Educating youth on peer pressure and alcohol A new, internationally acclaimed theatre-based education programme launched in Auckland recently, aimed at equipping Year 9 students with the skills they need to counter peer pressure to drink alcohol.

Smashed, which was established in the UK in 2005 and will this year be delivered in 21 countries worldwide, has been brought to New Zealand as part of responsible drinking initiative the Tomorrow Project and is delivered by the Life Education Trust. The first performance, featuring a play about a group of young friends who find themselves in trouble as a result of drinking alcohol, was delivered to 400 students across three shows held at Mt Roskill Grammar School in Auckland last month. Each performance is followed by an interactive workshop where pupils will be invited to probe the cast on issues brought up during the play and discuss the consequences of underage drinking.

Tomorrow Project spokesperson Matt Claridge says establishing the Smashed programme in New Zealand is an exciting opportunity to address the issue of under-age drinking as well as encourage a responsible approach to alcohol as adults. “We know from our own research that the younger people are when they begin drinking alcohol, the more likely

“The unique theatre-based approach to education is proving incredibly successful globally as students are engaged in an interactive way. The UK – where more than 380,000 pupils have participated in the programme has seen a significant drop in the number of young people drinking alcohol, from 45 per cent of 8-15-year-olds in 2003 to 14 per cent today.”

Smashed will reach 18,000 Year 9 students this year across 120 schools with funding currently being secured to roll out to all 60,000 Year 9 students in 2020.

Life Education Trust CEO John O’Connell says Smashed represents the organisation’s first foray into secondary schools.

Hearing loss is one of most common conditions affecting older people, so it is a surprise that many people are not addressing it adequately or quickly enough.

As the population ages, people are becoming more interested in discovering the consequences of not managing hearing loss. it is well known that the more hearing loss we have, the more negative effects it may have on our psychological state. depression is one of the main issues. The worse our hearing gets, the more difficult it becomes to communicate with friends and family, causing us to become socially isolated which can lead to depression.

Now researchers believe hearing loss affects our cognition and increases risk of dementia.

A study has found that compared with older adults with normal hearing, those with hearing loss were more likely to develop dementia. in fact, the research showed there was a relationship between the level of unmanaged hearing loss and the level of dementia risk.

Compared to people with normal hearing, a mild hearing loss was associated with a two-fold increase in the risk of dementia, a moderate hearing loss with a three-fold increase, and severe hearing loss with a five-fold increased risk.

Apart from dementia, there is also now increasing evidence that there is a relationship between hearing loss, brain function decline and the loss of brain tissue.

Many studies have shown that older adults with hearing loss have an increased chance of problems with thinking and memory when compared with those with no hearing loss.

The researchers believe the extra effort we are putting into hearing creates an increased load on our brain function which is also important for our memory and decisionmaking.

Early detection of autism is critical as it provides access to early intervention, improving children’s developmental outcomes and quality of life, and decreasing family stress. dr Josephine Barbaro from La Trobe University, Australia created a developmental surveillance programme for the early identification of autism known as the Social Attention and Communication Study (SACS).

The SACS involves training of child health nurses to monitor children for autism at their routine, community-based healthchecks between 12 and 24 months of age.

The SACS has 15 years of research on its implementation to facilitate the early identification of children with autism. It is the most accurate and sensitive method for the early identification of autism in the world, being utilised across Australia, the AsiaPacific and Europe. Autism New Zealand has teamed up with La Trobe University and victoria University Wellington to provide training on the use of SACS in New Zealand.

The first training day took place on June 5 for Well Child/ Tamariki Ora (Plunket) nurses and wider staff in Wellington.

The nurses were also involved in research to evaluate their perceptions of the SACS and learning during the training.

Escaping NZ for Warmer Climes If you suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and want to escape to warmer climates over the winter – consider planning your trip 8-12 weeks in advance, rather than jumping on a plane tomorrow.

The 8-12 week timeframe allows for a travel medicine consultation with your GP to assess your risk and to get your travel vaccines updated.

Risks also include thermal stress - going from a cold to a hot climate within a 24 hour period. Maintaining your hydration is important. Enerlyte (rehydration salts) is fully funded and can be provided on script from your GP. Assessment of your destination and activities for risk is important – with a focus on altitude and climate as these can affect your health as you age.

Make sure you are up to date with routine Vaccination such as Tetanus, Flu and Measles/Mumps and Rubella (MMR). Yellow Fever vaccine should be given cautiously to people over 60 years and it should not be given to people who are immune suppressed.

If you are on long term medications take enough for your trip. Counterfeit drugs may be common overseas. Take a copy of your prescription and pack your medicines in your carry-on luggage.

Travelers’ diarrhoea is the most common complaint for remote travelers.

Dengue fever is on the increase in many countries.

Applying a good insect repellent is the best way to prevent this. The biggest cause of fatalities amongst

travellers is motor vehicle accidents, the risk being reduced by good decision making about seat belts, road crossing and using only authorised public transport. Do not ride in cars after dark in developing countries or after dark in questionable areas.

We also advise joining your GPs’ Patient Portal so that you can access your patient record anywhere in the world 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Having a good action plan can make a real difference to your trip. Seniors should consider supplemental travel health insurance to provide cover in the case of injury or illness overseas. If you are travelling to remotes places, consider evacuation insurance.

BREAKThROUGh ASThMA STUdY SET TO REvOLUTiONiSE Findings from a New Zealand-led asthma study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last month have discovered a way to significantly improve the treatment and management of asthma – the world’s most common form of respiratory illness.

The study conducted by Medical Research institute of New Zealand (MRiNZ) has found that a simplified, single combination inhaler inclusive of both preventer and reliever medicine can more than half the risk of a severe asthma attack, in comparison to the current best practice of administering both medications separately.

The international study led by Professor Richard Beasley, director of MRiNZ and Scientific Advisory Board Member of Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ (ARFNZ) enrolled 675 patients with mild asthma from New Zealand, Australia, UK and Italy over a 52-week period.

The study’s results showed the combination preventer-reliever group’s risk of an asthma attack was reduced by 60 per cent

compared to those who just used a reliever alone. The single combination approach was also shown to have a 56 per cent reduction in risk for those who used both medications separately.

Professor Beasley comments, “The findings from this study are exciting and have the potential to be a gamechanger in the way doctors treat mild asthma and simplifies treatment. This means that patients would not be required to take a preventer inhaler twice daily even when they are experiencing no symptoms and instead, only take a combination preventer/reliever when they are experiencing symptoms”. dr Stuart Jones, medical director of ARFNZ comments, “For those with mild asthma, implementation of the study’s findings will lead to a reduction in flare ups, which means less time feeling unwell and more time doing what you enjoy in life, all while using inhaled steroids sparingly. Professor Beasley and his team should be congratulated on this great piece of work”.

Govt ‘taking mental HEALTH SERIOUSLY’ Budget 2019 delivers on many of the recommendations contained in the Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction, He Ara Oranga, the Government said after its May 30 Budget announcement.

The Inquiry revealed that a new approach to mental health and addiction is needed in New Zealand which the Government is starting to deliver.

Current data suggests one-in-five New Zealanders experience mental health and addiction challenges at any given time.

This comes at huge social cost to individuals, families – and to the economy. It’s estimated that in 2014 the economic cost of serious mental illness alone was $12 billion, or five per cent of Gross Domestic Product.

New universal mental health services will be rolled out nationwide over five years (recognising the need to train more qualified mental health workers and build new facilities).

Key Budget Initiatives:

The new service will place trained mental health workers in doctors’ clinics, iwi health providers and other health services so that when people seek help it is easy to access and immediately available for those suffering mental health issues. For example, when a GP identifies a mental health or addiction issue they can physically walk with their patient to a trained mental health worker to talk.

The mental health worker will have an ongoing relationship with the person in distress, helping to guide and support their recovery.

Health Minister David Clark says it needs to be easier for people to get help early, before small issues become major problems. “By the end of the rollout we expect up to 325,000 people a year will be able to access this new model of primary mental health care – these are the people He Ara Oranga identified as the ‘missing middle’,” Clark says.

Zhanna Gee, founder of holistic health and well-being company Slim By Nature in Australia, has raised concerns that women have become too ashamed to go on a diet.

“I am worried that many women have become too ashamed to embrace a healthy lifestyle due to the growing “anti body shaming” Zhanna Gee and “body beautiful” movements,” said Mrs Gee. “There are a number of women who will attempt some kind of diet without any form of education, or even support from family or friends.”

The body positivity phenomena recently prompted the founder of Greatist, a health and fitness site, to defensively write, “It’s OK to want to lose weight”, in response to criticism.

“Many people in the body positivity movement believe that the desire to lose weight is never legitimate, because it is an expression of the psychological toll of fat shaming,” said Mrs Gee. “So any public discussion of personal health or body size constitutes fat shaming.”

Mrs Gee’s interest in women’s health was born seven years ago after being involved in two separate car accidents resulting in a dependency on pain medication, crippling back pain, weight gain and the onset of depression. ”I started doing research on how to lose weight, which led me on a path to connecting with incredible naturopaths and nutritionists who I then worked with to develop and perfect a number of unique holistic formulas and eating plans,” said Mrs Gee. ”At the time I thought, ‘So many women could benefit from this’ and Slim By Nature was born from there.”

Mrs Gee said the Slim By Nature movement, which includes more than 30,000 women, aims to avoid the stigma associated with weight loss programmes and instead focuses on clean eating, detoxing and fat burning.

“The words ‘diet’ and ‘weight loss’ have such a bad name these days. As a company, we want to ensure that women feel safe, and are equipped with the right tools to aid their journeys to leading happier and healthier lives,” said Mrs Gee. “We absolutely support the ‘No Body Shaming’ movement, but we also know too many women are depressed and will try anything to look and feel better.

“The detox and fat-burning programmes are just the first step. My main goal for every client is to give them a healthy and happy lifestyle beyond the programme.

Kiwi kids learn to prevent injuries Every week more than 135 children are hospitalised in New Zealand for a range of unintentional injuries – of which more than half are due to falls.

During the month of May, more than 12,000 primary school students throughout the country have been learning how to prevent these types of injuries, through the ASB St John in Schools Programme.

The ‘Make it Safe May’ injury prevention modules, developed by St John in partnership with ACC, focus on the four leading causes of child injury requiring hospitalisation: burns, poison, falls/slips and drowning.

On average, St John treats and transports more than 70 children (aged 0-18) to a medical facility or hospital each week, due to falls or slips. Fractures make up more than a quarter of these incidents. Other weekly child hospital admissions include non-traffic transport like falling off skateboards (12), sharp objects (7), poisons (5) and hot objects (4). In addition, one child is hospitalised every two weeks due

to a water incident.

“St John is called to far too many preventable incidents involving children. We have been working with ACC to deliver bespoke modules with the hope of reducing the number of child hospital admissions due to unintentional injury,” says Sarah Manley, St John Director of Community Health Services.

Last year alone, St John treated and transported more than 3300 children to medical clinics or to hospital, due to falls and slips. “We have been coaching Kiwi kids how to avoid these common incidents by teaching them how to identify potential risks at home and at school, how to make safe decisions, the importance of knowing what we put in our mouths and keeping dangerous items out of reach,” says Ms Manley.

Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ (ARFNZ) has made a call for more education to the public on vaping and e-cigarettes. The Foundation stresses that the promotion of e-cigarettes being a healthier alternative to cigarette smoking needs to be a balanced discussion.

Letitia O’dwyer, CEO of ARFNZ said on World Smoke Free day recently: “We applaud the health Promotion Agency (hPA) and the Ministry of health (Moh) on advising that vaping could assist some people to stop smoking when provided with behavioural support, but we also hope that the educational information recognises that these products are not without harm themselves.”

The Foundation also highlights the lack of consultation with respiratory physicians throughout the development of the educational information for the public, “ARFNZ has repeatedly requested that a practicing respiratory physician who sees patients with respiratory conditions and is a member of The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) be appointed to both the Moh and hPA advisory panels – but this never happened” O’Dwyer says.

This lack of consultation has now been viewed as “biased” towards suppliers and retailers of vaping products, she says.

The Stroke Foundation of New Zealand is calling on people across the country to ‘Beanie Up’ this June in an effort to raise more than $100k to support their vital services to stroke survivors.

Launched last week, Beanie Up is a new and fun way to support stroke survivors, and their families/whanau and carers, while also getting something that is stylish and useful for winter.

Kiwis can buy a special Beanie Up beanie for just $10 (plus postage) at beanieup.co.nz “With this beanie you’ll not only keep your head warm this winter, you’ll make a massive difference to lives of thousands of people at the same time – a true win-win,” says Mark Vivian, Stroke Foundation CEO. Individuals, workplaces and community groups can also raise extra funds by running a Beanie Up event in June through Everyday Hero – using a link on the Beanie Up website.

Each year around 9000 New Zealanders have a stroke - that’s one every hour. And that number is predicted to grow by 40 per cent over the next decade.

The Stroke Foundation’s Community Stroke Advisor (CSA) service currently provides more than 34,000 hours of support to approximate 4000 stroke survivors every year. The Stroke

Foundation plans to expand this service in 2019 and the Beanie Up campaign will play a major part in supporting the funding for the service over the long term.

The Stroke Foundation has 25 CSAs working across the country. CSAs discuss and develop a plan to meet a survivor’s needs and how to achieve their goals. They also provide support, information and advice to build knowledge and skills; liaise with stroke clubs, community and recreational groups; and network in the community to ensure stroke survivors are getting the right services.

Stroke can strike at any age and most stroke survivors need long-term support to overcome the huge physical and emotional challenges they are faced with after experiencing a stroke. The CSAs also support family members who find themselves thrown in the deep end, with little knowledge about how to be a carer and look after their loved ones. ◆ Beanie Up runs until June 30.
