furniture that’s made of particle board, solid wood can be stripped, stained, coated with wood veneers and repaired to unveil its true beauty.

Channel Your Inner Craftsman Working with woods can take years of experience, but you can save money by doing some refinishing yourself. Be sure to use quality products, research the processes and seek advice from experts if you’re unsure. Chuck Greenman, owner of Knute’s Restoration in Longmont, is an advocate of using all waterbased products to refinish furniture. They’re easy on the environment, work faster and the vapors are not harmful. Time is also a factor to consider. Refinishing can take several hours or even a few days.

Bored with your antique oak bureau? Well, you’re in luck: wood furniture often looks better with a makeover. The results of refinishing and restoring wooden furnishings can last for centuries, and there is a wide range of options to add richness to the pieces in your house. Versatility is one of the best assets of solid wood furniture. Unlike modern

Strip ‘Em One of the most common ways to alter wood furniture’s appearance is by changing the color, or stain, of the piece, which can be achieved through a process called stripping. To strip wood furniture, a chemical product is applied to the wood that lifts the previous stain or

finish from the wood grain. Jerry Keller, owner of Dip N Strip in Longmont, says anyone can strip their wood pieces. If you have no experience with wood furniture, though, he recommends working with pieces that are fairly flat and don’t have intricate detail. When done correctly, stripping will bring the piece of furniture back to its natural wood color. From there you can

stain it whatever color you like, unless the previous stain on the piece was red. Red stains contain strong dye and will never truly come out, Keller says. Greenman also cautions wood furniture owners not to damage the wood by leaving the stripper on the furniture too long. He says you’ll know it’s damaged when you “see the grain raising, see open grains and some fuzziness.”

Stain with Color Once the wood is bare, you can stain it a shade of your liking. If the wood is light in color, the staining options are limitless. But if you’re trying to keep up with the times, Greenman says most of his customers are asking for dark stains. Here are some tips from Greenman and Keller on staining furniture: • Read the Material Safety Data Sheets before starting. • Test the stain on a small area of the wood to see how it reacts. General Care Tips • Car wax applicators can be • Stay away from water – used to apply stain. Absorb exAccording to Jerry Keller, cess stain from the wood with owner of Dip N Strip in paper towels. Keller recommends installing low emissivity glass in windows, which filters the sun’s rays. You can also apply furniture creams with SPF to protect wood. Just make sure that they contain no waxes or silicones.

Wooden Wallpaper If you desire a different type of wood but can’t afford new furniture, wood veneers may be your match. Veneers are like wallpaper for wood. Slender strips of wood 30 thousandths of an inch thick, they’re flexible and can curve around and conform to the surface of furniture.

Get a Handle On It A simple way to reinvent your tired furniture may lie in changing the hardware. Replace the handles and knobs with more modern designs, or be creative with what you have. Watch the Paint Dry Finally – and this is the absolute last resort – you can paint over your wood furniture. Both wood workers suggest applying a quality sanding sealer to the bare wood and letting it dry before painting. Be careful in refinishing or altering your wood furniture’s appearance. Fine wood is an inexpensive investment that can last for years, but requires attention and care. At the same time, don’t be afraid to take a risk and try something new with your furniture.

Get your home ready for the market If you’re encouraged by the “pendingâ€? signs around your neighborhood, and want to put your home on the market, you first need to get it sale-ready. That requires a strategy, because depending on the upgrades your home needs, it might be a time-consuming task. Begin by assessing the updates and set an action plan that’s six to eight weeks before listing your home. And consult with your Realtor and seek his or her advice on considering a home stager. Here are some tips: • Updating wood floors – If re-sanding will do the trick, allow time to schedule professionals’ visits and estimates. For partial or complete replacements, visit home-improvement stores or flooring specialists to see samples. Allow time for measuring, choosing

flooring and getting written quotes. • Re-carpeting – Hardwood flooring appeals to buyers, but replacing existing carpeting is less costly than laying hardwood. • Painting – If you’re hiring a professional, allow time for estimates. Color selection takes time, especially when trying to find a happy medium between neutralizing your home’s colors, keeping them modern and complementing existing furniture. • De-clutter – You will need a day or two to de-clutter closets, the garage and so forth. You may want to rent a portable storage unit to temporarily remove items from view. Tina Fountain, St. Petersburg Times

“Working with Tommy was great and he saved us over $5,000 on the price of our house in commission fees alone!” ~ Cathy H. of Westminster

• YOU FIND THE HOME. • I CLOSE THE DEAL. • WE SPLIT THE COMMISSION.

*

LEARN MORE ABOUT COMMISSION REBATES AT

* Clients receive at least half of the buy-side commission that I receive... which is typically 2.8% of the purchase price of the home. While individual results will vary, this generally means that clients will get back at least 1.4% of purchase price. The commission rebate is provided as a credit at closing, requiring buyers to bring less cash to the closing table.
