Pride in a name is one thing the technicians, staff and owners Welzig Heating and Air know all about. They have earned the right to that pride through top-level knowledge, quality service and above all — trust. Kim Winters, manager and sister of the owner Jimmy Welzig explains why, “Our employees continue to train and achieve certification to assure that they are able to deliver superior service, quality installation and expert sales advice to each and every customer.” She points out that while everyone can make a mistake, at Welzig, they deal with them in a manner that treats customers fairly and leaves them confident that they have received professional service. To go above and beyond Kim says, “We have an on-site fully functional fabrication shop that allows us to customize each home to achieve the best heating and cooling possible.”

Dr. Scott Clark — Longmont Clinic

1925 W. Mountain View Ave., Longmont, (720) 494-3118, longmontclinic.com

Let’s face it — sometimes patients who visit a dermatologist are dealing with issues that can be uncomfortable. Dr. Scott Clark is known for greeting his patients with a secret weapon—humor. “He is a great listener and communicator, plus he has a wacky, wonderful sense of humor,” says Melody Mills, Director of Marketing at the Longmont Clinic, where Dr. Clark practices. “All of which makes him a master at putting his patients at ease.” As part of the Longmont community for 30 years, Dr. Clark genuinely cares for the people who live here. Those qualities, and Dr. Clark’s expertise in the field of skin care, make for a great doctor.

What’s more, its dentists and support staff keep up with the latest dental innovations by taking classes each year. But what makes Smile Designers so popular is the ethic shared by its entire team. “We treat people like we’d like to be treated,” says Smile Designers founder, Dr. Tom Drake. It’s as simple as that.

In addition to collision repair, they also do a mean custom paint job. Happy Hounds Dog Care Center isn’t a one-sizefits-all kind of place. Coowner, Olivia Neills emphasizes that some dogs need individual time and attention and at Happy Hounds, they get it. “Our staff understands that customers should feel like we really know their dogs,” she says. That allows them to work with behavioral issues rather than immediately turning them away. They’ll even give custom-

ers ways to work with their pup at home. Unique offerings include on-site supervision for overnight stays, hourly day care, and open drop off hours. “Our drop off hours are designed for our customers,” Olivia says. 10675 Upper Ridge Rd., Longmont, (720) 480-0070, corriekraft.com

Once again, Corrie Kraft is picture perfect. Humbled and honored by another win, Kraft attributes the accolades to her special style of photography coupled with rich relationships. Last year her work was featured in Steamboat and Vail wedding publications along with Bride magazine’s online edition. In addition to weddings, Kraft is also interested in shooting more birth photography. While her work requires travel, Longmont is always close to her heart. “There are so many beautiful locations to shoot, especially with our great mountain views,” she says. “As much as I love those destination weddings, there is nothing quite like home.”

At Steve’s Plumbing, it’s a family affair. Moskal’s wife, Sue, does supply runs on her days off from nursing; his daughter helps fielding calls; and his son works with Moskal on the job. “Longmont has supported Steve from the very beginning, just because of the person he is,” says Sue Moskal. “We don’t want to be boastful. In real estate, knowing the community is crucial. So it’s no surprise Josh Hunter, born and raised in Longmont, wins again in this category. “I absolutely love Longmont. It’s my home. It’s where I grew up and now where my children grow up,” says Hunter, who has served as the Director for the Longmont Association of Realtors for the past three years. “What I love about doing business here is that the people seem to share a common love for the area. Longmont’s real estate market is so diverse, but regardless of where people want to live in our town, they usually have a reason or a passion about why.”

“What makes Hover Manor a special place to live? That’s easy. It’s the people,” says CEO Lisa Czolowski. “Both the residents and staff have created a community of mutual respect and support.” Seventy of the manor’s 124 residents volunteer each week to help staff with various tasks. In turn, Czolowski explains, the staff never makes decisions about things that would affect Hover Manor residents without first eliciting opinions from the people who live there. “It is our belief that living in a senior community should offer opportunities for new friendships and adventures, and it is our goal to make that happen every day,” Czolowski says.

Mike O’Shays Restaurant & Ale House 512 Main St., Longmont, (303) 772-0252, mikeoshays.com

Sometimes it’s good when history repeats itself. That’s the case for owner Mike Shea, who says it’s truly an honor to receive both awards. “Best overall is the best award to get,” says Shea. How did they do it seven times in a row? By giving customers consistency—and it starts with top-notch employees who like to stick around. “By hiring good employees and keeping them; and by properly training them,” Shea says, “that’s what helps bring home these awards.” Some customers have their favorite servers—and they ask for them by name. These are just a few characteristics that give this local favorite a neighborhood feel. And when seasonal treats crop up in the fields, the chef gets more creative in the kitchen. Menu offerings change so customers can try new fare with added variety. But the signature items remain as permanent fixtures. Among top picks include the seafood chowder and chicken cordon bleu. Good ol’ fish and chips remains as the all time crowd pleaser and No. 1 seller. “We use Icelandic cod and we trim it to make sure it’s a high quality filet,” says Shea. Want to try something new? Wing Shack

Royal Wok

1133 Francis St., Longmont, (303) 834-8066 facebook.com/pages/Wing-Shack-Longmont

Owner Bob Blume knows how his customers take their wings. General Manager Mike Blume says, “We’re picky about the size of chicken wings.” That means they serve no skinny wings here. It takes about three bites to eat these wings. Customers like the idea that they’re eating all natural chicken with no antibiotics. Plus these wings are “always fresh, not frozen,” he adds. Frying the wings in soy bean oil gives them an especially crisp texture. Whether you enjoy bone in or out— Blume says customers love both kinds. Some top selling appetizers include the beer-battered varieties — from mushrooms and zucchini to pickles.

What makes Einstein Bros. different than other bagel shops? They might have a corporate upbringing, but General Manager Michelle Tafoya says they work hard to bring out that warm, friendly atmosphere. “We try to make customers feel like they are at home,” she says. “We know most of our customers by name.” Since most customers are headed to work—they have little time to spare. That’s why Tafoya says it’s important to run an efficient operation where customers can grab and go. Staff sometimes process orders quicker than customers place orders, she says. That’s because they know the regulars well. Plus, it helps being part mind reader.

With 150 dessert choices, it’s hard to say which ones taste the best—especially if your sweet tooth gets the better of you. BEST BAR and BEST HAPPY HOUR

Pumphouse Brewery

540 Main St., Longmont, (303) 702-0881, pumphousebrewery.com

Receiving accolades like Best Bar award might sound all too easy. After all it’s beer and lots of it—plus other crafty concoctions. Ross Hagen, one of five partners says there’s no magic going on here, just a lot of hard work. It requires putting a lot of love into the business, something he finds extremely rewarding. Hagen tries to see what the customer’s sees from their fork, to their plate to their cup , as if he were sitting at the booth or bar placing the order. “I like to go out, dine and enjoy the hospitality industry and I want to make sure I’m providing a service that fills a niche,” he says. Customers have no shortage of choices, and when that certain panic sets in after perusing through 8 to 12 varieties on tap, it’s nice to know you can play it safe and order the sampler—unless you prefer one of 50 bottled varieties. During regular happy hour—from 3 to 6 pm M-F, all beers are $1 off,

well drinks and house wines $3.50, margaritas and long islands $4. Missed another happy hour? Remember there’s more drink specials from 10 p.m. to Midnight—everyday.

BEST BARBECUE and BEST CARBON VALLEY RESTAURANT

Georgia boys BBQ Company

237 Collyer St., Longmont, (720) 999-4099, georgiaboysbbqcompany.com

When it comes to good BBQ—there’s no time to rush. Co-owners Matt Alexander and Nick Reckinger would tell you it’s all about slow cooking to perfection. “Sometimes it takes two nights to cook the soups, gumbos, and red beans and rice,” says Manager Matt Bond. Wondering why it tastes so good? It starts with authentic recipes, like sweet potato casserole from mom’s recipe box—Donna Alexander. It also helps when pit masters have some serious know-how about amping up the flavor. These guys are “rubbin’ and smokin’ from 6a to 6p”–

which means your meat is always in good hands. Choice cuts of brisket and premium spices like black canyon chili powder, and alderwood (which runs nearly $26 per pound) send your taste buds into a flavor fusion revolution. Hats off to the Carbon Valley location where southern hospitality and friendly conversation flows like icy beers on a hot day. There you’ll find daily specials, a full service bar and soup and salad assortments fit for any appetite. Not sure what to order? Bond says the super juicy “burnt ends,” brisket never lasts long—so order em’ early or opt for a tangy slab of finger-lickin’ ribs.

They use Coda coffee, named “Denver roaster of the year” last year, and other local products and suppliers, including Royal Crest Dairy, Breadworks from Boulder, and Longmont’s La Momo Maes for sweets. Knudsen maintains Ziggi’s drive-through speed is better than its competitors, and its downtown store is a second home for many customers. “They come to hang out and bump into people. Open for 13 years in Longmont, Santiago’s specializes in providing a casual, family restaurant environment. With breakfast, lunch and dinner options, customers can find a taste of Mexico that is “authentic, affordable and always fresh,” Craig Morales, co-owner with his wife Annette, says. “We believe we only have one chance to impress a customer,” Morales says. One consistent customer-pleaser is Santiago’s selection of burritos. Breakfast burritos come filled with a different meat each weekday, with a chef’s choice on Saturday. For later in the day, Morales says popular deluxe burritos, like the beef and bean, and steak are” good for afternoon and nighttime.” Although the burritos can be served plain with a choice of bean, cheese, and a variety of meats, Morales says customers often return for Santiago’s green chile. Available in hot, mild or half-and-half, the green chile can be served inside or smothered on top of all burritos. The deluxe choice takes the smothered option and adds lettuce, cheese and tomato on top.

At 3 Margaritas, the original margarita is always made from scratch, never from mixes, and includes fresh lime juice, Cointreau, and choice of tequila. According to manager Juan Rodriguez, in addition to its margaritas, the restaurant is also known for “consistent quality and presentable plates.” “I learned from a famous chef years ago that people eat with their eyes, and I believe that is true,” he said. Using quality ingredients in their salsas, meats and other items, 3 Margaritas serves food in a friendly atmosphere that Rodriguez says “makes it feel like home.” The restaurant itself is a large, open space, with customers often commenting on the “beautiful decorations.” The furniture is authentic Mexican, coming from the State of Jalisco. On Monday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., 3 Margaritas features a mariachi band. “Customers love it,” Rodriguez said. They come to celebrate special events on Mondays or just to enjoy the mariachi. “When you combine all these things… location is important, but it’s also important to be consistent with food and service and the way you treat customers. That’s all you need.”

BEST MARTINI and BEST OUTDOOR DINING

Martini’s Bistro

543 Terry St., Longmont, (303) 651-2772, martinisbistro.com

In 2004, Martinis’ Bistro owners Frank and Ann Kaven transformed their restaurant (formerly named ChriSar’s) from a family-oriented steak-andpasta restaurant; the changes included a new name and a redesigned, upscale patio area that includes hanging flower baskets, an herb garden, and a water fountain. Housed in a turn-of-the-century Victorian home, Martini’s Bistro is a casually upscale restaurant with an al fresco dining area that can seat nearly 100. “Our guests have the opportunity to relax, refresh and rejuvenate under the cabanas, drink martinis in the sun or indulge themselves in the delicious dishes that make our patio the award-winning dining experience it is,” said marketing and events manager Shelly Steele-Morehead. If it’s a martini a customer wants to enjoy, Martini’s Bistro offers more than 30 varieties of this popular mixed drink. While martinis are traditionally prepared by using gin and dry vermouth, pouring over ice and garnishing with an olive, Martini’s Bistro has “taken it to another level,” said SteeleMorehead, by mixing different spirits with liqueurs and juices. Whether you want it ‘shaken or stirred,’ Martini’s Bistro delivers the shaker – and the experience – right to your table,” Steele Morehead said.

Loaf & Ladle

CyclHOPS Bike CANtina

Loaf & Ladle has been family owned and operated in Longmont for more than 25 years. Lance and Jackie Thorne have kept their Cajun-French heritage ever-present with infusions of recipes from generations past. Originally from New Orleans, hurricane Katrina prompted the Thorne family to move out west. But, they didn’t leave the down-south influence behind. The Loaf & Ladle menu has an abundance of southern, Cajun and familial influences. “For Mardi Gras, we host a big Mardi Gras-inspired menu, and I make everything I know how. We offer alligator, shrimp creole, bread pudding, gumbo and po’ boy sandwiches, among many other menu items,” Lance Thorne, co-owner, says. Open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, customers can delight in a variety of lunch eats. From sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts, it’s not likely to leave you hungry. When the sandwich menu won’t suffice, a Loaf & Ladle soup and salad will. Offering three to four soup options each day from a list of 20 family soup recipes and a variety of salads from a sesame Thai salad, cashew chicken salad to the traditional Caesar salad, finding the perfect lunch combination is possible. “If you’re lucky, you’ll catch my Cajun soup day, when I’ll make something a bit more down-south delicious,” he says. And rounding out the perfect lunch meal isn’t complete without a slice of homemade pie. “Most of our pies are my aunt’s and grandma’s recipes. My wife and I have added cheesecakes and other treats to the menu throughout the years to make it new and fresh for customers, and we have recently started offering fresh strawberry pie, fresh peach pie and butterscotch pie, among others,” Thorne says. For the years of patronage and support, Loaf & Ladle can’t say “Thank you” enough. “I’m so thankful to Longmont. It has been an amazing ride here, and the people in Longmont are so nice and awesome. Without them, we’d be nothing,” he says.

CyclHOPS Bike CANtina is a contemporary taco, beer and tequila eatery and bike hangout for Longmont patrons and cyclists. CyclHOPS doesn’t only provide mouthwatering tacos — with tortillas sourced from Las Americas Tortilleria in Longmont — drinks and merriment for its customers, it’s also the official retail location and full-service bicycle shop for the Oskar Blues in-house bicycle brand, REEB Cycles. “Everyone that’s a part of CyclHOPS works really hard, and we’re really proud of what we have accomplished. It’s so awesome that the Longmont community has embraced us,” Jason Rogers, owner, says. An original Oskar Blues creation, CyclHOPS’ full-service cantina isn’t just for bicycle enthusiasts, everyone is welcome. Offering 20 on-tap craft beers and 43 premium tequilas in the Can-tina’s tasting room, CyclHOPS “brings a little south-ofthe-border soul to Colorado.”

Opened in Longmont in December 2006, and owned and operated by Justine and Seth Witherspoon, Sugarbeet is the hot-spot dining destination for both a romantic dinner and palate-gratifying wine list. Operating in an intimate space with limited seating and an inviting environment, Sugarbeet is the perfect foodie sit-down. With seasonal menu selections, every item is natural and made inhouse. “We wanted to offer a unique, fine-dining experience in Longmont,” Justine Witherspoon, co-owner, says. “We wanted to showcase culinary talent, use local farms and be able to provide Longmont with fresh meats and seafood.” One of the contributing factors that makes Sugarbeet restaurant an industry standout is that customers won’t find anything on the menu that isn’t fresh, including the meat. “We don’t serve anything frozen, except ice cream,” Witherspoon says. A great meal is only elevated by a perfect wine pairing. Fortunately, Sugarbeet offers a unique wine list to complement any meal and excite the taste buds. “We try to feature single vineyards and estate-ground wines,” Witherspoon says. “We have a unique wine list that offers boutique wineries, and you won’t find nationally distributed wines, as we focus on West Coast wineries.” Although the Sugarbeet wine list may not be extensive, it’s unique and interesting selections make enjoying a glass of wine a necessity.

When owners Tripp Lindley and Peter McLaughlin launched Tortugas nearly two decades ago, they were told they “wouldn’t make it in this town.” Yet they stuck with it, focusing on fresh seafood in a Caribbean/Cajun style. “We are happy to represent the independent food market, proud to be one and to operate alongside the others,” Lindley said. With such favorites as jambalaya on the menu since its inception, Tortugas also offers a changing variety of fresh fish on its chalkboard menu. With little staff turnover, customers often request wait staff by name, which enhances the experience, said Lindley. “This town’s been great to us, has embraced us, we really feel a part of it,” he said.

Having the best steak in town, said Texas Roadhouse managing partner Clint Hacker, comes down to the quality of the steak. “We hand cut our steak every day in 34-degree coolers,” he said. Everything at Texas Roadhouse is made from scratch, down to the croutons and salad dressing. “We’re not open for lunch because we’re here working for dinner,” Hacker said. “That’s part of our story.” The biggest seller is the six-ounce sirloin, which comes with two sides for $9.99, a “great value,” according to Hacker. BEST THEATER PERFORMANCE

Longmont Theatre Company

513 Main St., Longmont, (303) 772-5200, longmonttheatre.org

Longmont Theatre Company has a long history of dazzling audiences—57 years to be precise. Whether you’ve laughed, cried or just sat quietly during performances, chances are you appreciate the labors that come with productions. Marketing Director, Tracy Cravens, says, “We’ve been in the community so long, people recognize us. We’re part of the downtown nightlife and we are a communitydriven theatre.” What’s so refreshing? Their willingness to try new things—despite rising costs from scripts like Sweeny Todd, which Craven says “has pulled a brand new crowd in,” adding that it attracts “new people as actors and audience.” In 2015, watch for “Driving Miss Daisy” and a much anticipated musical still under wraps.

A&W All American Food

A&W All American Food is in its 44th year in Berthoud, making it a community staple for what owner Randy Hamann calls a “funny little town.” “We’re kind of part of the community, part of the fabric of Berthoud,” he says. “Berthoud is a funny little town. There’s not much here, but we’ve always been here.” Hamann’s mother opened the A&W in 1948 and it passed into the hands of Hamann and his wife in 1995. The family-owned restaurant sees a lot of business from local high school students as both employees and patrons and Hamann spends many of his advertising dollars on the local Parks and Recreation Department. “People really embrace us and we’re pretty involved in the community,” he says.

Barbed Wire Books

504 Main St., Longmont, (303) 827-3620, barbedwirebooks.net

Barbed Wire Books is constantly on the go. With a constant influx of local authors, artists, musicians, book clubs as well as new and used books, each visit promises to be unique. It’s not a place you walk into, get what you need and walk back out. It’s a pleasant place to browse, discuss and stay awhile, which explains why it has become a community favorite. Owner Kathe Heinecken says, “A bookstore can be a hub for many different facets of culture and society — current affairs, the arts, literature, entertainment — the list goes on. As each of these avenues open up, it’s only a matter of allowing the connections to happen.” Local bookstores like Barbed Wire fill a niche that chains just can’t. “By special ordering new, used, in print and out of print, books, movies, music, even prints and posters, we can do much more than sell best-sellers,” Heinecken points out. By stocking for and from their clientele they have the ability to offer a much more “eclectic” selection and all of the extras are simply responding to the needs of their customers.

11809 N. 75th St., Hygiene, (303) 774-8330, marys-market.com

The people make the place at Ace Hardware, according to co-owner Kirsten Pellicer, who has been working at the store with her parents since she was a teenager. “Locally and nationally, we’re known as the helpful place,” says Pellicer. “You can’t be helpful without the people who are out there everyday interacting with the customers and telling them how to do their projects. That’s really what we’ve built our business on.” Pellicer’s parents bought the local hardware store 24 years ago and opened Ace, confident of their commitment to the Longmont area. “My parents loved it here so much, they invested in the community and bought a business,” says Pellicer. “Longmont is just a wonderful community and it has been so good to us.”

If you are looking for the heartbeat of Hygiene, it’s right here at Mary’s Market & Deli! Locals drop by to catch up on the news and pick up a sandwich or gluten-free berry pie. Tourists enjoy browsing the antiques, handcrafts and artworks by local artists. It’s also a popular rest stop on weekends for bike riders who need a little carb assist or an espresso for the road. There’s been a grocery in this location since 1944, and owner Mary Magdalena has retained that local vibe while creating a place that “anybody from anywhere” can appreciate. “People are responding to real, healthy, local and homemade food,” Magdalena says. “Thanks for acknowledging our gift to our community.”

When customers come in to Snyder Jewelers, owner, Linda Snyder wants to see them leave with something that will bring them joy. “We’ve always looked at what we do as building relationships rather than just selling something,” she says. She believes that a tradition of commitment to community and excellence of service, begun when her family opened the store in 1948, is what sets them apart and above in a line of impersonal chains and outlets. Though they offer customers everything from designer pieces, to refreshing a piece they already own or designing something completely new, they offer one more all important piece, a relationship. That relationship is what keeps Longmont coming back.

BEST NIWOT BUSINESS

Sugar Beet Station

7960 Niwot Rd., Niwot, (720) 491-0676, facebook.com/SugarBeetStation

Most of us use paper to jot down a note now and then. But Erin Brooke, owner of Sugar Beet Station, turns paper into art. Brooke fashions flat sheets of the stuff into colorful bouquets of flowers, flocks of sheep, gift bags, garlands of butterflies and other amazing items to display or use. This is the place to find a great gift for even the most discriminating friend. “We always have a wide variety of gift items to please just about everyone,” Brooke says. There’s always something new to discover among the soaps and lotions, funny magnets, children’s toys, artsy jewelry, messenger bags, candles and cards. “We love our customers and are happy to be of service to the Niwot community,” Brooke says.

BEST PET SUPPLY STORE

PetSmart

1125 S. Hover Rd., Longmont, (303) 702-9526, petsmart.com

If you have a pet, from fishy to fido, you’ve probably been to PetSmart. It’s a go-to location for any pet related need. Food? They have that. Toys? That too. What about habitats, dietary supplements, veterinary care, medications grooming and training? No problem. The one thing you won’t find at PetSmart are cats and dogs for sale. Rather than contribute to overpopulation problems, PetSmart holds adoption events in conjunction with local Adoption Partners. The pet adoption goes through the local agency and PetSmart doesn’t see the funds. They do provide adoption kits for new pet owners, with in-store discounts on products and training. Whether they’re a new family member or a lifetime companion, PetSmart loves your pet like you do.

Brown’s Shoe Fit has a legacy that goes back to 1911, when Win Brown opened the first store in a nine-foot-wide space in Shenandoah, Iowa. With a bit of pluck and a lot of hard work, the company grew and the word got out. Now with over 80 stores in 12 mid-western states, Brown’s sole goal is to get you into the perfect pair of shoes, whether you are walking, running or just loafing in your loafers. Manager Jason Wetzel says, “We want people to find what they are looking for, have an enjoyable experience while shopping, and have a knowledgeable and friendly staff available to help them.” You’ll find good quality, name-brand footwear and accessories, and enjoy personalized, professional service on every visit. Most of us don’t think about our tires until we get a flat or it’s time to get the snow tires mounted. But the team at Discount Tire thinks about tires every day, and how to serve your tire needs the best they can. “We work hard to earn the right to call you our customer,” says manager Rick Thompson. You can count on their knowledge to get you set up with the right tires to match your automobile and driving needs. And integrity is a big thing here, too. “We keep people safe, we treat them fairly, and we do what’s right for our customers.” At Discount Tire, that’s just the way they roll.

Yes, they help customers plan trips abroad and upscale cruises, but they also offer more budget friendly options. They even work with the local senior center to plan escorted group tours. If anything goes awry, the escort is there to handle all of the details and that’s added peace of mind for some travelers. Karen said simply,“People trust us.” And that’s really what it comes down to.
