to fraudulent Facebook businesses, with tens of thousands of dollars lost collectively to scammers. As a result of enquiries,

police have identified that the fraudulent businesses are being run offshore in south east Asia. The scammer will generally contact someone in New Zealand via Facebook Messenger and offer them a “job” working for them. Contact your bank in the first instance then report it to Police by phoning 105.

A RIGHT ROYAL

Consumer NZ has lodged a Fair Trading Act complaint with the Commerce Commission about Air New Zealand. The complaint calls on the commission to investigate Air New Zealand’s refusal to provide refunds on all cancelled US flights. Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said flight rules in the US entitled passengers travelling to or from the States to a refund if their flight was cancelled. However, Air New Zealand was advising customers on some US flights they could only get a credit. “We’ve had a steady stream of complaints from consumers who we consider have been given misleading information by Air New Zealand about their refund rights.” Under US regulations, passengers on flights to or from the United States, including transiting passengers, are entitled to refunds where flights are cancelled, regardless of the reason. Duffy said the US Department of Transportation confirmed to Consumer NZ that passengers have a right to a refund even when they are transiting through the US on their way to another destination. “We provided this information to Air New Zealand. However, it’s continued to tell customers transiting through US airports they’re not entitled to a refund. Instead,

Consumer NZ believes Air NZ should refund people affected by US flight cancellations. Photo: Jumpshift

customers are being offered credits. We consider this conduct to be misleading and in breach of the Fair Trading Act. We’re making this complaint because Air New Zealand isn’t doing the right thing for these customers.” Consumer NZ has asked the commission to take urgent action. Duffy said the situation highlighted the need for law changes to better protect Kiwi consumers. Rules in both the US and EU entitle passengers to refunds whenever flights are grounded. However, airlines here are only liable when flights are cancelled for reasons within their control. In response to Consumer NZ’s concerns, the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Kris Faafoi has recently stated he will review the rules.

RUGBY UNION

Is club rugby on the rocks? Former All Blacks player Pita Alatini speaks on the future of New Zealand Rugby Clubs amidst the uncertainty of a global pandemic. He spoke to second-year AUT journalism student Nathan Limm

A

ccording to World Rugby, there are 520 clubs in New Zealand, boasting more than 100,000 players. Not one of those players is representing their union. Covid-19 has seen perhaps the most drastic action by a New Zealand government in our nation’s history. But while lockdown is keeping the coronavirus in check, its impact on sports may be felt long into the future. Pita Alatini, who played 17 tests for the All Blacks between 1999 and 2001, is the director of rugby at Pakuranga United Rugby Club. Pakuranga United is one of the largest clubs in New Zealand, registering around 500 junior players and just under 200 senior players at the beginning of the 2020 season. Alatini says the lockdown equation is simple: no rugby means no club. “We’re really digging into the unknown at the moment and that’s quite scary...Not having Tuesday or Thursday training as well as Saturday gatherings is huge, especially for us as staff. None of those functions happening means there’s no money for the club.” Just like small businesses, clubs require money to pay staff and maintain their fields. But while Covid-19 restrictions continue to postpone the 2020 season, clubs are left with

a timer on their future. While the fields remain empty, so do the stands, the bar and the restaurant. Clubs are built on social exchange. The casual beer with friends after a match is integral to the survival of the entire facility. Alatini says the best way for Pakuranga United to maintain a sense of community and interaction with their players is through social media. “[For coaches], it’s keeping in touch with their players and seeing if they’re all good in that mental and social space. There are definitely platforms where guys can still get together - albeit apart - to have a little social aspect and keep in touch.” This connection is not only impor-

tant for the club’s current player base; a relationship with schools is also of vital significance. The reality of senior club rugby is that it is everdependent on the influx of leaving schoolboy players. However, with the entire season in doubt, roughly 25,000 high school rugby players will be affected. The magnitude of 1st XV rugby in New Zealand is not to be underestimated. Modern-day stars such as Damien McKenzie, Anton LienertBrown and Reiko Ioane were all on display in the Land Rover 1st XV competition just a few short years ago. Missing out on a year’s worth of future All Blacks, Super Rugby and

club stars will likely harm the stream of high-quality players into New Zealand Rugby’s development system. Even without Covid-19, rugby is a declining sport in New Zealand. According to a School Sport New Zealand Census, rugby union has seen a 12 per cent decline in its player base between 2014 and 2018, with a 6 per cent drop in 2018 alone. For rugby clubs, the few players who continue with rugby after high school are crucial. Pakuranga United is in the unique position of having seven east Auckland high schools in-zone for the club. However, if restrictions continue to plague the duration of the sea-

son, maintaining relationships with school teams will be a difficult task. Alatini, who regularly visits schools and works with school rugby coaches, thinks the best way to stay in the minds of schoolboy players is through cyberspace. “For us, it’s diving in and finding out how we can remain in contact by doing some stuff online with them, keeping them engaged. Coming out of it [the Covid-19 crisis], you’d be hoping by then they’ll be firing and ready to go.” Ultimately, the survival of all clubs in New Zealand will be dependent on their capacity to engage with their players and fan bases. Alatini says if they are unable to connect with their people, the club will cease to exist. Nevertheless, he is confident in the ability of Pakuranga United to remain relevant and present in local minds. “There’s still strong support within the community which will always be there. It’s just a matter of always touching base to keep those guys engaged so they help get these members back.” Clubs will start to reopen as New Zealand slowly conquers Covid-19, but the true impact of the crisis is yet to be felt. The sporting community has no choice but to hunker down and ride this wave of uncertainty.

RUGBY UNION

PURC ready for 2020 season starring roles for their club. “It features a re-opening – we’ll have the scoreboard coming on, the lights coming on, we’ve had pictures of the lines getting put down, it’ll have netball players shooting through the hoops, we are back and we are open,” said Hackett. “For us as a club we’ve hunkered down and obeyed the Government restrictions and levels with a big effort put in by the board to maintain our staff.” The club has used the government subsidies to retain staff as they play a key part in the recovery process. Pakuranga employs six fulltime staff and 10 casuals. “The big thing is our staff continued to work during the time and put together all the plans for this reopening,” he said. “To be fair, what we’re going into is sport in my day. We used to play winter sport in the winter and finish in the spring. For a lot of parents and a lot of children, it’s going to be their first experience of winter sport how it used to be which I think is a fantastic thing. “Currently, we’re gearing up for the return-to-play protocols and that’s governed by the New Zealand, Auckland Rugby Union as well

as Netball NZ.” Seniors will return to train from Wednesday now the gathering numbers have increased to 100 from 10. “What we do know is that on the 13th of June, our senior teams can start two weeks of preseason games prior to any competition and it’s just been released that council will let us play through till September 26 which will allow a full season,” said Hackett. “For us, sport is critical to the recovery plan of the club. The restarting of our Gymnasium and Badminton club was major and people coming back have flocked – it’s been great. Lloyd Elsmore Park Badminton clubs have not been able to start – so at the moment we’re open for members’ casual play. “A major part of our recovery plan is working with our sponsors to make sure that they’re not only there for us now but are there for us in the future and we really want to know how we can be there for them as well. And so our Live Local, Play Local, Support Local – motto - is huge for us.” Some of the things the club is working through at the moment includes not being able to use changing rooms, cleaning of gear

and contact tracing of members. The limited numbers within their clubhouse at present is also significant. “They’re going to be a concern for our ongoing clubrooms business. Hopefully that will only be for a short period. On top of our club operation we run a hospitality function centre so the gatherings numbers moving should make it easier for us to operate,” said Hackett. “Basically, like many, overnight we fell from 100 per cent operating income and going quite well after a really successful touch season to zero – complete shutdown, lockdown. “We have to do is ensure survival of the brand of course – PURC is a massive brand in our community and we need to ensure its survival, and as a part of this we have a responsibility to ensure our staff are looked after and ensure we give as much security to them as we can.” PURC’s Netball Co-ordinator Amanda Dyason said everything was pivotal on the government this week easing gathering restrictions. There were changed to 100 from 10 yesterday. “If those numbers move up we’re pretty much ready to go. We’d

Our season we can extend right out until October so we can still go ahead with a full season – that’s not locked in until we know the gathering rules. We’re aiming for the competition to start on June 20.” ➤➤Pita Alatini , see page 19.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

ockdown has taken its toll on every sports club in the land and even the biggest are not immune the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. A couple of months later than planned Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) is gearing up to kick off its 2020 seasons for both rugby and netball. PURC general manager Stephen Hackett is under no illusions as to the enormity of the task ahead. While the club has been preparing for weeks for alert levels to drop and gathering rules to ease, Hackett acknowledges there is much to do before the doors and fields are fully open again. Most importantly, the board, he and the club are upbeat about the 2020 season. “That’s the key message for us is, welcome back to our community. We’re back, we’re welcoming and we’re going to support our membership in what is the new normal,” said Hackett. The club continues to embrace social media for this phase of its reopening with a recovery video featuring some big names in the games including ex-All Blacks Malakai Fekitoa and Charles Piutau, Joe Edwards and Tom McCartney all set to play
