Taylor Moving Thanks to its reputation for trustworthiness, superior service, and satisfied customers, Taylor Moving is Boulder County's only moving company voted one of the Best in the last six years in the Daily Camera Boulder Gold Awards, Best of Boulder from the Boulder Weekly Awards and The Times-Call reader’s choice awards Husband and wife Glen and Leah Taylor started Taylor Moving in 1996. The company specializes in moves within Boulder County, but is big enough to handle anything within the state whether it’s commercial or residential. It has prospered and grown these 15 years. Giving to the Community Building a successful business allows the Taylors to give back to the community. They’ve donated moves for such local nonprofits as The Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, Boulder Valley Humane Society and Habitat for Humanity. Besides helping local organizations with in-kind and other donations, Leah Taylor notes, “We make sure we donate 5 percent of our yearly profit to local charities to give back to the people that keep us in business in these hard economic times.” The Inn Between of Longmont is a recipient of the Taylor’s generosity. Executive Director Donna Lovato says: “We have an annual fundraiser, The Sweet Taste. For the second year the Taylors donated money and were one of the event’s sponsors. They let us use their truck to transport more than 100 silent-auction items, and they even sent a staff person to drive the truck. They gave as a sponsor, too.” The Inn Between of Longmont provides transitional housing to individuals and families for up to two years, until they are ready to transition back into the community. “New this year, if we have a resident who has found housing, Taylor offered us the van for the move,” Lovato

says. (The Inn Between of Longmont, 250 Kimbark Street, Longmont, 303.684.0810, www.theinnbetween.org) Janine D’Anniballe, Ph.D, director of Access, Emergency and Community Services at Mental Health Partners, who works with Moving To End Sexual Assault (MESA), says of the Taylors: “They’re so consistent and reliable in their support of us. They are committed to the cause and are so lovely to work with. They come through for us.” For MESA’S annual Canine Classic, its biggest fundraising event, the Taylors donated a truck and a driver to pick up 60 gallons of water in Lafayette; then MESA used the truck to move everything – tables, tents and more – between their office and the event, saving MESA time and money. And the Taylor’s always bring a few of their five rescued dogs to the race each year as well” MESA assists sexual assault survivors and their loved ones and helps more than 1,000 individuals annually through its Rape Crisis and Information Hotline. (MESA, 1333 Iris Avenue, Boulder, 303.443.0400, Rape Crisis and Information Hotline 303.443.7300, www.movingtoendsexualassault.org) Making Moving Greener You've probably seen Taylor's distinctive green moving vans around Boulder and surrounding counties. "We're consciously green," says Glen Taylor. "We take back used boxes from anyone - we just ask them

to be flattened out and brought to our office. We sort through them, recycle the bad ones and then we organize the good ones by size and offer them at a reduced rate to some customers or charities that need the extra help to re-use. Otherwise, the boxes would likely all be thrown out." Boxes that are no longer usable go to EcoCycle in Boulder, along with plastic bottles and metal cans that Taylor recycles. Fuel economy is important, too. In local moves, Taylor makes a conscious effort to pick up an entire load in one trip, instead of going back and forth. Relying on the Taylors Taylor Moving recently acquired a 15,000-square-foot, climate-controlled, ADT-secured storage facility. “We can now house goods for a lot more families,” Glen Taylor says. Taylor Moving is based at 4949 N. Broadway in Boulder. For more information or a free estimate on your next move, call Taylor Moving at 303.443.5885, or e-mail the Taylors at bouldermovers@aol.com. Longmont Community Foundation Improving life in the St. Vrain Valley through philanthropy and charitable leadership in order to strengthen the community is the mission set forth by the Longmont Community Foundation. “We’re here for the community – for everybody – to improve the community,” says Eric Hozempa, executive director. As a nonprofit organization created by and for the people of Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley, the idea of the Longmont Community Foundation fist came about in 1988, but wasn’t formalized until 1994. The organization is managed by a paid professional staff and governed by a volunteer board of directors. The foundation offers several ways for community members to get involved and to help create their own charitable story. “Every charitable gift has a story,” Hozempa says. Charitable gifts within the Longmont community can come in many forms, one such gift that came through the foundation last year was a $10,000 grant given to the Ed & Ruth Lehman YMCA in support of the community farm they hoped to start. The $10,000 donation was a part of the $300,000 the Longmont community foundation grants out each year to local nonprofits. Community members can also get involved through Donor-Advised Funds, The Community Endowment Fund or through

Longmont Community Foundation 303-678-6555 www.longmontfoundation.org

offering to help improve the nonprofit community through volunteering. Donor-Advised Funds are established by families and/or individuals who wish to tackle a specific issue or cause in the community. Through a donor-advised fund a family and/or individual can grant funds to many nonprofit organizations, schools or places of worship. Contributing to the Community Endow-

ment Fund is an option for donors who want the Longmont Community Foundation to utilize its knowledge of the community to grant funds to the most pressing needs in the community. The Community Endowment is not designated to a particular agency, but rather for four established area of interest. These interests include: Arts and Culture, Civic and Education, and Health and Human Services.

Ascension Scattering

Aerial Tribute Choosing the best way to pay tribute to a loved one after death is an important decision. As more families choose cremation, they are frequently undecided on what to do with the ashes. Ascension Scattering is offered by Aerial Tribute in cooperation with Greenwood & Myers Funeral Services. It is a an economical and eco-friendly alternative to traditional scattering and burial. Ascension Scattering is unlike conventional scattering, because it releases some or all of your loved one’s cremated remains (also known as “cremains” or “ashes”) into a naturally occurring column of rising air over the Rocky Mountains, known as a thermal. A portion of the cremated remains ascends to the upper atmosphere where they can remain indefinitely. This results in a unique and inspirational return to nature and the sky.

Aerial Tribute 303-652-4151 www.AerialTribute.com

This type of memorial is special, because no matter where families live they can always look heavenward and be reminded of their loved one. Ascension Scattering is a growing tradition that addresses memorial needs of families everywhere.

Shop Kids Resale

When Megan Johnson started a store that caters to parents and kids, it seemed only natural. As a mom of three boys, with a fourth child on the way, Johnson understands how quickly kids outgrow clothing, toys and other must-have accessories, such as high chairs and strollers. In order to give the community she lived in what it wanted – year-round savings on kid items – Johnson opened Shop Kids Resale and Consignment a year-and-a-half ago with the goal of not only providing savings, but a shopping experience like no other. Designed more as a boutique than a thrift store, Johnson prides herself on the layout of the store because it helps busy parents find what they need, while offering a safe place for their kids to play. “Our biggest compliment is that it is open and you can see everything,” she says. “There is no digging.” Johnson also guarantees that “if it’s not quality, it’s not in the store,” on all items she has for sale. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for,

Bring in your used gear and we’ll pay you on the spot. REUSE. RECYCLE. REPLAY

Chris and John Martin opened Play It Again Sports in Longmont five years ago after shopping for many years at the Play It Again Sports stores in Boulder and Fort Collins. The franchise’s business model, which allows customers to trade in their used gear for new or recycled merchandise, appealed to the Martins who felt Longmont needed this option in the sporting goods market. While high-quality value-priced used merchandise is Play It Again’s hallmark, the store also sells current year, new merchandise from vendors like Easton, Wilson, Bauer, Horizon and Schwinn Fitness. Play It Again Sports is America’s largest retailer of hockey gear, but the stores also cater to athletes participating in baseball, golf, lacrosse, snow sports, football, disc golf and other team sports. The stores also carry everything needed for personal fitness such as ellipticals, treadmills, stationary bikes, weights, benches and more.

Grease Monkey Committed to being the premier preventiveautomotive maintenance provider, Grease Monkey sets itself apart by offering superior customer service that keeps people returning. Locally owned and trusted for more than 24 years, Grease Monkey was started in 1987 when Ron Morrow and two business partners bought their first store in Longmont to build upon a concept they felt was successful to offer automotive maintenance in a timely and cost-effective manner. That first store was only the start of a growing business that now encompasses 16 stores from Greeley to Parker. At every store, customers can expect only the best with trained professionals, many of which have put in years of service for Grease Monkey, who provide routine automotive maintenance, oil changes, tire rotations, fluid and transmission changes, and more. Specialty services include checking the air conditioning system, radiator flushes, serpentine belt changes and nitrogenfilled tires. Grease Monkey has an extensive database that allows their professionals to research each vehicle, including the specific requirements or suggestions defined by the manufacturer. “Cars are getting more complicated for the consumer,” says Ron Morrow Sr. “We ’re committed to being the leader in preventative maintenance.” Alongside Morrow in managing the business is his son, Ron Morrow Jr., who joined the business seven years ago. Morrow Jr. follows suit in his father’s footsteps in providing a quality service through superior customer service and professional attention. In addition to offering superior services, Grease Monkey also prides itself in being thoroughly involved with communities by supporting a number of charities, nonprofit organizations, local high schools and more. “We participate in many different fundraisers, whether it’s a girl’s basketball team, boy’s baseball team or just the school themselves. We get involved as much as we can because it’s good for the community,” Morrow says.

Infant Aquatics at Swim Float Swim The following letter was written by a parent who enrolled her three children in Infant Aquatics at Swim Float Swim!

Dear Judy, We live in Lafayette and our property is quite large and beautifully landscaped with a gorgeous water feature the kids love to splash around in during the summer. The pond, surrounded by rocks, drops to a depth of 4.5 feet. May 18th was a warm, sunny day. I was home with my two young daughters doing yard work. Saxon, my 16-month-old, had just completed her fifth week of lessons with Cynthia, but had yet to practice swimming in clothes. She and Stori, my 4-yearold, were playing on a large trampoline located next to the pond, while I was gardening. My back was turned pulling weeds in an adjacent garden when I heard Stori call for me. She said “mommy, mommy, Saxon needs you” I turned around to see Stori, standing by the water, but Saxon was nowhere in sight. My mouth went dry, and my heart sank as I envisioned Saxon facedown at the bottom of the pond. I remember running about eight “Incredible Hulk” steps with no feeling in my legs. The pond came into view, and there was Saxon, not submerged on the bottom, but floating on her back on the surface of the water. She

was wearing overalls with a long sleeve shirt underneath. Her breathing was relaxed, considering the water temperature was 58 degrees. I felt calm as I made my way to where she was floating. I was so relieved; I cheered her as I laid down at the edge of the water. I continued to tell her what a great swimmer she was as I gently placed my hands under her head, re-enforcing her confidence in the floating technique she had been learning during her swim lessons. I was surprisingly very composed, and helped her float over to the side and then encouraged her to flip over and grab the edge, where I grasped her little hands and pulled her wet body out. During the entire episode, she never cried, never even made a peep. I let her run around the sunny yard in her wet clothes and diaper for a few minutes while I regained the strength in my legs to actually take her inside to get fresh clothes and digest what had just happened.

According to Stori, “Saxon fell in the water face first and rolled over to float.” It was pretty amazing! Water safety has always been one of my greatest priorities, and all three of my kids have taken lessons at Infant Aquatics. I have always felt that educating children to be safe and respectful around water is paramount, because you never know when something like this might happen. Thank you over and over again Infant Aquatics Team! Sincerely, Carey Pardee

Leopard geckos are the fastest growing pet in the world today in popularity due to their beauty, very tame and friendly personalities, cleanliness and lack of pet odors, ease of care, and low cost. “They are really like little dogs in a lizard's body,” says Ray Roehner, who owns the operation along with his wife Carol. “The gecko bonds to their owner in a very special way, and they will sit on your lap and watch TV with you, hang out on your shoulder, or even go for a ride in the car, all very much like a dog! Some of our young customers become future veterinarians very soon after getting a gecko, because they become so interested in the biological aspects of them that they start to research into geckos, give presentations at school, and write papers and even books about them.”

“We love the educational aspect of what we do. It's our way to further the gecko hobby, educate our customers, and have a lot of fun along the way,” says Ray. “We keep the prices of our equipment, supplies, and geckos affordable for our customers. Seeing the joy in our customers’ eyes when they stop by the store and bring in their geckos to show us them as they grow is what makes it all worthwhile for us. That's really what Designer Geckos is all about.”

See why these wonderful geckos are the fastest growing pet in popularity in the world today.......

Stonum Automotive Since 2004, Stonum Automotive has provided Longmont-area auto owners with comprehensive auto repair services, affordable prices and superior customer service to get people back in their automobile in no time. Owning his own shop was always a dream for John Stonum, who grew up around cars with the influence from family. His father was retired from General Motors and his step-father built streetrods, each providing influence in Stonum’s passion for the industry. Stonum started working in parts as a young man before moving into the service aspect of the business and working alongside many great employees throughout the years. When it came time to open his own shop, Stonum turned to those former workers and asked them to join his team. “We offer great employees and exceptional technicians who stay abreast to new technologies through continuing training and education,” Stonum says. Stonum Automotive provides service on all makes and models, including diesel engines and European autos, and also offers tires and alignment options, as well as windshield replacement. Top-of-the-line tools and equipment allow them to do a great quality repair the first time. Each technician is also equipped with a computer right at his toolbox to easily access repair information, labor times and parts, which helps in getting automobiles fixed and back in the hands of the customers. “Our goal is to try and get every service John Stonum, owner of Stonum Automotive. done in one day,” he says. “We truly are a

stewards of their charitable gifts. John Flanders, who was the Foundation’s first, is also the current Chairman of the Board: “People in our area are very giving. Fundraising is not always about immediate gifts. It’s very much about cultivating and planting seeds that take time to grow and flourish.” The Hope Cancer Care Center opened in 1996 was built almost exclusively from donor gifts and received over $1.6 million; the patient tower opened in 2000 and was also strongly supported by our donor community which helped raise $2.5 million; the Emergency Department opened in 2008 and received over

When it comes to your pets,

Four Paws & Co. Whether it’s food for your animal, training classes, grooming or just simply advice the experienced staff at Four Paws & Co. are always willing to help out. Owner Carrie Adams opened the store geared toward animals in April of 2003. The Longmont native says it was an easy move for her, because of her love for animals. The store offers a wide-selection of natural foods for dogs and cats, and wild bird food, but the inverntory doesn’t stop there. Customers will also find toys, beds, treats and more in the pet store. The staff at Four Paws can help customers find any food for any dietary issue. If you are a regular customer, they will probably even have the food picked out for you before you walk through the door. “We have a personal relationship with our customers and their pets, they’re like family,” Adams says. “It’s the personal touch that really

makes a difference.” Behind the retail center of Four Paws, customers will find the self-service dog wash. The dog wash includes shampoo, conditioner, detangler spray, a brush and towels. And the best part is – the mess can be left behind. If grooming is needed, Four Paws has an onsite groomer that customers can book appointments with. The grooming environment is cage free and includes only one animal at a time. Four Paws also offers agility, obedience, puppy kindergarten, nose work and conformation classes in its training center.

Huntington Learning Center Can tutoring help your child? A growing body of research suggests that it may – and that it may not. The outcome depends largely on the process; on the use of practices that research has shown to be effective. If these “best practices” are followed, terrific strides are very likely possible. What are best tutoring practices? While not all researchers agree on every aspect, a consensus is growing around several characteristics. They include: • Certified Teachers/Program. Teacher education, prior experience, and specialized training do make a difference. Look for certified teachers working within certified programs. • Standardized Diagnostics. The only effective way to build a program is to use a diagnostic template that assesses skills against national data and measures. • Individually Prescribed Programs. There is little debate here: individualized programs tailored to a student’s unique needs work best

Huntington Learning Center 815 E. 17th St., Suite C, Longmont 303-597-0294 www.longmont.huntingtonlearning.com

and fastest. Period. • Intrinsic Motivational Techniques. While not all agree on this, most researchers find that programs encouraging internal, “intrinsic” motivation (rather than relying on external rewards or trinkets) achieve more sustainable results. • A Practice of Engaging Schools. Tutoring, when used, should be one tool for building skills, confidence and motivation – but only one. Tutoring should support and work with the student’s teachers and school in a systematic alliance. Tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. When you look at the many options available, talk to the organizations and ask questions to ensure that the help you get is effective.

“Not only did I get into the college of my dreams, I got a scholarship and freshman credits... thanks, Huntington!” Brandon H.

Longmont Vacuum Being the first vacuum store in Longmont, Longmont Vacuum is more than just a store where customers can buy vacuum cleaners and get them serviced. It’s a place with personality, and its character extends from the owners, Harry and Vivian Enfinger. “I’d as soon be here as where I’m at,” Harry is fond of saying, and where he’s at, more often than not, is Longmont Vacuum, the downtown establishment he’s owned and operated for 43 years. With the store’s longevity, it has seen many other stores come and go, but the Southern gentleman Harry stays. Anyone who has visited Longmont Vacuum, is always welcomed by a familiar face and honest service that today is often hard to find. Harry, who has been working in the vacuum business since 1956 when he started work at Kirby of Denver, knows his vacuums and stands by his word. The knowledge he offers to customers is unmatched and is something that keeps customers coming back and spreading the word to friends and family. Harry and those at Longmont Vacuum only sell dependability, but will repair and service any vacuum brought in. Currently, customers can find brands such as Royal, Sanitaire, Eureka,

In the midst of the economic downturn in 2008, Colorado natives Olivia and Brian Neill started Happy Hounds Dog Care Center in Longmont. While Brian worked on the East Coast to help make ends meet for the first 18 months, Olivia got the business on the ground, slowly building clientele and staying afloat. But with a hands-on approach and an emphasis on giving dogs full attention and superior care, the Neills grew to where they are now – with seven employees and more than 700 customers in their database. “We’re very different than a lot of other dog care facilities, because we’re extremely handson,” Olivia says. “We give a lot of attention to the dogs.” At Happy Hounds, staff and

ownership work with dogs and reinforce anything owners are working on with their dogs. Dogs with minor issues aren’t turned away, but instead are given extra attention and training. “We’re not looking for perfect dogs,” Brian says. “We can work with them. The dogs turn around pretty quickly. “Tired dogs is our best advertising,” he says – referring to Happy Hounds’ active style of care and their emphasis on letting dogs play. The care center also offers training: Olivia is head trainer and all of her classes utilize positive reinforcement techniques. Happy Hounds is committed to giving your dog the absolute
