Winter wellness –
Ways to avoid troublesome bugs
By Kim Jones, Nutritionist, Total Nutrition and Health With winter well on its way it’s hard not to think about catching a cold (or even influenza), once or several times during the season. So, what can be done to reduce the risk of falling victim to these bugs. Firstly, our immune system does not get enough credit. It is made up of a variety of defence cells, tissues and organs which work together to protect the body from infection. In addition, we have enzymes and peptides specifically designed to fight off any unwanted bacteria. If you do become sick, or even cut yourself, the body reacts by initiating chemical responses such as fever, swelling and inflammation to stop the spread and begin the healing process. So, what can we do to look after and enhance our immune systems?
Hydrate:
Fever, runny noses, and coughs can increase the risk of dehydration. Try to avoid drinking fruit juices as these contain a large amount of sugar; diluting them half and half with water is a better option. Tea, water, soups are all good sources of fluid. Avoid alcohol as this will slow down your recovery. Drinks such as diluted Gatorade or Powerade may be useful if you have diarrhoea or are vomiting to replace electrolytes.
Reduce sugar:
As mentioned, reduce the amount of refined sugar you are consuming from processed foods. Bad bacteria feeds on the sugar and can make symptoms worse.
Eat a variety of fruit and vege:
These contain essential vitamins and minerals to keep us healthy. Vitamins C, E and Beta-Carotene are antioxidants which mop up any free radicals which damage cells and membranes.
Exercise:
Aim for at least 30 minutes a day. Try to vary the type of exercise including cardio and weights but don’t over train as this can also damage your immune system.
Sleep:
Make sure you are getting adequate sleep and try to avoid too much screen time before bed as this can reduce the quality of your sleep.

By Kim Jones, Nutritionist, Total Nutrition and Health Omega 3 Fatty acids are essential for our health, however, we must rely on getting them from food as our bodies are unable to synthesise them. Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) is the parent omega 3 fatty acid which comes from plant sources such as flaxseeds, chia and walnuts. It can be converted in the body into eicopentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) but this process is very limited. Mostly, EPA and DHA are found in marine sources such as fish and seafood. The ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids used to be 1:1, however, as a society, we have started to adopt a westernised diet, full of processed and convenience foods so the ratio has now become more like 15:1. This is a problem as omega 6 fatty acids have been shown to be pro-inflammatory whereas omega 3 are anti-inflammatory. Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to have numerous positive effects on health such as reducing the risk of heart disease, improving inflammation and our immune system, benefiting brain and mental health, and reducing cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. So, how can we increase the amount of omega 3s we are consuming? 1. Increase the consumption of fish such as salmon, anchovies, blue cod, sardines, and oysters. 2. Increase consumption of flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts. 3. Decrease the amount of Omega 6 fatty acids. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids compete with each other to use the same conversion pathway therefore increased levels of omega 6 will reduce the amount of ALA being converted to EPA and DHA). Omega 6 rich foods are seed and vegetable oils such as sunflower and soybean oils. 4. If you don’t eat much fish or seafood, fish oil tablets are an option. Cod Liver Oil contains Omega 3 Fatty acids as well as Vitamin D and Vitamin A. Aim to have two marine sources a week and that will go a long way to improving our omega 3 to omega 6 ratio. Just remember to choose sustainable sources.
Move... By Kim Jones, Nutritionist, Total Nutrition and Health With the days getting shorter, colder, and darker, it is no wonder we lose our motivation to exercise during the winter months, however, it is this season that it becomes even more important to get moving. Winter has been associated with increased symptoms of depression. This could be due to a decrease in the amount of vitamin D we receive from the sun but a sure-fire way to start feeling better is by exercising. It is no secret, exercise stimulates the release of a chemical called endorphins which bind to receptors in the brain and help us feel good as well as reducing the perception of pain. Exercise reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, reduces stress, improves sleep and self-esteem and has a vast number of physiological benefits such as reducing the risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. So, what exercise should you be doing? Well, primarily, that which you enjoy! You are more likely to continue exercising if you are doing something you like such as taking the dog for a walk, playing squash with some mates, attending classes at a gym, or even dancing. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day at a moderate intensity. Try to include a variation of both cardio (walking,
running, cycling, swimming) with some resistance exercises. This doesn’t need to involve attending a gym and can be completed at home. An example of a home circuit without the use of weights could be 10x chair dips, 10x lunges, 10x squats and a 1 minute plank that you repeat three times. As we age, it becomes more important for us to do resistance exercises as we lose lean mass (muscle) and gain fat mass often without changing our weight so it can be hard to tell. Decrease in muscle in older adults can lead to frailty, increased risk of falls and fractures, dependence on others and a reduced quality of life. Just remember, some physical activity every day is better than none so get out there and get moving!

it about and how can it affect your health? Gut bacteria ferments fibre and non-digestible carbohydrates which reach our intestines undigested and produces short chain fatty acids. By-products of this process are gases such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane which we expel through our breath, and yes, as flatulence. Lots of different factors can influence the composition of our gut bacteria such as our diet, our genetics, even how we were delivered as babies or whether we were breast fed or formula fed. Alcohol, poor diet and stress can all upset the bacterial balance which can throw our digestion (and health) out of order. Research is starting to identify relationships between an imbalance in good and bad bacteria and several diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease, irritable bowel, mental health disorders and even central neural disorders. Having good levels of beneficial bacteria ensures your bowel is healthy and functioning well, can control hunger signals, supports your immune system, and even helps to absorb certain vitamins such as vitamin K, which is important

for blood clotting, B12 for cell and brain health, biotin and carnitine. So, what can you do to ensure you are consuming the right foods to support a healthy gut? Firstly, bad bacteria thrives on sugar, so start by reducing the amount of refined sugar in your diet. Include legumes, pulses, wholegrains into your diet for fibre which act as prebiotics that feed the healthy bacteria. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi and yoghurt contain good levels of healthy bacteria which encourages microflora to flourish. Probiotics are also an option but when choosing which ones best suit you, select those with high levels of bacteria per gram (aim for 10million) and contain specific strains (will often say clinically proven). Check the best before date and look for the claim “live and active cultures”.

Eating your colours By Kim Jones, Nutritionist, Total Nutrition and Health Although the wide array of different coloured fruit and vegetables may look nice, its important to remember they also have health benefits, many of which can be associated with the colour of the fruit. Phytochemicals (phyto meaning plant in Greek) are naturally occurring chemicals produced by plants, often as a protective mechanism, which have been found to provide protective benefits to humans. There are thousands of known phytochemicals and some of the more well known ones include polyphenols in grapes and tea, lycopene in tomatoes and flavonoids in fruit and vegetables. As well as being responsible for the varying colours of our foods such as red tomatoes and blue blueberries, they also provide broccoli with that slightly bitter taste and the strong odour and taste of garlic. These little molecules have a huge impact when it comes to protective effects and disease prevention. Antioxidants: Many phytochemicals have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants clean up free radicals produced by diet, environment and lifestyle factors and can damage lipids (such as

cell membranes), DNA and can trigger different diseases. Allyl sulfides (onion, garlic), carotenoids (yellow, red and orange fruit and vegetables such as carrots, capsicum, and tomatoes) and flavonoids (fruit and vegetables) are examples of phytochemicals which produce this antioxidant effect. Anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties: Anthocyanins, which are found in cranberries or red, blue and purple pigmented fruit and vegetables, reduce pathogens sticking to cell membranes such as in urinary tract infections. Neurological effects: Capsaicin (capsicums) and Curcumin (turmeric) may have neuro-protective properties such as protecting against Parkinson’s disease and alzheimer’s. Flavonoids may reduce age-related decline in cognitive function. Research is still required to find the exact effect these different phytochemicals have on the prevention of diseases, however, if you take anything away from this, it is that you should try to consume as many different coloured fruit and vegetables as possible. Not only do fruit and vegetables potentially contain disease-preventing chemicals, they contain essential vitamins and minerals, dietary fibre; the more colours you include, the more appealing your plate will look.

nature based therapy working for children Debbie Rowberry is a child and adolescent, emotion focused behavioural therapist, specialising in assisting children with dysfunctional emotion regulation and high behavioural or emotional needs. With a post grad in cognitive behavioural therapy and over 30 years’ experience in emotion mindfulness and meditation, Debbie has developed a unique and practical, emotion regulation therapy programme for at risk and high needs children. Coming from an abused childhood herself, Debbie knows personally that you may not be able to change the circumstances, but you can empower yourself inwardly to feel hope. Her programmes aim to bring hope and a greater sense of well-being to vulnerable New Zealand children. Proactive in the community Debbie also facilitates early intervention emotion education programmes for schools. The Willow SEL programmes are free for Decile 3 and under schools through the SWIS programme. Upon researching that nature deficit was a leading cause of anxiety and depression in children, Debbie sold her family home and purchased 54 acres in Clevedon. Willow Therapy Farm is a nature based emotion education and wellness centre providing a range of programmes to empower children and their families. Willow Therapy Farm also provides therapeutic based holiday programmes for NGO’s and respite weekends for foster families.

Protein –
more than body-building! By Kim Jones, Nutritionist, Total Nutrition and Health When you think of protein, what do you think of? Meat, muscles, body building? Well it is much more than that. Not only is protein important for building and maintaining muscle mass, it provides structural support in the form of collagen and elastin, it makes up our enzymes, hormones and antibodies in our immune system, it affects cell signalling and it moves molecules through our bodies such as how haemoglobin transports oxygen in our blood. It is vitally important for every one of us, and unfortunately our peak muscle mass and strength starts to decline during adulthood. Whilst this is not a major cause for concern if we are consuming protein-rich foods, it is especially important for older adults who have higher needs (about 25% more) than that of younger adults. As we get older we lose muscle mass which leads to reduce strength and physical function which, in turn, leads to a reduction in independence and quality of life. Older adults may also start consuming smaller meals as they become full quicker. Loss of taste and smell sensations mean they no longer enjoy foods they may have in the past while loss
of chewing and swallowing ability, and health concerns such as high cholesterol, may lead to a reduction in the amount of protein consumed. So, to ensure we are getting the right amount of protein, protein consumption should be evenly distributed between breakfast, lunch, and dinner as this will ensure maximum protein synthesis occurs. As protein increases satiety (feeling of fullness), this may potentially lead to weight loss. Animal protein is more like that of humans, however, the necessary amino acids that we require are all provided by plant sources. Good sources of protein are meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, and eggs plus beans, and legumes. An example of how to include protein in all meals may be poached eggs for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch and grilled fish for dinner.

New doctors welcomed
Dr Danielle Gerrard
Dr Brendon Aish
Dr Naz Bajoory-Kettoola
Dr Suyin Kour
Dr Jonathan McPherson
In January, Dr Danielle Gerrard was welcomed back to Crawford Medical after a nine-year hiatus. During her break Danielle worked in urgent care, was a hospital medical registrar, completed radiology training and returned to general practice about four years ago. Her areas of interest include paediatrics and skin health, particularly lesions and minor surgery. “I enjoy the interaction with children and often they are very scared and anxious of doctors,” Danielle says. Danielle is also very interested in the art of dermoscopy, which involves studying skin lesions under a microscope, identifying if something is harmful or not, as well as performing the minor surgery. Danielle grew up in Pakuranga Heights and lives with her husband and children in Farm Cove and in her few moments of spare time, she enjoys being with her family and friends.
For the past 12 years Dr Brendon Aish worked as a general practice doctor at Thames and he is pleased to be back in Auckland. This year he moved to Howick with his wife and four children and they love the area. Brendon enjoys working with children and is experienced in ear, nose and throat medicine. He has worked thoughout New Zealand and Australia, including about 12 months at Starship Hospital. “I enjoy gaining a rapport with children – gaining their trust, seeing them smile and cooperate. When they come back to the doctor, their faces light up because they remember our friendship.” With experience in general surgery, Brendon continues to use his skills performing minor surgeries at Crawford Medical. Brendon enjoys working on classic cars and he is determined to finish one car that is in the middle of restoration.
Patients will now see a lot more of Dr Nazeeha Bajoory-Kettoola at Crawford Medical because she recently increased her consultation hours. All areas of general medicine interest Dr Naz and she has a focus on paediatrics and women’s health. “I enjoy working with the wide variety of patients at Crawford Medical – the different ages and ethnicities.” She has additional training and experience in IUD, Mirena®, and Pipelle® endometrial biopsy. Dr Naz is fluent in English, Arabic and Aramaic an ancient language that was spoken by Jesus. “My heart is in preventative medicine, which includes screening programmes such as cervical smear tests and mammograms, as well as smoking cessation, immunisation and dealing with obesity and diabetes.” When time permits, Dr Naz is a keen walker and the Howick region provides plenty of good tracks for her to explore.
New Zealand is undoubtedly increasingly multinational and Dr Suyin Kour encompasses a wonderful combination of cultures that evolves from living around the world. She is Malaysian-born Chinese and completed her high school education in Auckland and then winged her way to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. She further specialised as a general practitioner in Scotland where she met her husband who is from Norway. Their children were born in Scotland and in February they moved to Auckland for a lifestyle change and better climate. “I enjoy working as a general practitioner because there is a lot of variety and you never know what is coming through the door next.” Suyin loves working with children and older people. She is fluent in English, Malay and conversant in Mandarin.
Originally from Edinburgh, Dr Jonathan McPherson studied medicine there and met his wife in Italy. He and his wife planned to spend one year in New Zealand but the experience was so positive they have made the nation their home for more than seven years. Jonathan decided to leave a semi-rural practice and join the Crawford Medical team to be closer to friends and important volunteer work he does with his church. He enjoys working with children and in cardiology but says general practice is rewarding because he is at the coalface of healthcare and every day is different. “As a GP you are in the frontline of medicine and can affect long-term changes in individuals and communities.” Jonathon worked in hospitals in the UK and New Zealand, and has more than five years’ general practice experience here. As well as volunteer work, Jonathan loves travel, reading and music.
