A Ghoulish Guide Make your Halloween party extra spooky
Article Resource Association
Halloween is the second most decorated holiday, so this weekend you’ll see ghouls and goblins, witches and vampires, pumpkins and candy corn adornments on many homes celebrating trick-or-treating season. This year, instead of buying your decorations, why not brew a little imagination? Just stir in a few items you already have around the house and a couple of cans of spray paint to create bewitching, inexpensive pieces for your home and yard. Here are three project ideas to inspire and help you easily put some extra spookiness in your Halloween trick-or-treating.
various Halloween decorations; hot or super glue; packing tape; newspaper; large nails or ground stakes; and scissors.
Ghoulish Gravestones Turn a couple of old boxes into a chilling graveyard to keep the goblins and vampires at bay. What you’ll need: Black granite textured “stone” spray paint, such as Krylon’s Make It Stone; spray adhesive; glow-in-the-dark paint; boxes (note: old shipping boxes work well); foam or wood letters;
How to do it: Set up a spray paint area in a well-ventilated area by covering a table with newspaper. Assemble a box and tape over folded seams leaving one end open, as that will serve as the bottom of your gravestone. Cut a name plaque to fit the box from the cardboard of another and affix with spray adhesive. Glue letters

onto the plaque. Embellish the top of your gravestone with glued-on Halloween decorations, like a bat or skull. Paint the entire gravestone with two to three coats of “stone” spray paint, letting it dry between coats. Once it’s dry, highlight areas with glow-in-the-dark paint. Place a stake in the ground, prop up your box and enjoy scaring the neighbors with your ghoulishly gorgeous graveyard.
workspace with newspaper. Spray several light coats of white frosted glass paint on the lip of each votive and let dry. Next, add several light coats of white paint to the outside bottom of votives, blending the white seamlessly with the frosted glass. Let dry completely. Spray the entire exterior with glow-in-the dark paint, which will allow your votives to shine even when not lit. Finally, draw facial features with a black paint pen.
Ghostly Globes Add a spooky twist to your outside walkway on All Hallow’s Eve – without having to carve several messy pumpkins – by creating glowing ghostly globes. What you’ll need: Round glass votives; newspaper; one can each of white frosted glass, white and glow-in-the-dark spray paint, such as Krylon Glowz; and a black craft pen. How to do it: Cover your
Spooky Party Servers Embellish your Halloween party buffet by transforming ordinary terra cotta pots into spooky party servers. What you’ll need: White primer; pumpkin orange, gloss white and gold glitter spray paint; black webbing spray from Krylon; brush-on black paint; repositionable adhesive; assorted terra cotta pots and saucers; metal or enamel bowl; glue; paper; pencil; scissors;

and a small paint brush. How to do it: Wash the pots and saucers. Allow to dry. Spray all the terra cotta with white primer. Let dry and spray with gloss white. Once dry, turn pots upside down and glue the bottom of a saucer to the bottom of each pot. Draw ghosts, tombstones and other scary characters on paper. Cut the shapes out and spray one side with repositionable adhesive. Position the paper shapes randomly on the pots. Spray the outside of the bowl and terra cotta pieces with pumpkin orange paint. Once dry, spray all the pieces with black webbing spray, then lightly with gold glitter spray. When all the paint is dry, remove paper templates and add details, such as features on the ghosts and words on the tombstones, with black paint. Be sure to not place unwrapped food on any painted surface.

Several major lenders recently suspended foreclosures, as they review irregularities in legal paperwork. These suspensions could have a significant impact on today’s homebuyers and sellers. The extent of disruption will depend largely on how long banks hold up foreclosures in states that require a judicial foreclosure process. During these suspensions, banks will review affidavits that have been challenged. If the problems are resolved quickly, the impact may be minor, according to Rick Sharga, senior vice president at RealtyTrac, a national foreclosure-tracking service in Irvine, Calif. “We should see a slowdown in new foreclosures and foreclosure processing over the next two to three months, followed by an accelerated rate of foreclosure activity in the first quarter of 2011, and then we’ll be more or less back to normal,” he says. The risk, however, is that foreclosure delays could drag into next year or be expanded to more states – as already has begun to happen. “The concern is the potential implications for the overall housing market and economy,” Sharga says. “If you freeze the sale of homes that have been repossessed and are in foreclosure, you will wipe out 30 percent of all home sales. That’s like finding a patient who’s in intensive care and unplugging some of the tubes.” The foreclosure delays may impact sellers in several ways. Homeowners in foreclosure who hope to sell may get a “temporary break” before the process moves forward, according to Nick Libert, broker/owner of Exit Strategy Realty in Chicago. That would allow them to live in their home awhile longer and potentially close a short sale. Or, they could negotiate a loan modification to avoid foreclosure.
Home sellers who aren’t in foreclosure also may benefit as banks take foreclosed homes off the market. The diminished supply could put upward pressure on prices. “As long as buyers stay in the market and the inventory gets reduced, we’ll see prices stop any slides and potentially go up a bit,” Libert says. Sellers may need to act quickly if they want to take advantage of that window, says Lydia Player, a real estate agent at Virginia Cook, Realtors, in Dallas. “It’s positive short-term news for sellers because they won’t be competing against the inventory of distressed properties,” she says. “But (their home) could be listed for one, two or three months, and at that point, the market could be flooded.” Potential homebuyers who previously considered shopping for foreclosures may be scared off by the recent negative news reports. But Libert says there’s no reason for buyers to delay their plans as long as they can get a clear title to the property and title insurance. However, some buyers remain worried. Player says buyers in Texas are concerned about recent developments, even though the state doesn’t require foreclosures to go through a judicial process. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has demanded certain lenders forestall all foreclosures in the state, though it’s unclear how many will cooperate. Buyers are looking for foreclosure properties, Player says, because they perceive these homes to be “a good deal.” But now, she fears, the prospect of fewer bankowned homes being for sale could prompt them to delay their homebuying plans. “Buyers have been sitting on the sidelines for several months, waiting to see what’s going (to) happen, and this only gives them more of a reason to sit on the sidelines,” she says. The bottom line is that affected housing markets are now in a state of heightened uncertainty that presents both risks and opportunities.

If you freeze the sale of homes that have been repossessed and are in foreclosure, you will wipe out 30 percent of all home sales. Throw a sinister Halloween party By Mary Carol Garrity Scripps Howard News Service
44-155508
I picked a murder mystery party theme for my fall open house this year. Why not join in the fun and throw a sensationally sinister Halloween dinner party of your own? Line your walkway and flank your door with lanterns filled with flickering batteryoperated candles. Surround the lanterns with clusters of leering jack-o-lanterns or ghoulish green pumpkins, then snake a few ribbons of honeysuckle vine around the whole presentation to make it look a bit wilder. Hang a piece of creepy artwork on your door, like a photocopy of a cadaver from an old anatomy textbook or an old clock face ominously stuck at midnight. For my fall open house this year, I hung a large round mirror from my door knocker. I secured some twisting, turning dead sticks behind the mirror so they branched out around it. Next, I tucked in some creepy faux black flowers that added just a bit of shimmer and sheen. I had to break up the spooky scene with a bit of levity, so I added in a kooky black
bird wearing a witch’s hat. I love to serve drinks and appetizers in my foyer so guests have a chance to congregate before being ushered into the dining room. To turn your entry into a spooky reception area, set up a side table or butler’s cart with crystal decanters holding spirits or a witches’ brew in an elegant punch bowl. Fill tarnished silver trays with dark and sinister-looking appetizers, such as plumbs, blackberries, black grapes and figs. If you want to get really icky, put fake vermin like rubber bugs, snakes or a rat around the serving platter. Whether or not you start your party in your foyer, make sure this all-important space reflects the spooky mood you created at your front door. For instance, work a lacy, premade spider web into the arms of your chandelier, then suspend little wire spiders from fishing string. Create a macabre display on an entry table: Prop a (fake!) skull atop a cake plate covered with a glass cloche, then elevate the stand on a stack of classic tales of horror, like “Frankenstein.” I created a zany centerpiece on the table on my porch. For years, I’ve been on the look for

African wood is worth thousands of dollars By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service
Dear Helaine and Joe: I was a Realtor for many years. Several months ago, a colleague called and told me of a complete house sale of (East) Indian items. I purchased a couple of items, including a piece that looks like a door, but nowhere on its frame does it show signs of ever having a doorknob. I was told it is an antique. Is it worth anything? – P. P.
Discarded mannequin parts painted gray make the perfect prop for a Halloween centerpiece. Here, they are placed into an urn and surrounded with moss to add a spooky air for a party. (SHNS/Courtesy Nell Hill’s)
old mannequins I could use for Halloween party props, and I finally snared some. So guess what is the focal point of the sinister centerpiece? Dismembered mannequin arms and legs. Thanks to their sleek gray finish, the arms and legs sticking out of the urn at my table’s center give the “bouquet” a whimsical – not grotesque – look. The mannequins are mixed in with
twisty, turning branches, Spanish moss and glittered faux black flowers. Meanwhile, bring out the silver, crystal and china and set the most opulent table you can imagine. You simply can’t have a Halloween dinner party without giving out goodies. Fill small fabric pouches from a craft store with wire spiders that guests can use to decorate their own homes.
Dear P. P.: This large carved panel or “door” is unquestionably one of the most curious things we have been asked about in some time. It’s outside our area of expertise, but we did do some research and hope that sharing it with you will help. We do not believe this object is East Indian in origin. Carvings done on the great Indian subcontinent have a distinctive look that this panel does not have. For Indian woodcarvings, we would expect to see Hindu gods, elephants, dancers, temple architecture, floral tracery and maybe even a sacred cow. Instead, it is our opinion that the carving is North African and probably made for the tourist trade sometime in the early to mid 20th century. The panel/door appears to be at least 7 feet tall. It appears to be made of a highquality tropical wood that, unfortunately, cannot be identified accurately from a photograph. As for the insurance replacement value, even modern African carvings of this size are expensive. This extraordinary panel should be valued in the $2,500 to $3,500 range at the very least.

Interior fixes to sell a home fast Metro Services
Despite low interest rates and declining sale prices, there is still a lot of home inventory available. That means homeowners thinking about selling have to do whatever they can to set their homes apart. Real estate experts call it “staging,” or presenting the home in the best light so that potential buyers can envision themselves moving right in. Just a few changes here and there can position a home to sell faster. 1. The nose knows. A house can be perfect inside and out, but if it smells bad, buyers will likely be put off. 2. Clear out. Make sure the interior looks as spacious as possible. This could mean taking out furniture and temporarily putting it in storage. Be sure countertops in bathrooms and kitchens are free of clutter. 3. Cater to the lazy person. Potential buyers generally want to move in and simply unpack. They don’t want to make major repairs. Therefore, homeowners should do whatever repairs are possible, within reason. 4. Do a deep cleaning. Whether a cleaning service is hired or the homeowner does it himself, tackling necessary cleaning projects could make the home shine. 5. Add a fresh coat of paint. If walls are bright colors or eclectic, it could pay to paint rooms in more neutral shades to appeal to the masses. 6. Keep the home updated. While one doesn’t have to follow every trend, ensuring the home is ageless can make for a better sell.
Ornamental grasses shine in the fall By Joe Lamp’l

They catch the sunlight, sway and rustle in the breeze. In fall, ornamental grasses are in their glory as they turn shades of gold, bronze and ruby. You may pass the same way every day, suddenly notice a stand of reddish or golden grasses. Consider adding a few of these underappreciated plants to your yard. They’re easy to grow, attractive, versatile and beneficial to wildlife. Ornamental grasses offer low maintenance, longevity and resistance to many pests and diseases. These vigorous plants establish themselves quickly in a wide range of soil types. In addition, most ornamental grasses are deer-resistant. Deer may nibble on the grasses, but they rarely damage these tough plants. Just because these are

grasses, don’t think you have to mow them regularly. In fact, you only need to trim them within a few inches of the ground annually, just before they awaken from winter dormancy in early spring. Trim off the previous year’s growth and put it right into your compost pile. For most people, the best reason to grow ornamental grasses is their beauty. They provide interest throughout the seasons and look great even in winter snow. With
sizes ranging from dwarf to towering, you’re sure to find a variety to suit your needs. Native grasses provide a habitat for birds and other wildlife. Birds thrive on the seeds that grasses provide. I’ve used ornamental grasses to add texture, color and to attract wildlife for decades. They never fail to amaze me. Choosing your next kitchen floor Vinyl is a durable flooring material that is typically used in high-traffic areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms. There are different applications and styles of vinyl products, and homeowners can pick the type that works best for their room and design sense. The term, linoleum is now used to describe an array of sheet flooring products. In the past, however, true linoleum was made from linseed oil, derived from the flax plant. Products sold as linoleum are generally large sheets of flooring that are custom-cut around appliances and the floor plan of the room. Vinyl tile are individual tiles printed with a pattern. The tiles are individually glued down to the subfloor and cut as necessary for proper fit. While this product is easier to install than an entire sheet of linoleum, seams may eventually loosen due to moisture. While the tiles are generally waterproof, the adhesive on the tiles are not. The vinyl tiles may come with a peel-and-stick installation method. A newer product is vinyl sheet flooring. This product is sold in larger sheets, but not as large as linoleum. Depending on the backing on the vinyl sheet, the flooring may have to be glued to the subfloor. – Metro Services
