East health group established By Zoe Garden A public meeting held in March 2021 to discuss the future health needs for east Auckland has led to a community-minded health group being established. Counties Manukau Health stopped funding overnight care at any Urgent Care Clinic across the Counties Manukau Health district from July 2018. On December 15 last year Care Group who runs the Urgent Care Clinic East Care Accident and Medical in Botany Road announced that they would be no longer providing an overnight service; a service that they had been providing for 20 years. This decision caused a large public outcry across the community. On March 31 local MPs Christopher Luxon and Simeon Brown hosted a public meeting with Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) chief executive Margie Apa and board chair Vui Mark Gosche to express and discuss their concerns with the loss of East Care’s overnight service. It was also to participate in a discussion about the future of health care in east Auckland. “The meeting was held to discuss the future health needs of the locality,” Loretta Hansen, chief executive of East Health Trust PHO,

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown speaking at the East Care meeting. says. Following this meeting, Hansen has been working with Penny Magud, general manager of Locality Services at CMDHB, to establish an Eastern Locality Community Health Review Steering Group.

“identifying current and future health and social care needs of the Eastern locality community”. It is also tasked with “identifying how these needs might be met including potential delivery options and infrastructure requirements”. “It brings together local key community representatives to review the current and future health and social needs,” Hansen says. Each member of the steering group represents a sector of the community. “This is to ensure that CMDHB and PHO hear directly from and work in partnership with health consumers and community members.” The group will aim to deliver a strategy or proposal by July this year. The report that will be prepared for the DHB will outline recommendations around the health and social services the group wants to see being “taken forward by the DHB”. The timeframe enables the group to receive the outcome of the independent review of overnight service requirements commissioned by Counties Manukau DHB. “The CMDHB has always intended to review the overnight services following their decision to no longer provide overnight funding to urgent care providers (East Care),” Hansen says.

The establishment of this group is to ensure Counties Manukau Health hears “directly from and works in partnership with health consumers and community members, living and/or working within the Eastern Locality district”.

The steering group’s purpose is to provide a mechanism for health consumers and representatives of sub-sectors of the community to participate in the planning, development and delivery of health and social care services by

Flu jab programme all go Winter has officially begun and the national flu immunisation programme is off to a great start. • Over 1.2 million doses of flu vaccine have already been distributed around the country to GPs, pharmacies and health clinics. • Fifty-seven per cent of those 65 years and over, who are most vulnerable to the impacts of the flu, are now vaccinated. • Following the successful start of the flu programme for those 65 years and over, the availability of Fluad Quad is low. Afluria Quad can also be used for people 65 years and over and it is funded for everyone in this group. Auckland has plenty of stock ready and available to protect local residents, with more than 393,000 vaccines already distributed throughout the city so far, and more available to be ordered if required.

Drs Kidd, Anderson, Lloyd, Martin and Moh welcome new patients

The impacts of flu should not be underestimated and vaccination remains as important as ever. While high rates of vaccination and social distancing drove down influenza rates last season, we mustn’t be complacent about the potential impacts of flu, especially now that the public are actively out and about. Achieving high flu vaccination coverage is a key population health strategy for helping reduce pressure on our hospitals and health care system. Peak flu season occurs between June and August in New Zealand, meaning there is still plenty of time for New Zealanders to act to ensure that flu numbers stay as low as possible. Kiwis who have not yet been given an appointment to get their Covid-19 vaccine are advised to get their flu vaccine now from their local GP or pharmacist.

YOUR HEALTH – WINTER 2021

www.times.co.nz

Men’s health from Dr Davao Mariner June saw the promotion of men’s health week, a global health campaign to focus on health issues all men face and to raise awareness of steps men can take to help address these. Men are already on the wrong side of the health statistics, being more susceptible to conditions such as heart disease, blood pressure and diabetes, are represented at a higher rate in deaths from mental illness and melanoma, and the incidence of prostate cancer is increasing in New Zealand. These are statistics that we need to work really hard on together to significantly improve. Many health issues impacting men are preventable or the impact significantly reduced if caught early. Early intervention is KEY! Some issues can be sorted simply and effectively before they become bigger problems.

If you are concerned about something, speak up, talk it through and get checked by your health professional. Your gut feeling that something isn’t right is a good indicator, trust your instinct and get checked.

THERE ARE KEY SELFCHECKS YOU CAN DO TO BE PROACTIVE: a) Skin shelf check, look for moles that change size, shape or colour and for any lumps or growths that you think may be recent and you haven’t had checked before. b) When in the shower, do a quick check of your testicles to ensure there are no lumps. c) Check in on your mental state and that of your mates. It’s ok to not feel ok and talking about it is the first step towards your improved mental health.

A Times Supplement, June 2021 — 7

Your heart is the engine we need to keep running, an annual check-up by your health professional can prevent serious illness or death, and gives an opportunity to talk with your doctor on ways to improve your physical and mental health and reduce the risk factors. Men over 30 should start receiving their heart checks. When diagnosing and identifying medical issues and solutions, I find that an all-encompassing approach across the physical, mental and social facets of a person’s wellbeing delivers the best patient outcomes. They all interrelate and making a positive step in one area can have a significantly beneficial health impact in another. u Dr Davao Mariner MBChB is a GP at Marina Medical, at Half Moon Bay Marina. He lives in the Howick area with his wife and two pre-school children.

PUTTING A PERMANENT SMILE ON PEOPLE’S FACES For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way. Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about stateof-the-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and rewarding”

she says, keeping herself updated by regularly attending workshops and courses. Most partial dentures have anchors called clasps which are used to retain the denture in your mouth. These can sometimes show and ruin a beautiful smile. “Now we are equipped with technology to resolve this. There are so many

combinations that are now available that is hardly ever the same for each patient. If light metal frameworks have to be used you can be rest assured that they are nickel and beryllium free” she says. With more than 20 years of creating dentures it is no wonder Ugie has clients locally and around the world that sing her praises. Niche Denture Centre has its own onsite laboratory which means you don’t have to wait a week sometimes more for a repair or a reline. These can be taken care of onsite, helping you back into your smile almost immediately. Niche Denture Centre is situated conveniently on ground level with ample parking right outside the building and easy to access even for clients on wheelchairs.

TESTIMONIALS CORNEL BRITZ SAYS “For years I suffered with bad decaying teeth, covering my mouth with my hand when talking or smiling. I gradually became withdrawn and self conscious. Since Ugie from Niche Dentures has fitted me with a beautiful set of dentures I cannot stop smiling and now have the confidence to step out into the world with a confident smile. Thank you Ugie for your specialised and friendly treatment. You changed my life!!” SHEILA FISHER SAYS “thank you Ugie for enabling me to enjoy food again. Life101 runs programmes in the community.

Superstar facilitator sought to lead, inspire Life101, which offers life and financial skills programmes to people in prisons and on probation, community groups and schools, is inviting Kiwis to consider a career and mahi like no other. The social enterprise, which has been operating for eight years, delivers workshops around gaining employment, managing and investing money, and softskills concepts like resilience, personal leadership and mindfulness. Life101 is currently looking for a unique and inspiring individual to join its facilitation team and help deliver its comprehensive life skills programmes. Nick Carroll, co-founder of Life101, says the demand for Life101 programmes has grown in the past 12 months, and they’re looking for ‘someone special’ to join the small team as a Programmes Facilitator. “We’re committed to finding someone who wants to be a positive role model in their community, as well as that person we all know who likes to be the ‘life of the party’ - someone who loves being in front of people and never stops putting out positivity into the world. It’s not just about teaching important skills, but also motivating someone to want to put what they’ve learnt into action in their life,” says Nick. Nick says while facilitation experience would be helpful, it’s not a mandatory requirement for the role. “We’re open to taking on someone without a background in facilitation. It’s about finding someone with the X-factor, a passionate, patient people’s person with a great sense of humour, extremely

high energy and desire to help vulnerable communities. We’re looking for someone who can inspire others, is a natural storyteller and can ‘dance in the moment’ in front of a group.” Since founding Life101 in 2013 with head facilitator Phil Moon, Life101 has reached over 5000 people around Aotearoa and has been the catalyst in transforming many lives. “I love meeting people from all walks of life and seeing those lightbulb moments - that’s when you realise that what you’ve taught someone could impact their life for the better,” says Phil. “Working in prisons and probation centres has really opened my eyes to many of the systemic issues facing our communities. It’s nice to be able to show people important skills that can make a profound difference in their lives, especially when they tell me that they’re going to pass these skills on to their children and whānau,” says Phil. The role will involve leading the delivery of one-day and four-day programmes for groups of between 12 and 20 individuals across Aotearoa’s prisons, probation centres and schools. “It would be wonderful to find someone from the local community who is equally as passionate about making a positive change in society as we are. It’s such rewarding mahi and we have some exciting plans to be able to reach and support a lot more people over the coming years,” adds Phil. If you would like to find out more about this opportunity, please email nick@life101. co.nz or visit www.life101.co.nz.

Kiwi natural health exporters hamstrung by ‘outdated’ regulations

Are you looking for a Doctor? At Crawford Medical we are open from 7.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday and have a walk-in GP Clinic on Saturday mornings

New Zealand’s “outdated regulations” for natural health products have struck again, leaving local manufacturers unable to export millions of dollars of New Zealand-made products to key markets, says industry body Natural Health Products New Zealand. Medsafe’s “strict enforcement of outdated rules” means New Zealand exporters of natural health products and supplements will be unable to fulfil export sales, Natural Health Products says. It is calling on Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall to step in to help find a pragmatic solution so the industry can continue exporting and fulfil its contractual obligations to its customers. “No actual rules or regulations have changed, just the enforcement of them, and it puts our exporters in an impossible position. It places their existing customer relationships at risk of long-term damage due to an inability to

meet contracts for supply, and it will stifle their international expansion plans. The logical next step would be considering offshore manufacturing,” says Natural Health Products government affairs director Samantha Gray. For local manufacturer Vitaco this means risking the loss of at least $5 million in export sales (per year) and could result in job cuts if not addressed, she says. “Our business has been blindsided by Medsafe’s decision in November last year to apply

stricter enforcement of an existing regulation in a way that is unworkable” says Craig Kearney, CEO of Vitaco Health Group. “It means that we will be unable to export some of our products to key markets because of this decision and outdated regulations. We understand Medsafe is in a hard position but given how outdated the regulations are and the impact of this decision on Kiwi exporters we think there’s room to apply some common sense.”

There are two issues preventing export of products to international markets. Firstly, the wording on Free Sale Certificates is not accepted by many export health authorities. Secondly, last year, Medsafe changed the Free Sale Certificate Application process so that New Zealand exporters need to sign a declaration that products comply with New Zealand labelling requirements, even for products that will not be sold in New Zealand and were never intended to be.

By Zoe Garden A pharmacy in Pakuranga has become the first to provide Covid-19 vaccinations in Auckland. In April 2021 Director-general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed the Ministry of Health is not considering pharmacies as Covid-19 vaccination sites. This has been rectified as of July as Covid-19 vaccinations are expected to ramp up for general practices and pharmacies. Pakuranga Unichem is among them. On June 11 Unichem opened their doors for vaccinations. They are focusing on designated groups with 65+ being the priority. They have vaccinated about 1000 people. Unichem has previously worked with ethnic community groups and leaders to provide vaccinations and support to members of the public. They participated in a free influenza vaccination service, Community Flu Fighters, which was delivered by pharmacists and targeted people aged over 65 from the Asian community in the Counties Manukau Health District. “We’ve done a lot with the community,” Vicky Chan, the centre manager, says. “We have a wonderful relationship with them.” Chan and her team hope to remove barriers with the help of previously established relationships with the community. can get stuck behind a language barrier and confusion. “They know us,” Chan says. “We know them. So there’s a level of trust and communication there.” Some community members find it difficult to reach the pharmacy. “We work with community leaders to transport them here,” Chan says. “We’ve work with Shanti Niwas, Bhartiya Samaj and the Korean Positive Ageing Charitable Trust. They’ve all be wonderful and helpful.” Additionally, Chan and her team wish to educate their patients and the wider community on misinformation and any confusion they may have. “There’s a circulation of misinformation,” Chan says. “We want to abate any concerns.”

12 — A Times Supplement, June 2021

Vaccinations for the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand The COVID-19 vaccination rollout for the general population starts from the end of July. Our COVID-19 vaccination programme has built momentum steadily since February. We are vaccinating around 100,000 people a week at the moment. In the second half of the year we hit top speed and everyone in New Zealand aged 16 and over will be able to be vaccinated.

Moving to the general population So far, vaccinations have been made available to those most at risk of getting COVID-19 to limit the chances of it getting into the wider population. With more vaccine supply coming on, and having ramped up our infrastructure, vaccinations for everyone else in New Zealand aged 16 and over (the general population) start from 28 July. This is a very large group of people. To make this flow smoothly, we will break this down by age bands. All people aged 60 plus can book their vaccinations from 28 July. Then, two weeks later, people who are 55 plus. From there, new age bands will be opened up every 2–3 weeks based on confirmed deliveries of the vaccine and the speed of rollout to earlier groups. By mid to late August, invitations should be open for people over 45. By mid to late September, invitations should be open for those over 35, with everyone else being eligible from October.

Invitations Most people will get a direct invitation to book – either by email, text, phone call or in the post. You will then be able to book through Book My Vaccine, a new national booking system that will be online from 28 July, or phone a new national call centre. Availability of booking slots (the date, time and place you can be vaccinated) will vary between district health board (DHB) regions. Once you are eligible to be vaccinated, you can be vaccinated at any time. There is no cut off.

Other ways to get vaccinated As we go through the year there will be other ways for people to be vaccinated. These will include workplace vaccinations and other targeted vaccination events across the country. For some remote rural communities we will vaccinate all age groups at the same time to make it easier for them. Our successful whānaucentred approach to vaccinations will continue for Māori and Pacific communities and those with disabilities.

Even if your age band isn’t open, everyone aged 16 and over will be able to go to Book My Vaccine to register for an invitation from 28 July. Registration means we will be certain to have your correct contact details and when your age group is opened, you will get an invitation telling you it’s your turn to book.
