CANDICE TELLS ALL
Playing with Contrast Candice Olson HGTV
One of the best things about living in a big, dynamic city is the amazing architectural diversity. In one short block it’s not unusual to see 200-year-old Georgian houses sitting beside contemporary glass-and-steel masterpieces: old and new contrasting against one another. Contrast is essential to good design, and it is just as striking indoors as it is outdoors. It’s also the principle I chose to transform a cold basement into a modern space for my clients, Sandra and Bob. The young couple have a lovely 1970s-style home, but their basement was stuck in a time warp, dating back to the year ’’ugly.’’ I generally dig retro, but the large room was just passe, complete with a popcorn stucco ceiling, an old wooden bar and a drafty fireplace. Sandra and Bob wanted a contemporary room with clean lines, but didn’t want it to feel sterile. So I assembled my crew and geared up to give them the ultimate modern — and warm — basement space. Before I could start designing, there was a lot of stucco to get rid of, walls to paint in a light fawn and beautiful dark gray broadloom to install. Dark shades on the floor serve to really make light walls seem brighter, in much the same way that a nice tan can make your teeth appear whiter. The couple wanted the room to work as the ultimate entertainment space, so I mapped out two main zones: a lounge/media area and a bar/games area. In the lounge area, the fireplace

became my focal point. My contractor did some creative construction, and built out in front of the existing fireplace, concealing everything underneath. I then installed a super-streamlined gas insert, clad it in gray and white stone tiles from floor to ceiling and flanked it with custom cabinetry.
I then fashioned a sitting area with a bisectional sofa in a warm sandy color and a cool mirrored coffee table. I decided to use pre-antiqued wood flooring planks on the wall behind the sofa. I then added two amazing polished chrome sconces for an additional Continued on 3

Continued from 2 touch of contrast. Across from the sectional, I put in two unconventional modern wicker chairs and hung a stunning chrome-and-crystal chandelier between them for drama. The great thing about contrast is that it doesn’t have to be limited to colors and patterns. One of the most important types of contrast in modern design is the juxtaposition of different materials. Mixing natural materials like wood and stone with manmade elements like steel and glass helps to create a space that is modern, but still has warmth. Against the wall opposite to the fireplace, I put in a big mirror that is flanked with white bookcases to which I added silver grass cloth wallpaper detailing. On one side of this space I created a modern bar/games area by ripping out the room’s old wooden bar and replacing it with a long, plastic laminate counter in light gray, and adding two stainless-steel and blackleather-upholstered barstools. Across from the bar, I put in a gorgeous round games table

sporting a rustic wood top with a contrasting chrome base. French chairs upholstered in black linen, a wood side table, a metal cabinet and a modern pendant light finished the look and voila! — instant modernity. With a few more final accents, the room was ready. By contrasting styles, colors and materials I created a fabulous entertainment room for Sandra and Bob that is contemporary and warm.
