There are 172 days until Thanksgiving, so you’d better hurry if you plan on decorating this year. For a cornucopia of color, get your seeds in the ground before June 15, popping in everything you need to stuff that horn in November. Start by planting two staples of fall decor – miniature gourds and tiny pumpkins. These must-have accents nestle into centerpieces and are easy to grow in our hot, dry summer. Each vine produces enough fruit to make any decorator happy, but because they like to ramble, give them room or train them up a trellis. Customize your plants to fit your decorator’s style, by planting a mix of orange and white mini pumpkins. If you favor a flat pumpkin, orange Jack be Little or white Baby Boo is what you need. Small to medium sized sunflowers are cheerful in dried arrangements, and keep long into the fall. Harvest when flowers are partially open, cutting the stem off at the length you want for arranging. Then bundle the sunflowers into groups of three, making sure the heads aren’t touching, tie with twine and hang them upside down in a cool, dark place to dry. The flowers will unfurl as they dry. Try the pollen-less Pro Cut sunflower series; the orange, yellow peach and bi-color blooms were developed for cut flower use. Johnny’s Selected Seeds has them. Make your own fall wreath or swag with broomcorn (Sorghum

bicolor). The name is misleading – this isn’t corn – but the seed sprays of this sorghum come in bronze, burgundy, black and cream. Harvest after the seed heads have colored up, but before the stalk becomes hard and woody. Cut the stem, then hang the sprays upside down to dry. Women know that the perfect twist of silk scarf can catapult an ordinary outfit into a fashion achievement. There’s a joyous insouciance that prevails in such moments. Short in stature, begonias have large dense flowers with ruffled petals in rich shades of red, yellow, white, champagne, pink or orange. • Caladium – Another shade lover, caladiums are known for colorful “painted” heart-shaped leaves in mixes of greens, whites, pinks or reds. Grow in full sun to partial shade. • Canna – Cannas are garden peacocks, strutting their magnificent foliage. They come in dwarf (18 to 36 inches) and tall (3 to 12 feet) versions. Their broad leaves in shades of green, brown, burgundy, black and multicolored stripes are so dramatic that their fluttery flowers seem irrelevant. Still the flowers are an added treat, worn aloft like little cocktail hats. Grow in full sun, also suited to water gardens, if desired. • Dahlia – Razzle-dazzle dahlias are the surprise of the decade. Once pooh-poohed by the genteel set for their raucous colors and exuberant shape shifting, dahlias today are prized for these same traits. them down. Plant dahlias in full sun. Cut flowers for the vase any time you like, but definitely snip off faded flowers. You’ll be happy you did, because the more you cut dahlias, the more flowers they produce. • Elephant Ears – Under this moniker three elephantine-types are pooled – Colocasia esculenta, Alocasia, Xanthosoma – all earmarked by elongated, outsized, heartshaped leaves. These tender toughies tend to transform ho-hum settings into tropical holiday havens. Different varieties have different looks, with green, chartreuse, black or striped foliage. Their heights vary widely, ranging from 12 inches to 6 feet. Elephant ears like sun, partial shade, even deep shade. Suited to water gardens, if desired. • Gloriosa – How truly odd: a summer bulb vine that pulls itself aloft by throwing tiny green tendrils from its leaf tips, its exotic flowers draped here and there like so many huge energetic spiders. lovers that relish any bit of support, scrambling up a trellis or obelisk, happy to hitch a ride to another woody vine or shrub. When the flower show is over, gloriosa keep going. Their fat undulated seedpods provide garden interest well into fall. Look for varieties with red-and-yellow, orange or yellow flowers. • Lily – While most summer bulbs are frost sensitive tender bulbs, lilies are hardy perennial bulbs and can be planted in either spring or fall. They are often considered the queens of the summer garden in a nod to their regal bearing and sophisticated flowers. Many are wonderfully fragrant, to boot. Lily styles, colors and looks abound – especially now. • Pineapple Lilies (Eucomis) – Certainly this bulb flower is reminiscent of the tufted tropical fruit. With its 15-inch spire of tiny greenish–white (or wine-colored) flowers atop a base of broad, strappy green leaves, eucomis are decidedly dramatic. As potted plants, they’re spectacular.

David Austin named this rose for Princess Alexandra, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II who is a keen gardener and great lover of roses. The rose that bears her name has unusually large flowers of a warm, glowing pink. They are full petalled and deeply cupped, the ring of soft pink outer petals enclosing the warm pink inner petals to create a most pleasing effect. In spite of their size, they are never clumsy, being held nicely poised on a well-rounded shrub. Because of their size, there is a lot to be said for planting in groups of three, keeping both flowers and growth nicely balanced. They have a delicious fresh tea fragrance which, interestingly, changes completely to lemon as the flower ages – eventually taking on additional hints of blackcurrants. It is very healthy. The summer months are right around the corner, and water conservation will undoubtedly be brought to the forefront for those who are impacted by seasonal droughts and water usage restrictions in their towns. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, at least 36 states anticipate local, regional or statewide water shortages by 2013, even under non-drought conditions. “The reality is that water conservation is a responsibility that we all share, regardless of location,” says Carol Anne Kemper, product manager, Delta Faucet Company. “By making small changes around the house and to our daily routines, we can make a significant impact on our water supplies without feeling as though we’re sacrificing our comforts or experience.” She suggests starting with the home bathroom, where the water-saving potential is great. “The EPA estimates that Americans use roughly 3.3 billion gallons of water each day just for showering,” Kemper says. “We can bring that number down by taking a slightly shorter shower or using a water-saving showerhead.” It seems to be abundant, but water is a relatively scarce resource. Less than 1 percent of the world’s fresh water is readily accessible for direct human use. Here are a few tips that you can follow to reduce your water consumption in the bath. • Install a water-efficient showerhead. By installing a water-efficient showerhead, the average four-person household can potentially save an estimated 11,000 gallons of water per year. • Fix a leaky faucet. According to the EPA, a leaky faucet dripping at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. • Learn to reuse and recycle. Don’t pour water down the drain when there may be another use for it, such as water-

ing plants or cleaning. • Turn off the water. According to the EPA, a bathroom faucet usually runs at 2 gallons of water per minute. By turning off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving, you can save more than 200 gallons of water per month. • Switch to a high-efficiency toilet. A high-efficiency toilet uses less than 1.3 gallons per flush, leading to an average of 20 percent less water per flush when compared to the industry standard of 1.6 gallons. Market prime for homebuyers

If you missed the April 30 homebuyer tax-credit deadline without snagging a house, pat yourself on the back: You just may turn out to be one of the lucky ones. While the credit is now history, buyers may be able to make up that money – and then some – through some shrewd househunting throughout the next two months, industry experts say. “Savvy buyers can put their feet back into the market,” says Rona Fischman, principal broker at 4 Buyers Real Estate in Cambridge, Mass. “It will be more sane and less of a seller’s market.” Thanks to the tax credit, buyers came into the market in the past year who otherwise might have waited on the sidelines, says Olivier Garret, chief executive officer of Casey Research in Stowe, Vt. Because the credit pulled demand forward, competition among buyers is set to plummet just as the spring market traditionally peaks in May and June. That could create bargains for buyers. Several factors may put downward pressure on home prices and increase seller desperation throughout the next few months, according to some economists and market observers. Home-mortgage rates may climb now that the Federal Reserve has ended its campaign of buying up $1.25 trillion in mortgage-backed securities. In addition, inventory levels may swell as more foreclosures and short sales come onto the market. All of these factors could cause demand for homes to soften. Garret is predicting another step down in home prices across the United States by year’s end. “Nationwide, prices are going to go back down,” Garret says. “We anticipate a decline in pricing in 2010 of 10 percent.” For buyers who are employed and not burdened by debt issues, the weeks ahead

may turn out to be a great period for bargain-hunting. Real-estate agents and housing-market experts offer the following tips for buyers who want to take advantage of the new sweet spot in the market: • Maximize seller desperation. Sellers may be ready to make a deal, especially if they thought they had an agreement lined up before the tax-credit deadline, only to see it fall through. Careful reading of MLS records may offer insights into whether a seller is suffering from such post-tax credit blues. For example, the property’s listing history might show it was placed under agreement in the weeks leading up to the expiration of the tax credit, only to be put up for sale again later. A broker can be especially helpful in uncovering such clues. “The seller is probably going to be more motivated after suffering a disappointment,” says Barry Nystedt, a board member and former president of the Avondale, Ariz.based National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents. • Practice psychological warfare. Sellers determined to hold out for a higher price may require some subtle reminders about the true state of the market, says Mitch Ribak, broker-owner of eHomes Realty Network and Tropical Realty in Suntree, Fla. In a bid to get some sellers to move, Ribak has reminded them the tax credit won’t be coming back and the competition will only mount as foreclosures roll onto the market. • Be choosy but open-minded. Homebuyers may not find the range of selection they expect in today’s market. For starters, the surge of buying that took place before the tax-credit deadline may have put a temporary dent in your local market’s inventory. Also, new homes coming onto the market are more likely to be foreclosures and short sales. There are good homes out there, though some may be diamonds in the rough.

Dear Helaine and Joe: Attached are photographs of a knickknack that was handed down by my mother years ago. It seems like it was in our kitchen for ages. Stamped on the bottom is “c” in a circle followed by “1961,” “Inarco,” “E-19” and “o/c.” I would like to know what the value might be. Thank you, L.R.G. Dear L.R.G.: Head vases were made in a staggering variety of styles by an amazing number of companies. Many were imported from Japan after the end of World War II, but others were made in this country by such firms as Shawnee Pottery of Zanesville, Ohio; the Ceramics Art Studio of Madison, Wis.; DeLee Art and Ruth Sloan, both of Los Angeles; Florence Ceramics of Pasadena, Calif.; and Betty Lou Nichols Ceramics of La Habra, Calif. However, most head vases found on today’s collectibles market were imported from Japan by such companies as NAPCO, Enesco, Fitz and Floyd, INARCO and Lefton. NAPCO is the acronym of the National Potteries Corporation, which was founded in 1938 in Bedford, Ohio, but

in the 1970s it was listed as being located in Cleveland. NAPCO imported from Japan a variety of novelty and giftware items. In the 1940s, Irwin Garber joined the company and is said to have been instrumental in the development of the head vase planters. It is said that Garber designed many of the head vases that were subsequently made in Japan, and that his wife sometimes served as the model and inspiration. Interestingly, this model, with its beribboned black hat and hand held gracefully near the face, is often identified with Hollywood star Lana Turner (1921-1995). The example in today’s question appears to be in good condition, with both the pearl earrings intact and its original pearl necklace. The blush on the cheeks appears to be unmarred, as does the black on the eyelashes, hat and off-theshoulder dress. It has an insurance-replacement value of between $150 and $175.
