Learn terms before shopping An Oriental rug can be a long-term investment that pays off in style and function. Be informed with rug terms before you shop. What does “handmade” mean? “Handmade” can mean many things. Price and quality depend on a number of factors. • Hand-tufted: A tufted rug is made using a mechanical tufting tool that secures and inserts the yarns in the backing. Since the tufted yarns are not securely enclosed by a knot, the backs of these rugs are usually sprayed or painted with adhesives to secure the pile yarn. These rugs cannot be truly called Oriental rugs. • Hand-knotted: In a hand-knotted rug, a weaver ties a knot in each yarn. Each knot of yarn is tied securely around two or three strands of warp yarn, which is the vertical yarn set up initially on the loom as the basis for the rug that will be woven upon it. No mechanical tools are used. A hand-knotted rug will be more expensive than a tufted rug. • Shearing: After the rug is woven, overall shearing of the pile is done by hand, to an even depth or to variations of textural depth specified by the designer. Shapes within the overall design are usually incised, cut around carefully by hand to create dimension and clarity of design. • Knot count: This term refers to “knots per square inch.” The more detailed and complex the design, and the finer/thinner the wool, the more knots are required for clarity of color and design. High-quality rugs usually range from 50 to 100 knots per inch.

Where was the rug made? You’ve heard of a Persian rug or a Chinese rug or a Tibetan rug, all of which fall into the Oriental rug category, which covers rugs from China to Vietnam, Turkey to Tibet, and Iran to India. The finest Tibetan rugs are hand-knotted in Nepal and India. What is it made of? Many Oriental rugs are made from wool and/or silk. As the basis and primary material, wool is the most resilient, comfortable and durable material to use in these rugs. To add variations of color, texture and design, silk is often used as a highlight accent. Another interesting and durable material used for textural and color variation is a fiber called “allo” or Himalayan nettle plant. Oriental rugs often incorporate hand-dyeing and hand-carding as part of the weaving process. – HGTV

Multiply your yield with perennial onions

Discovery is an enjoyable pastime for a curious gardener. With each new squash, flower, or shrub, lessons in life as well as gardening are learned each year. During a silent auction a few weeks ago, I discovered the joy of new plants while my spouse learned that it’s not safe to take me to a silent auction. The basket was filled with supplies for seed saving, so I camped out near it in order to outbid anyone else who wanted it. Swooping in after the other bidders left, I counterbid each entry until it was just me and one other person, a stubborn woman named Connie. As the price rose, my spouse wondered if we couldn’t simply buy the items for less. “Yes I could, but this is for charity; we’re helping people,” I said, glaring at the back of Connie’s head as she sidled up to the clipboard to log another bid. The back and forth continued until I eventually secured the basket for a price that made the charity organizers delirious. Carol O’Meara It was worth it, for within the basket was Colorado State treasure: A paper wrapped bundle of yellow University Extension potato onions, small, golden orbs waiting to be put in the ground. The perennial onions are new to me, so what was purchased at the silent auction was not just a basket, it is an adventure. Yellow potato onions, also known as multipliers, grow in clumps of onions from one planted bulb. Plant them in fall, until mid-October, and they produce three to five onions each, giving you a big crop for a small investment. Eat the larger bulbs, but save some for replanting; you’ll have a perennial supply of onions for your garden. Other multiplier onions create clusters of small bulbs at the top of their stems and are known as top setting onions, such as Egyptian or walking onions. Soil preparation is the key to success, as potato onions don’t like heavy, wet ground. Amend the planting area with plenty of compost or peat moss to keep the soil well drained. Dig the planting hole 2-to 3-inches deep, sprinkle a teaspoon of bonemeal into the hole beneath the bulb, then pop in the onions 6-inches apart. Mulch with a 3-inch layer of straw for winter. In spring, clearing away the mulch from around the onions is a must, but leave the mulch in place between rows to help conserve water. Keep the bulb from becoming elongated by scraping away a bit of soil until there is only 1 inch of soil above the bulb. Make sure the onions never dry out during the growing season, and you’ll be rewarded with sweet, delectable bulbs. Other alliums for fall planting are shallots and garlic, staples for any kitchen garden. Shallots are perennials that create clusters of bulbs around the mother bulb. Treat them like you would the potato onions, fertilizing shallots once in spring with an all-purpose fertilizer before the sprouts are 6-inches tall. Garlic thrives in Colorado, but if you want to grow your own, avoid grocery store garlic, which might be treated with a growth inhibitor. Softneck garlic (Allium sativum var sativum) has a soft, flexible stem at the top of the bulb that makes it the choice for braiding into ropes and necklaces. Hardneck garlic (Allium sativum var ophioscorodon) produces a curled, flowering stem, called a scape, that eventually turns woody. Rich with flavor, they have fewer, but larger, easy-to-peel cloves. Use hardnecks early; they don’t store as long. Plant now, while we still have four to six weeks before the ground freezes, in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Plant only the largest cloves, saving the smaller ones for eating. Push cloves root end down, one to two inches into the soil, about 6 inches apart. Carol O’Meara is a horticulture entomologist with the Colorado State University Extension office at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. Contact her by calling 303-678-6238 or emailing comeara@co.boulder.co.us. For more gardening tips, check out her blog at gardeningafterfive.wordpress.com.

All loans require income verification As you have lost your job and are now working in your own business, it won’t be easy to find a lender to overlook your job situation. If you are self-employed, lenders will want to see a two-year track history of your self-employment to get a good feel as to whether you will be able to make your monthly payments under the new loan. Bringing culture into your home Discover tasteful ways to display exotic decor

decorations from many cultures, from Indian Buddha heads to African tribal masks. Supplee urges souvenir shoppers to spend their money wisely if they want to incorporate a piece into their home design. “If people are actually going to be on vacation thinking about buying a souvenir, don’t buy a small one, because it’s going to look like clutter,” Supplee says. “Buy something substantial. Spend a lot of money on one piece as opposed to a lot of money on a whole bunch of little pieces. That will usually be more easy to incorporate into every design situation that you have.” Christine Costigan of Alabaster Design in Longmont, says it’s important that you can appreciate whatever item you’re displaying. “Put it somewhere where you can see it and enjoy it,” Costigan says. “That could be your kitchen, your living room, on your coffee table. Put it somewhere prominent in an unobtrusive way.” In addition to these tips, it is important to know the background and meaning of the item being displayed. Whether it’s a souvenir from last year’s vacation, a funky garage-sale find or an exotic gift a cousin brought back from her honeymoon, many people have a piece (or several pieces) of a different culture they want to display in their home. Though this can be intimidating, interior designer and co-owner of Longmont boutique Encore! Dena Blackburn says it’s a risk worth taking. “What we find more often than not is that people are afraid because they feel like they don’t know how to do it, so they just don’t do anything,” Blackburn says. “People shouldn’t be afraid. If they really fall in love with something, go with it. Make a statement with it.” Blackburn co-owns Encore! with her mother and fellow designer, Judi Supplee. Supplee advises paying attention to color schemes and style when trying to incorporate an exotic piece. “Stick with the same color tones,” Supplee says. “A lot of Asian and Indian art looks really good with a contemporary or modern aesthetic, whereas, with a country aesthetic, not so much.” In their experience as interior designers, Supplee and Blackburn have seen

“Buy something substantial. Spend a lot of money on one piece as opposed to a lot of money on a whole bunch of little pieces.” – Judi Supplee with her husband, Steve Collins, says there are few concerns when displaying Egyptian items, but that isn’t always the case. “I know I’ve looked at Tibetan and Buddhist things and there is a sensitivity around displaying things that are sacred and symbolic,” Collins says. “But as far as our merchandise, I haven’t come across any kind of sensitivity to displaying it.” Most people will display their exotic items respectfully by default, Collins says. “Usually people that are buying something have a connection with that ancient culture,” Collins says. “There is almost sort of a reverence around what they take home.”

Supplee says she thinks people will be naturally inclined to display their exotic items tastefully, as well as respectfully. “Typically people are going to buy what appeals to them and its all going to be cohesive anyway because they’re not going to step outside their box too much,” Supplee says. While cohesion often comes naturally, Supplee says the best rule of thumb is to consider room design before purchasing an exotic item. “I’d rather see people really spend their money wisely when they do go cultural,” Supplee says. “It’s good to buy something that they’re going to be able to display, that’s going to be an important piece in their home.”

Stinky house will foul sales prospects By Marcie Geffner bankrate.com

Homebuyers don’t want houses that stink. Sellers must identify and remediate odors that make prospective purchasers hold their noses and run for the exits. A buyer’s market is a tough challenge for sellers, says Patti Ketcham, owner of Ketcham Realty Group in Tallahassee, Fla. “If you’re selling, she says,

“your house has to look a little better, smell a little better and be priced a little better than the other houses the buyer will look at that same day. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy for sellers to identify familiar smells that might be problematic, says Neeraj Gupta, director of product research and development at ServiceMaster Clean, which does major cleanups and post-disaster restorations for commercial and

residential properties. “There is no ’odor meter,’ Gupta says. “People get used to the odor of their house and may not notice that something is not pleasant. The best way to find out whether a house smells OK is to “ask someone who doesn’t live there to come inside and give an opinion, Gupta says. The obvious “someone would be the real estate broker

$100 OFF* RESIDENTIAL PAINTING * Discount applies to bids over $1,000, dated 10/1-10/31/2011

hired to sell the home. But not all brokers will point out that a house smells bad, even if they’re willing to offer other helpful suggestions. Ketcham offers to pass along any unfiltered “brutal truth comments she hears from her colleagues who bring buyers to see the property. That way, the message gets delivered with less risk to her cordial relationship with the sellers. “I will never be the kind that will come out and tell you that your house smells like cat litter or mothballs, she says. “I would rip my tongue out first. The two most common sources of offensive odors are pets and cigarettes; neither of which, Gupta says, is easy to remediate. The first line of defense in any smelly situation is to remove the problem’s source, even if that means a beloved pet must board elsewhere for a while. “If the pet is in the house, you’re introducing new odor every day, Gupta says. Cat urine can seep into carpet fibers, carpet padding, concrete and wood floors, upholstery fabrics, and furniture cushions and pillows. “Oftentimes, he says, “you have to remove the carpet, re-

move the pad and seal the floor, and then replace the carpet and the pad. Cleaning the carpet might help. But humidity will raise the odor from the padding or floor beneath. Cigarette smoke can cling to furnishings, drapes and other window coverings and work its way inside walls. Some topically applied solutions can reduce the stench, but an ozone generator, hydroxyl generator or air scrubber should be more effective, Gupta says. These approaches are “very effective in absorbing odors, he says, though there is no guarantee that an odor can be eliminated completely. One more tip: If someone suffers a long illness or dies in a home, a good airing may be adequate to remove odors. In the case of a violent death, however, professionals who handle what’s known as “trauma cleanup should be called. The cost might range from a few hundred dollars to at least $1,000, depending on the type of remediation and the square footage. “If you have that type of situation, Gupta says, “it’s probably best to call a professional. It may be traumatic for you to do it yourself.
