Keeping the taps from getting tapped out By ALyssia Payan
Longmont Times-Call
Children running through the sprinklers, splashing down a Slip ‘n Slide or chasing each other with Super Soakers is what summer is all about. But with all of this fun comes the use of a lot of water. How should parents balance the fun in the sun, watering the lawn and being water conscious? Kate Gardner, water programs manager at the Center for Resource Conservation in Boulder, says we need to conserve outdoors because that’s where most of our water is being used. “Colorado has a semi-aired climate and we aren’t getting enough rain to support our urban landscapes, so this is putting a lot of strain on our water resource,” she says. Most homeowners use sprinkler systems to keep their lawn looking golf course-green because they don’t have time to be out there with the hose. So, what can you do to keep the taps from running dry? No, you don’t have to rip up all of that blue grass and put in

some rocks. “The first step when people want to save water, is not to make big changes, but to get as effective as possible,” says Alison Peck, owner of Matrix Gardens in Boulder. “Make sure your sprinkler system is watering evenly.” This is important to prevent dead spots in areas and over-watered spots in
LBA
others. An evenly watered landscape will be able to hold in moisture and will keep your landscape looking beautiful all season. “When you start your sprinkler system for the season do a walk through to check that everything is working properly and fix problems promptly,” Gardner says.
Instead of getting all wet and messing with your sprinkler heads, the Center for Resource Conservation offers free sprinkler or irrigation audits through their Slow the Flow Colorado Inspection Program. This program helps residents in Longmont and surrounding areas become more aware of their landscape water usage. These water assessments determine problems with irrigation systems, soil and root composition, and how much water is being used. At the end homeowners receive a customized water plan recommendation for their landscape, says Gardner. “With (the sprinkler system as) a time-saving invention, comes great responsibility and water consciousness.” Often, the only need is a slight adjustment to the sprinkler system settings to make water usage more efficient. “A smart controller can lead to a 40 percent of water savings. These devices change in accordance with the weather and seasons, which will get you more for your water,” Gardner says.

Peck says it’s important to conserve water because water is the next oil, meaning clean water is limited. “(Remember) the water we are using is from some stream or river, so it has less water than it had historically for wildlife usage. The Colorado River is already over allocated, meaning that it has more commitments than there is water.” Saving water this summer may seem like it doesn’t do much besides decreasing water bills. However, in the bigger scheme of things it has a huge impact. “Our population is growing, which is putting more stress on our resources. At the individual level we need to be responsible to make sure we all have enough (water),” Peck says. For more information about the Slow the Flow Inspection Program, visit www.conservationcenter.org or call 303-999-3820 ext. 217.
Conserve with these tips Lawn • Cycle and Soak Method – When watering your lawn and landscaping, water three cycles/day. Generally, for pop type sprinklers, each cycle should be four to six minutes in length with an hour between cycles. For rotating sprinkler heads, the water cycle should be 10 to 12 minutes long with an hour between watering cycles. • Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered. • Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. • If water runs off your lawn easily, split your watering time into shorter periods to allow for better absorption. • Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting. A taller lawn shades roots and holds soil moisture better. • Check the root zone of your lawn or garden for moisture before watering using a spade or trowel. If it’s still moist 2 inches under the soil surface, you still have enough water. • Choose shrubs and ground covers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas, such as steep slopes and isolated strips. • Spreading a layer of organic mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water, time and money. Outdoors • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway. • Don’t forget to check outdoor faucets, sprinklers and hoses for leaks. • When the kids want to cool off, use the sprinkler in an area where your lawn needs it the most.

July brought brisk start to housing recovery This is being written in the face of pessimism in the stock, currency and bond markets. Yet still, there remains a glimmer to the beginning of a housing recovery that will lead the United States out of recession, much like it has six out of the last eight recessions. The true beginning signs came this July. Longmont area sales increased 82 percent over unit sales for July 2010, jumping from 61 single-family homes sold, to 111 for July 2011. Lest one thinks it was a mistake, the numbers gathered from the Longmont Association of Realtors based on information provided by IRES LLC through July, 30, 2011, showed Firestone, Frederick and Dacono sales up 62.1 percent in July, and Boulder County unit sales up 10 percent. Just weeks ago, the local story showed a 23 percent year-to-date loss in real estate transactions in the Longmont market, yet I was forecasting that we would end the year down 3 percent from 2010,
which was a “stimulated” year in the inhome.” However, achieving the dream of dustry. It now may look like we could homeownership will become increasingend the year ahead of 2010 stimulated ly difficult for buyers if they are required numbers. In conclusion, all signs are pointing to a housing recovery, which this writer does not believe will be nationally recognized until about September. The industry only needs for Congress to be careful what they tweak. As the recent suggestion of the 20 percent down and the recent reduction of FHA loan limits now taking place, tend to send the same message to housing, as Joan Rivers sent when she said, “I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw that my bath toys were a toaster and a radio.” Odds are that the National Association of Realtors will be successful, and the housing recovery has in fact started and will be confirmed in the coming months. Dealing with scorched trees
“What’s wrong with the tree?” is a question frequently asked in our office at this time of the season. And for the most part, the answer is: tree scorch and symptoms of lack of winter water. Winter is a tough time for folks to think of watering trees, what with all of that chilly weather and bare branches. But roots dehydrate in dry soils and this past winter was bone dry. Here’s the surprise for most people: the result of no winter water is seen in midsummer, when trees struggle with scorched leaves. Yes, it seems counter-intuitive, but if you don’t have the roots to support a lush canopy, the leaves lose water faster than the stunted root system can replace. This means leaves brown for seemingly no reason and drop from the tree. If your tree is starting to look peaked in the summer heat, check the leaves. Look for evenly discolored spots, typically from the tips inward (although not always). The discolored area have no rings, halos of colors or spores – if you see any of those things, you should suspect fungus or bacteria.
Carol O’Meara
On pines, the needles will brown with no rings or banding, becoming brittle and dry. Deciduous trees may loose a bit of canopy at this time as well, in response to high heat and low water. This is normal, but if the tree loses a lot of the canopy it’s probably under too much stress.
Other culprits besides lack of winter water are low relative humidity, wind, soil with high salt concentrations, compacted soil, new construction near the tree and plastic weed barriers. In short, anything that interferes with the tree getting water. Near where I live a shocking sight caused me to swerve to the curb, hop out of the car and take photos. Several Lindens and honeylocust trees were in full fall color, brilliantly yellow against the blue sky. In early October this might be a cause for joy, but when it happens at the end of July, it spells trouble. Colorado State University Extension
Disease, insects and herbicide are all possible suspects being considered by Ken Wicklund, city forester in Longmont, who had also been out to examine the trees. Though he doesn’t yet know the cause, he took a moment to urge caution on using weed killers around trees. “The problem is the amount people use; they give the weeds a little extra spray to be sure to kill them,” he says. “And some are really harmful to trees.” Care should be taken when using any product in your landscape; read and follow the label instructions. Don’t forget the effect of heat reflected from bright surfaces, especially on conifers. Light-colored siding gets hot, particularly on south or west sides. Symptoms become obvious following hot, dry weather in late summer. Evergreens may have tip dieback of needles, progressing from the tree’s top, moving downward and from outer branches inward. You can’t cure the tree, but you can help it be healthier next year. Try deep watering to a depth of 12 to 18 inches once a month in summer and winter. Organic mulch under trees helps reduce moisture loss, but avoid polyethylene plastic under mulches – use porous weed fabrics instead. Carol O’Meara is a horticulture entomologist with the Colorado State University Extension office at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. Contact her by calling 303-678-6238 or emailing comeara@co.boulder.co.us. For more gardening tips, check out her blog at gardeningafterfive.wordpress.com.
